#RiseUpOctober marches from Square

As New York’s #RiseUpOctober events continued on Saturday, 11 people were arrested at a rally in Washington Square Park, where hundreds gathered to call for an end to police brutality.

Family members of victims, murdered at the hands of police officers, came by bus from Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, Ferguson, Missouri. and Oakland, California to join New Yorkers in protest. The weekend was organized in part by Cornel West, renowned author and professor at Union Theological Seminary.

The stage at the corner of Washington Square and Fifth Avenue stood as a place for family members of victims to speak and be heard by rally attendees. The weekend’s events included a victim-name reading in Times Square on Thursday and a resistance demonstration at the entrance of Rikers Island on Friday. #RiseUpOctober representative Becca Bretz said the presence of these families at the protest on Saturday was necessary to inspire change.

“They’re the centers of this,” Bretz said. “The human side of

this is to see how these families are affected and give them the chance to be heard. They’re not all Michael Browns.”

Brown’s death in August 2014 sparked a movement of its own, but not every victim has received the same extensive media coverage. For Latoya Howell, speaking at rallies like this one has become a coping mechanism. Her son, Justus Howell, was killed six months ago by a police officer in Zion, Illinois.

“They shot my son twice in the back,” Howell said. “All of these stories end the same.”

She ended her time on stage by telling the other families in the crowd about her transformation from feeling helpless to feeling empowered.

“This is my life now,” Howell said.

“Justice for Justus.”

Throughout the rally, chants of “What side are you on?” challenged those in the crowd or passersby to make a decision. Carl Dix, a cofounder of the Stop Mass Incarceration network, demanded that no one remain neutral.

“In the face of genocide, there is no neutrality,” Dix said. “You can be on the side that recognizes this genocide and demands change, or the side that says it’s OK for

Other speakers encouraged action, such as the indictments and convictions of police officers; communication with elected officials; and the refusal to accept the justification of police murders.

West ended the rally with a reminder that the movement is antipolice brutality, not anti-police.

A recent study by a group of NYU scientists brings up alarming news for technology consumers: a “digital disease” built into devices can rapidly degrade its insides.

The paper titled, “MAGIC: Malicious Aging in Circuits/Cores,” outlines the process of this digital aging and possible scenarios in which it may be used. In essence, the program puts so much stress on processors that it wears them down at an excessive rate, aging them quicker than normal.

The malicious program described in the paper accelerates the aging at such a rapid rate that, after a month, the processor’s performance in an electronic device is cut down by 10.92 percent. In worse scenarios, it can break a smartphone beyond repair. The “disease” attacks the transistors found in CMOS technology, which is commonly found in processors for computers. Arun Kanuparthi, an NYU alumnus who co-authored the paper, talked about how the hardware is put under duress with this program.

“PMOS transistors are good at sending a 1 whereas NMOS are good at sending 0’s,” Kanuparthi said. “The transistors are put under

This paper is the first-known publication about the program, so there have been no implementations into devices thus far. However, Naghmeh Karimi, a visiting professor at the Tandon School of Engineering, said there are already rumors of its usage by technology companies in order to force consumers to upgrade their phones after a new model is released.

“There are some not-yet-confirmed stories about the engagement of a few industrial companies in planned obsolescence,” Karimi said. “Attackers, though, need to have access to the gate-level netlist of the processor using reverse engineering, for example, to implement this attack.”

However, only designers can control the aging and prevent MAGIC. Ozgur Sinanoglu, an associate professor at NYU Abu Dhabi, explains that even if consumers

are made aware of the situation, it is not in their power to prevent these attacks.

“The best way to protect against these and similar attacks is for chips to have built-in defenses, which designers are responsible for putting in place,” Sinanoglu said.

“The end-users, or consumers, typically have limited capabilities to cope with such attacks.”

This problem highlights the technology industry’s struggle to create a profit while still exercising morality. Xueyang Wang, another co-author of the paper and an NYU Tandon alumna, explained the long-term impacts of accelerated aging attacks.

“End-users must be guaranteed that companies are not designing products to fail,” Wang said.

“Regulatory bodies, such as FCC for instance, must step in and oversee things. This has a nice interplay between technology, law and ethics.”

The NYU Department of Public Safety received four reports of larceny, three reports of controlled substance and one report of harassment between Oct. 16 and Oct. 25.

Larceny On Oct. 16 at 1:15 p.m., a student reported that he left his bicycle secured to a stop sign on Washington Place at 10 a.m. When the student returned later that day, the bicycle and its U-bar lock were missing. A police report was filed.

On Oct. 17 at 4:10 p.m., a student reported that he left his bicycle secured to a rack in Schwartz Plaza at 1:00 p.m. but discovered it missing when he returned for it. The student declined to file a police report.

On Oct. 17 at 8 p.m., a student reported that she discovered two watches missing from her desk in Gramercy Green Residence Hall that morning. Her roommate also reported that her watch, iPad mini charger and case were missing from her dresser. The students notified Public Safety that their room had been unlocked.

The student declined to file a police report.

On Oct. 19 at 11:50 a.m., a staff member reported that a laptop was stolen from a locked office in Bobst Library sometime between July 29

and Oct. 5. The laptop was used by multiple staff members. A police report was filed.

Controlled Substance On Oct. 17 at 1 a.m., Public Safety responded to a report of an alleged controlled substance in Hayden Hall. A small amount of marijuana was recovered and the case has been referred to Judicial Affairs.

On Oct. 17 at 1:05 a.m., Public Safety responded to a report of an alleged controlled substance in Rubin Hall. A small amount of marijuana was recovered and the case has been referred to Judicial Affairs.

On Oct. 18 at 10:40 p.m., Public Safety responded to a report of an alleged controlled substance in Alumni Hall. A small amount of marijuana was recovered and the case has been referred to NYU Judicial Affairs.

Harassment On Oct. 19 at 9:30 a.m., several NYU administrative officers reported that they were copied on threatening emails directed at an NYU student. The incident is part of an ongoing criminal investigation and law enforcement has been notified.

Divest fact-checks Sexton’s Town Hall

NYU Divest fact-checked claims made by president John Sexton at his final town hall last week regarding the university’s involvement with the fossil fuels industry.

The group published a series of graphics which respond to select quotes from last Wednesday’s affair. One image, in response to Sexton’s assertion that NYU alone cannot reverse climate change, suggested that the university is essentially acting as a bystander.

Divest suggests that by not taking action, NYU is following the model of nations who wish to avoid dealing with initiating meaningful climate policy.

“The truth is that climate change can only be solved if the sum of the individual institutions and nations take action,” the graphic reads.

At the town hall, CAS senior and NYU Divest member Lila Carpenter questioned if Sexton would personally endorse fossil fuel divestment, to which he responded he would not.

“We do not make a statement that we are in favor of fossil fuels or against fossil fuels; we make no political statements with our endowment,” Sexton said at the town hall. “That kind of statement should be made by the university — as the university — only when it is visibly shown, through the normal processes of the university, that is a virtually unanimous position.”

In late April of this year the University Senate and the Student Senators Council voted to divest from fossil fuels. Because of this, the group was promised a meeting with the Board of Trustees, but the meeting has remained in the

planning stages. Carpenter said by investing in these industries, the university is making a political statement.

“I think you can argue you have made very political statements such as the creation of the Abu Dhabi campus and the 2031 Plan that had very distinctly had zero consensus among the community that are political acts,” Carpenter said. “We went into [the meeting with the university senate] knowing full well that the decision would have to come from the board, but also knowing that he does have a lot of play.”

CAS junior and president of NYU Divest Olivia Rich said she found Sexton’s response about such a decision requiring a unanimous position by the university to be problematic.

“It’s shown to be well-supported on campus other than the administration,” Rich said.

NYU spokesperson John Beckman said the endowment money is invested in a number of funds, where it is commingled with other investors’ money, and the specific decisions about how those funds are invested are made by the fund managers, not by the investors — whether NYU or the other investors.

“It is worth noting NYU’s very substantial and successful efforts to reduce its carbon footprint…that have reduced NYU’s carbon emissions by over 40% and our electrical usage by 30% over the last few years,” Beckman said. “The University is taking the issue of carbon reduction seriously, and University leadership is taking the Senate resolution and NYU Divest’s point-of-view seriously.”

Anonymous voices are coming together to raise awareness about sexual assault, as college students from across the nation have united through a campaign called 100 Voices Strong, which kicked off on Friday.

100 Voices Strong uses a mobile app called Flyy, which allows people to anonymously speak to each other — similar to the popular app Yik Yak, with recorded voices as the means of communication. There is also a voice pitch changing option if a person does not want to be recognized.

Stanford University senior Jared Wolens started 100 Voices Strong with the hope of reaching universities across the country. He has done this and more, garnering support from prestigious schools domestically such as NYU and Columbia, and internationally including the National University of Singapore and Oxford University. They plan to involve all 106 colleges that are currently under federal investigation for sexual assault.

“It is the only app where people consider each other like a ‘family’ because the support system is so strong,” Pham said.

Pham said the campaign solely uses Flyy because of it’s anonymizing capabilities, while also fostering a community.

“We want everyone to come out and speak their truths,” Pham said. “We want to connect people that are going through the same struggles or trying to bring change to other people’s struggles and we want the world to hear about it. We want to empower people to voice themselves and connect through voice.”

Student Senators Council chair and Gallatin senior Michael Hengerer said while the campaign does little to implement policy change in addressing sexual abuse, it is important to raise awareness and have students

talking about the issue.

“People tend to forget that sexual abuse will not go away because of policy change, and that everyone on campuses around the world need to take action in order for us to reach a point in time where sexual respect is the norm,” Hengerer said.

Several anti-sexual assault campaigns such as End Violence Against Women, International, Allies of Truth, Start by Believing Campaign and the Sexual Assault Clinic have also shown their support.

CAS sophomore Tiffany Ye said hearing a voice behind someone else’s story just makes it that much more personable and relatable.

“Hopefully, as people share their stories, others will be inspired or grow more comfortable with doing the same,” Ye said.

Netflix is no place for new films

You should know about NYU band Acid Dad

By FRANCISCO NAVAS Social Media Editor No musician wants to be boxed into a genre, but for NYU band Acid Dad psych-punk was a genre they happily embraced. Acid Dad combines the sexiness of Iggy Pop, the slow, deep chugs of Black Sabbath and the drama of Pink Floyd. Acid Dad sat down with WSN to discuss their time at the 2015 College Media Journal Music Marathon, the inspiration behind their band name and balancing school and music.

WSN: What does psych-punk mean to you?

Vaughn Hunt: Well it’s just a branding thing, literally like, what do you think is catchy?

Danny Gomez: It’s very melodic and aggressive at the same time.

VH: It’s complete bullshit.

WSN: How did you guys come together?

Kevin Walker: We became best friends and he came to Flat Box Recordings. I had the label and he had the studio, so he recorded the whole record and I released it with my PR team. We wanted to start a rock and roll band and we met him.

WSN: How are you guys handling school, work and the band?

KW: Day time we have normal lives, night time we have shows.

I dropped out of Clive Davis, I thought it was terrible. I study philosophy and History. I graduate in May. Sean Fahey: I went to the New School. Took some time off, I’m an assistant engineer at a studio.

KW: Most of my classes I’m on my computer doing emails. I love school, but as the music stuff grew, I’ll say I’m sorry I missed class. I had a show last night at 3 a.m. Mark me absent, I’m not asking for sympathy. They don’t get it, but I still do it… class is mostly boring. You sign up for these classes, the professor is an idiot…what can you do?

VN: I’ve skipped class multiple times to go to the practice space. I’m bummed because half the classes I take are really great.

It’s frustrating.

WSN: How was CMJ?

WSN: What inspired the name of your band?

VH: Drugs and alliteration. It’s gonna be funny when we are dads.

DG: We played six shows in a week — it was really fun. The best show was the last, which was at a psych-fest showcase, with WhiteFence. We got added to it last min-

ute because the band that was supposed to be playing couldn’t get their visas. We got a call two days before, the guy said, ‘I have some good news,’ and we were all freaking out because it’s such a large opportunity. It was a lot of work, and we all have work and class and stuff.

WSN: Where do you see the band going?

VH: Around the world.

DG: I think our goal is to make good albums that value the art of songwriting. Most of the people who burn out are in it for the perks, but people who have long careers, like Neil Young and Bob Dylan — who kind of sucks now, but at least he’s still going — above all, love it.

Nothing is more important to them than making music, and that’s a value we all share. Making music gives us the highest of all highs, and because of that, we’ll keep on going.

Cary Fukunaga’s “Beasts of No Nation” seems fit for Oscar billing. Helmed by a respected and popular director (don’t let season two of “True Detective” overshadow season one’s triumphs), covering a serious issue about child soldiers in Africa and led by the talented actor Idris Elba, the film has all the makings for a best picture contender.

The rub: its main release was through Netflix.

This is the first time such a noteworthy film has been released on a streaming platform, but it will not be the last. Netflix has already lined up the new Brad Pitt vehicle “War Machine” for release next year. The dawn of this new era has frightened many major theater chains, like Regal and AMC, into boycotting “Beasts.”

As a result, the film will receive a limited theatrical run, though one far smaller than it deserves.

Before anyone leaps to dramatic conclusions, the disadvantage of watching the film in theaters that Netflix remedies should be fleshed out. For one thing, this film is meant to be viewed on a small screen. The cinematography lends itself to be viewed on physically smaller screens because of the film’s vivid and non-stop brutality, which is best captured when in condensed focus. Fukunaga has said so himself, and though many may scoff at the notion, it makes sense.

Streaming can be great, but it fails to capture the immersive, visceral, captivating experience of a theater. The image isn’t the same, the sound not as control-

ling and there is ample opportunity to start and pause the film.

A worthy comparison is to seeing a Jackson Pollack on a computer. Sure, there’s the artwork, but does it capture the intended emotional weight? Nothing can match standing in front of the original, seeing it in all its grandeur. This is not to say all films should be viewed in a movie theater, but something with as much heft and cultural importance as “Beasts” is meant to be seen on the silver screen. A laptop or a TV just won’t provide the same impact and experience that a theater can.

In defense of the casual viewer, movie theaters are expensive.

Paying the standard fee for Netflix is great for streaming old content, and the fact that new, award-winning films and television shows will be available makes the service all the more valuable. Not having to leave one’s home to see a new release is a nice, lazy plus as well.

The real benefit of this kind of release is the fact that it could save the mid-budget movie. Today, everything must be adapted from a previous work, have a monstrous budget and be able to spawn a franchise, or have such a miniature budget that if it fails, no one is really losing money.

Many great films, including Oscar contenders similar to “Beasts,” lay in a middle ground that has become stale in the film industry in the last 10 years. This kind of release has its issues, but could create a new ground of potent, artistic films.

‘Daughter’ pretty but problematic

If you have ever had the desire to see presidential first daughters Betty Ford, Susan Ford, Rosalyn Carter and Amy Carter attempt to first handedly rescue American hostages in Iran, Michael John LaChiusa’s “First Daughter Suite” might be for you.

“First Daughter Suite” is a musical following the lives of U.S. presidents’ daughters, which highlights the scrutiny of living under the public eye and its effects on their familial relationships.

The musical is separated into four completely unrelated scenes. Each scene can be considered political satire, but the level of satire changes drastically from scene to scene makes the continuity of the musical a bit shaky.

The first scene follows the day of Tricia Nixon’s wedding and how the release of the Pentagon Papers,

as well as a light downpour ruined her special day. The second scene is a dream sequence where Betty Ford, Susan Ford, Rosalyn Carter and Amy Carter are on a yacht and sail to Iran to rescue U.S. hostages during the Iran-Contra, only to find out that Susan Ford is a terrorist herself. The third scene follows a spat between Nancy Reagan and her step daughter, Patti Davis, after her release of a tell-all book. The final scene follows Barbara Bush talking to the ghost of her dead daughter on the anniversary of her death, as well as coping with the fact that George W. Bush’s time in office has made the Bush family unpopular.

The show uses many surreal elements, but in confusing ways. While in the yacht scene, any absurd or surreal elements are fitting and very well executed, creating a humorous and clever scene, those elements did not work as well in the other scenes.

This yacht scene was teetering on

the line of racism with its portrayal of Iran and Iranians. It operated under the idea that all Iranians were terrorists and that they spoke in a language made up entirely of Middle Eastern foods, babbling food names, like “shish kebab” and “baklava.”

The surreal aspects got lost in the more realistic scenes and made it look more like historical inaccuracies than intentional creative decisions. Additionally, the recurring theme of the austere First Ladies as poor mothers became a bit dry.

That said, despite the sometimes dull script, the show was well executed. The music was beautiful, although not entirely memorable, and the performances by the actors were superb. Standout performances in particular were by Alison Fraser, who played Nancy Reagan and Betty Ford, and Betsy Morgan, who played Tricia Nixon and Susan Ford. Fraser’s over-the-top, yet sincere acting brought depth and complexity to

The minimal stage design and small size of the theater were used to the show’s advantage. The small space mimicked the fishbowl that these women are subjected to, given their place in the public eye. Each actor is so invested in their character and in tune with one another, which

is particularly moving to see so close up. While the script was repetitive and sometimes hard to follow, “First Daughters Suite” is still an incredibly beautiful production.

“The First Daughter Suite” is playing at the Public Theater, 425 Lafayette St., until Nov. 15.

Musician experiments with ‘Dog’

Performance artist and musician Laurie Anderson has worked in many different artistic mediums throughout her career. She is perhaps most famous for her innovative work in electronic music, with her song “O, Superman” becoming a surprise hit and topping the 1981 Pazz and Jop singles poll.

She has also won acclaim for her performance art and film.

WSN sat down with Laurie Anderson about her latest film, “Heart of a Dog.” WSN: You’ve worked in a lot of different media: music, film, performance art and gallery art.

What do you find you are able to do best with film?

LA: I don’t look at work in terms of best and worst, I’m just trying to follow my instincts and see what comes out. Film is a little bit different from a record. A record you can make twelve songs that are maybe kind of unrelated.

A film is better to have a bit of an engine in terms of story, rather than a collection of short stories. That doesn’t work so well in film, I think. Then again I’m not somebody who makes rules for what works and what doesn’t.

WSN: Did you compose the music for the film after having shot it?

LA: Yeah. I showed the film to some people and they said, ‘Please don’t put music in. This is so hardcore. Just a voice.

That’s so cool. Why mess it up with sentimental, manipulative music to tell you how to feel?

People know how to feel; you don’t have to tell them how to

feel.’ But in the end I put music because I’m a musician. That’s one reason to put it on. So I thought if I don’t like it I can always take it off.

WSN: The film talks a lot about Buddhism, especially Tibetan Buddhism. How long have you been interested in Buddhism?

LA: I started studying in the ‘70s, mostly Vipassana, which is a fairly new kind of Buddhism, about 500 years old. It’s based on storage of pain really, so that over time something bad happens, you don’t scream, you put it somewhere. Vipassana is about trying to find it through the body, not through language. Psychoanalysis tries to find your past through stories and language, through talking. Vipassana is much more about finding it through physical sensations.

WSN: A lot of the critiques about the film talk about the opening of the film, which features footage of an actual operation on the heart of a dog.

You once said that audiences try to categorize a work of art in the first few seconds, so you like to disorient audiences to stop this impulse. Was that your intention with the opening?

LA: It was for disorientation, and it is also the same opening to another film called “Heart of a Dog,” which also opens with an operation on a dog. It’s in Moscow, and there is this mad scientist who sees a dog on the street and tries to do a series of operations to turn it into a man. He’s a really good dog but an awful man, so it goes very wrong.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened two radically different but equally comprehensive galleries this week: “Fashion and Virtue” depicts the rebirth of European industry while “Celebrating the Art of Japan” spans the entire history of Japan. Despite such differing origins, the shared passion, creativity and sense of global interest of the two exhibits is utterly fascinating.

“Fashion and Virtue” explores the evolution of the textile industry from a single stitching by a woman to a massive, interconnected community of artists. Beginning with several Leonardo DaVinci designs, the rise of pattern books began in the 16th century, spreading fabric styles across Europe.

The gallery very deliberately refers to these creators as artists, comparing the passion and creativity needed for what was originally housework to that of a painter or sculptor. The exhibit goes to great lengths to explain how textile creation

developed over time into a fullfledged art form, with collaboration among creators and the variations on styles and techniques. The gallery ingeniously carries this idea into a hall of dresses, showing off how this vision has been carried nationally. “Fashion and Virtue” takes something as simple as textile and reveals the passion and drive behind it beautifully.

“Celebrating the Art of Japan” is more specific, bringing together a massive collection from Mary Griggs Burke — one of the great Japanese art collectors in the world. The result is a gallery covering the many statues, paintings and poems that span centuries of Japanese history. This historic span and diversity in art objects help the gallery stand out as a truly massive collection.

The images from eras of war and peace make stark contrasts between scenes of action and tranquil moments of citizen life, while eras of cross-cultural inspiration from China and Korea create beautiful examples of the Asian cultures fusing. There are also fascinat-

ing pieces of ink and painting scrolls, which tell stories of folklore and visualize them in beautiful detail. Several wonderful storytelling works are a part of the collection — the art depicts many mythical creatures beautifully. But the best works are the simple paintings of nature. The minimalist detail and color is nothing short of stunning, as blank spaces give branches, animals, mountains and rivers space to hazily hang on the scrolls. The results are something dreamlike, tranquil and unlike anything you see in other cultures.

There is no other collection of Japanese art of this magnitude in the city or even the country.

And the result truly is an incredible celebration of Japanese culture and a must see for any art enthusiast. In conjunction with “Fashion and Virtue,” the two exhibits at the Met create a double feature that capture the intricate stitches of fashion to the sprawling scrolls from Eastern Asia.

Behind making of alum’s webseries

This past Wednesday, the cast of new series “That Reminds Me” sat down with WSN to discuss what it’s like to produce and star in a web sitcom about the day-to-day antics of an eccentric family, in the style of “Modern Family.” The three leading ladies, NYU alumna Jenny Paul (Janie), Chelsea Roach (Kelsey) and Monica Cangero (Elaine) tell the story of how the idea came to fruition.

WSN: So how did this project all start? I was talking with someone at the premiere that suggested there was some sort of real-life basis for the plot.

CHELSEA ROACH: Everything was sort of serendipitous, everything sort of fell into place.

I mean we’ve had to work hard to, you know, get’er done, but the pieces sort of fell apart. Like, Jenny needed an actor to go to Maine with her because someone dropped out last minute. I happened to accidentally have food poisoning so I was outside of class that day. So she asked me, and I was like, “I would love to go.”

And we had this crazy road trip

WSN: Can you tell us about CAP 21 and your experience there?

JENNY PAUL: That program allowed me to understand both that I could make a go at this in New York because I was on par with other people that were looking to be professionals, that there wasn’t anything missing from me or from my skill set, that would make it okay for me to move to New York and decide to be an actor. It did do a lot for me and I really did love it and I know since then it’s not part of Tisch anymore.

WSN: Could you tell me more about your prior experience in acting?

MC: My husband passed away three years ago and I decided I can sit here in the house alone — my

kids are grown — I could get up and keep going. And so, I landed here, and I think I was only here six months and I met these two roaming around and I thought, well, I’ll start auditioning here.

JP: All three of us are pretty much full time professional actors in the city. Largely theater, I would say, but with a side of film.

I’ve done a lot of indie film and I’ve done a lot of theater, and I came to acting through sitcoms.

I used to binge watch “Lucy” and “Dick Van Dyke” and all the Nick at Nite shows that came on and “Taxi” and all these shows that weren’t of my time, but they were what I grew up on.

Coffee break with Arnold Byun

Once you look past the foam decor, there is a greater art form behind the common morning latte.

As founder and president of NYU’s Coffee Club, SPS junior Arnold Byun wants to share and help other NYU students familiarize with the involved brewing and roasting techniques.

“When I started Coffee Club, I wanted to create a club to form a community and raise awareness to this speciality coffee that was more than just a commodity that people were used to,” Byun said. “Rather than changing the way people drink coffee, the club is aimed toward introducing others to a new way of perceiving coffee and demonstrating how there is an-

other way to drink it — which is to drink it black.”

Rather than hosting weekly meetings, the Coffee Club plans frequent events such as tastings, special tours of cafe roasteries and workshops where members can brew their own coffee. The club has grown to the point where coffee brands and cafes will reach out to Byun to work with the organization.

Reflecting on his own experience with coffee, Byun admits that he had previously not been on the bandwagon of coffee drinkers.

“I actually didn’t drink coffee at all until I came to NYU,” Byun said. “I actually hated it in the beginning because of the bitter taste and didn’t even know how to interpret the different coffee selections on the menu. Espresso was my first

coffee beverage and it was not a good experience.”

His interaction with coffee started when he noticed many of his hangouts and meet-ups with friends would end up being in coffee shops.

In an effort to learn more about coffee and familiarize himself with it, he decided there was no better way to do so than to work in a coffee shop himself, at the well-known Blue Bottle Cafe, located on the High Line.

He was then enrolled in a 2-week training program, learning everything from steaming milk, pouring espresso and, most importantly, what coffee truly entailed and the different nuances of the drink. This experience sparked his interest and fascination upon discovering that there was a lot more to

Q&A: Alum John McGinley on career

WSN: What is your best memory from your time at NYU? JMG: My fondest memory is two of my classmates Eriq La Salle and David Warshofsky. Eriq went on to do “ER”, and David is now chairman of the graduate theatre program at USC. They are probably the best actors I’ve ever worked with. I have worked with them as acting coaches since, ‘cause that’s how great they are.

WSN: Did going to NYU benefit you in acting gigs throughout your career?

JMG: What helped me out is the fundamental grounding in being able to deconstruct any text anywhere on the planet, and make sense of the text for myself, and be able to turn that around and participate in the storytelling process.

What Ron Van Lieu, and Olympia Dukakis, and the other faculty did there for us was provide us with a template and a work ethic for how to approach and take apart a text.

Before he was Dr. Cox on Scrubs, John C. McGinley studied in both the undergraduate and graduate Tisch acting programs, accomplishments he considers to be a defining factor of his work.

McGinley graduated in ’84 and moved from Broadway actor to film. In this interview, he reflects on his days at NYU and sheds light on his career as an actor and philanthropist.

WSN: What would you say is your best work as an actor and comedian?

JMG: On stage, “Glengarry,” on TV, “Scrubs,” on film I don’t know — there are ones that I really hooked into, “42” the Jackie Robinson story that just came out, “Platoon,” “Wall Street,” “Talk Radio.” You never get to create a play and then be in the movie because what happens — I don’t know how to sugarcoat it — is called ‘starfucking.’ Whatever role you originated and worked on, they get Diana Ross’ daughter to do it instead of you. Because it’s a bigger name. So even though we originated “Talk Radio,” we’re definitely going to get someone else that’s a star to come do it. So the fact that I got to do “Talk Radio” the movie after doing the play for a year and a half felt really good.

And because you go to bring it out on stage and find out what worked and what the text supports and what it wouldn’t support, by the time you got in front of the camera you were money.

WSN: What is your next project?

JMG: There’s two in the can: one I just shot from Bogota that I just wrapped called “The Belko Experiment,” and that’s a big action thriller by the guy who did “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Then I went straight from Bogota to Nashville where I did this lovely two hander with Garret Dillahunt called “Rounding Third,” which was a play about what men do when they’re drowning in fear and inadequacy, and what we do when we are desperate and how we manipulate things.

WSN: Advice for current students who want to go into acting/comedy?

JMG: Go to grad. By the time you get out you have some tools. That’s what you gotta get: tools. Otherwise you’re dead, because when you get on a set, you’re only going to get two takes ‘cause we’re running out of light. You fucking better be able to pull a rabbit out of your ass — the tools.

Danny Meyer, the restaurateur whose eateries include Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe and Shake Shack, announced he would be eliminating all tipping in his restaurants starting in November. Instead, Meyer will be increasing menu prices by up to 25 percent. This decision is just the latest development in an ongoing debate about how best to compensate restaurant employees.

While the ban affects NYU students in the industry and those who just enjoy eating out, reactions are mixed from both groups.

For Stern freshman Mihir Panvalkar, tipping can be somewhat irritating. “I wish the additional costs could just be added to the price of food or whatever I’m paying for,” Panvalkar said. “Restaurants get away with paying employees a lot less and then customers are forced to subsidize them through tips.”

CAS sophomore Ana Carvalho sees tipping as a way to reward people for good service. “I genuinely enjoy tipping people,” Carvalho said.

“In fact I always tip more than necessary, around 30 percent.

A couple bucks extra means nothing to me, and for the waiter or waitress a couple bucks from several customers a day can really add up.”

LS sophomore Oindrila Das disagrees.

“I believe that people should be rewarded for their hard work, but that compensation

should come from their employer,” Das said. “I don’t believe that people need to be rewarded for doing what they are supposed to do. That being said, I do tip every time I eat out as I view it more as a social norm than anything else.”

Carvalho said she is skeptical about getting rid of the practice.

“I don’t think a service charge would be very efficient because the tip serves as an indicator of an employee’s service,” Carvalho said. “Tips give people incentive to give better service.”

In fact, the tip you leave for your waiter or waitress may not always go directly to them.

Some restaurants have a policy where every tip is put into a collective pool and distributed among all of the employees.

At other places, the tip may go straight into the pocket of your server.

LS freshman Melissa Deanna McDonald works as a hostess at an Italian restaurant, Ribalta. As someone in the business, McDonald said tipping should be seen as common courtesy.

“I hadn’t realized the importance of tipping until I got into the restaurant business and feel that everyone should try working in one to get a sense of the difficulty and pressure that comes with it,” McDonald said. “Although we get paid, there are still tons of taxes and tips that are good sources of income that aren’t interfered by the government.”

If you need a quick, simple and fun way to ask your friends which outfit works best, look no further than Picit. The new app, created by Stern alumnus Dan Hefter, allows users to upload two different images for their friends to vote on in real time. The slogan explains it all: “You pic it, friends pick it.”

Hefter designed the app after feeling overwhelmed by the different group chats he was involved with in iMessage, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. “What I wanted to do is essentially create an experience where everything is together and everything is simple,” he said.

The app, which is targeted at high school and college students, consists of two sides: the public side, in which “trendsetters” make posts that anyone can vote on, and the private side, in which users send posts directly to their selected friends. With the conversation feature, friends can talk about a specific topic in one organized space. Furthermore, the private component makes Picit stand out from other voting apps like Whichit and Wishbone, which are more targeted for the general public.

“The goal is to really get across the board interesting content that people want to engage with,” Hefter said.

Hefter graduated from Stern in 2011 with a degree in marketing and finance, and he said his experiences at NYU have enabled him to pursue his dream of creating his own app. After graduating,

Hefter spent three years working at American Express, but despite the high pay and great benefits, he was unsatisfied with the corporate world.

Last year, Hefter quit his job to start his own business. He hired a development team to design the app, and they helped him oversee the enterprise. “[A] bootstrapping startup means everything is not just self-funded but [at] as low of a cost as possible,” he said. “Everything I do is as innovative as I can be.”

Hefter stressed the importance of pursuing individual goals and happiness over financial safety.

He praised Stern’s entrepreneurial programs and encouraged young adults to take risks.

“When you realize that having zero dollars is not the end of the world, suddenly you’re OK with it.”

Hefter encourages spontaneity, acting on desires and avoiding over-thinking, especially in youth.

“Most of the time, when you’re telling yourself that there are reasons that you shouldn’t do something, it’s just because you’re afraid,” Hefter said. “And I was terrified. Sometimes I still am.”

This entrepreneurial spirit has resulted in both a fun, new interactive app and in a more fulfilling life for its creator.

“Success for me is loving what I do, which I do. Whether or not Picit succeeds is to be seen,” said Hefter. “In terms of my personal experience and learning, I would definitely put that as an off-thecharts success.”

Our generation has become known for ambiguous relationships that are rarely as simple as “single” or “taken.” The emotionless hookup is often complicated by someone catching feelings. This is the story of two NYU students who attempt to make “friends with benefits” or “the open relationship” a reality.

They met in class, first semester of freshman year. It started out as a hook up during finals or crossing paths after leaving different parties. They were both looking to get tangled up in someone else, whether it was to feel something or to distract each other.

Being friends made them feel comfortable. It was classic — hook up with someone you sort of know, are sort of attracted attracted to, but probably don’t pay much attention to.

The first time they found themselves in bed together was right before winter break. Following that, she thought about it — asked herself the typical questions.

What happened this weekend? Did this matter? And of course: Do I text him?

The holidays provided a good excuse to send drunk Snapchats to each other, and social media was a window into each others’ lives.

They returned to school. They made plans to see each other that would fall through, would run into each other on campus, were courteous. When she ran into him in public all she could think of is waking up in his bed two months prior.

They talked anyway. She hungered for attention but not attachment. They texted after long nights out, and she found reasons to bother him with irrelevant sentiments that she hoped sent the message, “Talk to me, I want to see you.”

They fell into bed together again and again. At first, they didn’t know each other’s bodies. They tangled in the sheets.

With the passing of time, the awkwardness eased. He dotted her neck with hickeys out of lust, but the next morning all that remained was a reminder to buy good coverup. Unlike in the threeyear relationship she had been in, the

They go back to school. The sex had been flanked by conversations about music, relationships, travel and home.

But without sex all that would be left are fragments of a friendship.

They had been sleeping together for five months, and she wanted a more concrete idea of what they were.

“This has been fun, whatever it is that we’re doing,” she wrote to him in a text, hoping to elicit a response to a question she wouldn’t ask.

She understood that he wasn’t looking for another relationship, and he understood if she couldn’t handle just hooking up. They confirmed that they were comfortable with using each other for sex, for company.

One morning the following fall, they discussed other people’s relationships, past and present, which turned into a discussion of their own. She referenced their relationship as “nonexclusive” which was muddled by his reply.

“Well I’m not sleeping with anyone else,” he said.

Though she wasn’t either, it complicated the “open” part of the open relationship.

Beyond agreeing that they weren’t serious, their relationship was tricky to define when they knew there was an element of consistency. However comforting it was to know that they were not in a “relationship” — at least one that didn’t value monogamy — the question of “What are we?” remained.

And she won’t ask. She’s comfortable not knowing.

When a sexual aspect of queer culture is too extreme, individuals are scolded for a non-traditional expression of their identity, one rooted exclusively in heterosexual expectations. This is a sexual account of a student who seeks an all-inclusive definition of gay pride and its intrinsically unique past.

I couldn’t see a thing in the bar as I descended into a hazy scene. After quickly buying a shot, I began cruising on the dance floor. I had no experience in gay bar culture, but I had survived Welcome Week and all the hormonal peers and queers that came with it. Cruising at the bar, however, was almost easier somehow. There was absolutely no shame here. One didn’t need to bashfully look away, faking some fictionalized, virginal innocence. If you stared long enough, the men would come.

One by one, various takers and I danced, frenched and moved on in a grinding mix of denim pockets and curious hands.

Soon, my final suitor led me to a new corner where total darkness enveloped us and disco balls would never shine. The moment I felt not one, but three pairs of hands on me, I knew I’d found something special. Someone’s lips were here, another’s were there and I never wanted it to end. Never had this amount of sexual freedom been given to me, and for good reason. The sexual intensity that the corner room held was unmatched, and there was no way my Gaga-crazed, high school self could have handled it.

Leaving the bar satisfied, I realized I had successfully engaged in my first semipublic orgy. The tangle of bodies was exhilarating, exhausting and downright sexy all at once. It was an experience that overwhelmed me in a moment of young naivete, and I took it as an intimate night I

would never forget. Today, I see past the personal reflections into why we gay men still hold onto this slice of cultural history that is so deeply embedded in our culture.

With the presence of social media, some question the effects of such apps as Grindr on cruising culture, the gay bar and the orgy. While not as regularly sought out among the queer community today, the orgy rooms of gay bars are undoubtedly frequented by men young and old.

Today’s gay community now has the opportunity to partake in this cultural performance — one that links us to the history of our gay ancestors who searched for nights of spontaneous release without the safety of a screen or a profile picture. So perhaps it’s time to reclaim the bar orgy to proclaim our full sense of pride for our authentically non-heteronormative history.

ignored or faked, consent is largely absent and the actors themselves are too often mistreated once the camera stops rolling.

When viewers conflate the current standards of porn with the actual act, the bedroom can become an unpleasant place.

The behavior propagated by mainstream pornography denies women pleasure and agency at best, and at its worst, perpetuates rape culture.

Over the past month, the Bay Area has been plastered with 100 billboards declaring, “Porn Kills Love. Fight for Love.”

The campaign, created by a Utah-based anti-pornography movement called “Fight the New Drug,” has over 1 million likes on Facebook. Awareness has grown with celebrities like Terry Crews seen sporting tshirts emblazoned with their slogan. Their goal is to inspire young people to stop watching pornography through education and awareness about its harmful effects.

While it is tempting to believe that the ubiquity of pornography is changing the way we approach real-life relationships, not all porn kills love. The fight for love will not entail convincing people to stop consuming porn; rather it will require the creation of something new. The rise of ethical porn should be encouraged, as it does not warp our perceptions of sex.

This is not to say that there should be an immediate ban on all pornographic content. In fact, we need more of it. Ethical, feminist porn exists, and if popularized, could lessen the burden put on sexual partners struggling to reconcile learned performative sex with the real deal. With ethical porn, not only are the performers treated humanely and paid fairly, but the view can escape the objectifying male gaze currently dominating pornography.

At its best, it is intersectional without fetishizing race or disability and enjoyable for everyone involved.

With the incredibly easy access to online pornography, users are viewing adult content at younger and younger ages.

One study found that the average age of first exposure to Internet porn is 14 years old. Coupled with a lack of proper sexual education offered in schools, this means that young people are doing much of their learning by watching what is available to them on the Internet, the majority of which is a terrible representation of sex. Women are objectified, their pleasure is habitually

Porn shapes sexual culture as a whole whether or not we as individuals choose to view it. It frequently serves as a learning tool and the benchmark for what happens between partners in the bedroom, making it more important than ever to strive to create and consume content that depicts healthy, consensual relationships. Good porn can teach viewers that mutual, genuine pleasure is what’s really hot.

Eating your heart out in the city

As the city is home to some of the most celebrated museums and galleries, taking a trip and indulging in art simultaneously is more than possible. Apply the film’s phrase “see it with a bud” for a fresh perspective of art while under the influence.

“I did the oculus rift there and it was so surreal and wild,” the Steinhardt junior said. “If I go to a place like the Met while I’m high, I get incredibly bored and paranoid because of the stressful environment. But the New Museum is pretty low key and in my opinion way more interesting.”

NYU’s Policy on Substance Abuse and Alcoholic Beverages states that the university aims to create a campus free of alcohol and illegal substances in order to maintain an environment focused on academics.

NYU understands students are responsible for making their own decisions, but the university encourages them to make informed choices through education about the consequences of drug and alcohol use.

NYU policy regarding the possession, use and distribution of substances is based on federal and New York State laws. Students caught disobeying these guidelines are subject to university sanctions such as probation, suspension or expulsion, and are also subject to criminal prosecution including loss of federal student financial aid eligibility, assigned community service, fines and imprisonment.

“To lump all those together and create a no tolerance for all of them doesn’t seem practical. Zero tolerance policies also lack empirical evidence for their effectiveness.”

Politicians are leaders, not saints

By ABRAHAM GROSS Staff Writer As part of a tell-all account due to be released in November, former mayor of Toronto Rob Ford’s former chief of staff Mark Towhey claims that Toronto police officers refused to charge the then-mayor for driving under the influence on numerous occasions; instead the officers would escort Ford home. Ford had perhaps one of the most farcically sinful tenures of any public official of the last few years, with a rap sheet that extends from drug and alcohol abuse to accusations of sexual harassment and use of escort services. Few were surprised when his approval ratings dropped. Ford’s fall from grace is actually not the norm for public officials whose vices have been uncovered, however, nor should it be. Politicians should be judged by their job performance, not their moral character.

Political figures are placed on pedestals, and the revelation of a vice is often splashed across media outlets.

Some vices, like those of Ford, are both illegal and impair judgement, two qualities that would likely im-

pact job performance considerably.

But others seem less relevant to the role public officials serve in promoting the public welfare. As others have said, it is unclear why something like evidence of Obama’s smoking should instigate outrage. It’s not as if a cigarette break undermines the credibility of the Affordable Healthcare act, or any other policy an official has run on.

In fact, even a cursory review of recent U.S. history reveals that public opinion of politicians is not significantly impacted so long as their guilty pleasures don’t impair their overall job performance. President Bill Clinton’s affair is perhaps the most famously publicized blemish of any modern public official. This was largely due to the work of the Republican-controlled House of Representatives spearheaded by then-Speaker

Newt Gingrich — who had an extramarital affair of his own. But even during the heat of the impeachment process, which brought forth scintillating accounts of the president’s sex life, Clinton’s public approval ratings soared on the strength of a growing economy and minimal foreign intervention. The presidency of George W. Bush, a devout Methodist, was largely scandal-free, but a disastrous global economic collapse and two long and inconclusive wars abroad tanked the nation’s confidence in him. It seems public approval, when all is said and done, is not too focused on the moral shortcomings of politicians, even the most globally prominent ones.

Politicians in America’s highest office are largely judged on issues related to the economy. In this way, all public officials are like CEOs: their bottom line is what counts. Officials are constantly crushed by the weight of public scrutiny, but if politicians are meant to represent real people with real issues, then maybe a vice is merely a sign of humanity.

Criminal record is not the end of the world

By SHIVA DARSHAN Staff Writer Campaigns on campus such as Abolish the Box represent a transformation in our attitudes toward people with criminal records. Many groups on campus and around the country, including the Incarceration to Education Coalition, an NYU advocacy group fighting to remove the question regarding existing criminal records from the Common Application, are pushing us toward better treatment of people who have committed or are accused of crimes. For all the logic that the prison reform movement may have on its side, it cannot yet surmount the vitriolic cultural stigma against people in prison, as evidenced by bills like New York Rep. Chris Collins’ “Kids Before Cons”, which aimed to limit educational opportunities for people in prison. But we owe people with criminal convictions the chance of rehabilitation.

Even at NYU, we are not immune to a visceral reaction of fear when it comes to criminal convictions. Students had a gut response to charges

of domestic violence pending against an NYU professor. Though the student body’s reactions were mixed, a significant portion of students expressed concern about classroom safety. There were renewed concerns when he was released, but these are rooted in emotion rather than logic. His release shows that the city thought he is not a threat to the public. This reaction is one of gut fear, since he is no longer at NYU and unlikely to be a direct threat toward students. The American Bar Association has cataloged about 44,500 collateral consequences of being convicted of a crime that continue to have consequences long after release. That same gut fear drove each of those decisions.

It is time we start confronting it and reducing it.

As it stands now, discrimination against people with convictions only serves to exacerbate their economic and social struggles, making repeat offenders out of otherwise well adjusted people. In order to reintegrate, those formerly incarcerated need education and jobs. But when the providers of education and jobs refuse to give them a chance, potential students and workers turn back to crime just to survive. Stigmatizing the formerly incarcerated only serves to perpetuate the cycle of crime. If the cycle is ever to be broken, this stigma must be broken first.

The prison reform campaign is a step in the right direction, but if we want substantive changes in how we treat people who are arrested — whether or not they are convicted — we need a change in mindset. When we discuss people who have committed crimes, we should never forget that they are people, not convictions or arrests. Everyone deserves both the benefit of the doubt and the room to err.

College drinking about safety not prohibition

Countless articles have been written about the prevalence of binge drinking on campuses. NYU, however, represents a special case given our lack of a centralized campus and a smaller Greek footprint than most small-town colleges, and that we in a large metropolis. That said, underage drinking does happen despite NYU’s zero-tolerance approach to alcohol. It’s important to remember amid the hysteria surrounding excessive drinking, college is not real life. College is a time when young adults learn to be fully adult, and a big part of that learning experience is discovering how to drink responsibly. Drinking on campus and in college dorms isn’t going to end any time soon, and rather than seeking to eradicate it, NYU is bringing these conversations to the fore of students’ minds with Alcohol Edu and several programs during Welcome Week. While drinking is a problem and work still needs to be done at all colleges, NYU is doing an admirable job of trying to inform students about the realities of drinking.

Binge drinking in college is mostly associated with dingy basements and frat houses, neither of which are particularly common here at NYU. Instead, a significant part of the drinking culture here revolves around the vibrant nightlife of downtown Manhattan. The university is very much a part of the city, and drinking, like it or not, is a large part of New York City culture. Students come to the city looking for clubs and nightlife, and the university knows that no amount of rules is going to discourage students from chasing a good time.

Drinking is often viewed as a rite of passage for those entering into adulthood, but it does not have to be a messy affair that ends in citations or broken bones. NYU’s Good Samaritan policy, which stresses the wellbeing of students in the case of binge-drinking or drug use, shows their commitment to a realistic approach when it comes to substance use.

Given that college is a time of relative freedom and independence for many students, it is only reasonable to expect that most students will experiment with alcohol. Rather than drawing a line in the sand and condemning or endorsing the behavior outright, NYU is correct in thinking that resources are better spent teaching students how to consume alcohol safely and responsibly. An approach that emphasizes safety over punishment is necessary to cultivate a positive environment.

Soccer shuts out weekend opponents

In what was the first across the board success for NYU soccer since the beginning of October, the men’s and women’s soccer teams shut out their opponents over the weekend, securing two strong and much-needed victories.

The women’s soccer team picked up its 10th win of the season last Thursday beating St. Joseph’s College-Long Island 5-0 at Gaelic Park in the Bronx. The Violets took control of the game from the first whistle and never looked back, finishing the match with an overwhelming 27-1 advantage in total shots, 18 of which were on goal.

Sophomore forward Mckennah Spagnola added to the lead in the 44th minute after scoring a breakaway solo goal, notching her fourth as well.

It’s no secret that defense has been at the center of the women’s soccer team’s mentality as they’ve built a culture of winning in the UAA over the last few years. The linchpin of any good defensive unit, though, has to be the goalkeeper. That’s why, on the heels of what was an eight-game win streak for the Violets, it has been key for junior goalkeeper Cassie Steinberg to remain steadfast at the back of NYU’s defense all season long. Steinberg, who has started all three years since coming to NYU, is in great form as the team looks to make their second NCAA tournament in a row after not reaching the contest in over a decade.

“I think that a lot of us came into the season with the goal of making the tournament again, just because last year we made it for the first time in 11 or 12 years and we’ve showed a lot of growth in the program,” Steinberg said. “The difference this year is confidence and feeling comfortable with the team, the system we play in, the communication with the coaches.”

Her performance was good enough to earn Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference defensive player of the week last weekend. But aside from the strides she’s made in comfort with the team, it’s been the progress she’s made physically that’s allowed her to turn away opposing forwards at the net. Steinberg, a nutri-

tion and dietetics major in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, has used her studies and her personal affinity for exercise and health to put herself in peak condition to compete.

“My life’s always been surrounded by that kind of stuff, being an athlete,” Steinberg said. “My junior year of high school I started to realize the food that I was eating affected my athletics. I thought that was really interesting and I decided to pursue it.”

Aside from spilling over into her athletic life, her interest in nutrition also affects what she finds herself doing in her free time. She spends a considerable amount of time in one of two places: the kitchen cooking up a healthy meal for her and her teammates, or the gym.

“I love cooking,” Steinberg said. “That’s therapeutic for me. I’ll have a lot of my teammates over for pre-game dinners sometimes. I also just love working out. My friend works at the spin studio, so I go take classes there a lot.”

Her life, a busy combination of academics and athletics, remains tied together by that interest in nutrition. However, at least academically, it comes at the price of having to work twice as hard as most students.

While she takes lighter classes on nutrition counseling and nutrient breakdown, she also has to work through some of the most dense chemistry, biology and physiology courses the university has to offer. She’s tailored her class schedule to be a little more friendly during soccer season, not taking the full

shutout of the season. Freshman midfielder Richard Mitrano scored first, and junior midfielders Tristan Medios-Simon and Bryan Walsh, as well as freshman forward Evan Reifsnyder helped add to the lead with one goal each. It was Reifsnyder’s first collegiate goal. Mitrano said this win was important for a team whose standing bordered rock bottom.

“Overall each player contributed to a good team effort and it was nice to bounce back with a strong win,” Mitrano said.

The women’s soccer team will return to action for their final nonconference match of the regular season when they host Centenary College at home on Monday, Oct. 26, where kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

As for the men’s team, they will hit the pitch once again on Friday, Oct.

Hockey continues to cool down

Steinberg has been the starting goalie for all three years of her NYU soccer career. four courses and one lab class that science majors often do. Instead, she limits herself to four, which allows her to keep up on sleep, which she feels is as important as any other aspect of nutrition.

“I’m huge on going to bed early and having sleep,” Steinberg said. “I get up pretty early and use the mornings to do work. I’m almost always asleep by 10:30.”

With just three UAA games left on the slate, Steinberg and her teammates will have to bear down and focus if they want to live up to the expectations they set of reaching the NCAA tournament and making some noise. Even though she describes the next few games as winnable, the team will have to stay alert and avoid any letdowns that could jeopardize the hard work they’ve put in to get to this point.

Luckily enough, they have Steinberg staying steady between the posts, well-rested and well-conditioned to lead the Violets deeper into the postseason than they have ever been.

After a perfect start to the season, the NYU hockey team has come back down to earth in its last few games.

This weekend they lost two tough competitions, one to rival William Paterson University and the other to Arizona State University.

Bad luck got the better of the Violets on Friday when they lost 4-2. No sooner than eight seconds in, the Violets needed to rely on their penalty kill as sophomore forward Steven Esposito was sent to the box for a cross-checking minor. It wasn’t until freshman defender James Moeller took a penalty that things started to get dicey. His penalty at 5:41 was killed, but as he was exiting the box WPU got one past senior goaltender Sam Daley.

The penalties then went the other way, giving NYU a 5-on-3 for 1:54, which they capitalized on. Freshman forward Hamilton Whyte putting the Violets on the board and tied the game at 1-1, where it stayed through the end of the first frame.

In the second period, a hooking call against WPU gave the Violets the time and space to get the go ahead goal thanks to senior forward Denis O’Hara with the help of an assist from Moeller. After another successful kill by the Violets, the second period came to a close with shots fairly even at 13-12 in favor of NYU. The third period remained tight but scoreless for a while, as NYU managed to kill three power plays before things unravelled at the end.

A rough bounce paired with an icing call got WPU two goals in 34 seconds, giving them a one-goal lead heading into the final minute of play. With Daley pulled, NYU was hoping for an unlikely comeback, but an empty netter sealed their fate.

“It was a tough one to swallow,” freshman defender Gabe Regan said.

“We were up most of the game and

they just turned on a switch and capitalized on our mistakes.”

Whyte, who played well in a disappointing loss, looks forward to getting another crack at WPU later in the season when the Violets host them on their home ice.

“It was a tough loss against a team that we know we can beat,” Whyte said. “We have them at Chelsea Piers later this season and I’m already pumped for redemption.”

On Sunday morning, the Violets were back at the Sky Rink bright and early to face off against the ASU Sun Devils.

ASU came out hard from the drop and dumped pucks on net early, establishing a one-goal lead by the end of the frame. Sophomore goalie Jack Nebe did everything in his power to keep the game close, facing 16 shots while his teammates only managed to get two.

ASU netted another early in the second period to take a two goal lead, but NYU managed to respond when junior defender Evan Ripley put one past the ASU goalie. Not long after, a couple of quick breakaways put ASU up by three heading into the third.

The third frame did not start out much better for the Violets. They got scored on 19 seconds in. NYU eventually managed to capitalize on an ASU interference call as Moeller got his first goal as a Violet. With a three goal lead to overcome, NYU desperately pulled Nebe with 4:30 remaining only to fall victim to another empty-netter that made the score 6-2, where it would remain to give the Violets their second loss of the weekend.

The Violets hope to redeem themselves next Friday, Oct. 30, as they face Montclair State University at the Floyd Hall Arena in Montclair, New Jersey Email Rachel Ruecker at sports@nyunews.com.
