Dear Members Firstly, I would like to thank the East Coast Coo’s for the wonderful AGM in June. The attention to detail for at the dinner was amazing, and on Sunday we had a great tour followed by a delicious lunch.

Thank you to all the members who voted for me.

Unfortunately, on the 26 June, I suffered a stroke and spent the following ten weeks in hospital. I am now at home, going to physio twice a week and making good progress.

After much consideration regarding my position the CS Council, I felt it was the best decision to resign.

For me, the next eight months will be in recovery mode and I believe if you are on the Council you need to give it your best focus.

I would like to thank the members who have sent flow ers, cards and emails and those who have telephoned, all with lovely messages, your support and best wishes have been very much appreciated.

I am also very grateful to all those who have performed my duties over the last four months.

New animal welfare code released In June 2010, a new Code for Animal Welfare was released by the Minister for Agriculture David Carter. This code details the fundamental obligations of caring for animals, and sets minimum standards for compliance in situations ranging from food and water, husbandry, stockmanship and handling, body condition scoring, shelter and health, injury or disease.

Hello Everyone. My name is Adam Cowie and I tan animal skins for a living, everything from rabbits through to cow hides. I have been in the tanning industry for 25 years and are fully qualified in tanning technology and the dyeing of leather. Just over a year ago I decided to go out on my own and started up my own busi ness  Animal Skin Tanning Services Ltd based in Invercargill. I offer a tanning service and also buy raw skins and hides to proc ess and on sell myself. So it is with much delight that I offer my services to you as Highland Cattle breeders. I have done quite a few Highland hides over the past year and have made the follow ing observations. irstly they look best with either their full sum mer coat or their full winter coat. In between seasons they are a bit scruffy and patchy with long and short hair areas over the skin.

As a floor rug they look best if the hair is of even length across the whole hide. Secondly I have found in some skins there are a lot of its  Lice eggs imbedded at the base of the hair. This is very difficult to remove as there can be thousands of them. I would suggest that if you were thinking of getting an animal skin tanned then check it for lice and if practical try and rid it of the lice before killing. Once tanned these animals look great as a floor rug and will last for a long time. They will however require a regular vacuuming as the longer the hair is the more of a dust collector they can become. I do coat the hair with a silicon solu tion to help prevent dust sticking to the hair fibres and allow for easy removal with the vacuum.

To prepare the hide it is best to do the following; 1. Cool it down with cold water immediately after flaying.

2. Trim off as much excess meat and fat as you can . It is these areas that bacteria love and will colonise first.

3. Either salt the hide, making sure you use plenty spread evenly across the flesh side. then roll it up and put it in a cool dry place until you can get it to me.

Or roll it up, put it in a bag and freeze it until you can get it to me. . I have done skins sent frozen from the orth Island and they have arrived to me here in Invercargill still frozen a couple of days later. So please don't think it is too much hassle to get them to me. Most freight companies only take a couple of days to get skins to me from the other end of the country.

5. I will then put the hide into work and if there are any prob lems with hair slip due to bacterial degradation then I will con tact you and discuss the options. I must say though that I have not had any problems with cattle hides as long as they have been prepared as written above. It takes me about 6 8 weeks to process the hides through and then payment is re quired and I send them back to you as a finished floor rug or whatever you wish to use it for.
