What an exciting and positive vibe there was at this years 2013 Iris Awards & Infocus conference in Auckland.

Congratulations to all of you who entered & achieved awards this year. What a wonderful boost this will be to your marketing from now on. Be sure to maximize your achievements & to communicate your success to as many relevant people as you possibly can, as soon as you can.

To those who entered but who didn’t win awards, I hope that you were there to listen to the enlightened comments the judges shared & that you learnt from the experience. Hopefully you will enter again next year with an even better skill set, & an even better chance of achieving your award winning goals.

To those who attended the Infocus conference – what a fantastic & social experience you all had. The Key note speakers of Greg Heisler and Rachael Hale-McKenna exceeded expectations, & proved once again that those photographers who are at the top of their game are also top people who have no fear of sharing their knowledge with all who listen. Thank you Greg & Rachael.

To our other speakers - Trey Ratcliff, Tony Hewitt , Karyn Flett and Jennifer Myers thank you also for providing the delegates with information & processes that will help sustain & grow their businesses far into the future.

All shared their knowledge & experience freely & openly, & I sincerely thank you all for that.

What impressed me most about the week in Auckland was the comradeship between photographers from all photographic persuasions from all over the country. Knowledge & experience was shared by everyone to everyone, from students through to Grand Masters. It seemed everyone had one thing in mind & that was to grow & better the profession of photography, & I believe we all succeeded!

My thanks go to all of those who both entered the awards & attended the conference – you all did well.

Introduction

IRIS AWARDS 2013

NZIPP Honours Council

The 2013 Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards formed part of the NZIPP’s 75th Jubilee celebrations, & celebrate we did. With a record 1327 entries & a record 783 awards presented, this surely demonstrates the level of enthusiasm & passion people have for the professionalism of photography that ensures its future in New Zealand.

The awards this year represented the largest group of experienced judges we’ve had for many years, as well as an exceptionally high standard of work overall. While Honours had to deliver the outcome of judges declining to award an overall winner in both the Photojournalism & Wedding Album categories, it is important to remember this should not detract from the individual awards received in both categories that were well deserved & earned.

As always, the awards are an emotional rollercoaster for everyone involved, be it observer, entrant, judge or those working hard behind the scenes, & what can be gained from all this is education, inspiration & motivation. I also hope that my own personal success inspires others to either begin or continue on their own journey. A journey whose path will be as individual, as will be the measure of its success. In the words of Winston Churchill: “Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential” & “Never, never, never give up.”

The culmination of all this, as is tradition, was the Awards Gala Dinner. An opportunity that was not just about awarding the overall winners, but also about acknowledging all those who participated, & celebrating what it means to be part of the NZIPP family.

As a result of the 2013 awards, 10 new Fellows & five Bar to Fellow were presented, which included Tony Stewart & Michel Perrin receiving two bars to their Fellow. In addition, 15 Master & 10 Bar to Master, along with 22 Associates & 1 Bar to Associate were presented. It was fantastic to award two new NZIPP Grand Masters, with Richard Wood & myself being congratulated on achieving the NZIPP’s highest Honours Award.

A constant in what forms part of the annual awards, is the fantastic support the NZIPP receives from sponsors, & it’s incredibly important that as members we do everything we can to support them in return.
