EXECUTIVE UPDATE

The NIKON / NZIPP Iris Professional Photography awards, in its 36th year, is the only print awards for professional photographers in New Zealand, attracting entries from both within New Zealand and overseas. The Iris Awards are a forum where professional photographers have the opportunity to have their work peer-reviewed by panels of distinguished national and international judges. Photographers are challenged to develop and grow their photographic practice and capabilities through entering and the awards also help establish standards within the profession. For three days in Wellington, judges viewed and evaluated 1168 entries across fourteen categories; including Book, Commercial, Creative, Documentary, Family, Illustrative, Landscape, Nature, Portrait In-Camera Artistry, Portrait Open, Student, Travel, Wedding InCamera Artistry and Wedding Open. The standard of judging was exceptional as was the standard of entries, with judges using words such as heart, passion, innovative, creative and masterful to describe much of the work.

This year judges awarded; 457 Bronze, 222 Silver, 59 Silver with Distinction, 25 Gold and 5 Gold with Distinction awards. The number of awards reflecting the level of quality presented, again pushing standards within the profession higher overall. Overlapping and extending two days beyond the IRIS AWARDS judging, attendees at this year’s event, held in Shed 6 on the Wellington Queens Wharf Waterfront, were spoilt for choice through the ILFORD EXPOSURE and INFOCUS. This included workshops, trades exhibition / display, photo tours, demonstrations, and presentations, prepared and led by key international and national speakers, all running alongside the IRIS AWARDS judging event and exhibition. The venue was packed with enthusiasts, professionals, industry suppliers and the general public from around NZ and overseas, all embracing the culture and excitement of everything photographic. This year’s awards ceremony was held at the Intercontinental Hotel, the event once again a sell out.
For the major award winners on the night, congratulations go to: Lisa Saad, winner of both the Ilford sponsored Highest Scoring Print and International Photographer of the Year awards; Sarah Caldwell, awarded the James White Memorial Award (presented to a NZIPP member who as a first time entrant achieves the highest aggregate from the top four prints); and the top prize, that of 2018 NZ Professional Photographer of the Year, awarded to New Plymouth photographer Tony Carter (the sixth time this legend has been awarded the top award). In addition to the premier photography awards, the NZIPP awarded 13 Associates, 13 Masters of Photography, 8 Bar to Masters, 4 Fellow, 7 Bar to Fellow and 4 Grand Masters of Photography distinctions. Alongside that, the NZIPP awarded renowned photographer Sue Bryce with an NZIPP Honorary Fellow award, in recognition of her service to the profession of photography.
This year’s event was full of enthusiasm, laughter and a real family spirit.
