What a wonderful and positive feeling there was at this years Epson / NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards, 75th Jubilee celebration and Infocus conference in Auckland this year. To all of those who made this week possible, a thousand times thank you! This year was a record breaking one for attendance at all the events, so a huge thank you to everyone who attended and made it the great success it was. The general feeling was that the whole range of events was befitting that of turning seventy-five. Congratulations to all of you who entered and achieved awards this year. What a wonderful boost this will be to your marketing from now on. Be sure to maximise your achievements and to communicate your success. To those who entered the Iris Awards, but who didn’t win awards, I hope that you were there to listen to the enlightened comments the judges shared and that you learnt from the experience and will enter again next year with an even better skill set and an even better chance of achieving your award winning goals. To those who attended the Infocus conference – what a fantastic and social experience you all had. The keynote speakers of Greg Heisler and Rachael Hale McKenna exceeded expectations and proved once again that those photographers who are at the top of their game are also top people who have no fear of sharing their knowledge with all who listen. Thank you Greg and Rachael. To our invited speakers of Trey Ratcliff, Tony Hewitt, Karyn Flett and Jennifer Myers, thank you also for providing the delegates with information and processes that will help sustain and grow their businesses far into the future. All shared their knowledge and experience freely and openly and I sincerely thank you all for that. To Rachael, Russell and Jackie, thank you for being brave enough to express your creativity on stage in front of 200 delegates. You were awesome! To Anne Geddes, our newly appointed Patron. Thank you for accepting this role and for the wonderful acceptance speech you made. For those who weren’t able to make it to hear her on the night, please have a listen and be challenged and inspired by Anne’s presentation. This is available for viewing on the home page of our website under NZIPP Patron. What impressed me most about the week in Auckland was the comradely between photographers from all photographic persuasions from all over the country. Knowledge and experience was shared by everyone, from students through to Grand Masters. It seemed everyone had one thing in mind and that was to grow and better the profession of photography and they all succeeded! My thanks go to all of those who entered and attended the awards, attended the conference and the 75th Jubilee reception and who were still standing to celebrate the Gala dinner – you all did us proud.

Commercial Directors Report

Great so see so many fantastic and diverse images entered in to the commercial section of the awards, three golds in the section plus heaps of silver and bronze puts the category in the running again for the future. So for those that left it to late this year (I know a few!) get your act together for 2014, I know that there are some great commercial shooters out there. After this last AGM it seems this page in PRO REPORT has my name on it again. As Commercial Director I would like to fill it with relevant stuff, so what is it that you want to hear about? Does the institute do enough for the commercial area? Without feedback from you guys it is difficult to know what to rant on about, research for you etc. Has anyone got any pricing strategy ideas? Things that have worked well in the past. Here is one from me to start the ball rolling. How many times has a client said “I have not got the budget for that”? Heaps! Well if you license your work (of course you do…) then use that as a selling point. If you really want to do the job for them ask what it is they can afford. “Well that will license X amount of images over Y period” you say, “but I tell you what I will do, I will shoot your job and show you a selection of great images, from these you can choose your X amount of images that you have budget for and any others that you would like will cost Z amount”. In all cases that I have done this the client has over spent their budget because they can see value in it. There are other options to throw in, for example if the images that you are shooting are generic enough to have some stock value you can cut a better deal my making the license non exclusive. Yes I guess this is a speculative approach, but hey, we are living in a time when budgets are tight and there are a lot of others out there wanting a slice of the same pie, time to start thinking a bit more laterally. Don’t agree with anything I say? Let me know I love feedback, good or bad your not going to put a dent in my day! Shoot well and prosper

Well I definitely know I’m back in the saddle, my e-mail volumes have quadrupled! It just goes to show how much work goes on for you guys behind the scenes and the just completed annual conference was a result of plenty of that. Each time we Directors (et al ) go on about everyone being there, and no kidding you should be. I know there is more competition for your educational dollar these days with the advent of Creative Live and other such sources, but nothing beats meeting so many people with the collective goal of getting better at what we do. Even as I write this we are contacting speakers for next year, who will be inspirational and informative. Our illustrious President has tentacles that encompass the globe and Mike is excited already about a potential speaker. Apart from the friendships, education is what we are after and your board seeks to provide that constantly. With Wellington our next venue, being centrally placed, it should be pretty easy to get to and budget for. Forgive me for being a bit presumptuous, but if you put away $25 per week till then that should cover most of it for most of us. The last time I wrote for you in this role I was saying good-bye. My wife said I was going through a mid–life, and to just take off and get it out of my system. New York and a totally different industry beckoned. The first time I drove across the Washington bridge into Manhattan I just thought holy s**t ! I’ve travelled heaps but that city scared me for sheer density and energy. I was a long way from home and on my own. It was an incredible yet sobering experience. I learnt a lot about myself, but also that people everywhere respond to the same thing. To be listened to (and heard) . To have a need to know our contribution to the whole and to be empowered to achieve it. Eventually time and distance took their toll. I just missed my wife and kids too much. Man it’s amazing how love can be amplified by absence. It’s a desperate part of the world and many of the populace face grinding poverty. It was no place for my family. My darling wife was left with our business to run and it strained her greatly which I regret. I want to thank Chris Traill for being a rock for Laura and helping her so much in my absence. Any way we got stuck back into it on my return and we have had the best year ever. My lesson was to value what I already had and to stick to my knitting. I came back with a greater appreciation of everything, and that I was blessed with the career I already had. My selling style is even more relaxed and my successes the greater for it. We are just constantly striving to do better at finding out what our clients want and giving it to them. The level of work that many of you are producing is awesome, but if the approaches I have had since my return are anything to go by, there are many of you who should be better rewarded. It is our goal as an institute and for me personally to help those who want helping to get there. Come on brothers and sisters, attend all your regional meetings and share and grow. Let’s get together all of us in Wellington next time and have a blast and get inspired. Go back to your regions and leave a legacy that only the stilled moment can so uniquely do.

Wedding Directors Report

What’s your brand tactics…? I’m the first to admit I am a total sucker for gorgeous packaging, beautiful branding and great design. Many of my purchasing decisions are based on the strength of the brand and the pretty box it comes in. As business people it’s imperative we make well thought out decisions about our branding – small business or one-man band alike. A couple of years ago we had recently re-branded. A costly exercise but we saw it as a great investment. Right amidst the recession we booked some clients in with our “foot in the door” wedding package at just under 3K. A few months later but before this bride-to-be’s wedding we sent an album and canvas print out as a delivery to another clients family member finished with our beautiful wrapping and gorgeous new stickers. As chance would have it the delivery went to a work place of a client’s sister whom just happened to work alongside our recently booked bride-to-be. Bride-to-be spotted our lovingly wrapped print and bold logo straight away and asked eagerly for a peak. Seeing her colleague’s sister in the album blew her away and instantly the value of her future photography was elevated. We received an email that night and by the end of the week their contract with us had almost tripled in value. Without our wrapping and branding boldly enticing her the interest of our client most likely would not have been engaged and our competitors (no I’m not talking about other photographers – our real competitors which are other luxury items) probably would have enjoyed their spends instead. Ultimately these clients happily spent well over 4 times their original contract and I firmly believe that our branding was pivotal in making this happen. So what does a great brand do? •

It connects your prospects emotionally.

•

It differentiates you and makes you memorable.

•

It gives credibility makes your business seem more legitimate.

•

It gives your customers an overall perception of your business values.

•

It makes the customers purchasing decisions easy and motivates the buyer.

•

It concretes client loyalty.

•

It elevates your clients perception of the value of your services and products.

These things are hard to achieve without a consistent brand identity, so how do you go about building a strong brand identity? A strong brand must be motivated by the business owners core values. Start by asking the questions - What is your mission? What do you and your business stand for? This is at the heart of the work you do and will be your driving force. In a strong brand your mission, purpose and passion for what you do will be portrayed within all of your communication with prospects and clients. A strong brand is actually a whole lot more than just a snazzy logo. Ask yourself “what makes me or my business unique?” Define your USP. Be proud of your skills and define what the strengths and talents that make you unique are. Promote your strengths.

Be clear on your target market. A couple of years ago at Infocus the fabulous Sue Bryce delivered the memorable line “A confused mind says NO” it was in relation to sales but this couldn’t be truer than here. If you cast your net too widely you are probably sending inconsistent, mixed messages. Defining your target market and putting your efforts into a small group of the right demographic for you is a more effective use of time and money. Remain On-brand. An investment in a great graphic designer can be one of the best things you can do for your business, and a great designer will ask all the right questions to get you thinking about the message you wish to deliver, create design that promotes your message and captures prospects attention. They will also provide clear guidelines about how to remain on-brand and how to deliver a consistent message to your clients and community. Your branding should be on everything you deliver. Spend time building and maintaining relationships with your local community. Get your brand out there without expectation of anything coming back to you. It will anyway. Every contact you have with your customers should reinforce your brand values. And a brand is actually about truly caring about your business in every detail no matter how small. So the next time you are thinking about spending money on “the next coolest thing that you see” …. Check out your branding, does it project you and your business the way it should? Do you know what your brand values are? How could you enhance your branding further to motivate more prospects to do business with you? Or is it perhaps time for a revamp?

As a Member of the NZ Professional Photographers Association/NZ Institute of Professional Photography since 1967, Master of Photography, Past President & Life Member, I can’t think of anything I would rather do in the photography world than attend this celebration & catch up with many old friends. Regretfully health issues prevent me from travelling these days so please extend my Best Wishes to those who remember me & to the many new Members on whom the Institute depends so much. In these difficult trading times it’s easy to say membership is not worth the fees but remember in the words of Sir Winston Churchill “It’s not what the Institute can do for YOU, but rather what YOU can do for the Institute” I’ve always believed that one gets out of something in greater proportion to what one puts in. I have never regretted my membership & can honestly say it helped shape my career & kept it on track towards my eventual retirement. I would like to wish Members & the NZ Institute of Professional Photography every success for the future. I will think of you on the 4th, while I toast the future of “NZIPP” & it’s Members with a glass of Hawke’s Bay finest red. Cheers, Rod Ellmore

Dear Arna, Nerida, NZIPP Board, Honours Council, & everyone else involved I really wanted to thank you SO much for making this year so special, inspiring and utterly amazing. I feel so proud to be involved in such a vibrant, supportive and encouraging community who has a focus on success but also cares about dreams, art, craftsmanship and celebrating beauty. Thank-you for inviting me to be a trial judge this year. It was a real highlight of my week and I enjoyed serving you in this role. The speakers were exceptional and I have come back to my business feeling like I have been put back on track and it feels really freeing. You guys work SO hard and we all really appreciate the hours you put in and the patience you have with us. This community is very precious and I count it the most important thing in my career and business. Thank you so much- you totally nailed it this year. Lots of love, big hugs Rachel Callander

INFOCUS SPEAKER OVERVIEW Greg Heisler - The Evocative Portrait and the Language of Light By Mike Langford In the United States Greg is known as a ‘Canon Master of Light’. To us here in New Zealand, after his presentations at the Infocus Conference in Auckland, we should call him our Master of Portrait Photography, our Master of Lighting and the Master of Presenting. It’s not very often that you can be entertained by a sharp wit and at the same time educated by someone who knows their craft at the very deepest level and who is able to share that knowledge through a lecture. Greg is that someone! He taught us the importance of preparation and research in everything you do. He taught us that pre production is even more important than post production. He taught us that lighting and gesture are the keys to great portraiture. He taught us that you need to know about what you are trying to express in your photograph and to question the appropriateness of where you put your lights in order to communicate that knowledge. He was funny and at the same time thought provoking. He allowed us to peek into what it is like to photograph the most famous people on the planet. He shared with us his preparation of the lighting, sometimes with only minutes to achieve it and other times with months to prepare. He shared with us how he starts with an idea and then how he makes that idea into reality through model making, styling and lighting. Greg is truly a photographic magician! To those who missed Greg’s presentations – you missed a great one! The good news is, Greg is releasing his first book next month and you will be able to read some of the great stories he shared with us at the conference anyway. For me, Greg’s lecture and Master class, were two of the most mentally stimulating lectures I have experienced in my thirty years as a photographer. Added to that, he was there for all of us right throughout the conference. We were very fortunate to be able to continue to grow with him twenty-five years on. Thank you Greg!

INFOCUS SPEAKER OVERVIEW Rachael Hale McKenna - Why Animals! Why Babies! & the Two Together By Arna Wahl Davies Rachael took us on a journey from her beginnings in New Zealand to her current projects, and everything in between! Passionate is the one word that resonates from Rachael’s seminar. Her passion for her craft, models (in her case, mostly animals), family and life. Explaining how she had to leave behind her name / brand & previous work, her life in France and her current project New York Dogs. Seeing her explaining her images and the though process behind them, was fascinating. All in all, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room……

Trey Ratcliff - The Now and Future of Photography with the Internet By Terry Wreford Hann When I was asked to introduce Trey at conference I must confess that I did not know much about him. This despite the fact that he is very well know worldwide. So I had to do some research to bring myself up to speed. I found plenty of stuff about Trey, not all great as it seemed he had some pretty harsh critics out there for his (out there!) HDR imagery. So it was time to formulate my own opinion and arm myself with some good intro material. What followed was a journey into images and video clips that were not only enjoyable to view, but of exceptional quality and imagination, coupled with his relatively laid back informative website “Stuck in Customs” I started to realise why this guy was so successful. Trey’s conference delivery was everything that I expected and more. His take on the word of photography thought provoking and stimulating, delivered in an entertaining way and supported by stunning images from around the world. Great stuff Trey.

INFOCUS SPEAKER OVERVIEW Tony Hewitt - Looking From the Inside Out By Katherine Williams “You are you, unique in all of history” - Our last speaker for the 2013 Infocus conference programme kept us engaged and leaning forward in our seats as he spoke of the importance of our own individual vision. A Grand Master of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography Tony Hewitt challenged us to look more deeply into ourselves as photographers – We are the alchemist, the artist, the expertise and the experience. An intensely passionate speaker, Tony spoke of the effectiveness of collaboration, the importance of mutual trust and the great values of fostering relationships with clients and suppliers. Our number one currency is trust and price loses it’s value, we can outsource knowledge and expertise but we must own, nurture and leverage the most valuable link in the chain which is our relationship with our clients and we must conduct ourselves in a way which builds trust. People will pay for things valuable to them and we need to educate them as to the value. So we need to reveal the magic, tell the story and explain the trick in order for them to appreciate the value of what we do. Tony showed some stunning imagery but hooked us far beyond show and tell as we were compelled to ask ourselves to think about our own personal ‘why’ – why are you doing this? Understanding and realizing the value of our own unique vision is fundamental to success, and whether through pixel or print images that connect are key.

Karyn Flett - Simplicity - The Art of Keeping it Simple By Nicola Inglis Karyn Flett specialises in family portraiture from her daylight studio in the small Waikato town of Te Awamutu. At Infocus she spoke about keeping it simple. She spoke about her simplistic shooting style as well as her ‘keep it simple’ approach to business. She says if you do a great job and make people happy they’ll come back for years and years. Then you need to know your costs and charge enough to be profitable so that you’ll still be in business so they *can* come back for years and years.

INFOCUS SPEAKER OVERVIEW Jennifer Myers- 7 Ways to Make Your Business More Profitable To view Jennifer PowerPoint presentation, click here.

Digital Dilemma Panel Discussion By Terry Wreford Hann Thank you to Lester de Vere, Karyn Flett, Richard Linton and Alan Dove. The idea with this panel discussion was to bring out some of the controversy surrounding in the sale of digital files. There was some good discussion from the panel and the floor. However it became apparent that neither audience or panel had any real problems in this area. Some comments were made about the age of the panel and the fact that they were all seasoned photographers with established businesses, and that in retrospect it would have been good to have had some younger photographers just staring out, food for thought. We are already in the planning stage for the 2014 conference so let your thoughts be known on what you think might be a good (potential) panel discussion subject.

INFOCUS SPEAKER OVERVIEW Infocus Shoot Out By Russell Hamlet One of the fun parts of Infocus was watching three photographers work their butt off in front of everyone to come up with a self portrait. They all experienced elements of trepidation and I think the audience appreciated seeing even experienced campaigners feel a bit nervous. The creative process differs so much in us all, that even with a common theme each of three came up with something totally different. With only twenty minutes to execute, the pressure to complete was manic, and I think it was pertinent to have someone like Greg Heisler MC. His presentation of unbelievable portraiture of the most precious of subjects, (celebrities) and the sometimes few minutes he is given to get a result was mirrored in our challenge. He was tough taskmaster and kept us to the exact time. Poor Richard Linton’s mouse was on fire with thirteen seconds of post time and me in his ear going “get rid of that and that and that!!” During his little cheeky interjections, before I actually stated my goals Greg said he would do a nude. It cracked me up, because a bit after I did exactly that. I saw him later in the bar and he said “ God, I would never have done that!”. We think that the “Shoot Out“ will be a good annual event in the conference. If your chicken, stay away from your phone around that time next year otherwise you too might get the call!! No worries though you can only improve after seeing my best side.

Regional Updates Upcoming Meeting… Auckland/Northland Reg. Meeting Venue: The Crown, 69 Customs St, Auckland Central Date: September 11th, 2013 Time: 5:30pm Drinks, 6:30pm Meeting

Auckland/Northland Region August has proved to be a busy month; firstly we want to congratulate everyone who entered the Iris awards. Auckland did particularly well this year with 1 gold distinction, 11 golds, 10 silver distinctions, 35 silvers and 99 bronze awards. We want to pay a special tribute to our Auckland members who won categories. Mike Holman for winning Travel Photographer of the Year, Bianca Duimel Portrait Classic winner, Danelle Bohane for winning both highest monochrome print and the Wedding classic category and Ollie Dale for backing up and winning the Fusion award 2 years in a row. And finally we want to congratulate Harry Jansen for being a finalist in Photographer of the Year. We now wait until our next meeting where we announce the Auckland photographer of the year which as you can see will be a tightly fought race. For our August meeting we showcased our awards at the brand new studio of Jeffrey Chan (Studio 81), we where also joined by Earl Tipene from Adobe who talked the about the finer details of the Creative Cloud. Once again we had a great turnout and as always it was good to catch up and reminisce about our Iris and Infocus experiences. This months meeting is one not to be missed, we are opening this one up to all photographers or people wanting to enter the industry. We’ll be kicking things off with a mix and mingle followed by a panel discussion on the current photography industry. We have assembled a rockstar panel with 4 talented and successful photographers from different parts of the industry. And in amongst all of that we have the small matter of announcing the Auckland Photographer of the year. On a final note Tonic is now only 3 months away and we promise you this will be big. Ticket and details will be released soon, so you’ll want to get in early to reserve your spot.

Regional Updates

Wellington Region Coming back down to earth - albeit onto somewhat shaky ground in Wellington - was somewhat of a challenge after a wonderful Iris and Infocus in Auckland at the beginning of August! The weekend saw local members messaging and texting locals who couldn’t attend and filling them in on exciting news as it happened. And great news it was! The region was delighted to have finally tipped central districts from their winning streak and take out the Curtis/Poole Shield. Huge congratulations to Jason Naylor, Alicia Scott, Catherine Cattanach and Terry Wreford Hann for their stunning work in achieving this. We’re now on a roll for achieving this again next year in Wellington, but of course! Wellington region celebrated the local successes on the 20th August with a relaxed and social evening at Wellington Photographic Supplies. We had a replay of the infamous group photograph blooper, the behind the scenes ‘movie’ of Iris and the setup by everyone involved. We heard the fascinating and inspirational stories behind a number of the award-winning images of the locals, in particular the Gold’s and Silver awards from Melissa Waite, Anna Munro, Alicia Scott, Catherine Cattanach, Jason Naylor, Terry Wreford Hann, Mandi Lynn and Esther Bunning. Jason Naylor was the deserving winner of the ‘NZIPP Wellington Photographer of the Year 2013’ - and this finally sees the return of the trophy from the Wairarapa. We also congratulated the local Honours awarded: • • • • • • • •

Terry Wreford Hann - Bar to Fellow, FNZIPP Mandi Lynn: Bar to Master, MNZIPP Jason Naylor: Master MNZIPP Catherine Cattanach: Master MNZIPP Haran Sivathasan: Master MNZIPP Anna Munro: Associate ANZIPP Melissa Waite: Associate ANZIPP Brett Stanley: Associate ANZIPP

We finished the evening with Anne Gedde’s inspiring personal message to the NZIPP members. Jason Naylor receiving the trophy for ‘NZIPP Wellington Photographer of the Year 2013’ from last year’s winner Esther Bunning. Jason won the NZIPP Highest Scoring Colour Print 2013.

Regional Updates Upcoming Meeting… Canterbury/Westland Regional Meeting Venue: TBC, Christchurch Date/Time: 16 September, 2013

Canterbury/Westland Region Our August meeting found Rachel Callandar speaking to a large and very enthusiastic audience of members and guests. As everyone who knows Rachel is aware, she is a woman who embodies positive energy in everything that she does and her optimism for the future is embedded into every image that she creates for her clients. Rachel spoke about the lessons that she had learned in taking her successes in national competition and the steps and mis-steps experienced in turning artistic success into commercial success as she has grown her business to its present levels in just a few short years. We also caught up on the progress of her personal project, the Super Power Babies Project. This project has really exploded in popularity after being launched recently and you can read more about developments at the project’s website - www.superpowerbabies.com.

Images © Rachel Callander Super Power Babies

Another fairly ambitious project discussed at the recent AGM was an idea to capture portraits of the remaining RSA World War veterans for posterity. This group of soldiers is steadily dwindling in numbers and there has been discussion regarding creating a nationwide programme to create portraits of the veterans while it is still possible. Here in Christchurch we have learned that recording your history is vital, the things that you assume will be around for ever are the very things that you forget to preserve sometimes. There is a lot of planning to be planned, discussion to be discussed and agreements to be agreed upon but we’ll hopefully have some progress to report in the very near future.

There has certainly appears to have been a move towards greater online interaction for members with the advent of social media as an active communication channel. We are probably now reaching the point at which the organisation needs to develop policies regarding NZIPP brand leveraging online. With the ability for people to connect directly with each other without going through the organisation itself, how we maintain good general access to resources for all will need some thought. I’ve had comments from time to time that NZIPP has many cliques (though we tend to call them networks these days) and that newcomers can find that intimidating. Online interaction has a potential to assist with crossing these sorts of informal cliques or networks when used positively. However, misused social media could well lay the foundations for the development of exclusionary groups that would make the current internal networks and cliques seem very welcoming. Fortunately most of our members are fairly inclusive sorts of people and this sort of dire negative outcome is probably less likely than the more positive one. Like any technology, it is not the system itself that is the issue, it is entirely how it is used. How social media use might affect physical meeting attendance in the future is a matter of conjecture and research on the matter is, at best, mixed in whether we can expect such physical attendances to increase or decline. Time will tell. On the plus side, social media has allowed interactions between members who are widely separated by distance in their region. A number of Facebook groups seem to have developed in a fairly ad hoc way; all leveraging to some greater or lesser extent off the NZIPP brand. Indications continue to be in our region that social media use is at the lower end of the scale – those who use it tend to use it a fair amount, however the majority of members don’t appear to be high users at all. This may well be that we have the ability to meet face to face with our peers more readily than many other regions, or it may be the slightly different demographic that the region appears to have compared to the other regions. Whatever the explanation, it will be interesting to see how levels of local engagement with online media develops compared to the rest of the country and how social media use generally will integrate into the NZIPP toolbox over time.

SEPTEMBER 2013

Member Profile Jason Naylor What is your website: I have 2: http://wedo.net.nz/ & http://studiohopscotch.co.nz/ List some of your favourite camera gear, & at least one surprise item in your camera bag: My trusty Nikon D700 (with 198,000 shutter actuations ) & my 50mm f/1.4. Not too many surprises, although I carry far too many lenses: there’s 4 x 50mm lenses & plenty of zooms in there I never use. Oh & backups. I have backups for my backups. What is your formal/informal photography education: Nothing formal, I’m a child of the digital era & other than plenty of reading & chatting to others, am self taught through trial & error. What type of photos do you specialise in: Candid images of people having fun. Typically children, or guests at a wedding. All joy. All day. Also, trying to take the weirdest portraits that you never thought of. What do you love about the Professional photo industry: The friendships. I’ve made better friends in this industry than anywhere else I’ve worked, & I never imagined that people who are essentially competitors could be so open, honest, friendly & valued. Name some photographers who inspire you: Jeff Newsom; Sam Hurd; Fer Juaristi; Ryan Brenizer; Samm Blake; Todd Hunter McGaw. What is something that makes you grumpy: I may suffer from a little road rage when I encounter terrible drivers. Otherwise I’m pretty chilled. :) Is there a website or blog that you enjoy: My go-to blog is kottke.org - for everything awesome happening on the web. Also enjoy Scott Adam’s dilbert.com - not the cartoons, but his musings on life. Also, designtaxi.com and swiss-miss.com for design updates. Used to LOVE interviewsbycrashtaylor.com but not updated too regularly these days. Are you an avid collector of anything: Stacks & stacks of paper: envelopes; books; letters; bills; magazines; flyers. Love piling up those papers all over the place. You should see my desks. & floor. Name the last book / magazine you read: Manage Your Day-to-Day by Jocelyn K Glei (recommended) or Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon. Name one thing that not many people know about you: I had a previous career in IT working for BNZ, Sony Playstation, Xero, Silverstripe & others. I should be a geek, yet I still can’t manage my hard drives & data backup situation. Name one thing that you miss about being a kid: Hours & hours of cricket & football in the backyard after school, & afternoon tea with my grandmother. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go first & why: Antarctica. The only continent I have yet to visit, & I hate being cold, so this is quite an extraordinary answer. Followed by the deserted island below to thaw out. List 5 things you would take if deserted on an island: My wife; my daughter; my iPhone; sunscreen; & some sunglasses. Sounds pretty appealing right now actually!

Industry News Changes to Focus Plus Insurance Cover with Rothbury Insurance As discussed I said I would enclose details on the changes to the Focus Plus cover. On the 01/06/2013 we advised by Allianz that they no longer will be insuring small business in NZ and we had to find a new home for Focus Plus. I had to collate lots of information including claims etc and locations of all Photographers including Christchurch and Wellington [this was even before the recent earthquakes] and put together a submission for other Insurers. We flew to Auckland and personally presented our pitch to 5 Insurers and 3 Insurers indicated that they might be interested. Long story short we choose NZI to provide cover as they presented the best terms and rates compare to the other two and are a strong company. We put all this in place just before the 01/07 deadline. So as from 01/07/2013 as your policies fall due the will change over to the new covers. All clients will be personally contacted a month before their covers expire to review them. I do apologise to all for the lack of communication but the vital part was to make sure the scheme continued and provided excellent cover to the Photographers.

Regards Rod White Rothbury Insurance Brokers

Overview of changes to Focus Plus Insurance Cover (when your cover is up for renewal):

•

•

•

Classified Photographer / ‘jack-of-all-trades’ urgently required for busy Christchurch based studio Lightworkx Photography. Our humble, capable and dedicated super hero Chris is leaving us after near on fourteen years on the job. This means we are now super keen (and a little desperate) to hear from anyone with solid commercial advertising photography experience interested in joining us full time with long term career views in this salary based position at our Christchurch studio. Knowing your way around a Commercial/Advertising studio and all equipment likely to found in one is essential. Being computer savvy is a must and able to work flexible hours including plenty of travel as different shoots demand is essential. Our next super hero will be in charge of the studio and all equipment, will shoot (unsupervised) a variety of assignments virtually on a daily basis and will work as part of a focussed team on larger shoots in any role that may be required at that time to not only nail the shot, but make it all work for the client best we can. If your heart is racing as you read this, if you are grinning from ear to ear with excitement and if you can feel with every cell in your body that you have positive contributions to make to LWP and the greater community that is New Zealand, then we would really like to hear from you! Please take some time to write a little note and put some pictures and any other relevant material together in a simple PDF (no larger than 5MB if you can) and email it to me,(in complete confidence of course, before Friday 20 September 2013. Ideally we find someone that can start end September/early October. Email only at this stage please to diederik@ lightworkx.co.nz.
