LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
A
There were certainly some days when you ran through the same activities in a mundane, repetitive schedule: school, work, sleep — or maybe no sleep — and repeat. But there are also the memories you will never forget and the moments that changed your life.
college experience is made of memorable moments folded together, each leaving a unique mark on each of us. Another year at NYU has flown by, so now I ask that you pause and think about the events you remember the most. Think about how you arrived here and how each instance has made an impression on your journey thus far. From Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift to the end of the Iraq War. From the opening of NYU Abu Dhabi to the revolution in Egypt. From Hurricane Sandy to the Boston Marathon bombings, you have experienced history. With this special issue, I invite you to remember how you arrived at this moment. Remember your favorite classes and professors. Remember how you felt when you were studying abroad. Remember all the times you spent with your friends. All of those moments were part of your destiny to lead you to where you are now.
JUNE 25, 2009 Famed pop music artist Michael Jackson dies at age 50. His death is later ruled a homicide committed by Jackson’s personal physician, Conrad Murray. AUGUST 6, 2009 Bronx native Sonia Sotomayor is confirmed as the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice. She would become the commencement speaker for NYU’s class of 2012 graduation ceremony. SEPTEMBER 8, 2009 Rather than continue to offer students free 24-hour printing, NYU institutes $50 printing budgets for each semester. SEPTEMBER 13, 2009 Kanye West crashes Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at MTV’s Video Music Awards as she is accepting the award for Best Female Video.
2009/2010
One of these events might not be a first meeting with the love of your life on a subway platform, but life does not always play out in perfect, Disney fashion. Take risks, explore options and remember. Some things may not go according to plan, and some attempts will fail to hit their mark. But in the end, everything will fall into place. You’ll be exactly where you need to be. We have provided a starting point, but I ask that you allow nostalgia to fully take hold as you read these pages. Go ahead, think about the past and relish in the possibilities the future has to offer.
