COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE The walls of Radio City Music Hall glowed orange, and the graduates, dressed in purple, cheered as their peers walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. Dean G. Gabrielle Starr gave her first address as official dean of the College of Arts and Science. The ceremony was split into two sessions to accommodate the number of graduates. In her speech, Starr encouraged the graduates to pause in the next few days, reflect upon their time at NYU and take account of the experiences,
both good and bad. NYU President John Sexton pressed the graduates to use their given talent to help heal what he called a broken world with an absence of trust and commitments to generations unknown. Faculty speaker Perri Klass left the audience with an understanding of the importance of the written word, and valedictorian William Bekker reflected on the importance of diversity.

“NYU ENCOURAGES US TO SEEK OUT INDIVIDUALS THAT SEE THE WORLD IN WAYS THAT WE MAY NOT. AND THAT IS A GREAT THING. IF WE ARE NEVER EXPOSED TO A VARIETY OF ALTERNATIVE VIEWPOINTS, THEN WE’RE DOOMED TO THE ONES THAT WE ALREADY HAVE ... WE TRULY ARE PRIVILEGED TO HAVE GONE TO A SCHOOL THAT DOES NOT HAVE OR PUSH A UNIFIED PERSPECTIVE OF THE WORLD.” – WILLIAM BEKKER, VALEDICTORIAN OF THE CLASS OF 2013

COLLEGE OF NURSING Gathering before an auditorium brimming with family and friends, the members of the College of Nursing’s class of 2013 prepared to take the first step into their professional lives at the New York City Center. As this is the first class to graduate since Hurricane Sandy, the significance of the disaster was a recurring theme throughout the ceremony. Nicole Piasio and Ashley Quick, student speakers for both the baccalaureate and master’s programs, provided complementary perspectives on the professional career on which they and their classmates were about to embark. Piasio emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself, asking fellow graduates to never settle for anything. Meanwhile, Quick drew on her experience working with NYU Langone Medical Center doctors, nurses and New York City Police Department officers to emphasize the importance of teamwork in the nursing profession. The keynote speaker, retired Brig. Gen. Bill Bester, addressed graduates both as apprentices and as fellow professionals, reminding them to never forget the importance of family and friends as they climb the professional ladder. Finally, the ceremony drew to a solemn close with the traditional professional nursing pledge led by dean Eileen Sullivan-Marx as graduates and faculty members rose to affirm commitment to the tenets of the nursing profession. – HANQING CHEN

GALLATIN SCHOOL OF INDIVIDUALIZED STUDY An impromptu tap performance to Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie,” comparisons between Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and the lyrics of Tupac Shakur, a speech framed by a pivotal moment of the TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” — these were the highlights of the commencement ceremony for the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Gallatin’s class of 2013 gathered at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center to receive its send-off. Much of the ceremony centered around learning as a continuous ex-
perience that extends outside of the classroom and into an ever-transforming world. Dean Susanne Wofford called the members of the graduating class the “rock and roll star[s] from the Village.” Faculty speaker Gregory Erickson told students to remember that their time at college was not ever meant to magically transform them into new people but instead serve as a time to make memories that would redefine who they are.

GLOBAL LIBERAL STUDIES The second class since the inception of the Global Liberal Studies program held its ceremony as the sun set on the Grand Hall. The energy was undeniable as dean Fred Schwarzbach spoke of how quickly the young program had come to fruition. NYU President John Sexton spoke of how worldwide communities were being brought together, both in New York City and in NYU’s global locations. Sexton also jokingly lamented that because of their travels, so many of the graduates were unable to receive one of his trademark hugs until the very day of the ceremony. Valedictorian William Layden stressed how important it was to become comfortable with the uncomfortable and see risks as opportunities to excel. – JONATHAN KESHISHOGLOU

LEONARD N. STERN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS When the lights dimmed at Radio City Music Hall on May 23, the center of attention was the Stern candidates for graduation, not the stunning venue and its historic past. Distinguished speaker Paula Kerger, PBS president and chief executive, reflected on her own college experience, reminding stu-
dents to always follow their true inner voice and to strive for balance between career success and personal and relationship fulfillment. She told the candidates to lead a happy life and urged them to “be more.” Student speaker Abhinav Kanakadandila emphasized the many individual accomplishments

POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE OF NYU The NYU-Poly commencement ceremony on Thursday morning was the institute’s 158th graduation and the first to take place at the Barclays Center in the heart of the borough. Jerry Hultin, former president of the Polytechnic Institute of NYU, opened the ceremony with the words of Brooklyn native Jay-Z, warming up the crowd with, “Is Brooklyn in the house?” Instead of the black and white jerseys of the Nets, over 6,000 students in purple caps and gowns sat on the court, while their families and friends cheered from the stands. Keynote speaker S. James Gates Jr. asked attendees to remember those responsible for their place here and reminded them of their role as the next “greatest generation.” Current NYU-Poly President Katepalli Sreenivasan advised the graduating class to take pride in its past and develop a strong work ethic for the future. The class of 2013 valedictorian, Radu Iliescu, ended his address with a piece of advice playing off Hultin’s concept of i2e — invention, innovation and entrepreneurship.

SCHOOL OF CONTINUING AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES Students from the School of Continuing and Professional Studies heeded their professors and mentors one last time, but this time the wise words were delivered in the Grand Hyatt New York instead of an NYU classroom. The loudest applause came from students to their family and friends. They became the central themes in the ceremony, with each speaker reminding students that although they successfully navigated the past four academic years alone, this experience was shaped by the people who have stood by their side. The ceremony ended with a final note to embrace failure and to bring to life the same excitement and wonder felt in that moment as the students passed another threshold.

SILVER SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK As the 2013 Silver School of Social Work graduates walked into the golden auditorium at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center, camera flashes filled the room and proud families and friends waved from their seats. Dean Lynn Videka welcomed guests and graduates to the 53rd Silver convocation and recognized all the different types of students graduating. The ceremony presented the graduates in the bachelor, master’s and doctoral programs. Commencement speaker Edolphus Towns, a former U.S. congressman,
charmed the crowd with his lighthearted yet inspiring speech. “Don’t quit or sit in amazement,” he said, reminding the graduates that success does not come easily. Meanwhile, undergraduate student speaker Cordelia Brady spoke of a personal experience that made her realize every day she and her fellow graduates have the opportunity to learn from, support and acknowledge others.

STEINHARDT SCHOOL OF CULTURE, EDUCATION AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT MONDAY, MAY 20 10:30 A.M. RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL 1260 SIXTH AVE.
For a school with such a diverse array of backgrounds, the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development showcased a central theme at its commencement ceremony — its unanimous commitment to helping others. Dean Mary Brabeck reminisced about the hardships experienced by the graduating class of 2013, such as Hurricane Sandy and the blizzard of 2010, but stressed the importance of lending a helping hand. This sense of generosity was most prominent among the graduating students, as evidenced by their tremendous support for their peers regardless of their areas of study. The ceremony was lively, with two powerful performances by the Steinhardt Singers, as much as it was unpredictable, with one speaker whipping out a harmonica before his speech. The one certainty was the knowledge that Radio City Music Hall was filled with a group of great minds, promising leaders and, most importantly, a drive to help the world.

The award for most costume changes in a commencement ceremony goes to the Tisch Salute, held at Radio City Music Hall on May 24. Featuring a student dance performance and a medley of songs from the musical “Spring Awakening” sung by Tisch drama students, the salute to the class of 2013 delivered theatrics from the start. Forgoing the traditional student procession through the aisles, the graduFRIDAY, MAY 24 ates came from 11 A.M. the wings of the RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL stage while an 1260 SIXTH AVE. organist played. Honored speaker Glen Mazzara, former showrunner of “The Walking Dead,” delivered a speech full of humor and poignancy about his own failures, the love of creating art that stands the test of time and the importance of supporting other artists — the entire crowd was on its feet and applauding thunderously at the end. And, in true Tisch fashion, the ceremony ended with a dramatic flair: as the platform party recessed, the organ player re-emerged from the wall to close the proceedings.
