FemmeCare drive highlights health issue

Tisch junior Gloria Zingales spent this Saturday afternoon in Washington Square Park collecting donations for homeless women and girls — but instead of asking for food or spare change, her drive called for boxes of pads and tampons, basic feminine hygiene products that some cannot afford.

Zingales began to think about the issue when she saw videos from #TheHomelessPeriod, a movement started by a group of women in London. After reaching out to NYU to organize an event and receiving no response, she turned to Facebook and created the FemmeCare Drive, inviting all of her friends to donate feminine hygiene products. She also asked companies that make reusable products like menstrual cups or absorbent underwear to donate and get involved. Lunacups, a company that creates menstrual cups for women, sponsored the drive and sent donations.

“One of the reasons I find it to be so important is that not only are we providing tampons to home-

less women, but we’re also kind of working to break this taboo around periods, cycles and menstruation,” Zingales said. “It’s something that’s really healthy and normal, and it’s frustrating to feel like it’s wrong and we shouldn’t talk about it.”

With a pink poster that made a bloody tampon beautiful, and well-known Drake songs blasting on speakers, the FemmeCare Drive on Saturday became the open, conversational space that Zingales envisioned. Those who who dropped off donations stayed to talk for a few minutes, asking about how the event started or commenting on the growing piles of boxes.

Gallatin freshman and supermodel Karlie Kloss, currently a freshman in Gallatin, also stopped by to take a picture.

Emma Chikow, a student at the New School, spoke about #TheHomelessPeriod not as a women’s issue, but as a basic health care issue.

Zingales also stressed the importance of encouraging male involvement, even posting humorous instructions titled “How To Donate To FemmeCare If You Are A Man And Afraid Of Tampons” to her Facebook event page. Etienne Cipriani, an employee at Columbia University who volunteered at the drive, noticed that more men were stepping up to help the cause.

Group hosts week in honor of veterans

The NYU Military Alliance will be spearheading the first Veteran’s Appreciation Week to coincide with Veterans Day this Wednesday. The student veteran group has prepared a full week of activities designed to commemorate former troops for their service and foster community among veterans at the university.

The week includes meeting NYU veterans at various lunches, a film screening of “Project 22” and an opportunity for veterans to meet Google representatives and learn about career opportunities with the Internet giant. The highlight of the week will be marching in the Veterans Day parade.

NYU Military Alliance President and Steinhardt senior Nina Vizcarrondo said the group aims to welcome any military alliance member to NYU and provide any resources they would need. Vizcarrondo also said a goal is to connect the student veteran groups across different NYU schools to embody the principle of unity, as veterans are taught at basic training.

“The driving force behind the Veterans Appreciation Week are the number of veterans that NYU has and the number of attendees that have been increasing rapidly at our events,” Vizcarrondo said.

In addition to commemorating veterans through university groups, NYU also provides programs to retired servicemen and women to expand their career opportunities. The Tandon School of Engineering created the Veteran Entrepreneur Training program to cater to former military personnel with a passion for entrepreneurship who are looking to transition out of the armed forces and into the growing technology industry.

The Stern School of Business has also launched its Military Veterans Club to support its community of retired troops and offer scholarships and financial aid to veterans in its MBA program. NYU Langone’s Steven and Alexandra Cohen Veterans Center has also established a veteran’s mental health research facility.

CAS junior Omri Bezalel is an Israeli veteran and part of the

NYU Veterans Writing Workshop.

Bezalel said the concept of a Veterans Week is strange to him because in Israel almost everyone is a veteran.

“It’s always strange to hear about this relationship between veterans and civilians and this kind of disconnect,” Bezalel said.

“But I mean, it doesn’t seem to be a bad thing. It looks like it’s a good thing to have Veterans week and Military Alliance.”

CAS sophomore Intesar Janjua said he joined the Reserve Officer’s Training Corps program because he wanted to devote his energy and time into something that i believe in and that is a global force for change.

“Honoring veterans at NYU would mean a lot to me because of the sacrifice and dedication that they have given in order for us to live the way we do,” Janjua said. “It would also be cool to see NYU honoring all those who have served and knowing that the University is still supportive of what the US military does for our daily lives.”

nations at all times. She hopes to continue the movement by joining other groups with similar ideas and partnering with more sponsors. In order to keep people thinking about the health of homeless women and girls, Zingales plans to host events that will continue donations. More importantly, these events will continue the much-needed conversation about feminine healthcare.

Consent law wording confuses

NYU Law students gathered for a silent vigil on Friday to show solidarity with Palestinian citizens in their ongoing struggle with Israel. The vigil, held in the NYU Law’s Vanderbilt Courtyard, also aimed to bring attention to Palestinian suffering and the Law School’s alleged pro-Israeli sympathies.

Students brought large, black signs, handed out flyers and posed for pictures. The event was sponsored by Law Students for Justice in Palestine, one of NYU Law’s newest student advocacy groups, according to Law student Colinford Mattis.

“Law Students for Justice in Palestine was one of several new student groups created last year. It tries to open a dialogue about the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict,” Mattis said. “LSJP does advocacy work and strives to raise awareness.”

Salmah Rizvi, another NYU Law student, said the demonstration tried to bring attention to the current issues.

“Today’s event was prompted by recent activities on Palestinian land, in particular the extrajudicial killings of Palestinian citizens,” Rizvi said.

In addition, said Law student Amith Gupta, the effort to raise awareness was further spurred by a series of emails exchanged between law students.

“I called for vigils like this after the aggressive response I and other students received for forwarding emails from the organization New York City Students for Justice in Palestine,” Gupta said. “The forwarded email showed solidarity with the Palestinians during their recent uprising against the Israeli occupation.”

Gupta also pointed to NYU Law’s adoption of Thane Rosenbaum’s Forum on Law, Culture & Society in 2014 as evidence of the school’s animosity toward Palestinians. In a July 2014 opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal,

Rosenbaum suggested that all citizens of the Gaza Strip could be considered combatants.

“On some basic level, you forfeit your right to be called civilians when you freely elect members of a terrorist organization as statesmen, invite them to dinner with blood on their hands and allow them to set up shop in your living room as their base of operations,” Thane wrote at the time. “At that point you begin to look a lot more like conscripted soldiers than innocent civilians.

And you have wittingly made yourself targets.”

Risvi agreed that he felt the presence of a pro-Israeli bias on campus, but saw promise in the student organizations.

“At times it has been a struggle for pro-Palestinian advocates on campus to speak out in a meaningful way,” Risvi said. “However, the administration has been supportive. We are one of very few law schools with a group like Law Students for Justice in Palestine.”

Gupta also noted pro-Israeli sentiment on campus and suggested that it occasionally veered into hostility.

“The community here can engage in a culture of dehumanization of Palestinians and others in the Middle East,” Gupta said.

“Pro-Palestinian students can be called anti-semitic or branded terrorist sympathizers.

This language can have a chilling effect on students’ willingness to participate in discussions and express themselves. By speaking out we are doing our best to address it.”

Mattis also said organizations like LSJP could have positive effects on community discourse.

“I am interested in supporting activities that can bring a voice to the marginalized,” Mattis said.

New York state’s new affirmative consent law, also known as Yes Means Yes, defines legal parameters that college students must meet before engaging in sexual activities.

However, Joe Cohn, the legislative and policy director of Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, explained how the ambiguous wording not only makes it more difficult for those accused of sexual assault to defend themselves, but also makes it easier for people to accuse others of sexual assault. He does not believe this is beneficial for either party.

“It is a well-intentioned piece of legislation but sadly missed the mark of actually addressing the issue of campus sexual assault,” Cohn said. “It converts a lot of the consensual and lawful sex into unlawful sex.”

Cohn said the law is a well-intentioned piece of legislation that falls short of addressing sexual assault at universities, turning a lot of consensual sex into unlawful sex. He brought up an example of two people who had been in a relationship as a reason for the law’s shortcomings.

“Imagine two people in a relationship for a long time, and they have had sex many times before,” Cohn said. “If one of the people touches the other one the way the two have touched a thousand times before and is told on that

occasion the partner is uninterested, if the first person stops immediately, they already committed sexual assault, because they didn’t get permission upfront, which is just not how most people engage in a relationship and sexual activity.”

FIRE realized how vague the wording was, so after the legislature passed, the company released a video interviewing NYU students about their understanding of it.

“We wanted to go to NYU because we wanted to see if students were on the same page about what would be acceptable under the law and what isn’t acceptable under the law,” Cohn said.

“From a lawyer’s perspective, when you’re sitting at a desk, you can see how that the question of sexual activity between students could be disputed.”

On camera, students discussed college relationships and attempted to define the vague language in the legislation, such as sexual activity and consent.

GSAS student Peter Digennaro said he believes that relationships are conscious decisions, and this statute lacks consideration of those factors.

“In the legislation, there is nonverbal and verbal consent,” Digennaro said. “This is where I think, does that mean the absence of non-consent or does it mean in active consent?”

New York already had specific legislation detailing how those who are unconscious or inebri-

ated express consent. Some are worried that this policy blurs blurs the definition of consent.

Amanda Matthews, a graduate student in the Wagner School of Public Service, said each sexual encounter should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

“If I am already in a situation with a partner or someone that I’m seeing and I’m alluding to being OK with the progression of physical contact, I take it as consent,” Matthews said. “But the second I say no and you continue, I consider that sexual assault.”

What’s causing even more of a disconnect is that this legislation only applies to students attending college. So a 22-year-old college student and a 22-year-old professional must adhere to different rules governing their sexual activity. Cohn said sexual behavior should not be a robotic asking of permission between each individual touch anyways.

“The new rules can be interpreted in multiple ways, and now, not everyone can know what’s allowed and what’s not allowed,” Cohn said. “That’s the exact, legal definition of vague especially when we deal with the issue of campus sex assault and even process sexual assault and all of its contacts as one of the cornerstone pieces of our mission.”

Larceny On Oct. 30 a student reported that the day before at noon, he left his bike secured to the railing in front of Shimkin Hall and discovered his bike wheels missing when he returned on the morning of the 30th.

Police notification was declined.

On Oct. 31 a student reported that on Oct. 29 he secured his bike to the railing in front of Shimkin Hall with two locks and when he returned at 1 a.m. on the 30th the bike and locks were missing. Police were not notified.

On Nov. 2 a student reported that on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. he left his laptop in the lower level of Weinstein Hall and discovered it missing when he returned half an hour later. NYPD was not notified.

On Nov. 4 a student reported that two days prior at 6:30 p.m. he had

secured his bike outside Schwartz Plaza and discovered it gone when he returned two hours later. A report was filed with the NYPD. On Nov. 5 at 1:15 p.m. a student reported that she secured her bike to the rack on University Place at 12:15 p.m. and discovered the bike frame and back tire missing when she returned at 1:15 p.m. Police notification was declined.

On Nov. 6 at 3:43 a.m. a security officer reported that at 3:38 a.m. three unidentified males entered the Palladium lobby and stole a rug. The report is still under investigation.

Controlled Substance On Nov. 1 at 11:31 p.m. Public Safety in Lafayette Residence Hall responded to a report of a controlled substance and recovered some marijuana.

Simple Assault On Oct. 30 in Brittany a student reported he was punched multiple times in the face by his roommate after an argument. Police were not notified.

Alum stars in gritty, emotional ‘White’

By DARIA BUTLER Staff Writer

The drama film “James White” tells an abnormally raw and gritty version of the coming-ofage story. Written and directed by Tisch alumnus Josh Mond, “James White” follows the title character (Christopher Abbot), a troubled young man in his twenties struggling through life in New York City. As his cancer-stricken mother’s (Cynthia Nixon) health rapidly deteriorates, James White is forced to grow up and take care of her while also trying to keep his own life afloat.

The film unfolds choppily — the majority of scenes are very short, and Mond moves from one to the next without much of a transition at all, much less a smooth one.

This, in turn, reflects the turbulent, impulsive behavior of the protagonist as he drinks, smokes and parties his way through existence. The film is shot in such a raw, intimate way that it appears as though we are truly getting a glimpse into someone’s dysfunctional life. Regular head-on closeups of James reveal his inner strug-

After the film begins in a druginduced montage, James soon learns that his estranged father has passed away. The film then flashes through short bursts of action as he spirals in and out of fits of anger to reckless nights of partying and various hookups.

Clearly his worst enemy, James is also a victim. As much of an aimless train wreck James is, Christopher Abbott’s performance still entices the audience to root for him.

As for Nixon, the seasoned actress gives a heartbreaking performance as James’ erratic mother who is battling stage four cancer.

Her illness and instability throw James into a major loop, as he must battle his slacking ways to take care of his ailing mother when he can barely even take care of him-

self. Watching him try to grow up is painful. He can’t seem to shake his bad habits, he fails to be there when he needs to be and when he is, the results are disastrous. The transition from tortured slacker to caretaker and responsible son is not an easy one, and we never see James truly win. But we do see him try, and maybe there’s something to be said for that too.

This film will resonate with all.

It is not only for those who are in the same, desolate predicament as James — because of the universal themes in the film, all audiences can empathize with James. Watch the movie for its tender portrait of a tortured young man.

Scandalous ‘Cinderella’ takes stage

Company XIV’s eclectic production of “Cinderella” would make Walt Disney to blush. While in the film she is the protagonist, Cinderella is everything but the star of director and choreographer Austin McCormick’s interpretation — that is, she functions as a prop in the show, both literally as a table and stool and figuratively, to tie the various plots together.

Previously minor characters, such as the Step-Mother, stepsisters and Fairy Godmother are the ones who truly shine in this performance. Running at the Minetta Lane Theater, “Cinderella” is the ultimate vaudeville act — incorporating everything from burlesque and ballet to opera and circus with a gender-bending and scantily but ornately clad cast.

The combination of acts truly feels like a dream. The show exudes an air of antiquity, especially during every scene change when a silent movie-esque letter board is carried across the stage by performers wearing Louis Vuitton heels and not much else. There is an overall lack of dialogue throughout the show, with most characters relying on sensual and risque movements in combi-

nation with a pastiche of music ranging from opera and classical music to retro music infused with modern songs by Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Nicki Minaj.

The production is an incredible work of art with so many beautiful details that it is difficult to take everything in without missing any details. Perhaps most immediately visible are the actor’s costumes, comprising mostly nude-colored undergarments, all embellished in a magnificent baroque style. Over their toned and muscular bodies lie a combination of burlesque bustles, cages, panniers and rhinestoned codpieces. The collection of wigs, balloons and masks only add to the charm of the production.

The stand-out character in this show is most definitely the StepMother, brilliantly and superbly played by Davon Rainey. Rainey brings a perfect mix of femininity and masculinity to the character that no one knew was missing before. The Step-Mother ran the show from the very beginning and everything that happened seemed to be a direct result of her devious plan — to get the Prince for herself. Rainey’s sensual dances, vogue attitude and ruthless conquering all while wearing killer high heels made him a

wonderful and titillating villain, as well as an instant favorite.

The Fairy Godmother, played by Katrina Cunningham, is another fantastic character who truly astounds. Her Marilyn Monroe look and demeanor were just the tip of the iceberg. Her dancing and singing are mesmerizing and chilling to the bone. Cunningham has a powerful voice and does an unbelievable impression of Lana Del Rey, adding hints of seductive charm to the songs to go along with the piece. Her scenes incorporating balloons, glitter and alcohol effectively render her a dreamy fairytale character.

Cinderella, played by Allison Ulrich, is redeemed as a main character in the play of her namesake only in the end when she dances with the Prince, played by Steven Trumon Gray, in mid-air on a lyra. They are spectacular as they twist in and out of the hoop at an amazing pace and with incredible grace as they perform some of the riskiest moves of the show, ending the show with a beautiful ever after.

“Cinderella” finishes its run next week on Nov. 15 at 5:00 p.m. at the Minetta Lane Theater.

Trump SNL gets more protesters than laughs

While often used to promote policy, comedy has become a way to make a public official come across as a regular, average person.“Saturday Night Live” is often known for satirizing many candidates, but on Saturday, presidential candidate Donald Trump hosted the entire show.

In October, NBC announced that Donald Trump would be hosting Saturday Night Live with musical guest Sia. The announcement was immediately met with harsh backlash from critics, particularly in the Latino community. Due to Trump’s past racist remarks, protesters with signs proclaiming “Basta Trump” and “Dump Trump” swarmed 30 Rockefeller Center in the days leading up to his hosting of the sketch comedy program.

Among the protesters was NYU’s DREAM Team, a group of students who advocate for immigration policy reform. On their site, they state, “Our group is made up of students from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic and immigrant backgrounds who agree that the status quo of undocumented immigrants, particularly youth, in the United States is unacceptable.”

Nevertheless, Trump jumped right in despite the controversy surrounding his appearance. His monologue contained jokes about everything from Rosie O’Donnell to the very protesters outside the taping. “I’ve got nothing better to do,” was his reason for hosting the show. While attempting to keep it light with sketches aimed at making Trump look the slightest bit humble, as well as a particular moment in which Trump awkwardly danced to Drake’s “Hotline Bling,” it was obvious that the man didn’t sit well with various cast members.

A sketch set two years in the future with Trump as president seemed almost utopian. ISIS had been defeated; the national debt had vanished; Putin had withdrawn from Ukraine; and Trump, alongside his First Lady Melania, could not be more pleased with the progress. They acknowledged that the White House was the smallest property they’d ever owned, but their ongoing renovations were improving the building. Trump paused the sketch and said while this was not what his presidency would look like, it’s important for American voters to keep their expectations low so as to never be disappointed. The entire sketch seemed like an awkward attempt to humanize Trump, and it failed.

During Weekend Update, anchor Michael Che made a snide comment toward Trump that made it clear not all of the show’s comedians agreed with his views. While discussing the unfairness of President Barack Obama facing questioning about his birth certificate, Che stage-whispered his disagreement. “And I’m talking about the guy who’s hosting the show,” he said.

At another segment of the show, Bobby Moynihan’s popular character Drunk Uncle made an appearance. “He’s like a big old beautiful Monopoly man,” Moynihan said, in character. “It’s basically like I’m running for president: we both love white Russians.”

Ultimately, Trump’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” was riddled with racism and misogyny, and NBC’s ploy for ratings backfired.

Many SNL-regulars encouraged others to avoid watching the episode on television, and thousands of offended viewers refused to tune in.

Film shines ‘Spotlight’ on Church expose

Newspapers are dying, but the journalism industry is attempting to evolve in a far more web-based world. Thus far, the growing pains have been hefty, with many print publications disappearing since the dawn of the century.

Tom McCarthy’s “Spotlight” is a vindication of journalism.

It tells the courageous story of Boston Globe journalists who exposed the Catholic Church for repeatedly covering up instances of sexual abuse against children. The name comes from their unit, Spotlight, which specialized in lengthy investigations. Even in 2001, when the film takes place, the emergence of the Internet age began to eliminate the financial means for investigative units like Spotlight.

Both the investigation and film are necessary pieces in the media milieu. Without the breadth of time allotted to the steadfast Spotlight team, the proper story may have failed to been told in the film.

“Spotlight” is expertly made, taking a quiet and observational tone much like its characters, who are portrayed by an all-star cast including Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams,

There will likely be debate about which cast member should be Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, as the rounded talent works together like cogs in a machine. The emotional heights and depths as the investigation progresses are achieved through wonderful chemistry, bouncing from Ruffalo’s dogged, slump-shouldered determination to McAdams’ honest, moral care to Slattery’s comical and thoughtful commentary.

Keaton is possibly the star of the show. He’s mastered an everyman quality that makes him relatable, while offering illuminating emotional transcendence. His performance is soaked with straightforward decency and unabashed selfawareness. He knows when to deliver knockout punches and when to provide support in the background.

If not Keaton, then Schreiber may be deserving of the most praise. Schreiber’s almost hysterical under-acting somehow propels “Spotlight” to its incred-

ible second and third act. He hardly moves a muscle, yet his presence and mumbled voice carry the film.

The story itself is too righteous not to be engrossing, and those portraying the survivors, play a major part in honoring true crimes that were committed.

Phil Saviano (Neal Huff ), a leader of a survivor’s coalition, begins his account like a school presentation. It’s so well rehearsed it’s heartbreaking, and it makes one wonder of how many had to hear his tale and ignore it before he ended up spurring on the team.

“Spotlight” isn’t without some minor flaws; the beginning is disorganized, featuring annoying, out-of-place music.

But from there, the film gets swept up in its absorbing story about journalism’s role in social change.

“Spotlight” opened on Nov. 6, and is currently playing in theaters nationwide.

Aziz Ansari sheds his comically materialistic persona from “Parks and Recreation” in his latest comedic endeavor, “Master of None.”

The series chronicles the life of Dev, played by Ansari. Dev is a struggling actor in his late twenties who deals with the typical life problems of relationships, children, friendship and family, all set in New York City.

While this sounds like any typical sitcom on television, “Master of None” completely stands out from the rest. The show also deals with themes like ethnicity, culture and immigration. As Ansari has done in the past, the show pokes fun at modern society’s obsession with smartphones and convenience. For example, Dev has a Skype audition in the middle of a coffee shop.

The characters are incredibly welldeveloped and layered. In some ways, Dev is similar to Tom Haverford, Ansari’s character in “Parks and Recreation.” They are both treading adulthood with friends, trying to figure out the next step.

However, Dev has a much deeper backstory and is more complex than Tom. Each episode explores Dev’s family, fears and dreams.

Ansari is able to perfectly balance Dev’s humor with his complexity.

“Master of None” isn’t afraid to deal with storylines that are sometimes more serious than funny. The second episode, “Parents,” tells the story of Dev’s immigrant father and mother. This episode plays around with time and structure as it juxtaposes the life of Dev’s fa-

ther in India with Dev’s life in New York City.

In the episode, Dev decides to take his family out to dinner, along with his friend Brian’s parents who are also immigrants. After learning that his father worked in a zipper factory for two years in order to save money to come to the United States and go to medical school, Dev realizes how much his parents have sacrificed to give him the life he has. They flashback to Brian’s father’s childhood; we see him getting rice for his father and killing his pet chicken for dinner. Then we see how Brian won’t even make time to chat with his father.

Although there are many moments like this that are sad and a little bit upsetting, the show doesn’t lose its humor. Here lies the real charm of “Master of None”: there is an amazing balance between storylines that are real and complicated and moments that are hilarious and entertaining. Ansari’s new show is a darker form of comedy that approaches real-life problems of being a first-generation immigrant with refreshing candor. It finds humor in honesty, not extrapolation.

“Master of None” is a great show that has all of the elements of a classic sitcom, but with more layers and compelling storytelling.

“Master if None” debuted on Netflix on Friday. Ten episodes were released for the show’s first season.

Immersed in the lively culture of Chinatown, CAS freshman Janice Lu has managed to keep up with her first semester of college while juggling a job.

Working as a tutor at MS 131 Dr. Sun Yat Sen Middle School, Lu is part of America Reads, a national campaign started in 1996 that aims to help every child’s educational pursuits.

The job has been an opportunity to help children who are struggling academically.

As a tutor, Lu usually allocates her time by helping individual students with reading skills or assisting the teacher.

She manages to balance her work and classes by working on the days that overlap the

least with her classes so after she can head directly to the school. Lu works seven hours a week, but plans on increasing to 10 hours as she adjusts to her first year of college.

While she has been able to balance her schedule with work and extracurriculars, Lu admits that she occasionally feels the stress of having a job during her first year. Despite feeling overwhelmed at times, Lu says the pressure to micromanage is worth the effort.

While she only just started working with America Reads, Lu believes she has managed to make an impact on the students.

“Although I’ve only worked at the middle school for a month or so, I’ve already become familiar with a majority of the

teachers there and have become a role model in which the children look up to,” Lu said.

Lu has been able to evenly balance her classes, extracurriculars and social life with her job so she feels as if she is getting the full college experience. While her first semester has been trying, Lu believes the change she sees in the children make the efforts worthwhile.

“The stress is definitely worth it, as I know I am helping kids who are genuinely struggling with schoolwork,” Lu said.

“The feeling of achievement I get when I successfully help a student learn a concept they were previously struggling with makes the stress all worth it.”

Fashion comes to Cuba in 2016

Nothing screams luxury like a spontaneous getaway to a tropical location. The fashion industry seeks to embody this lavish lifestyle by revealing their resort wear collections in seemingly exotic destinations, such as Louis Vuitton in Palm Springs, California, Miu Miu in Paris, and Dior in Cote d’Azur. Past Chanel collections have revolutionized the runway in Miami, Venice, Singapore, Seoul and Dubai; however, designer Karl Lagerfeld announced the 2017 Chanel Resort Wear collection will make its debut on May 3, 2016 in Havana, Cuba — the capital of an impoverished, communist country plagued by both economic and human rights issues.

Cuba and the United States restored full diplomatic ties in July after relations between the two

were severed during the Cold War. Lagerfeld’s decision signifies the first fashion production in Cuba since diplomatic relations have been restored. Although the political dispute has since ended, domestic travel to Cuba remains greatly restricted. For the fashion industry, perhaps, this level of exclusivity and forbidden allure gives Cuba a timely edge.

In a release from Chanel, the “cultural richness and opening up of Cuba” inspired Karl Lagerfeld.

However, Lagerfeld is not the first fashion mogul to find ingenuity in Cuba. In fact, Havana appears to be represented in distinguished editorials throughout the September issues of “W” and “Marie Claire.” Ripe with colorful, pastel streets and an authentic 1950s feel, the tropical island appears to be frozen in time.

Cuba provides a unique and intriguing backdrop for both fashion shows and shoots, and is extremely

desirable due to its timely allure and location only 330 miles from U.S. soil.

Perhaps the Chanel show will promote future tourism or economic in Cuba. Cuba’s history, color, climate and architectural aesthetic grab the attention of designers who wish to stay relevant and transcend the limits of current fashion show trends.

However, it seems inconsiderate for extravagant clothes and privileged designers to inundate a country still extremely impoverished for the sole purpose of utilizing the nation as a backdrop for a luxurious resort wear show. Although U.S. fashion might be able to effectively capture the beauty of Cuba, it would be an impossible feat to accurately represent its fascinating charm without disrespectfully disregarding its countless years of hardship.

Molly’s Cupcakes (228 Bleecker St.) Molly’s Cupcakes is a tried and true favorite of NYU students. In addition to the peach cobbler cupcake they offer year around, Molly’s recently debuted pumpkin spice and tiramisu cupcakes. The highlight of their fall menu, however, is an apple pie cupcake. The treat consists of fluffy cinnamon cake in miniature pie crust-stuffed with apple pie filling and topped with homemade whipped cream. This modern take on the classic American dessert, as well as most of Molly’s other creations, can be ordered as a cake that would make the perfect addition to any Thanksgiving spread.

By Marita Vlachou <Deputy Managing Editor> How am I going to pay for all of this? Most NYU students have asked ourselves this question starting when we receive our much-anticipated acceptance letters and often extending far past the graduation ceremony at Yankee Stadium. The media — Washington Square News included — have published countless stories of how students cope with the extreme tuition for an NYU education. Instead of exploring how the burden of debt affects life while enrolled, we chose to focus on the future after the degree.

As students, we have a vested interest in NYU’s approach to financial aid. We’re familiar with that heart-pounding, panic-inducing feeling that accompanies an email from the financial aid office: your financial aid has been revised. We panic because despite NYU’s flaws, we love it and we want to be here. We love New York City — a leading cause of those high tuition costs — we enjoy our classes and student activities, and when we weighed the costs and benefits, NYU came out on top.

The question remains: How does this calculation differ from student to student and how does it change post-graduation? We tried to include stories that were more representative of the average NYU student experience. Some alumni had more debt, some had less, but they all found a way to cope with NYU’s price tag.

The purpose of this issue is not to examine the faults of financial aid at NYU, or in the United States for that matter. It is to give a voice to students who live the day-to-day realities of student debt when the bills start to come in. It is helpful to know what the reality of graduating with college loans looks like; that’s why we chose to talk to six alumni about whether or not it was all worth it. After all, the answer to that question is a personal calculation that goes far beyond account balances and starting salaries, and for current students the answer remains up in the air. We’ll have to see.

Was it worth it ?

Nathan Christensen GSAS 2014 No, it wasn’t worth it to me in the sense that the graduate program that I was a part of didn’t provide any serious job training that I hoped that it would. You know, if you wanted to go into academia and become an academic, maybe that sort of program would have provided the job training necessary to go out into the labor market, get a job.

In any case, I didn’t feel like I got the job training that came with the price tag. You know two years later, I sort of speak two, a second and third language, you know that was something I thought at the time would be a very useful skill. It turned out not to really be, and I had a really hard time. It took about a year to find a stable job after graduating.

Sara Gates CAS 2014 For me, NYU was worth the cost. I was in somewhat of a unique situation because I qualified as “independent” on the FAFSA, so I did not need to report my parents’ income. I was effectively the head of my household and I did not make much money at the time, so my expected family contribution was very low. Thus, I qualified for more federal grants and also received a significant amount of merit scholarship money for my high school achievements. This combination certainly lowered the cost of NYU for me. The bulk of the cost — and the reason I took out loans at the time — was housing and living expenses.

Despite this cost, I still think going to NYU and living in the heart of Manhattan was worth it. It was my dream to live and work in New York, so I only applied to schools in the city. I chose NYU not only because of the generous scholarship and financial aid package, but also because of the its prestigious journalism program and network. It was very easy for me to take classes and land internships in my field of interest. I had a job in journalism upon graduation because of that experience.

Adam Brulhart CAS 2015 In the literal sense, no. But I’m glad I did it. I owe all my connections, travel, friends, identity and professional experience to the fact that I went to NYU and in the city. Whether it was worth it really depends on what you value about higher education. If it is so you can get a job, then it’s not worth the money. If it’s about invaluable experiences and also getting you a job, then sure it’s worth it, as long as you can live with the debt for the next 10 or more years.

Marie Pederson CAS 2015 I do have some debt, though not a large amount. I was lucky to get a good scholarship and that my parents were willing and able to help me out. I think NYU is ridiculously expensive and that education in the U.S. in general is overly expensive. This being said, I think my education was worth the debt I currently have. Education is very, very important to me, so I am willing to continue to make payments. I also know that because I went to NYU and graduated with highest honors, I will most likely not have to pay for my PhD. To me, it evens out.

One thing to add — my goal was to graduate with less debt than my starting salary. Luckily, I was able to do this, so I am able to make payments without feeling like I am scraping by.

Yara Elmjouie CAS 2013 As far as jobs are concerned, I can only think of one or two job interviews wherein my university and by extension academic performance roused the HR person phoning me. Work experience and internships have naturally played a far bigger role in getting called back for an interview — and during the interviews themselves.

The counterpoint — and I willingly admit this — is that being in New York City exposed me to a veritable ocean of internship opportunities that I wouldn’t have otherwise had access to. NYU’s career/internship staff were instrumental in helping me identify which internships to apply for. That NYU is located in the heart of New York City is a major draw. So I’d say if think you know what you want to do with your life, are careeroriented and are willing to juggle internships with academics, NYU could pay for itself in the future.

Kokei Otosi Steinhardt 2014 I do believe my debt was worth it, in the sense that my presence at NYU afforded me access to opportunities and people I otherwise would not have had access to. For that, I am truly grateful. I do believe, however, that it is almost criminal for that access to cost so much. It’s exploitive and manipulative.

NYS should copy Florida’s transparency

By ABRAHAM GROSS Staff Writer Anyone familiar with American late-night TV knows that Florida has a reputation for being the punching bag of many a comedian. The Sunshine State, however, deserves a lot more credit according to the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, which characterizes Florida as having “the most expansive open government laws in the country.” Living up to its praise, all state, county and municipal records and meetings are open to the public in Florida. In fact, any official action taken during closed meetings is considered nonbinding. It is a remarkably broad, sweeping gesture of goodwill by an open government to its citizens, and one we New Yorkers and all Americans should fight for.

It would be tempting to assume that a liberal bastion like New York State would be as forthcoming to its citizens, but one would be mistaken. The 1977 Freedom of Information law reads “The more open a government is with its citizenry, the greater the understanding and participation of the public in gov-

ernment.” However, New York has a long litany of exemptions, including a 1985 amendment which, according to RCFP, excludes all deliberations of political committees, conferences and caucuses of legislative bodies from the Open Meetings Law. New York cannot espouse “open government” if it is committed to obscuring the political process from its citizens.

These instances show how “transparency, with exceptions” can sound nice in theory, but can in practice become “secrecy, with exceptions” if they’re broad and inflexible. The same criticism cannot be made against Florida, as it requires the automatic repeal of new or amended exemptions every five years. Exemptions can only be reinstated following a legislative review which demonstrates that an exemption serves a

public purpose, is not too broad, and is the only way to accomplish said public purpose. Safeguards to openness must not only be established, but also regularly maintained, a form of legislative housekeeping the ‘Excelsior State’ conveniently skirts.

Then again, New York’s obfuscation is not so surprising when nowhere in the state constitution is there any guarantee of access like that of which Florida proudly displays in the very first article in its Declaration of Rights. Something is seriously wrong when transparency is not considered as important a constitutional right of a state’s citizenry as the right of bingo — yes, that is actually in New York State’s Bill of Rights.

In the U.S., where the judicial system, executive and military actions and even comprehensive world-wide trade treaties are donning the armor of secrecy, citizens must wage a battle for openness wherever they can.

Florida is a model of government transparency for the country, and states that hide from their citizens are the true butt of jokes.

Houston needs another HERO

By ELIZABETH MOORE Deputy Opinion Editor Houston voters struck down the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance on Tuesday that would have protected its citizens from discrimination on the basis of certain characteristics including race, religion, sex, sexual orientation and gender identity. It would have strengthened nearly every Houstonians’ protection from discrimination in employment, housing and public spaces such as restaurants or buses.

The measure also would have brought Houston into accord with other large cities in providing protections for LGBTQ community members, but transphobic activists managed to whip up a maelstrom of fear big enough to drive Houston back to the past.

Houston is marked by a history of LGBTQ discrimination, including repeals of similar ordinances in 1985.

The city council had passed two ordinances prohibiting discrimination based on sexuality in city employment and was met with incredible anti-LGBTQ backlash. The Committee for Public Awareness was formed and

began spreading messages about the supposed dangers of homosexuality.

A conversation about anti-discrimination protections for a small group of city employees suddenly became based in fear mongering that relied on stereotypes of predatory, diseased gays. Painted as pedophiles, members of the gay community remained pariahs and the ordinances were repealed with an overwhelming 80 percent majority.

Last week, voters in Houston succumbed to the same alarmism which defined the anti-discrimination debate in the past. This time, opponents of HERO narrowed the conversation to transgender access to public restrooms. Touting the tagline, “No men in women’s bathrooms,” their scare tactics included a video of a young girl

being followed into a bathroom stall by a threatening man. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has said, “It was about protecting our grandmoms, and our mothers and our wives and our sisters and our daughters and our granddaughters.”

This patriarchal reasoning ignores the fact that in cities with anti-discrimination ordinances, there has not been a single reported case of a transgender person harassing a cisgender person, nor have sexual predators pretended to be transgender to commit crimes in women’s restrooms. In an unsettling echo from the past, once again opponents of anti-discrimination have falsely demonized LGBTQ citizens.

If Houston voters really want to rally behind women, instead of protecting them from the stereotypical specter of the transgender sexual predator, they should instead aim to shield them and others from discrimination with the help of ordinances like the one they were so rash to repeal. Next time, Houston residents must seize the opportunity to right this repeated wrong.

NYU financial aid still needs overhaul

Financial aid issues are central to many students here at NYU, as it is one of the most expensive private universities in the country. Despite aid in the forms of loans and grants, going to college on Washington Square is a significant financial investment. NYU often finds itself in the center of financial aid debates, and the question arises whether a degree from this university is worth the hardship. Many students, because of NYU’s fickle financial aid policies, are unable to attend, despite being offered admission to the school — a process known as gapping. Even though the amount of financial aid offered to students has been growing year after year, more can and should be done.

One area of needed improvement is financial aid for international students, who deserve inclusion. More often than not, the administration makes the assumption that all international students can foot the bill. However, this is not the case given that international students can represent different socioeconomic statuses. More merit and need-based aid should be offered to these students if we want to attract the best and brightest. We also need to look into what our peers do, and take a leaf from their book. Columbia University, for instance, guarantees to meet 100 percent of “all admitted first-year students’ demonstrated financial need for all four years, regardless of citizenship.” Given the traditional rivalry between these two schools, matching what Columbia does is the least our administration can do. Even though our endowment is smaller than Columbia’s, NYU is not doing enough for its international students.

Despite rising tuition rates and burdensome loans, college education is still, on the whole, a worthwhile investment.

Those with an associates, bachelors and masters degree continue to earn more than those without one. Even at NYU, three-quarters of those surveyed in 2014 obtained jobs by or within three months of graduation, and the mean salary of those students was significantly greater than the median household income in New York City — albeit before taxes.

But just because higher education is better than the alternative, it does not mean there aren’t improvements to be made.

Andrew Hamilton will take over as president of NYU in January 2016, and he will inherit these difficult issues from current President John Sexton. We don’t know what Hamilton’s approach to financial aid will be, but it would be excellent to see him taking a strong stance in favor of making college affordable — both for U.S. citizens and those abroad who see NYU as their best chance for a good education. Sexton’s style has been to treat NYU as a business and grow it accordingly.

It remains to be seen how Hamilton, with his academic background in chemistry research, will deal with the high cost of tuition here. Hamilton has the opportunity to dramatically change NYU’s course, and making the school more accessible would be an extraordinary first step.

Runners tune up before NCAAs

Championship season for the NYU cross country teams kicked off on Saturday, as both the men’s and the women’s team travelled to Williamstown, Massachusetts to compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships.

The men’s team finished in sixth place out of a 40-team field, even though the team rested their top runners to prepare them for the NCAA regional championships next weekend. There were 277 runners who participated over the 8k course, leading to the Violets earning 155 points total. The spotlight was on junior Zach Karas, who was the fourth place runner overall with a time of 26:43.66. Sophomore Sam Praveen, who finished 19th, said he was impressed with the way the

team performed without its top few runners.

“We had a lot of guys who usually don’t get to score points get the chance to step up and show what they’ve got against some of the best teams in the country,” Praveen said. “Zach Karas, who has been hurt for most of the season, stepped up big time to lead the squad of guys racing.”

Karas was battling back from a stress fracture that kept him out of competition all summer and for the majority of this fall. Sophomore Isaac Cohen, who landed in 38th place, was pleasantly surprised with Karas’ ability to bounce back from his injury.

“Zach Karas deserves a lot of recognition for his performance this weekend,” Cohen said. “His fitness level coming off of his injury is just incredible.”

Senior Eddie Cruz finished in 53rd place, but despite that he

was happy to wrap up his crosscountry career with the team.

“It was a solid performance all around, and I am really proud of the team’s depth and efforts this season,” Cruz said. “As a senior, it was my last cross country race as a Violet and I’m grateful I could finish it off with this squad.”

The women’s team also managed to redeem themselves from last weekend’s struggle. They managed to land fifth place in a 46-team, 311-runner race. Sophomore Emily Dethlefs provided NYU with another top-25 finish in 21st place. Senior captain Sarah Sisk finished closely behind her at 26th place.

Fellow senior Captain Lily Corsaro was the fastest Violet runner, taking eighth place with a time of 23:25.57. Corsaro is determined the team will continue to improve.

petition will be even stiffer in NCAA regionals. They’ll travel to Geneseo, New York where they hope to have their best performances to date.

Violets volleyball ends on positive note

After an up and down tournament last weekend, the women’s volleyball team’s season ended this weekend at the University Athletic Association Championship, which was hosted by the University of Rochester. This season has seen the Violets struggle despite stellar seasons from standouts like senior middle blocker Nicole Frias and sophomore libero Brooke Tannahill.

The tournament, which took place Nov. 6 and 7, began for the Violets with a match-up against Washington University in St. Louis, a team ranking third in the country according to the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

The Violets seemed outmatched from the beginning and lost the match in straight sets 25-12, 25-18, 25-9. Although suffering a loss, a few players had solid performances. Freshman outside hitter Shelby King led NYU in kills and freshman middle blocker Patricia Stirb finished the contest with five kills and one block. Tannahill also had a great game and notched eight digs and one assist.

In the second game of the day, the Violets matched up with Rochester, who came into the contest at an even 16-16. Despite great games from Frias, who totaled 11 kills and two blocks, and freshman Daryl Mitchell, who notched an outstanding 30 assists, the Violets suffered another defeat 15-25, 25-20, 2519 and 25-15. Tannahill finished with 17 digs and freshman defensive specialist Stephanie Mao notched another 11 digs. Sopho-

more outside hitter Rayne Ellis totaled five kills and 3.5 blocks.

King had an impressive 10 kills.

Coming off those two hard losses, the Violets went into the final day of the UAA tournament looking to end their season on a high note against Brandeis University (5-27). After dropping the first set, NYU dominated the match 21-25, 25-16, 25-14 and 25-12. Frias, who was playing in her last game ever for the Violets, led the team with eight kills and one block. Frias’ contributions, in addition to Ellis’ eight kills, freshman outside hitter Annie Singh’s eight kills, and freshman setter Daryl Mitchell’s 32 assists, the Violets breezed easily through the final three sets.

The win left the Violets with a 16-18 record and a seventh-place tournament finish at the Championship. Looking back on the season, Ellis said the team will use this year as foundation to build for the following season.

“I feel that the season was a good start to the long journey that we have ahead of us,” Ellis said. “The team is comprised of literally all freshmen and sophomores and still we were able to defeat high competition. So even though it was a building year, I’d say we accomplished enough to be proud of.”

The Violets, who will only lose Frias to graduation, are already anxiously waiting for next season. With the amount of potential the team has and the experience they have gained, the entire UAA should be on the lookout.

Wrestlers solid in season opener

The NYU wrestling team may have started a new season on Saturday, but it was a familiar face that led the Violets to a fourth place finish. Junior standout Nathan Pike picked up where he left off last season, going 5-0 in the 133-pound weight class to lead the Grapplers to a fourth place finish out of the 12 teams who competed. His performance was good enough to earn him the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament award.

Pike — who won four matches at nationals last year for the Violets as they were en route to a 12th place finish — is looking to take the next step and compete for not just a place at nationals, but a title.

Competing in the 174-pound weight class, fellow junior John

Messinger also went deep into the competition, losing in the quarterfinals after going 5-0 to that point. A pair of NYU seniors, Kyzen Smith and Gaaret Marinelli, made it to the fifthplace match in the 184-pound weight class, but Marinelli was forced to concede to Smith due to a medical withdrawal. In the 125-pound class, junior Wayne Yuan finished 3-2, kicking off what he said will be an incredible year for the team.

“We came into the tournament with many kids injured and not being able to compete,” Yuan said. “I think once we are all fully conditioned and healthy, we will be top 10 in the nation.”

The younger wrestlers on the team also fared well. Sophomore Raymond Jazikoff proved that he won’t start in a sophomore slump after a stellar freshman campaign in which

he led the team with 34 wins.

Jazikoff posted a record of 3-1 over the weekend in the 157-pound class. Freshman Ian Burke found his footing in his first career collegiate match, placing sixth in the 149-pound weight class by compiling a 5-3 record.

Though they were considerably off pace from Ithaca College, the winners of the tournament, the Grapplers turned in a solid performance in their first match after a long offseason.

They will be looking to round into form as the season goes on, and save some energy for nationals, where they expect to see at least a few different Grapplers compete for top spots. The team will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 14, for the Metro vs. PA Duals at Kings College.

Hockey’s midseason form falters

By RACHEL RUECKER Staff Writer

Following a Halloween weekend win against the Montclair State University Red Hawks, the NYU hockey team was home Friday night to face-off against Michigan State University at Chelsea Piers.

The Violets found themselves down early when MSU scored just 1:50 in. They dug themselves a deeper hole at 5:14 when they allowed a tip-in to go down 2-0. The bad luck kept on rolling when soon after, MSU had the manadvantage when sophomore forward Michael Conslato got called for holding, but the Violets coolly and calmly killed the penalty.

In the second frame, the Violets got on the scoreboard thanks to sophomore forward Steven Esposito, who netted a goal 4:15 into the period. The goal lit a fire under the Violets, who scrambled midway through the second to attempt the equalizer, but they could not capitalize. It was MSU who finished the period off with a goal, making the score 3-1.

After many fruitless attempts and a lot of net traffic, the Violets managed to get within one with 3:41 left in the second thanks to freshman forward Keaton Baum.

Unfortunately, despite a strong effort and a pulled goalie, the Violets could not pull even with the Spartans, finishing Friday’s game with a 3-2 loss.

Looking to bounce back, the team was back on the ice Saturday night against Central Connecticut State University in Newington, Connecticut.

Following a similar trend to Friday’s games, the Violets found themselves quickly down by two in the first period. Freshman forward Max Devorris brought them

back within one late in the period. CCSU scored with just three seconds remaining in the frame, restoring their two-goal lead and capturing all the momentum going into the second period.

Things got a tad messy for the Violets in the second frame when junior defenseman Evan Ripley was dealt a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct. The Violets couldn’t catch a break, as CCSU netted their fourth on the night during the man-advantage. The two teams then traded too-many-men penalties. The Violets killed theirs while the Blue Devils did not, and Conslato coolly finished on the powerplay, reducing the lead to 4-2.

Of course a few more penalties ensued before the games’ end, as well as a third NYU goal in their effort to complete the comeback. But alas, the final buzzer sounded with the scoreboard frozen on 4-3 CCSU. After their two losses, Head Coach Chris Cosentino remained positive about the Violets’ season, but touched on the troubles of having to correct team issues on the fly during a season.

“We have seen positives in every game, but each game also presents areas that need more attention,” Cosentino said. “The main thing right now is that we stay focused and believe in the process.”

The Violets will be looking to correct their mistakes next weekend in away games against the University of New Hampshire and Boston College, before coming home the following weekend to take on Northeastern at the Sky Rink in Chelsea Piers.

NYU’s undefeated men’s and women’s swimming teams were in action again over the weekend’s NYU Fall Invitational. The men’s team needed an exciting comeback to win, while the women dominated on both days.

The women’s squad brought its perfect 3-0 season record into Palladium on Friday and raced to a quick 133.5 point lead with strong performances by junior 50-yard freestyle winner Elise Gibbs and sophomore 200-yard individual medley winner Rachel Munger. Freshmen Haley Wen and Grace Wakabayashi also impressed, finishing first and second respectively in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Violets continued their dominance on Saturday. Sophomore Isabelle Kitze placed first in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly events, and also participated in four first-place relay teams. Gibbs was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke, and Wen and Wakabayashi again finished

first and second respectively in the 1,650-yard freestyle event.

“I think a huge part of our success is how supportive everyone is of each other,” Wen said. “It’s so much more fun and exciting to race when you know you have a whole team of people who want you to do well and are cheering you on.”

The men’s team, also entered the weekend’s competition undefeated, though it found itself in an early five-point deficit, but rallied nicely on Saturday to finish with a score of 762 — 80 points clear of Stevens Institute of Technology and SUNY New Paltz. The Violets’ key performers included sophomore Chad Moody, who placed first in the 100-yard freestyle, and sophomore Austin Palmer, who carried the Violets in the 1,650yard freestyle. Moody also led the team’s 400-yard freestyle relay team, but she credits her success to the team’s three coaches Trevor Miele, Kyle McNeilis and Erica Belcher.

“I am really happy about my performance this weekend but especially with the performance of my team,” Moody

said. “I credit it all to Miele’s great coaching and leadership and our two new coaches McNeilis and Belcher.”

Sophomore Joseph Baron won the 50-yard freestyle on Saturday, while finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle relay event. Baron said the team’s strong start is indicative of the remainder of the season “I think we’re going to have another record-setting season,” Baron said. “With the way everyone is performing, there’s no doubt we can surpass last year’s season, even though we lost a few key seniors.”

Both teams will carry their 4-0 records when they compete against The College of New Jersey on Nov. 14, at Palladium. The teams will then compete against Vassar College, before competing in the MIT Invitational in December.

The teams will then break for the holidays and will return on Jan. 16 for the Violets’ familysenior day competition against Springfield College.

Soccer losses jeopardize season

The NYU men’s and women’s soccer teams both finished off their seasons this Saturday against Brandeis University, with the men’s team falling 3-0 and the women’s team falling 1-0 — a bitter ending to what turned into a disappointing regular season for both teams. The women await a hopeful postseason bid, while this weekend likely marked the end of the men’s competition for the year.

The women’s team fell in a tight, defensive game. Brandeis took the lead in the 35th minute when Judge players Jessica Morana set up Lee McDaniel for a goal. After that, the game was mostly dominated by two very strong defenses. In their previous four games, the Violets had only conceded one goal. Unfortunately, they were outmatched by Brandeis, who outshot NYU 13-6, had five shots on goal to NYU’s one, gained four more corners and committed three fewer fouls.

For the Violets, the only shot on goal came from senior forward Melissa Menta in the 19th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Cassie Steinberg finished off a strong regular season with four saves. Sophomore midfielder Steph Ho is anxious to see what the NCAA tournament committee will decide about the Violets’ postseason fate.

“We’ve worked really hard this season despite not getting the conference result we wanted,” Ho said. “Hopefully our efforts will pay off and we’ll get an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Either way, I’m really proud of our team for overcoming adversity regarding a few last minute changes to the coaching staff.”

A 3-0 loss to the Brandeis men’s team, ranked fifth in the nation, put an end to the men’s team.

Brandeis took the lead in the 35th minute with a goal from Evan Jastremski. They dominated most of the game, outshooting NYU 24-6 and dominating 10-1 in shots on goal.

Despite this, NYU was resilient and kept the game at 1-0 until

very late in the match. Late in the second half the Violets switched to only three defenders hoping to equalize. Their strategical change led to Brandeis scoring in the 83rd from a volley by Zach Viera and in the 86th minute from a strike by Josh Ocel. Junior keeper Lucas Doucette will enter into his season with hope that the young players from this team can grow into a team that will compete for a league title next season.

“We have a great group of young guys and there is a lot of hope for the future of this program,” Doucette said. “The guys on this team are awesome.”

The game marked the end of a rough season for the men’s team.

The team finished 6-12 and 1-6 in the conference. The team’s lone conference win came on Nov. 1 against Emory in Atlanta, where they prevailed 1-0.
