The mother of invention THIS MONTH WE ARE TALKING INNOVATION. NEW ZEALAND MAY BE relatively small, but it punches above its weight when it comes to making things work.

From the first commercial bungy site and practicalities like reusable envelopes, to more efficient sheep shearing (of course), and the tools closer to our trade like the portable sawmill, Kiwis are nothing if not inventive.

And when it comes to logging, when there’s a better, and safer, way to do things, we put our heads together and make it happen. Something that is clear from the object of our feature on log haulage this month.

We know it happens hundreds of times a day. The log loader will unload the trailer, ready for the next load, and, at the other end, either at a processing mill or often a seaport, the trailer will be hoisted back onto the truck by a loader or a hoist on a gantry.

However, despite new developments and training, lifting trailers off the ground remains inherently risky. Enter Director of Aztec Forestry Transport Developments, Peter Phillips, who, together with Patchell Industries took up the challenge to create positive change. The result? The Safe-T-Loader, a self-loading logging trailer. Safety first means hands-off.

They do say necessity is the mother of invention and it’s clear great products are driven by great minds, as are strong and flourishing organisations. Which is why this month we celebrate 10 Gisborne students who recently became the first graduates of the Tūranga Ararau nationally recognised Whakatiputanga Ngahere New Zealand Diploma in Forest Management Level 6 – soon to be the only institution in the country offering this qualification. Future forest managers and nurturing great minds indeed!

So, wrap up warm and enjoy, because by the time you open these pages winter will be settling in. Truckloads of firewood will be making their way around our shores; gumboots will be earning their keep and there will be no better feeling than a steaming sip of your favourite beverage out of a warm mug when smoko comes around.

Planting the trees we need?

NEW ZEALAND NEEDS TO TAKE A LONG, HARD LOOK AT ITS approach to forestry and ask whether we are establishing the forests we want in the long run, says the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment (PCE) in his new report, Alt-F Reset: Examining the drivers of forestry in New Zealand.

In the report, the Commissioner, Simon Upton, points out that the future shape of our forests will reflect today’s policies, just as past policies created the forests we see in New Zealand today.

“We may live to regret our current approach as it is driving a wave of land use change with significant environmental, economic and social risks,” he warns.

He clarifies that his concern is not with forests planted for timber production: “In places where they can be safely harvested, production forests are the backbone of an important industry.

Because the people who plant them intend to harvest them, they have every incentive to look after them.

“But new permanent forests being planted as carbon offsets through the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (NZ ETS) carry long-term risks for future generations.”

These carbon forests, mostly made up of radiata pine, are effectively locking up huge areas of New Zealand’s landscapes forever. Yet the Crown could face implicit carbon liabilities if those forests are damaged by pests, disease, fire or extreme weather events in the future, he says.

“As an alternative to pine, many New Zealanders are calling for larger scale native afforestation. That is easier said than done.

Successfully establishing native forests is much more expensive and takes a great deal more effort.”

Any hopes that the current approach, including the NZ ETS, could incentivise establishing other types of forests – including native forests at scale – are misplaced, the Commissioner says. “The reality is that under current regulatory and economic settings, almost nothing can compete with radiata pine for short-term returns.”

Deficiencies in our knowledge are also holding back alternatives, including natives, he adds.

“We know much less about all aspects of alternative forestry, from seed germination and establishment techniques to the economics of alternative management regimes and the properties of alternative timbers. This lack of information makes anything other than pine a potentially high-risk and expensive undertaking.”

He emphasises that despite the risks, improving opportunities for alternative species and management regimes is worth exploring.

“As well as building resilience into the forestry estate, some alternative species have beneficial traits that make them better suited for specific areas, such as landscapes with erodible soils.

These species could also offer new economic opportunities, such as access to high value timber markets.

“Different management approaches can also allow for low-intensity

timber production while providing long-term environmental values, like biodiversity, carbon and erosion control,” Mr Upton explains.

Alt-F Reset sets out 15 recommendations to address the risks that New Zealand’s current approach to forestry runs. These include phasing out forestry from the NZ ETS and improving the knowledge base that is needed to underpin greater use of native and alternative exotic species, as well as different management approaches.

“The forestry system we have today was started through government intervention and investment, and if we want something different then similar intervention will be needed.”

Pine still key Gisborne District Council says the report reflects the challenges Council has already been working to tackle in Gisborne.

Mayor Rehette Stoltz says the PCE’s report supports the need for diversifying land use in the region and sustainable approaches to forestry harvesting.

“The report makes it clear that a one-size-fits-all forestry model isn’t working. Here in Gisborne, we’ve seen first-hand the problems caused by planting on erosion-prone land.

“Pine will continue to play a key role in our region’s economy, but relying too heavily on one species creates real environmental and economic risks. In erosion-prone areas, the impacts of current clearfell practices are too severe to ignore.”

Council has increasingly stepped up its efforts to support the region’s transition to more sustainable land uses, recognising the urgent need to respond to erosion-prone landscapes and the longterm wellbeing of communities across Gisborne.

“With unique environmental vulnerabilities, we can no longer afford to do things the way they’ve always been done,” says Mayor Stoltz.

“Council has been working with our communities, industry partners and mana whenua to look for better, more lasting land use options that protect both people and the environment.” NZL

Forest owners urge caution NEW ZEALAND FOREST OWNERS ASSOCIATION (NZFOA) CHIEF Executive, Dr Elizabeth Heeg, says while Government’s Alt-F Reset: Examining the drivers of forestry in New Zealand report raises important considerations for land use adaptation in a changing climate, some of its recommendations would be counterintuitive to progressing climate action.

“Climate action is urgently needed and, as it stands, there is a question mark over New Zealand meeting its 2050 emissions targets,” she says.

“Forestry remains at the centre of any future success so it makes no sense to limit the tools we do have available. Pulling back from the ETS without a tangible, alternative approach is risky at best.”

Forest owners are also concerned about the pressure that removal of forestry offsets from the ETS would place on operators, particularly farmers and woodlot owners.

“Small-scale farm foresters account for approximately 80 percent of ETS participants,” Ms Heeg says. “These farmers utilise the ETS by providing an ecosystem service, that in turn funds their forestry management.

“Removing forestry from the ETS will significantly impact the revenue streams of smaller operators and disincentivise any further planting of trees on farms which will likely detract from creating a more resilient mosaic of land uses in addition to meeting climate goals.

“The revenue lost from forests entered into the ETS must be considered carefully to ensure a fair and sustainable approach for forestry nationwide.”

Ms Heeg says the recommendations around the ETS appear to be driven by a misconception that forests are consuming valuable land at an exponential rate.

Production forests currently occupy six percent of New Zealand’s total land area. Sheep and beef farming occupies five times that.

“If New Zealand’s forest estate expanded by the projected 894,000 hectares detailed in the report, that would only constitute a three percent increase over 25 years,” Ms Heeg says. “Even then, there’s enough land for our rural industries to co-exist.

“Forest owners are supportive of a mosaic approach to land use to ensure productivity of all rural sectors can continue while building environmental resilience in the face of a changing climate.”

Ms Heeg says the industry is already having extensive land use conversations across the board and working with various rural sectors.

“We need a more unified approach to climate adaptation.

We’re already having conversations with Federated Farmers, an organisation we share many members with.

“Trees, be they native or exotic species, help diversify farmland, improve environmental performance and provide timber for construction while reducing emissions.”

Navigating the unique challenges of certain landscapes, such as highly erodible land, has been another focus of these land use conversations with a view to ensuring future land use is fit for purpose and rural industries remain prosperous.

Ms Heeg says the report’s recommendation to ban clear-fell harvesting in ‘high-risk’ areas will raise concern for some forestry operations, particularly those navigating harvest on complex terrain.

“Greater detail is needed on what is deemed ‘high-risk’ and the implications of banning harvest on such land before any recommendations are adopted. Particularly in regions like Gisborne where forestry generates a high degree of employment for the community and the rural economy.

“Forest owners are working hard to ensure resilience of their land and are exploring new options to manage land that is highly susceptible to erosion, including voluntarily retiring high-risk areas that are no longer suited to production forestry.

“Our sector will continue to collaborate with Government, councils, communities and other rural industries to find more resilient solutions for land use in these complex areas.

“New Zealand’s forests are one of its greatest environmental assets and we welcome the opportunity this report provides to have a meaningful conversation about how we manage and sustain them in an uncertain future.” NZL May 2025 | NZ LOGGER 5

Impact of Overseas Investment Act reform on forestry Story: Sarah Blackmore and David Raudkivi of Russell McVeagh GOVERNMENT HAS ANNOUNCED SIGNIFICANT REFORM OF THE Overseas Investment Act 2005. Associate Minister of Finance, David Seymour, has described the reforms as a package that “will speed up decisions and provide more confidence to investors, while protecting our national interests”.

Existing forestry As a result of the upcoming changes, investment in existing forestry (i.e. the acquisition of forestry rights and land used, exclusively, or nearly exclusively, for forestry activities), which currently falls under the industry specific ‘Special test relating to forestry activities’ (Special Forestry Test), will instead be subject to a streamlined ‘National interest test’ (National Interest Test), alongside other asset classes.

‘Phase one’ of the new National Interest Test will entail a rapid triage and risk-assessment process which will allow the OIO to grant consent to low-risk applications within 15 working days. This is a significant reduction from the current assessment timeframe of 55 working days for a Special Forestry Test application.

Only those applications that the OIO identifies as having national security risks, or which fall within a high-risk class of investment (such as investments in ‘strategically important businesses’ and investments by foreign governments (or their associates)), will proceed to ‘phase two’.

The Government intends to empower the regulator to impose conditions on consent granted under ‘phase one’ of the National Interest Test to realise the benefits of the investment and, where appropriate, minimise risk. The OIO has indicated, in a forestry context, these conditions could be the same as the standard conditions currently imposed under the Special Forestry Test, namely: • an obligation to continue to use land exclusively, or nearly exclusively, for forestry activities; • an obligation to harvest and to replace each harvested crop of trees with a new crop of trees; • an obligation not to register the crop of trees as “permanent forestry” (or any category similar to permanent forestry) in the Emissions Trading Scheme established under the Climate Change Response Act 2002; and • an obligation to maintain existing arrangements.

We consider that the continuation of the standard conditions imposed under the Special Forestry Test, designed to keep land in rotation forestry, would represent a missed opportunity by Government.

It is worth noting that the Special Forestry Test was originally introduced as an alternative to the Benefit Test to facilitate the acquisition of existing forestry land by overseas investors who historically struggled to demonstrate the required point of difference from a hypothetical New Zealand investor under the counterfactual test. With a clear shift in focus away from a benefits analysis, it is not immediately apparent to us what basis exists for the standard conditions to be imposed.

We would like to see Government recognition that there will be circumstances when it will be necessary, and the best use of land, for existing plantation forestry to transition into permanent forest or other coexisting uses, such as for windfarm generation or other infrastructure, but which is clearly not farmland or residential land.

Farm-to-forest conversions Reflective of the special status of farmland, the Government’s reforms will not modify the current consent requirements for investment in farmland, which require that overseas investors meet both the ‘Investor Test’ and the ‘Benefit to New Zealand Test’ (Benefit Test).

Accordingly, applications for farm-to-forestry conversions will continue to be made under the Benefit Test. These applications have historically taken longer, cost more, and given rise to greater transactional uncertainty than applications made under the Special Forestry Test. The difference between the consent pathways available for existing forestry and conversion forestry, particularly in terms of time and cost, is set to become more pronounced once existing forestry applications are being determined under the streamlined National Interest Test.

At this point, it is unclear whether the benefits that forestry conversion applicants will need to demonstrate to satisfy the Benefit Test will remain the same under the new OIO regime, but our expectation is that the evaluation of afforestation opportunities in New Zealand will continue to require careful consideration of the land use capability (LUC) class of the land, which categories rural land based on its suitability for different productive uses. The OIO’s current approach to the assessment of benefits in farm-to-forest conversions, favouring LUC class 5 and above land, is already aligned with the ETS policy changes announced by the Government in December 2024, which include: • A moratorium on registering exotic species of forest land in the ETS if planted on LUC class 1 to 5 farmland (being land most suitable for arable and pastoral use); and • A national annual hectare limit of 15,000 hectares of exotic forest

land registered in the ETS if planted on LUC class 6 farmland (under a “first-in, first served” allocation system).

Ministerial Directive Letter An updated Ministerial Directive Letter will be issued before the new legislation is enacted to help guide the OIO’s decisionmaking when assessing applications under the new National Interest Test. The Ministerial Directive Letter will also direct the regulator to “appropriately consider historic land use to manage cases where vendors convert farmland for another use

not captured under the farmland definition prior to selling, to avoid the consent process”. The OIO has confirmed it will continue to look closely at the acquisition of forestry land that was recently used as farmland, such as newly planted first rotation forests, in particular testing to see whether there is any relationship between the vendor and investor, but considers that the new Ministerial Directive Letter will endorse the OIO’s current approach rather than requiring any change in focus.

Legislation is expected to be enacted before the end of 2025. NZL

NZFM to resume pine export to India NEW ZEALAND FOREST MANAGERS (NZFM) will resume New Zealand pine log exports to India in the first half of 2025. This marks the first time NZFM has exported pine logs to India since the 2019/20 period.

“This is the beginning of a renewed focus on the Indian market,” says NZFM Chairman, Jonathan Cameron. Historically, NZFM has exported between 40,000 to 50,000 JAS m3 of logs per annum to India, with the last shipment occurring in January 2020.

As part of its own diversification strategy, NZFM aims to expand its customer base beyond its current markets in South Korea, Japan, and China.

“India represents a significant opportunity for growth, leveraging New Zealand’s reputation for high-quality timber,” Mr Cameron says.

Working with industry and partners, the company plans to introduce New Zealand pine logs to a variety of highvalue applications in India, including interior products, structural timber, and building supplies – much beyond their

traditional use in industrial packaging and K construction products.

Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, highlighted NZFM’s efforts as a reflection of New Zealand’s broader export strategy: “It’s companies like NZFM that are driving growth in export value by promoting innovative, higher-value use cases for New Zealand’s high-quality logs. This aligns with our goal to double the value of exports and showcase the premium quality of what New Zealand offers.”

“NZFM is highly supportive of the Letter of Intent on Forestry Cooperation signed by Ministers on the Prime Minister’s Trade Delegation to India and is keen to collaborate and cooperate with government officials, industry, and our counterparts in India on the areas outlined in the Letter,” Mr Cameron adds.

“Particular areas of interest are exchange of knowledge, processes and innovation as well as exploring the adaptation and application of cuttingedge technologies we have seen on the Prime Ministers Trade Mission to India into our New Zealand forestry industry” NZL

Carbon credit deal hits forestry gold NGĀPORO WAIMARINO FOREST TRUST, BASED IN THE RUAPEHU district, has struck a 10-year carbon credit leasing arrangement with forestry developer Tāmata Hauhā.

The deal leases secured carbon credits from just under half of the Trust’s forests in the Waimarino, Raetihi and Manganui-o-te-Ao area to Tāmata Hauhā, which then on-sells the credits through the Emissions Trading Scheme.

It will earn the Trust about $9.3 million in annual payments of around $930,000.

Trust Chair, Tāwhiao McMaster, says this type of leasing deal is the first of its kind in the country, but other land trusts are now also taking up the opportunity.

He says the same number of credits or the financial equivalent (whichever is greater) will return to the Trust at the end of the 10-year arrangement.

“It’s a no-lose deal for beneficiaries,” Mr McMaster says.

“We’ve leased out credits that will come back to our people and created a pool of income that won’t see any negative loss.

“Whatever the credits are worth at the end of 10 years, we’ve already benefited from them.”

The arrangement creates two key sources of income for the Trust from the same forestry blocks.

Waimarino Forests, a subsidiary company owned by Ernslaw One, grows exotic timber forest on 38 blocks leased from the Trust.

“We’ve already got the forest. It is already producing with Ernslaw One. We’ve got the credits. We just had to figure out a way to profit from the credits without selling them,” Mr McMaster says.

Tāmata Hauhā is leasing the credits to cover its own carbon forestry blocks, which are growing but have yet to produce carbon units for the Emissions Trading Scheme.

The deal means the company can participate in the scheme without having to wait for its own forests to sequestrate carbon.

Ngāporo Waimarino Forest Trust was established in 1973 with its first vested block, Waimarino A17.

It is now responsible for 43 Māori Land blocks covering 6937 hectares (17,134 acres), mostly around the isolated Manganui-ote-Ao River.

Some of the land is leased for forestry to Ernslaw One and other land is managed by the Trust for ahikā (ancestral, tribal) use and kaitiakitanga (stewardship) purposes.

About 70% of the Trust’s forests are in production.

Its native reserves and some forestry blocks were not included in the arrangement. Although they do produce carbon credits, that land has been set aside for other schemes, including conservation and biodiversity protection, says Mr McMaster.

“Prior to this carbon leasing arrangement, we didn’t have the growth amount of pūtea (income) to do that,” he adds.

“The first year of the carbon credit leasing arrangement has been paid, and the Trust has strategised, planned and scoped specific works for the Trust’s benefit and further financial growth.”

The plans include increasing the number and reach of grants and scholarships for beneficiaries, strengthening uri (descendant) connection with the whenua, and supporting cultural revitalisation.

The Trust has already doubled its grants and scholarships, extending support for academic, cultural and sporting activities with new grants for kaumātua wellbeing and supporting whānau in projects that connect with their whenua, whakapapa and Reo Māori.

The Trust also plans to establish annual mokopapa – wānanga at which uri will prepare for and receive moko kauae and mataora (facial moko).

“Moko is instrumental to cultural revitalisation. The intent is that uri will be able to engage in up to four wānanga with our moko artists. They will hear moko kōrero from our region and wānanga the type of moko that will be uniquely given to our people, incorporating aspects of their own whakapapa, mātauranga and mahinga,” says Mr McMaster. Extent of gully erosion in Gisborne mapped “MONITORING GISBORNE’S GULLY EROSION IS IMPORTANT as, unchecked, a gully could continue to expand and affect surrounding hill country, risking creating significant amounts of sediment that could be washed into streams and rivers in a weather event,” says Director Forestry Insights at Te Uru Rākau – New Zealand Forest Service (TUR-NZFS), Debbie Ward.

The change and severity of gullies caused by erosion in the Gisborne District following Cyclone Gabrielle has been mapped in a report by TURNZFS. The mapping is based on post-cyclone Gabrielle aerial imagery and complements three previous inventories from 1957, 1997 and 2017.

The report gives spatial analysis results, current assessments on gully activity, provides historical and current causal factors, and makes observations for next steps and further analysis.

Key findings include: • There are currently 1,449 active gullies, comprising 2,279 ha, identified in the Gisborne District.

• 220 gullies, with a composite area of 114 ha, were formed since the last assessment in 2017.

• The regional distribution of active gullies has changed little since treatments to remediate gully erosion began.

• 97% of the active gullies are within size and range where treatment will restore stability and reduce the supply of sediment generated.

• 75% (1,730 ha) of the active gully area comprises gullies which are individually <10 ha which have a high probability of being effectively stabilised if treated now.

• Only gullies >10 ha, which comprise around 24% of the land (548 ha) show limited or no signs of stabilising.

“The report will help inform government policy and land management decisions on future land use around gullies,” Ms Ward says. “This includes supporting identifying options for a Land Overlay 3B, (an extension of the current land overlay framework in the Tairāwhiti Resource Management Plan), where the worst eroding land across the region will need to transition out of plantation forestry and/or pastoral farming and into permanent vegetation cover.”

The report was in response to a recommendation by the Ministerial Inquiry into Land Use (MILU) following the widespread damage by cyclones Hale and Gabrielle in 2023 to mitigate the effects of future storm events. NZL

Heli-logging up close AS HELI-LOGGING WORK CAME TO AN END ON THE WHAKATĀNE District Council forestry block on Valley Road last month, Apanui School students got to celebrate with a visit by Kāhu Helicopter Services’ Black Hawk.

One of the Kahu team has children at Apanui School and took the opportunity to give the students a close-up look at the helicopter with a clamber around in the back of the beast before it headed out of town on its next mission.

Logging work on the forestry block began on January 20. It was considered necessary as there was a risk the trees, which had reached maturity, could fall on their own.

The work was expected to take about four weeks, however, in mid-February the helicopter was employed to help with the last section of trees which were growing on a steep slope, as it was the safest way to manage the operation.

Good for wool but what about wood?

THE RECENT ANNOUNCEMENT BY Government directing public agencies to consider using wool fibres over synthetic options is a sensible decision, but it is disappointing that wood fibres that possess the same innovative, sustainable and health benefits to wool have been overlooked, says Chief Executive of the Wood Processors and Manufacturers Association (WPMA), Mark Ross.

“The wood products that we are talking about are not only renewable but have economic and environmental advantages when it comes to carbon storage and supporting our rural communities,” says Mr Ross.

“With New Zealand’s sustainable forestry model, using locally grown wood products incentivises our circular bioeconomy, boosts New Zealand’s domestic wood processing industry, and supports our drive to meet our climate change targets.

“Forecasting by Deloitte’s indicates that

changing our market share to wood products by 25% would result in the removal of an additional 920,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the environment each year. Greater use of timber in domestic building and construction is critical to rebuilding New Zealand’s economy and providing regional jobs in a highly productive sector.”

As an example, engineered wood products, such as cross laminated timber and glulam, offer multiple benefits to New Zealand, including reduced construction time, lower carbon footprint, and excellent thermal performance as compared to traditional building materials like concrete or steel, he says. Mass timber has gained recognition for its versatility and globally is increasingly being adopted in residential and commercial construction projects.

“Incentivising investment and growth within the wood processing and manufacturing industry is part of the Government’s plan that

was announced by Forestry Minister, Todd McClay at Mystery Creek Field Days in 2024.

Hence, the chance to back this announcement by prioritising wood along with wool products in Government building and construction projects is a missed opportunity.

“We now call on the Government to align the wool directive with wood, directing consideration of using wood fibre products in the construction and refurbishment of government buildings by agencies,” Mr Ross adds. NZL

Bringing the fun to forestry THE SOUTHERN NORTH ISLAND WOOD COUNCIL COORDINATED and recently attended the Central Districts Field Days, in Feilding.

The Forestry Hub featured stands from Discover Forestry, Te Uru Rākau – New Zealand Forest Service, Competenz, Forest360, Forme Forest Consultants and the New Zealand Farm Forestry Association.

With good interest across the forestry industry, the hub allowed attendees to learn more about the forestry sector and to have their questions answered while free children’s books and resources were handed out to the crowd by Discover Forestry.

CEO Discover Forestry, Erica Kinder, says, “A highlight was the running of the Golden Loader competition for the third year, the chance to find the best loader driver in forestry. We had entrants from as far away as Murupara, Turangi and Hawke’s Bay. One of the best bits for me was seeing the brother and sister duo, Tracey and Jacob Keefe from McCormack Logging in Rotorua, fight it out for sibling bragging rights. Both are awesome loader drivers who had many whanau supporting them in Fielding. He beat out 18 competitors to take home the trophy, $500 in vouchers and bragging rights, to the delight of the large crowds at field days who gathered to watch the competition run over two days.

Central Districts Field Days has been running for over 30 years and is the largest regional Field Days in New Zealand, generating over $50 million in sales revenue, the Field Days has now grown to more than 500 sites. This is the first time the Golden Loader Competition has been run at the regional Field Days and there is now appetite to take the competition to other areas, potentially at regional shows or Field Days to showcase forestry skills with machinery and allow the public to witness forestry activities outside of the bush. IT’S AMAZING THE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN THIS JOB. I ARRIVE too early at the log port operation in Picton so I go to the tourist lookout area above the yard to see if there are any good photo opportunities.

Sure enough the view there is an impressive display of a largescale, well-ordered logging industry workplace. It’s only a few minutes before several tourists drive up and are wowed by the spectacular scenery of the C3 log marshalling site below us. One of the tourists, a Texan, comes over and asks me if I know anything about this industry. Well now, have I got a story for you…

C3 Picton has a vessel in loading today, the African Pelican, so they are busy first thing this morning but once we get in there, we get a thorough Health and Safety induction. It’s the first time I’ve been shown where defibrillators are!

We throw the doors open on the Volvo L260H wheel loader and new Iron Tester, Brady Clements, points out the two sub doors below the bonnet that allow us to check the water and oil from the ground without lifting the main bonnet. Very handy and it saves a lot of time.

is the massive muffler. It’s almost as big as the engine. No wonder it’s so quiet. And grunty. She’s packing 416 horsepower (310KW).

A nod to uptime Improvements include 15% greater productivity. There’s an updated transmission, a new shifting programme and converter.

The wheelbase has been increased along with an optimised weight distribution of the front frame and lifting arm system. Using the Volvo D13E (13 litre) engine, this machine has a 6% increase in power and 5% increase in torque on the previous model. Efficiency improvements have resulted in a 10% reduction in fuel consumption.

In a nod to uptime the machine is run on a Contract service agreement with TDX along with machine monitoring by a Volvo Active Care package for live satellite monitoring for faults and any issues.

Designed to move more logs at a lower cost, this one came out of the factory spec’d for log loading rather than shifting aggregates but C3 went a bit further by removing the 1500kg counterweight and having a New Zealand made Ensign 2500kg counterweight fitted instead to improve stability under load and as a nod to the solid,

I ask the C3 Picton Branch Manager, Nephi Anderson, where the regular operator of the 260H is. It’s starting to look like the last superskid operation we visited where nobody wanted to own up to running it. Nephi says everybody runs this 260 so I ask if he could choose the most interesting character. Perhaps somebody who wants to be famous, or at least doesn’t mind being photographed.

“That’ll be Cody,” he says and soon arrives back with a young woman, Cody Molloy. While she gets the machine ready, another young woman drives up in a Heagney Bros log truck and starts unchaining. Some hardworking women in the Top of the South then.

Hidden talent Cody first got a look at logging by being taken to work with her dad as a kid. Her dad was a Level Four who mostly worked as a machine operator in crews around Gisborne and also did some training of fellow crew members.

“I didn’t really consider being a machine operator as a career path for myself,” Cody says. “until I got real interested in getting some of my licences and saw some wheel loaders were available to learn on.

I decided then that this was what I wanted to do. Before I had done much more thinking about it, I was loading a truck with sand on a bucket wheel loader and then got asked to show up at the log port in New Plymouth to run a Volvo G model to do some log handling with the log forks on. They basically just threw me into it with no experience and luckily I picked it up fairly quick and enjoyed it. I guess it was just a hidden talent I didn’t know I had.

“That progressed to cleaning up the stacks, moving wood and stacking it, and tidying up if somebody was in a hurry and left a mess in some stacks. Then they let me unload some trailers and I eventually moved on to unloading trucks. I jumped on the high stacker last year and that’s actually my favourite machine at the moment.”

She comes across as quiet and humble but it turns out Cody gets flown pretty much all over the country to help load vessels for C3. Most of her workmates are at this Picton site, but for the work-away jobs she favours the log port at Wellington for the best crew vibe. Nelson is a close second and the Port of New Plymouth is rated pretty highly too.

“It’s nice to have a change of job site, although lately, since we got this debarker installed, I’ve mostly been feeding and unloading that,” she says.

I get talking with Brady for a bit about the debarker, how it eliminates the need for dangerous gasses on the top stowed logs

When it comes to machines, the Volvo 260H is up there among Cody’s favourites: “It’s just such a smooth machine to run, that’s what I thought on the first day it arrived. Smooth to drive, smooth hydraulics, smooth braking, good suspension seat. It’s just a nice machine to drive. Like driving on a cloud. The cameras are really good too. Super clear so you can see exactly what’s going on around you.”

There are also three of the tall green Sennebogen high stacker loaders here that Cody runs.

“Being solid rubber tyred machines they are quite hard on the body, they are not as comfortable as the Volvo but they need to be

like that for stability at those heights,” she says. Some of the older members of the crew can only spend a limited amount of time in these before aches and pains start, so it’s more favoured by the younger operators, she adds.

An early start Cody starts work at 5.30am when it’s still dark all year round and finishes at 5.30pm. That’s a big day and those early starts show a good level of dedication to the job.

Nephi has been working in port operations for 14 years, starting out dragging wire ropes around in stevedoring roles after a tip-off from his father-in-law.

“My father-in-law was running the Wagner loaders at Napier Port. I never got to go on those but I can run most of the machines here fairly proficiently if required. We do have quite a complex operation here… the schedules can be quite upset by the weather. For example if a vessel arrives in New Zealand waters with a back load of palm kernel, that can only be unloaded if it is dry weather. So a few days’ rain can disrupt that schedule and then we are doing a bit of hurry up and wait, and then when it’s all go, we need plenty of good, powerful machines on the job and good operators to try and catch up some of that down time,” he says.

Here to work Nephi’s first log loader was a Volvo 220: “They were pretty much the Rolls Royce of the fleet the new G models, they were just coming out then and they have held their ground obviously because we keep buying

them. I learnt most of the basics of operating them from my father-inlaw, doing firewood around the log yard. Developed good log handling skills there and the same with the diggers and grapples, just cleaning up broken pieces of logs.” Nephi warns us that these two new 260’s are no show ponies; they are here to work and have not been cleaned for photos.

With all the Volvo loaders zipping around it soon gets a bit confusing and Nephi points out that the one I just photographed has an operator with one leg and it was one of the earlier 220 Volvo models that is still going strong.

I STARTED MY FORESTRY CAREER AT the age of 16, a few years ago now, straight out of school in 2006. I was always interested in logging from a young age and was chomping at the bit to get out and get into it. Having worked for a few years logging, I then made the decision to head to university and complete a Bachelor of Forestry Science degree for sh*ts and giggles.

After finishing my degree, I returned to logging full time before taking up a role in Rotorua working as a harvest manager in Kaingaroa Forest. I thoroughly enjoyed my time up there and met a lot of amazing people. Then I moved back to Nelson and went back to logging and undertaking health and safety.

While logging I learnt to operate all different types of machinery, including wheel loaders. When an opportunity came about to start my own business relief operating and providing health and safety services for logging contractors, I then started Forestry Safety Management. Part of my business includes operating wheel loaders and other machinery for C3, and I jumped at the chance to do an Iron Test on a new Volvo 260H loader.

Good and easy

It is always good to get behind the controls of these big wheel loaders, gives you a

buzz driving them around with 18 plus tonnes of logs in the beak. The cabs are the same as the smaller models, just the rest of the loader around you is on steroids.

The first noticeable difference between the H series over the older G series is the bonnet on the H series – it is a lot higher.

The cab layout is still similar to the G series with cosmetic changes. The dash gauge layout is a lot more modern in the H series, providing good information to the operator.

The daily checks are easy to undertake with all fluids being able to be checked from the ground.

The transmission oil is easy to check – the gauge is in the pivot and very easy to access. The hydraulic oil level is also good and easy to check as, when climbing into the cab, you can see the gauge between the bonnet and the back of the cab. Good to see these features have continued through to the H series.

The Volvo seats are nice and comfortable and it is easy to adjust the settings to get the seat to where you want it. The vision out of the cab is excellent with the nice big curved front window that Volvo has been using for many years still present in the new H series. C3 fits bars to the front window of its loaders to provide improved safety for the operator. These bars are designed well and don’t hinder the vision – before too long you forget they are even there.

If it ain’t broke…

I unload a few road trucks first up with the loader. The lifting power of these 260Hs is good, they break out the logs effortlessly, however you do need to keep the revs on.

With the log head tilted back and sight of both fork tips you can position the machine easily to unload trucks. Once I have the tips lined up and starting to slide under the bottom logs in the load I start to tilt the head forward slightly to avoid the heel of the beak contacting the mud guards or fuel tank on the truck, as it could easily happen.

There is good, positive feel in the log head and good power in the close of the beak. It clamps the logs well. One other thing I notice with the 260H over the 220H with the slightly different boom set up is, when you are unloading trucks you have to slowly tilt the log head back as you are lifting. If you don’t tilt the head, it naturally tilts forward when the boom is going up

and the head will drop forward. Easy to overcome, it is just a matter of adjusting your operating technique.

The machine feels stable with a good head full of logs. The second truck I unload has a full load of K5.8 on it and the machine feels good as gold. When loading the debarker I pick up a larger head full of K5.8 and the machine is good and stable. The machine is nice and smooth with plenty of

power when you put your foot down. With 18-plus tonnes in the log head it doesn’t lack get up and go, quickly reaching the governed speed of 20km. Steering is really good. Controls for the boom and log head have a really good feel and they are nice and easy to use and ergonomically designed to use all day and not get sore fingers and hands.

There are a few differences between this model and the smaller 220H but it is just a matter of adjusting the way you operate it and she’s all good. It’s good to see Volvo has kept the bulk of the wheel loader similar to the previous models, making changes which only improve the machine for the operator. SELF-LOADING LOGGING T Swinging trailers through the air on the end of a chain might be a staple operation in forestry but it comes loaded with risk. Enter the Safe-T-Loader. Ian Parkes investigates.

L

OGGING TRUCK AND TRAILER COMBOS are a common sight in many parts of the country. So are empty logging trucks on their way back to the forest, this time with the trailer piggybacking on the 30 NZ LOGGER | May 2025

truck. This trailer on truck arrangement is efficient on the road and it also puts enough weight over the drive wheels for the truck to climb back up steep forestry roads to get the next load.

We know it happens hundreds of times a day. The log loader will unload the trailer, ready for the next load, and, at the other end, either at a processing mill or often a seaport, the trailer will be hoisted

Working with heavy machinery, often in remote locations, involves risk but the industry and organisations like the Log Transport Safety Council (LTSC), manufacturers like Patchell Industries and operators have been working hard for years on driving down these risks. Drivers

receive detailed safety training on loading and unloading trailers. Trailer designs have also improved to the point drivers can now slew and latch drawbars under their trailers while the trailers are still close to the ground.

However, lifting trailers off the ground remains inherently risky. Some years ago, Director of Aztec Forestry Transport

Developments, Peter Phillips, very nearly witnessed a serious accident first-hand.

He saw a chain snap as a trailer was being lifted. It slammed to the ground, the freeswinging drawbar slapping the earth and bouncing up close enough to the driver to whip off his helmet.

closer it would have broken his neck,” he says.

Tokoroa-based forestry owner, Manulife Investment Management, is continuing the drive to improve safety. In 2023, at a regular key supplier distribution meeting, its Health and Safety Manager challenged distribution contractors to come up with a way to reduce the risks in lifting 6-tonne trailers in the air or, as they put it, to eliminate ‘third party trailer lifting’.

Unravelling responsibility in the event of an accident is another whole mess this solution would avoid, especially if the risk is eliminated in the first place.

“I put my hand up,” says Peter. Other people did too. Rotorua Forest Haulage brought in a mechanical folding trailer system from Australia, but Peter was keen to work on his own solution. He has a long list of innovations to his credit over his 42 years in the industry and he was keen to take on the challenge.

The obvious solution was to keep the trailer on the ground and winch it onto the back of the truck but keeping it under

control and on the straight and narrow was not straightforward at all.

The dolly had to be locked, the brakes disengaged and the drawbar moved out of the way, while still needing the trailer brakes to actively work in the event of an equipment failure part way through loading.

The dream team Peter turned to long-time collaborator, Patchell Engineering, which has a talented engineering design team in-house that could turn his ideas into reality.

“I had a couple of ideas in mind. One was environmental, avoiding the risk of hydraulic oil spills. I also wanted to be able to retrofit this solution to any nine-axle logging unit. I wanted it to be universal so that if people got keen on the idea, it wasn’t going to break the bank to set this kind of system up.

“I’ve had a relationship with Patchell Engineering since 1983 so it was only natural that I would contact them to discuss it and see if they would help me

build it, and they said ‘absolutely’.”

Peter considers it kind of a dream team.

He had the concept and a lifetime of experience in the field while Patchell had the technical skills to develop the design and get the numbers right.

“So when you mix my enthusiasm, my coalface knowledge and creativity with their engineering and design skills then you are going to get a pretty good outcome. They invested a lot of their own money in it and so did I.” Patchell Group Sales and Marketing Manager, Glenn Heybourn, says working with operators like Peter and industryleading organisations such as the LTSC has been in the Patchell DNA for over 50 years.

“The team did a great job of listening to Peter then adding value through design and on-the-floor engineering to complete the project,” he says.

“They really enjoy the challenge of working on new concepts, especially on projects that make the industry safer for those working in it.”

Glenn says Patchell has focused on safety initiatives around trailer lifting for many years, developing many improvements that make the process safer and easier for the drivers. Their drawbar ramp designs, remote turning dollies, dolly locks and stops, and frontlocking pins all help drivers avoid having to get under or close to trailers during trailer lifting.

Another motivation for Peter was the fallout from a fatal accident at the Port of Auckland. Maritime New Zealand had taken over responsibility for safety at ports and had identified gantries as a risk.

“The first thing that happened was that the gantries at the port of Tauranga were removed and replaced with excavator loaders,” he says.

“I always say ‘think big picture’ and I believe as we go forward you might not even be allowed to load a trailer on the wharf using any form of lifting equipment.

“With my set up we don’t lift the trailer.

The trailer is winched up ramps and onto the truck. We developed a breakaway system so that, should the rope or winch equipment fail during loading, the emergency breakaway system will activate the brakes on those three axles. They will snap on immediately, so that trailer cannot roll away.

“That’s probably my proudest achievement. I knew I wanted it to utilise the standard airbrake system – no

hydraulics or electrics that could fail.”

In the event of an equipment failure, even total loss of air, the spring brakes will activate.

“The additional valves we applied are brake coded and certified,” says Peter.

He says it was the Patchell engineers who

came up with the way to make it work.

pressure comes off the tow rope, the rocker swings back, deactivating the release valve so the brakes are re-applied.

That all happens instantly, says Peter.

“That’s how modern trailers work. All I’ve done is used what’s there.”

But then…

“At that point I struck a speed bump.

When you’ve let the winch rope out, the first thing you need to do is stand your drawbar up,” he says.

Running the winch rope around a roller at the base of the drawbar will do that but you need the trailer’s brakes on for the winch to pull against. In order to do that you have to override that brake release system you’ve just installed. That called for an override on the override, so another valve was fitted.

“Then you give the draw bar the last 36 NZ LOGGER | May 2025

little push that latches it into the safety latch and then you can push the override button back in, so the trailer can roll and you can winch it aboard.”

Two ramps which swing in and stow over each other horizontally across the back of the truck, like folded arms, were a simple addition. The trailer is then pulled up onto the folded truck bolsters: “We put a fence along the bolster side arms and that guides the wheels along the top of the side arms into the wheel carriers.”

The winch is a 10-tonne Comeup winch designed and built in Singapore.

“It’s the first one in the country because electric winches don’t usually go to that kind of rating. That winch is wireless RF remote operated and it can be cable operated.”

The cable is actually Dyneema cord rather than steel, selected because it has

no stretch. If it snaps, it doesn’t whip back; it just falls to the ground.

Freedom Peter was keen to give drivers independence with this system which meant they wouldn’t be held up by third party equipment failures. Although safer, it is slower than getting an excavator to load a trailer.

“If there are three trucks getting their trailers loaded you will be leaving just after the third one,” Peter says. “And you

can easily have more than that waiting at a loading facility.

“Although the winching time is only three-and-a-half minutes, the whole process is between eight and 10 minutes.

But if the loader driver is on a break or there’s a mechanical fault, or he’s blown a hose it doesn’t take long before there are upwards of 20 trucks lined up down the port waiting to put their trailers up.

Remember it only takes three trucks and you are ahead.

“The other thing is, because this truck has 770 horsepower, on a good day you can pass three or four trucks going up the Kaimais anyway,” says Peter with a chuckle. It’s actually a 2024 Scania S770 eight-wheeler, towing a five-axle Patchell multi.

“If there’s any kind of mechanical breakdown in the loading system, you are totally independent of that. In the forest if a loader driver had lifted your tailer off and then has a hydraulic hose failure, you could be waiting for quite some time for the hose doctor to come and fix it.”

In this scenario the driver could load his own trailer again and go to another loading site.

Peter says the system is also a winner from an environmental point of view. It’s all electric and there’s no hydraulics involved which means no oil being sprayed around during a failure.

“It’s less capital investment and less environmental impact. And there’s one more safety feature: if you need to, you can also cut power to the winch with an independent cutout master switch.

“Once we got the process going, Manulife said we needed to do a risk analysis. Some people might think, ‘oh man here we go’, but I didn’t view it that way. It will highlight things that will save you in the long run.

You can sort it out as you are building it, meaning there’s less downtime.

“We did this three times and in the end we came up with what I feel confident is a very safe unit. The last thing we want to do is build something and create a risk we didn’t have before.

“Some of it is capital investment driven, a lot of it is Health and Safety driven, part of it is productivity driven and a lot of it is passion. I have a passion for innovation.”

The Safe-T-Loader is remarkably simple but a well-thought-out solution that is – as intended – easy to retrofit. And it adds less than a tonne to the tare weight – significantly less than a hydraulic folding rig solution.

A passion for innovation Innovation is baked into the Aztec Forestry Transport Developments story, which is why the word ‘developments’ features in its name.

Director of Aztec, Peter Phillips, became involved in trucking in 1978 and got into logging in1983. He first innovation was so fundamental to modern logging trailers, you’d imagine they were always like this but Peter was actually the first person, working with Patchell Engineering, to put shock absorbers into a logging trailer.

“That was the beginning of shock absorbers in logging trailers. This really increased the stability of the trailers, because now you had rebound control,” he says.

His next project was to redesign the radiator mounting system on Foden trucks because they kept breaking. Engineers came out from the UK, liked what they saw, and implemented his design in production. Although, says Peter, they went back to the original design some

time later because the broken radiator problem had disappeared. Guess what? It came back.

Peter was among the early operators of interchangeable logging units. He also worked with T.A.T.E.S. and manufacturer V.Orlandi to improve the design of its tow coupling system.

Back to Foden, and Peter initiated fitting air shocks beside the existing cab support system for additional ride comfort and rebound control.

Peter says he is also pretty proud of founding Aztec in 1998. He got together with two other truck operators, Ken Angus in Waihi Beach and Steve Segetin in Wellsford, so they could service both Carter Holt Harvey’s northern and central regions. They came up with the concept of circuit loading, effectively back-loading logs going in other directions: “We offered discounts for the backloads and they liked that.”

That initial fleet of four trucks has grown

to 98 just down from a peak of over 100. The majority are contracted owner operators, some of them drivers who Aztec have helped into their own trucks. Aztec has always been keen to apply innovations that improve safety or reliability.

Peter cites a tyre pressure monitoring system on twin steer trucks. He says if you get a slow puncture on a second steer tyre you often won’t feel it. This can lead to the tyre destroying itself, the mudguard and possibly the rim.

The fleet hosts a range of other technologies such as in-cab fatigue and distraction management camera systems, an in-cab digital despatch system, GPS, speed management, and it uses a truck audit system devised by Peter. Trucks bearing audit pass labels give customers confidence they are in top condition.

“I like innovation and if something ain’t right I want to make it right,” Peter says.

“If you get like-minded people working with you, then you can fix anything.”

That’s another plus of the Safe-T-Loader system. Space can be tight on some log landings, and the Safe-T-Loader trailer can easily be disconnected, as normal, and placed to one side while the truck is being loaded.

The big question is whether the concept will be adopted by the log transport industry. It met the Manulife brief and it satisfies Peter’s own preference for systems that make his operation more reliable. Peter’s philosophy, one that has made Aztec one of the most respected names in the forest, is to operate quality gear and systems that can be relied upon to perform and meet targets.

The Safe-T-Loader does take a bit longer to load, and that will be a critical factor for some, but the consequences of the kind of

accident it was designed to avoid are so much more devastating than a few minutes extra in loading, even if there’s no waiting involved.

In the meantime, the rig is garnering a lot of curiosity. Peter demonstrated the SafeT-Loader recently at the Autorama show in Morrinsville.

It drew quite a few comments from people saying they had never seen that before. “You are right about that,” Peter told them. “It’s the very first one like this, built on a standard logging unit.”

Peter isn’t expecting to win other operators over right away. He says, as usual, they will wait a while to see how it goes. Maybe he will be the only one to operate one for quite a while but then, Peter takes the long-term view. And if

there’s a chance to innovate, he’ll be there.

Glenn adds that this unit is also fitted with auto tensioning winches and a new concept of throw-over chain support rods.

They allow the chains to be placed over the load by the digger operator, removing the need for the driver to throw chains.

“Further ongoing development of the Safe-T-Loader unit concept will allow for unloading of the trailer as well as loading,” Glenn says. It will remove the need for this – albeit less risky – lifting operation.

“We are really proud to be part of an industry that is always putting safety for its people at the front of its focus.

Working on projects such as this with Peter and with all our clients is what makes this industry such a great one to be involved in.” NZL

EN Gisborne students this year became the first graduates of the Tūranga Ararau nationally recognised Whakatiputanga Ngahere New Zealand Diploma in Forest Management Level 6.

With the planned closure of the Toi Ohomai Forest Management diploma next year, Tūranga Ararau will be the only institution in New Zealand delivering the qualification, combining forestry science, health and safety, and practical fieldwork and is currently in discussions with iwi, industry and other interested parties to extend provision.

The graduation, held at Whakatō Marae, celebrated two years of hard work from the

students and marked a devoted journey taking more than two years for Tūranga Ararau to get NZQA accreditation for the Diploma.

Tūranga Ararau Ruapani Forestry Manager, Henry Mulligan says his vision has always been to give more people the opportunity to advance themselves.

Graduates included Seth Andreasen, Tina Harrison, Robert Harrison, John Henry, Stan Hovell, Amohau Maxwell, Awhina Paul, Jack Truelock, Jack Willock and Mamie West.

The fit for purpose Forestry Diploma meant every single graduate was either already employed, had started their own business or is continuing with further education.

Real-world challenges Graduate and top student, Jack Willock, was awarded Te Whata Ruru, a Ruapani taonga carved by Whare Gilbert in recognition of the contribution the late John Ruru MNZM made to the Tūranga Ararau Forestry programmes, which included a scholarship sponsored by his whānau.

Jack was sponsored by Juken New Zealand through his Diploma and is now in full-time employment with them. Jack Truelock was awarded the top research project prize for his presentation on chemical thinning Reflecting on the two years since he started the Diploma, he says he still feels passionate about the chance he’d been given.

He started in 2023 at Canterbury University before realising it wasn’t the right path for him, then came across the Forestry Management Diploma at Tūranga Ararau which aligned with his values and goals.

He says “diverse is an understatement” about the group he graduated beside because they spanned ages, backgrounds and cultures.

“This diploma has set all of us up for realworld challenges, and we’ve learned values that will contribute in a meaningful way to the forestry industry here,” he says.

He credits programme facilitator, Henry Mulligan, with getting them all through two years of hard work, dedication and learning to graduation day.

The hands-on diploma is supported by the Gisborne forestry industry. Speaking at the graduation, Regional Manager for Forest Enterprises and Eastland Wood Council Deputy Chair, Warren Rance, challenged himself and others in the industry to contribute more to the Tūranga Ararau Forestry Diploma.

He told the graduates that one of their jobs as a forester was to protect the soil on the land for as long as possible.

His strong environmental focus has spanned 30 years in the industry including

managing erosion control projects in other countries. He told the graduates that one of the benefits of forestry was care of the land and keeping the soil on the hills.

“It’s an opportunity for you to have a big impact in this industry and you can have an impact from day one here.

“If we get this right, forestry can continue to contribute to the economy, community and environment and that’s something I’m passionate about – looking after our soils.”

The vision at Tūranga Ararau has always been to get people employed and address the discrepancy between entry level roles and progressing to management roles, says Henry, who referenced a 1990s research project undertaken by Tūranga Ararau that shows that although Māori made up 80% of the forestry labour force they were concentrated in entry level roles and a decision was made to see this percentage reflected at higher level management roles and respond to increased iwi ownership in the forestry industry.

John Ruru was represented by his wife Win at the graduation who presented his taonga.

She says it is good to see more women coming into the forestry industry, and that John always spoke highly of women foresters because they always go into the detail, “all the little things got done”.

Graduate and mum of four, Tina Harrison, 35, agrees. She has more than 10 years’ experience driving log trucks and is planning an environmental law degree next.

Graduate John Henry, 43, says his advice to anyone thinking about doing this Forestry Diploma is to “get out of your comfort zone and get into it”.

Tūranga Ararau has delivered the first year of the diploma since 1996 through an arrangement with what was Waiariki Institute of Technology.

Over the years they have had 33 graduates, now working at management levels in the industry. Many first-year graduates also advanced in the forestry industry as contractors and technicians.

In 2018, after carrying the cost of the programme since 2012 it was placed in recess while alternative opportunities were sought, leading to Tūranga Ararau developing its own programme. NZL

Increasing productivity and striking the right trade relationships key for New Zealand business New Zealand economist, Cameron Bagrie (pictured bottom left), provided a straight-shooting analysis of New Zealand’s economy and broader global trends to FICA Members and Sponsors at the FICA Looking Ahead Workshop held in Taupo on 4 April.

Timed in the same week that President Donald Trump announced a raft of tariffs for countries around the globe trading with the United States, the session was met with uncertainty and speculation on what may be coming.

Mr Bagrie touched on New Zealand’s log market reliance on China, recent NZ Government trade discussions with India and the domestic construction downturn and the reduction in demand for housing.

His advice to businesses was that increasing business productivity is the key for New Zealand businesses to move ahead in the changing economic landscape.

The move to mechanisation within the industry was a key discussion point, and the audience acknowledged the high costs of mechanisation. Mr Bagrie commented on the reluctance of New Zealand banks to back business with favourable lending, preferring to chase personal lending against lower-risk housing.

In summing up, Mr Bagrie said, “What’s coming out of the IMF, OECD on what tariffs could do to the economy is not great, but I suspect there might be a little bit of over-reach here and we’re going to see a bit of back-peddling here in the next two to three months, because if you’re a country that got slapped by those tariffs, you’re going to be calling up the United States pretty damn quickly and trying to do a deal… so we hope that things settle down pretty quickly.

“The big risk for New Zealand is how this flows into Asia, because Asia took the biggest battering out there… If you look at Indonesia, China, they got slapped with some pretty big numbers. Why? Because their trade surpluses are pretty high… it’s just bullsh*t maths.

Navigating the volatility of fuel pricing was another key topic, with FICA sponsor Waitomo Fuel offering a clear breakdown of market fluctuations and proactive cost-saving strategies for businesses. One tip Waitomo encouraged FICA members to think about was purchasing their own fuel tanks, which can be a cost saving for some business owners depending on their scale/fuel consumption.

Additionally, the entry-level AI session hosted by Mosaic Partners introduced attendees to practical applications of AI and ChatGPT, emphasising how automation and AI-driven decision-making can enhance business efficiency.

Mosaic presenters stressed the importance of prompting Chat GPT with the right background information and encouraged attendees to think of AI as “the world’s smartest assistant” – it learns as it goes, so the more you tell it, the more useful it can be with its responses. Examples attendees workshopped in an exercise included to create job ads in a few seconds, draft and structure tender responses and complete machine costings/feasibility and mechanical diagnostics of equipment.

Small-Scale Forestry Initiative

FICA and the Forest Owners Association (FOA) are leading a joint initiative to strengthen safety and representation in small-scale forestry.

Through this joint effort, FICA and FOA are trying to ensure that small forest owners have a platform to discuss their needs. Meeting attendees collectively concluded that representation from this sector on the FISC Committee would be a vital step forward. To advance this, Joe Akari (CEO of FISC) will follow up to explore next steps, with further communications to come.

Key stakeholders recently met (jointly organised by FICA and the FOA), to address health and safety challenges faced by small forest and woodlot owners.

This collaborative initiative reinforced the understanding that small forestry operations have unique risks and operational realities that need greater recognition within the Forest Industry Safety Council (FISC).

FIRST TIGERCAT LS857 SHOVEL LOGGER IN NZ

ELTEC/WOODSMAN COMBO

Rodney McIndoe, owner of McIndoe Logging, has taken delivery of the first Tigercat LS857 shovel logger in New Zealand. The new model LS857 is fitted with a Duxson FX142 felling head. First impressions are, “it’s got heaps of lift and is really stable”. It also comes with extra tilt ability compared to the previous model, the LS855E. Machine sold and supported by AB Equipment and Tigercat.

A brand new Eltec FHL277 B Series leveller has been delivered into Tarawera Forest. Fitted with a Woodsman Pro DFH1350 felling head, this machine will be operating for multiple crews. Machine sold and serviced by Shaw’s.

JOHN DEERE FOR LEALAND LOGGING Lealand Logging, crew 040 has taken delivery of a new 948LII John Deere skidder. Operator, Rob, is well familiar with the John Deere 948L, this being the second new machine that he has taken on. There have been a few subtle changes and Rob says he found it easy to adjust to the new controls. Machine sold and supported by Brandt, Rotorua.

NEW KOMATSU FOR FARRELL LOGGING Mark and Vicki Farrell from Southland have taken delivery of their first Komatsu 895HD. This machine has moved from 262kn to 302kn.
