It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the BMW NZ Polo Open — the highlight of the New Zealand polo calendar. We hope you enjoy your day
T
he Auckland Polo Club is delighted to present the BMW NZ Polo Open, 2021. The tournament kicks off the global polo calendar, and promises to be a brilliant social occasion. Despite the tumultuous events of the past year, we’re in a unique position to celebrate our homegrown polo talent, as the teams had the rare opportunity to pick from the country’s top players, all of whom are on New Zealand soil. The 44th NZ Polo Open is one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most competitive events, as players aim to win one of New Zealand’s oldest and most sought-after Polo trophies. This year, six teams will compete in the 12-goal tournament throughout the week, with the final held on our picturesque Auckland Polo Club grounds at Clevedon. There are many people involved in the BMW NZ Polo Open who I’d like to thank, particularly our naming sponsor, who I’m looking forward to watching in the BMW versus Polo Pony race. I’d also like to thank our other sponsors, competitors, patrons, grounds staff, umpires, supporters, club volunteers, event team and spectators, for making the NZ Polo Open the unmissable event it is. A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY BECKONS
Why buying gold now could be the best financial decision you make ALLOCATING A PORTION of your savings into precious metals is not the speculative move you might think it is. The value of gold and silver has proved to be a reliable investment, with double-digit increases in value being the norm in the last 20 years. This puts gold investors in an advantageous position, as the central banks’ monetary policy manoeuvrings are to the detriment of savers, says Tony Coleman, the managing director of NZ Gold Merchants Ltd. This is because the banks have traditionally looked to smooth out the booms and busts of the business cycle by using interest rates to increase or decrease the cost of doing business. On top of this, low interest rates have fuelled investment in housing, pushing up house prices and increasing the housing market risk. “We have generations of people who cannot fathom a housing market collapse, and many have gone ‘all in’ to secure a property,” says Coleman. Any significant economic downturn that threatens employment will rock this market, putting our banks at risk, too. This could lead to significant hardship for many, not to mention harm to our economic recovery. Add to this the global instability caused by the pandemic, and it becomes reasonable to question how we’d fare if another economic crisis hit. The government’s recent guarantee to the banks on new mortgage lending, and its deal with the big banks allowing them to offer a mortgage holiday
to those most affected by Covid-19 financial stress has eased some of the burden. But can this cushioning effect continue? “I do not believe this game of musical chairs can continue for much longer,” says Coleman. “When the music stops, many of us will be left standing without a chair to sit on.” With the likelihood of risk increasing as the pandemic continues to affect the world, and global indebtedness mounts, now is an optimal time to move money into safe haven assets, such as gold, Coleman advises. “I’m not against housing investment. It is the debt associated with it that is the concern. Banks control the liquidity – therefore individuals’ ability to buy and sell property in a timely manner.” As well as being a hedge against inflation, gold is an asset class that has benefited from quantitative easing, ie as governments take on more debt, and central banks ease monetary conditions (as ours has done recently), asset prices will increase in value. Liquidity is the key to managing and

profiting in the future, says Coleman. Without liquidity, your financial position becomes precarious. “If gold does nothing but cover your cost of inflation, you should hold some,” he says. “Gold is an exceptional store of value, it has no counter party risk, it is extremely liquid, and it is a contrarian investment (i.e. it typically goes up when other investments go down.)”

Aleisha It’s one of my favourite summer events. Such a wonderful reason to get dressed up and enjoy an afternoon of festivities and socialising. There’s the thrill of watching a field of ponies charging and chasing and the highest calibre ‘people-watching’ on offer.

SAFETY For your safety, spectators must not be in the safety zone during play. Polo ponies and polo balls travel at speed and if either hits you, it hurts. The safety zone is the area within 10m of the boards (the sideboards outlining the field) and 30m from the back goal-line. Kitted out to win Top New Zealand polo player Kit Brooks says the sport is all about horsepower
I
n a normal year, top New Zealand polo player Kit Brooks would have made up to 12 trips overseas, mostly to Australia, although last year he had trips booked to both Hawaii and Barbados to play polo. Of course, last year was no ordinary year. Instead, the five-time NZ Open-winning champion spent a nonetheless “flat-out” winter at home, breaking in and training racehorses, and in some cases, retraining racehorses to switch codes to polo. “The travel really breaks up my winter normally,” he says from KB Bloodstock, the thoroughbred training facility and home in Cambridge he shares with his poloplaying partner Bianca Drake. The property is surrounded by beautiful hill country and backs onto the famous Browne’s Hill, a worldrenowned training facility. “We’ve also collected a few new young polo ponies and got them

started for their new career. I really enjoy retraining racehorses for polo. So a long winter here has helped me start a few new, hopefully future champions.” A champion himself, Kit has also spent a busy few months gearing up for the biggest event on the polo calendar: the BMW NZ Polo Open, the first major tournament in the world for 2021. This year marks the fifth year in a row Kit has played with fellow star player JP Clarkin. With the NZ Open firmly in their sights, they aim to do as many lead-up tournaments as possible to get their team match-fit. Meanwhile, horse preparation starts in October, ensuring they’re all riding the best possible ponies. “And as players we try to be as fit and strong as possible,” says Kit, “with probably not enough hours spent in the gym as we should!” Despite being around horses for most of his life due to his parents being involved with racing and hunting, and Kit and his siblings cutting their riding teeth as competitive showjumpers, he was a late start to polo, picking it up in 2000 when the family moved to Cambridge. His first go was at
Mystery Creek Polo Club, playing with his father, brother and a family friend. Immediately hooked, he got a job in polo and kept making contacts and friends in the sport, leading to many years playing professionally in the UK. “I found the game to be super addictive,” he says. “I loved the horsemanship, the speed of the game.” He also loved the competitive nature of the sport, and the fact that it combined so many facets of agility, from handeye co-ordination to team dynamics, vision, strategy and fitness. “You have to be fully committed – we live and breathe it. Whether that’s training horses and practising or watching the top players from around the world and learning from them.” But the number one attribute, he says, is horsemanship. To be a top player is to be a good horseman. “It’s fast, and on a half-tonne animal with a mind of its own, it can be dangerous… But we love the horses and without them we have

nothing. So to me it’s all about horsepower.” Over the years, he’s endured a couple of broken fingers and foot, and a handful of stitches on his face – a “lucky” avoidance of injury that he puts down to the strict game rules that ensure safety for horse and rider. It’s also down to his commitment to continual improvement. “I’m forever working on my game. You can never stop! It’s a neverending challenge.”

Fast & furious “Like playing golf in an earthquake,” is how Sylvester Stallone describes engaging in a game of polo. Here’s what all that thundering action means
I
t’s the oldest, fastest team sport in the world, a game once played by Persian royalty as early as 600BC. Since then, it has inspired a legion of codes, including cricket, golf, hockey and hurling. And it’s still just as thrilling to watch today. A game of polo involves two teams of four riders, racing horses up and down a field, trying to score as many goals as possible. The team with the most goals at the end wins. Of course, it’s not quite as simple or easy as that. The players Imagine controlling the horse with your left hand and calmly swinging your polo mallet in the other, trying to connect with that small white ball as you gallop along the field faster than Jesse James. It goes without saying that polo is a game for experienced riders. The teams Four players make up each team. Number 1 and 2 are forwards. Number 3 is where you’ll find the best player. Number 4 is the

goal defender. These positions are nonetheless fluid, with players attacking and defending where necessary. (See overleaf for more). The rankings Much like golf, polo players have a handicap. Novices start at -2 and 10 is the maximum rating typically held by global superstars, of which there are less than 24 in the world. The individual handicaps are added up to produce a team handicap. All BMW NZ Polo Open teams have a handicap of 12. The horses Ahem, they’re known as ponies. This is despite them technically being horses that stand at more than 14.2 hands high. Because these agile animals run at such a pace, reaching speeds of up to 55km per hour, they tire quickly and must be rested. Most players will use at least six ponies per game, with some using two mounts for each period of play. The field A typical polo match is played on a field measuring 274m long by 200m wide. That’s 4ha or more than nine football fields combined. At half-time, you’ll be invited to ‘stomp the divots’, an age-old tradition in which you’ll thank yourself for wearing wedges. The game At the polo, you’ll get used to hearing the word ‘chukka’. Don’t be alarmed – it has nothing to do with spending too long at the bar. Chukkas are seven-minute periods of play. There are four or six of them in each game. Play continues until the ball goes out,
or the whistle is blown. The umpires There are two mounted umpires. One will throw the ball into play in the middle of the field. They’ll repeat this after each goal and at the start of each chukka. The goal posts These are 7.3m wide and collapsible for safety’s sake. Each time a goal is scored, teams switch goal ends. The rules Without strict rules in place, you’d have a maelstrom of speeding ponies tripping over one another as riders aim for a ball travelling at speeds of up to 160km per hour. Adhering to the ‘right of way’ rule is vital to the safety of all riders and ponies on the field. The player who last hit the ball has right of way and no player can cross the line in front of that player unless there’s no danger to pony or rider. If a pony crosses a player in a dangerous manner, a foul is called. Also for safety reasons, left-handed polo players must swing the mallet with their right hands. The exceptions Yes, you will see players pushing each other. Known as ‘riding off’, it’s all part of the game, and as long as it’s not done at a dangerous angle, it’s allowed. Sometimes the players hook their mallets together, which is also allowed, provided it’s below the level of the opponent’s shoulder – and never in front of a pony’s legs.

Harry Semenoff makes a fifth attempt at realising his late father’s dream of seeing the Semco name on the BMW NZ Open trophy. For the past five years, Harry has recruited players from the glamour spots of the polo world, Argentina and England in his quest for NZ Open glory. With that pesky old pandemic ruling those visiting players out, it could be that, ironically, the answer to winning was right on his own doorstep all the time. Where better to start than with the world’s best female player, the amazing Nina Clarkin who divides her year between the UK and New Zealand. Add a wily ‘old master’ like multiple NZ representative Simon Keyte and a pinch of audacious talent in the form of Will Hunt and this might just be the recipe for ultimate success. It’ll certainly be the recipe for some exciting matches in the early stages of the tournament, not least because Nina is married to JP Clarkin who is playing for Tiger Mystery Creek, and Will’s brother Tom is playing for Seismic Performance. If this is the team that gets the Semenoff name on the Open trophy, there’s one certainty: there’ll be emotion-charged celebrations aplenty.

Six goal international representative Thomas Hunt is the anchor for this talented team. With his fast and incredibly nimble style of play, his team mates will need to be on the ball and ready to back him up. Clevedon players Arthur Morgenstern and James Worker are certainly up to the task. Arthur started playing at the comparatively late age of 35 and despite being told he’d never win the NZ Open, he’s done just that no less than five times. James is looking to etch his name on the trophy again too in this, his sixth NZ Open, and will bring to the field all the exuberant commitment he brings to everything he does. Luckily he also has talent in spades, as does the fourth team member, Waikato-based international and new father Matt Pitts who’s known for his powerful drives and strong defence. This team are a new combination, who have been showing promise in the lead-up tournaments this season. They’ve all got plenty of horsepower and if they gel, they’re going to be hard to beat.

Clevedon is the home of polo in Auckland and it’s also home to the Hololio Polo Club, owned and run by the Jones family. Cousins Jeremy (JJ) and Henry Jones are both capped internationals and no strangers to this tournament. Adding to the family theme, they will be joined for the first time this year by Henry’s younger brother, Edward Elworthy-Jones who will be making his NZ Open debut. It’s fortunate that the family have a wealth of superb horses at their disposal, as the players can use eight or 10 ponies each in a single match at this level. The ponies will be very pleased with the signing of the new team sponsor – equine joint supplement 4cyte – a particularly savvy partnership helping the equine stars perform to the best of their abilities. The Jones boys need a team captain from outside the family who can keep up with them and keep the familial peace on the field. Gisborne-bred top Kiwi international Glenn Sherriff decided that two weeks’ isolation in a Christchurch hotel was a price worth paying to return from the UK and take up the challenge.

The Waikato certainly punches above its weight in terms of turning out top level polo players, and this team is led by two of its finest. With the change in team handicap levels this year, the dynamic duo have scoured the country for two up and coming players on lower handicaps to round out the team. With the Tiger Polo Academy, a very successful incubator for young polo talent, handily located at JP’s Mystery Creek Polo Club, the right people for the job were close at hand. Eighteen year old Pukekohe lad Ben Johnstone and Morrinsville nineteen year old Kaleb Watson have been selected for what is a bucket list opportunity for young players. This is a step up to the big time for both these boys and they’ll be hungry to prove their worth alongside two legends.

The van den Brink family are great supporters of polo in New Zealand, with five family members actively playing, and there’s nothing chicken about this Brinks team. Matt van den Brink has made a comeback after 13 years out of the saddle to play at the number one position for this tournament. The rising star and one to watch here is Australian dynamo Indi Bennetto. The product of a passionate polo family, Indi knows how to get the best out of her horses and has some serious grit. She’s talented, fiercely competitive and won’t be easily intimidated. Captaining the team is another comeback kid Craig Wilson, who called time on his highly successful international career two years ago. Craig’s been coaxed out of premature retirement on his Waikato farm for the 2021 NZ Open; his years of experience, cool head and strategic thinking are going to be invaluable here. Rounding out this highly motivated foursome is Jonny Coddington, another senior international player who divides his year between Cheshire in the UK and the family’s stunning 300-acre polo stud in Hawke’s Bay.

If it’s horsepower, this team could well have the golden ticket with legendary polo pony breeder and trainer Ross Ainsley at the helm. Horses bred and trained at the Ainsley’s Pukekohe farm can be found playing at elite level across the globe. Ross plays a distinctive game; his mounts are nimble and responsive, he’s rarely beaten to the ball. Guy Higginson has ventured north from Christchurch to play alongside Ross. This rangy, young international is known for his fast running game and won’t take any prisoners. Third team member, up and coming professional George Deverell, can usually be found playing at the prestigious English clubs, but we’re fortunate to see him here this summer, being a dual citizen of the UK and New Zealand thanks to his Kiwi dad. Last but not least, Sam Wyborn makes his debut appearance at the NZ Open. Sam has played alongside Ross Ainsley for many years so knows his job in the team well.
