The Canterbury West Coast Wood Council held its second ever awards night on Friday, August 2 at the stunning Te Pae Convention Centre in Christchurch. It was a sell-out event with 420 guests attending from all parts of the industry.
CWCWC is unique in that its membership welcomes all those from across the supply chain, including nursery growers, forestry companies, contractors, distributors, sawmillers, timber retailers, local port businesses and councils
Opening the night was Glenn Moir, chair of CWCWC, who highlighted the importance of forestry to our local regions and the 2000 plus jobs it creates He attributed this mostly to the benefits of growing Pinus radiata.
Local MP for Selwyn Hon Nicola Grigg and Minister of State for Trade, Minister for Women, and Associate Minister of Agriculture spoke of the improvements the new government aims to make for the industry Also in a video presentation, Forestry Minister Todd McClay talked on current forestry initiatives and promoting economic growth in the regions
The Canterbury West Coast Forestry Awards showcases the exceptional skills of the local workforce and acknowledges those businesses that are accomplishing notable achievements.
This year there were 40 nominations received that went onto be judged by John Hawkins Dr Elizabeth Heeg and Mark Grover.
The judges were impressed by the high standard of nominations Ten winners were selected for each of the award categories.
The commitment and passion that each winner has shown in their jobs is a great example to follow.
It was terrific to see them receiving acknowledgment from their peers at the ceremony for all the work they do
To wow the crowds MC Jackie Clarke was back to perform her magic on stage. She provided a lively show and had the audience laughing throughout the evening.
Special mentions were also given to all the sponsors that contributed significantly towards the night making the event possible. The Canterbury West Coast Wood Council was thrilled to see the people of the regions coming together for this very important occasion.

Forestry Excellence Winner: Nathan Sew Hoy, Central Forestry Services Ltd
Nathan Sew Hoy’s remarkable dedication and contributions to Central Forestry Services (CFS) over the past 28 years exemplify the highest standards of professionalism and commitment in the forestry industry. Nathan began his career with CFS at the age of 17, fresh out of training school. Over nearly three decades, CFS has witnessed his transformation from a typical country teenager into a dedicated and accomplished professional. Nathan now leads a 15-man silviculture/firefighting crew based out of Waimate.
One of Nathan’s significant contributions to CFS has been his role in ushering the company into a new era of professionalism, particularly through health and safety and training. His relentless advocacy for better working conditions for his team has significantly improved our workplace environment
Nathan’s dedication to these causes has made him the face of CFS, embodying our company’s values and mission with pride.

Desiree started with C3 at the Otiria rail yard in Northland over 20 years ago, back when the business was known as Owens Services Since then,
Desiree has developed her marshalling and export skills through many different roles on her climb up through the company, including a few years at Rayonier Matariki Forests overseeing the nationwide vessel loading program.
Desiree was appointed as Branch Manager of C3 Lyttelton in mid 2018, and since then
has turned the operation around through investing in her people and bringing her ‘Can do’ attitude to the Canterbury log export industry.

Outstanding Environmental Management
Winner: Ryan Lee, Lee Logging
Ryan Lee is an experienced logger of 19 years He started off working for his father, Steve Lee, during his school holidays, and now runs the crew himself For Ryan environmental compliance and performance are key factors when he is planning and problem solving within logging operations
Ryan is always seeking ways he can reduce environmental risk, and he is always willing to provide solutions to issues that arise.
He is a creative thinker who goes above and beyond to ensure the best for the environment Ryan demonstrates environmental leadership within his business on a daily basis, which creates a positive example for his crew mates that work alongside him in the forest He always takes the time to teach good environmental practice to new staff in his crew
Outstanding Contribution to the Forestry Industry Winner: Derrick Parry, Rangiora Nursery Limited
Derrick Parry has given a lifetime’s commitment to forest nursery production in New Zealand. Starting out as a Science Technician at New Zealand’s Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Rotorua in the late 1960’s Derrick could see that there was a huge potential for improving growth and timber properties in New Zealand’s forests. During the 1970’s FRI put a lot of effort into the breeding traits of New Zealand’s No.1 forest tree - Pinus radiata.
Improving growth, straightness, branching, disease resistance, and timber characteristics. He then went on to establish his own forestry nursery businesses in South Canterbury, and for the last 37 years at Rangiora. Derrick’s passion for improvement focused on changing nursery production processes to capture and deliver this genetic gain to the forests.
Derrick has a vast knowledge when it comes to growing trees, and he has a passion for educating others
Over the years logging within the Rayonier Matariki estate, Lee Logging have been faced with numerous environmentally
challenging harvesting blocks. Be it steep terrain, wet ground conditions, or sensitive waterways and receiving environments, they always produce a great environmental outcome.
Much of this can be attributed to Ryan and his leadership
Propagating millions of pine treestocks from cuttings taken off up to 35ha of mother plants. Plants with known breeding selections His tree stocks are of the highest quality and he likes to provide the best service to his customers throughout the lower half of the South Island.
Rangiora Nursery currently grows 8.5 million seedlings and cuttings annually and employs 8 permanent staff An additional 28 seasonal staff are recruited each winter to assist with lifting, grading and dispatching approximately 150,000 tree stocks each day. www.rangioranursery.co.nz

Winner Aaron Tahuhu, SRS New Zealand Limited
Aaron was unemployed when he started with SRS 2 ½ years ago
From day one he showed good promise with his positive attitude and willingness to learn. He has shown nothing other than enthusiasm for his job, which he clearly enjoys Aaron works in the reprocessing department where he sets and operates the four-sider planer machine.
He has just completed the Solid WoodTimber Machining Level 3 course through Competenz He will soon be starting his level
4 course. Aaron willingly shares his new knowledge with others so the whole team can grow and improve For this reason, his peers and the SRS management team hold Aaron in high esteem as a valued employee. Aaron’s employer, SRS, originally Shands Road Sawmills Ltd was founded in 1964 The company now currently employs 137 people at its Rolleston site. SRS supplies pallets, bins and cable drums to many major domestic customers and exports kiln dried
timber to Asia.
The SRS reprocessing and manufacturing facilities at Rolleston include cut to length machines, timber machining, resawing, robot assembly of pallets, and manual building for pallets, bins, cable drums and specialised wooden packaging.
Aaron has a great work ethic and is a quick learner
All the knowledge and skills acquired during his training are fully adopted and implemented with amazing enthusiasm.
This has improved the quality of timber machining through our 4 sider, and improved setup times.
Aaron also treats the machine as his own, ensuring it is well maintained, kept clean and tidy with knives maintained for maximum efficiency

Outstanding Health & Safety Management
Winner: Ebony Hillman, Westco Lumber
Ebony Hillman has been an integral part of Westco Lumber’s Health and Safety team since becoming an employee in 2008, firstly as a H&S representative and then over the last 5 years as the Company’s H&S team leader She has been influential in developing the organisation’s safety culture while being a mentor to other reps, assisting them to obtain H&S qualifications
Ebony is also a senior leader in the company and has taken on team leadership roles when required to cover vacancies.
Ebony has been proactive in the H&S field outside the company by helping set-up meetings for H&S professionals on the West Coast and presenting on the Duty Holder Review process at national WorkSafe forums
She is also a key member of the ACC and Westco’s Recover at Work trial, implementing systems to improve outcomes for employees participating at work while recovering from both work and non-work injuries.

Ben Millar works at Mitchell Bros Sawmilling and Timber Processing, which was established in 1946 and is now currently owned and operated by 4th generation members of the Mitchell Family Ben came to Mitchell Bros as a school leaver in Feb 2017. In that time, he has proven to be a natural leader with a willingness to learn. He has taken every opportunity presented to him.
He takes a huge amount of pride in the product he is producing, and his presentation sets an example for others to follow.

Ben has completed the Timber Treatment Level 2 and 3, and Timber Drying Level 3 both through Competenz/Woodwise. For someone who is only 25 years old he has achieved a lot in a small amount of time.
