2019 nikon iris professional photography awards There is no doubt that the annual NIKON Iris Professional Photography Awards is a major and significant event on New Zealand's photography calendar; The 2019 event, hosted by the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP), marks thirty-six years of celebrating vision, creativity and innovation by professional photographers from both New Zealand and overseas. The NIKON Iris Awards provides professional photographers with a platform where they can be challenged, as well as being a forum where the profession of photography establishes new standards and values. It is also where photographic boundaries are pushed and extended, through innovation and technical excellence. Over three amazing days in June, the NZIPP Honours Team brought together panels of top national and international judges to view and evaluate entries across fourteen different photographic genres: Book, Commercial, Creative, Documentary, Family, Illustrative, Landscape, Nature, Portrait In-Camera Artistry, Portrait Creative, Student, Travel, Wedding InCamera Artistry and Wedding Creative. Judges were blown away by the standard presented to them. Words such as: “mastery", "exciting", "vision", "evocative", "original", "finese", "creative", "contemporary", "emotive" and "heart" were superlatives all used by judges across the broad range of the imagery seen. The NIKON Iris Awards exhibition that ran alongside the judging truly represented an increased standard of award winning images. In conjunction with the NIKON Iris Awards, again held in Shed 6 on the Wellington Queens Wharf Waterfront, was the ILFORD Exposure Event. This year saw the event renamed and restructured. Ilford EXPOSURE

provided photography enthusiasts from all walks and stages of life with amazing learning opportunities, with demonstrations, photo shooting bays, photo walks and presenters; attendees ranging from school age through to veterans. The Ilford EXPOSURE PRO event, specifically targeted New Zealand (and international) photography professionals, showcased a diverse range of workshops, aimed at inspiration and education, from International and national presenters. Alongside all three events was the vibrant and fantastic trades exhibition, offering a great opportunity for attendees to build relationships with those who support and supply the New Zealand consumer and professional photographic industry. The finale to these five incredible days was a super charged Gala Dinner, also held on the Waterfront at Shed 6. The night was about acknowledging those who are the backbone to the photography industry (the industry's sponsors and suppliers) as well as celebrating the achievements of every entrant, as entering the NIKON Iris Awards is an achievement in itself, entrants challenged to learn and grow year on year, as both a photographer and business owner. Enjoy this Special Awards Edition of the NZIPP PRO Report, and celebrate alongside us the wonderful visual feast of innovation, creativity and mastery of craft on the pages that follow.

James White, along with Hugh Perry and Barry Woods, founded the NZIPP Honours System, with the first awards being held in 1983. In addition, James held the position of Chairman of Honours during the late 1970's, and that of NZIPP President between 1981-1982. The history of this award commenced following a trip that James, and his wife Judy White, made in 1995 to the USA. The trip was to assess the Awards processes being used at the time by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). The self-funded information gathering trip was to determine if they could be applied to the newly proposed NZ Professional Photography Association's AGFA Awards (NZIPP was previously known as NZPPA). Not long after this James passed away and in consultation with Judy White, in 1996 the NZIPP Board created the "James White Scholarship", in memory of James's dedication to the future well being of the Institute. 2016, marked the 20th anniversary of James' passing and this provided an opportunity for NZIPP, in consultation with the White family, to review the award. What resulted is the James White Memorial Award, that is presented to an NZIPP Member who is the highest scoring, first time entrant, in any of the open categories of the Iris Professional Photography Awards. The winner is determined from an aggregate of their top four highest scoring print entries. The trophy, commissioned and donated by the White family, holds the medals and awards that James himself received over his years of service to the Institute and his own pursuit of excellence in photography.

Rachel Callander NZIPP Master of Photography II
Ian Poole was a man who has left a huge mark and legacy not just in the New Zealand awards, but also in Australia. He was passionate about every facet of photography and in 2012 was awarded Honorary Member of the NZIPP. A professional photographer for over 50 years, and member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), Ian was also an exhibitor, lecturer, mentor, curriculum developer, writer, curator, judge, presenter and assessor of new members to the AIPP. Ian was an incredibly giving man, a man who brought so much to the development of judging across both sides of the Tasman, also judging at the Iris Awards for 10 years. Commencing in 2018, the Ian Poole Memorial award, created in partnership with his wife Louise Jameson and the NZIPP, is a way of furthering Ian’s commitment to judging by recognising excellence and the significant role judges play in the awards system. The recipient is determined by audience votes, recognising a person, who demonstrates outstanding qualities and skills as a judge at the annual Iris Photography Awards event. The trophy presented to the recipient, is a restored camera of Ian's, and contains a hidden photograph of Ian judging.

Janay Johnstone was a wife, a mother, a photographer, and member of the NZIPP. Commencing her working life as a graphic designer, Janay's newborn photography career started in 2015, launching Tee-Jay Photography following the birth of her own son and watching him being photographed as a newborn. She immediately recognised the importance of capturing those precious moments that pass so quickly. A talented photographer, Janay was a bubbly and vivacious person with a heart of gold, and was also described as an absolute baby whisperer. During her career as a photographer, Janay became part of the Heartfelt volunteer network, giving herself and her precious time to other families, visting hospitals to photograph babies who were seriously ill or had died during birth. Janay and her own unborn baby girl sadly passed away together on March 6, 2019. This award is has been established in conjunction with Jany's husband, Mark, and family, and the NZIPP, to honour Janay. The winner is determined by a panel of five judges, in a judge off of the top three highest scoring Newborn images.

2019 NZIPP Distinction awards The annual Iris Awards programme is a forum aimed at supporting ongoing professional development for professional photographers. This programme is where photographers are challenged to grow and master their photographic capabilities, which in turn supports raising the standard of professional photography in New Zealand. As part of this, NZIPP members, and members of reciprocal organisations (including the Australian Institute of Professional Photography) earn merit points on awards won at the annual awards event. For Accredited members, achieving awards and merit points are a pathway to being awarded NZIPP Distinctions - that of Associate, Master of Photography and Grand Master of Photography. These distinctions offer recognition to those in the Institute who demonstrate sustained high levels of photographic practice, through vision, creativity, innovation and technical excellence.

NZIPP Silver spool award Harry Janssen Awarded to a person who has provided a significant and valuable contribution and service to the NZ Institute of Professional Photography.
NZIPP Gold Award Chris Traill Awarded to a person who has given long, unselfish and outstanding service to the Institute and its members that has had an effect for the good of the Institute.
NZIPP Honorary Member James Carnie Having already been awarded as an Honorary Member in 2007, the NZIPP wished to further acknowledge James' continued and significant assistance to the Institute on a number of matters over the past year.
NZIPP Life Member award Russell Hamlet Presented to a member who, within a period of at least a twenty year membership, has actively served and promoted the Institute. Such a member will have probably served in an elected office with some distinction
NZIPP Honorary Fellow Award Esther Bunning The NZIPP's top honour and awarded sparingly, this is for providing an outstanding contribution to the image of professional photography within either the NZIPP or the community at large.
