CHALLENGE VALLEY

The 23rd New Zealand Scout Jamboree would not be complete without the regular, firm favourite, Challenge Valley. This activity will be discussed for years to come by Scouts and Karārahi. The base set in the grounds of Mystery Creek is an opportunity for the Scouts to get muddy, very muddy. There is a section of the course where Scouts need to navigate and identify items by touch and understand communication by hand signals with a covering of mud and a lack of agility. The smiles from the Scouts at the end of the course were a testament that this was a firm favourite for all.

The seesaw was a bit of a different challenge and was difficult with mud on my feet. Matthew Tolorese Time Bandits

I really enjoyed the balance beam when we had to link arms because it needed a bit of teamwork and was a good challenge Caitlyn Rolleston Wonderland

Scouts are no strangers to adventure, but preparing for the unexpected is a core discipline. Scouts received Emergency Response and First Aid Lifesaving skills that extend far beyond the handbook. A simulated car crash provided the scenario where Scouts practiced treating strains, sprains, breaks, hypothermia and hyperthermia, in the field with competence, and a calm demeanour. They learnt to assess situations swiftly, act decisively, and provide aid effectively, often in remote or challenging environments. Central was patient care and transport. Scouts were given techniques for safely moving an injured person across a river to an evacuation point, through teamwork and coordination.

AUSTRALIAN SCOUTS This morning, we’ve been cooking rice and meat to make Quesadillas. The 23rd New Zealand Jamboree has been fun, being my first Jamboree and my first trip overseas too. I joined Scouts two years ago. This has been my biggest Scout Camp. I can’t wait to have more fun on the last few days of the Jamboree before heading on a post-tour. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences with my friends from 1st Maryborough, there will be five of us attending post-tour. I’m looking forward to finishing off the Jamboree with the Quad bikes to finish off the Jamboree. My favourite Jamboree meal so far has been the butter chicken.Alex, 1st Maryborough

CAMTRAMBIK ters

o o h s p r a Sh

Among the thrilling adventures of Jamboree, Scouts embraced the challenge of mastering two exciting skills as part of the CAMTRAMBIK rotation. Divided into separate bases were rifle shooting and archery, these activities allowed Scouts to learn and hone their precision and focus. Under the watchful eyes of experienced Kaiārahi Range Masters, Scouts at the shooting range learned to handle rifles responsibly. Safety was paramount as they aimed at targets, experiencing the satisfaction of hitting the bullseye and improving marksmanship skills.

Meanwhile, at the archery base, Scouts delved into the art of using bows, discovering the thrill of accurately releasing arrows. The rhythmic twang bowstrings echoed through Mystery Creek as Scouts embraced the challenge of hitting their designated targets. Once the scouts had demonstrated their skills, the Scout teams faced off against each other in a game of archery tag to determine the bragging rights for the day. Jamboree has strengthened the Scouts’ physical abilities and instilled a sense of discipline and focus, fostering a memorable experience.

INTERNATIONAL NIGHT s t u o c or S f e r u t Cul

At every Aotearoa New Zealand Jamboree, the international contingents attending produce a song or dance Segment for the International Night to share their unique culture with the Scouts assembled in The Pavillion at Mystery Creek Event Centre. The event was hosted by members of the Youth Leadership Team, with Rose and Dan as the Masters of Ceremony. After the initial introduction, an assembly of New Zealand Gang Show participants performed a Pepeha was followed by a lone Scout with a rendition of their skills on the Bagpipes. The largest contingent at the New Zealand Jamboree from Australia gave us a rousing rendition of the song “ Give Me a Home Among the Gumtrees.” The Scouts displayed Dance Skills from French Polynesia, New Caledonia and the Cook Islands. To emphasise the global nature of the Scouting Movement, the crowd were shown a video produced from the events at the World Scout Jamboree in 2023, held in South Korea. The size and scope of that Jamboree were evident from the experiences of the New Zealand Contingent. The evening was brought to a close with the Scouts from the Cook Islands performing traditional dances with Drums weaving a hypnotic accompanying beat. Rounding out the performance with a rousing Haka.

Cook Islands Boy Scouts

Kia Orana, we are incredibly proud to be here at the 23rd New Zealand Scouts Jamboree in Mystery Creek, Hamilton, New Zealand, all the way from the Cook Islands. We have arrived as a Troop of 21 participants with our Commissioner as the Contingent Leader, three Leaders (one Leader is at Staff camp), 15 boys Scouts and two JSTs.

For most of these boys, this is their first time attending an international Jamboree, and they are all excited about the activities. No challenge is significant, and we are encouraging all our boys to try all the activities that we are given. It has been an awesome time, with most of our boys completing the offsite activities.
