Bernard R. Ackerman Scholarship This scholarship is given to students who display exceptional ability and promise in the areas of research, advocacy, and activism.

Kailyn Lynch (HDSI)*: Kailyn is a vigilant and attentive student who has committed to conduct research and create programs for the benefit of the underserved. She is the primary investigator on the Redefining Our Womanhood project which features a collaborative approach to address the needs and desired resources for young-adult Black women. Kailyn is also finishing up two studies that target gendered pathways to treatment for Afro-Caribbean women and girls and therapist’s perceptions of the needs of Afro-Caribbean Clients. She continues to add meaningful insight and enlighten others with her knowledge and commitment to address issues of diversity.

Katelyn Fletcher (DEV): Katelyn has demonstrated a commitment and dedication in advocating for disadvantaged students. Before NYU, Katelyn taught elementary and middle school students from low-income communities to help close the academic achievement gap. Currently, her research includes using video data to curate rich descriptive information to address unanswered questions about infants’ learning experiences at home. Through her work, Katelyn aims to affect real change to infants’ early life experiences by essential questions about equity and access.

Jill Gandhi (DEV): Jill is an exceptional student that has extended her expertise on many different research projects. Jill has also developed expertise in survey methodology and advanced statistical approaches to education and school choice data on Pamela Morris’ and Elise Cappella’s Universal Pre-K project. On top of her great scholarly work, she champions the needs of vulnerable populations and tests innovative approaches to supporting families and children in homes, preschools and school settings. Outside of NYU, she also plays a key activist and advocacy role for the LGBTQ community. Gandhi is precisely the kind of student who epitomizes the values of this award.

Sarah Rosenbach (PSI): Sarah is a stellar student who has an impressive record of academic excellence, advocacy and research. Her area of interest is LGBTQ youth populations and is making unique contributions to support for this particularly vulnerable population. Sarah has significantly contributed to an NIH funded Massachusetts statewide study of LGBTQ and other youth. Her advocacy extends to her role as a board member for the New York City chapter of GLSEN, a non-profit organization that works to ensure safe schools for SGM youth. Sarah’s commitment to nexus of research, school leadership, and advocacy for LGBTQ youth makes her an ideal candidate for this award.

Raymond Weiss Endowment Scholarship This scholarship is given to students who demonstrate a commitment to innovation through supporting research, education, and intervention projects to solve social problems.

Danielle Florentin (CNGU)*: Danielle is deeply dedicated to scholarly rigor and innovation through her research and intervention work as they relate to solving challenges faced by children coming from diverse backgrounds. Danielle’s’ internship works with students incorporating the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) National Model. Her focus is on the academic, social, emotional, and career development of students and works directly with school-age students to address educational and social problems which display her dedication to her program of study and allows her to engage more deeply in the research process.

Nicole Howard (CNGU)*: Nicole has been an extraordinary student, and her passion is to improve the lives of students and create a supportive learning environment. While maintaining a graduate course load, she is a full-time secondary educator, volleyball, basketball and soccer coach. Nicole effectively uses her counseling skills acquired at NYU to help her students. She is continuously trying to improve her community’s quality of life by committing to the students, athletes, and parents that she serves. During class, Nicole is always energetic and engaging while challenging her peers to go further and providing support to those in need.

Linda & Arthur Carter Family Scholarship This scholarship is given to graduate students who are conducting empirical research related to child development.

Anna Bennet (DEV): Anna is a bright student that always displays outstanding work within her program. Her work mainly focuses on the processes of gender development across multiple contexts, cultures, and developmental periods. Along with Dr. Niobe Way and her peers, Anna is working on a series of papers examining how masculine ideology shapes parenting and child development. As a great scholar, she is comfortable working across multiple methods and is an active and critical part of the research team. Anna’s work on gender is cutting edge and innovative and will, without a doubt, make a considerable contribution in the field of child development.

Annie Brandes-Aitken (DEV): Annie is a dedicated scholar who has continuously demonstrated her impressive productivity and commitment to child development research. She is also a recipient of the prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation (NSF) which supports graduate students in STEM-related fields. During her time at NYU, she has taken the lead on several critical questions within the Stress, Home Environment, Language and Learning (SHELL) study and mentor to many research assistants in Dr. Clancy Blair’s lab. Not only is Annie wonderful to work with but is a dependable, hard-working and a genuine team player.

Amrita Ramakrishnan (CNPS): Amrita has the makings of a strong clinician and scientist, and her track record of research-related publications in press; presentations at national and international conferences, clinical and teaching experiences and advocacy speaks strongly to this. Her research interests focus on cognitive and behavioral variables and how these interact and affect outcomes for youth. She is currently studying the impact of organizational skills training, and evidence-based intervention for youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) on core symptoms of the disorder. Her various activities at NYU have given her the foundation to be a strong researcher, clinician, and advocate focused on children’s mental health.

Alex Watford (PSI): Alex has been involved in numerous research projects since matriculating into the doctoral training program in the PSI program, all of which ultimately have optimal child development as a focus. He was a central player in the research efforts of Dr. Elise Cappella on a project which group-randomized pilot trial of a coaching in cooperative learning program being implemented in publicly-funded after-school programs. Alex’s own central research interest lies in the area of understanding how children learn race across various social contexts and also worked on examining methodological issues in evaluating educational issues in developing countries.

Steinhardt Endowed Scholarships

This scholarship is given to students whose work displays interdisciplinary approaches to solving applied problems.

Brianda Hickey (APUG)*: Brianda has strong leadership and research experience and is one of the most committed, and motivated students in the APUG program. She has been working with the RISE research team for more than a year and has progressed above and beyond her data collector role to take on additional responsibilities that include working very closely with the ROSES Project Director. The ROSES study includes girls who are at risk of or who are already involved in the juvenile justice system. Presently, Brianda also serves as a member of the referral and screening team. Her impressive work ethic and leadership make her a deserving recipient for Talia Schrager (APUG): Throughout her time in the APUG program, Talia has demonstrated a strong interest in working with vulnerable populations and understanding the intersection between nutrition, health disparities, and psychology along with public health. She currently serves as a research assistant at the Socioeconomic Evaluation of Dietary Decisions (SEED) Lab here at NYU. Her career goals include serving underserved populations in regards to health care and mental health accessibility. Talia is also a dedicated scholar and has proven her commitment to solving applied problems.

Outstanding Research Contribution This award is given to students whose research demonstrates excellence and originality.

Rachel Lim (APUG)*: Rachel is an exemplary student in the APUG Honors Program, as well as a stellar junior researcher who is truly passionate about and committed to the research process.

Rachel’s work on her Honors thesis, in which she explores the relationship between teachers’ instructional support and children’s academic outcomes, highlights her commitment to learning and growing as a researcher. Rachel has been meticulous about the full research process, from carefully designing her project, to painstakingly combing the literature, developing a robust coding scheme and single-handedly coding her data, to running her analyses, all to ensure that her findings will be of practical value to researchers, educators, and policymakers.

Kat Adams (DEV): Kat is an exceptionally strong candidate for this award based on her excellent academic standing and her outstanding promise as a young scholar. Kat has not only done well in her courses and comps, but she has also pursued advanced developmental training opportunities in our IES-PIRT program as well as in other labs. Kat’s ideas are sharp, her understanding of and use of research methods are strong, and her contributions are already intellectually and methodologically of great value. Her work is likely to have significant implications for developmental psychology, early education and the design of educational technology. Kat is an excellent candidate for this prestigious award.

Esther Burson (PSI): Three things make Esa’s research truly outstanding: her theoretical depth and rigor, her innovative, interdisciplinary lens and her rigorous, mixed-methods approach. These have resulted in an impressive track record of productivity, including multiple first- and co-authored publications and more manuscripts in the pipeline. Extending social psychological theory to real-world conditions, Esa used nationally-representative data paired with experimental data to examine how members of different marginalized groups in the U.S. feel towards each other and policies designed to support the other. She integrates these perspectives in a sophisticated conceptual paper and tests these ideas empirically using mixed-methods.

Taymy Caso (CNPS): Taymy is well versed in both quantitative and qualitative methodologies and possesses sophisticated knowledge of the research process working collaboratively in the community. While the research topics listed on her CV are diverse, they coalesce around understanding psychological phenomena within a cultural context. Taymy has formed a research team studying Transgender Identity Formation Study (TIFS). Her research team has presented findings at the National Latina/o Psychological Association Convention (2018), the American Psychological Association Convention (2018) and Winter Roundtable (2019). Her work will constitute a significant contribution to the understanding of gender identity formation of transgender, gender non-conforming, genderqueer, gender fluid, androgynous, and non-binary individuals.

Distinguished Service Award This award is given to graduating undergraduate students for dedication and service to the Department of Applied Psychology.

Brianda Hickey (APUG)*: Since transferring to the Applied Psychology Undergraduate Program, Brianda has dedicated herself to the department, committing her time and effort to enrich the experience for all students within the APUG community. Brianda has been an APUG Club E-board member since 2017, where she began as the Psych Liaison and is now serving as Vice President and Treasurer. As a leader within the club, Brianda has been instrumental in organizing events, including two on gender issues—one on women in leadership and another on non-binary transgender equity. In addition, Brianda was instrumental in creating sustainable efforts for APUG Club. Brianda has also devoted her time to assisting research teams, including TIFS and RISE.

Felix Warburg Memorial Award This scholarship is given to students who have demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to the Dept.

Sarah Gouriche (APUG): Sarah has been a committed member of the APUG community since her freshman year. She was first appointed as Promotional Chair in Steinhardt’s Undergraduate Student Government and now serves as the President of the Sophomore Class where she plans monthly programs for other Steinhardt Sophomores. Her leadership roles also include Director of Advocacy at Carlyle Court’s Embassy, Director of Outreach for APUG Club and a dedicated research associate under the Center for Research on Culture, Development, and Education.

Sarah’s contributions to the department demonstrate extraordinary character and integrity.

Jessica Chimoff (CNGU)*: Jessica is a thoughtful and highly motivated student who has been a great asset to her program and the department. She showcases her exemplary counseling skills at her internship at LaGuardia High School where she works a drama therapy intern. At NYU, Jessica is involved in the Steinhardt Counseling Association and serves on the executive board as the Graduate Student Organization representative and as a mentor to a first-year student.

As part of this position, she also attends events such as Admitted Students Days where she shares her experience and insight to prospective students. She represents the AP community in all aspects with charisma and dedication.

Jessica Rickel (HDSI)*: Jessica is a diligent student that displays academic excellence and leadership within the department. Jessica assisted with the launch of the ISLAND lab where she currently holds a research assistant position. Her active participation transcends to her externship where Jessica took the initiative to develop a shared set of goals for herself and other externs. In her role as president of the Human Development and Intervention Graduate Society, she aims to create an academic and social community amongst the HDSI students by supporting first-year students. Jessica is not only an impressive scholar but also a devoted member of her program.

Esther Sin (DEV): Esther is an outstanding student who is interested in researching the relationship between sociocultural contexts and key developmental outcomes for youth and families. With that passion, she is a research assistant in two labs where she works on several projects. On top of her research activities, Esther has been committed to mentoring students in both labs and works with Dr. Sirin in organizing the weekly Developmental colloquium. Esther continues to be a great role model and resource to this program and her fellow doctoral students.

Bernard Katz Award

This award is given to students for their helpfulness, congeniality, and dedication to their program and peers.

Alexa Montemayor (APUG)*: Within the Undergraduate Program, Alexa Montemayor has been an active member of the community in various capacities, ranging from being an editor to helping with research on girls in the legal system. Alexa began serving as an Editor-in-Training for OPUS in 2018, then moved up to Editor-in-Chief this past Fall. As an editor, Alexa works meticulously to review and edit pieces accepted for publication, as well as hold events for all Applied Psychology students needing assistance with the editing of their papers. Alexa has also been a ROSES research team member, having worked her way up from being a data collector and a member of the referral team to a data analyst, a position which allows her to work closely with her supervisors to analyze interviews.

Bernard Katz Award (cont.)

This award is given to students for their helpfulness, congeniality, and dedication to their program and peers.

Leanne Castillo (CNGU)*: Leanne has been an active leader in the MA programs in counseling.

Her academic performance and commitment to the school counseling profession are exceptional. Leanne is currently serving as the Vice-President of the Student Counseling Association (SCA) where she is very involved in all programming. Leanne has played a vital role in putting together many events such as the CPCE information Panel and Internship Panel which have been crucial for students to connect with alum and gain insight to help navigate program requirements. Leanne has also played an important role in facilitating the SCA peer mentorship program, which has been a beneficial program for first-year students adjusting to graduate school and the diverse aspects of the academic and clinical training features of the program.

Brian Spitzer (DEV): Brian was an outstanding graduate assistant and students praised him for going beyond the expected--he met students outside his office hours, on the phone, and held extra sessions before exams. Brian regularly gathers groups of graduate students to help one another write, share knowledge of statistics, and encourage his peers. He goes out of his way to help younger RAs in the labs where he works, to understand research practices, how to organize articles, how to apply to graduate programs. Brian works to create a warm environment for those around him echoing the friendliness and interest in people that Bernie Katz showed.

Distinguished Teaching Award This award is given to a Ph.D. student who demonstrates excellence in the area of teaching.

Corianna Sichel (CNPS): Corianna is highly deserving of this award. She has taught every year since beginning doctoral study in the Dept of Applied Psychology in 2014, and, impressively, receives high praise from undergraduate and master’s students alike. She is the rare instructor who is routinely sought to teach across didactic, clinical, seminar style, lecture-based required courses as well as elective courses. Throughout her teaching experience, Corianna has received consistently strong, glowing reviews. Students find Corianna to be supportive, knowledgeable, and have repeatedly praised her for her dedication to their learning. Students also find her curiosity and enthusiasm for her subject matter to be infectious, and her willingness to engage with complex, difficult topics in the classroom to be superlative. Indeed, multiple students have described the Corianna’s classes as among the highlights of their time at NYU.

Adrian Levy Scholarship This scholarship is given to help support Master’s Counseling students who have committed to working with individuals with disabilities (e.g., physical, developmental, cognitive).

Pedrum Mardan (CNGU): Pedrum is an intelligent and enthusiastic individual that goes above and beyond the requirements of the program. His impressive work includes developing a peer-mediated intervention to increase school engagement and interactions between students and individuals diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder. Pedrum is also independently working on a presentation on the role of the school counselor at the New York State School Counselor Association (NYSSCA) conference and serves on a research team addressing the needs of transgender and gender nonconforming youth. He is dedicated to students who are disadvantaged due to lack of resources and possess marginalized identities in today’s society.

Emily Thulier (CMHW)*: Emily is not only an exceptional student and counselor-in-training, but an outstanding presence and asset to her graduate program, and to the greater community. Emily works as a special education teacher for nearly a decade where she has been committed to serving students with a variety of physical, cognitive, and developmental needs. One of her many notable achievements includes co-founding EPIC Academy where she continues to provide educational services to students with special needs, even as she pursues her degree at NYU.

Adrian Levy Scholarship (cont.)

This scholarship is given to help support Master’s Counseling students who have committed to working with individuals with disabilities (e.g., physical, developmental, cognitive).

Soroya Warren-Pinheiro (CNGU)*: Soroya is an empathetic and dynamic student who has also been working as a lead paraprofessional within a special education setting. She does not shy away from taking risks, asking questions, self-disclosing when appropriate, and helping to enrich her peers’ understanding of the K-12 school environment through stories of her work in the New York City Department of Education. As an excellent student, she always strikes a critical balance between the integration of theory and literature, her own personal and professional experiences, and practical application. Soroya embodies the purpose of this award and has been a great asset to this department.

Gilbert M. Trachtman Fellowship Fund This scholarship is given to students for their contributions to serving children, parents, and teachers and being agents of change.

Davynte Pannell (CMHW)*: Davynte has dedicated his career to working with those children who come from oppressed communities or have suffered from any lack of resources within their schools and their families. He works as an artist, art teacher, art therapist and counselor in his community with a passion for empowering young people in urban environments. He has used his background in art and psychology to work with children who are hurting emotionally and provide clarity and hope through therapeutic services. Moreover, he is acutely sensitive to cultural differences and their effect on communication with youth. Davynte’s social justice clinical work makes him an excellent candidate for this award.

Aubrey Rose Pagan (CMHW)*: Aubrey is an eager and thoughtful student who distinguishes herself in class by the quality of her participation and engagement. She is currently an intern at Schoharie County Community Services where most clients are underprivileged and burdened with physiological needs and psychological issues. Aubrey manages most of her cases through individual counseling, group counseling, and home visits while focusing on providing parents with child development knowledge and parenting support. She has been continuously working on her goal to produce a more productive and supportive community, both on individual and systemic levels.

The Phillip J. Zlatchin Memorial Award This award, established in honor of Professor Zlatchin, a member of the faculty from 1947 to 1959, will be awarded to graduate students for their contributions to improving the life conditions of vulnerable individuals or communities.

Patricia Fahmy (CMHW)*: Patricia conducts rigorous and innovative research that aligns with this awards goal to improve life conditions of vulnerable individuals and communities. She currently contributes to two research labs. One examines the influence of trauma and institutionalized inequity on the outcomes of juvenile justice-involved youth while the other investigates mental health effects of oppression, which includes violence, racism, discrimination, and trauma. This knowledge drives Patricia in her goal of becoming a scientist and practitioner focused on social justice. She is truly an exceptional, high achieving student who is dedicated to serving families, children, and communities who are marginalized, vulnerable and disadvantaged.

Victoria Dahl (CNPS): Tori’s current and past research interests are focused on working with the vulnerable population of children with mental health disorders. She has been a research assistant in the Families and Children Experiencing Success (FACES) Lab under the supervision of Dr. Chacko and also had an externship placement at the Harlem Children’s Zone. With her current research project, she is designing and conducting an open clinical trial evaluating the effects of a mindfulness-based parenting program. Her passion for helping improve the lives and functioning of the children is displayed in all her projects making her a highly motivated and hardworking student.

Outstanding School Counseling Service This award is given in recognition of outstanding work in support of the goals of school counselors: the promotion of academic, career, personal/social development, equity and success for all students.

Jessica Chimoff (CNGU)*: Jessica has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the role of a school counselor. She interns at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts and Littleton Elementary School. At the elementary level, Jessica implemented and facilitated classroom guidance lessons that increase students’ awareness of diversity, and the inequality people faced based on their identity. She conducts workshops on diversity, inequality, and social change for fourth and fifth graders, where the importance of addressing prejudice, racism, sexism, and marginalization to create a school culture that promotes action. Jessica also works with first-generation students who have struggled in navigating the college application process.

Outstanding Clinical Service This award is given to students who demonstrate outstanding skills in the area of clinical practice.

Pedrum Mardan (CNGU)*: Pedrum works at the NYU Opportunity Program engaging with the various services provided to HEOP/CSTEP programs. In this role he meets with potential students, parents, school counselors and vital stakeholders to inform them of the various components of the admission process. Pedrum also provides remote services to Taiwan Springbok Transpolo Group regarding college admissions and application processes to U.S. boarding schools. He completed a practicum at the High school for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering working to implement a nationally recognized school-wide college preparatory program that embodies all aspects of college admissions and application processes. He also counseled students re: academic, motivational, and socioemotional needs.

Victoria Dahl (CNPS)*: Tori has extensive clinical experiences in various settings with ethnically diverse clients across the age range. Throughout her experiences at the Harlem Children’s Zone, NYU Center for Counseling and Community Wellbeing, Gouverneur Hospital Behavioral Health Clinic and most recently at the NYU Child Study Center, Tori has been noted by her clinical supervisors as a student-trainee with “exemplary clinical skills.” Several supervisors have commented on her clinical acumen in case conceptualization, treatment planning, and treatment refinement. She is a stand-out student-clinician. Moreover, Tori’s research focuses on the development and evaluation of clinical interventions within both schools and with families Across these initiatives, Tori has continued to demonstrate the clinical skills necessary to engage and support teachers and parents for the benefit of the children she is helping.

Excellence in Fieldwork This award is given to an undergraduate student in recognition of their outstanding commitment, engagement, and growth at their fieldwork site.

Suni Shah (APUG)*: Suni Shah is a hard-working, diligent student who demonstrates an exemplary commitment to her field site, The Door. Truly passionate about The Door’s mission, Suni approaches her volunteer work with maturity, professionalism and utmost dedication. Given the stellar nature of her work, Suni’s supervisors had her take a leadership role and supervise new intake counselors, as well as conduct more difficult intakes that came in. This semester, her responsibilities have grown to include helping facilitate psychoeducation groups and planning and implementing wellness events. She also pushes herself to go beyond her prescribed tasks to try and help the young people in any way she can. She empathizes with the young people she meets and uses a strengths-based approach to assist them. Perhaps most impressively, she is reflective about her experiences, demonstrating maturity, insight, and flexibility in thought.

Social Justice Award This award is for students for their contribution to improving the life conditions of vulnerable individuals or communities.

Khirad Siddiqui (APUG)*: Khirad is deeply committed to advocacy work for girls who are at-risk of being involved in the juvenile justice system. In Dr. Shabnam Javdani’s research team, Khirad assessed various ways participants can advocate for girls between the ages of 11 and 17.

Additionally, for this past spring semester of her senior year, she recently was promoted to Peer Supervisor at ROSES. Khirad is also in the APUG Honors Program, and she is currently working on her thesis exploring the meaningful differences in the various legal charges that parents file allegations for, as compared to non-parent complainants. She is also interested in how the gender of the youth moderates this relationship, as well as the language in the petitions.

Chaveli De Leon (CMHW)*: Chaveli serves as the treasurer for Project Sunshine, an organization that reaches out to provide recreational activities for children who are engaged in in-patient and out-patient units across various NYC hospitals. In addition, she is interning at the New York Psychotherapy and Counseling Services working to engage members of low-income communities in the South Bronx in various forms of psychotherapy. She provides case management services and actively works to identify resources that provide free meals, welfare services, and recreational services for this community. Her advocacy and contributions to vulnerable communities make her a worthy recipient of this award.

Monroe Stein Memorial Fellowship This award is given to a graduate student who can demonstrate a need as well as a commitment to his/her career to bettering the lives of children.

Arielle Young (CMHW)*: Arielle came to the NYU graduate counseling program with diverse work experience in settings with marginalized communities and with a dedication to implementing social justice in her practice as a lawyer and counselor in training. She has been committed to providing legal services to organizations across her home state of Louisiana by working with youth of color who were charged as adults for “violent crimes.” Arielle is now working with Southeast Advocates for Family Empowerment (SAFE) with survivors of domestic violence where she uses both her legal and counseling backgrounds to assist survivors and families. She has not only dedicated her adult career but her life to service to marginalized communities of color explicitly focusing on empowering the lives of children.

Sophia Hwang (PSI): Sophia’s commitment to bettering the lives of adolescent children in greatest need is one of her many defining characteristics. Previously, as a teacher in impoverished urban schools and as a researcher for PolicyLab at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) she engaged in research-practice-policy translations across multiple public service sectors to inform and improve the education and mental health of youth. Here at NYU, Sophia went far beyond the requirements of the practicum requirement of the PSI program. She is an accomplished and talented junior scholar who has dedicated much of her work and volunteer life to supporting young people, through both research and practice.
