NYU creates leaders. After graduation, students’ achievements have spanned Pulitzer Prizes, Grammy awards and government positions across the world. The following six NYU leaders entered the government and created change in our nation.

1. Martha Roby Roby is currently serving her third term representing Alabama’s Second Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

During her time in office, Roby has led multiple Congressional delegations to Afghanistan to visit service members and survey their conditions. Roby successfully pushed back on the Air Force’s motion to remove the 908th airlift wing from Montgomery’s Maxwell air force base.

She also advocated for the Army Aviation Center of Excellence at Fort Rucker to fight potential budget cuts that would make its training program smaller and less efficient.

Speaker John Boehner then appointed her to the Benghazi

Select Committee in May 2014, where she helped investigate the military’s preparation and response after the Benghazi attacks.

2. James Tallmadge, Jr. James Tallmadge, Jr. served in New York’s Fourth Congressional District as a United States Representative from June 1817 to March 1819 and then helped found NYU in 1831. He is most well-known for his work in trying to restrict slavery in Missouri with the Tallmadge Amendment, however the Senate rejected the amendment.

He made speeches against slavery during his time as a public leader, with his oration even being translated into German.

3. Vanita Gupta Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta is the head of the Civil Rights Division in the U.S. Department of Justice, and Barack Obama appointed her to lead the division in 2014.

She graduated from NYU School of Law in 2001 and since then has advanced criminal justice reform, enforced constitutional policing and investigated — as well as worked to reform — police

departments in Ferguson, Montana, Cleveland, Ohio, Baltimore, Maryland, Chicago, Illinois and other large cities.

She also works to prosecute hate crimes, promote disability rights, defend against human trafficking, protect LGBT rights and combat discrimination in education, employment and voting. Gupta exposed the violations of the Baltimore City Police Department this past August, uncovering unconstitutional stops, searches and arrests. Her work also helped expose the excessive force that has disproportionately affected African American residents.

4. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Ghana’s Minister for Trade and Industry, is a diplomat as well as politician, and he previously served in Ghana as a minister of communication, a minister of education and a minister responsible for mines and energy.

He received a graduate certificate for international banking and finance from NYU in 1984, and since leaving the city, he has initiated, developed and implemented policies that support media outlets, encouraging more

Doubling Down on Trump

While the Republican Party has reclaimed the presidency and a majority in both houses of Congress, Republican students are still unable to fully unite behind the president-elect. Although the real estate mogul won the presidency — against the polls’ predictions — students remain divided.

Some Republican students have not reneged their support of Trump, but a large source of dissent comes from Trump's rhetoric — a sentiment shared university-wide. They voiced their concerns through social activism, such as rallying in Washington Square Park, marching to Trump Tower and showing solidarity with students experiencing discrimination.

Some Republicans, such as CAS senior Daniel Balagula, think that these actions are ineffective due to their inability to enact tangible change. In addition, Balagula said that he found the rallies contradictory after meeting some protesters who did not vote.

“I think it says a lot about the state of the Democratic party right now: lost in cause and purpose,” Balagula said. “There are many people who identify as Democrats, but who had no passion for Hillary until only after she lost. So I see them as more reactionary than having any deeper purpose. The protests could be used as a way to demonstrate discontent, but that's the most they'll ever do.”

SPS senior William Gockel-Figge, who identifies as Republican, said he believes the protests are a “dis-

tasteful mockery” of the electoral system and people should instead acknowledge that they were able to partake in a free and fair election.

“I am all for peaceful protest but I believe those who ruin buildings and public property should be charged with rioting — an offense chargeable up to five years,” Gockel-Figge said. “Shouting hateful racist comments as they protest love and beating up people as they talk about peace is just maniacal. My only feeling towards them is pity and sorrow for such a misguided people.”

However, Republicans such as Gockel-Figge look forward to the change of leadership ideologies in the nation.

Balagula thinks the Trump presidency will be a breath of fresh air. However, he does not support Trump’s stances on women’s health care, since he believes American citizens should have as many rights as possible with their bodies and personal lives.

“It's going to disrupt conventional politics, media and academia in ways that probably have never happened before,” Balagula said. “Even during the end of election day, you had the biggest news outlets in the world admitting fault within their own system, how they weren't listening and joining the conversation but rather controlling the conversation. I'm also looking forward to seeing Trump deliver on all his economic promises that he's made, which I truly think he can accomplish.”

CAS alum Matthew Sgouros said he can't think of a single thing he isn't looking forward to in

Trump's presidency.

“I am most looking forward to him using his business experience to improve our economy and bring jobs back to this nation,” Sgouros said. “I am also very optimistic for the creation of a wall along our southern border to better control our nation's severe illegal immigration issue. I am also cautiously optimistic that Trump's presidency may put an end to the this era of political correctness and victimizing that this nation has seen under Obama, which I believe is the first step to reuniting many of the divisions we have seen among different groups of Americans in recent times.”

5. Diana DeGette Diana DeGette earned her doctor of laws degree from NYU in 1982, and she is best known for her work with female reproductive rights and her prochoice stance on abortion laws in Colorado.

She started her government career as the U.S. House Representative for Colorado’s Sixth Congressional District from 1992 to 1996. In 1997, she transitioned to become the U.S. House Representative for Colorado’s First Congressional District — a position she still holds today.

DeGette also serves as the cochair of the pro-choice caucus and co-sponsors the Prevention First Act, which aims to lessen the prevalence of unintended pregnancies, abortions and sexually transmitted infections in America. She authored a bill called Bubble Bill, which provides com-

6. Chi Mui Chi Mui is the first Asian American mayor of San Gabriel, California. He graduated cum laude from NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Mui was elected to San Gabriel’s City Council in 2003, and he used his mayoral term to successfully integrate the city’s non-Asian residents with recent Chinese immigrants.

This progress reflected his prior work as the president of the Los Angeles Chinese American Citizens Alliance, a civil rights group that advocates for the protected rights of Chinese Americans.

In addition to helping race relations, Mui campaigned to secure $35 million from the state of California to build parks and other community facilities in the bordering cornfields of Chinatown.

He also founded and coaches the Los Angeles Chinatown Athletic Association Volleyball Club.

Larceny On Oct. 30 at 10:15 a.m., a taxi driver reported that two students on campus skipped out on paying cab fare. Police were notified.

On Nov. 2 at 9:15 a.m., a student reported that her identification cards and phone were stolen from a classroom at 23 W 4th St. A police report was made.

On Nov. 6 at 12:00 a.m., a non-NYU student reported that his bicycle, which had been on a bike rack in front of Shimkin Hall was missing. A police report was filed.

Criminal Mischief On Oct. 24 at 1:30 p.m., Public Safety responded to a report of crim-

inal mischief at Weinstein Residence Hall and found that someone had ripped papers off a bulletin board in a residence hallway.

On Nov. 9 at 8:10 a.m., a Public Safety Officer reported that he observed graffiti on a door at Rogers Hall. A police report was filed.

Harassment On Oct. 27 at 6:40 a.m., a staff member reported that an unidentified male on Washington Square North harassed her. A police report was filed.

Forcible Fondling On Oct. 31 at 2:25 a.m., three students outside Lipton Hall reported that they were touched inappropriately by an unknown male. The unknown male then entered Lipton Hall and grabbed another student by the arm. While the police were called, Public Safety officers subdued the unknown male.

Assault On Nov. 4 at 5:30 a.m., a Public Safety Officer reported that he had been assaulted by a non-NYU male while he was on duty at the Broome Street Residence Hall. A police report was filed.

On Nov. 9 at 1:30 a.m., a Public Safety Officer reported that at Warren Weaver Hall, he was assaulted by an unknown male outside the hall.

NYU Student Organizes Love Rally in the Park

The saga of rallies in and of NYU as a response to Donald Trump’s election continued on Friday with the Love Rally in Washington Square Park.

Gallatin sophomore Sydney Miller organized the event, garnering over 10,000 responses on Facebook.

“I just thought there has to be a way to show these people that just because we elected this man, doesn’t mean we don’t love them or that the country is going to reject them or abandon them,” Miller said. “Over time it became bigger than that — now it’s a way for everyone, regardless of their political affiliation, to accept all those people.”

Miller said she organized the event in response to the disheartened reactions of the people around her and that the Love Rally gained much more traction than she originally anticipated.

She thought it would only garner the attention of NYU students, but people throughout New York City wanted to attend, including Trump supporters.

Miller permitted their atten-

dance, and when she said that people of all ideologies were welcome, she received backlash on the rally’s Facebook page. Miller said that while she understands why people are against this decision, she believes it is important to spread the message that not every person who voted for Trump wants to invalidate the rights of those who feel marginalized by his rhetoric.

“The most important thing to me is to show these groups that Trump has targeted to show that the country didn’t vote against them, that they haven’t voted to take away their rights,” Miller said. “To have Trump supporters show up and say ‘I support your rights even though I voted this way’ is actually really important to me and I think it’s really important to the future of this country.”

The rally began next to the Washington Square Arch where, after a short introduction from Miller, protesters passed around a megaphone and recounted their experiences of discrimination for the crowd.

When protesters began to chant “not my president” and “hands too small, can’t build wall,” Miller tried refocusing the

rally to supporting diverse communities and using love to combat hate. However, the crowd continued chanting, and half the protesters began marching towards Sixth Avenue.

Tisch freshman Claudia Davis said that she decided to attend the rally, since she believed it was a good forum for people to unify. She agreed with Miller’s decision to allow Trump supporters at the rally.

“I don’t want to pigeon-hole Trump supporters as these hateful, scornful people,” Davis said.

“I think that a lot of them support social causes that Democrats do but they just chose to vote for him for other reasons and they also want to unify.”

She said that this has been a tough week, but that events like the Love Rally in the Park ignite feelings of hope that could help people get through the next four years unscathed.

Steinhardt junior Teddy Ryles said that Miller’s decision to allow Trump supporters at the rally was important, since people with different political views should not be stigmatized.

“I think it is closed-minded to assume that every Trump supporter is a racist, a homophobe

or a xenophobic individual,” Ryles said. “People start to assume the only thing Trump supporters want to do is to create discriminatory divides across the country, when in fact, many people who voted for him actually did so because they feel that our political and economic system has rejected them; a lot of the things we are exposed to are filtered and lack the neutrality that should be given to the public.”

Tisch alum Rebecca Faulkner and her two children and many other families also attended the rally. She said that after hearing the election results, she has attended rallies and protests all week, and this was the first time she brought her two daughters to attend as well: 11-year-old Isabel and seven-year-old Sophie.

“Really, I’m here for my kids, and I’m here for all the Americans that didn’t want this result and don’t feel that Trump represents us,” Faulkner said. “I became a U.S. citizen two weeks ago, so I could vote for many years after living here.

I feel like it’s really important that we’re all here and we’re all speaking out.”

Isabel hoped that attending rallies will create change in future elections.

“I think part of the reason we came here is because — well, most of the reason, actually — is because next election, I think more people that were not voting for anyone will vote for whoever will be the next Democrat,” she said. “Also, like my mom said, we came to express the anger and have other people that feel the same way that you can talk to.”

Though the crowd’s chanting of “bridges not walls,” “pussy grabs back” and “my body, my choice” deterred Miller’s original vision of the event, Miller said that she hopes people feel unity after the Love Rally.

“What I’m hoping will come of this event is, first of all, reassurance for the people who feel like they are being betrayed and for the people that feel unsafe — affirmation that this country is not rejecting them and this country does love them,” Miller said. “Just some form of coming together and understanding that we can, regardless of any differences, work together to prevent something negative from happening to this country.”

Younger readers, born in an an increasingly technological world, may not remember a time without television or cell phones. This past Thursday, the New York Times in association with Samsung officially launched The Daily 360, a new way of not just experiencing, but immersing oneself in the news.

In the Meatpacking District, techies and journalists alike attended a panel regarding The Daily 360. The event was moderated by New York Times Magazine Editor in Chief Jake Silverstein and featured Associate Editor Sam Dolnick, Executive

Their discussion, followed by a Q&A, touched upon new media, how it was created and the new types of news reporting that have come out of it.

But before these issues were discussed, it had to be explained what exactly a 360-degree camera is. Hopkins said it is a small, portable camera that takes 360-degree videos, allowing subscribers to see events in panoramic view. One of the first videos taken in this format was of the aftermath of a bombing in Yemen. By clicking and dragging on the screen, viewers were able to interactively explore the space to see the destruction left behind by the attack.

The Daily 360 is a project that will bring the world daily 360-degree videos using these cameras.

Dolnick said that the project started off as a dare to see if they were able to post one video a day for an entire year. However, it soon blossomed into a movement, creating a new realm of journalism.

This technology is its impressive ability to give viewers a sense of presence and of being in a place, although they are not physically there. As Tobin said, traditional journalism and newscasting are great for analysis and information, but The Daily 360 allows people to feel.

In a world that has become increasingly divided, this type of journalism is critical. Instead of watching news from a one-

Beyond the walls of the studios of 721 Broadway lives a world of professional theater that NYU Tisch juniors and seniors yearn to become a part of. However, one fearless junior was not going to wait around until graduation to get his invitation.

“It’s important to be really hungry about this and to really want this,” Emmanuel Lopez said while sitting outside of Broadway’s Marquis Theatre. After three callbacks and almost a year of waiting, Lopez was finally cast in the new jukebox Broadway musical “On Your Feet!”

“This is my first big outside production, because everything I had done before was educational,” Lopez explains.

Having only started his musical theatre studies this semester at NYU’s New Studio On Broadway, he attributes the majority of his training to growing up in Puerto Rico, where he began salsa dancing at a very young age.

“Studio gave me professionalism, but what I did in the audition room and what I do in the show is all salsa dancing, and that came from Puerto Rico,” Lopez said.

“On Your Feet!” was still in previews when Lopez and his mother sat in the last row together on Oct. 12, 2015. They shared the same thrill and excitement while watching their native salsa music and dance glorified on a Broadway stage.

Media has connected us, but it has also separated us. The public now has more access to information, but this information more often than not is packaged into social media and apps. With that comes a sense of detachment — a lack of a need to engage with any source physically or verbally.

The Daily 360 will not only focus on hard news, it will feature light and playful videos as well.

But for the more serious pieces, a first-person perspective aims to bring the world closer together.

Tisch junior Emmanuel Lopez was recently cast in the Broadway jukebox musical “On Your Feet!” about Emilio and Gloria Estefan.

This performance is what initially inspired Lopez to audition.

“After I saw the show, I looked in the playbill to see who was behind the show,” Lopez said, “because I thought to myself, ‘I feel like I can work for this.’”

While performing in “On Your Feet!” eight times a week and attending last minute rehearsals, Lopez is learning to juggle the responsibilities of a Broadway performer and a student while continuing his rigorous training with New Studio on Broadway. He even still lives in his dorm room.

“It’s a lot of work,” Lopez said. “I had to drop a class in order to keep all the important things, like my financial aid and my dorm. It’s definitely a matter of trying to prioritize what’s important in the moment.”

Although Lopez has the passion and ability to balance acting in a Broadway show and his college courses at NYU, he is appreciative and realizes that he could not do it without the support Tisch has given him throughout the process.

“I finished the Tisch pro-

duction of ‘In The Heights’ on a Saturday, and on that Tuesday I started rehearsal for ‘On Your Feet!’”

Lopez said. “During the rehearsal period of ‘On Your Feet!,’ my studio teachers at Tisch were really understanding of the situation because I had to miss a lot of studio. I’m really grateful for Tisch and New Studio on Broadway, specifically for making this work.”

Lopez has been given an extraordinary gift. Without even graduating college, he landed his first professional show and is an equity performer. He will be sharing his charm and talent for salsa dance every night on the Marquis Theatre stage.

“My first night in the show, the curtain raised and the lights came up, and I immediately locked eyes with my mother in the audience, to see her crying,” Lopez said. “It was so surreal for me, to think that just a year ago I was sitting with her in that audience and now I am the one dancing on the stage.”

Tucked away in the Barney Building’s first floor on Stuyvesant St., the bachelor of fine arts students in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development opened their exhibition “There Goes the Neighborhood” on the evening of Nov. 9. Curated

by BFA students Olivia Chou, Jackie Monoson, Ila Krishnamoorthy and Iana Alcock, the gallery features works from 24 students in the program.

The exhibit is at once arresting and sparse; the blank white walls dominate the space, but instead of making the show seem empty, it makes each work seem even more starkly contrasted with its surroundings. Each artist gets a distinct space for their pieces, and viewers can appreciate each one by itself without being overwhelmed by the other pieces. The mediums range from video to painting to sculpture and video incorporated into sculptures.

What stood out about the show as a whole was the sheer variety of texture displayed. One piece by freshman William Adams was a large black tapestry with the image on it made with individual threads off of the fabric to create a bichromatic visual. Christine Searsea’s ceramic sculpture is incredible in its mastery of the textures that clay can afford. The surface had cracked and colorful glaze that made the sea urchin-esque work seem like it had been plucked from a tide pool.

Even the two-dimensional works were full of texture; Jenny Danou He’s piece had Chinese characters scrawled over a winding, pink expanse of something that could have been a sketch of a small intestine or a swath of fabric. It is projected above the stage in the western edge of the gallery — a piece

that at once evokes the growing minimalist movement, the fascination with the grotesque and the complexity of the United States’ cultural relationship with China.

Throughout, “There Goes the Neighborhood” is a curious reflection — not necessarily on Greenwich Village or any New York neighborhood in particular, but the experiences we have in our neighborhoods. From peeling off white latex paint from one’s face (a la Clara Lu) to creating a triptych of a therapist’s pamphlet and accompanying images, the show is a scattered and absorbing trip through the experiences of NYU’s art students. From racism to sardonic critiques of Keith Haring, it’s fun and engaging the whole way through.

“There Goes the Neighborhood” is on display at the NYU Barney Building at 34 Stuyvesant St. through Nov. 20.

Another Election Gone Awry

“Get you hence instantly, and tell those friends, / They have chose a consul that will from them take / Their liberties; make them of no more voice / Than dogs that are as often beat for barking / As therefore kept to do so.”

Thus warns William Shakespeare’s Brutus, who shortly thereafter wounds his enemy Coriolanus not with a knife, but with the power of the people. In Omri Kadim’s new adaptation of the bard’s classic play, “Coriolanus: From Man to Dragon” — produced by Shakespeare in the Square with the aptly named Combative Theater Company — verbal and physical wounds vie for the audience’s attention.

In some of its best moments, the two kinds of injuries are one and the same. To see it on election night was electrifying and distracting; to see it after the election could be even more energizing. The battles are a vindicating expression of the tension that never quite broke into physical altercation during the campaign.

Caius Marcius (later to become Coriolanus, played by Jefferson Reardon) first arrives in the midst of the citizens — which includes the audience — herded together in the center of the performance space.

He makes his way through by punching, kicking and spitting in the faces of the protesting crowd. This extreme physical action persists throughout much of the play, with choreographed fight scenes punctuating every battle, war and even domestic dispute.

“Coriolanus” is a play wellsuited to this treatment, but at points the fights become more distracting than edifying.

For example, when Volumnia grabs a gentlewoman’s hair

and tortures her while considering whether or not to see Virgilia, this violence raises more questions than it answers. But this is quickly forgotten with Coriolanus’s deadly walk to the throne in the second half, punctuated with menacing percussion from Aiden Farrell and surrounded by a bloody battle.

The acting is also largely physical. Reardon did perfectly well with the text, but the real attraction of his performance was his clear comfort and love of battle garments. No words are needed to perceive his discomfort in civilian clothes. His victor’s garland, scorned by Coriolanus, looks like a crown of thorns. His stylized makeup is uncomfortably flashy for a consul, but makes for menacing war paint in later scenes.

Reardon is far from the only star. Shakespeare in the Square has always had compelling ensemble in each play, and though not every performance in “Coriolanus” was equally absorbing, the familiarity and ability of each actor was clear.

Shakespeare in the Square has a record of excellence in their Washington Square Park productions, and in this venture into ticketed theater, their record remains untarnished.

The production competes with Red Bull Theater, a few blocks away on Barrow St. From the intense dedication of the actors to the environment crafted with every theatrical tool to the shocking and painful ultimate conclusion, this is a “Coriolanus” well worth seeing. Its appropriateness for this election, whether intentional or not, makes it almost a required show to see this month.

DG: The original idea came to me when I was reading an article on Pitchfork, and I realized that I loved the writers’ articles, but I didn’t entirely like how they presented it. I decided to create a platform where normal people could review music themselves. I don’t know how to code, so Kurrent Music started off on a blog website — like Weebly — and I would get artists to submit songs and enter contests. My father owns a software company, and he saw the potential in the concept so he decided to hire people to develop the

website that we have today, creating the developing team that still exists in Miami. It’s because of this team that Kurrent Music is also a tech company — because they started working with some guys in Silicon Valley to work on apps and create virtual reality templates to pitch to companies like Fifa to use.

WSN: How did you bring it to New York City after starting it in Miami?

DG: We currently have three teams right now: Miami, Venezuela and New York. When I came to New York, I decided that I wanted to create a community that leaned more towards a grassroots, college-type of feel. We create[d] casual videos of college musicians that led to the creation of Dorm Sessions, which has become pretty popular. We also have intimate concerts where local college musicians can perform and share live renditions of their music.

WSN: How is it helpful to musicians and music listeners?

DG: For musicians, Dorm Sessions provide students with high quality videos and audio that they can use in the future. Also, when people submit their music, their names will come up on other artists’ pages if they tag them. For music listeners, we allow anyone to be able to review music without having to be a music critic.

WSN: Are you planning to expand into other areas?

DG: Yes, we are actually working on a lot of things. The main one being that in Miami, we’re pitching a

TV show idea for our Latin American audience. In the long run, the ideal goal would be to add a record label aspect to the company.

WSN: We know that you make your own music. How would you describe your style?

DG: Right now, my music has been dancier and leaning towards pop with a hint of psychedelic music. I’ve recently decided that I really like disco so that’s been coming up in my music along with my decision to start DJ-ing lately. When I started this semester with my friend, we got the attention of a DJ booker and obtained a residency at Paul’s in SoHo. So I guess you could say things are going pretty well.

Fighting the Good Fight

The boxing movie is a cinematic trope that has been replicated, inverted and adapted countless times since the likes of “Raging Bull” and the “Rocky” franchise.

It remains a popular choice because of the physical and emotional toll that a sport like boxing can take on its athletes. The athletes’ only opponents are other individuals whom they have to physically attack and weaken for 12 rounds of combat. If they lose, be it by knockout or a split-second mistake, the accountability falls solely upon their shoulders.

Such mental and physical gymnastics, especially the inner machinations of what lead to them, make for riveting film adaptations.

Ben Younger’s new “Bleed For This,” a beautifully crafted, highly stylized take on the trope, is yet another step in the right direction for the sub-genre.

The film centers around the trials and tribulations of the boxer Vinny Paz, formerly known as Vinny Pazienza, in what may be actor Miles Teller’s best performance today on screen. It follows Pazienza’s career from near irrelevance to potential career-ending

injury and back into the spotlight. The film is shot with deft precision by Younger. It hinges on the performances of Teller and Aaron Eckhart, who assumes the role of Pazienza’s trainer, Kevin Rooney.

Teller disappears into his character, a quick-witted, fast talking workaholic with a thick Providence accent. The first scene sets Pazienza up skillfully. For the first fight in the film, Pazienza is late for the weigh-in. Pazienza’s father Angelo (Ciaran Hinds) feverishly dials Vinny’s number on a payphone in the weigh-in area, gets Vinny on the other line and exasperatedly asks where he is.

As it happens, Vinny is in his hotel room getting wrapped in plastic-wrap in his underwear, pedaling feverishly on a stationary bike. This opening sequence gives the viewer a point of entry into Pazienza’s psyche. He loves boxing enough to do whatever it takes to make weight for a fight — but he also loves himself enough to not care that he’s holding up the fight itself in the process.

Eckhart serves as the film’s emotional center in a role that renders him virtually unrecognizable. Eckhart’s Rooney is a balding, pot-bellied, hard-living boxing coach in

a tracksuit. Surrounded by his demons, Rooney displaces all of that negative energy into boxing.

The scenes where, despite orders from his family and medical professionals, Pazienza begs Rooney to continue training him through his life-threatening injuries are emotionally arresting to watch. The emotional interplay lays bare both characters. It’s not that Pazienza or Rooney think this is necessarily a good idea; it’s that even if they didn’t, they have no control over what they need to do in order to feel alive.

In the scenes in the hospital and on the path to rehabilitation, Teller is extraordinary. He acts like a man who is in excruciating pain, but does not particularly care — a hard balance to strike.

The movie only falters when it leans back on the crutches that are the conventions of the boxing movies of years gone by. If you strip this film of its cliches and conventions, and supplement that with more procedural and familial moments, it would be a stellar film — not just about a boxer’s life, but about life through boxing.

Tisch Prof Teaches Female Inmates

The 70 aspiring actors in Tisch’s Stella Adler studio aren’t professor Joanne Edelmann’s only students.

Each week for the past two years, Edelmann has been traveling uptown to teach her movement techniques class at Rikers Island, the holding jail on the East River between Queens and the Bronx. For Edelmann, seeing how art changes the women she works with is the best part of teaching her class.

Over a hundred women have come and gone. Edelmann teaches twice a week, helping the women at Rikers develop a movement project much like her students’ at Stella Adler.

The culmination of the class is a performance on Wednesday, Nov. 16. Nine women will perform a movement project for an audience of students, teachers, officials and other incarcerated women based on a quote from novelist Eudora Welty, poets Sonia Sanchez and Yusef Komunyakaa as well as their own poetry.

Edelmann, who is a professor in the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, one of the undergraduate Tisch drama studios, was previously a modern dancer.

Drawing from her own background as well as acting, voice and speech techniques, Edelmann created a class for students at Stella Adler. It focuses on helping actors find characters through movement and the vehicle of poetry.

“Many, many years ago Tom Oppenheim, who is the artistic director [of Stella Adler], said to me, ‘You should be reading poetry,’” Edelmann said. “And so I got hooked and started curating the Harold Clurman poetry reading series here. Then, I discovered I couldn’t teach my movement class without first starting with a poem.”

These movement technique classes create movement projects, which combine dance and poetry in a way that Edelmann explained as “getting your inner life to the outside.”

With a backdrop of music and poetry as dialogue, students convey emotions and better understand their characters with movement, which ranges from dance to body language to simple gestures. Edelmann believes movement is essential to understanding a character.

“Stella Adler, who founded the studio, said that the body is the first communicator,” Edelmann said. “Words lie, but the body doesn’t.”

Edelmann, although truly dedicated to her work, describes parts of her experience working at the prison as a tragedy.

“These are women who have been steeped in poverty their whole lives. They’ve been abused. They have committed heinous crimes or have been accused of it. I see them only as who they are right here today,” Edelmann said. “Just going into the jail is very difficult, but once the class begins and it’s just the relationship between teacher and student, then it’s as if I were teaching here [at Stella Adler]. And then of course, I leave, and they remain, so that’s difficult.”

Still, she continues, because she believes in the power of art to change people and to brighten the outlook of an uncertain future.

“They’ll say things like, ‘When I get out I’m going to make sure to bring my son to museums.’ It changes the culture,” Edelmann said. “I’ve always believed that art changes people and changes the world, but then actually seeing these women and how the work has changed them confirms it.”

In a world where convenience is key, Tapingo gives students the opportunity to skip the lines and order food from anywhere to be ready by the time you get there.

But for some NYU students, this only happens in a perfect world.

Tapingo works with 40 different dining locations, including several that accept Dining Dollars. The app is designed to allow users to grab their food and go, but in practice students face many problems.

LS sophomore Sophia Solana said that her Tapingo drink at Starbucks has been stolen four times before. At the Faye’s Starbucks, employees simply put Tapingo drinks on the side bar when ready and leave them for students to pick up when they arrive.

“I only use it now when I can get there early,” Solana said. “If you tell the employees, they just make you order it again, so you pay twice. In my case, that’s already like $18. I personally feel

they should have some kind of confirmation when you pick up your order.”

Students with problems can contact Tapingo through the app, but according to Solana, the process isn’t as easy as it sounds.

“They’re super informal and unprofessional,” Solana said.

One time, Solana said that Tapingo charged her twice, so she contacted them to cancel the second order. Instead, they canceled both, and she waited for 20 minutes for a drink that had apparently been canceled, forcing her to leave for class empty-handed.

Steinhardt sophomore Emily Chambers has also had problems with being charged twice for her Tapingo orders.

“I use Tapingo because it's more convenient and faster than waiting in line, but I sometimes have problems with paying for Tapingo,” Chambers said. “I've been charged twice before. Also I've sometimes had a problem with it actually taking longer than if I had just waited in line, because

I go when the app tells me it's done and it hasn't been started or something.”

Steinhardt freshman Jennifer Zhang also has had her drink stolen and has been given an incorrect wait time. Zhang also reported a problem with the system sometimes being down for places from where she wants to order.

“I usually go to Argo, but it’s been down for awhile,” Zhang said. “So I came [to Faye’s Starbucks] instead, but they said it was ready 15 minutes ago. I wish they had more accurate wait times.”

Still, some students choose to use it rather than wait in line, like CAS freshman Emily Snider.

“It’s so convenient. I love it,” Snider said. “I’ve been waiting 25 minutes for my drink, but it’s a really busy Starbucks.”

Tapingo definitely has some major problems, but whether or not the risk is worth skipping the line is ultimately up to you.

As the weather gets colder and food becomes even more scarce, the holidays should be a time for all of us to not only be thankful for all that we have but to consider the less fortunate and give back.

If You Have a Free Day… Volunteer Cathedral High School (350 E. 56th St.) is having a day full of community service opportunities involving no-sew blankets, snowglobes, cards and DIY Christmas decorations on Nov. 19.

For something you can do on the day of, Family-to-Family, an organization that connects people to families in need, is hosting a Stuff a Shirt project. As you plan on stuffing your stomachs with food, they ask families to stuff large T-shirts with items pertaining to personal hygiene — items that are often neglected.

If You Want to Eat Thanksgiving Dinner Out…Choose a Restaurant that Gives Back If you’re planning on getting a Thanksgiving meal with friends, check out these restaurants that are donating a percentage of their profits to charities. Bubby’s will be giving 25 percent of proceeds to NYC Rescue Mission, which helps homeless men and women by providing them not

only with food and clothing, but also with recovery programs and opportunities to find careers.

Melissa Silver, co-owner of Bubby’s, keeps the values of the holiday in mind when running her restaurant, which opened on Thanksgiving Day 26 years ago.

“It is a time to reflect on blessings and to give back to neighbors who need [our] help,” Silver said.

In Brooklyn, the Buttermilk Channel is partnering with Neighbors Together again this Thanksgiving and donating 15 percent of proceeds from their three-course dinner as well.

Neighbors Together is an organization that focuses on helping the homeless in low-income areas of Brooklyn.

Soup kitchens have a high volume of volunteers on the days leading up to Thanksgiving, but lose many after when they are left with a mess after the big day. Stop by after Thanksgiving and volunteer to help clean up.

Break Through Your Breakouts

Perfect skin is a physical trait that we all covet but only a select few possess naturally. For those of us who aren’t so lucky, it seems as though there are constantly new products, tools and diets that promise clear skin, but they never quite seem to pan out. It’s time to set the record straight: what is acne, and how can we get rid of it once and for all? As it turns out, it’s much simpler than one might expect.

Acne is formed when excess bacteria, oil and dead skin cells build up and cause clogged pores, resulting in different types of acne such as blackheads, whiteheads, inflammatory and cystic acne. Although genetics certainly plays a large role in the severity and frequency of breakouts, there are other hormonal and environmental factors that contribute. For instance, many females tend to experience a flare-up of acne before and during their menstrual period due to the hormonal changes that occur around that time. That said, many men and women alike continue to deal with breakouts throughout their adult lives, even though we typically associate acne with puberty and our teenage years.

If you are suffering from regular breakouts, reducing your dairy intake may help clear your skin, according to Dr. Nada Elbuluk, MD, a dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at NYU

Langone Medical Center. Although rumors of superfoods and fad diets to reduce acne seem to be constantly circulating, Elbuluk recommends simply maintaining a well-balanced diet all around to achieve a clear complexion.

Stress is another common cause of acne that plagues many college students.

“I definitely notice that I break out around finals time, or when something in my life is making me really anxious,” Gallatin freshman Allison Daley said.

Accordingly, even if the last thing you want to do after a stressful night of studying is carry out your skincare routine, taking those extra measures is exactly what your skin needs most.

Regarding that all-important skincare routine, Elbuluk advises not to go overboard when it comes to using acne products.

“Sometimes people think that washing your face many times a day is going to make it cleaner, but you’re actually going to cause dryness and irritation if you overdo it,” Elbuluk said.

Using a gentle cleanser every morning and night will suffice. Try a face wash with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to help fight acne, but keep the rest of your routine free of acne products so as not to irritate the skin.

While there are evidently many ways one can go about clearing a breakout, we all have those days when those blemishes just

won’t go away. If you continue having problems with your skin despite regularly using over-thecounter acne medications, Elbuluk thinks it might be time to see a certified dermatologist.

“People should know there are a lot of treatments for acne. There’s topical and oral medications, as well as procedures that we do for acne that can be very helpful.”

It’s important to realize that no two cases of acne are exactly alike, so what works for one person may not work as well for you. Even if your acne isn’t severe, it’s always a good idea to visit a dermatologist for a personal assessment so you can determine what your skin in particular needs.

‘Forbidden’ Turns ‘Hamilton’ Violet

“Forbidden NYU: (Andrew) Hamilton Edition” is a professional and meticulously-planned comedic musical written and choreographed entirely by student members of the College of Arts and Science Theatre. The entire show was comprised of NYUthemed parodies of famous musical acts, and the title itself poked fun at the fact that NYU’s newest president shares his name with the hit Broadway musical.

Co-director Jonah Foxman said that his goal for this show was to make “the audience feel the energy on stage and their mission to make the world a more positive place to live in.”

The event was designed to make students laugh and enjoy a communal theater experience. Co-director and choreographer Allie Gillespie wanted the audience to realize that even though students pay ridiculous amounts of money to be here, NYU is home.

Act One opened with the song “We Go To NYU,” which is a rendition of “We Are The Altar Boyz” from the musical “Altar Boyz.” The show continued with songs about paying loans (“The Bitch of Paying”/“The Bitch of Living”); Freshman Year Residential Experience dorms and

the stereotyped freshmen who live there, including a conservative Minnesotan who did not know what a condom was and a rich girl whose father pulled some strings to land her a spot in Gramercy Green Residence Hall her first year (“FYRE Shock Tango”/“Cell Block Tango”); the excitement of studying abroad and the inevitable homesickness that comes with it (“When I’m Abroad”/“When I Grow Up”); and the diverse characters you tend to meet at your first floor meeting (“Floor Meeting”/“Do-Re-Mi”).

The parody show mocked the lack of sports teams and Greek life at NYU, as well as the complexity of tapping your NYU ID to get into a dorm, entering your birthday on the keypad and somehow messing up and suffering momentary humiliation. It also poked fun at Gallatin students’ courses and majors (under-

water basket weaving, anyone?) and Tisch kids in general.

Act Two started with one of the classics, “Seasons of Loans” (“Seasons of Love”). This song was a crowd-pleaser because it was so relatable. One of the best songs was “Red and Black,” an homage to “Les Misérables” in which students sang about their bloodshot eyes and black coffee while studying for midterms and trying to find a seat in Bobst. The topics shifted from loans and studying to relationship struggles, from straight guy struggles (“Straight Guy’s Lament”/“Belle (Reprise)”) to girls’ struggles to find straight guys (“One Gay More”/“One Day More”).

By ALEX BAZELEY Editor-in-Chief To someone outside the school, mentioning the words “mental health” and “NYU” in the same breath might evoke memories of news headlines from the early 2000s, when six students committed suicide in the span of a single year.

To someone who knows the school, though — whether it’s a student or an administrator — things are a little more complicated than a news update.

Take Chris Hallowell, a CAS senior studying economics who transferred to NYU from the University of Florida during his junior year. He suffers from major depressive disorder coupled with bouts of anxiety, and he wants to see a world where telling someone you struggle with a mental illness is as normal as telling someone you have a cold.

“It’s about normalizing it, and in general making it more a part of your everyday life,” Hallowell said.

For him, mental health on college campuses is about finding a community you’re comfortable in, and that means accepting that everyone struggles with these issues. If you’re going to struggle anywhere, Hallowell thinks college is actually the best place to do it.

“You allow yourself to fail in this nice environment where you have this support around you,” he said. “It’s just like a big experiment. I’m a mad scientist of life, I like

to say.”

But it isn’t always that simple.

A study from this year by the American College Health Association found that 30 percent of college students felt their academic work was inhibited by depression in the last 12 months. Half of college students felt set back by anxiety.

This is where something like Active Minds comes into play. The group is a national organization on college campuses designed to raise awareness about mental illness among students on a peer-to-peer level. Chapters exist at various schools and are entirely student run.

NYU’s chapter is known for events like Stress Less Week, a slew of events right before finals that encourage students to take a deep breath and relax.

Seema Chaudhari, a CAS junior, is a copresident of the Active Minds chapter at NYU. She is diagnosed with bipolar II disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder and has had episodes in the past that have left her scarred both physically and emotionally.

“Our aim is to make it more open,” Chaudhari said. “The reason I talk about this stuff is that I want people to know and that it’s more common than people think it is.”

A first generation Indian-American, Chaudhari has struggled to find the support in her home life for her mental health issues. Coming to NYU, she expected there to be a support system that would help her if she needed it.

However, multiple experiences with faculty and staffers not understanding the issues she was up against has left a bitter taste in her mouth.

The problems came to a head while she was taking an organic chemistry course.

At the time, Chaudhari was taking a full course load on t h e

pre-health track, and while she was acing her three other classes, she was in disarray with organic chemistry, despite the fact that she understood the material.

She explained her situation to her professor, expecting understanding from him that her mental health was something beyond her control. But instead of working with her on how she could improve her standing in the class, her professor encouraged her to withdraw.

“There’s some faculty that are extremely unsympathetic,” Chaudhari said. “And there’s some that are incredibly nice and understanding and willing to work with you. Unfortunately, it took me quite a while to know how to approach the professors with tact.

It’s a sentiment that is echoed by many people, especially at NYU. Located in the heart of Manhattan, college life here can be overwhelming and hard to handle. Couple that with the pressure to have an internship, engage yourself in extracurriculars and maintain a steady social life and it can sometimes be downright impossible to stay levelheaded at all times.

But more than anything else, life in New York City can be lonely and isolating, which is why Chaudhari emphasizes the need for a robust mental health system at NYU — one that she’s struggled with at times.

NYU offers students counseling sessions in which they can talk with professionals about the problems they’re grappling with. The Student Health Center is open 55 hours a week to students without an appointment — it was only open for 15 in 2004.

Students have had mixed things to say about the resources that NYU offers, though.

An investigation by WSN last year uncovered that students found staff at the Student Health Center to be impersonal, often sending students on their way without a clear sense of direction. Sometimes, students are encouraged to simply withdraw from classes for the semester, a solution that Chaudhari doesn’t see to be all that helpful for students trying to learn how to cope with their mental illnesses.

“I think they don’t want to deal with the liability,” Chaudhari said. “I would imagine that after [2004] they really tried to cover their asses, get their counseling center up and running, get all these resources in place, basically make sure that if this happens again, attention doesn’t get drawn to NYU as an institution.”

She’s not the only one to feel this way. Other students that WSN talked to last year felt that the system was not adequately prepared to deal with them. One student characterized mental health initiatives as a box to check off.

Perhaps this is due to understaffing. But NYU is clearly making an effort — the university greatly expanded its resources following the suicides in the early aughts, overhauling its system and adding more staffers to the center.

The school had 25 clinicians at the time; now they have more than 50.

“The International Association of Counseling Services recommends one full-time-equivalent professional staff member per every 1,000 to 1,500 students,” said Zoe Ragouzeos,

the Executive Director of Counseling and Wellness Services at the Student Health Center. “We are doing better than that.”

Ragouzeos also brought up the work of LiveWellNYU, which aims to put issues of mental health at the forefront of the conversation among students. These initiatives led to the school receiving the Jed Foundation’s JedCampus seal for innovative mental health programs in 2013.

So maybe the problem isn’t the resources themselves; multiple students who have struggled with mental health have said that most of the tools are there.

The problem, it seems, is that the university doesn’t make those tools apparent enough.

“I really don’t think the university does a good enough job of really making it more known that it’s a pretty good chance that you’re going to struggle with mental illness at some point, or your best friend is going to struggle with it,” Hallowell said.

This is something Ragouzeos pushed back on, saying that NYU has an assertive stance in their outreach to students.

It’s true that many of the resources are there if you know where to look. In addition, freshmen are treated to the Reality Show during Welcome Week, which drills in the number for the 24-hour Wellness Exchange hotline that NYU students should call if they ever need help.

“The hotline received over 20,000 calls last year and many were from friends, family members, professors and other administrators who were concerned about particular students,” Ragouzeos said. “We outreach to all of them offering our assistance.”

Students today, however, are under increasing stress. Anxiety among college students has gone up in recent years, and more students than ever are trying to balance studies with a job — 70 percent work while taking classes.

Going to school in New York City can prove to be difficult if you just want a normal college experience. And when there’s so much pressure to succeed, many students find it hard to talk about their afflictions, choosing instead to put up a facade that there is nothing wrong. Expecting them to go out of their way to address something they don’t even know how to fully acknowledge to themselves is a tall order.

Perhaps that’s where Active Minds can fill the void. They’re trying to get the ball rolling and bring the idea of mental health into everyday conversations. Some suggestions have been for the university to have a class that introduces freshmen to various mental health disorders, or to require sensitivity training of faculty so that they are better equipped to handle problems that students may be having.

Chaudhari makes sure to point out that Active Minds is not technically a support group.

They can, however, be used as a resource for students to find support and comfort.

“Mental illness is not something to be ashamed of or hide or not talk about or not reach out to people [about] when you need help,” she said. “It’s important that people know that they’re able to reach out, that they have a community, that people aren’t going to judge them.”

By BOBBY WAGNER Managing Editor It was the first week of October when NYU hockey Head Coach Chris Cosentino taped up a list of name pairings onto the main wall of his team’s locker room.

“He came into practice and there was a list on the main wall,” senior forward David Shaby said. “Next to every player’s name on the list was another name, and he said ‘This is gonna be something new that we do this year.’”

Cosentino calls this “something new” the wingman program, an experiment in the Violet locker room. Every player is paired up with a teammate — his wingman, for better or for worse. When a guy is late, he skates extra laps — so does his wingman. When a guy has a busy schedule, he lets Cosentino know he needs a day off. His wingman testifies for him.

“Really what these pairings are is a way of keeping an eye on one another and supporting each other,” Cosentino said. “Whether someone’s having a tough time academically, athletically, socially or whatever it is, we’ll go to their wingman and say, ‘Hey what’s going on here? Are you talking to him? Are you helping out?’”

It’s no secret that college students are strung out on stress, and that stress can have adverse effects on mental health. According to NYU’s website, a hair under 60 percent of college students classify as more stressed than the average individual. Almost onethird of college students have their normal daily function interrupted by depression, and nearly 20 percent say that it interferes with their academic performance. All this is to say nothing of the pre-professional climate that is unique to NYU and the go, go, go attitude that distinguishes New York City. New Yorkers consistently test higher in stress levels pertaining to aspects of life like money, work, family health and personal health, according to an American Psychological Association study from 2012. In the same study, more than one-third of New Yorkers claimed to have a rising stress level after just one year of living here. Imagine what it’s like to an aimless twenty-something after four.

Being away from home, for many, is hard.

Being away from home in New York City is harder. Being away from home at NYU — a school of many small communities but which struggles to cultivate one large community — may be the hardest of all. That is, until you find that one community.

“Being a part of a team, especially with the hockey team where we have 28 guys, you have 28 other people going through the same things you are,” Cosentino said. “New York City can be a lonely place — especially with the expectations and the academic workload, the distractions.”

The diversity of club type at NYU is astounding. You name it, it’s probably in the directory. Girls Who Lift? Get swole. A recreational puzzle club called Puzzled for Good? Of course. Cheese Club? Sure. But the one thing that unites all of these clubs is the sense of camaraderie that comes with them. It brings the shy out of their shells.

It puts leaders in a position to bond with uncertain freshmen.

“I’m pretty shy, so it’s nice to know that I don’t necessarily have to constantly step out of my comfort zone,” Molly Potter, a CAS junior and president of the NYU Quidditch Club, said. “These are things that I wouldn’t have done by myself, but when I had a whole bunch of people telling me to go to this, that really helped me feel more connected to NYU.” And much like hockey’s wingman program, Quidditch provided Potter a place where she could bridge the gap between seniors who seemed like they had their lives in order and those such as herself — a freshman who balked at making new friends in her classes. Now in her third year at NYU, Potter is paying that forward to the fresh faces of the club.

“I’m a tutor at the writing center, so I read other people on the team’s essay if they need help,” Potter said. “That’s what’s so nice about having this mix of freshmen and sophomores and juniors and seniors — there’s people who are there to tell you what classes to take, what professors are good, how to get through this class or whatever it may be.”

Now more than ever, as the national political climate uproots the comfort of individuals on campus, community serves as a sturdy support. This past Friday, the Student Labor Action Movement organized “Collective Support Space” in Kimmel, which the group described as an event “for folks to process, discuss, grieve, and express in the wake of our national election.” CAS senior Katie Shane, a member of SLAM for three years, said being part of a club goes beyond just interwoven communities. Clubs are a chance to learn invaluable skills that bring the best out of students.

“What’s really unique about [clubs like SLAM] is that they equip people to feel like they are empowered and they do have the ability to make change,” Shane said. “Doing that in an environment of people who believe and support you and are willing to teach you how to use certain skills is really important.”

In amplified political climates where it feels like politics are in every conversation, Shane said that students are looking for any opportunity they can take to make their voice heard.

“Right now, people are really activated and willing to do things, but they don’t have the tools to do that,” Shane said. “I think a group like SLAM gives people the tools to do that and allows people to learn those tools.”

But even when the national climate is not thick with tension, clubs set a foundation of compassion and promote good mental health. Something as small as a club’s channel on Slack — a group messaging platform for groups — can be replete with compassion.

“Slack is something where people can share as much or as little as they want,” Shane said. “There have been instances where I’ve been like, ‘Hey y’all, I know we have a meeting tonight but I have to take

some self care.’ And people are like, ‘Yeah, do it. Let me know if I can help, let me know if there’s something you need, let me know if I can deliver dinner to you.’ It’s really just no questions asked, take some time for yourself.”

Strapping up with a club is no surefire guarantee to avoid compromised mental health.

Nothing is. But in the right community, you might have found the first place you can turn when backed into a corner.

“It keeps you organized. It helps keep you stable,” Shaby said.

“Seeing that everyone is able to embrace that family mentality is really cool. We all are family.”

Male Objectification Does Not Compare

By ANNIE COHEN Staff Writer Once a year, People magazine releases its Sexiest Man Alive issue, in which they bestow the designation upon one of Hollywood’s most conventionally attractive men. The partnership between People and the Sexiest Man is mutually beneficial, as the magazine generates a substantial amount of buzz, as does the Sexiest Man, who also tends to coincidentally have a movie or album out around the time of his win. Meanwhile, a cursory glance at any newsstand at any given time reveals a vast array of magazines adorned with images

of scantily-clad — if clad at all — women with tantalizing headlines that promise even more inside. Often, the women on these magazines like Playboy or GQ are nameless models, faces and bodies without an identity.

In both of these scenarios, a person is being objectified. To reduce any person to essentially their physical appearance alone is wrong. That said, the latter situation is far more damaging and insidious than the former.

So widespread is the dominance of men that society begins to tune it out. To see female talk show hosts jokingly admire and praise a man’s body is inherently operating on a certain

level of irony. Audiences laugh at this simply because the standard is being subverted, and it is so startling that it’s funny.

Hop on to any subway train and chances are some of the ads will be for plastic surgeons, punctuated with suggestive photos of women along with sharp language designed to make them feel inferior. For women, there

is simply no escape from the knowledge that our bodies are constantly being scrutinized.

There is no equivalent of this for men.

To compare the objectification of women to the objectification of men is to create a false binary. Men make up 96 percent of CEOs in the Fortune 500. White women make 75 cents on every dollar men make.

The United States Senate is currently 80 percent male. Just last week, America elected a president who shames women for gaining weight and brags about grabbing them by their genitals, as if they are objects for him to claim. When a grotesquely

bigoted and unqualified man is better trusted with power than a woman with a myriad of qualifications and decades of experience, it is clear that society is not operating on level ground.

Decrying the objectification of male bodies is like claiming that All Lives Matter: it is stating a generalization that is technically true while neglecting to recognize the nuance, history and differences involved. When a man is objectified, he is objectified as part of a one time event. When a woman is objectified, she is objectified by society.

The Objectification of Men Cannot Be Ignored

By HENRY COHEN Contributing Writer If female sexualization in the media demeans women, the same must be said for men. Daytime shows like “Ellen” and “Days of Our Lives” are known for their casual incorporation of shirtless men. But rarely are these programs scrutinized in their portrayals of men as sexual objects, especially in relation to the vast scrutiny applied to how women are portrayed. While it is undeniable that women are objectified more than men in the media, to dismiss the sexualization of men out of hand reduces discussions of gender roles as being purely about the experiences of one gender.

Following the #Hunks tag on Ellen’s website reveals 50 plus clips of shirtless Chippendale men whose sole purpose it seems is to send the mostly-female studio audience into conniption fits. These segments are all done in good fun and the men are never genuinely insulted. However, the sexual objectification is incontrovertible, as these men are presented to the audience without personality or humanity. They serve the same purpose that Barker’s Beauties did on “The Price Is Right” — unapologetic eye candy.

One counter argument to this idea is that the objectification of men is simply a reaction to the objectification suffered by women. In other words, women

cannot be held responsible for this behavior because they are the victims of objectification, not its perpetrators. But this argument would never hold water in any other scenario. People of color are not entitled to some amount of bigotry because of the racism many of them have suffered. Queer folks do not get a pass if they decide to marginalize or demean someone else’s

sexuality. This thinking otherwise betrays the kind of ethically inconsistent logic that allows people to use victim status as a means of excusing hypocritical behavior. In the end, all it does is perpetuate cycles of bias and cognitive dissonance that benefit no one.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with shirtless men being paraded around on television. As a gay man, I had no problem doing research for this piece, and clearly Ellen is successful and beloved. Even Barker’s Beauties have had to get with the times, adding several hunky male models to their lineup in the past few years. The issue comes when what is acceptable for one gen-

der would be unthinkable for the other, and if a show like “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” or “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” had featured enough attractive commodified women for a #Babes section on their website, hell would rain down on their studio. By the same token, people who condemn the objectification of one gender cannot in good conscience forgive the objectification of the other. It is inconsistent and it is wrong. Those who truly desire gender equality have to reject double standards regardless of which gender they benefit.

Thank Racism, Not Anti-Elitism, For Trump

By MATTHEW PERRY Staff Writer The first step in defeating President-elect Donald Trump is correctly identifying how he won, and on this count, the left is already failing. In the aftermath of Trump’s victory, people on the left wrote and shared articles and commentary which deflected blame for Trump’s success off of his voters. They opted instead to blame liberal elites who failed to adequately address the political concerns of the working class, driving them into Trump’s arms. This take is inaccurate, and eludes the real reason behind his victory: white male racial and sexist backlash.

Pinning blame on the actions and

attitudes of liberal elites assumes that the impetus for the white working class’s embrace of Trump was primarily a medley of anti-elitism and valid economic concerns.

Anyone who watched Trump these past 17 months should know better.

He started his campaign by calling Mexican immigrants rapists; he has repeatedly disparaged women with derogatory language, he has suggested that all Muslims are extremists, that blacks are simultaneously dangerous animals and hopeless victims and hinted that Jews comprise a shadowy cabal that controls the global economy. Bigotry is not incidental to Trump’s appeal — it is the only consistent part of it.

Moreover, Trump’s electoral support from whites of every income

level demonstrates that colorblind “populist discontent” is not the thread that ties Trump voters together. That thread is race, and pretending otherwise is sophistry at its most elusive and dangerous.

This misdiagnosis matters because the left’s attempts to woo the white working class back into its coalition implicitly accepts the appeasement of anti-black policy.

Too many leftists have pushed for

outreach to the white working class without considering what that would actually look like. As history and present make blazingly clear, the white working class’s most notable collective policy preference is white tribalism. We saw this with the rise of the Know-Nothing Party in the early 20th century, for example. Their successful inclusion requires obliging anti-black, anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim policy. Even worse, understanding the stakes and attempting inclusion anyway would sacrifice the wellbeing of our already vulnerable nonwhite citizens. The only responsible path forward is rejecting romantic overtures to disaffected, white Trump supporters. Democrats must instead double down on anti-racism

efforts and organize to repeal the legal and social conditions that artificially suppress the political clout of minorities.

Whereas the past half-century of politics have tried to reject overt racism in favor of quieter institutionalized versions, however Donald Trump has announced its presence with a bullhorn. Minimizing his victory isn’t just bad politics and it doesn’t just threaten future Democratic candidates. By attempting to include the white working class in their coalition, liberals are abandoning Americans who need help the most — the minorities oppressed by Trump and his followers.

Dropping Out Isn’t Cool

By HAO LY Contributing Writer Most students have questioned the value of a college education at one point or another during their academic careers, and NYU students are no different. In addition to the obviously high monetary costs, a college degree also requires a substantial investment of time to complete. The decision to go through college is often one that students cannot afford to take lightly. Under these precarious circumstances, students can find themselves susceptible to the temptation of dropping out of school altogether. While reasons for dropping out can differ greatly from one another, most of them are similar in that they sacrifice long term reward for short term gains. Students with their long term benefits in mind should play it safe and remain in college.

Perhaps one of the most influential advocates for students forgoing college is PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel. Thiel argues that the cost of college is often not justified and the time students spend

“[sitting] in a classroom” could be spent on pursuing their dreams.

This is a dangerous message to send because not only is it indicative of the sort of rhetoric that students are exposed to when considering dropping out of college, but it is also very misleading.

In today’s economy, the difference in average earnings between a person with a college degree and a person without one is astronomical. A study shows that throughout one’s career, on average a college graduate can expect to earn roughly $650,000 more in their lifetime than a high school graduate. This difference is more than enough to justify the cost of college. The second part of Thiel’s message — that students should pursue their passions first and that they can always return to

college if things don’t work out — is equally dangerous. Firstly, as Georgetown University professor Cal Newport points out in his book “So Good They Can’t Ignore You,” it is not sustainable for students to try to pursue their dreams without the prerequisite education and experience. Secondly, if students fail, returning to college doesn’t always work out for them. In fact, of all the students who re-enrolled in college between 2005 and 2008, only a third graduated. Therefore, by dropping out of college, students not only risk losing a substantial amount of money but they also risk being trapped in a scenario where they have no more dreams to follow and no degree.

While there are certainly students who have dropped out and have become very successful, these cases are few and far between. For the majority of students, it’s probably best to wait it out and watch as the college degree pays for itself in the long run.

Residence Hall Fire Drills Have Wrong Priorities

Being startled in the middle of the night by an unexpected fire alarm can be irritating, but it is an unavoidable part of dorm life.

Thanks to RA policy, however, residents often begin to frantically look around their rooms for prohibited items instead of immediately evacuating the halls.

For some residents, the idea that their RAs are allowed to go into their rooms and check for any unauthorized materials, including alcohol, looms over them during fire drills. During emergency situations, it is counter-productive to have groups of students who do not want to get written up spend time hiding their alcohol instead of getting out of the building as quickly as possible.

According to a blog post penned by an NYU RA a few years ago, one of the duties of the position is to take master keys and check rooms to make sure that all students have evacuated the building during a fire drill. RAs are also expected to report any vio-

lations of fire safety policies or other conditions to the residence hall director, which may include “hazardous/prohibited materials in rooms or hallways.” Some aspects of this rule are justifiable.

When there is prohibited furniture or flammable items that could prevent a speedy evacuation, directors should take action. But the policy also means that RAs are allowed to go into a resident’s room during a fire drill and write them up for any alcohol in possession. It is obviously not okay for underage students to have alcohol in their dorms since the possession of these materials are against housing policy, but fire evacuations are not the time to enforce this rule.

NYU has sought to create a safe and legal campus with respect to

drinking. But even after implementing understandably strict rules and mandatory online tutorials, the school knows that some underage students will drink. It is therefore ridiculous that the university creates an environment where students, who may or may not have alcohol in their room, think they need to hide it before evacuating the building.

Residents can hardly know if an alarm is signaling a real fire or just a drill, so people who do not want to be written up will spend valuable time hiding their alcohol even in the midst of a potentially life-threatening situation.

This means that it is unlikely for an RA to find some alcohol lying around and, if a potentially dangerous fire were to occur, students would likely be putting themselves in jeopardy to avoid getting written up. If the administration wants to be proactive about alcohol awareness, they should address it directly, not during a high-stakes evacuation.

Post-Election Care of Students Isn’t Coddling

Following the presidential election, students, like so many other Americans, were devastated. Professors have taken steps to address these circumstances, from canceling class to making midterms optional. NYU professors have also given extensions on assignments or cancelled classes, and campus organizations have held events to address the grief many students feel. Right-wing media outlets have alluded to these instances as more examples of coddling on college campuses, where students’ hurt feelings are supposedly considered more important than an education suited for the real world. There is no reason to vilify university communities which only seek to foster an inclusive and supportive environment on campus.

Because this distress is felt largely by liberal students, conservative media outlets have chosen to paint colleges as places for young people to become soft. In doing so, they are fanning the flames of the propagandic dumpster fire of a crusade against politically correct culture in the 2016 election cycle. Regardless of whether conservatives judge students’ grief to be valid, the shared trauma experienced by students is undeniable and was appropriately taken into consideration. In a situation where a large majority of students are emotionally compromised and unable to perform their work, it is the job of the professor to recognize that and accommodate it.

It does not matter which candidate a professor voted for; a professor’s job is to serve the students. Postponing exams and other deadlines is simply making sure students can turn in their best work. If a student was in distress due to mental health issues or personal tragedy, the professor would be doing the same thing. No matter if someone feels the same grief as these students, the emotion still exists and professors should respect that. Furthermore, all students in these classes — regardless of political leanings — reap the benefit of delayed deadlines. If a professor postponed a test or assignment for any other reason, no one would be complaining. This should be no different. We would hope the same actions would be taken if students had reacted the same to another candidate’s victory.

It is a time-honored tradition for media, on both sides of the aisle, to exaggerate any sort of vaguely political action on college campuses. Yet it is clear that this election has been understandably trying for minorities and women, who have seen incidents of bigoted behavior escalate in the last few days. Professors are responsible for fostering an academic environment that is not only conducive to learning, but inspires it. Students — whether Republican or Democrat — cannot reasonably be expected to live up to their fullest academic potential immediately following such an impactful event. Professors should be allowed the authority to determine what is best for their own classroom. Demonizing them for doing the right thing is not only unproductive, but damaging to the students who are currently the most vulnerable.

By RACHEL RUECKER Sports Editor Coming hot on the heels of a motivated performance last weekend after a promotion to ACHA Division I, the NYU hockey team hoped to continue on their 9-1 hot streak on Saturday in Albany against Siena College.

The game was a high-scoring affair, beginning on the tail end of a 4-on-4 that turned into an NYU penalty kill, upon which Siena capitalized to put the opposing team up by one. NYU got a 10-minute misconduct before going down by another. The Violets managed to go into the second with the Siena lead cut in half when sophomore forward John Kowalewski scored with 46 seconds left in the first.

The second got off to a contentious start with each team getting handed a five-minute major and a game misconduct. A Siena slashing call shortly after made the difference as NYU tied the game at

Hockey Tested, But Stands Tall

two thanks to freshman forward Brandon Ritchey.

Siena proved a formidable foe as it got back in front at 5:08.

Siena found itself in the driver’s seat once again as its players were gifted power play after power play, until late in the first when NYU finally tied things up at even strength at 17:53, this one coming again from Ritchey. Siena, not going down without a fight, came back and got the 4-3 goal before the second intermission.

The back and forth action kept going in the third, as NYU matched Siena at four 3:11 into the third on a freshman forward Kohl Donovan goal. But of course, this game was not one where the score stayed at one point for long, and Siena answered at 6:48. Sophomore forward Keaton Baum got the 5-5 goal later on in the third, giving NYU the chance to earn this one back in overtime.

It was junior forward Michael Conslato who finally tipped the scale, earning NYU’s sixth goal of

the night with a 1:09 on the clock in 3-on-3 overtime. Head Coach Chris Cosentino acknowledged that the game wasn’t their top showing on the season but gave them the opportunity to overcome adversity in a season that has largely been smooth sailing.

“Siena gave us a great battle last night,” Cosentino said. “I liked the way we stuck with it to find a way to win. It was not our best game, but a great test for our guys.”

Sunday afternoon, NYU traveled over to Troy to play Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, hoping to keep that hot streak going.

The Violets got on the board 4:04 in on a goal from junior forward Steven Esposito to start things off on the right skate. The score stood still until 5:48 into period two when RPI knotted things at one. The rest of the frame was plagued by penalties, including 5-on-3 chances for both teams.

“I mean, any time you go on the road and come back with two wins, it’s a big momentum builder for the team,” Ritchey said. “We still feel that we are just scratching the surface of how good we can be, but we hope to carry this momentum into our game Friday night in front of our home crowd vs. RPI.” Cosentino was pleased with how NYU matched RPI’s intensity on the ice.

“RPI was another good test, and they made us work for our chances,” Cosentino said. “Our power play did a great job today, and I was happy with our complete level after a real physical game last night.”

The Violets will be back home at the Chelsea Piers Sky Rink this Friday night as they take on RPI again. They’ll then head up to Poughkeepsie on Saturday to play Marist College.

Soccer Gears Up For Postseason

The calendar year may be coming to an end, but basketball season is just tipping off.

Both the NYU men’s and women’s teams are excited to finally put their new lineups to the test. This week, the women start their season on Tuesday, Nov. 15 against the Stevens Institute of Technology and the men are kicking theirs off with the Rose City Classic on Nov. 18 and 19.

Senior guard Joe Timmes, a four-year veteran of the team, has had the time to observe the ebb and flow a team can undergo. As the only senior this season, Timmes is ready to lead his team to victory.

“It’s my final year on the squad so I’m thrilled to lead these guys and get the season off to a positive note,” Timmes said. “We all are very excited to get out in a live game rather than just beating each other up in practice.”

Last season, the team graduated seven seniors who were all major contributors in the run to the NCAA Division III national tournament. Still, the absence of older players has made room for several qualified freshmen.

“We have a bunch of weapons on our team,” Timmes said.

“The majority of us haven’t even played a single college

left in the period. And they still had a man advantage to carry over into the third.

RPI managed to kill the penalty they started the third with, but got caught tripping up an NYU guy, putting them down once again. Senior defenseman Evan Ripley scored on the power play to give the Violets a 3-1 lead. Half a minute later, Baum took the game to near-blowout territory as he earned the Violets’ fourth. Ripley became the second multi-goal scorer on the night as he got the fifth tally at 7:11.

Junior defenseman Charles Arsenescu got tossed to the box with exactly two minutes left in the game, opening things up for RPI to get a second goal with two seconds left in the game, but the Violets still ran away with it, 5-2.

They now sit 11-1 on the season.

Ritchey, who scored a pair against Siena, thought this weekend was huge for the Violets, but that there is still more that can be done.

We each have our signature style and think we can exceed a lot of people’s expectations. The best part about being on the team is the camaraderie between all of us. We see each other every day and are always traveling together on the road, so it’s great to be with guys who care for you and got your back.”

But the men are not the only ones looking forward to a winning season. Women’s basketball is also prepared to start their season with a win on Tuesday night. And with three returning juniors and four seniors, the team is poised to make another run into the NCAA tournament.

Kaitlyn Read, who started in all 27 games last season along

with the other seniors, should be able to start off their winning streak this week. Awarded First Team All-East Region three years in a row, Read is an important contributor to the team and is expected to finish strong in her senior year. Additionally, each of the six incoming freshmen are coming in with immense skill. Working hard both in the weight room and in the gym, the team is getting stronger and is prepared to come out with a victory on Tuesday.

If their offseason bonding is any indicator of how their season will go, both teams should have a string of wins in the next few months.

Following a culmination to the regular season last weekend at Gaelic Park, both the men’s and women’s soccer teams began their postseasons this weekend as they competed in the ECAC Division III Championship. The men’s team played Saturday against Drew University in Camden, New Jersey, falling 3-1. The women’s team took to defending their home field Saturday against Stockton University and Sunday against William Paterson University, vanquishing them both to continue a late-season surge.

The men suffered a hard fought game against Drew, wrought with chippiness that resulted in seven yellow cards and a red card to Drew.

Drew’s first goal was scored in the 27th minute on senior goaltender Lucas Doucette. Their second tally was earned late in the half, in the 42nd minute. In the second half, Drew notched their third in the 61st minute. Down three late in the game, all was not lost for the Violets when senior midfielder Bryan Walsh got them on the board in the 90th minute. The goal may not have won them the game, but it sent the Violets off on a high note. Doucette reflected back on the game as a punctuation mark to the end of not just a season, but his collegiate career.

“We came out and dominated for the first 15 minutes, but after they got a soft goal, the momentum shifted, and they started outplaying us and out-hustling us,” Doucette said. “We never really threatened after that. Tough end to a great season. It is also sad saying goodbye to the program after four great years.”

Walsh also added in remarks on his soccer journey.

“I wasn’t ready to give up this game four years ago, and I’m not ready to give it up now,” Walsh said.

“It was a tough ending to a season full of progress, but this group of guys is something special, and they now have the foundation to take this program where it has never been before.”

The women enjoyed a more successful weekend, beginning with a 3-2 overtime win against the Ospreys. The opening goal came unassisted from freshman forward Alex Benedict in the seventh minute. The game became a defensive battle until well into the second half when Stockton opened play up and netted a goal in the 60th minute to tie the game at one. Both teams traded second goals, with NYU earning theirs from sophomore forward Meredith Hackerson in the 82nd minute, and the Ospreys getting one back almost immediately in the 85th.

At a 2-2 impasse, sophomore midfielder and defender Maddie Pena alleviated the tension and secured the Violets the win in the first minute of overtime.

On Sunday, the women were dominant against WPU, shutting out the Pioneers 2-0. Freshman defender Maddie Howard scored first in the third minute. Benedict got the insurance goal to secure the shutout win for senior goalkeeper Cassie Steinberg.

After this weekend’s successful quarterfinal round, the women’s season will try to stay alive in the semis on Saturday, Nov. 19.

A Battle on the Field and in the Mind

Anxiety is now the number one psychological issue being faced by college-age adults, with over 40 percent suffering from at least a mild case, according to the American Psychological Association. One group in particular might be more susceptible to this disorder than the average college student: the student athlete.

“With today’s athletes, there’s so much pressure to do well.

College sports has become its own business,” NYU athletic trainer Roy Flores said. Flores acknowledged anxiety to be one of the most prevalent unspoken problems in athletics across the country. “Athletes have to perform, but they also have to please.”

“My anxiety is a compilation of doubts that I have accumulated throughout my past experiences.

Whether it’s an old coach, team-

mates, or even myself, when I mess up there’s a voice in my head whispering ‘Why are you so bad at this?’” sophomore women’s volleyball player Gretchen Cash said. “Sometimes it helps me play better, but it can also lead to a complete collapse. It’s either a plus or a minus, never in-between.”

“Athletes have a lot more room for overthinking,” Flores said.

“Students come to me all of the time complaining of too much stress or anxiety, and all I can tell them is focus on living in the moment.”

Flores commented that students in team sports tend to have worse symptoms than those in individualized sports. “More people are counting on them to perform,” he said.

“Soccer has brought out a lot of stress that I wouldn’t have known otherwise,” senior women’s soccer player Julie Glover said. “During season, the emo-

tions I feel the most are being tired and stressed.”

Glover praised soccer for bringing her some of her closest friends, but said she couldn’t ignore the opportunities that it caused her and others on her team to miss.

“A lot of the stress comes from not being able to do the same things that other students are doing,” Glover continued. “Especially as a senior, the working world is competitive and some athletes have to put their careers on hold during their seasons.”

Flores agreed with Glover’s sentiment, offering similar observations.

“A lot of students feel like they have two full-time jobs,” Flores said. “When athletes come into college as freshmen, a lot of them say they feel as if they are drowning under everything.”

The average day for an athlete in season begins around 8 a.m. and doesn’t end until all of their

work is done.

“It was my choice to play volleyball in college, but I go to a school where the majority doesn’t understand the amount of work it takes to be on a team,”

Cash said. “Being a student-athlete is an uphill battle against both yourself and others.”

The fall sports schedule is almost wrapped up for NYU, with the volleyball team falling in ECAC play and cross country down to its final week. Fencing got rescheduled; meanwhile, the wrestling team put on an impressive show over the weekend, setting them up nicely for a strong season.

Though the season is over, the Violets are likely to come back stronger next year. With no seniors currently on the roster, their experience and development as a team are likely to grow further in 2017.

Volleyball Missing out on NCAA tourna-

ment, the NYU women’s volleyball instead made a strong run in the ECAC tournament, winning its second-round matchup against Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Saturday in straight sets before falling in the semifinals to Swarthmore College in four sets Sunday.

The Violets started the weekend with thorough victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. The Violets controlled the action throughout, winning each set by nine points (25-16, 25-11, 25-15). The team controlled virtually all major statistics, including kills (28-23), aces (18-1) and digs (4335). Junior middle blocker Rayne Ellis and sophomore middle blocker Gretchen Cash finished with eight kills apiece, and sophomore setter Kathryn Goyette notched 22 assists.

The NYU cross country squad returned to Glassboro, New Jersey on Saturday to compete in the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship. The men once again impressed, placing fourth of 44 teams, while the women finished 18th. Senior Jorge Maldonado was the Violets’ top performer, finishing the 8k race in 10th with a time of 24.49.2. Junior Neil Saddler finished second in line for the team, placing 30th in 25.10.8. Juniors Karn Setya and Max Mudd battled it out, with Setya finishing seven-tenths of a second ahead of Mudd.

Senior Justine Morris’ time of 22:54.1 paced the women’s side in the 6k race, while junior Emily Dethlefs finished five seconds behind her, placing 85th. Junior Laura Dorsky finished the race with a time of 23:04, and fellow third-year runner Megan Davis took 23:13 to cross the finish line.

The cross country comes to an end next week, as some Violets travel to Louisville, Kentucky for the NCAA Cross Country Championship.

After a tight 22-14 win against Wilkes, the Grapplers were even more convincing, winning by margins of 19, 31 and 34 in their next three matches. The squad was comprised of a trio of freshmen, led by Jack La Corte’s four wins at 197 pounds. Meanwhile, Evan Drill went 3-0 at 141, and Sam Schwartzapfel notched three wins at 165 pounds.

The Grapplers return to the mat this Sunday at the NYS Collegiate Championships at Cornell University in Ithaca.
