Yiannopoulos Talk Canceled Due to Security Concerns

NYU canceled conservative journalist Milo Yiannopoulos’ scheduled talk at the university, citing safety concerns in the wake of violent incidents sparked by his controversial viewpoints. The NYU College Republicans planned to bring Yiannopoulos to NYU on Nov. 17.

Senior Vice President of Student Affairs Marc Wais issued a cancellation email to all prospective attendees on Saturday, Oct. 15, which stated that the university’s security review of the event raised concerns about the community’s safety and wellbeing.

“On other campuses his events have been accompanied by physical altercations, the need for drastically enlarged security presence, harassment of community members both at the event and beyond and credible threats involving the presence of firearms or explosives,” the email said.

The announcement also said that this event’s planned location in the Eisner & Lubin Auditorium posed another issue with its proximity to the Islamic Center, the LGBTQ Center and the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs. Although Yiannopoulos is a gay man, he has previously said that he believes rape culture is false, that all moderate Muslims he knows are no longer Islamic and that fat people are “disgusting.”

The planned visit to NYU was part of “The Dangerous Faggot Tour,” a nationwide tour of college campuses in which Yiannopoulos is speaking out against political correctness in society today. Before the date of the

now-canceled visit to NYU, Yiannopoulos is scheduled to speak at 14 other higher education institutions across the nation.

The College Republicans still hope to have Yiannopoulos on campus, and they plan to speak to the administration on Monday about the possibility. In a statement to WSN, the group said that they were completely left out of the decisionmaking process.

“We find this response from NYU to be unfair and deeply troubling,” the statement said.

“We have always been proud of the administration for its impartiality and support for all its students, and as such this move seems like one that legitimizes the narrative that any political beliefs that are not left of center are beyond the pale, which is extremely worrying.”

CAS senior and Vice President of the College Democrats Drew Weber said that he was disappointed by the College Republicans’ decision to cater to the alt-right.

“It is important we have room for perspectives from both sides of the aisle at NYU,” Weber said. “However, Mr. Yiannopoulos’ rhetoric extends well past the bounds of constructive dialogue into violence inciting hate speech. It is impossible to have an environment of free speech when students’ safety is threatened due to their religious, racial or gender identity.”

He said he believes that it was shameful to invite Yiannopoulos who associates so openly with the alt-right, and added that NYU’s rational gave appropriate weight to the safety of the student body.

However, the College Republicans said they are most upset about the way people are constru-

ing the past violence associated with Yiannopoulos.

“You have chosen to willfully ignore that the overwhelming majority of physical altercations and violence at Mr. Yiannopoulos’ past events have been directed at him and the audience, not carried out by them,” the statement from College Republicans said. “It is deeply offensive to use this pretext to justify using the power of the NYU establishment to allow one group of students to silence another at will.”

University spokesperson John Beckman said that the correspondence sent to the College Republicans spoke for itself.

“Given what’s happened at a number of campuses by way of altercations, threats and disruptions, the University has serious safety concerns that caused us to determine that we cannot allow the use of university facilities for this event,” Beckman said.

Our security review of the event that your organization has scheduled in NYU facilities featuring Milo Yiannopoulous has raised concerns for us about the safety and well-being of our community. On other campuses, his events have been accompanied by physical altercations, the need for a drastically enlarged security presence, harassment of community members both at the event and beyond, and credible threats involving the presence of firearms or explosives.

The physical set-up of NYU is such that our buildings are all multi-use and any space that would be used for this sort of event would invariably be near to a constant flow of students who could be drawn into the event involuntarily as well as other student organizations that are the subjects of Mr. Yiannopoulous’ attacks.

For example, the proposed venue in this case is proximate to the Islamic Center, the LGBTQ Student Center and the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs.

Across the country at other universities, these considerations and developments have led to cancellations or the early ending of Mr. Yiannopoulous’ appearances. Given all the foregoing – and particularly the perils to safety of our community and the orderly pursuit of University life -- we cannot allow the use of University facilities for this event.

Two Music Schools, a Million Paths

NYU boasts two of the top 12 leading music business programs in the country: Steinhardt’s music business major and Tisch’s Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music. Last week, both made Billboard’s “Twelve Elite Music Business Schools Shaping the Industry’s Future” list, but even though the two programs both focus on the music industry, students gain significantly different educations from the two schools.

Steinhardt freshman Jack Hanson said Steinhardt’s Bachelor of Music program helps students gain a broad perspective of the music business and lets them train in music theory, while Clive Davis prepares students to work any job in the music industry. Hanson believes that due to the differences between the two schools, there is a great amount of mutual respect between them.

“Honestly, I have not one bad

thing to say [about Clive Davis], because Clive Davis himself is one of the greatest luminaries in music,” Hanson said. “I know people who are in the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, and they’re so dedicated to their craft, and they’re so willing to learn more about music and recorded music and production.”

Hanson said he thought about applying to Clive Davis at one point but chose Steinhardt over Clive Davis because he wanted to pursue the music theory aspect of music business and wanted a bachelor of music degree.

Tisch junior Geena Kloepell is a student of the Clive Davis Institute, and she said that the school sets itself apart with an intensive focus on entrepreneurship and that the institute aims to help students become 100 percent employable after leaving it.

“We receive extensive training in performance, songwriting, production, engineering, management, journalism and

emergent media,” Kloepell said.

“It’s great to see that NYU is competitive in the field of music business with not just one, but two programs.”

Kloepell said that although there were attempts to mix the students in the two schools, Clive Davis does not have very much to do with Steinhardt because of the close-knit nature of Clive Davis and how time-consuming the program is.

“75 percent of the kids are actually musicians,” Hanson said. “People have gone on to work for labels like Universal, Sony — things like that — and people have also gone on to be functioning, working musicians in this industry.”

However, Tisch junior Asia Smulders transferred to NYU from a different university and said that she specifically chose the Clive Davis Institute over Steinhardt, because she wanted to learn more about the music technology side of recorded music.

But through these distinct differences, Hanson hopes the experiences Steinhardt and Tisch students gain will allow them to combine forces in the

music industry.

“I don’t really think a rivalry exists, because I have a friend who’s in Clive Davis, and I just think he’s genius,” Hanson said. “I look at it as us [Clive Davis and Steinhardt students] being collaborators in the business, hopefully one day.”

Steinhardt’s Plan to Foster Startups

As a low cost alternative to dorming, intergenerational housing will be available, pairing students with a senior citizen or retirement home in which to dorm.

With age comes wisdom, and the NYU housing process plans to bring some sagacity through its intergenerational housing pilot program in the 2017 fall semester. NYU announced affordability initiative in an Oct. 5 press release that detailed the new low-cost housing option as a part of the Affordability Steering Committee and Working Group’s October 2016 progress report.

Intergenerational housing allows students to dorm in a senior citizen home or retirement facility. The idea of a mutually beneficial relationship like this originated in Europe, and a university version gained traction internationally, from universities in the Netherlands to some in Chicago, Illinois.

According to the press release, NYU and its partner for this project, University House Settlement, hope to match juniors, seniors and graduate students with elderly residents who have empty, rentable bedrooms for students. It is projected that the average housing cost of $13,000 per year could be cut in half.

Ellen Lovitz, the Senior Advisor to the President for Policy Analysis, explained via email that the pilot will initially consist of about 10 students.

“During the first year we will assess how the program is working, and make any necessary adjustments, with the expectation that we will be able to scale up to larger numbers by the fall of 2018,” Lovitz said.

“Our planning process will include consultation with students and with residents of the housing complex identified by University Settlement.”

She said that this idea was partially influenced by the program in the Netherlands, but

the concept also arose in the spring “How Might We” sessions, during which the NYU community was invited to brainstorm with the Affordability Steering Committee about ways to lower costs.

Because the program is still in the planning stage, details about the application and matching process have yet to be determined. Yet some students, such as CAS freshman Jake Barber, already have mixed feelings about the new program.

“I think as a cost affordable option it’s great for students who need low income housing and need an alternative to staying in a traditional residence hall,” Barber said. “Although, I think it would be a bit of a nuisance because that student would not get the full [residence] hall experience at NYU.” While Lovitz said that service will probably not be required for students in intergenerational housing — unlike its Dutch counterparts, which require 30 hours of service or work per month — certain academic programs will let them help and socialize with their neighbors.

Other students, such as Gallatin junior Maddie Perlmutter, believe that there is still more to be done to aid students struggling with housing costs.

“Housing is and has been an issue for NYU students, and I believe that this could possibly remedy it for some people but, I don’t think that it will make a very large impact,” Perlmutter said. “The committee must continue seeking widespread alternatives to lower costs in the residence halls, the option most used by the NYU student population.”

After a summer spent renovating an old computer lab in the NYU Education building, the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development has opened a new space for students, faculty and startup companies to support their ventures around education and technology.

The school partnered with Alley, a co-working space company with offices around the city, to design and manage the space.

Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at Steinhardt Ted Magder said the space was created to provide faculty, students and private companies all interested in technology and education an opportunity to more easily collaborate and develop their work in these fields.

“We wanted Steinhardt to be very much at the center of all of the conversations and energy in New York City that is taking place around technology and education,” Magder said. “There is a very large sector of startups in the city and there are a lot of individuals in this city that are interested in technology and education, but there’s no place in New York City where faculty, students and private companies have been able to come together to focus on technology and education.”

Magder said that while Alley was not at the forefront of the initiative, its primary involvement in designing and managing the location has been crucial to creating the space.

“Alley’s role has been to advise on designing the space and advise on the day-to-day management of the space because Alley has run incubators in the city for a number of years,” Magder said. “We wanted to talk to someone who had done

this repeatedly.”

The space is open to all of NYU, as well as startup companies outside of the university working in conjunction with Steinhardt’s StartEd Incubator and Edtech Accelerator.

“The Accelerator is a four month project where we, together with our partner StartEd, having identified nine startup companies that are in the Edtech sector and are given space on the campus,” Magder said. “They are all working on nine different and exciting educational technology ventures and offer internship opportunities to students, and work with our faculty.”

All the members of Steinhardt’s StartEd Incubator and Edtech Accelerator will also become members of the Alley community, which gives them access to different events hosted

by Alley for startups throughout the city.

CAS sophomore Janice Lu said the space will hopefully provide her an opportunity to merge her interests in education and business.

“I have been participating in NYU America Reads and Counts where I work with third graders a couple of times each week, but I am also interested in business,” Lu said. “To have a space that encourages the crossover between education and entrepreneurship is exciting, and I look forward to seeing the kinds of products that this space helps develop through its work with startups.”

The startup companies working at this space will also offer internships to NYU students.

“Currently, the only way to get our students exposure to innovative companies in the education space is to try to work with companies off-campus,” Magder said.

“We had an opportunity to use the space that was unused and we wanted to work with new

companies without space and bring them closer to students.”

LS sophomore Alison Rao said that an internship with these types of companies would be rewarding and a great work experience.

“As someone who is looking for internships right now, this is a great opportunity for students interested in education, business and technology to start building their work experience,” Rao said. “I plan on transferring to Steinhardt next year to study MCC but this is a great way to get involved in a Steinhardt project even sooner.”

Steinhardt sophomore Matthew Weigl said that while he appreciates that NYU is creating more internship opportunities through this space, he thinks that it would have been more beneficial to create more practice rooms.

“Steinhardt is always building new space, be that a theater or now for entrepreneurship but there are always constant problems with practice space that seem to go unaddressed,” Weigl said. “I am happy that Steinhardt is looking for new ways to accommodate students and their professional interests and endeavors, but I would like to see the space used for practice rooms, or at least for new practice rooms to be created.”

The space will encourage conversations around education and technology and be another support for entrepreneurial ventures at the university.

“We want to increase the touchpoint between the students, the faculty and other innovators in society. We are a university without walls,” Magder said. “We want students and faculty to have meaningful engagements with everything going on in the city.”

‘Viral,’ a Collection of NYU Talent

The premise of “Viral Beauty” is one that, by now, is familiar to almost anyone who identifies (or is identified) as a millennial: Marsha Day, played by NYU alum Casey Killoran, is abruptly thrust into the limelight of social media fame after her dating ad goes viral. The film is a dark comedy, directed by David Tyson Lam, another former NYU student. With the help of a swarm of YouTubers and Perez Hilton, the plot unfolds into a fascinating look at what the consequences of fame in the digital age can be. Killoran and Tyson Lam recently sat down with WSN to give a blow-by-blow primer for the film.

On the comedic and serious aspects of the film Casey Killoran: We never really went into it with a “this is going to be a satire comedy” mindset. There

each got something from it. So we know that there are enough jokes and enough kind of poignant moments that it’s going to hit audiences in different places. I guess you just have to like comedy.

CK: The quirky, darker sense of humor is probably where it’s gonna land at the best.

CK: I think that when we started this project, we were telling a story that we are experiencing firsthand, so it’s definitely something that we relate to millennials and Generation X as well. We told the story because it was something that people we knew would really like, but it definitely is also more of a broad, global idea too.

David Tyson Lam: We’ve shown it to people who are in their 50s, we’ve shown it to people who are in their mid-30s, we’ve shown it to people who are in their 20s. I think the youngest that we showed it to were maybe like 16, 15. And they

DTL: There’s this scene where the main character has a mental breakdown on a live chat and in that scene, for the sake of realism and really wanting to see what Casey’s natural reaction would be, I asked her to eat real cat food. I think the kind of meta-reality that came out of that was, “Oh my god this is a real person eating real cat food and it is actually mesmerizing,” and so I would say that for me that was the funnest thing to shoot and also kind of controversial as well. I don’t

are plenty of times in the movie where the humor drops, and it gets extremely serious. It is very light and fun and entertaining to watch.

It’s fast paced, and it doesn’t feel like a 90-minute film; but it leaves the audience thinking about it once it’s over.

CK: I won’t say that that was my favorite (laughs).

On where the film succeeded and failed DTL: The film jumps between so many screens. It goes back and forth so many times between online and then reality, but when you watch it you’re not jarred by it. It actually feels cohesive. I think that’s directly a result of the fact that in this gen-

eration we go naturally every day from screen to screen. We’re on our phones and then our tablets and then we’re back in real life. We’re constantly through our lens. We are accustomed to moving dynamically through different realities, and so I think the film really captures that well. But if we had a second go at it, I would have loved to have had more time to just sit and plan.

Climbing to Success With ‘Ladder’

PUFFS Is Bringing Potter Back

The Elektra Theatre’s warm lobby, eclectic wallpapers, exposed brick and a ceiling full of bronze drop tiles met audience members in attendance at the performance of the Off-Broadway play, “PUFFS, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic.” The performance was one of fantastic energy and hilarity from opening curtain to standing ovation.

Before the narrator could utter his first lines, in front of those closed mustard-colored curtains stood an old overhead projector, the sort which required transparencies in elementary school, featuring the play’s title in an adorably doodled style. There were even announcements from the school faculty which acted to even further bring audience members into this wizarding world. Everything about the set was perfectly designed to immediately create the magic and fun of a world full of just that — magic and fun.

These were just some of the many ways in which the show added memorable, unique touches

to something with which everyone was already affectionately familiar.

This Harry Potter parody followed the entire chronology of the original series, but from the perspective of an exceptionally unimportant Hufflepuff student named Wayne.

This character resembled the Boy Who Lived only in the respect that similar events occurred to each.

Rather than becoming legendary, Wayne instead recedes further and further into aggressive normality.

Far from average, however, was Zac Moon’s performance as this character. Moon easily handled Wayne’s personal and emotional arc in the 90-minute span of the production without it feeling like an insincere rush. Alongside Moon were James Fouhey as Cedric Diggory and A.J. Ditty as the Narrator, who were both standouts with their own comedic timing. Their talent, however, in no way dimmed the lights of the other brilliant performers as there were few (if any) moments in which an actor on stage did not capture the attention and affection of the audience.

Throughout “PUFFS,” the performance area was effectively and smartly utilized to the advantage of the storytelling. Props, sound and

music, lighting and spell-casting were all tailored to make the most of the space. While naturally the dramatic grandeur of the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” battles could not be replicated on stage, the intense essence of it still came forth.

“PUFFS” situated itself as a comedy first, but allowed for the drama, emotional points and whimsy of the world it parodies to be present, and even utilized those heavier moments as jumping-off points for quips and its own commentary on the original work. However, for those who do not keep a constantly refreshed catalogue of Harry Potter facts and mythos at the ready, some of those jokes or comments will fall flat. But again, the density of the references doesn’t take away from the show. Rather, it creates moments for an audience member to catch their breath after all that laughing.

Jamie Duclos-Yourdon observed candidly at the beginning of his reading at McNally-Jackson on Wednesday, Oct. 12 that he probably knew the first names of all but perhaps three audience members.

Despite the lack of a need for introductions, he still addressed all 30-some crowd members and explained his journey from his home state of New York, to Colby College in Maine, to an MFA in creative writing from University of Arizona and finally to his current home in Oregon. This final destination on the West Coast is a critical component of his debut novel, titled “Froelich’s Ladder,” which was released on Aug. 9 by Forest Avenue Press. The story follows two brothers who arrived in Oregon among the first wave of settlers during the 1850s. Duclos-Yourdon describes the work as “fantabulist”–– instead of requiring intensive research, the setting of the story happened to lend itself to his needs.

Those needs included an impossibly tall ladder and man-eating clouds, among similarly outlandish ideas.

Duclos-Yourdon’s prose is not the star of his novel, but it lifts his comic dialogue and shuttles the narrative along smoothly. When asked about his influences, he mentioned the desire for something closer to a Shakespearean comedy than a tragedy, having his characters reunite joyfully by the end of the story.

Besides the great bard, though, Duclos-Yourdon’s influences included Brian Doyle, Kelly Link and John Cheever, though “influence” may be the wrong word. He described his relation to all three as more permissive –– meaning that after reading their work, things that previously did not

seem possible in fiction entered the realm of the possible.

The source of the novel’s conflict, a Native American woman who chooses to marry Froelich’s brother Harold over Froelich, is similarly Shakespearean, and the journey that Froelich embarks upon to escape this state of things in Oregon is greater than any trip ever undertaken in a Shakespearean play.

His trip to success may also ring true for many NYU students in creative writing programs: “Froelich’s Ladder” is in fact Duclos-Yourdon’s eighth completed novel, but only the first to sell. The absurdity of his journey from sitting in the back of a book reading to being in the front of the room was noted many times during the reading.

“You are all experts in something,” Duclos-Yourdon told the room. “Whether you can make money from that or not is another problem.”

Decolonization on the Lower East Side

Last Monday, Oct. 11, the Museum of Natural History was crowded in quite a different way than usual. Throughout the museum, visitors wearing stickers that read “Decolonize This Museum” marched and chanted, breaking only for slam poetry and speeches delivered via Occupy-style human microphone. The focal point of all of this activity was a large tarp draped over the statue of Teddy Roosevelt at the Central Park West entrance. The demonstrations were organized by NYC Stands With Standing Rock, a group that advocates for the Standing Rock Sioux’s rights to their sovereignty, along with a three-month installation (until December 17) at Artist’s Space called “Decolonize This Place.”

On Tuesday, representatives for NYC Stands With Standing Rock, along with members of the performance intervention group Liberate Tate and the activist group Global Ultra Luxury Faction, aggregated for a conversation on racism in anthropology called “Decolonize This Museum.”

NYC Stands With Standing Rock is a group that NYU students may be familiar with, as one of its protests took place in September in Washington Square Park. Its action focuses on the planned Dakota Access Pipeline, but also extends beyond this: on Monday, it incorporated prayer and religious rituals from Native American traditions in front of the anthropological exhibits.

Out of the three groups represented, NYC Stands With Standing Rock was the outlier, focusing on more traditional forms of protest. Liberate Tate and GULF have more corresponding goals and use similar methods to achieve said goals — using direct action as art and protest within individual museums. Liberate Tate began in 2010 with the goal of persuading the Tate Museum in London into refusing funds from British Petroleum. GULF is related to the Gulf Labor Co-

alition, a group which aims to stop worker exploitation by museums in Abu Dhabi, especially the Guggenheim.

Liberate Tate’s many performances include “Human Cost” in 2011, in which a naked man was covered in an oil-like substance in a gallery at the Tate, and “Birthmark” this year, in which volunteers were tattooed with the carbon dioxide atmospheric parts per million of the year they were born, all in museums that accept funds from oil companies. Similarly, GULF has done projections on the exterior of the Guggenheim in New York as well as occupational protests in multiple Guggenheim museums around the world.

While Liberate Tate ultimately succeeded in their goals — the Tate Museum this year ended its relationship with BP — GULF still has a ways to go. The Guggenheim construction in Abu Dhabi is still refusing to work with the unions recommended by the Gulf Labor Coalition.

One of GULF’s spokespeople conceded during the talk that “maybe the one-issue approach is problematic.”

The issues that these groups confront are significant, but the most revealing are the photographs of Liberate Tate’s “Human Cost” performance. In the background of the photograph, museumgoers can be seen milling about the gallery as they would on any other day. And, at the end of the day, the activists left the museum, and the tarp was removed from Teddy Roosevelt’s statue.

Since nearly every trace of the protest was removed as the activists left, it was unsurprising that the audience giggled when a GULF representative said that putting stickers on museum labels was just “a warning for what we’re willing to do.” The threat fell flatter than a pancake.

One question, too long to quote here, essentially asked if it was really all worth it. Right now, that seems unclear.

On the night of their biggest-ever sold-out show, indie rock group Whitney took pains to make their audience feel at home at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. The band’s singer and drummer, Julien Ehrlich, chatted with the crowd (as he would frequently throughout the night) while sipping his Tecate tall boy.

Malcolm Brown sat down on the keys and opened his bottle of Red. Guitarist Max Kakacek picked up his six-string, and they were ready to go.

During their 50-minute set on Oct. 10, Whitney brought the entire venue back to the dog days of summer. They played every track off of their debut album “Light Upon the Lake,” one dedicated to a sunny season of love. Ehrlich and the band created a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the 550 people in the crowd. After one of autumn’s coldest, rainiest weekends, the mood was a welcome change.

They invited the audience in when they opened with an ode to a friend called “Dave’s Song.”

From the opening chords and “I know you can’t help me now /

sometimes people change,” the audience was feeding off of the band’s energy. A sense of friendship and camaraderie permeated the venue throughout the set, making for an absolutely refreshing moment of community.

The group continued with “No Matter Where We Go,” “Polly” and “Red Moon.” To follow that up, they played a cover of one of the world’s newest Nobel Laureate’s songs. Ehrlich wasn’t perfect, but his beautiful cover of “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You” would still have made Bob Dylan proud.

After “Follow,” they left the stage. Everyone knew Whitney had to come back though — after all, Ehrlich had told them that they would. As he said, he doesn’t believe in lying to the crowd, so as has become the norm with modern set formats, the encore came as no surprise. They came back out and finished up by playing “Light Upon the Lake,” the NRBQ track “Magnet,” and finally, to close everything out they played their biggest hit, “No Woman.”

The band was well-rehearsed, the songs fun and upbeat, but what really made the concert into an experience was Ehrlich. In between each song he would ad-

dress the crowd, giving anecdotes like the fact that all his friends called each other “bubba.” The conversations worked; after they finished the next track, someone shouted, “What’s up, bubba?” It was as if it was that easy to all become friends. Ehrlich went on to chat about another album being in the works, how much he loved the Music Hall of Williamsburg and even about how his band manager has managed to keep everyone alive.

Art on Drugs

It’s no secret that for some artists, drugs are a part of the process. WSN picked the brains of a handful of artists at NYU this was the case: New York City is an abundant hub for the art scene, ripe with art exhibits that can be found on almost every street. NYU boasts more than 20 galleries on its campus alone, showcasing unique artwork from students, faculty and influential creators around the city. You don’t have to travel to the Upper East Side to visit the Met; here are some of the best galleries to check out right on campus.

80 WSE 80 Washington Square E.

This gallery combines contemporary and historical artwork in its exhibitions, displaying projects by noted artists and curators from around the city. This gallery has risen to prominence in recent years, having been featured in the Huffington Post, Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. Currently, the gallery is showcasing a solo exhibition from artist Ellen Cantor titled “Are you ready for love?” that features many drawings and clips from her short films.

Grey Art Gallery 100 Washington Square E.

The Grey Art Gallery operates as NYU’s own fine arts museum, with its mission statement describing the gallery as “functioning to collect, preserve, study, document, interpret and exhibit the evidence of human culture.” Current exhibitions include “A Feast of Astonishments,” which showcases the work of experimental artist Charlotte Moorman. The gallery often focuses on influential and radical artists, showing their most original paintings, photographs and songs.

“After dropping acid, I re-discovered my love for watercolors. It was my first time working with the medium in a while, as I often sketch in pen or pencil. However, picking up the brush again was easy. During the trip, I had a different understanding of the relationships between colors. Instead of having to think about what colors to use in a piece, I could easily blend the tones that felt like they belonged together. I felt as if I could see the colors I wanted on a larger scale, and I could feel the temperature of the tones that I worked with.”

The Barney Building 34 Stuyvesant St.

The Barney Building is home to the Department of Art and Art Professions and includes two galleries: the Commons and the Rosenberg Gallery. These galleries showcase contemporary art from B.F.A. students that are selected by a competitive committee. Walking into the gallery, you can find lots of abstract photographs, sketch drawings and still life pieces. Additional artworks from this gallery are also showcased in the Broadway Windows on Broadway and 10th Street.

Gallatin Galleries 1 Washington Pl.

Built in 2008, the Gallatin Gallery aims to engage with contemporary social issues through a broad spectrum of contemporary art, documents and events. Many short films are shown at the gallery, including “Moving Money,” which is about the transformation of money from the abstract to the concrete, and “This Is What Democracy Looks Like,” which looks into Wall Street. Keith Miller, the curator of the gallery, said, “The gallery continually pushes to seek out new ways of understanding contemporary issues through the lens of art by student and professional artists.”

Kimmel Galleries 60 Washington Square S., Floors 2, 4 and 8

The Kimmel Center houses three galleries: the Commuter Lounge Gallery, the Spiritual Life Gallery and the Stovall Series Gallery. Since it is the only gallery on campus not connected to a specific NYU school or department, the Kimmel Galleries are free to include artists across the city from all backgrounds. Daricia DeMarr, who oversees the gallery, said, “Our number one purpose is to be of service to NYU students, faculty and staff by exhibiting fine art across a variety of creative genres and media types.” The Kimmel Galleries are known for active engagement and experimentation with students.

“Hands down, dropping acid was one of the best things I’ve ever done for my art. I’m a very visual person, so that experience really helped me understand colors in a new way. I felt like, all of a sudden, I was free from thinking about what colors are supposed to go together, and I was able to look at color with a sense of clarity. Acid also helped me understand other people and my relationships to them. I tripped with people I really cared about, and my work since has been trying capture the beauty and energy that acid helped me see in them.”

Chelsea may be the go-to area for an afternoon gallery walk, but Manhattan is home to a host of art spaces that will be sure to pique your interest. Check out these must-see spots:

Paul Kasmin Gallery 293 10th Ave.

“When I’m faded, I think less about what I need to make and I just do what instinct or intuition would tell me to do naturally. Where I am determines what tone I’ll be shooting. Being from [the Mountain States] taught me how to shoot landscapes, and living in New York taught me how to shoot urban landscapes, so now the two just come together wherever I shoot.”

In the heart of the gallery district, you’ll find Paul Kasmin Gallery, which was once home to the work of David LaChapelle and Robert Indiana. These pop art legends set the tone for the gallery going forward, as there are often vibrant works on display.

Currently, you can take a peek at Doubletake, a collection of a stripey, drippy pieces that are sure to catch your eye. This iconic space is part of Chelsea’s booming gallery scene and is not to be missed.

David Zwirner 525 W 19th St. and 537 W 20th St.

This contemporary gallery often garners tons of social media attention, as it has been the home of funky and colorful installations. Dan Flavin’s neon light sculptures and Yayoi Kusama’s Obliteration Room are two bright exhibitions that encourage visitors to not only observe the space, but interact with it as well.

David Zwirner has one large warehouse space and one traditional gallery, allowing for a range of different installations.

Pace Gallery 537 W 24th St., 510 W 25th St., 32 E 57th St.

Founded in 1960, Pace Gallery represents over 80 artists and has three locations in Manhattan. A fun fact about their Chelsea location: in July 2013, Jay Z filmed the music video for “Picasso Baby” in front of a live audience of fans and artists. This summer, two of their venues revived James Turrell’s light projections from the ‘60s to highlight the relationship between space, light and perception. Keep an eye out for their exhibitions that explore both art and technology.

The Hole 312 Bowery

Located just a few blocks from campus, pop into The Hole to take a break from hitting the books. Part of Wallplay, a collection of creative spaces, this gallery works with emerging artists to execute thought-provoking and culturally relevant exhibitions.

Check out the Wallplay Shop right next door for additional, small scale collections.

Redbird Gallery 72 Gansevoort St.

Visible from the outdoor exhibition space on the upper floors of the Whitney Museum, Redbird Gallery is located in the heart of the Meatpacking District. Make a day of it: walk The Highline, explore The Whitney and head over to Redbird. The industrial vibe of the gallery seamlessly accommodates the edgy artists they showcase. Whether they’re showing Ron English’s famed, comic book-esque paintings or more graffiti-style work of upand-coming artists, Redbird is definitely a spot to take a look at.

Krause Gallery 149 Orchard St.

This pocket-sized exhibition space is located on the Lower East Side. Krause Gallery showcases the work of a range of artists that tap into technology and other mediums to create multi-faceted works. Visit the gallery’s two floors to see Chris Dean’s lenticular prints, through which he explores the novelty of specialized printmaking and the differing experiences of viewers.

“Gallery-hopping whilst dazed is an experience in itself. On my particular field trip to a cluster of galleries dotting the streets of Dumbo, my intuition of complete concentration was hazed yet the sensation of perceiving the vivid colors and textures of the works was intensified. In a warped, inexplicable way, shapes seemed to sharpen into high-definition and hover into space as 3-D objects. The colors and lines blended together into an immense puddle of hues and seemed to embrace me from every wall in all directions. An experience truly uncanny yet equally fascinating, I felt utterly immersed physically and psychologically in this visual, sensational experience.”

Sweat for Free in NYC

For anyone who is trying to get active on campus, the Palladium gym isn’t the only option for working out. Many students may not be aware of it, but there are a number of NYU clubs and health organizations that offer free exercise classes for students. Now you have no excuse to skip working out — here’s a list of the best free classes on campus.

NYU’s Slam Team Welcomes All Poets

Standing in front of a group of strangers and telling them your most personal thoughts and experiences can sound terrifying to some. To NYU’s slam poetry club, it’s just another Wednesday.

Slam! meets every week to talk about poetry, listen to other people’s stories and share and critique their own writing. When the students stand and share their life stories with a room full of strangers, everyone listens and snaps in agreement.

Co-President and Gallatin sophomore Lia Hagen leads the group in discussion and shares videos of poems she’s enjoyed each week. Last week, she even shared her own poetry, including one poem in which she described the struggle of being a vegetarian growing up in a meat-eating family.

“I really like that I can write something and feel really deeply connected to it and then share it with an audience, and feel them connect with it as well,” Hagen said. “In other forms of writing, there are barriers you have to pass through before you can actually perform, but in slam, you just go for it.”

Members of the club come from all backgrounds and styles of writing, but they enjoy sharing and learning from each other’s work. Club member and Gallatin sophomore Andie Newell loves the opportunity to make his experiences into art.

“People here are so vulnerable with each other,” Newell said. “It’s also a chance to be loud. At Slam! you can yell, you can shout, you can say what-

ever you want and people will welcome that. They welcome emotions on stage.”

GLS freshman Khalid Abudawas agreed with Newell about the experience of sharing emotions through poetry.

“My favorite thing about poetry is there is a lack of censorship, and you give somebody three to five minutes to say whatever they want, and you can be 100 percent truthful,” Abudawas said.

While the club is artistic and fun, members take their poetry very seriously. Gallatin senior Michael Frazier said his favorite part of the club was being around people who are also passionate about poetry.

Apart from the club, NYU also has a slam poetry team. The club is open to everyone, but only five people make the team, which goes on to compete at the College Union Poetry Slam International, the world’s largest college slam poetry competition. In the past, NYU has won first place at CUPSI in 2012, 2013 and 2015.

In order to determine the team members, auditioning students compete in three preliminary slams. The top poets of each round advance to the Grand Slam, where the top five are chosen for the team.

The first two preliminary slams have already happened, but the third one will take place from 8 to 10 p.m. on Nov. 5 in Kimmel 914. The Grand Slam will be from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 in Kimmel Rosenthal.

The club’s next event, “Queer the (Open) Mic,” will be from 7 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 28 in Kimmel 802.

MindfulNYU offers a wide variety of yoga and meditation classes every week in GCASL. Seriously, there are too many weekly classes to list here — it offers morning and evening sessions daily, and even has them on the weekend. There are beginner, intermediate, advanced and all-level classes in which you can work at your own comfort level toward tranquility and strength.

No matter what your schedule looks like, it’s possible to fit in some personal awareness, stress relief and physical exercise without leaving campus.

Tai Chi in Washington Square Park Every Tuesday at 9 a.m., the New York City Parks Department provides free tai chi classes in Washington Square Park. You might be the

only person there under the age of 60, but it’s a free and convenient way to start your day with exercise.

Running Club Ever hosts Saturday brunch and Monday evening runs on the East River Track as well.

NYU Bikeshare

NYU Recreation Courses

While not technically a group fitness class, the bikeshare at NYU is a super valuable resource to check out. It is completely free to NYU community members and only requires that you watch a short safety video and complete a quiz upon registration. Then you can check out a bike, lock and helmet from one of 14 NYU buildings for an entire day. Biking is not only convenient, but fun and great for exercise. Take a solo ride down to Battery Park or get some friends together and ride to Central Park for a picnic!

An assortment of recreation courses are held in Palladium and 404 Lafayette every quarter. Fall quarter registration is happening right now until Oct. 26, and there are tons of activities — such as ballet, Broadway jazz dancing, cardio kickboxing and judo — and levels from which to choose. Even though these courses are not free (fees range from $20-$60 for group classes), they are convenient and worth checking out.

Cereal Killer Cafe, London This one particularly hits home with me because I studied abroad in London last year. I can personally tell you this is a must-try. Whether you’re a cereal lover, chocolate lover or just like the clever name, this is the place for you. With more than 100 cereals to choose from, you can add as many toppings as you want, from marshmallows and maltesers to candy corn to strawberries and fruit — the options are endless, and you can personally customize your perfect cereal (maybe by completely turning it into a dessert ... with milk, like I did).

Sushi Saito, Tokyo At around 5:00 each morning, the fish are hand-picked by the chef and his workers at the Tsukiji Fish Market, one of the largest fish markets in the world. This has the freshest sushi and fish you will ever taste.

Mutura Sausage, Various Restaurants in Mombasa, Kenya Mutura, commonly known as blood sausage, can be found almost anywhere in Africa, where it originated. It is made by stuffing finely chopped pieces of the animal’s organs into its intestines and seasoning the stuffing with its own salted blood. I’ve never seen someone more excited to make pancakes for dinner.

Philip Kain was nothing less than ebullient as he scooped chocolate chip batter onto a griddle from the vat in the sink. He verbally ushered a line of students into his apartment, shouting, “Come on in, come on in! Put your name on that sign-in sheet and I’ll get you some pancakes.”

Philip Kain and William Crow have been Faculty Fellows in Residence at Gramercy Green Residence Hall for the past nine years — but please, call them Phil and Will. Their chocolate chip pancakes, which they’ve been serving to residents monthly ever since they moved in, have gained a sort of cult status among students.

“There’s something magical about breakfast for dinner,” Will said, looking up from the griddle.

The spatula never left his hand.

He flipped the pancakes with the swift, repetitive motions of a factory worker, but was having way more fun.

There are no plates, forks or mugs at Pancakes; in an effort to be environmentally friendly, attendees must bring their own. Phil informed me that my plate was Pfaltzgraff brand. “They’re heavy, aren’t they?” he said. “I bet that’s why your parents had you take them to college.”

Typically, 100–250 students come

to Pancakes, and Phil and Will go through 12 boxes of Aunt Jemima pancake batter and 15 bags of chocolate chips. The consensus among students is that there has to be some secret ingredient, because these pancakes are weirdly good — we’re talking up there with the best pancakes you’ve ever had.

The couple likes to perpetuate the rumors that students have met their future spouses at Pancakes, that students have come up with a billion-dollar startup idea at Pancakes and that attendance at Pancakes can raise your GPA. Nobody can confirm these for sure, but the event has an indescribable allure.

Two hundred students showed up to the first Pancakes event nine years ago, back when Phil and Will only had a small frying pan. Somehow, they’ve always managed to keep up with the demand — even

when more than 500 students showed up when there was a blizzard on the first day of classes two years ago.

“It was wonderful,” Phil said.

“The entire building was there.”

Pancakes saw an increase in attendance when Phil and Will moved the event from Sunday mornings, which was apparently Will’s idea, to weekday evenings.

“William is a nerd,” Phil said.

“Students aren’t home, let alone awake on Sundays. So we switched to doing it for dinner.”

On the Tuesday of midterms week, pancakes for dinner seemed to be just what every Gramercy resident needed. When asked what the secret ingredient was, Will didn’t skip a beat: “Love.”

Fall Weather Brings Fresh Eats

Fruits and vegetables have a funny way of being better indicators of the season than a weather forecast. The warm weather has disappeared, taking all of our fresh strawberries with it. To welcome the season of fuzzy sweaters and orange leaves, here’s a guide to the produce of the season and how to enjoy them in your dorm.

Apples Although some of us only distinguish different types of apples by red and green, there are actually 15,000 different varieties that exist around the world, and they’re at their best between mid-September and the end of October. The struggle to keep an apple from browning is real, but if you make sure to store them in a well-ventilated room and refrigerate after peeling, you won’t have a problem.

Peel your fresh apples, slice them into rings and give them a dusting of cinnamon to make a great snack. If you have a little more time, you can bake them after tossing with some sugar, cinnamon and butter. The end result is beautifully golden and tender

apple slices — a great snack to eat while doing homework or a healthy alternative to those hot Cheetos while watching Netflix.

Potatoes Potatoes are one of the only vegetables that can be mashed, fried, boiled, broiled, baked or roasted and taste good in every form. It’s given us so many of our favorite foods — fries, chips, creamy mash, wedges; the list of ways to make potatoes is as endless as the craving for them. Our minds reel and mouths water to think of how much better they taste when in season.

While the chances that you own a peeler as a college student are extremely low, you can just cut the potato as is, drizzle it with olive oil and season with oregano, salt and pepper and let them roast in the oven for an easy side dish.

And if you want to make them even better throw some cheddar or American cheese on them and you’ve got yourself some good ol’ home fries.

Cucumbers You might not realize it, but these babies are at their prime right now! Cucumbers are probably the most college-friendly

vegetable because you don’t need to do a thing before eating them.

If you want to get creative with your cucumber, try seasoning it with some cayenne powder or pepper. They are great in salads too, adding a crunchy texture to your kale Caesar salad. Even your water will taste more refreshing by adding some sliced cucumbers.

And it never hurts to place a slice on your eyes for those days when you just need to chill.

Don’t Demonize the Average American Voter

By PATRICK SEAMAN Staff Writer Towards the end of this Sunday’s second presidential debate, an undecided voter in a red sweater captured the attention of the Internet with his straightforward question regarding energy policies, one of the rare clear-headed moments in the debate. His name is Kenneth Bone, and in the past week he has been plastered all over mainstream media, including the Washington Post, CNN and The New York Times.

Bone’s moment in the debate has launched him into the position of a living, breathing meme. As reporters flocked to him, Bone’s actual opinions on

the election came to light. The voter, in a conversation with the Washington Post, said that he had entered the second debate leaning towards voting for Donald Trump. He explained that Trump’s economic proposals better represented his interests, and would likely do more to protect jobs of workers like him than Hillary Clinton’s.

Bone represents a majority of Trump’s voter base, a constituency that is more focused on their economic security and dayto-day jobs, which they feel will be more protected under Trump than they would be under Clinton. Does valuing stability in their lives make them, as Clinton and many of her supporters

claim, deplorable? Clinton’s supporters wrongly think that every person voting for the GOP nominee is sexist or xenophobic. Even if this is not the case, however, critics of Trump hold hatred for the voters who look past the horrible things the man has said and vote for him purely based on economic policy. But nobody should demonize Trump supporters for placing higher value on policies

that affect their day-to-day lives than in policies that will never affect them.

Earlier this week, the Huffington Post published an opinion claiming that voters who continue to back Trump deserve the deplorable label, one that Hillary Clinton walked back on after her initial statement. It’s easy, especially in exceptionally liberal college environments, to be caught up in an insular bubble. But not every potential voter is thinking about the same implications of this election. The political traits and issues valued by students on campuses like NYU are not necessarily as important to the average American voter.

Ken Bone said that Donald

Trump would do the most to protect his job in the fossil fuel industry. Judging by his debate question, he understands the harmful impact of his work, but his responsibility to support a family understandably comes first. It is, after all, a bit late to switch careers now. Ken Bone may be the most average American in America, and while he may not represent a liberal and urban constituency like New York, polls suggest that a great deal of voters empathize with him. To vote for your own interests shouldn’t automatically make you an awful person, even if that puts you with Trump.

‘Thoughts and Prayers’ Aren’t Helping Anyone

By MELANIE PINEDA Staff Writer On Oct. 4, Haiti was struck by the Category 5 Hurricane Matthew, now known as one of the most destructive tropical storms in history. This natural disaster has so far racked up a death toll of about 1,000 deaths in Haiti, and left over 1.4 million people in need of assistance. On top of the damage from Hurricane Matthew, Haiti has yet to recover from the 2010 earthquake, which is estimated to have cost a whopping $14 billion in damages. Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world, is now facing yet another horrific, expensive tragedy, and almost no one is talking about it.

The media and international powers should be held accountable for this mistreatment of a country that has already suffered enough.

When Haiti was struck by an earthquake and attracted the attention of the media almost seven years ago, the U.S. government rushed to offer aid to communities in desperate need.

Music celebrities helped boost funds for relief in order to show solidarity with the country, releasing an album titled “Hope for Haiti Now” that broke records on iTunes. However, in 2016, the response has not been parallel to the media’s response to Haiti’s current run in with a natural disaster; media coverage is not nearly as heavy as that of recent

tragedies with lesser casualties, even though these victims were able to reach assistance far more easily than people in the developing world. Families of the coastal towns in Haiti didn’t get the same luxuries as privileged Americans did when they faced disaster. The Haitian government is known for being poorly organized, and for most rural communities, there are very few ways in which they

can be reached in time during national emergencies.

The typical social media response would be to conjure up some sort of empty hashtag — for instance, #PrayForFlorida trended worldwide merely hours after Hurricane Matthew threatened to hit our beloved orange-growing state. Yet all the same, Florida’s dilemma has not been nearly as life-threatening as that of Haiti’s. Even Floridians themselves are angered that the media seems to be ignoring those in far more need. Perhaps the lack of exposure is because the U.S. media feels as though Haiti, a nation repeatedly devastated by tragedy, doesn’t deserve even a second of their time because

Haiti’s interests are not directly related to United States’.

We can’t keep hiding behind these trends and pretend that a simple tweet turns us into self-righteous heroes. Sure, social media helps us connect to a worldwide audience far quicker and easier than any other platform can, but thoughts and prayers don’t mean much if they reach those in actual need too late. Haiti needs our utmost attention at the moment, and if we can’t even give bother with a simple hashtag for it, then we are not even doing the bare minimum of what we should to help.

NYU’s Alcohol Policy Needs a Change

By JACK CAMPBELL Contributing Writer When a student decides which university they would like to attend, significant factors come into play that cannot be described by pamphlets. Evaluating a campus’ drinking culture obviously is important when incoming students assess social factors at a school.

Now there certainly are social indicators, such as whether or not fraternity culture is a staple of campus life, or the frequency of alcohol incidents around NYU, or what happens when an RA finds in-residence drinking, that are unknown unless discussed with a current student.

NYU is committed to creating a

campus that is free of alcohol and substance abuse, but the way the university has chosen to enforce this policy is more confusing than it should be. The choppy enforcement of drinking rules leaves students confused as to where to draw the line, and makes them more likely to venture off campus to drink in unsafe circumstances rather than deal with administrative uncertainty.

Many students have seen a variety of drinking cultures at NYU, and while many end up in very different places over the course of a night, or over the course of a semester, most begin with casual drinking in a dorm. This is where the main issue with alcohol abuse prevention lies. When drinking

in a dorm, students are in a calm area surrounded by people they trust, so it’s less likely they’ll become dangerously intoxicated.

From this we can surmise that it is at least somewhat safer to drink in a dorm than in a bar.

Yet, when RAs come into students’ rooms to write people up and take away alcohol, they are indirectly encouraging students to go out and drink in places

where they are less likely to be caught, but more likely to put themselves in a dangerous situation. This partially stems from the fact that the specific disciplinary actions that are taken towards those who are caught drinking are maddeningly inconsistent. NYU acts in accordance with the New York State laws; those being that it is illegal for people below 21 to drink, but there really are no significant repercussions for drinking.

Students will have their alcohol thrown away and, more often than not, get written up. That means going to a meeting with a residence hall director and writing an essay on why drinking is bad. Yet, the specific progression

of the punishments that are supposed to follow is hazy at best. I know of someone who has been written up seven times and hasn’t even been put on probation, while I know someone else who had their housing privileges revoked after only two violations.

While NYU obviously cannot condone dorm drinking, the university administrators have to know that students are going to drink regardless of the rules.

Students should not be made to feel like the only place they can drink without getting into some form of unknown administrative trouble is in a shady nightclub.

Surge in Anti-Semitism, Thanks to Trump

By ANNIE COHEN Staff Writer

With less than a month to go before the presidential election, Donald Trump has resorted to flinging about conspiracy theories to account for his increasingly likely loss. His latest tirades against the so-called rigged system have struck an especially venomous tone, as he warns his jeering crowds of a “global power structure” ruled by “international banks” and other “financial powers” who work hand-in-hand with Hillary Clinton to control the government. Put aside the obvious lunacy and impossibility of these claims and all that is left standing is a man essentially saying that a small, elite class of people run the world and ought to be taken down.

Jews hearing this language recognize it as the words used by anti-Semites for centuries to accuse them of greedily monopolizing the world to their advantage. To his crowds, hell-bent on securing a Trump victory, the message is clear: Jews could steal the election.

These coded warnings are not the Trump campaign’s first brush with anti-Semitism. The examples are myriad — the photo of a Star of Da-

vid superimposed on a picture of Clinton with stacks of money, Donald Trump Jr.’s inappropriate mention of gas chambers, the reluctance to denounce anti-Semitic white supremacists like David Duke, and of course, the campaign’s tacit approval of the alt-right’s hateful online presence.

The latter cannot be trivialized as a mere fringe group of ignorant, unenlightened cyber-bullies thanks to the Donald Trump campaign, which has so normalized these abhorrent individuals that they are beginning to infect the mainstream with their hate.

For Jewish millennials like myself and other young people, this is our first real interaction with overt anti-Semitism. We are experiencing it in ways we never expected, from memes being co-opted by the alt-right to use as hate symbols to swastika signs being waved at political rallies.

Anti-Semitism on college campuses has also seen an alarming spike, with the Anti-Defamation League reporting that the number of anti-Semitic incidents at colleges in 2015 is nearly double what it was in 2014.

But NYU students are familiar with blatant prejudice as well, such as the anti-Semitic protesters who frequent Washington Square Park. When our generation looks to political leaders and their rhetoric, there can be no tolerance for anti-Semitism whatsoever.

The stakes are too high, the tensions too sensitive.

I eagerly anticipate election day, and I have faith that the decent, democratic side of America will prevail over the dark, deplorable side. Even so, it remains a national disgrace that Donald Trump was ever given the platform he has to spew hate and conspiracy theories. His coalition poses a threat to our most storied institutions; that of a free press, of a democratic system, of a nation that eschews bigotry, not one that embraces it. In the end, history will prove Donald Trump and his supporters wrong.

Campus Anti-War Presence Is Lacking

By ISAAC OSEAS With only weeks remaining before Election Day, both major candidates have resorted to tabloid-style campaigns that focus on Trump’s wellknown crude misogyny and former president Bill Clinton’s sex scandals as main points. These cheap political tactics have served to divert attention from the elephant in the room: the escalation of the United States’ drive for war amid a deepening social crisis at home.

While Trump’s campaign has taken a more openly fascistic turn, Clinton has managed to attack him from the right, claiming Trump is the preferred candidate of Moscow and cannot be trusted to defend the interests of the U.S. corporate establishment.

The Clinton campaign has alleged, without evidence, that the Democratic National Committee hack of several months ago was carried out

by Russia in order to install Trump as the next president. During an August speech to the American Legion — a military veterans association — Clinton declared that as president she will “treat cyberattacks just like

any other attack,” and “will be ready with serious political, economic and military responses.”

These statements are in line with recommendations from leading geostrategic policy think tanks on the need to prepare for a military confrontation with Russia or China. The Atlantic Council, for instance, bemoans that, after 15 years of the war on terror, U.S. Army personnel “have not been psychologically hardened by personal experience for the grim task of fighting through heavy losses.” Its report calls for the Army to be able “to grow by several orders of magnitude” to address a range of issues such as a nuclear conflict or domestic dispute.

Growing U.S.-Russian tensions over Syria, along with continuing protests against police killings in the U.S., highlight the significance of the Atlantic Council’s report. Discussion of these policies, however, has been carefully avoided during the presidential campaign. Masses of students and young people are concerned about the danger of war, even if the full scope of preparations is being hidden. Last month, as part of the application to establish a chapter of

the International Youth and Students for Social Equality at NYU, I was able to secure 200 signatures in one afternoon in support of the founding of an anti-war club on campus. Many of the students who signed expressed their disgust with the past 15 years of uninterrupted war, and were angered by preparations for even bigger conflicts.

These anti-war views, however, find absolutely no expression within the main election choices, since both of the candidates have actively campaigned for U.S. interventionism.

The IYSSE endorses the candidates of the Socialist Equality Party, Jerry White and Niles Niemuth, as the only principled opposition to the growing danger of world war. I urge students to make plans to attend our anti-war conference, “Socialism vs. Capitalism and War,” in Detroit on Nov. 5, and to join me in building our chapter of the IYSSE at NYU.

There Are No Facts Left to Check in 2016

Alphabet Inc.’s news aggregator, Google News, has been helping individuals sift through the day’s most relevant stories with ease since its launch in 2002. Recently, Google News unveiled a new feature: fact checks. While this isn’t entirely surprising given the nature of the current presidential election season, it is indeed noteworthy. The fact check tag will join other labels like “Opinion,” “In-Depth” and “Highly Cited,” which can be found below the featured story, and it will merely link to unbiased fact checks by legitimate news sources.

In some ways, Google News’ decision to introduce its fact check feature is reminiscent of Facebook’s overhaul of its News section. Once these news aggregators move into the realm of actual journalism, there are ethical perils that naturally follow.

Facebook eventually got rid of its human editors in favor of an unbiased and uncritical algorithm to determine what is displayed. Google News, however, should not implement a Facebook-like algorithm — fact checking, by default, requires some human input to determine what kind of sources are considered credible. Google News’ fact checking is a smart way of sourcing facts for uninformed voters, and an algorithm diminishes the ability to ensure the facts are sourced intelligently. Even though everyone to some degree is partisan — there is no way to remove implicit bias from people — there are news sources, like The New York Times, that pride themselves on doing ethical, credible journalism, as opposed to the multitude of partisan blogs out there.

Candidates who skirt the truth are staples of American politics, but the presidential race this year has moved beyond the usual exaggerations to flagrant lies. This is the first time that any major U.S. news publication has used the word “lie” to call out a political candidate. Politifact has rated a whopping 71% of Donald Trump’s statements as “Mostly False,” “False” or “Pants on Fire,” prompting Hillary Clinton to repeatedly urge viewers to fact check his remarks during debates. Candidates cannot waste their precious speaking time pointing out the flaws in their opponent’s message, leaving the responsibility of fact checking to the moderators.

But when a candidate dismisses these moderators as being part of a rigged system — as Trump did to Martha Raddatz and Anderson Cooper in the last debate — they cannot be held accountable. By implementing fact checkers on the news sites voters visit, Google News and other aggregators can credibly reach out to their audience. Google News’ fact checking feature is ultimately a step in the right direction as it allows voters to be active participants in the election, instead of passively absorbing candidates’ claims. But it is somewhat unfortunate that this measure was even necessary. People who are running to be the next leader of the free world should not necessitate constant fact checking — ideally, there would be some truth to the messages they espouse. We can only hope that this election cycle has not normalized a political culture that values smarmy showmanship over actual facts.

Meet NYU’s Student Trainer

In order to keep in touch with her Olympic weightlifting past, junior Serena Huang works nine to 16 hours a week as a coaches’ assistant in the Varsity Performance Center (VPC), training and motivating the athletes to push themselves.

“I think this is Serena’s third year helping,” Coordinater of Athletic Training Nikki Webb said of the junior student assistant. “The help that she provides to our strength coaches has become a necessary asset for the athletes. She just knows what she is doing.”

“She’s very positive and motivating,” sophomore Nazzerine Waldon said of Huang. As an injured player on the women’s volleyball team, Waldon says she spends a lot of her time in the training room working on her recovery, “And I can always count on [Huang] to be there to guide me through the movements.”

Although Serena only works between nine and 16 hours a week in the VPC, her impact on the athletes goes beyond the confines of the training room walls.

“It’s about the mentality,” Huang said of her role as the coaches’ assistant. “The head coaches lead them through the lifts, but they don’t necessarily push them to do the extra things. You never know where your limits are, right?”

As a student at NYU’s School of Professional Studies, Huang said her course load has increased exponentially. “I have had to take on a lesser role in the training room this semester, at least in comparison to last semester.”

During the spring semester of 2016, Huang worked every day,

occasionally coming in during times that she wasn’t needed so that the athletes could get in a workout.

Former captain of the NYU wrestling team Matt Eulau called Huang a necessary part of his athletic experience. “She made working out fun by making the [VPC] a community,” he said. “It became less of a ‘I’m in practice and it’s all business’ and more of a ‘I can have fun and still get better.’”

After turning down the opportunity to be a discus thrower for the NYU track and field team, Huang never imagined having any kind of role in the athletics department. But while applying for jobs around campus, Nikki Webb saw Huang’s experience in Olympic weightlifting on her resume and hired her immediately.

“She is so competent in her lifting technique. She’s become an effective teacher with a lot of the movements,” Webb said.

Huang said her experience in Olympic weightlifting came from her desire to be a better athlete in high school. “My school’s gym didn’t have the tools necessary for me to become a better athlete,” she said, and so Huang went elsewhere.

Having been through the learning process herself, she says she is able to hone in on the emotional barriers athletes face when struggling through a new skill, and for that reason her motto is, “Well, it never hurts to try.”

“So many people are unsure if they have the ability to go a little harder in their workout,” Huang said. “I guess I just want to be the hype man for whoever lets me.”

After an opening weekend brought in seemingly by the hockey gods themselves, the NYU hockey team kept their dominance alive, extending their win streak to four, going unbeaten on the season thanks to a pair of road wins this weekend, the first coming Friday against the U.S. Naval Academy, 4-3, and the second, Saturday against the University of Maryland - Baltimore County, 7-2.

Friday’s game against the Navy sailed to a quick start as NYU got the man advantage on a Navy hooking call under a minute in, which prompted junior forward Michael Conslato to net a power play goal. After some traded penalties, the Navy knotted things at 12:23.

Some more scrummy play and penalty action ensued, punctuated by a late first period goal from sophomore defenseman Connor Finocchio. The Navy couldn’t keep it cool and got themselves tossed to the box again before the period’s end, allowing sophomore forward Mason Gallegos to net NYU’s third with just 17 seconds remaining in the frame and coming just 16 seconds after Finocchio’s tally.

The Navy was quick to net one in the second, coming within one at 2:46. A flurry of uncapitalized action took place in the third, coming to a head with a desperate 5-on-3 de-

fense in the second half of the second. Though the two-man advantage was successfully defended, the Navy completed their comeback with under a minute left, meaning a 3-3 tie heading into the final frame.

Following last season’s trend, the Violets had to head to the kill again early in the third, but were given a power play opportunity at the period’s midway point. Though the Navy killed it, NYU got the go-ahead goal shortly after the return to even strength. The rest of the game played out with painful angst as the Navy pulled their goalie but, ultimately, time ran out and NYU got the win to end up 3-0 on the season. Head coach and wordsmith Chris Cosentino offered that it wasn’t the prettiest, but it was a win.

“Friday night we didn’t play our best hockey and Navy gave us a great fight,” Cosentino said. “Adam Salisbury made some big saves in the third period and Mason Gallegos scored a big third period goal for us. Like I said, it wasn’t our best hockey, but we found a way to get the win.”

Saturday night against UMBC, the Violets came in with a one-two punch, with Gallegos opening the Violet scoring and junior forward Steven Esposito doubling the lead. Later on in the first, Canadian kid and senior defenseman Evan Ripley came in big with a power play goal to give NYU the 3-0 lead going into the second.

After a slough of UMBC

killed-penalties, NYU got an even-strength goal from Conslato to give them the 4-0 lead.

Sophomore forward Matthew Welch later got put away for hooking, giving UMBC a power play goal for their first of the night. NYU killed a couple more before the second period’s end and headed into the third with a dominant 31-16 lead in shots.

Freshman defenseman Giancarlo Pochintesta got his career first at 5:41 of the third to give NYU the 5-1 advantage. A further string of penalties continued through the third, coming to a head with back-to-back power play goals from NYU, the first from Kowalewski and the second — and NYU’s seventh — from senior forward David Morgan. UMBC got a second before the buzzer went, but it was largely irrelevant as NYU got their fourth straight win in the 7-2 showing. Cosentino commented that Saturday’s tilt was more indicative of the team the Violets want to be.

“We need to build off Saturday’s effort and continue to improve as a team.”

The boys will be back home at the Chelsea Piers Sky Rink this Friday at 8:30 p.m. against the University of Massachusetts, before heading to Newington, Connecticut the following night to play Central Connecticut State University.

Soccer: Mixed Results in Midwest

The NYU soccer teams traveled to the Midwest this weekend for their first conference road trip of the season. The teams were in St. Louis on Friday night to take on the Washington University.

The NYU women were first to challenge the Bears, ranked 15th nationally in the latest poll. The game started quick with a few early chances, but neither team could capitalize, with the game ending in a scoreless tie. Action faded slowly as the game moved forward, and after a few big saves from senior goalkeeper Cassie Steinberg, the Violets held off a last minute surge and the game finished without a goal. It was a hard fought game for the Violets and although they were outshot 20-13 overall, the Violets created some chances thanks to their two freshman forwards Alex Benedict and Isabelle Turner who combined for six shots.

The NYU men were not as lucky in St. Louis and the 10th ranked nationally Washington University got off to a fast start in route to a

4-0 victory. NYU conceded a penalty in the very first minute of play leading to the first goal of the game.

Goalkeeper Lucas Doucette made a nice save on the penalty kick, but the rebound was tapped in by the Bears’ Ike Witte. WUSTL would not look back scoring three more goals and playing solid defense throughout the contest. NYU’s lone shot on goal came from senior forward Bryan Walsh.

Sunday did not get any easier for the Violets, as NYU made the short trip to Chicago to faceoff with the rival University of Chicago Maroons.

The women began the morning with a few early chances, but were unable to get the ball past the Chicago keeper. The Maroons found the back of the net early in the 25th minute when Madori Spiker volleyed a cross past Steinberg.

NYU continued to battle Chicago until a late goal off an 80th minute counter attack sealed the 2-0 win for the hosts. Numerous NYU players challenged the Chicago keeper with eight recording official shots.

The defeat moves the NYU women to 0-2-2 in league play with an over-

all record of 7-3-3.

Unfortunately for NYU the toughest test remained, as the nation’s top ranked men’s team stood in their way. NYU kept it close in the first half of play, only conceding on an own goal after a difficult bounce in the box. However, Chicago came out on fire in the second half, dominating play and scoring four goals in a fifteen minute stretch beginning with a Brenton-Neal Desai goal in the 55th minute. NYU struggled to possess the ball against Chicago’s dominant high pressure system, but when they did manage to get the ball, NYU captain Petter Aasa led the way with two shots on goal and created another chance with a well-timed through ball. The loss dropped the Violets to 1-3 in UAA play, and 5-6-2 overall.

Both teams will look to turn things around this week with the women hosting Stockton University at Gaelic Park on Thursday and the men traveling to Throggs Neck to take on SUNY Maritime on Thursday.

Weekend Recap: Swimming Sets Record

The world of NYU athletics is a busy one, and that was on full display again this weekend as the Violets competed around the island. The women’s golf season finished its first half, while cross country, swimming and diving, and volleyball forged ahead into mid-October.

Cross Country The NYU cross country team traveled to southern New Jersey’s most popular college on Saturday, competing in the Rowan University Inter-Regional Boarder Battle. In a day of mixed results, the men impressed with a fifth place finish in a crowded field of 43, while the women placed 30th.

Jorge Maldonado continued his strong senior campaign, finishing the 8K event in sixth place in a field of 383 runners with a time of 23:38.3, the Violets’ best time of the afternoon. Junior Max Mudd, who has also been a steady member of the team this season, finished about 50 seconds behind Maldonado, which was good enough for 38th.

In what’s becoming a trend

for the women’s squad, junior Lara Dorsky finished first for the Violets, crossing the finish line of the 6K event with a time of 23:04.4.

The next stage of the season begins on Oct. 29, when the Violets travel to Atlanta, Georgia to compete in the UAA Championship, hosted by Emory University.

Swimming and Diving The Violets kept their momentum in the pool, outclassing West Chester University on Saturday at the Palladium Athletic Facility for their second victories of the season. The men remained dominant with a stellar 190110 victory, while the women were nearly as convincing winning 181.5-118.5.

The women’s squad took eight of 14 events as young talent continued to make its presence felt. Freshman Carmen White finished first in the one-meter diving competition and second in the three-meter contest, with scores of 292.28 and 256.36, respectively.

Not to be outdone, the men took 10 out of 14 events, including a spectacular performance by junior Tim Kou. Kou set a new Palladium record in the 100-

yard breaststroke with a time of 56.27, while finishing first in three other events as well.

The Violets return to the Palladium pool in three weeks when they host the NYU Fall Invitational against the Stevens Institute of Technology and Ursinus College.

Women’s Golf The fall golf season came to an end this weekend, as junior Alyssa Poentis and the women’s golf team finished its first half with a fourth-place performance at the NYU Invitational at the Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomfield, New Jersey.

Poentis was steady, topping the leaderboard with a 12-over 156.

Though she only birdied twice in two days, Poentis finished the weekend with 22 pars and edged Amherst’s Jessica Jeong by one stroke. Sophomore Patty Treevichaphan finished two strokes behind Poentis.

With the first leg of the season over, the Violets will return to the course in March at the UAA Championship tournament in Palm Beach, Florida.

Women’s Volleyball In a crucial late-weekend slate, the women’s volleyball team

struggled. They dropped three out of four matches to conference opponents at the UAA Round Robin #2 competition.

The trip to Massachusetts was a difficult one, as Carnegie Mellon, the University of Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis swept the Violets in consecutive matches. However, the Violets finished the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Brandeis University (25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22) and are now 14-10 on the season.

Their first set victory against Brandeis broke a stretch of 12

consecutive sets lost. The Violets made sure to conclude the weekend on a positive note.

Freshman middle blocker Sabrina Krebs notched 11 kills apiece, while second-year setter Kathryn Goyette had 39 assists against Brandeis.

With a few days off between matches, the Violets will look to get back on track Wednesday when they host Stevens Institute of Technology in Brooklyn.
