Professors at NYU’s Florence campus, Villa La Pietra, have received new contracts that will result in a salary decrease. By ALEXANDRA CONNOLLY and BRITTANY YU A recent legislation in Italy created new contracts for NYU Florence professors. The law is in response to complaints from foreign-born, Italy based professors who were previously required to work for an undetermined amount of time. They were also typically paid less and had a shorter contract

than native Italian professors because they were considered temporary workers. The legislation, which took effect in July, requires all professors to be hired under a contract that sets a certain number of hours for them to work. However, this number varies among institutions. “Nothing is really welldefined at the moment for us here in Villa La Pietra,”

said Lily Prigioniero, a writing professor at NYU Florence. The new law also requires institutions to pay higher insurance contributions, which include social security payments to the Italian government and state pension contributions. As a result, the universities will be cutting employee salaries by 20 to 50 percent or reduce staff members. At NYU Florence, all profes-

sors will be able to retain their positions with a 20 percent decrease in salary. One NYU Florence professor, who wished to remain anonymous due to the precariousness of the teachers’ current positions, said the law was the worst possible outcome for their situation. “It is both a drop in salary

NYU’s Gallatin Galleries is featuring the work of up-and-coming designer Anna Kathleen. The Gallatin School of Individualized Study graduate is displaying her debut fashion collection alongside original digital prints and illustrations. The exhibition, titled “Earth + Beyond,” also includes a fashion film that the young designer envisioned and created with Kaliya Warren, the filmmaker and Tisch School of the Arts alumna. Kathleen moved to New York City in 2007 and studied Fashion Theory at Gallatin for two years.

Meet Kavian Bina, NYU’s male Athlete of the Week. He is a freshman golfer from Villanova, Pa. He can be considered a walking billboard for NYU. SARA LEVY: Did choosing a college or university depend on the type of golf team it had? KAVIAN BINA: It was definitely a factor but education was number one. I had the opportunity to play DI golf at Lafayette, but I chose NYU because it was so diverse and it was in the middle of the greatest city on earth. SL: What do you enjoy most about playing for the men’s golf team?

More residents of New York state are struggling to afford food, according to a recent report from the United States Department of Agriculture. The report showed that between 2009 and 2011, about 13 percent of households in the state experienced food insecurity — meaning they were unsure of whether they could afford to eat everyday. This marks a 2 percent increase from the percentage of households struggling to afford food in New York from 2006 to 2008. Almost 15 percent of households nationwide encountered food insecurity over the three-year period. The data in the report is based on the annual survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. The 2011 food security survey interviewed about 5,600 households in the state, which included a representative sample of the

KB: I really love bonding with the teammates on the bus rides and in the hotel the night before we play. I love the competition and the challenge of playing against other schools and players in varying conditions in many different locations. SL: What attracted you to NYU? KB: When I went to Admitted Students Day I really was blown away with the presentation of the school and how they were able to really show everything they had to offer. I left there feeling like there wasn’t anything that I couldn’t do. It was an amazing feeling. I knew right away that I was going to NYU.

SL: How do you like living [at Hayden]? KB: I am absolutely loving it. Everyone is eager to meet each other and they are all very warm. We have had great bonding moments during Welcome Week and I’m sure when golf season is over, I will be spending much more time with my Haydenite friends. It’s awesome because I will see some of my friends from Hayden outside the dorm talking and I’ll join right in and meet new people, too. For example, last night I saw a few friends and we all started to have a big freestyle rap battle
