When the Housing Guide came out last year, I remember pouring over it with my prospective roommate: grabbing a stack, ripping them up and ordering the dorms in various ways. We made pro and con lists, analyzed the possible room choices and Google Mapped the distances to our classes. Room tours, upperclassmen and online pictures became our obsessions as we used every research tool to choose the perfect abode for the next two semesters.

From your precursory glance at the dorm list to when you decide on your final two halls, I hope the 2017 Housing Guide is the first and last place you look. We curated and crafted this issue with a candid view of the buildings — from the hidden gems to unexpected quirks, we hope our deep research and extensive conversations with residents encapsulate what it is truly like to live in each of these dorms.

UNIVERSITY HALL $15,884

– The nickname Glamercy perfectly encapsulates this dorm: large windows, a dishwasher, hotel bathroom lighting and even walk-in closets. In addition to the luxurious and spacious dorms, the building features laundry on most floors, a fitness center and private study rooms in the basement, a computer lab with printing on the fourth floor, additional laundry in the basement and an expansive second floor lounge.

However, even with these great

– Carlyle Court houses about 740 upperclassmen, primarily sophomores, in its high-traffic location. The residence consists of three towers, which enclose a courtyard where residents can relax or hold events. Rooms are either four-person, two-bedroom suites or two-person studios — each with a kitchen, bathroom and common space.

One of Carlyle’s primary draws is its unparalleled location directly on Union Square, which is a major gathering point for all types of events and a great spot for peoplewatching. Carlyle residents can shop at nearby retailers such as Barnes and Noble, Forever 21 and American Eagle, join the latest political protest or pick up fresh produce at the Union Square Greenmarket just in front of the building. This dorm is perfect for the adventurer with so many subway stations right outside its door, but depending on which side

amenities, many rooms have no overhead lighting, and the beds are non-ergonomic: they cannot be adjusted for height, and most bed risers do not fit the bed frame’s leg shape.

The surrounding area of Third Avenue and 23rd Street — a large intersection comparable to the Fifth Avenue traffic — boasts an assortment of locales for college students, since this dorm is adjacent to both Baruch College and the School of Visual Arts. However, most things in the area are pricey, and the nearby nightlife is more

of the building you land on, your space might be noisy deep into the night.

Although not the most modern of NYU’s dorms, Carlyle’s suites are comfortable and easy to live in. The four-person suites are divided into A and B rooms: the B room has a door that brings privacy for its residents, while the A room is larger but is directly open to the common space and kitchen. The three towers also include a study lounge, television lounge, large practice rooms with pianos, a ballet bar and full-length mirrors. The dorm boasts a welcoming atmosphere with a close-knit community, due primarily to programs and events run by its active residence hall government, engaged resident assistants and live-in faculty members.

– University Hall, on 110 E. 14th St., houses 600 undergraduate students of all years in suites of shared rooms. One of the few apartment-style dorms available to first-year students, the suites include a bathroom, shared space and small kitchen.

Bedrooms provide a walk-in closet, but it is sometimes inconveniently sized, depending on each layout. The rooms themselves are spacious with large windows.

The building offers a couple of dining options — Burger Studio in the basement and Dunkin’ Donuts outside the lobby — and both locations allow students to use their meal plans. UHall

also features a laundry room, television lounge, a music practice room with a piano, small conference room with a printing station and study lounge. Just past the lobby is a branch of the University Learning Center, NYU’s peer tutoring center.

UHall is located in the bustling heart of Union Square, where students have access to many shopping and dining experiences — Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are even located within one block of the building. And to top it all off, Joe’s Pizza offers $2.75 slices only half a block away, providing a cheap and easy late-night food option.

Nothing is really that nearby Gramercy, but its relatively uptown location compared to the rest of campus provides plenty of things to do with a short, bearable trek: it is only a few blocks from the East River, Central Park is a short run away and multiple art hubs are within a mile of this residence hall.

Coral Tower is an upperclassmen residence hall at 14th Street and Third Avenue — right at the cross section of a transportation hub. Located right on the cusp of Union Square, this prime spot makes all subway travel extremely easy, and at this major intersection, many NYU food hotspots are located a few steps outside: Vanessa’s Dumplings, Joe’s Pizza and Halal Guys.

While it is loud and bustling outside, Coral Tower is home to a quieter and more reserved atmosphere for students to be a part of and enjoy. Efficiency rooms in suites comprise the majority of spaces in the hall, but all the rooms have satisfying closet spaces.

The rooms within this building are a hit or miss, since some rooms are small and cramped while others are large and spacious — even some efficiency rooms are pretty sizable. The common areas also vary in size, but they are usually generous with space as well. Across all room sizes, the kitchens in each suite come equipped with a fridge and full stove with various stages of functionality. Out of the four burners on the stovetops, sometimes only one or two work.

Coral is a medium-sized dorm with 13 floors, and the building includes a variety of unique amenities, including a dance room and an ATM. It also comes with a laundry room, television lounge and study spaces in the basement.

SENIOR HOUsE 15

With its exposed-brick walls, modern furniture and high windows, Senior House looks more like a West Village industrial-style apartment building than a college dorm. The wooden floors, metal staircases and spacious rooms add to its charm.

Located on West 13th Street, Senior House is a special-interest housing option available exclusively to undergraduate seniors. This nine-story residence hall is divided into North and South towers, with house shared bedrooms in shared suites and two-person studios.

Every set-up comes with its own kitchen, bathroom and common area. The dorm also offers two study lounges, two laundry rooms and a penthouse lounge with a communal kitchen.

Senior House’s only major shortcoming is that to enter or exit the North Tower, one must journey through tunnels in the basement.

Because the dorm is located in a residential West Village neighborhood, there is an abundance of restaurants and stores in the area. When you don’t feel like cooking, there’s a Chipotle on the same block. Murray’s Bagels, 16 Handles and Rite Aid are also located right on Sixth Avenue, and Union Square is within walking distance of the building.

Senior House is a great choice for last-year students looking to increase their autonomy and fulfill their dreams of living in the West Village without relinquishing the luxury of living in NYU dorms.

– Despite its misleading name, Alumni Hall is open to approximately 450 upperclassmen and graduate residents.

Alumni is only minutes away from both the Astor Place subway station and its neighboring Eighth and Broadway stop.

But for students who prefer above ground transportation, the free NYU Shuttle stops at 13th Street and Third Avenue.

With a relatively desirable location — only a 10-15 minute walk to Washington Square Park — in this area, residents also have an abundance of East Asian restaurants, cute coffee shops and exposure to the looming silhouette of the allusive Astor Place green man.

Another perk of Alumni for those who prefer a little alone time is that all the rooms are singles. All residents will have rooms to themselves, but they share a suite with one to three others living in single bedrooms. The bedrooms come equipped with a bed, closet, dresser and desk, while the adjacent common area includes a table and chairs, as well as basic kitchen appliances. After a recent renovation, Alumni has two updated lounges, which include a television and pool table.

However, the bursts of color brought to Alumni with the renovations don’t take away from the bleak atmosphere of the white-walled building. For those who value practicality over appearance and solitude over cohabitating, Alumni is a great option.

Located in the West Village just a short walk away from the Hudson River, Greenwich Hall has the best of both worlds — an amazing location and a great deal of amenities.

The building is complete with a laundry room, study room, bike racks and practice rooms.

Although the individual room sizes are nothing to brag about, the common areas in the suites are fairly large. Each suite is complete with a full kitchen, couches and a dining table — these furnishings give the impression of an actual apartment rather than a dorm space. And due to a building quirk, there are maid services that clean the common area, bathroom and kitchen at a scheduled time each week. The only catch of living here is that the number of occupants in each room varies, so you could have three suitemates or seven.

The strong selection of restaurants and nightlife in the neighborhood makes up for the residence hall’s distance from the dining halls. The large population of elderly residents create a calm and quiet atmosphere.

Greenwich Hall is perfect for a student who wants a tranquil residential neighborhood that’s still within walking distance of Washington Square Park.

GREEN HOUSE

– Although Green House at Seventh Street dormitory is one of the lesser known dorms on campus, it is the most unique — its approximately 90 residents are immensely committed to environmental sustainability.

There are no elevators to take students to and from their spacious four-person, apartment-style rooms, and the dorm is covered in reminders to recycle, shower less and reduce overall usage, making it a dream come true for tree-hugging students. Also, since this is the smallest dorm on campus, residents consistently brag about its sense of community.

Each room features a refrigerator, couches, tables and chairs. There is also a recently renovated shared kitchen in

the basement along with a game room, study lounge and laundry room. Green House is located on St. Mark’s Place, making it only a 10-minute walk from classes and a five-minute walk from Third North Courtyard Cafe. This is a perfect East Village location to access coffee shops, bars and restaurants while surrounded by a passionate community.

However, remember that minimalism is key while moving into these dorms, since everything you bring must be carried upstairs. But this could serve as a great time to meet people while reinforcing old friendships with the team effort of moving in and out of the rooms

– Lafayette Hall tends to get an unfair reputation as an undesirable location, but it’s a really spacious building in an incredible area. The dorm sits smack on the edges of several fun neighborhoods — Tribeca, Chinatown, SoHo, Lower East Side and the City Hall district. It’s even just a few short blocks from Little Italy. The variety of access to neighborhood hotspots and subway lines is unparalleled by other NYU dorms.

What’s more, it’s a very large building with really high ceilings and comfortablysized bedrooms. The study lounge on the first floor is huge with lots of comfortable

Located in the dynamic East Village on the corner of Second Street and Bowery, 300 upperclassman residents fill the 12 floors of this dorm. There are single, double and triple studios available, and all setups come with a private bathroom. However, unlike most upperclassman dorms with fully-equipped kitchens, Second Street only has a kitchenette. These rooms are generally a hit or miss due to their odd shapes, but the studio-only arrangement provides residents more privacy.

Second Street also houses a large communal lounge that includes a television and pool table, as well as music and dance practice rooms, an art studio, a study room, a computer lab and bike storage —

perfect for those who don’t want to make the considerable but still manageable trek to campus. No NYU Shuttle stops near Second Street, since this is one of the closer upperclassmen dorms.

The surrounding areas of Little Italy, the Lower East Side, Soho and Chinatown make Second Street one of the most vibrantly placed dorms, and this prime location ensures you never go hungry — a good thing, since the closest dining halls are at Kimmel or Third North, both of which are about a 10-minute walk away. For the adventurous and those who don’t mind whimsical spaces, something that most residents find endearing after a while, Second Street could be for you.

– Palladium is one of the most sought-after dorms at NYU — its location right on Union Square makes for an easy, 15-minute walk to campus, as well as quick access to the Union Square subway station. All rooms are apartment style, meaning they come with kitchens, which are equipped with refrigerators, stovetops and a double-basin sink.

The majority of the rooms are suites comprised of two double rooms. Bedrooms and kitchens are on the smaller side, but with a walk-in closet, comfortable living space and larger bathrooms, Palladium rooms have their fair share of perks.

Some singles are available in suites, but they are few and far between.

Other benefits of living in Palladium include neighboring the city’s most popular Trader Joe’s, which makes grocery shopping criminally easy and cost-effective. Plus, with a bevy of college student-friendly restaurants at your doorstep such as Joe’s Pizza and Chipotle, this is the ideal dorm for food-loving, cost-conscious students.

– Named after the street it resides on, Broome Street Residential College is close enough to smell the pizza in Little Italy while also near the trendy shops in SoHo. But for those who simply need a midnight snack or coffee fill, there are plenty of nearby options. Taasha Deli, a 24-hour store, sits directly next to Broome, and looking just a few steps further, the highly Instagrammable coffee shop Happy Bones and salad chain Sweetgreen provide satisfying options for any appetite.

Broome offers apartment-style rooms, and students have the option of a shared room or a private room in a suite. The suites offer a kitchen, two bathrooms and a common area with couches. Within the building, almost every floor is equipped with a laundry room, and there are spacious lounges

throughout the building.

It has an upscale yet simplistic, oldschool look, which creates a vibrant community — fitting, since Broome is home to the residential college. This program is designed to bring students closer to each other, the faculty and the neighborhood. The college facilitates events inside and outside the building to mingle residents and ensure they know their surroundings.

Broome is ideal for independent upperclassmen looking to immerse themselves in the city while still actively participating in the NYU community. The slightly longer walk to campus lets students see a bit of the city every single day and gives residents more resources to engage with outside the university.

CLARK street

– Clark Street, located in the stunning Brooklyn Heights neighborhood, is the recently renovated bigger brother of Othmer Hall. Its reputation precedes itself, and Clark resembles — perhaps more than any other NYU residence hall — a hotel. Offering a diverse selection of housing options including low-cost triples and suites, every arrangement in the hall is furnished with a television, refrigerator and microwave. The rooms are also well-lit by the natural sunlight that simmers in, providing a relaxing and inspiring atmosphere that is perfect for students to destress in after a long day.

Although Clark lacks individual kitchens in each room and instead offers a communal kitchen, the residence hall is well-equipped with other amenities: a library, pool tables, flat-screen televisions and even a movie screening room. Along with the year-round programming facilitated by resident assistants and the student government, Clark possesses a genuinely communal ambiance perfect for making new connections with fellow students and staff.

With a five-minute walk to the subway, relatively new facilities and a supportive staff setting, Clark is ideal for any undergraduate looking for a comfortable living situation alongside a rich, edifying community.

– Othmer Hall, located in downtown Brooklyn, is the 18-story residence hall primarily for Tandon School of Engineering students. Home to over 400 residents in both traditional and apartment style suites, Othmer offers spacious and cozy rooms for mechanical engineers and mathematicians alike.

Each suite provides a refrigerator and microwave, while also offering shared amenities throughout the building, such as 13 community lounges with televisions and comfortable sofas. The building also boasts its own laundry room, but most notable of this dorm is its community atmosphere pervasive in this residence hall. The 12 resident assistants come together to facilitate events — be it social, academic or professional — for students throughout the year.

Leading up to the residence hall is a beautiful mini-promenade, with trees lining both sides. After a snowfall, the area is reminiscent of picturesque winter greeting cards, and on warmer days, it is a great place to meander or study. To accommodate for the notoriously rigorous curriculum that is engineering, Starbucks and other dining options are also just a five minute walk from the residence hall.

Washington Square Village is perfectly located for students who want easy access to Washington Square Park.

Only minutes away from Bobst Library, this residence hall is home to 250 graduate students, NYU faculty, staff and other community members.

The majority of the airy, white-walled apartments are two-person studios that come equipped with a kitchen and a bathroom. Residents will also be provided with the typical extra-long twin bed, desk, desk chair and dresser.

Washington Square Village provides students a number of other amenities, such as a colorful study lounge that is accompanied by a communal kitchen, courtyard, television, computers and laundry rooms.

Its central location means that residents can sleep a bit longer with their quick access to academic buildings near Washington Square Park, and the area is also well-populated with cafes, restaurants and stores on nearby MacDougal Street. University Place, Houston Street and Bleecker Street also offer many options for food, fun and everything in between. Washington Square Village offers students their own haven basically on campus with a more mature community surrounding them, and this is the perfect environment for cultivating scholarly works.

– Graduate students awarded the Graduate School of Arts and Science McCracken scholarship will enjoy living in an apartment in Stuyvesant Town. With laundry facilities inside the building and plenty of restaurants and bars in the area, students can find most of their necessities nearby.

Home to about 250 students, this residence hall is relatively smaller than other halls. Each resident has access to a kitchen and their own private room within a suite and each room also includes a refrigerator and microwave. The hall is also eco-friendly with recycling in the building.

The neighboring farmers market also provides a composting option.

not provided with cable, internet or telephone services. However, there are cafes where students can concentrate on work.

Stuyvesant Town has a quiet vibe compared to the Washington Square Park and Union Square areas, with families and dogs flooding the parks and playgrounds nearby. It is located by the East River, so residents can easily go for a run or ride their bikes along the river on nice days.

Though the surrounding area is family-oriented, plenty of other NYU students live nearby, so residents can conveniently easily meet up with their peers.

home stay – If you’re going abroad, you’ll hear it said time and time again: living with a host family is the best way to immerse yourself in a different culture while learning a new language. For the past month, I’ve lived in Madrid with an older couple and their 29-yearold daughter, and my constant interactions with them in Spanish have improved my language skills and understanding of Spanish life in a way that no class ever could.

The biggest misconception about homestays is that they somehow limit students’ independence — and it does, at times, feel like I’m living at home with my parents again — but host families understand that we’re students and that we tend to spend much of our time outside of the house. There’s no curfew, and I’m free to come and go in the apartment as I please. The only requirement is to be at home for dinner, or to notify my señora if I make other plans.

There are, however, certain cultural differences that require adjustments. For me, the hardest thing has been explaining my sleep habits: every single time I sleep in past 10 a.m., my señora asks me, with a hint of judgment, whether I’ve been up late “hablando con mi novio,” when in reality I just have a bizarre ability to sleep for more than 12 hours a night. Her dismay at my habit of being late and skipping breakfast on weekdays has taught me to set my alarm a little bit earlier to make time to eat in the morning — something I would rarely do otherwise.

Some homestays offer kitchen rights, which allow students to purchase their own food and cook their own meals at the cost of interaction with the host family. In all honesty though, the biggest advantage of living in a homestay — aside from the contact with a foreign language and culture — is the food. I opted for the breakfast and one hot meal option, so in the morning I have coffee and toast and at night whatever my señora has spent the day cooking.

Everyone’s host family is different, but my señora prepares the most elaborate meals. There are always two main dishes, which could be anything from paella to tortilla Española to meatballs, as well as a salad, bread and a clementine for dessert. I used to skip meals in New York due to my lack of both interest and cooking skills, but here I eagerly await dinnertime because the food never disappoints.

In addition to cooking, my señora also does my laundry, and a maid washes my sheets and cleans my room every week — not a bad deal at all. Toiletries like hand soap and toilet paper are provided.

The only real disadvantage to living in a homestay, in my opinion, is the isolation from the rest of study abroad students who tend to live in dorms. I’m lucky enough to live a 10-minute walk from the NYU Madrid residence hall, so I meet up with my friends there all the time. And I’m satisfied knowing that this experience, above all others, will push my Spanish to near perfection.

There are so many fun and creative ways to decorate a dorm room, but depending on which school you’re in, you may favor certain decorations over others.

While command hooks and tape are advised against, divots in the wall from these decorations can be easily fixed by stuffing toilet paper in the holes and covering them with white-out. These walls are quickly mended, but there’s no simple homesickness remedy, so making your new dorm feel cozy and personal is a good start.

Every actor needs someone to practice lines with, and what better person than yourself ? Create a cute and colorful mirror by spicing up the frame with simple decorations like fake flowers, gemstones and polaroid photos. Most of these can be easily found at craft stores, and there is no limit to what looks good in this typically under-utilized corner of your room. Your daily OOTD’s will be cuter than ever.

Tap into your inner Gallatin hipster by decorating your dorm room with some succulents. The Union Square Greenmarket sells mini potted plants at affordable prices, and they can be easily transferred into stemless wine glasses for a fresh and bright look. These plants are super lowmaintenance and can be placed anywhere in your room, from your bathroom counter to the extra space on your bookshelf.

If you’re someone who can’t wait for a semester abroad, try decorating your room with a large flag. This quick and simple decoration can represent anywhere from your home country to the place you’ve always dreamed of visiting. If you’re worried about the fire hazard, you can always invest in a globe instead — that way, you check off all the countries at once, while providing a great bookend to the endless pile of reading you have to finish by Sunday.

Looking for a way to start transitioning into the adult world? A fish is a perfect companion to learn how to take care of someone other than yourself at a low price without too much of a time commitment. Beta fish are beautiful, can liven up any dorm room and provide great conversation starters. Just make sure you remember to feed it every day!

Your guitar deserves a bigger stage than the black case you keep shoved under your bed. Instrument stands are easy to build and inexpensive on sites like Amazon. Keeping instruments on display adds a welcoming and fun aesthetic to your room without too much effort, and it gives you an excuse to break out the tunes whenever you have an extra minute.

With all of the technology in your room, figuring out which cords connect to which outlets can be overwhelming and timeconsuming. Luckily, there’s an easy fix.

Take leftover bread tags — the small plastic squares that come on loaves of bread — and hook them onto the base of your cords, labelling them accordingly. That way, you’ll never unplug the wrong cord — it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

While CAS boasts a wide variety of majors, there’s one decoration that almost everyone can agree on: photos.

Use decorated or themed picture frames to house your favorite snaps of the people you love. IKEA offers a wide variety of inexpensive frames, sure to fit any personality type. It will definitely be worth the smile you’ll earn from your mom the next time she visits.
