THERE HAVE BEEN TWO IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS IN RECENT WEEKS, and both could have long lasting impacts on New Zealand’s Forestry Industry.

Firstly, last month saw the release of the Climate Change Commission’s National Climate Change Risk Assessment 2026. The report received significant national attention.

It has been welcomed by the New Zealand Institute of Forestry for its highlighting of the risks posed to the forestry industry by climate change, with those risks being recognised as among the most significant.

It states that the risks are already great and that there is a need to accelerate adaptation planning and action in forestry to increase resilience.

The report calls for improved long-term planning to address the risks, for better research and stronger co-ordination between central government, local government, iwi, researchers and the forestry sector.

There is some hope, and we share that hope, that the report will be a catalyst for meaningful action.

It may have slipped under the radar by comparison, but changes to the National Environmental Standards for Commercial Forestry are about to come into force as part of wider Resource Management Act reforms.

The New Zealand Forest Owners Association has recognised the changes as being an important step towards a more nationally consistent and riskbased framework for managing forestry activities.

Husband’s death preventable says truck driver’s widow THE WIDOW OF A LOGGING TRUCK DRIVER KILLED IN 2023 HAS made an emotional plea for worker safety.

Christine Stevens told Thames District Court, in a victim impact statement: “My plea is simple: let our loved ones come home from work safely.”

Greg Stevens, 59, died when his fully loaded logging truck and trailer rolled while negotiating a treacherous bend on a private forestry road in May 2023. The road had no warning signs, road markers or berms, and its sharp corner was well outside any recommended specifications for the heavy vehicle he was driving.

Two more businesses have now been held to account for the forestry road failures.

The Thames District Court found the corner’s turning diameter was 7.5m less than the minimum standard for the truck configuration.

Wet surfaces, mud-caked tyres, darkness and a steep downhill approach made the bend even more dangerous.

The forest owner, Specialty Timbers (1987) Ltd, and the transport contractor, Trevor Masters Ltd, were sentenced for their work health and safety failures in a reserved decision. Reparations of $171,258 were ordered, alongside a combined fine of $26,250.

Judge Tompkins found each party assumed someone else was ensuring the road was safe, so nobody took responsibility.

“Greg’s death was preventable, and if those companies had done what they should have done, my Greg would still be with me today,” Mrs Stevens told the Thames District Court in her statement.

“Greg’s death has left both mine, and the lives of our families, in limbo. Only someone who has experienced a loss like this in such tragic and horrible circumstances will ever understand.”

“It is my hope that Greg’s death will serve as a reminder to prioritise safety in the workplace, so no other family has to endure this trauma.”

Safe transporting of logs to the forest boundary is part of WorkSafe New Zealand’s recently released approved code of practice for forestry and harvesting operations.

“No log load is worth a life,” said WorkSafe’s Northern Regional Manager, Brad Duggan. “Forestry operators must understand that managing forestry roads isn’t optional. If you’re moving heavy vehicles through difficult terrain, you need proper risk assessment, proper consultation and proper controls. If you’re not 4 NZ LOGGER | June 2026

sure your roads are up to standard, stop and check before the next truck goes out.”

Forestry is a priority for WorkSafe as its fatality rate is about 20 times higher than the average for all sectors.

“Our role is to influence businesses and workers to meet their responsibilities to keep people healthy and safe. When they do not, we take action,” said Mr Duggan.

The forest managers, Forest360 Ltd, have separately entered into an enforceable undertaking. This is a binding agreement with WorkSafe to invest over $400,000 in a range of safety actions in response to the death. NZL

Report highlights risks to forests LAST MONTH SAW THE RELEASE OF THE CLIMATE CHANGE Commission’s National Climate Change Risk Assessment 2026.

It painted a grim picture of the potential risks from climate change to New Zealand’s economy, society, environment and ecology.

The report assesses the nature of the risks, their severity, and the need for co-ordinated actions to respond to them. This will help inform the government’s next National Adaptation Plan, due in 2028.

Among the areas highlighted as being at risk are the sectors whose economic productivity is directly linked to the natural environment – including forestry.

The report’s executive summary, in its section on risks to forestry, states: “This risk deals with how climate change will affect the country’s managed and production forests, and how the sector can better prepare for these impacts, including extreme weather, drought and wildfire, and new pests and disease.

“Forestry delivers a suite of benefits to the country: wood products, export earnings and removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The sector is growing rapidly in both value and area, with the area in managed and production forests expected to nearly double over the next 50 years. It is also central to the country’s action to reach net zero emissions.

“Damage to these forests reduces not only their capacity to absorb carbon dioxide and the sector’s economic contribution, but also exposes waterways and downstream communities to devastating sediment and debris flows.

“This is one of the most significant risks, because the risks to forestry from climate change are already great, and there is a need to accelerate adaptation planning and action in forestry to increase resilience. Most forests planted now will not reach harvest age for more than 20 years – meaning they will grow under changing environmental conditions and intensifying extreme events. Acting now will help avoid locking in future outcomes that increase the risks to forestry.”

The New Zealand Institute of Forestry (NZIF) has welcomed the release of the risk assessment, particularly the recognition of forestry as one of New Zealand’s most significant climate related risks.

NZIF President, James Treadwell, said the report correctly recognises forests are already facing increasing pressure from climate change, including more severe storms, wildfire risk, drought, changing rainfall patterns and increasing pest and disease threats.

“Forests are long term assets. Decisions made today will influence how resilient our landscapes and communities are for decades to come,” he said.

“For commercial forestry, this includes species choice, establishment, management and harvest planning, but the longterm decision framework applies even more to the management of the conservation estate under changing conditions and the preservation of our native taonga.

“The report rightly highlights the need for stronger adaptation planning across the forestry sector.”

NZIF represents professional foresters working across all forest types in New Zealand, including indigenous forests, production forests, farm forestry, permanent forests, protection forests and urban forestry.

Mr Treadwell said forests play a critical role in New Zealand’s future, not only through carbon storage, but also through erosion control, biodiversity protection, water management, renewable materials, regional employment and landscape resilience.

“It is important the national discussion does not frame forestry solely as a risk. Well planned and professionally managed forests are also a major part of New Zealand’s response to climate change.”

NZIF supports the Commission’s call for improved long term planning, better research and stronger co-ordination between central government, local government, iwi, researchers and the forestry sector.

The Institute believes the next National Adaptation Plan should include development of a national forestry adaptation programme focused on: • improving forest resilience to climate change, • strengthening wildfire and biosecurity preparedness, • supporting research into species suitability and genetics, • improving land use planning for erosion prone land, • integrating climate resilience into ETS and carbon forestry settings, • recognising the role of professional forestry expertise in adaptation planning.

Mr Treadwell said adaptation policy must reflect the diversity of New Zealand forestry.

“A one size fits all approach will not work. Different forest types, regions and ownership structures face different risks and opportunities.

“The forestry sector is ready to work constructively with government and communities to help build more resilient landscapes and a more climate prepared New Zealand.” NZL June 2026 | NZ LOGGER 5

Sector innovation and connection at Fieldays Forestry Hub THE FORESTRY HUB WILL ONCE again be a feature of Fieldays in 2026.

It is the fifth consecutive year that forest growers and sector organisations will have come together to connect with the public, share knowledge and tell the story of modern forestry. This year, the Hub will highlight the roles forestry and wood processing play in New Zealand’s economy, alongside the sector’s ongoing focus on innovation, workforce development and environmental management.

“The Fieldays Forestry Hub is an important part of Fieldays, reflecting our role in showcasing the full depth of New Zealand’s primary industries. It highlights how forestry and wood processing sit alongside agriculture as a vital contributor to the country’s economy, innovation and sustainable land use,” says Fieldays Programme Manager, Steve Chappell.

Visitors to the Forestry Hub can expect a dynamic mix of educational sessions and interactive exhibits. These will cover key topics including forest growing, climate change, innovative wood products, engineered timber solutions for mid-rise construction, emerging bioenergy opportunities, biosecurity and biodiversity.

The Hub will also provide insights into the wide range of career pathways across the forestry and wood processing sectors, highlighting future workforce opportunities.

A popular feature returning this year is the virtual reality forestry simulator, offering participants the chance to step into the operator’s seat of modern forestry machinery. Designed with job seekers and students in mind, the immersive experience provides practical insight into today’s forestry operations and the advanced technology

driving the sector.

Families and young people will find plenty to explore, with hands-on activities such as tree identification challenges, trying on personal protective equipment, and displays showcasing innovative uses of wood — including surfboards made from timber. These interactive experiences aim to help people build an understanding of forestry practices while reinforcing the importance of safety and wellbeing.

Throughout the event, a wide range of sector representatives will be on hand to share their expertise and answer questions. This includes forest growers, wood processors, scientists, business leaders, volunteer organisations, membership and research bodies, and government agencies working across the forestry and wood processing landscape.

The Growing Native Forests Champions Awards will be presented, to recognise individuals and groups leading efforts to establish native forests, share knowledge and support biodiversity and regenerative forestry outcomes.

MPI Director Forestry Engagement and Advice, Ray Hook, says the annual event highlights the skill, pride and professionalism of the people within the sector.

“Fieldays offers us the chance to make the sector more visible, approachable and human, and to answer the public’s questions about forestry and wood processing,” he says.

Wood Processing and Manufacturers Association Chief Executive Mark Ross says Fieldays highlights the value derived from New Zealand’s sustainably managed forests.

“By standing alongside farmers and industry leaders we emphasise the role wood products play in supporting on-farm

productivity and innovation. New Zealand timber remains a preferred building material in rural communities — valued for its flexibility, resilience, cost-effectiveness and availability.”

New Zealand Forest Owners Association Chief Executive, Dr Elizabeth Heeg, says forestry plays a critical role in New Zealand’s economy and regional communities, supporting jobs, investment and the supply of renewable, low-carbon building materials.

“Fieldays is about showing the scale and reality of modern forestry – a sector that is highly skilled, increasingly technology-driven and central to how New Zealand produces and uses wood-based products,” she says.

“It also reflects the diversity of forestry ownership across Aotearoa, including Māori landowners, who hold a significant share of forestry land and bring intergenerational perspectives on land use and long-term stewardship of whenua, as well as farm foresters who integrate trees into wider farming systems and rural economies.”

Carbon Forestry 2026: A sector in transition INNOVATEK HAS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED THE programme for Carbon Forestry 2026.

Taking place in Rotorua on 4 and 5 August, the conference arrives at a critical juncture as the industry shifts its focus towards the emerging era of Natural Capital.

Leading the charge on fuel-efficient operations IN WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE A WORLD FIRST, A MAJOR STEP forward in reducing emissions and future-proofing operations has been made at Kaingaroa Tipu’s Kaingaroa Processing Plant (KPP).

A new high capacity charger was recently commissioned and switched on, to support Rotorua Forest Haulage’s (RFH) growing electric fleet.

The 400kW charger has been installed to service a fully-electric loader and a newly-introduced electric logging truck, bought

by RFH. The machines are replacing traditional diesel-powered equivalents, and marking an important shift in how work is done across the supply chain.

The set-up combines a high-capacity charger with two vehicles operating in a live forestry-related environment.

General Manager for Sustainability, Colin Maunder, says the project is a practical step towards Kaingaroa Tipu’s long-term goal of eliminating fossil fuels from its operations.

“This reflects how, as a business, we are being more climate positive in our approach to the work we do, but more simply, it’s also about learning, testing what works, building capability and setting ourselves up for the future.”

Growing infrastructure While the charger itself is a key feature, the project has involved much more behind the scenes.

Kaingaroa Tipu has invested more than $1 million into the installation, including civil works, concreting and upgrading 8 NZ LOGGER | June 2026

electrical infrastructure to support the system.

The charger can service two machines at once, splitting its output as needed. To ensure reliability in KPP’s demanding environment, much of the equipment has been housed within a protective container to shield it from dust and temperature extremes.

“This isn’t just plugging in a charger,” Mr Maunder says, “it’s building the infrastructure to support a different way of operating.”

Supporting a growing electric fleet RFH’s electric loader has already been operating at KPP for close to a year, while the electric logging truck is a more recent addition to its fleet. RFH received support from the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority to adopt both vehicles.

Early indications are promising. The loader can be topped up during scheduled breaks and continue running through the day, while the truck uses short charging intervals to maintain its operating range. It also benefits from regenerative braking, capturing energy when travelling downhill.

Together, the machines are helping to reduce reliance on diesel, which has traditionally powered forestry operations.

KPP is already a highly electrified site, and this latest development strengthens that position. KPP site manager, Phil Loest, says the charger fits with KPP’s site philosophy of using locally generated electricity for processing wherever it can.

Mr Maunder adds that it is easy to overlook just how significant this is.

“If we were processing our stem logs in the forest, we’d typically rely on multiple diesel machines to process them. At KPP, that work is already electrified,” he says. “That’s a big efficiency gain, and now we’re extending that electrification further into the supply chain.”

Electrified pathway In some cases, logs processed at KPP are also handled by an electric loader at PermaPine after they arrive on site at Reporoa, creating an increasingly electrified pathway from processing through to delivery. This loader operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and has clocked up 3000 operational hours over eight months.

A second electric loader is due to be delivered to PermaPine this month as part of efforts to further reduce operating costs and minimise the site’s environmental footprint. Charging infrastructure will keep the loaders and RFH’s electric truck powered up.

The collective efforts have been driven in partnership with RFH, which has taken a leading role by investing in electric heavy transport.

RFH’s Kaingaroa Site Manager, Jay McLean, says RFH is always keen to try something new, with the loader already proving its value over the past year at KPP. “Having the charger here means we can keep it topped up all day. It can carry out the work of any other loader here in the yard. As a bonus, it’s comfortable to drive, quiet and operatorfriendly.”

“The electric truck is very new to the fleet and it’s exciting to see it operating, especially now with diesel prices the way they are.”

Climate action and energy security While reducing emissions is a key driver, Mr Maunder says the benefits go beyond climate considerations.

“With what we’re seeing globally, including volatility in fuel supply and pricing, this is also about energy security,” he says.

“Over time, fossil fuels will become harder to access and more expensive. Investing in electrification now helps future-proof our operations and reduces that risk.”

There are also benefits for operators. Electric machines are quieter, smoother and produce less vibration than their diesel counterparts, making them more comfortable to operate.

“That has real advantages from a health and safety perspective,” Mr Maunder says. “It’s a better environment for people.”

The charger project is one piece of a wider programme of work underway at KPP, as the site continues to modernise with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

“This isn’t a single solution,” Mr Maunder says. “It’s part of a broader transition. We’re taking practical steps, learning as we go and building momentum.”

With the charger now operational, KPP is playing a key role in shaping what a lower-emissions forestry supply chain could look like, both now and into the future. NZL

Weight reduction from track design AN INNOVATIVE TRACK, DESIGNED TO reduce downtime and fuel consumption, has made its way to New Zealand.

After making an impact at FinnMetko 2024, and a successful pilot project, TerraX is set to give forestry operators a powerful new tool to improve efficiency.

As machines in the forestry industry get bigger and more powerful, the need for high quality, reliable tracks becomes increasingly important.

However, heavier machines usually mean heavier tracks, which can cause issues when it comes to load limits and fuel consumption.

TerraX is a great choice for these machines, as well as being suitable for smaller machines.

Developed by Clark Tracks, TerraX replaces the Terra95 track, offering improved performance and reduced weight.

TerraX falls into the multi-terrain category of tracks, making it the perfect choice for many applications. And while it delivers the equivalent bending resistance of the Terra95 track, it weighs 30% less. This reduction in weight is a huge win for efficiency, operational costs and the environment.

TerraX is also smarter. On a typical eightwheel machine, with 750/55-26.5 tyres that use

tracks on the front and rear, TerraX can reduce weight by 950kg per set in comparison with Terra95. With less weight to carry machines run more efficiently. This is the type of innovation that helps forestry professionals get more done.

Another feature of TerraX is the Adjustable Haggis Link (AHL). This is a new joining link that makes tensioning tracks faster with a more customised fit.

With the AHL, operators can quickly adjust track tension. The AHL teeth offer a wide range of tension options, allowing tracks to be fitted according to a machine’s needs.

This small change makes a big difference when it comes to optimising performance and reducing downtime. Using TerraX means overtightening tracks are a thing of the past.

New environmental standards change welcomed THE NEW ZEALAND FOREST OWNERS Association (NZFOA) has welcomed changes to the National Environmental Standards for Commercial Forestry (NESCF).

The association has described the changes as an important step toward a more nationally consistent and risk-based framework for managing forestry activities across New Zealand.

NZFOA Chief Executive, Dr Elizabeth Heeg, says the changes, due to come into effect on 4 June as part of the wider Resource Management Act (RMA) reforms, better align regulatory oversight with the site-specific risks associated with New Zealand’s diverse forestry landscapes.

“Forestry operates across highly variable terrain and environmental conditions,” she says. “Regulation needs to reflect those differences, rather than assume every site carries the same level of risk.

framework remains of critical importance to forest owners, but not at the expense of applying identical rules regardless of landscape, erosion profile or catchment sensitivity.

“Durable environmental outcomes require regulation that is consistently applied and reflects actual environmental risk across different forestry environments.

“A forest in rolling hill country, for example, presents different risks to steep land above a sensitive catchment. The updated NES-CF is better equipped to recognise those differences and risks.”

Dr Heeg says the NES-CF changes are emblematic of an evidence-based approach to environmental management, particularly on steep and erosion-prone land.

Northland Forestry Awards on the horizon THE COUNTDOWN IS ON FOR THE HIGHLY anticipated Northland Forestry Awards, with nominations for all award categories officially opening on 2 June.

Celebrating excellence, innovation, leadership and safety across the forestry and wood processing sector, this biennial event will once again bring together contractors, crews, companies, suppliers and industry leaders from across Tai Tokerau and New Zealand.

The 2026 Northland Forestry Awards will take place on Friday 18 September at McKay Stadium, Whangārei, and are expected to attract hundreds of forestry professionals 10 NZ LOGGER | June 2026

and supporters from around the region.

This will be the 10th anniversary of the Awards, recognising the people and businesses driving one of Northland’s most important industries forward — from harvesting and silviculture, to transport, innovation, environmental stewardship, health and safety, and emerging talent.

Northland Wood Council Chair, Will Steward, says the awards continue to play a critical role in highlighting the strength and professionalism of the sector.

“The Northland Forestry Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the outstanding people who work across our industry every

day. Forestry remains a cornerstone of the Northland economy, and these Awards recognise the skill, commitment and innovation that exist throughout the sector,” he says. “We encourage businesses, crews and individuals from across the industry to put forward nominations and be part of what promises to be another exceptional event.”

Major award categories include the Qube Innovation of the Year, Matariki Forests Forestry Family of the Year, Outstanding Environmental Excellence, Health and Safety Excellence, the prestigious Good Deed Award, honouring individuals in the

without improving environmental outcomes,” she says. “The latest changes strengthen the ability to focus regulatory requirements where environmental risk is higher, while allowing decisions to better reflect site-specific conditions.

This is a more practical and targeted approach to managing environmental risk.”

The reform will also provide more certainty for forest owners, contractors, councils and communities.

“Forestry is planned over years – often decades. Decisions about planting, roading, harvesting and replanting rely on regulation that is clear, grounded in evidence and workable in practice.

Greater national consistency will provide more certainty around how forestry activities and environmental risks are managed across the motu.”

The Association says the introduction of a Slash Mobilisation Risk Assessment framework is a practical example of a more risk-based approach being applied in practice. It recognises assessments developed and relied on, by the sector and by councils.

“Post-Cyclone Gabrielle, the sector has been adapting management practices for higher-risk environments, particularly around slash management, erosion risk, harvest planning and decision-making on more complex sites,” says Dr Heeg.

“The proposed framework reflects

ongoing work to continually improve how harvest residue risk is identified and managed across different environments and terrain types.

“It enables higher-risk sites to be identified more consistently, so management efforts can be focused where they are most needed, while still allowing for different approaches depending on the nature of the land and the level of environmental risk involved.”

Dr Heeg says it is important that forestry regulation has scope to evolve as science, operational experience and changing climate conditions shape what best practice looks like in the field.

“Forestry needs a system that supports long-term investment, protects the environment and keeps people safe, while allowing practices to continue improving over time,” she says. “That is particularly important in higherrisk environments, where operational decisions can involve steep terrain and complex conditions, and where managing the safety of people working on the ground is integral to how work is planned and carried out.

“Forest owners support regulation that can adapt as science, data and operational experience evolve. But as always, the detail of how these changes are implemented will be critical to whether they achieve their intent in practice.” NZL

New Chair of Forest Industry Safety Council The Forest Industry Safety Council’s newly appointed Chair, Darrin Collett.

THE FOREST INDUSTRY SAFETY COUNCIL (FISC) has appointed Darrin Collett as its new Chair, bringing more than 35 years of handson experience across New Zealand’s forestry sector to the role.

Mr Collett began his career in logging crews in the late 1980s, ending up establishing and running his own forestry company, Woodbank Trading, for more than 20 years. His experience spans corporate and small-scale forestry, as well as international work as a tropical forestry consultant.

He has also contributed to a range of industry and community initiatives, including the Northland Health and Safety Working Group, and environmental projects. He has been an active member of organisations such as the New Zealand Farm Forestry Association and the New Zealand Institute of Forestry.

Now semi-retired, Mr Collett says his new role offers a timely opportunity to give back to an industry to which he remains deeply committed.

“I’ve been involved in several forestry sectors, which brings a holistic approach to my chairmanship role and an understanding of the different complexities and potential viewpoints on the way forward,” he says.

“I’m excited to get started, and put that experience to work for the industry.”

FISC Chief Executive, Joe Akari, says Mr Collett’s breadth of experience will be of benefit to the Council’s work.

“Health and safety in forestry has come a long way over the past few decades, and Darrin has witnessed much of that change first hand. His understanding of what it’s like on the ground, along with his experience from the decision-making table across different parts of the industry, will be invaluable.”

“We’re looking forward to having him on board.”

Mr Collett started the role on 20 May, but will act as an observer for his first FISC Council meeting. He takes over from Acting Chair, Grant Dodson. Previous Chair Simon O’Grady stepped down in September 2025.

TODAY WE ARE IN SOUTHLAND, TESTING THE CDL LOG GRAPPLE made by 3D Industrial Engineering in Rotorua. It’s a tough test, the macrocarpa logs are big, old and heavy, but the grapple shines through as a solid bit of New Zealand-made kit. The 3D Industrial Engineering story is a classic one of starting out with humble beginnings in a shed south of Rotorua and now having 15 staff making equipment for forestry operations nationwide. But more about that later.

We venture about as far south as you can go, to Invercargill, to test this grapple at Neville Stirling Excavating, and find it hard at work on a macrocarpa windblown salvage operation, connected to a tidy Caterpillar Next Gen 320.

The two-man operation has just come from a nearby woodlot as they answered the call to clean up several farms affected by recent serious wind storms in the area. While much of the macrocarpa blown down is being milled, this particular lot of logs is being stockpiled for the land owner’s personal firewood stash. It must get very cold down here, because it’s a huge pile, probably over 100 tonnes, but that will store well for a few years’ supply.

When really big, topped shelter belt macrocarpa trees blow down, you need tough gear, and if it can pull some wizard tricks, then even better. As many will know, macrocarpa shelterbelts differ greatly from plantation

pine, in some cases to the point that it’s just a clean-up operation of mangled limbs and twisted trunks, dismantling the debris and piling it high, so that notorious Southland wind can dry it out for a good bonfire later in the year. That’s where this fixed, rotating, tilting grapple comes into its own. While CDL make a universal hanger for regular dangle grapples for logging operations, this one is a few steps further along, and gives the kind of control you crave when you want to do storm clean-up quickly, safely and efficiently.

The Southland weather never fails to disappoint as far as excitement goes. On a previous visit, we had a blizzard and gale force winds almost blowing the porch off the house we stayed at. This time it’s just a six-hour thunderstorm overnight, followed by sleet and below zero wind chill. The beauty of all the rain, combined with the very fertile soils, is obviously great tree growth.

A father and son operation Neville Stirling started out in ag work with ‘dozers in 1973, and bought a digger from his uncle in 1979.

“That was an O and K excavator, which was red and white. There weren’t a lot of diggers around then, except maybe a few bigger Cat machines which were in the forestry. And I’ve just worked by myself as a contractor, mostly in ag earthmoving, since then,” he says.

“I was actually going to retire, as things were getting too busy, but (Neville’s son) Anthony stepped in and said he would like to buy the business, so we sorted a plan for that to happen, and it is working out well.”

The company owns a Caterpillar 312D, 320 and 313 Next Gen which is fitted with a laser, and spends most of its time on drainage.

Over the years, Neville has owned 14 (12 or 13 tonne) excavators and has put them to good use, mostly in farm drainage. He bought one of the first laser systems in New Zealand in 1985 which, back then, was a $30k gadget. He measures the fall, and divides it by

distance, and that gives him the depth each scoop needs to be as he moves along the drain, which saves a lot of time and guess work for farmers on the wide, flat plains of Southland.

“It’s only in the last few years that we have got more into trees, as Anthony has an interest in it. The big October storm was good for us – gave us a lot of work,” Neville says.

“As that work took off, we spoke to Brett (McIntyre at 2 Tyre Tracks and Hire – the Lower South Island CDL dealer) about buying a used grapple and he said could (sell us one), but refused, saying

‘you really should look at new and CDL is the one to get’. We are very pleased with it. I have used it a few times, but young Anthony is pretty keen on it and the 320, so I don’t get inside it very much.”

Regular operator, Anthony, was Operations Manager for an ag and earthworks company when his dad said he wanted to retire, and that turned fairly quickly into a succession planning exercise that is moving along smoothly.

“I have bought into the company, and continue to do so as I can afford to. It works out well for dad, as he can ease out of the job slowly, as well as me, and I hope eventually my kids will be able to have a similar chance at this, but first they do need to go out into the world and get some experience of how other businesses do things, and get some experience to add further value to the business.”

Extra work and more variety As we approach the Cat 320 with the CDL grapple, Anthony says the CDL has brought in a lot of extra work for them.

“I only had the rake for this machine at first, for tree clean-up, which was quite effective, but we couldn’t load a log truck with it, so now we have the ability to load log trucks and sell logs for farmers if they don’t want them, plus we can stack the logs they do want quicker and more tidily for them. We made a friend of (Southland based log buyer and forest company) Log Marketing, and we also have a firewood merchant who takes anything wooden we can get on a truck.”

Anthony has championed the diversification into woodlots and tree work, and it brings a healthy variety to the business, but is also a bit of a learning curve on the health and safety side of things.

“We’ve had the engineers give the 320 a

proper fit out so we can comply with H and S standards for loading log trucks, as well as machine-assisted manual felling and extraction, which is shovelling to the skid site for processing.

We approached Log Marketing for advice on what they needed for export quality logs, and H and S, and went from there. We have a very good chainsaw operator that contracts to us when required, and this allows us to fill our niche in woodlots in the Southland area.

“The CDL is a good grapple. Yesterday we had our chainsaw operator here and I was able to work with him as he cut a mangled, heavy leaning trunk. I could then pull it out of his way and put it straight on the fire pile while he got busy cutting the next one, so it speeds up the whole tree clean-up process, and makes it very efficient. It’s so easy having the hoses tucked out of the way so I can just reach in there and grab what I need, and get it under control and out of the way swiftly.”

Catching up with the local CDL dealer, Brett McIntyre, over the phone, we hear that he also started out in the ag industry and then spent 16 years at AB Equipment, first as a tech, and then as a service manager, where he got to meet a lot of people in the forestry sector. He ventured out on his own 12 years ago, building MTB tracks. When

his mini excavator wasn’t on that task, he hired it out and the 2 Tyre Tracks and Hire grew from there. But he missed the forest industry, and the people in it, so stepped back in with the Satco and Ponsse dealerships for the South.

When Satco spun off CDL grapples to 3D Industrial, it was a natural progression to continue supplying the CDL grapples to his customers through 3D Industrial.

We are surprised to learn Brett has sold eight Ponsse harvesters and forwarders since 2019, and has two more on the water as we write. We should line at least one of these up for a future test.

Of the CDL units, Brett says: “They’re a good solid grapple, I like them. They are in stock in Invercargill here, ready to go. A lot of guys down here like to check things out thoroughly, but when they decide to go and buy it, they want to do it ‘now’, so that’s why we have stock ready for them. I have done a lot of work for Neville over the years, and also Anthony at his previous job, so they both knew they could depend on me for solid advice and supply when they needed to increase their tree handing capability.”

As well as the forestry equipment dealerships, Brett’s business also includes a busy repair and maintenance side, with 45 years of combined mechanical experience to call upon.

From farm shed to city workshop The story of 3D Industrial Engineering and CDL grapples begins in a shed on a family farm.

Matt Field, of 3D Industrial Engineering, says: “Our business began modestly in a concrete-slab shed my father kindly poured for me on our Waiotapu farm, about 20 minutes south of Rotorua. That small beginning – focused on portable line boring – was built with practical, hands-on engineering at its core. With steady support from my wife, Emma, the work slowly grew. We tried a couple of other ventures along the way, but we always returned to what we knew best: machining, fabrication and practical engineering solutions.

“Today we run an industrial manufacturing machine shop in Rotorua, employing 15 skilled and dedicated people. Our workshop is full of high-tech machinery and tooling, much of it devoted to supporting the forestry industry. We take pride in the capability and commitment of our team – each person contributes to the reliability and quality our customers expect.

“A few years ago the forestry downturn tested us. Contract machining work dried up and we found ourselves at a crossroads.

Rather than retreat, we looked for ways to secure work for our team. I reached out to Marty Camenzind and Bruce Martin at Holsters – word

on the street was they were busy – and offered our services. That call turned into an unexpected opportunity. Marty approached me about selling the CDL /Satco grapple side of their business, a line they’d run for 12 years.

Modern design, sturdy jaws THIS GRAPPLE HAS AMAZING CONTROL. It’s a bitterly cold Southland day, so it’s good to get out of that and into the warm Cat 320 cab, with a comfortable seat and pleasant tunes in the background to drown out the gale force winds. These guys know what they need on the job as this grapple is very well suited to the task of cleaning up windthrow and, with a bit of mastery, you can see it having advantages when butting up stacks and log trucks, and placing individual logs on the truck, as well as bunches.

The first thing I notice about this grapple is the amount of control it gives, and the second is the robust, modern design with sturdy jaws and hard facing as standard.

It looks like a tough unit and in this role it needs to be. This is the 852 M series, denoting the 210mm (8inch) jaw closed position and 1320mm (52inch) jaws open position. It weighs 1070kg. They also make the M864, with 1620mm (64inch) opening, weighing 1180kg, with a new, presumably larger, model coming soon.

The digital pattern changer in this machine is a nice touch as Neville and Anthony run different patterns, but luckily I’m on the same one as Anthony, so it’s smooth sailing

in that department. The grapple rotator is on the right joy stick, with a button solenoid activator. There’s a lot of buttons and levers and piping with the quick hitch, grapple open and close, bucket ram in and out, plus laser controls for grades, but when it comes to snaking the grapple into damaged standing trees to tidy them up after a storm, or pull apart the carnage from mass windfall events, most of those extra controls are very handy.

On the Cat 320 carrier, one of the standouts is the Bisalloy CNC panel on the operator’s door. It is a beautiful piece of work, and a very practical choice, considering some of the lower SED logs and branches being handled here and in their woodlot harvesting work. Behind that CNC panel the rear/side window is Margard, so when you do need to check gate posts and proximity to other obstructions, it’s a crystal clear view.

I noticed Anthony spends a fair bit of time in rabbit mode on the soft paddocks and its super quick – probably the fastest digger I have been in at 5.7km/h, but also a nice ride with the seat being a good one.

Having learnt to run excavators on a forest farm, starting out on buckets and moving to a thumb, then thousands of hours in Kaingaroa raking and spot cultivating, it was a challenge to the brain to then buy a Cat 320 of my own with a dangle grapple. For a short time I wanted the original designer of the dangle grapple to pay for his deviance, but then grew to love the flexibility, especially when shovelling stems. So it’s sort of full circle now to try out this “fixed” grapple that has a lot of flexibility and also a lot of control. Being able to turn the grapple sideways like a gangster, without having to sling it? Priceless. You could technically pull a gnarly branched tree to pieces limb by limb in a very safe manner with this unit. To see Anthony surgically dissecting the carnage in the macrocarpa shelterbelt is just a pleasure to watch, and wonder at how far technology has come since the days of fabbing up a thumb in the backyard three times before it’s strong enough, to now being able to roll down to a shop and buy this kind of wizardry.

one at a time because a) they’re very heavy, and b) they are a grapple load in themselves. They’re probably over 3 tonnes. The grapple holds well. The jaws fit nicely between the logs, rotation is crisp and responsive, and also powerful in the face of these heavy logs. No wonder Anthony and Neville are happy with it.

So, overall this CDL is a great grapple option as a logging grapple, and it’s also great to see what can be done with add-ons such as the Doherty tilting quick hitch. It’s a fun day out on a very capable machine. NZL

SKIDDER PRODUCTIVITY IN A Story: Professor Rien Visser, School of Forestry, University of Canterbury

O

VER THE LAST TWO DECADES, A lot of effort and research has focused on improving cable logging systems.

This has been driven by the need to mechanise for both productivity and safety reasons, and also in recognition of the fact that, in many regions, harvesting has moved on to ever steeper terrain.

The list of improvements is impressive, with motorised grapples, winch-assist, mobile tail holds, advanced operating controls and even remote-controlled

backline machines, all helping our yarding to be some of the most productive in the world.

As such, it is easy to overlook the “humble” skidder, which is still the number one extraction system in New Zealand. From the FGR Benchmarking system (Visser 2026), approximately 38% of the country’s professional logging crews use it as their preferred extraction system, and it extracts about 48% of all volume harvested.

To see exactly how the new skidders

are pushing the limits of modern productivity, University of Canterbury School of Forestry’s summer research students, Yotam Perchig and Noa Visser, supervised by Professor Rien Visser, set out to gauge the characteristics of one of the most productive skidder harvesting operations in the country.

Based in Rotorua, Trimax Logging is a family-owned and operated stems ground-based operation that, when conditions are good, has a target of 1250 tonnes per day.

N A HIGH PRODUCTION CREW Owner Scott Saunders runs the operation alongside his brother, Casey.

For the last two years Scott’s son, Fletcher, has joined the crew as well.

The production study focussed on the speed and capability of their modern skidder – a John Deere 948L-II Skidder operated by Casey. The rest of the team included a John Deere 959 and Komatsu 300, operated by Scott and Gareth Judd.

There were also two Komatsu 300s, operated by Fletcher and Jake Gielen, which were primarily tasked with

shovelling and loading the stems. On the landing was a John Deere 3156G loading stem trucks, operated by Shane Brabant.

The crew was visited mid-February while operating at the back of Tarawera Forest, near the falls. But, because of the market, there was a limited production quota of 1000 tonnes a day – making for slightly shorter days. The crew was competently supervised by Gordon Anderson-Smith and Peter Auge from Manulife. Also, Gordon was able to put the drone up giving some excellent bird’s-eye footage

of the operation (including the aerial photos seen here).

The block was certainly not easy, with plenty of steep terrain needing to be shovelled downslope to the designated skidder tracks. The average tree size was 1.9m3, with approximately 685 m3/ hectare.

Efficient harvesting The Trimax crew has put a lot of thought into making a very efficient harvesting system. The stems are delimbed at the

stump and then shovelled, before being gathered into consistent five or six stem bunches. This creates a roughly 10-tonne load, and by bunching them into neat piles, they eliminate the time a skidder might waste trying to break logs free from a surge pile or struggling to grab the right number of stems. It ensures the skidder has a constant, “ready-to-go” supply.

A central feature of the operation is the large stockpile of neatly stacked stems, positioned in the very centre of the landing. This strategic design, with the stockpile in the centre, allows the stem trucks to simply drive in and around the stockpile.

by Shane in the JD 3156 in an average of

just six and a half minutes (as recorded for 12 cycles). Another advantage of this landing configuration is that the stem trucks never have to spend time reversing or manoeuvring into position; they pull around, get loaded, and drive straight out.

Casey has been driving a skidder for over 20 years, and optimises his efficiency by knowing his own and his machine’s capabilities. As they only usually operate one skidder, Casey needs to complete about 100-120 cycles each day to meet the production target.

To maintain this pace, he keeps the manoeuvrable four-wheel skidder mainly on the road and/or designated skid trails, and then skilfully drops his drag on either the left or right side of the stockpile,

depending on whether or not a truck is present. This simple, but effective, tactic ensures that delays due to bottlenecking at the landing are very limited. It allows the skidder to achieve short cycle times and increases overall efficiency.

Perhaps the most critical component observed in the Trimax operation is the independence of each crew member.

As the workflow shows, there is plenty of production buffer at each machine location, which essentially eliminates bottlenecking. It allows each operator flexibility and governance over their own portion of the operation. As Scott noted, with Trimax, the philosophy is simple: as long as everyone does what is required of them, the wood keeps moving and the production stays high.

For the study, to capture this snapshot of a high production skidder system, a GPS unit was mounted on the skidder for the duration of the day, and the researchers placed themselves in a safe place to also record delays.

The study’s findings On the first day, 82 cycles were recorded in 6.25 hours of working time. Excluding delays, of which there were very few, it was,

on average, 4.1 minutes per cycle time at an average extraction distance of 273m.

Over half of all pulls had five stems, with a range of four to seven stems – on average

5.2. At an average volume of 1.9m3/stem, this equates to a payload of just over 10 tonnes per cycle, and hence a work-only time productivity of 145 tonnes per hour.

Of particular interest was the actual speed of the skidder; 25 km/hr unloaded along the road, slowing to approximately 6 km/ hr when backing uphill on the newly formed skid trail (see aerial image). Coming back down the skid trail loaded was 10 km/hr, but then an impressive 16 km/hr loaded along the track back to the skid. Time to pick up the load was typically less than 20 seconds (average 14 seconds). One reason for this very low time was Casey’s preference to reverse the skidder back out to pick up the next load, so there was no turn-around time. On average, it took 36 seconds to enter the landing area, drop and position the stems, and leave the landing again.

In terms of operational delays, the total was 39 minutes. The main one was the skidder using its blade to extend the

skidder track up the hill which took almost 25 minutes. There were also six short delays on the landing, where the stem truck prevented the skidder from entering the landing area.

Again, referencing the most recent benchmarking study, the average New Zealand skidder extraction crew has a target of 440 tonnes per day. As such, these stem crews being able to achieve over 1000 tonnes per day, is really quite exceptional.

It is very impressive to also note that Trimax don’t reach this target by using a lot of equipment – in fact they have just five primary machines, which is one fewer than the average ground-based crew.

Another metric, which can be more readily compared internationally, is the “per-person” efficiency which, for the

Trimax crew, is 27.5 m3 per person per hour – which is right up there with the best of the larger scale South-eastern USA and Scandinavian crews.

It is easy to point to the advantage of harvesting stems, and not having to process on the landing, in achieving a high production crew. However, it does show the potential of an operation that is not constrained by New Zealand’s propensity to encumber our logging operations with processing into many log sorts (current average is 11). It can help point towards a need to rationalise, or at least balance, our market driven desire to produce a large number of log sorts, with the actual impact on the harvesting operation in terms of cost and productivity.

remove equipment failure risk, and the volcanic soils certainly provide an additional wear and tear factor.

At the end of the first day, the skidder blew a tyre and it took until just after lunch on the second day to replace. However, the

strategy of adequate buffers and shovelling stems close to the landing allowed them to meet their target on day two as well.

OME OF THE TECHNOLOGY USED IN the clearing of landmines is being utilised to clear land of vegetation in New Zealand.

FAE’s RCU series of remote controlled compact tracked carriers is capable of shredding branches and wood pieces, grass and small shrubs and felling small trees.

The RCU series was developed by the Italian company, which also manufactures remote-

controlled demining carriers, equipped with a demining tiller or flail, and designed and certified to neutralise landmines.

The range consists of four models, powered

by Kohler diesel engines, producing 45, 56, 74 and 120 horsepower that are available in New Zealand through Active VMA. Ray Harrington, at High Country AG & Earthworks in Canterbury, recently took delivery of a RCU120.

“We’ve been mulching with ECan (Environment Canterbury) and DOC (Department of Conservation), and a few others, for a few years now,” he says.

“We’ve had two diggers on mulching since 2019 and we’ve just been mulching wildling trees, of different sizes, to the ground.”

He says over time, compared to spraying that requires return visits, using mulchers is an effective way of dealing with wildling pines.

g remote control “What we’ve found, and what we’ve shown, is it takes up to four years, and in some cases five years, before we get the trees coming back again to any great amount.

“You may get the odd one coming back in year three, but generally the mulch is actually stopping the trees – so even though the (initial) cost is quite high, the advantage is that you don’t have to go back over that area for three or four years, so it gives you a chance to forget about that area and move

into somewhere else.”

In many parts of the Mackenzie Country, spraying to get rid of wildling pines is forbidden, adding to the need for a mechanical solution to the problem.

Accessing the inaccessible Ray took delivery of the RCU120 last month.

“Due to health and safety, and a few other reasons, there’s a lot of trees that we can’t access with the diggers because it’s too

steep, and the diggers are too heavy, so we’ve got this machine to hopefully solve that.

“We’ve got a bit of work for it, and we’ll see how it goes.”

He initially looked at the RCU55, but felt it “wouldn’t cut the mustard” for the job he needed it to do.

“But the 120 has definitely got a lot of horse power, and goes very well, and because it’s 5 tonnes, and the width of it, we can probably do walking and cycle tracks with it – we can

“We are doing some briar at the moment, for rabbit control. They couldn’t get through for rabbit control, so we’re opening that up and taking out the briar and it’s doing that effectively and cost effectively. But as I say, we’re just trialling it and seeing what it goes like.

“It’s early days. We’ve only just bought it, and we’ve just got to work through everything, but people like what they see.

“But it’s got to be cost effective. It’s not all about us, it’s about our customers being happy with what we do, and providing the service that we do.”

For Ray, it’s still something new and, to some degree, a case of discovering what the machine can do.

“It is early days, but that’s why we purchased it – we like to be ahead of technology and give our customers the best bang for their dollar.

“We’ve always kept up with FAE, we’ve always run FAE gear, we find it very good – we’ve got a brand new mulcher due to arrive in the middle of May.” With a staff member who is pretty useful on Playstation, he jokes that it wasn’t too difficult to find someone who was adept at working the unit from a distance.

“The health and safety side of it – it helps with health and safety a lot because you 34 NZ LOGGER | June 2026

haven’t got a driver on it, and that thing can go up to 55° before it will stop itself.”

A specially modified sump allows oil to be picked up on any slope up to 55°. The heavy-duty undercarriage features a hydraulic variable track system, with independent undercarriage frames, for maximum stability on steep terrain.

Ray is confident it will do what he wants it to do.

“We wanted something that could do the small to 8ft (2.4m) high trees and can do it, hopefully, cheaper than the digger heads.

“Also, with a digger, you have to get into different areas and you have to break down some stuff from time to time (to get there), whereas this – it’s a lot smaller, so we can drive round a lot more things.”

A smaller RCU55 is in the hands of Jason Keith of TotalGroundCare, based in Warkworth. He first saw it at the National Fieldays in 2024.

The RCU55 is a compact, remote controlled tracked carrier designed for forestry, agricultural and municipal applications. It is built for working in hard-to-reach areas, and on steep terrain, with safe and efficient operation, and high stability and traction.

With work ranging from lawn mowing to land clearance, the business was started

by Jason and his dad Ross three and a half years ago.

“We bought a company that had 120 residential lawns and from there we started going into more ride-on, acre blocks and stuff like that, going from push mowing to bigger things straight away.

“Now we’ve got six ride-ons, a side-byside unit with six different spray packs or units, a couple of diggers, a tractor, quad bike and another remote control.”

The first remote control machine, a Green Climber remote control lawn mower, was bought second hand to test the water.

“We really did it just for the safety perspective of not being on a machine. With the remote control we can get into thick areas where you don’t have to be on a machine and get smacked in the face by a branch every 10 seconds.”

With the new RCU machine, Jason hopes to get into clearing and other work for the forestry industry and, with a range of existing contacts, can see the potential.

“Since we bought the machine, we’ve not pushed it as much as we should be, we’re trying to find a bit of balance between keeping customers happy, but at the same time pushing these (remote control) machines.

“But we’re getting to that now – we’ve got two new staff and one has done most of the remote control work.”

There is work in the pipeline to open up entrance ways for forestry operations to get into areas they need to.

“Instead of getting a 30 tonne digger in there and making an absolute mess of it, we can go in and make a pathway that’s a lot tidier at a quarter of the pricing.

“We are also trying to get more into the bigger forestry clearance work, getting our name out there that we’ve got the machine.”

Potentially, that is where the safety aspects will be an even greater advantage.

“You don’t have to be on the machine, so you can go up banks and under trees and not have to worry about the person operating it, which I’m really happy about.

“Especially in those forestry blocks that you look at, you can stand 200ft away from it and not have to worry about what’s going on, where it’s spitting out the debris – it’s really great.”

He says the controls are not difficult to operate.

“It is quite a niche, and you can’t just chuck someone on the machine that doesn’t know what they’re doing.

Quite a smart machine “When we first got the small machine, it took a day or two to get the hang of it. This one (RCU55), it’s not that complicated once you get your head around it – it’s more common sense, really, that you have to have on it – not how it operates, but you don’t go up a big bank and turn it hard one way or you could

tip it on its side – you’ve just got to know the territory and the ground that you are going on with it.

“But it’s not a hard machine to use – I love it, it’s actually quite smart.”

He has used the machine to get rid of an area of small trees up to 8 inches in diameter.

“It just dropped them. If we’d had to go in

there with saws and guys to clear that, which is what we would have been doing, it would have taken a day, but it took an hour and a half.

“You’re not putting guys under trees, not putting them into gorse with all the spikes or into nightshade where, if you touch it, it gives you an itchy rash – all those things.

“It’s a really good efficient machine and safe for workers “We’ve not done the bigger stuff yet, but I’ve been watching videos over in America of these machines, and I am absolutely gobsmacked on how well they cope with dropping trees and gorse and all of that.”

The variable track system that increases stability is another feature Jason says he loves.

“It’s quite a big machine, of course, it weighs about 2.8 tonnes, and opening those tracks up gives you more stability on those slopes and more traction as you are spreading the weight. As you are going into a tree or a big bush, you are spreading your tracks out as much as you can, and it’s really giving it the power to push into it.”

The depth of tread on the tracks complements that with greater grip.

From a fuel efficiency point of view, Jason is very happy.

“It uses about 20-30 litres a day, give or take – for a machine of that size, and that power, I was quite surprised, I thought it might have used a bit more. Of course, it depends on what you do – the bigger and thicker stuff uses the power a bit more – but, for what we have done with it, I’m really happy on how little it uses.

“It’s definitely a machine you can look at and go, cool, this is a machine that can do the work you need to do, without having to really worry about yourself, and it’s effortless what it does.”

Ray Copland, Attachments Product Manager at Rotorua-based Active VMA, says the FAE Group has decades of experience manufacturing heavy-duty tracked carriers – most notably the renowned PT series – and has now brought its engineering expertise to the compact remote-control mulcher market.

FAE had long supplied its industryleading fixed-tooth mulching heads to other manufacturers, he says.

“However, the lack of compatibility and purpose-built integration often caused operational issues for end users. This prompted FAE to take a different approach.

“FAE recognised a gap in the market for a fully engineered, purpose-built machine.

Rather than adapting an existing platform,

they built the RCU series from the ground up – taking the innovation of the PT range and miniaturising it into a compact, remotecontrolled package.”

A standout feature is the specially designed cone-shaped oil sump, which enables the machines to operate safely on slopes of up to 55°.

All critical components, including hydraulic pumps and electronics, are enclosed within a protective chassis, providing durability and shielding from debris and environmental hazards.

Performance is further enhanced by FAE’s intelligent load control management system.

This system monitors rotor load in real time, automatically adjusting the machine’s forward speed when tackling heavy material, and returning to normal once the load lightens, allowing operators to focus on terrain and other tasks.

Built with rugged terrain in mind, all RCU units come standard with a hydraulically adjustable undercarriage, triple-flanged idlers, automatic track tensioning, and an oscillating roller system. Rubber tracks are standard, with an option for steel single

Having had a good feed of steak and chips with an egg on top at Joe’s Garage in Dunedin, I was looking forward to catching up with Tony Gamble, from Gamble Forest Harvesting Ltd, for my tour of contractors located around Dunedin. He must have thought I was important, because we took his town ute rather than the work ute.

Tony runs a swing yarder/ground-based combo for City Forests. Tony took the business over from his Dad, and all up, the business has worked for City Forests for close to 50 years.

Having finished my cappuccino and a couple of cameo creams, and solved the forest industry’s issues, we headed off to catch up with Shane Griffith (Shane Griffith Logging).

Olly’s parting comment was that it was Bluff Oysters season and I should expect oysters for dinner later that night at Tony’s place.

He has recently purchased a new Tigercat Feller Buncher with a fixed head to reduce breakage, increase production and value recovery. I understand the fixed felling head is the first of its type developed by Tigercat. It might warrant another trip down that way when it arrives in the country.

All up, it was a great day in the field, topped off by a homecooked meal with Tony and Maree. Not Bluff Oysters but better.

We met Shane at home. Shane is a long-term FICA member and runs four harvesting crews in Otago, mainly for Wenita.

Over a coffee and a couple of super wines we had a really good talk about all aspects of running a logging business.

The key takeaway was Shane’s intimate understanding of the numbers and how he uses this to make better decisions in his business. Shane also had a well laid out succession plan that he had developed in collaboration with their Forest Manager.

We left Shane’s to head up to our final visit of the day – Grant Stewart (Stewart Logging Ltd). Grant has recently rejoined FICA, having previously left when he’d had an issue and didn’t believe he’d had the support he deserved from FICA. I was able to reassure Grant using some specific, recent examples of where FICA had supplied support to members.

Grant has one fully mechanised hauler crew working for Wenita. They returned home two years ago having spent a ten-year tour of duty in Gisborne.

This Cat 538LL forest machine is a new acquisition for Tohaia Forestry Harvesting. The 538 showcases the purpose-built Next Gen FM elements to enhance operator comfort, machine productivity and fuel performance. Working for BJ Tohaia, it also features a rear entry cab and Duxson BX1100 grapple. The 538 was sold by Rotorua-based Territory Account Manager Mark Costello.

Southland logging contractor Ngawaka and his wife Betty, of Ngahere Harvesting, recently took delivery of a new Komatsu PC300HW-8 fitted with a Waratah 624. It’s working in a hardwood application with its power, speed, track power and smooth application meaning it does the work with ease. Ngawaka is extremely happy with his choice. Sold and supported by Komatsu Forest.

This Cat 548LL Forest Machine is the first Next Generation FM arrival for Jensen Logging. Showcasing a low cab log loader spec, and an Ensign heel and grapple combination, the 548 is hard at work shovel logging in Kaingaroa. The operator is very impressed with the features of the purpose-built Cat, especially its reach and operator comfort. Mark Costello from Terra Cat sold the machine.

Stephen and Gloria Rist, from Ocean View Logging, Whakatāne, recently took delivery of a new Tigercat LH857 Feller Buncher. It’s early days, but operator Ken was impressed with its power and performance, offered with the extra tilt, due to the sloped tail, and also the good lift power.
