INFOCUS 2016

NZIPP President Katherine Williams FNZIPP IV and AAIPP

United in the perusal of this magical craft for many of us in the room tonight it is far beyond just our profession. It is our love, our obsession, pulsing through our veins we practice in our minds eye even when we are not experiencing the act of doing it.

Hand on heart the success and incredible experience of the the Iris Awards, Exposure, and Infocus for 2016 was one I will hold with me forever. It is an honour to be part of a team that cares so much for our professional photography community and I am just so excited for the great potential we have ahead. If you missed it this year we’d love you to join us next year! Thank you so much once again to the many volunteers and presenters who helped in ways both big and small to make it awesome including…. Tracy Stamatakos, Clinton Lloyd, Gino Demeer, Kaye Davis, Blair Quax, Esther Bunning, Paul Daly, Ollie Dale, Sean Dick, Claire Birks, Rachel Callander, Craig Forster, Richard Linton, Chris Parker, Doug Richardson, Mel Waite, Kate Christie, Jenna Young, Jason Naylor, Julia Lochhead, Richard Wood, Fleur Verhoeven, Loren O’Connor, Jackie Ranken, Mike Langford, Tony Carter, Terry Wreford Hann, Melissa Anderson, Penny Aspin, Susana Barbera, Sarah Beaufoy, Catherine Cattanach, John Crawford, Melissa Gardi, Troy Goodall, Adam Finch, David Hamilton, Glen Howey, Emma Hughes, Simone Jackson, Darren Jew, Mandi Lynn, Anthony McKee, Ian Poole, James Simmons, Rob Suisted, Nicola Wilhelmsen, Russell Hamlet, Johannes Van Kan, Vicky Papas Vergara, Niki Boon, Christina Force, Kim Hamblin, Grant Sheehan, Kelly Vanyai, Jonathan Suckling, Jason Blair, Aneta Naylor, Stefan Simons, Mike Watson, Paul Gummer, Ian Rotherham, Deanna Walker, Elena Burger, Ricky Yoo, Ebony Lamb, Sarah Champion, Brittany Adams, Ori Bismark, Em Blackmore, Emily Borrie, Laura Harrington,

Nicole Hickford, Trina Rofe, Jonathan Oak, Zoe McBrydie, Ned Moess, Michaela Nicholson, Haylee Richards, Alex Tweedy, Stefan Simons, Jo Frances-Moore, Peter Blaxter, Lucian Nistor, Alicia Bennett, Jenny Siaosi, Jane Nelson, Nick Servian and Emily Smith. A MASSIVE shout out to our incredible industry supporters…we love you guys! For those who may enjoy it here’s my speech from Gala Dinner night…

f

It takes us into worlds we have not breathed, felt or seen and entices us there. It can exhibit the great flight of imagination - a delightful daydream or a nightmarish hallucination. It tells stories, discloses the truth, or it may induce belief in a lie. It transcends language barriers and is the most powerful tool of universal communication. It is Photography. And how lucky are we? United in the perusal of this magical craft for many of us in the room tonight it is far beyond just our profession. It is our love, our obsession, pulsing through our veins we practice in our minds eye even when we are not experiencing the act of doing it. That intensity of desire to explore the potential of photography brings with it an appetite for excellence. Tonight we are here to celebrate the very best with our friends and photographic family. Going beyond the just the art of capture and towards the craft of finessing that capture into something tangible delivering the ultimate visual expression - the photographic print. Supporting you as photographers to Exceed Your Vision - Epson have supported the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography Iris Awards as principal sponsors for 17 years and we are very proud to have them alongside us for the 2016 Iris Awards, Exposure, and InFocus conference. Thank you Epson. Powerful, yet prolific. Some of the proliferation of photography and ease of access to the technology has certainly resulted in the demise in the power that a human being may experience when they see a photograph. We have seen so much, there is so little that is now new, and yet every year we are given the gift of coming here to experience our eyes being opened to something presented to us in a new way, like a breath of fresh air. One of the goals we strived towards this year was to bring more members of the public to see and enjoy professional photography and to open our world to others so they may gain an appreciation for what we do. We are very pleased to share with you that through the addition of Exposure this year we brought in an impressive additional 800 people through the doors in addition to you all! When fingers pointed towards me to take on this role I had promised myself that I would be myself, and this is my one opportunity to speak to you all from my heart. I don't want to miss that chance. Technology and society has changed so rapidly and as a result our beautiful industry has suffered - the statistics tell us this is so. The savy evolve but much works against them. In many ways we have worked against ourselves. And for this I don't mean as individuals but how we function as a team, as a community. Most of us know we are stronger together - but we are still working out how to do that best, and as a result we often waver.

Amongst our working photographic community there is generational diversity - Baby boomers, Generation X, the Millennials and the centennials - thinking is different amongst us, in part because of generational diversity it's time to remove any rose-tinted glasses, respond acceptingly to these society changes, and then we can do our very best to make NZIPP into the place it needs to look like to serve our professional community in 2016 and beyond. Making this event happen has literally created tears of frustration, sleepless nights and days of angst - yet it has been nothing but brilliant. Tracy Stamatakos now this girl is a warrior she blows me away. Kaye Davis - there could not be a more selfless person in this room than you. Gino and Clinton thanks for jumping in the deep end and joining us. Honours team, judges, students. There is many many more of you - many of you know who you are. Everyone who ever shared our Facebook posts, helped with calling people, mentored someone who was ready to enter the Iris Awards, put up their spare room to help someone get here. That is being part of community. Volunteers - a truck load of them. That's what makes all of this happen. And that's what sets the foundation of a community - when we help each other. The NZIPP has been built by volunteers - The 65 past presidents of the NZIPP, many hundreds of board members, honours council, regional chairpersons, committee members have over the years sacrificed and continue to sacrifice personal and business time for the care of the photographic industry and our community. I can tell you to be a volunteer, you work for free, sometimes you need a thick skin which is not easy - but you take financial gain away and the stakes totally change. To drive to succeed is huge, it's not about just one person, it's about everyone. The presidential chain is a representation of the volunteer community spirit and acknowledges some of the people who have gifted their time over the past 78 years. It is not about honouring one person and putting them on a pedestal, it is about honouring what we do together - the names engraved on the links within it are a beautiful historical record of some of these people. Our decision as a board to frame the chain has been a decision made out of respect for our future. We want to break down false pedestals and open up doors for a stronger feeling of what we can achieve when we draw together as a team and create pathways to encourage the contribution of innovative ideas from everyone who is hungry to help in assisting the photography industry in New Zealand to become stronger. There are still many more thank-you's to be made. Our previous board and two most recent presidents We greatly appreciate your support. Russell Hamlet - your huge belief in us and cheeky sense of humour. Mike Langford - you have truly been there for us, even after the wine has been poured, always there with both historical knowledge, an open mind and ever supportive of the photographic community in New Zealand. I would like to extend a thank you and warm welcome to the Mayor or Wellington Celia Wade Brown and her husband Alastair who have joined our celebrations tonight.

One of the elements for long time sustainability and enjoying all aspects of business in our industry comes through enjoying great relationships, and I am a big believer that People do business with people. We'd like to encourage you to buy from your local suppliers, create and harness excellent relationships and let those in our local market, those you can put a face too support you and help you succeed in your business and craft. NZIPP would like to express the gratitude to not just the brand names who represent the sponsorship for Iris Awards, Exposure and Infocus 2016. But also for the amazing people behind these brands who can be the people standing beside you on your pathway as a professional photographer. Epson, thank so much for your support as principal sponsors. CR Kennedy, thank you for coming on board as platinum sponsors and for your many years of great support. Our Gold sponsors - Bride and Groom Magazine, Canon, Independent Photographic Supplies, New Zealand Weddings, and Nikon. We have category sponsorship from Ilford and DPhoto. Each of the categories within the Iris Awards represent a specialization of significance to photographers within the industry, coming with it's own set of unique skills. It is our hope that one day we can offer entrants of the Iris Awards category sponsorship for each of our award categories. Entrants, it's a beautiful cycle you know, support our supporters and they support you. Thank you so much to all of our Silver sponsors - D Photo, Eizo, FujiFilm, Intuition to Succeed, Lacie, Momento Pro, and Queensberry. Our media partners f11 and Pro Photographer magazine. And Absolutely Positively Wellington City Council our venue partner whose support helped us towards a seemingly impossible goal to host in the fabulous venue at Shed 6. This is a huge event, and the NZIPP has a tiny staff - Gina, Harriet and Holly between them work less than 40 hours a week. And in the months of build up to the event we are just so incredibly lucky that they have wanted to see it succeed as much as we have and have put in many pro bono hours for us. Thank you to Peter and Melissa at Seven events for coming onboard at the eleventh hour and making sense of our crazy schemes, no matter what we threw at you. I'd like to extend a massive thank you to both CR Kennedy and Canon who in true community spirit made it possible for all of our student helpers to be here tonight. Thank you to our Australian friends at the AIPP and the president Ross Eason for joining us. To Nick Tressider AIPA president and Peter Robinson PSNZ president for joining us, we are thrilled to have you here and love that we can enjoy fantastic relationships with you. Lastly, thank you so much to our speakers - I feel we are incredibly lucky to have been inspired and educated by these talented individuals. The NZIPP moves forward in strength. I want to take the opportunity to invite you to have a voice, to have a pair of working hands and to be proactive as a member and in the photographic community. This institute and the photographic industry in New Zealand is no more mine to take to success than it is yours. It's almost time for the celebration of the individuals enjoying pinnacles of success at the Epson NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards for 2016, I'd like to ask you to celebrate what brought you here tonight. And I'll leave you with these few words, to encourage you to enjoy yourjourney and inspire you into your successes of tomorrow. In the words Imogen Cunningham. Which is my favourite photograph? The one I am going to take tomorrow. NZIPP PRO Report - Iris Awards Issue

EXECUTIVE UPDATE

Honours Council Report Kaye Davis GMNZIPP, MAIPP II, MCGD - Chair of the NZIPP Honours Council On behalf of the Honours Council Team; Blair Quax, FNZIPP, Accredited Wedding Photographer Esther Bunning, GMNZIPP, Accredited Wedding and Portrait Photographer Paul Daly, FNZIPP, Accredited Commercial Photographer.

The 2016 Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards Gala Dinner on Monday 20 June was the climax that followed five days of photographic indulgence, and what was likely the best event NZIPP has ever hosted. Largely the result of a relatively small group of dedicated volunteers working hard behind the scenes to make it happen this was no easy feat, but passion, commitment and determination won over and the Iris Awards, Exposure and Infocus event was heralded as a huge success. The event, held at Wellington’s Shed 6 on the Queens Wharf Waterfront, kicked off with three days of fantastic judging, where panels of judges assessed a total of 1139 prints across twelve different photographic categories and genres, including Commercial, Creative, Documentary, Illustrative, Travel, Landscape, Portrait, Wedding, Student and the newest category Wildlife and Wild Places. The caliber of judging, along with the standard of entries this year, was exceptionally high and this was acknowledged with an unprecedented 13 Gold Distinction and 59 Gold awards presented, Judges also awarding 61 Silver Distinction, 252 Silver and 436 Bronze awards. Panels of national and international Judges were wowed by innovative concepts, a high level of technical excellence and beautiful print quality. The high number of public attendees also rewarded with a gallery exhibition of over 800 photographic prints. At the awards dinner we celebrated both category winners and the overall winners, with special congratulations going to: Australian photographer Lisa Saad, as International Photographer of the Year; Ilan Wittenberg winner of the CR Kennedy sponsored Highest Scoring Print Award; Marama Shearer as winner of the inaugural James White Memorial Award (presented to an NZIPP member who, as a first time entrant into the awards, attains the highest aggregate from their top four prints), and the ultimate New Zealand Photographer of the Year award going to Christchurch photographer Katherine Williams.

The evening also saw a number of NZIPP Accredited Members receive Honours Distinctions, achieved through earning merit points through the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards won. This year 7 Associates, 13 Master of Photography, 6 Bar to Master, 13 Fellow and 11 Bar to Masters were awarded. In addition 3 members were awarded with the Institute’s highest distinction, that of Grand Master of Photography. Another special mention though must go to Queenstown photographer Jackie Ranken, who was the first person to be awarded a Bar to Grand Master, recognising a long term commitment to photographic excellence. Please enjoy what this special edition coverage of the 2016 Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards, we hope, through taking in these images you are able appreciate the healthy state that NZ’s professional photography industry is currently in.
