Q&A With a Deplorable NYU Professor

Deplorable NYU Prof entered the Twitter-sphere with the handle @antipcnyuprof on Monday, Sept.

12. A real professor at NYU, he uses this account to argue against safe spaces, trigger warnings and the politically correct culture that imbues university settings.

His Twitter bio reads, “NYU professor exposes the viral identity politics of academia and its destruction of academic integrity.”

Deplorable NYU Prof is actually LS Clinical Assistant Professor Michael Rectenwald, who said he wanted to go undercover among the alt-right to express his exasperation with the politically correct culture while shielding himself from social justice warriors — or SJWs, as he unfondly calls them.

Rectenwald only labeled himself as a real, full-time NYU professor on Twitter, but he promised that once he reached 500 followers, he would reveal the corruption within higher education that stems from what he sees as liberal totalitarianism.

Washington Square News got a chance to sit down with Rectenwald

before he shared the promised story of corruption online.

Washington Square News: Could you start by telling me a bit about your Deplorable NYU Professorship and @antipcnyuprof handle?

Michael Rectenwald: Let me explain why the character @antipcnyuprof existed and what the statement I’m making is. My contention is that this particular social-justice-warrior-left is producing the alt-right by virtue of its insanity.

Frankly, I’m not really anti-pc. My contention is that the trigger warning, safe spaces and bias hotline reporting is not politically correct. It is insane. This stuff is producing a culture of hypervigilance, self-surveillance and panopticism.

WSN: Could you explain your feelings towards trigger warnings and safe spaces?

MR: One of the major problems of a trigger warning is this: according to trauma psychology, nobody has any idea what can trigger somebody. There is no way to anticipate just what would trigger people. As for safe spaces, I’m more ambiguous about it. People have their right to assemble as they wish. A safe space represents such an assembly.

WSN: How does that manifest at NYU? MR: What happens is that the left presents its needs to the administration in universities, and the administration seizes on these opportunities to produce power and control to actually discipline the subjects under them. Trigger warnings are administrative weapons that they can use to enter into the curriculum and into the syllabi, and that’s dangerous. That’s a dangerous, slippery slope.

WSN: How do students handle this?

MR: Identity politics on campus have made an infirmary of the whole, damn campus. What are we supposed to do? Everybody is triggered; everybody is basically a post traumatic stress disorder subject waiting to go off. And what do hospitals require? They require certain containment. They require a certain restriction of movement.

They require surveillance. That’s the problem with having a hospital as a university.

WSN: So how does this tie into Trump? Could you explain your support for him?

MR: I don’t support Trump at all.

Yik Yak Could Lose Anonymity

Students could not stop yiking and yaking on the social media app Yik Yak when it first launched in 2013. This medium thrives off anonymity, but a recent study by Tandon professor Keith Ross could possibly strip the virtual mask off its users.

Ross worked with students from NYU Shanghai and East China Normal University on a study of the privacy issues facing Yik Yak. Users post anonymous yaks and can read any yak within a mile radius of their locations. This is a location-based app, and it became popular on college campuses due to the relevancy and anonymity of community-specific conversations.

East China Normal University Ph.D student Minhui Xue was the paper’s lead researcher and said that he was interested in the topic to inform the public — not to expose the controversial posts on Yik Yak. “Even in the anonymous social network, people can still localize the posts you just sent,” Xue said.

“We have seen so many these cases released in the press in U.S. This motivates me to conduct the research on Internet privacy: de-anonymizing anonymous social network users.”

Their research revealed a way students can pinpoint general locations of the origin of the post, thus leading to the identity of the author: one can stand in a particular spot, see if a message is within their radius and then keep moving to determine where the message can and cannot be seen.

“So basically what happens is that

for a particular message at a particular location, the message will come up, but a location maybe 500 meters to the north, it won’t come up,” Ross said. “And maybe 300 meters to the south, it still comes up. And maybe 350 meters to the southwest it doesn’t come up. And we collect all that information, we can make a prediction from where the message was actually sent.”

Through this logic, the team created a program to determine location information much quicker.

The researchers conducted the study while in Shanghai, but tested their tools on the University of California, Santa Cruz campus through a fake GPS instrument — showing that anyone in the world could potentially track yakers’ locations.

“We’re not actually doing that physically or manually. There’s a program that runs that does all this for us: it changes the GPS location,

runs Yik Yak, collects the data,” Ross said. “But to create a pool like that, it does require some computer science skill.”

He said that while it takes a couple steps to reach this information and that most people could not create such technologically advanced conclusions, any computer science undergraduate student would be able to develop this tool.

After discovering this information, Ross said that they contacted Yik Yak about this possible flaw in their app.

“We informed Yik Yak about this, and they were quite concerned and so they’re currently working on ways to eliminate this problem,” Ross said. “I’ve been in contact with their CTO and they’re definitely quite concerned about this.”

WSN: Could you talk a little about your thoughts on the entire push for diversity in general then?

MR: A cis, white, straight male like myself is guilty of something. I don’t know what. But I’m fucking sure I’m guilty of it. There’s a one-downmanship that goes on. I despise it for the seeking after the most oppressed people position status that it involves, which just utterly and completely eradicates any possibility of solidarity. But one thing I want to make clear is that I am not against diversity. I’m against the university using diversity as an ideology to make themselves look ethical.

WSN: If it’s not solidarity, what kind of society are we creating?

MR: To try to create a polis or space free of that is a fool’s errand. It will

Oct. 6 to Oct. 18

By THE NEWS TEAM The NYU Department of Public Safety received reports of larceny, reports of controlled substance, reports of dating violence, reports of stalking, a report of burglary, a report of robbery, a report of simple assault and a report of rape between Oct. 6 and 18.

Larceny On Oct. 6 at 8:55 p.m. a student reported that at 6 p.m. she had secured her bike to the scaffolding in front of 726 Broadway and at 8:45 p.m. found that her bike was missing. A police report was filed.

On Oct. 10 at 6:31 p.m., a student reported that his wallet was missing from his jacket pocket, which was hanging over the back of his chair on the third floor lounge of the Basic Science Building. A police report was filed.

On Oct. 10 at 8:35 p.m. a student on campus reported that at 1 p.m. she left her bike secured to the Waverly Place bike rack and when she returned at 8:15 p.m. the bike was missing. A police report was filed.

On Oct. 13 at 3:05 p.m. a student in Palladium Residence Hall reported that between Sept. 7 and Oct. 7 various items went missing from her room. A police report was filed.

On Oct. 18 at 11:55 a.m. a patient at the Kriser Dental Center noticed that her wallet was missing. The wallet was found in a garbage bin with $22-$25 missing. The police was notified.

Trespassing On Oct. 14 at 6:49 p.m. an administrator reported that a male unaffiliated with NYU attempted to attend a lecture in the Genomics Building.

The male was escorted out but attempted to re-enter the building. He was apprehended by Public Safety.

Controlled Substance On Oct. 10 at 12:08 a.m. Public Safety responded to a report at Third Avenue North Residence Hall of an alleged controlled substance and found a small amount of marijuana.

On Oct. 10 at 1:00 a.m. Public Safety responded to a report of an illegal substance in Founders Hall.

They recovered a small amount of marijuana.

Rape On Oct. 12 at 2:30 p.m. a student reported that she was sexually assaulted by an NYU student in Founders Residence Hall during the fall of 2014.

Harassment On Oct. 6 at 11:32 p.m. a student reported that an unknown male verbally harassed her on West Third Street near Lipton Residence Hall. A police report was filed.

On Oct. 8 at 5 a.m. a student reported that his ex-girlfriend, who is an NYU student, would not leave his room at Alumni Hall. Police notification was declined.

How NYU Alerts Students of Financial Burden

Accepted students applying for financial aid in 2009 received a phone call from the university to address any discrepancies between financial aid awards and expected family contributions. These phone calls served to alert students of the large financial burden that an NYU education places on students and their families.

University spokesperson John Beckman said the phone calls were not meant to dissuade accepted students from attending NYU but rather to discuss the financial impact of their college decision.

“The phone calls were undertake[n] as an effort to urge students and families to consider the financial consequences of their college choice,” Beckman said. “It was a principled and helpful attempt to help them focus at a time of high emotion.”

The university discontinued these phone conversations within a year, since the outreach failed to substantially influence the decisions of NYU’s prospective students. They instead focused on improving financial aid and affordability.

“As valuable as it was to try to

arm people with information, no university can really substitute its judgment for a family’s decision-making on a complex set of trade-offs between finances, a student’s dreams and the many unique opportunities or programs a school may offer,” Beckman said.

“We think of an NYU education as an investment, and a good one, but we know it is a significant one.”

Although the phone outreach was not as effective as the university wished it was, CAS sophomore Althea Meer said she would have liked to see the phone calls continue, since communication demonstrates a high level of interest on the university’s behalf.

“While I appreciate the emphasis that NYU has placed on affordability, I do not think that the university should have discontinued directly addressing accepted students’ families who were not receiving enough financial aid relative to their expected family contribution,” Meer said. “I think it makes it more of a personal effort to call students and their families; the willingness to talk to families and provide direct contact regarding options for funding shows that the university cares.”

NYU’s total endowment (including NYU Langone Medical Center)

is $3.5 billion as of Aug. 31, 2015, and it only amounts to $89,000 per student — for ventures such as clubs, work compensation and renovations — after dividing the endowment by the student population. While this is smaller than the endowment of other large universities, Beckman said that NYU tries to provide all necessary financial background to accepted students to help them decide whether they can afford NYU. “Our financial aid program is there to assist people in affording an NYU education,” Beckman said.

“They offer all the aid NYU can right up front when they enter as freshmen, with financial need being the basis of virtually all of our aid.”

CAS sophomore Nina Bisbano said that because of the university’s limitations, the phone initiatives would not be very impactful on families’ ultimate decisions.

“While I understand that the university was trying to be more involved in the decision-making process of these students through the phone conversations, it seems unclear as to what the university could add to the conversation other than reiterating the financials,” Bisbano said. “The conversations regarding whether a student can

finances in an informed manner as part of their decision-making between April 1 and May 1,” Beckman said. “Where a student chooses to go to school is an intensely personal and complex decision for that student and his or her family; NYU doesn’t substitute its judgment for the family’s. We do try to make sure they are armed with the information they need to make an informed decision.”

The availability of financial aid is a major factor when choosing a college for many prospective students, yet often they are met with a disappointing figure.

Free Menstrual Hygiene Products Come to NYU

According to a recent census, 53 million adults in the United States — nearly one fifth of the country — live with a disability.

NYU students now have an option to study this issue through the new Steinhardt minor called Disability Studies.

This is a cross-school minor that combines activism and education, and according to the website, its interdisciplinary approach aims to educate students about the historical, social and legal factors that affect people with disabilities.

Steinhardt Associate Professor Mara Mills helped create this new track of study because she thinks that it is important for NYU students to have this educational opportunity.

“Disability is everywhere in literature and the media, but it’s often portrayed in biased and metaphorical terms,” Dr. Mills said. “Disability studies counters those misrepresentations, challenges stigma and works for greater accessibility and justice at both the local and international scales.”

She said that students pursuing this minor get a chance to enroll in classes pertaining to a variety of subjects: engineering, anthropol-

Anthropology professor Faye Ginsburg has a daughter with a rare disorder, so helping to develop the program was personal for her.

“We feel like there are a lot of people on this campus who are interested,” Ginsburg said. “We are continuing to hold events and do other things to try and make the campus a more disability friendly place. My personal mission has been the bathrooms — the bathrooms are really bad on campus.”

She said that even the bathrooms marked with the universal sign for disabilities are not universally accessible for people with disabilities.

Ginsburg said that even if somewhere is wheelchair-friendly, that does not equate to equal accessibility for someone who cannot use their hands.

Therefore, incorporating various schools and areas of discipline help consider and combat such issues.

While disability studies is a new minor, the courses taught under this new umbrella have existed for years.

Tandon graduate Shivani Desai is now a medical school student, and Desai said that she was impressed by the experiential nature of the disabilities studies course she took during her NYU undergraduate tenure.

“The classroom was a very good experience, primarily because you got to see how people with disabilities live,” Desai said. “We even had an opportunity to visit the center at Harlem to see how they engage in the day-to-day life.”

Her class was with Allan Goldstein, a senior lecturer in Tandon.

Goldstein also helped develop this new minor, and he said that having a sibling with an intellectual disability heavily defined his life.

“What we’re trying to get rid of is the pity and try to develop empathy and show that having a disability is not a tragedy — it is just a different way of living,” Goldstein said. “It’s a cuttingedge discipline.”

NYU students will no longer have to pay for menstrual hygiene products starting the Spring 2017 semester. They will be entirely free. Period.

On Friday, Oct. 21, NYU students leading the Tampon Tax movement announced that the university will begin providing students free menstrual hygiene products. According to the press release, this effort received support by Students for Sexual Respect at NYU, members of the Inter-Residence Hall Council and Women’s HERstory Month.

Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Marc Wais said that the university decided to convene a working group of students and staff to propose a pilot program by the end of the semester.

“The working group will be chaired

by Dr. Marcy Ferdschneider, Medical Director of the Student Health Center,” Wais said. “The working group will submit its recommendations to me. The university will assess the utilization and success of the pilot over the summer to determine how we move forward in the future.”

He said that this pilot program to provide free menstrual hygiene products to all students will begin in the spring semester at both the Manhattan and Brooklyn campuses.

According to the press release, the pilot program recommendations should be submitted to Wais by Friday, Dec. 23.

Gallatin junior Josy Jablons, who has led this fight on campus, said

that this decision was finalized at around noon on Thursday, Oct. 20, and this came after several levels of approval.

“It was more ‘overnight’ than you might think,” Jablons said. “Given the three-prong approach of our op-ed, petition and SSC resolution, the administration was forced to take note.”

She said that there was some behind-the-scenes conversation between administrative offices, such as the health center and student affairs, but Jablons said that she made it a point to include students in the discussion.

“In the case of MHPs, with the installment of this new working group, I think the administration is doing a great job of both empowering student leaders and also providing staff-members to support our needs,” Jablons said. “The fact that NYU has committed to funding the pilot program is a big step.”

Alum Short Film Tackles Prejudice

It is not hard to see the obvious Islamophobia in the United States right now. With Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump encouraging so much hate and racism, the role of Muslims and practitioners of Islam in American culture is still apparently up for debate.

The new short film “Dastaar” takes a hard look at such post-9/11 hatred. The project was written and directed by NYU Alum Javian Ashton Le, who graduated from the College of Arts and Science in 2009 and developed an interest in film during his junior year at NYU. While at school, Le had numerous conversations about Islamophobia in the U.S. with his roommate JD Singh, who has experienced it first-hand being a Sikh-American. During these conversations, Le’s focus switched from the specific violence that happens to Sikh-Americans to the intense fear that they constantly feel about being victims of such violence. The film’s title, “Dastaar,” refers to an article of faith among Sikhs that represents devoutness, valor and integrity.

While only 10 minutes in length, the film speaks volumes about racism and prejudice in America. The story follows Harpreet (Sathya Sridharan, Tisch MFA Acting ‘14), a young Sikh-American, and his girl-

friend Emily (Olivia Gilliatt, Tisch MFA Acting ’14), a young Caucasian woman. Taking place shortly after 9/11, Harpreet gets a call about his father being attacked. Throughout the film there are several hints and details that build up the fear Harpreet feels for his family and himself, enabling the audience to really understand the fear that underscores the protagonist’s life.

Sridharan gives an incredible performance. He establishes Harpreet’s fears in the most subtle, intense way. Sridharan was actually a friend of Le’s before production, and the role of Harpreet was created around him. His performance truly helps propel the film, enabling its political power.

Harpreet’s subtitles and small, surmounting nuances in the world help build the film’s emotion. The visual aesthetic created through the cinematography lends a big

hand as well. “Dastaar” is shot in a dark, grey tone that underscores Harpreet’s fears.

Interestingly enough, the production for the film took place before Trump announced his candidacy for president, although his campaign is a piece in a long line of Islamophobic views and tendencies that have been building ever since 9/11.

Remarkably, “Dastaar” addresses this racism in a real way, showing the antagonist characters as being more than just two-dimensional.

Rather than exaggerating or simply restating the discrimination, Le shows the everyday subtleties and fear of it.

“Dastaar” premiered earlier this year at South by Southwest and will be released on Vimeo and Short of the Week on Oct. 24.

In perhaps the most timely and relevant theater show of the season, writer and actor Clay McLeod Chapman produces and stars in “The Pumpkin Pie Show: Stump Speeches” at Under St. Marks Theatre. The show values a sadistic humor centered on the impending presidential election with Halloween-esque touches.

Chapman passes himself off as a parody of Donald Trump while debating Hillary Clinton, masterfully portrayed by Kristen Vaughan. The names of the two characters are changed, to avoid copyright issues: “Senator Pendleton” and “Senator Templeton” thus face off to the best of their caricatured abilities. Each candidate’s history and policies are mocked with a creepy Halloween flair — featuring mentions of blood and body parts using extremely detailed gore. The effect of this absurdity is what provokes laughter and makes the show so enjoyable.

In an interview with Rue Morgue, Chapman describes the show as “a melding of macabre fiction and live performance.”

He goes on to say it is “part storytelling session, part boxing match, part shamanistic ritual.”

Author Tim Murphy discusses gay activism through his new novel, “Christodora,” which revolves around the AIDS epidemic and drug addiction.

plays an ardent Pendleton supporter (i.e. Trump), who also happens to be madly and hopelessly in love with him. She talks about one of his rallies she attended, recalling how she does not remember a single thing he said but that it does not matter; it was the way in which he said it — like Pendleton was speaking right to you. Her obvious obsession draws out the audience’s laughter — mocking the supporters who do not pay attention to the words being said, but are instead entranced by the way in which they are delivered.

Pendleton’s main flaws circle around various stories of his illegal sexual affairs with young women, while Templeton’s biggest deterrent is her killing of uncorrupted, virginal boys for sacrifices to her campaign.

Templeton talks about how wonderful it is when the boys’ warm blood is spurted all over her face.

The in-depth, gruesome stories reach a climax when Pendleton admits to his campaign lies, “You won’t believe the shit that comes out of my mouth” and how he “serves up a turd” while simultaneously a fake wad of poop slithers out of his mouth. Templeton, too, admits to being two-faced and motions as if she is ripping off her face,

screaming, “Are you ready for my unveiling?!” After Pendleton admits he sold his soul to become the next president, the show concludes with the three other actors murmuring a spell which causes him to seize and die right there on stage.

“Pumpkin Pie Speeches” is an extremely vulgar show, both from its vicious mockery of the presidential campaign and from its Halloween-themed flairs.

However, it is vulgar in the very best way possible, all aimed at ridiculousness and humor. The actors, even though conveying ludicrous stories, captured the emotions of their characters amazingly; much so, in fact, that the absurdity of the show became almost believable.

It was incredible to watch such talent and raw emotion put into the storytelling of these outlandish characters. The element of horror in this live show rests in the acting: no lights, no sounds, no special effects. It was simply the actors’ words and emotions as they performed their roles.

“The Pumpkin Pie Show: Stump Speeches” will be running at Under St. Marks Theatre at 85 E 4th St. until Nov. 5.

In the rush of traffic jams and missed meetings, it’s all too easy to forget about the mythical beauty that surrounds New York City when you’re too caught up living in it. Tim Murphy’s latest novel, “Christodora,” is the latest work that takes the more fantastical elements of the city and grounds them indelibly in the reality of the city’s sometimes less-than-glittering past. On Oct. 19, Murphy visited The Strand Bookstore to host a reading and discussion for members of New York Magazine’s Vulture Insiders Book Club.

Murphy’s imaginative, deeply impactful novel focuses on the intertwining lives and time eras surrounding the East Village’s iconic building, the Christodora.

In his book, the time-woven structure is home to a young privileged and artistic couple, Milly and Jared, and their adopted son Mateo, whose birth mother died from AIDS. Their neighbors are a gay Puerto Rican man and a celebrated AIDS activist, who leads the life of a lonesome addict.

Murphy’s story unfolds as 1980s protesters become hipsters of the 2000s, who are then replaced by a city of glass towers overrun by the yuppies of the 2020s. Mateo and his parents wrestle with their past, their future, changes and growing up. Through the simultaneously alluring and destructive nature of drugs, the heartbreaking 1980s AIDS epidemic, gay activism and a coming of age story, Murphy’s captivating novel presents compelling realities about New York City’s past and future.

Murphy was joined by Vulture’s books editor, Boris Kachka, to delve into Murphy’s own experiences, the history of the Christodora and the writing process.

Murphy had been a reporter for 16 years and his writing focused on culture, politics, LGBT issues,

New York based events and the AIDS crisis.

“I dabbled before that and published two novels,” said Murphy humbly. “Getting Off Clean” and “The Breeders Box” were published soon before Murphy was diagnosed with HIV. Now, he has created a legacy with his third book, “Christodora.”

The process took “three and a half years for the first draft,” Murphy said. “It was another three years for editing, seeking agents and redrafting before it was published.”

After reading an enthralling chapter from the novel, Murphy explained the history behind his fascination with the Christodora.

“It was winter. I was walking past the park and the building was looming. There was something forbidding about it. I looked into the archives. The name Christodora means ‘gift of Christ.’ The history of the Christodora was that it began as a dump and was revived.

Later, rioters stormed the building, chanting ‘Die, yuppie scum.’”

The audience laughed, and Murphy chuckled. “These changes and different lives reflected the city, I thought.”

He explained his process of writing, describing the nature of time in the novel. “In terms of why it jumps around as far as time, I think I did that because I’ve lived [in New York City] for 25 years.

The city becomes dense. You walk around and find yourself somewhere you haven’t been in a while and memories flood back to you.

Suddenly it’s not 2016 anymore.

It’s 2000. I wanted to capture that element of the city in my book.”

As an activist, Murphy stated some of the major importances of the novel as it has impacted his readers. “What has been really gratifying is hearing from people who haven’t necessarily followed AIDS closely tell me after reading my book, ‘I had no idea.’”

Q&A: Daye Jack Is Hip-Hop’s Next Big Thing

There are endless ways to apply a computer science degree, but kick-starting your music career and getting signed by the venerable Max Martin (who’s produced music for names like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande) is surely one of the least common. Still, that’s exactly where NYU alumnus Daye Jack ended up. After releasing his debut EP while he was still a student in the College of Arts and Sciences computer science program, Jack’s fame quickly grew. Now he’s been signed by Martin and has just released his full-length album “Surf the Web” last week. Born in Nigeria, raised in Atlanta, graduated from NYU and now a familiar on the scene in Los Angeles, Jack’s on the fast track to stardom. Recently, he sat down with WSN to talk about his time at NYU and his experiences making his new album.

WSN: What do you think were the most valuable parts to you of being a student at NYU? Daye Jack: Before I went to NYU, I was living in the suburbs of Atlanta, in the suburbs of Atlanta county. It’s like every other suburb, pretty much the same thing — pretty sheltered. Moving to NYU,

for me, was moving to New York, the big city, and being around the energy where everyone’s always getting something done. People are fast-paced, so when you’re not working, you feel like you’re behind. You constantly have to be on your grind. And I also moved to a dorm where a lot of my friends and the people I got to meet were film students and other creatives.

So my first video, “Hello World,” off my first tape [also called “Hello World”] was just me and three other kids in my dorm. We rented out a room and we got some lights, a camera, rented some stuff and just shot the whole thing.

WSN: What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned while you were at NYU, either as a musician or as a person?

DJ: I think the most important lesson I learned was probably that you don’t have to fit into a box. I think college for me was comingof-age thing, where before that, especially being from the south and being from an area that was more close-minded, I almost thought that I had to fit into other people’s boxes.

WSN: Is there anything that, from your experience at the school, you’d like to see changed about it?

DJ: I felt like having more hubs

that combine the students. I think we kind of — at least with my friend group —- we kind of made that happen for ourselves. Like, you can have an art kid who’s really good at art, and another kid who does film, and another kid who does music, where like ... if there was an institutional thing that helped combine those kids, people could make fullfledged projects with them. It’s so easy — you’re coming to NYU to shoot film? Okay, let’s shoot a music video. Just those little things that reach beyond and combine kids. Because at the end of the day, when you finish your major, and enter the real world, that’s what you’re going to be doing. You’re not going to be working with just film kids or just music kids. You’re going to be trying to reach out to the kid who makes music, and then the art kid wants to make cover art for a song. Everything’s interconnected.

I think the school environment should be interconnected, too.

WSN: What are some of the coolest things you’ve learned since you got to start working with Max Martin and his crew?

DJ: A lot. I got to move from New York to L.A., and I’ve been there for the past year and a half. You know, being in Max’s camp, with a bunch of songwriters and producers who

are working on these big-level projects, whether it’s The Weeknd or Taylor Swift, it’s cool to see what it really takes on the songwriting side. Amazing ideas and amazing concepts — how to shape it into a song where someone else can listen to it and see, word for word, clearly what you’re thinking. It’s almost been a songwriting bootcamp. I’ve just been getting better at writing songs and expressing ideas more clearly. And from there, my previous projects I made predominantly in New York before anyone in L.A., like Max ... that other stuff before I met them was just me and my headphones, electronic, glitchedout, trippy. But when I moved out there to L.A., it was me trying to

tell the same stories, but in a more pop-oriented way.

WSN: Have you had fun with the pop format?

DJ: It’s really fun. Because we all have preconceptions of what’s pop, and at the end of the day, if you put your personality into it, it’s a tool.

It’s a tool to make sure your music can reach as many people as possible, [to make sure] your message can touch as many people as possible. It’s not really a genre to me; it’s more like a tool.

Searching for Genuine Sentiment

The tumultuous city of New York proved to be the ideal inspiration for young directors Charles Rogers and Sarah-Violet Bliss. The pair of NYU film graduates co-created “Search Party,” their new television series premiering on TBS on Nov. 21. They conducted an intimate cafe interview with WSN before an advanced screening of their pilot episode.

Rogers and Bliss described New York City as a “cultural cesspool” of strong characters and stories.

Drawing people from all corners of the world, this city brought the two young film students together in a thesis film course at NYU, and they have worked together ever since.

By coupling their shared passion for satire and an accurate “eye for bullshit,” Rogers and Bliss brought their talents, personal connections and love for Woody Allen to “Search Party.”

Knowing the nature of the competitive landscape of film and television, the creators of “Search Party” took a proactive, non-traditional approach to the pitch room. Rogers and Bliss worked independently with Jax Media to create and shoot a finished pilot with handpicked actors, including Alia Shawkat of “Broad City” as Dory, before even speaking to a network for feedback or funding. Their additional autonomy allowed the two directors to

illustrate their complete vision for the project, accurately showcasing their style and the direction of the series — an unconventionality that TBS embraced.

The creators describe their series as “true,” due to the organic nature of the entire creative process. Dory and her fellow characters each reveal personal weaknesses and illuminate uncomfortable issues, all in the particular style of each actor and their character. Brandon Hall, a guest at the screening, who plays the character Julian, told the audience that while on set, Rogers would tell him to “just let it go” and to not worry about the form, technique or artificiality of a script.

“Search Party” embraces the actors’ individuality, a detail that is evident in the truth of the stories and the genuine emotion present in each scene.

The show goes far beyond millennial satire and commentary, as it is actually categorized as a dark

comedy. Bliss elaborated on this label, explaining that the dark side comes from two places. The first is the “rabbit hole” murder-mystery that the clan embarks on, full of blood and foreboding danger, and its darkness is also found in the emotionality that makes the viewer aware of their own limits and biases: a confrontation that can be troublesome yet clarifying.

Rogers and Bliss see their success stemming from the trust they share amongst themselves, their coworkers and their actors. The layers of personalities, patience with the creative process and teamwork on set is what created the show’s harmonious blend of satire and mystery. A unique and modern outlook on television series, “Search Party,” with its admirable wit, depth and darkness, is already on its way to success.

CAS Senior Adds Twist to Noodle Bar

An unassuming storefront on First Avenue gives way to the lively and fragrant atmosphere of new East Village restaurant The Tang, a contemporary noodle bar that draws on the traditional roots of its owners, two of whom are current CAS senior Yu Li and SPS alum Eric Sze. The Tang, which opened its doors on July 21, has seen a well-deserved positive reaction from the community, boasting four stars on Yelp and almost 2,000 followers on Instagram.

Sze, the chef, explained that the restaurant is still in its early stages.

“We have our slow days, we have hectic days,” Sze said. “We’re really pretty much still trying to figure things out. But today versus three months ago, things are definitely easier.”

The Tang, despite its newness, knows what it wants to achieve: a balance between modernity and tradition. “Authentic flavor with a modern New York twist” is its manifesto. Li, who manages the restaurant's operations, came up with the original concept for the noodle bar.

“I had a favorite noodle shop back in Beijing close to my home,” Li said. “They had just introduced the steamed noodles. I wanted to create something similar. Initially I wanted to open more traditional flavors, like the Beijing style. Then I reached out to [Sze] and we decided to create a more contemporary noodle shop, so came The Tang.”

This contemporary and traditional mix is well-established through The Tang’s menu. The pork belly string bean steamed noodles are a

bestseller at The Tang, and Sze explained how he gets the powerful punch of flavor the noodles bring to the dish.

A soy stock is created from string beans and ground pork and placed into a wok with raw noodles. The noodles are steamed until the stock is reduced into a sauce and then tossed in that sauce. Two pieces of rich pork belly top the dish off. The noodles are fragrant and aromatic, packing in twice the flavor because of the steaming method, and the sauce is rich in flavor — it’s a bestseller for a reason.

But as much as Sze loves the pork belly string bean steamed noodles, he recommends the sizzling noodles.

“It’s kind of a blend of Chongqing and Sichuan,” Sze said. “The spices are more Sichuan. I use some garlic powder and cayenne pepper, kind of an homage to the American south. The chili powder itself looks like dry rub. But the technique I picked up from Xi’an, pouring sizzling hot oil over the noodles, over the spices, hence sizzling noodles.”

Running a restaurant with growing popularity is no easy feat, however, and finding the balance between work and school can be tough. Li, who is in his last year at NYU studying computer science and economics, describes his days as busy but manageable.

“I go to school two full days, I get off at five,” Li said. “I come back at night, check the food, make sure everything is okay. I go home at 10 or 11, I squeeze a little bit of time to do my homework. It’s okay, I only have five more classes, so I’m getting there.”

In light of the recent boom in the popularity of consignment shopping, three huge names in consignment held a panel, “Resale, Consign, Subscribe: Concepts That are Redefining How People Shop” to discuss their experiences in business, the challenges they have faced and the direction in which they believe retail is headed.

Kristin Kohler Burrows (CEO and President, Second Time Around), Ruth Hartman (CMO, Le Tote) and Jyothi Rao (President, INTERMIX) presented their panel for students in the Fall 2016 Practicum in Fashion Business taught by Guess Visiting Professor in Fashion Business Harold Brooks, and Gallatin faculty member Lise Friedman.

These three companies and other similar brands are revolutionizing the way people shop. Consignment offers high-quality goods in a variety of styles for much lower prices than retail stores do, and “preloved” clothes can be incredibly fashionable and unique.

INTERMIX offers high-quality designer fashion consigned, curated and then sold at discounted prices online and at 43 locations across the United States. Second Time Around has been around for over 35 years, making it a staple in consignment shopping, and it maintains 40 boutiques across the country — many of them in New York.

Le Tote has come to be known as

the “Netflix of fashion,” delivering top brands right to the consumer’s doorstep and demonstrating the incredible success of the subscription model in a totally new arena.

“Due to your experiences in the fashion industry as a senior executive at Macy’s and DSW, do you see any major differences between working for a department store and a young online business?” One student asked Hartman.

“Only everything,” Hartman said, “which is one of the reasons I wanted to do that to test myself as well as really learn.” She described her experience at Macy’s as a great training ground, but she said that she prefered working at a start-up because that meant fewer rules and more flexibility.

Rao chimed in, saluting her foundational experience at Gap and Calvin Klein.

“A startup requires an appetite for risk and innovation, which is the most liberating and exciting part about working for one” Rao said when describing the creative spirit that goes into a newer venture.

When asked about the direction in which they think fashion is headed, all three agreed that the future of retail industry is about catering directly to the consumer’s needs.

“This is truly the age of the consumer. They have all the power,” Rao said. Burrows described it as something she refers to as “W-Commerce”: getting the consumer what they want “wherever — whenever.” All three panelists shared valuable experiences that any young entrepreneur could benefit from.

On The Job: Eight-Hour Shift at Trader Joe’s

Most NYU students are familiar with the Trader Joe’s on 14th Street, which sits right next to Palladium Hall and constantly stays crowded, serving hundreds of customers every day. But how does it feel to be on the other side, working in one of busiest grocery stories in the country?

“It sometimes feels like a lot,” Naomi Markman, a Gallatin junior who works there, said.

Markman, who studies Political, Social and Cultural Analysis for Television in Gallatin, works in the Trader Joe’s store on 14th Street every Thursday through Sunday. Her shift starts at 5 p.m. and doesn’t finish until 1 a.m. When she returns to her dorm, she is exhausted and jumps directly into bed. This is just how she likes it.

“I am the kind of person who prefers when I have too much to do than to have not enough to do,” Markman said. “If I don’t have anything to do, I will just stay in my room all day, possibly all year.”

Each shift, Markman spends a few hours working at the cash register — her favorite assignment because she gets to meet all kinds of people. Of the many NYU students who shop at Trader Joe’s, Markman sometimes sees old floor mates or classmates. But these shoppers are not nearly as exciting as the celebrities who sometimes show up to the store. On her birthday this past year, Markman crossed paths with former SNL cast member Rachel Dratch.

Markman has regulars, too. One elderly woman who doesn’t speak English always finds Markman to help her find products in the store.

Markman said that they gesture and yell in their respective languages until she figures out what the woman is seeking. In return, the woman gives Markman Korean cigarettes, which she passes along to her coworkers because she doesn’t smoke.

In addition to Korean cigarettes, customers have also shared recipes with Markman.

“One time I was struggling to cook Brussels sprouts,” Markman

said. “My mom cooks them very well, but she won’t give me her recipe. Whenever there were customers with Brussels sprouts checking out, I would ask them, ‘Do you have a tip on how to make these?’

Now I’m an expert.”

When asked whether there are bad customers, Markman laughed and said that she sometimes gets hit on by men. Occasionally, customers express frustration when the store is too crowded or runs out of things they need.

“I try not let that ruin my day if I get a bad customer,” Markman said. “Everyone has a bad day now and then.”

Despite her busy school and work schedules, Markman still makes time to connect with her friends and has an especially strong relationship with her roommates.

“I come home during lunch hour and use that time to socialize with my roommates,” she said. “If I’m not at work and have big chunks of time, I will do schoolwork. Before going to work, I use as much time as I can, like time between classes and lunch.”

Inspired by Eater’s Journal Series, Washington Square News thought it would be interesting to chronicle the daily meals of an NYU student. Here are some of my most notable meals this week.

A Weird Assortment of Leftover Hors d’Oeuvres from a Morgan Stanley Event in Kimmel I work in Kimmel’s media office, so whenever there’s free food left over from any of the events that day, we usually get to eat it.

There was a pretty good assortment of finger foods, including mini crab cakes, tiny pulled pork sandwiches, spanakopita and a variety of egg rolls. I tried them all with some of my coworkers in the Rosenthal kitchen. The tiny crab cakes were soggy and the egg rolls tasted vaguely of chemicals, but it was free food. The winners were definitely the mac and cheese bites, which I had way too many of, and the little sandwiches.

A Burrito from Kimmel Dining Hall Even though I don’t have a meal plan this year, I do have very sweet friends who sometimes swipe me at dining halls. I really wanted stir fry but the line was pretty crazy, so I got a burrito. It was just okay — I didn’t hate it by any means, but it was not as good as the burrito I had had from Dos Toros earlier this week. I doused it in hot sauce

I picked this up from the Nolita location after my classes ended and ate it at home while watching an episode of Veep. I love Xi’an because it really focuses on strong flavors, freshly prepared food and low prices. It was spicy, delicious and very filling. The pork, cabbage, scallions and chives worked really well together, and the noodles were divine. I don’t really like cucumber, so I picked around that.

The low point of this meal was that I got chili oil all over my laptop, but that could be attributed to user error.

A Turkey Sandwich After realizing I was spending a copious amount of money on food this week, I went to Trader Joe’s and bought boring, practical groceries. A result of that was this sandwich: two slices of wheat bread (not sure why I bought this — I hate bread that tries to be healthy), turkey, mayo and cheese.

I was conflicted about whether to put one or two slices of cheese on the sandwich — one didn’t really cover the whole thing, but two slices could potentially be too much cheese. I impulsively threw on two slices and hoped for the best. I ate the sandwich, smashed

A Slice of Pizza from Search Party Screening I went to a screening of a new TBS series called “Search Party” in Kimmel. They gave out free pizza, which was an added bonus because I hadn’t eaten dinner yet.

The best part was the boxed water they gave out with the pizza: the little cartons had Alia Shawkat (the star of the series and, coincidentally, the love of my life) printed on the back. The pizza itself was actually really bad — the cheese was kind of burnt, hard and melded together, it was oily and the crust was tough. But for the millionth time this week — free food!

Overall reflections: Wow! I eat no vegetables. I’m pretty unhealthy.

I’ll eat anything if it’s free.

Donning a statement lip can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Lipwear has blown up in mainstream media (thanks, Kylie Jenner), and there are now companies that are entirely devoted to making nothing but lip products.

This obsession has run wild as we see new colors and formulas gracing the streets of New York City.

Gone are the classic shades of pink, red and orange. Today you’ll find lipcolor in shades of teal, yellow, black and even metallic. Designers like Anna Sui, Rodarte and Thom Browne showcased this bold, new statement lip on their runways at Fashion Week this fall.

If it feels a bit much to wear this trend to class, how about a statement lip that matches your skin tone? If your skin has cooler undertones, stick with colors in the pink or blue family. For warmer olive skinned students, try a lip color with orange or warm peach undertones.

To make lips look their best, make sure that they’re not chapped.

Lining your lips with the color of your lip product or using a clear lip liner will also prevent your lipstick from feathering and wearing off after a long day of classes. So exfoliate dry lips, drink lots of water, use a lip balm with SPF, apply lip liner and rock that statement lip with confidence.

When going for a bold lip, make sure the rest of your makeup is subtle. By keeping the rest of your

makeup minimalistic, your statement lip will be the focus of your look, and you also won’t look like you’re trying too hard. So, if you want to try out that black, liquid lipstick for class, blaze that trail. After all, you’re at NYU, where eccentricity is not only accepted but revered.

People think that you have to have a lot of confidence if you wear a red, turquoise or black lip. Then again, do we know what really comes first? Is it the statement lip or the confidence?

If you want to wear a statement lip to class, go for it. It is, after all, a form of self-expression less permanent than that biomechanical tattoo, more colorful than your all black wardrobe and cheaper than any unique pair of shoes.

While discussions of diversity and privilege often arise on campus, one privilege is often overlooked — citizenship. The DREAM Team at NYU tries changing that by focusing on bringing awareness and help to students without documentation.

CAS senior Tomas Cruz joined the club his freshman year and said that he fully committed to it during his sophomore year, once he settled into college life. He now serves as the president and leads a large portion of the club’s operations.

“The DREAM Team, in general, seeks to be advocates for/with the undocumented community at NYU and at large,” Cruz said.

“Some of us are just allies, a couple have identified as undocumented, but all of us have a personal connection or concern with the undocumented community and the issues they face, and as a result, want to be of use.”

He said that the club is trying to broaden the groups it works with to reach more people while learning about the different identities and intersectionalities that undocumentation affects. Cruz said that this year, the club is attempting to get younger students to participate, since the DREAM Team largely consists of seniors.

“Two big events we’re hosting this semester are Contra-Cuentos: a night of performances showcasing Latinx artists who are/were immigrants or undocumented,” Rodriguez said. “We’re also trying to organize an event with various other clubs about the humanization of Syrian refugees. We’re looking for experts to speak about things like the impact displacement and trauma have on refugees’ mental health.”

Their efforts have seen results, including the financial aid program for undocumented students — Rodriguez was proud of this effort and said that DREAM Team even received a shoutout in the pilot program’s announcement. Even though progress was made, she said that there is still a long way to go, with goals such as educating financial aid advisors about how to navigate paying for college as a student without documentation still to be met. And they hope to enact more change again this Wednesday when they speak with administration.

“We’ve been focusing most of our energy on our presentation about the undocumented experience for about 30 folks from the office of financial aid/admissions,” Rodriguez said.

Personal Attacks Dumb Down Political Discourse

It’s no secret that American politics are becoming increasingly polarized, with moderates slowly disappearing as Democrats shift further left and Republicans shift further right. As a result, animosity between liberals and conservatives is on the rise. A clear example of this can be seen in our presidential debates, in which the candidates seem to focus more on undermining each other’s credibility than discussing policies — and in some instances, literally throwing insults. This shift towards politicians attacking each other as opposed to attacking issues has its consequences, ones

that today’s young voters must face. The increased polarization of American politics is an issue, especially when its effects include increased political inactivity and unproductive discussions that lead to no progress.

When presidential candidates continue to attack each other, voters begin to focus on who they personally like more instead of whose issues they agree with the most. This is alarming, especially when the current two candidates are both viewed as very untrustworthy. Though some voters have begun to look further into thirdparty candidates as alternatives, others, dissatisfied with their options, choose not to vote at all.

Such voters include a handful of

Bernie Sanders supporters, comprised of primarily young voters. But when the youth — especially college-aged voters, known already for their political inactiveness — feel deterred from voting, an entire portion of the population is not represented in American politics. Young voters, disenchanted with the state of politics, are choosing to pass when it’s their turn and wonder

why they are still discontented with the political game.

In addition, with a decrease in the focus on issues and an increase in combativeness, animosity brews, with Republicans and Democrats both believing the other to be immoral, closeminded and lazy. When we can’t have an educated discussion without turning to ad hominem arguments, polarization will continue to create an increase in partisanship. By resorting to attacking each other rather than trying to understand each other’s point of view and educating each other, we lose the potential of progress in our politics. Today’s youth is on its way to becoming tomorrow’s politicians,

but unproductive discussions, whether they be inside or outside the classroom, will end up passing on Congress’s gridlock to the next generation as well.

Today’s youth, by choosing not to participate, are ultimately going to grow up in a world that they did not vote for. We need to take a step back and reevaluate the issues. We need to learn to have open discussion, one in which judgment is not cast upon those on the other side of the political spectrum, because otherwise, we’ll be no better than the do-nothing Congress we see today.

Trump Tapes Trample Progress in Sexual Assault Awareness

By CARA ZAMBRANO Staff Writer While Donald Trump has been trying to portray himself as the true victim in the wake of the release of the lewd “Access Hollywood” tapes, he has actually reopened a fresh wound in American consciousness. By trivializing his sexual comments, Trump is forgetting that sexual assault is a real problem and he is only aggravating the true issue at hand.

Most of the women who have accused Trump of sexual assault in the aftermath of this tape were young at the time of the alleged assaults. This only reinforces the research showing that young women — and in particular, col-

lege-aged women, as some of them were — are more vulnerable to these disgusting acts of sexual violation. Despite the sobering statistic that one in every five women will be sexually assaulted during their undergraduate years, roughly 90 percent of these occurrences will not be reported.

This is often due to the fact that the victims can get scared of the report’s consequences on their personal and professional lives.

Campus assault is also a serious issue. Not only is it incredibly underreported, but the few allegations that are brought to light can often be dismissed or trivialized by university officials out of fear thatthey could damage the school’s image.

However, most universities are implementing stricter sexual assault policies — like an insistence on the importance and meaning of consent — and some, like NYU, even offer mandatory sexual misconduct courses for students, which are a well-intentioned attempt to decrease the occurrences of sexual assault on campus. However, it is somewhat ironic that as college

students are being encouraged not to be bystanders of sexual assault, Trump is championing the belief that women’s accusations should not be taken seriously.

He is not only undermining the consequences of sexual assault by trying to defend himself, but he is also diminishing the efforts of raising awareness of a problem that haunts women of all ages everywhere.

Sexual assault — including campus sexual assault — is finally a mainstream topic of conversation, and it should continue as such, as it will never be enough to just underline how wrong it is in practice and how harsh its consequences are for the victim. The “Access Holly-

wood” tapes confirmed that the megalomaniac and misogynistic character of Donald Trump will never understand the fear that accompanies a woman when she walks home alone, on campus and off. He will probably never even understand the whirlwind of emotions that he has imposed on his victims. In a society in which young people are becoming increasingly aware and vocal about such violations, this kind of backwards thinking cannot be accepted. Sexual assault is not “locker-room talk” — it never will be — and it must not be treated as such.

NYU Leadership Initiative Bridges a Gap

By CONNOR BORDEN Staff Writer NYU’s Leadership Week, during which students had the opportunity to participate in personal development and skill-building events, goes unnoticed by far too many. It is important to reflect on the state of student leadership at NYU. Everyone wants to be a leader, but there are not enough resources to accommodate. While there are many opportunities to get involved at NYU, such as Program Board, Inter-Residence Hall Council, Class Activities Board or Leadership Fellows, there are far fewer resources exclusively dedicated to students wishing to develop their own

ideas of leadership and practice these skills.

The NYU Leadership Initiative is an institution on campus whose aim is to create a network among students who have a commitment to improving the world around them.

Founded in 2013, the Leadership Initiative is just now getting its own physical space on campus. It is split into three offices: the Reynolds Program for Social Entrepreneurship, the Office of Global Awards and the Leadership Development Office at NYU Stern. With outstanding staff and students, the Leadership Initiative is truly searching to take root on campus and promote itself and its missions through efforts such as Leadership Week.

Through practice-based programs

such as workshops or the Leadership Fellows, the Initiative promotes community development. Often, discussion surrounds impact and how the learned techniques or abilities can be used for lasting benefits.

Whereas institutions such as NYU’s Stern School of Business prioritize networking and skill development related to leadership, they also lack the strong, intentional attention to help our communities. Institutions

based on service and social justice, such as the Center for Student Activities, Leadership and Service and or the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs, lack strong leadership development, but the Leadership Initiative takes a vigorous approach to examining the intersections of social responsibility and leadership. The word leadership itself has an ambiguous definition: “the action of leading a group of people or an organization, or the ability to do this.” Students are encouraged to think about leadership in terms of themselves and their experiences, discovering their own definitions and applications of a skill so central to any graduate school or career efforts. The Initiative narrows the definition as such: “the process

of working ethically and inclusively to invent the future.”

In its work as a student interest office, it fulfills its duties many times over by empowering students to take charge of directing their lives and experiences here at NYU and into their post-graduation careers.

With an outlook that searches to combine the missions of groups like Stern, CSALS and CMEP — not to exclude the many amazing institutions on campus working toward similar goals — the Leadership Initiative has the potential to help NYU students bridge the gap between activism and the lack of meaningful leadership experience.

WikiLeaks Works Best Illegally

By HENRY COHEN Contributing Writer A phrase often tossed around in classrooms and living rooms is “you are entitled to your opinion.” This is a lie. As author Harlan Ellison once said, “You are entitled to your informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant.” Clearly, this makes more sense. We demand that teachers, scientists and politicians all know what they are talking about, so why is it that we give so much leeway when it comes to people’s opinions on science and politics?

This question is important because of the recent backlash to the glut of political emails released through WikiLeaks, an organization advocating for radical transparency, or a system where the public is fully informed about its government.

Political commentators have slammed the site for being biased against the Clinton campaign, since the email leaks have almost exclusively hurt Clinton and the Democratic Party, as well as for colluding with the Russian government to acquire information. Opponents of

the site claim that its whistleblowing does more harm than good, and that we should not allow their leaks to affect the election. While it is absolutely fair to look down on WikiLeaks for its questionable methods and bias, the fact is that this information deserves to be exposed. A fair election is only legitimate if the electorate is informed, and with every released email, WikiLeaks brings us closer to that ideal of radical transparency.

Their recent work revealed that DNC officials were critical of Bernie Sanders’ campaign during the primaries, that Clinton pandered to her audiences in paid speeches to Wall Street banks and that Clinton’s stance on climate change hinged more on poll numbers than principle. Whether or not these revelations affect the average voter on a personal level, they still

help to create a more informed public, which leads, ultimately, to a more democratic election.

WikiLeaks may have used dodgy methods to get this information, but when political campaigns are so secretive, there is no other option.

WikiLeaks is designed to host documents that were never supposed to be made public, and so by the very nature of its mission it must operate — to some extent — outside the law. Like the hacker collective Anonymous, WikiLeaks’ best work can often only be done when it is explicitly illegal, which is why WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and famous WikiLeaks contributor Edward Snowden have both been forced to flee the the countries in which they had been living and seek refuge.

Rather than criticize WikiLeaks for a lack of journalistic integrity that it never claimed to have, we should be thankful that there exists at least one independent organization dedicated to telling the public things we deserve to know.

Partisan WikiLeaks Are Not Democratic

The last few weeks of the presidential campaign have rarely had a day free of scandal or intrigue. The emergence of WikiLeaks — and by extension, Russia — as a major player, as far as dominating the news and dictating the national conversation, numbers among the most alarming developments in this election cycle. Never before in modern history has a foreign entity so blatantly attempted to interfere with and influence American politics. The fact that the leaks have even occurred is bad enough, but the problem is compounded by much of the media, who have reported on them mercilessly and drawn the information gleaned from them — true or not — into the mainstream. While the American people are entitled to know as much about their political candidates as they possibly can, stolen emails and documents accessed illegally — which have no way of ever truly being verified — have no place in the democratic process.

might never be fully understood. But it is clear to see that all three of these men, and the ideas they represent, do better when their opponents or enemies are being forcibly weakened.

Hillary Clinton was correct when she argued that Trump was effectively operating as Putin’s puppet. Take the already established relationship between the Kremlin and WikiLeaks, factor in the Trump component, and what materializes is a toxic cycle of mutual malfeasance.

There is a glaringly obvious argument to be made in support of WikiLeaks — that America has a great tradition of uncovering and exposing controversial information in the name of public interest. This is undoubtly true and thus, much of the mainstream news media is covering the latest leaks as if they were a triumph of investigative journalism

rather than unlawfully seized personal emails. The distinction between the two must be recognized, or the press risks setting a very dangerous precedent. The leaked emails, be they among members of the Democratic National Committee or from Clinton aide John Podesta, ought to be viewed for what they actually are — stolen property.

One of the best reactions to the latest batch of leaked emails has come from a law professor by the name of Lawrence Lessig, who was negatively referenced in one of the many messages. Rather than condemn whoever sent the insult-laden email, Lessig spoke out in their defense, asserting that these leaks were not intended to serve public interest, but rather to malign and embarrass certain individuals in order to foster acrimony. Like Lessig, other high-profile figures, especially in the media, have a responsibility to denounce WikiLeaks for their unabashedly ill-intended actions. This information is simply not legitimate, and nobody knows who the next target will be.

Students Must Offer More Than Slogans, Signs

There has never been a shortage of protests on campus, and the average NYU student is bound to encounter at least one public demonstration in Washington Square Park over the course of a semester. Beginning with the early September Rally For Standing Rock against the Dakota Access Pipeline, and most recently with the successful efforts of Students for Sexual Respect at NYU, students have been true to their characteristically outspoken and outraged selves. Activism, by on-campus groups and national organizations, have always had a home on NYU’s grounds. Students will of course want to get involved, but are sometimes prone to simply hopping on the protest bandwagon.

That is not always a problem, since movements with huge numbers of supporters will always receive more visibility, but it does sometimes lend itself to creating a culture of slacktivism.

Many protests focus on increasing just awareness, but that is not always the most effective way of getting concrete results.

Awareness is just the beginning. Students who participate in activist groups and protests should make sure their causes and petitions are converted to something more than short-lived mass demonstrations.

All different types of causes are valid, but not all forms of protests are created equal. Holding up signs and chanting can certainly draw attention to a particular cause, but more is needed in order to spur real change, such as new legislation. The Incarceration to Education Coalition’s successful sit-in, for example, led to planned meetings with NYU administration and Common App and eventual reforms to the university’s application process. The NYU community is full of people with diverse skills and unique access to resources. In order to be successful, it is imperative that different groups harness these abilities and turn their slogans and signs into real, innovative progress. It does not happen overnight, but change is possible when issues are approached in a pragmatic manner.

None of this is to dismiss those who participate in protests or so-called armchair activism. People who work hard to raise awareness through social media or more active means should be lauded, but presenting a formal plan of action, with benefits and potential, is a much more significant step forward.

Every student at NYU, by utilizing their unique skills, can bring something new to the table. If you’re a filmmaker, shoot a documentary. If you’re a business or law major, get involved in an organization that champions your cause. Rather than pursuing political activism impersonally through protests and social media, use your passions to enact tangible change. During our times as students, there has arisen a record amount of interest in student activism and students should be capitalizing on that interest. And with NYU’s hotbed of student talent, the next generation of activists are bound to come up with more creative ways to enact change.

By MADDIE HOWARD Staff Writer As a freshman athlete it can be difficult to come in and make a big difference on the team. It is hard being completely new to the city-school environment and also performing at the absolute best in a sport. However, firstyear diver Carmen White has it all figured out.

White is a two-time winner of the UAA Athlete of the Week for Swimming and Diving. She is also currently undefeated in the one-meter event, helping the Violets to win at their first two meets.

She began her career during her freshman year at Lake Forest High School in Illinois.

There, she helped the team to a second in-state finish her senior season. She also earned herself 14th place individually as a junior and fifth as a senior.

“My biggest influence in my diving career is my old coach, Pam, who knew exactly what to tell me no matter the mood I was in,” White said. “I attribute my success to my former coaches and current coach, Todd, for pushing me to my limits allowing me to be where I am today.”

Head Diving Coach Todd Kolean was one of the main reasons she decided to continue her career at NYU. “I decided to dive at NYU because I felt my coach, Todd, could take my diving to the next level allowing me to be competitive collegially,” White said.

Clearly, the help of Kolean and the rest of the NYU swimming and diving staff has paid off for White thus far. Her weekly schedule is packed with practices and lifts almost

everyday, ensuring that she maximizes her time in the diving pool and prepares to crush the competition.

Outside of the pool, Carmen is heavily influenced by her mom, who has been by her side tirelessly throughout her diving career. Though the school is quite aways from the Chicagoland area, the support of her family remains strong.

“My biggest influence in my life is my mom,” White said.

“She is always supporting me and cheering me on.”

Being so far from home can be quite difficult for freshman athletes, who are typically used to the constant reassurance and help from their family members inside the arena no matter the sport. This is often where the presence of their new team comes into play, which serves as their new family and support network. White describes her fellow team members as some-

Soccer Dominates in Brooklyn

After dropping a match to the Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, the NYU women’s volleyball team traveled to New Jersey Friday to compete against Montclair State University. Determined and looking to rebound, the Violets were stymied, losing in four sets (25-23, 20-25, 2025, 26-28) to drop to 14-12 on the season.

The action was competitive throughout, with the largest margin of victory in any set being just seven points. The Violets built a 16-11 lead in the first set, but Montclair State answered, eventually narrowing the gap to 24-23.

But a timely error by Montclair State’s Madison Maute gave the Violets an early edge.

Undeterred, Montclair State started the second set with a quick 11-6 lead of their own, but like the first set, the margin didn’t last as the Violets tightened the gap to one point at 15-14. But Montclair responded and established a lead strong enough to take the set. It was more of the same in the third, as Montclair State took its second consecutive set by the same score. “So far it has taken a bit of getting used to — balancing school with diving and getting accustomed to living in New York,” White said. “Although it can be stressful at times, it’s nice to know that you have a team supporting you along the way.

My favorite part of NYU so far is being on a team that I can call my family.”

Young athletes like White are what make NYU varsity sports so successful. It gives them the chance to show their worth and that they can truly stand out at the collegiate level. White hopes to continue to stand out for the next four years.

Women’s volleyball played a close match against Montclair State, with junior Rayne Ellis and two other teammates each achieving double-digit kills. in the fourth, scoring the first six points of the set. However, Montclair State returned the favor, as the two teams traded points deep into the set. Leading 23-17, the Violets gave up six straight points to Montclair State, tying the set and setting the stage for a furious finish.

The teams remained tied at 26 before Montclair State took the decisive two points on a service ace and attack error by freshman outside hitter Caroline Rapp to finish things off.

The stats illustrate the competitiveness of the match. The Violets led in blocks (10-3) and digs (63-57) while Montclair State finished with more kills (55-51), aces (7-5), and assists (52-49). On the Violets’ side, junior middle blocker Rayne Ellis and sophomore Gretchen Cash combined for 27 kills. Ellis also led the team with seven blocks, while sophomore setter Daryl Mitchell finished with 25 assists — a tally topped

by Montclair State’s Ashley Griffith, who finished with a whopping 46. Though pleased by the effort and moments of dominance in the match, Ellis believes the Violets need to be more consistent.

“We played hard but we won’t be able to pull out a win until we’re able to pull together all the pieces at the same time,” Ellis said. “So we’re focusing on the details so that next weekend we’re able to be more confident and play as a team.”

With the UAA Championship looming at the start of November, the Violets are back in action next Friday and Saturday as they host the New York Region Challenge at the Hunter Sportsplex in Manhattan.

It was an exciting Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn for the NYU men’s soccer team as it traveled to Flatbush to take on the Cardinals from York College.

The Violets got off to a dominant start with three goals in the first ten minutes. Senior Bryan Walsh opened the scoring with an eighth minute goal off an assist from Captain Petter Aasa. Sophomore Robert Shellow doubled the Violets’ lead just one minute later, and Walsh recorded his second goal off a rebound in the 10th minute of play.

Goals from sophomore Simone Kanter and senior Michael Cheaney extended the NYU lead to 5-0 with just minutes to play in the first half.

The halftime break did not slow down the Violets, who continued to dominate. Sophomore midfielder David Victor extended the lead to six goals, converting a penalty kick just one minute into the half.

Sophomore Evan Reifsnyder scored his second goal of the season in the 49th minute. Six minutes later, freshman forward Drew Enyedi tapped in a beautiful cross from junior Greg Suter for NYU’s eighth goal of the game. The next 20 minutes saw the Cardinals record their one shot of the game and hold off NYU’s attack. However, the Violets were just too strong and added to the lead in the 72nd minute with freshman Julian Montilus scoring his first career goal with a chip shot over the keeper. Drew Enyedi added another in the 78th minute securing NYU’s 10-0 victory.

NYU completely out-classed the

Cardinals with a 42-2 shot advantage, forcing York’s goalkeeper to make a dozen challenging saves while putting 10 past him. NYU’s goalkeepers senior Lucas Doucette and sophomore Grant Engel weren’t forced to make any saves and recorded a clean sheet. NYU also recorded four more corner kicks than the Cardinals and drew and converted a penalty kick.

The win moves the Violets record to 7-6-2 on the season.

Junior defender Gregory Suter was excited after the dominating victory, “Today was a nice way to cap off our non-conference play and served as a nice tune up for our games the next two weekends,” Suter said, “It was nice to see Michael Cheaney get his first career goal.”

The Violets look to build off Sunday’s dominant performance as they resume UAA play at Gaelic Park next weekend, hosting the University of Rochester on Friday and Emory University on Sunday afternoon.

Benedict Translates Winning Attitude to Pitch

While New York has only been her home for two short months, freshman forward Alex Benedict is already standing out in the big city. With an 8-3-3 record, Benedict and the rest of the NYU women’s soccer team are starting off strong this season.

“We’ve been training pretty hard,” Benedict said. “We always have to bring intensity to every practice which, I mean, is expected when you’re on a sports team. But the way we practice definitely reflects the way we play. We’ve been struggling a little bit to finish lately but we ended that this week so we’re hoping to continue that.”

As a newcomer in the world of collegiate athletics, Benedict and her fellow freshmen were slightly apprehensive about facing their intense new opponents.

“There are five field-playing freshmen and we all play a number of minutes every game. We

haven’t really hit the weight room before, so going against kids that have been lifting for four years can be a little bit intimidating. But I think that we handle it really well,” she said.

Benedict may not be as experienced as the teams she goes up against, but that doesn’t stop her from running the field. As she gains more opportunities to contribute during her games, the forward is beginning to recognize the strength of her team as a whole.

“I think the other forwards and I are really close and I know I can always rely on them to read where I’m gonna be and I can read where they’re gonna be,” she explained. “I can really depend on them to score.”

Benedict appreciates the closeness of her team not only in game situations, but in all aspects of life. But Benedict is more than a star on the soccer field, and she admits that NYU means more to her than just athletics.

“My grandfather and my

great-uncle both went here and so when I was younger my grandfather would always take me here to walk around,” Benedict said. “I’ve always loved the city but the soccer part also really helped.”

Although her schedule has been packed since she got to the city, she is trying her best to make time for adventure.

“I like to explore. I haven’t really had an opportunity to yet, but the other freshmen and I always make plans to go do something,” Benedict said. “It’s hard to hang out with anyone else because we’re just with each other so frequently and we’re either sleeping, eating or doing work.”

While she may be a busy student-athlete, Benedict does have interests outside of soccer and school. From running on her own to becoming a certified open-water scuba diver, she has a passion for excitement and says she can’t wait to continue to explore in the city.

“I want to just go to new places, like new restaurants. I’m

a big foodie so I wanna try a lot of cool places,” Benedict said.

Benedict is already thriving in her new home, and her obvious passion for the activities she loves is paving a path for her success. She hopes to lengthen

the soccer team’s winning streak with a victory against the University of Rochester this Friday.

Hockey Stays Unblemished

The Violets headed into their return home Friday night with the same perfect record to start the season as the Vancouver Canucks: 4-0.

And while the Canucks emerged from the weekend with a blemish to their perfect record, the Violets now sit a perfect 6-0.

Beginning Friday night winning against the University of Massachusetts at home, clad in sharp pink jerseys in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, the Violets got off to a hot start when UMass got called for too many men at 4:22, allowing junior defenseman Charles Arsenescu to capitalize and notch NYU’s first on the night.

After some back and forth action, sophomore forward Mason Gallegos sauced the Violets their second just after the frame’s midway point. The period was punctuated by senior forward David Shaby getting tossed to the penalty box, one which the Violets killed, continuing their success while shorthanded.

The second started with some heartbreakingly close calls for a third NYU goal, which luckily came to fruition eventually. Late in the frame NYU got a 5-on-3 chance, and though UMass got through the hard part, NYU capitalized on the single man advantage. The goal came from junior forward Michael Conslato at 13:28.

After traded penalties, Arsenescu scored NYU’s fourth — his second of the night — at the eleventh hour with just three seconds to go.

There was room for one more round of “Chelsea Dagger” — the

Violets’ goal song — before the game’s end as freshman forward Kohl Donovan netted one at 13:17 of the third to put NYU ahead 5-0.

The NYU penalty kill was strong on the night as it successfully defended freshman goaltender Patrick Cavanaugh to a shutout.

Saturday night, the boys headed to Newington, Connecticut to face off against Central Connecticut State University in hopes of extending their winning streak.

They did that and then some, continuing their trend of being successful both on the penalty kill and the man advantage. They got their first goal late in the game from Gallegos on a CCSU holding call. Then, freshman defenseman Matthew Banks got tossed to the box with a second to go, sending NYU back to the kill to start the second.

Of course, they killed it, and a couple more, before adding to their tally. Junior forward and captain Steven Esposito got another on the board at 14:33 and senior forward David Morgan would add a third before the second’s end.

Neither team seemed able to catch a break as the third was one filled with 4-on-4 play, but a rip

from senior defenseman Evan Ripley punctuated the night, which marked another shutout victory, this one attributed to junior goaltender Jack Nebe.

And so NYU ended its weekend with a total of nine unanswered goals and six unanswered wins. Not a bad start. Morgan would agree.

“Well, going 6-0 to start the season is always great, but we can’t let it get to our heads, and we need to continue to work hard and play our game,” Morgan said. “If we stick to playing our game, then I can see this team doing great things this season. The team has done really well welcoming the freshmen and really immersing them in our kind of gameplay.”

Multi-goal-scorer Gallegos emphasized the strength of the goaltending in the pair of wins.

“We picked up two big wins this weekend,” Gallegos said. “Had great goaltending with two big shutouts. Have a huge game on Saturday against Willie P.” The team is back in action Saturday night against William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey.
