Administration, Student Groups Combat Drug Use

It’s no secret that drug use is prevalent on college campuses across the country, but many overlook that it can also happen close to home.

According to the Addiction Center, college students are twice as likely to abuse drugs and alcohol compared to young people who do not attend college. Drug use is prevalent in colleges all over the United States, and NYU is no exception.

NYU currently has strict policies prohibiting drug use and abuse on campus.

“NYU follows state and federal law as closely as they can [in] on-campus housing,” said Steinhardt senior Alex Lekhtman, who is the president of Students for Sensible Drug Policy. “They don’t tolerate possession of any controlled substances or the sale of controlled substances, and obviously they don’t tolerate underage drinking.”

Even with these policies in place, students still report blatant drug use among their peers. Liberal Studies freshman Stella Ahn said she often sees students smoking marijuana in her building.

“They smoke in certain floors of the hall and inside the building,” Ahn said. “They would just be standing outside in groups of two to sometimes up to seven people.”

Lekhtman said that NYU students use drugs for a number of different reasons.

“People use drugs for social events, parties or concerts, or when hanging out with friends,” Lekhtman said. “People use drugs that stimulate them to help them study or for help with academic affairs. People also use drugs to treat different mental illnesses.”

Drug use comes with the dangers of addiction and overdose, which with certain drugs can have adverse health, behavioral and social consequences. Students, faculty and administrators are taking steps to reduce the harm caused by substance abuse and help students make informed choices about the use of substances.

SSDP, an international grassroots organization, advocates for drug policy reform on a state and federal level. However, NYU’s SSDP also tries to make an impact on a smaller scale.

“Our two main goals are to educate people about drug policy and

drugs and to encourage students to get involved in their communities, whether that’s here on campus or in their cities,” Lekhtman said.

Last semester, SSDP invited a harm reduction expert from the Addiction Center in Brooklyn, and conducted Narcan training for NYU students. NYU students were given Narcan kits and trained to administer the drug, which can help reverse the effects of a heroin overdose. Lekhtman said that the training was a success, and the SSDP wants to turn the workshop into a tradition.

SSDP has also helped to educate NYU students about drug use in general.

“We did several meetings where we educated students about all different kinds of drug use,” Lekhtman said. “We talked about safety protocol and what drugs don’t mix well with other drugs, how to reduce unwanted side effects or other harms.

We also talked a little bit about the legality of the drugs and where things currently stand as far as policy is concerned.”

NYU’s policy regarding the use of drugs and alcohol aims to ensure students’ safety. For example, NYU’s “Good Samaritan” policy states that

NYU Still Not Sanctuary Campus

Shortly after Donald Trump was elected to the presidency last November, NYU students staged a walkout in Washington Square Park, advocating that the university become a sanctuary campus for undocumented students. And if you read the email from President Andrew Hamilton shortly thereafter, you might have thought the effort was successful.

However, to the chagrin of students and faculty alike, the school was never officially declared a sanctuary campus — and the university has no plans to make it happen anytime soon.

Now, NYU Sanctuary, a new campus advocacy group consisting of students and faculty, has published an open letter urging Hamilton to make NYU a sanctuary campus.

“This declaration of sanctuary would affirm NYU’s commitment to uphold the key values of the university at all levels and sites of the NYU community by working actively and dedicating resources to the protection of its students, staff, workers and faculty,” the letter said.

The movement comes shortly after an executive order signed by President Trump on Jan. 27, which barred people from seven Middle Eastern countries from coming to the United States, showing the president’s willingness to act out against immigrants in the United States.

Without reading Hamilton’s letter closely, it seemed as though he conceded to students’ demands. Among other clarifications, His letter assured students and faculty that federal officials would not be allowed on campus to gather information about immigrants members in the NYU community without a legal order, and schol-

arship assistance to non-U.S. citizens would continue regardless of to immigration policies changes.

Hamilton sent another email to the community yesterday stating that the university would safeguard those persecuted by Trump’s new immigration policies. NYU Sanctuary, however, feels that Hamilton’s words are purposefully vague, adding that if NYU is to be a sanctuary campus, he must explicitly say so.

“There is a misconception because Hamilton’s November 2016 letter — which he refers to again in his email sent out today — is strategically tricky,” the students of the group said in a statement. “For example, while he does write about supporting DACA and our undocumented students, he leans on language from existing policies and the notion that New York City is already a sanctuary. Yet, if NYU is a ‘global university’ with many campuses, we can’t just lean on one city as sanctuary.”

The university maintains that its first priority is the well-being of its community members but did not elaborate about NYU’s status as a sanctuary campus.

“We have written to those members of the NYU community who might be subject to the order to let them know the University supports them, to highlight the risk they would be taking if they choose to travel outside the United States and to tell them that we have arranged special informational sessions for them with Law School faculty who specialize in immigration and administrators from our global programs,” NYU spokesperson John Beckman said.

Despite the university’s statements, NYU Sanctuary is still not satisfied with its stance on protection for immigrant students and faculty members.

students who report the drug abuse or overdose of another student will not necessarily face the consequences of using or being in the presence of drugs and/or alcohol.

This encourages students to seek medical attention for peers when necessary. However, the policy does not guarantee immunity for those who report emergencies.

The school offers counseling services for students who have questions or concerns regarding alcohol or drug use. Zoe Ragouzeos, the Assistant Vice President of Student Mental Health and Executive Director of Counseling and Wellness Services, said that NYU’s counselors will be helpful and considerate when faced with students with drug problems.

“Counseling and Wellness Services does not preach abstinence from substances but rather wants to assist students in examining their own behaviors and relationship with substances so they can make the best decision for themselves if they choose to use substances,” Ragouzeos said. “We offer free, non-judgmental and confidential assistance to NYU students who have questions or concerns related to their use of alcohol or other drugs through a

range of services.”

She said that when it comes to school policy on drug and alcohol use, students’ well-being comes first.

“The conduct policy at NYU related to drugs and alcohol is wellness-based in that, wherever possible, we wish to see policy violations as opportunities for students to examine their behaviors and the impact they have on their health.”

“Without the declaration of sanctuary, NYU does not have to commit to extending further policies, actions and resources that will protect students, staff, faculty and other members of the NYU community as the Trump administration inevitably tacks on more racist and xenophobic policies,” the group said in its statement.

While the group acknowledged that NYU is making positive strides towards safeguarding against Trump’s potentially dangerous immigration policies, it wants the university’s leadership to make the final, official step to guarantee protection for immigrants.

“Declaring Sanctuary status would make more concrete our commitment to keeping NYU an open university to the world and would send an important symbolic message of support to our students, staff and community members,” NYU Sanctuary’s letter said.

The NYU Department of Public Safety received seven reports of larceny, one report of controlled substance, one report of forcible fondling, one report of simple assault and three reports of criminal mischief between Jan. 20-27.

Larceny

On Jan. 20 at 3:50 p.m., a student reported that his wallet was missing from a clinic cubicle in the Dental Center. Police notification was declined.

On Jan. 24 at 11:30 p.m., a student reported that two of his textbooks were missing from a study lounge in Carlyle Court Residence Hall. The report is under investigation.

On Jan. 25 at 12:44 p.m., a student in Tisch Hall reported that his headphones were missing from his desk after class. The case is still open and under investigation.

On Jan. 25 at 1:23 p.m., a student reported that his jacket was missing from a classroom in NYU Tandon’s Rogers Hall. Police notification was declined.

On Jan. 25 at 1:45 p.m., a student at the Dental Center reported that her laptop was missing from a study lounge area.

On Jan. 25 at 8:25 p.m., a student at the Dental Center reported that her belongings were missing from a locker room. Police notification was declined.

On Jan. 26 at 11:55 p.m., Public Safety responded to a report of a substance in Founders Residence Hall and recovered a small amount of marijuana.

Forcible Fondling

On Jan. 27 at 12:50 a.m. in Brittany Residence Hall, a student reported that they were forcibly fondled by another NYU student. This case is still under investigation.

Simple Assault

On Jan. 27 at 12:50 a.m., Public Safety reported that a Public Safety Officer was assaulted by a student at Brittany Residence Hall. A police report was filed.

Criminal Mischief

On Jan. 22 at 9:30 p.m., Public Safety reported graffiti painted on an entrance door of NYU Tandon’s Rogers Hall. The report is under investigation.

On Jan. 24 at 7:11 a.m., Public Safety reported graffiti painted on an emergency exit door at 19 University Pl. The report is under investigation.

On Jan. 25 at 6:32 a.m., Public Safety reported that an unknown male kicked a bucket into the front door of the NYU Senior House which caused the door to crack. A police report was filed.

Students Read Between the Lines of NYUSH Textbook Policies

NYU Shanghai implements a unique textbook policy, restricting how students buy textbooks. NYUSH’s Student Council has grappled with the administration over altering the policies, but the administration says legal barriers prevent reform.

The official policy requires students to either order the e-textbook from NYUSH’s textbook website or legally purchase a physical copy and verify it with the university.

“If the website shows that the textbook is required in physical hardcopy format, you must order it through the NYU Shanghai Textbooks Website,” the policy reads. “No verification of substitutions will be allowed (except the Chinese Books).”

This policy prevents students from purchasing textbooks illegally or pirating the books online. NYUSH predominantly uses e-textbooks, and a number of students, who prefer physical copies, illegally print textbooks.

NYUSH junior Nofar Hamrany has voiced his concerns to the student leadership platform for three years. Hamrany said that

acquiring textbooks, according to campus’ policies, has caused financial concerns for students.

The policy states, “NYU Shanghai charges each student $500 by the Bursar for course materials before the academic semester started but students might receive refund based on the actual costs.”

Hamrany said that NYUSH has since removed this flat $500 fee and replaced it with a verification policy, which students also oppose because it only applies to NYUSH — other American universities in Shanghai are more flexible with their textbook policies. Verification requires students to buy university-approved books and then confirm their legal acquisition.

If this process is not completed, the university purchases the book on the student’s behalf.

Hamrany also said that the legal issues the university cites should be questioned, because they serve the university more than its students.

“If I as a student buy an illegal book, it has nothing to do with the school,” Hamrany said.

Hamrany believes NYUSH is worried about how it is perceived in the United States.

The economic repercussions should not

affect students.

But John Robertson, Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs, said that many constraints prevent the university from loosening its policies.

Two major roadblocks include NYUSH lacking the license to be a textbook vendor and the university being under government scrutiny.

“One of the reasons that we have to do what we do is that unlike New York — where there are so many different options for students to get books and the university acts as almost a bystander to the process — we have reputational risk involved if we removed ourselves from the process and told students to get books on their own,” Robertson said.

Robertson said that the university does not want to violate United States copyright laws, since publishers hold the university liable if students are caught illegally accessing textbooks.

“There are stories in the New York Times and papers like [Washington Square News] who look at the labor practices in China and how NYUSH relates to that,” Robertson said. “We just want to make sure that if someone in New York or at The

New York Times decides they want to write an article about NYUSH and its relationship to U.S. copyright law that we are actually following that copyright law.”

NYUSH sophomore Hobin Kim, Vice President of NYUSH’s Student Government, said that while things have definitely improved during his time dealing with textbook policy issues, students will never be completely satisfied. Yet, while some students are upset with the policies, Kim does not think this is a unanimous sentiment.

“It’s one of those things where students just complain, even though the admin is trying a lot to improve the quality of life in our school,” Kim said.

“For some people, they just whine about it, but for some people, they just don’t care.”

Kim said that he believes there is rationale within the current system and that two main issues prevent NYUSH from becoming a legal book vendor: the lack of space for a bookstore and the aforementioned licensing issue. When he explains this to other students, he said that they are mostly able to empathize with the administration. However, he also thinks this understand-

“NYUSH is the first jointly established university by America and China, so we are very careful in this situation — we’re not really sure if we’re going to be existing in 10 or 20 years, because the Chinese government is looking at us,” Kim said.

Protest Responds to JFK Detainees in Battery Park

After 17 people were detained without charges this morning in John F. Kennedy Airport, protesters and elected officials gathered in Battery Park to speak against President Donald Trump’s executive orders banning immigrants from seven Muslim majority countries and halting the entry of refugees into the country.

The New York Immigration Coalition, Make the Road New York, the National Immigration Law Center and several other New York-based organizations

coordinated the rally, and over 10,000 supporters attended a march to the Offices of Customs and Border Control by City Hall, voicing distress for the many immigrants, Muslims and refugees targeted by Trump’s recent executive order.

The public officials, activists and organization representatives that addressed the crowd spoke in a mix of both Spanish and English. Among the speakers were New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, New York Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, Mayor Bill de Blasio, activist Linda Sar-

sour and U.S. Representative Jerrold Nadler. Many elected officials were also present at the rally in Washington Square Park on Wednesday, which promoted a similar message of open borders with the hashtag #NoBanNoWall.

Protesters chanted “no hate, no fear, Muslims are welcome here” and “aqui estamos y no nos vamos” before New York Senator Chuck Schumer took to the stage. Addressing the crowd, Schumer said that the protests in JFK contributed to the fight against Trump’s recent executive orders regarding immigration.

“Because of your actions, he [Secretary John F. Kelly] promised me that the 42 who are detained and under court order to be released, will be released to the United States and to freedom shortly,” Schumer said during his speech. “So we’ve made progress for 42 — we have to make progress for thousands and tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands more.”

Among those detained at JFK was NYU Ph.D. student Narges Bayani, who studies in the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World. Bayani was initially detained on Saturday while trying to enter the country but has since been released.

NYU Spokesperson John Beckman said that NYU’s primary concern is the welfare of the students, faculty, researchers and employees affected by Friday’s immigration order. Beckman said that the university has reached out to those who may be subject to the order to provide support.

“One NYU student was detained at the airport in New York; we are very glad to report that she was permitted to enter the country Sunday morning, thanks to the intervention of our Law School’s Immigrant Rights Clinic,” Beckman said.

“NYU is also very grateful to Senator Chuck Schumer, Senator Kristen Gillibrand and Congressman Jerrold Nadler, who also intervened on the stu-

dent’s behalf at the request of the university.”

Beckman also said that the university is prepared to support students in any future incidents — the Immigrants Rights Clinic will announce shortly that it has developed a special program to assist members of the NYU community who are at risk of being deported. He said the university is working with the law firm WilmerHale to deal with additional situations as they arise on a case-by-case basis.

CAS freshman Claudia Franke attended the protest and said that the message of Sunday’s rally particularly resonated with her, since she has family members living in the U.S. with green cards. She attended to show solidarity with her family and friends, which for her is a form of therapy.

“My mom is from Turkey, and while Trump may be friends with Erdogan for now, his actions in the past week have shown his administration to be irrational and capable of violating the Constitution,” Franke said. “It’s comforting to be around people who feel the same way you do and share the same fears, and I was empowered by the diversity of today’s crowd — especially compared to the makeup at last week’s Women’s March.”

Nominated for an Oscar, Banned from Ceremony

The revenge tale is one of the film industry’s favorite tropes. It is the key plot device in films such as “Oldboy” and “Kill Bill.” Both films follow a similar format, yet differ in the trope’s structure and execution. A revenge story remains essentially the same in each iteration: someone violently enters the protagonist’s life, leads them to take drastic steps to find the culprit and exacts revenge upon them, while also trying to intellectually comprehend what led to the traumatic action in the first place.

These films usually begin and end with gratuitous acts of violence, almost as a form of catharsis stemming from the realization of the main character’s mission. But Asghar Farhadi’s “The Salesman” veers quite dramatically from the traditional structure of the revenge film. Farhadi’s brutally muted, almost casually devastating portrait of a marriage fractured by a violent home intrusion is a frighteningly suspenseful and surprisingly unhinged portrayal of revenge. The shocking contrast stems from the restraint expressed by the characters, complemented masterfully by Farhadi’s direction.

“The Salesman” centers around the relationship between Emad (Shahab Hosseini) and Rana Etesami (Taraneh Alidoosti), a married couple who recently lost their apartment due to structural damage. Emad and Rana both work as actors, starring as Willy and Linda Loman in a revival of Arthur Miller’s classic play “Death of a Salesman.” A fellow actor, Babak (Babak Karimi), introduces them to an apartment up for rent because the tenant could no longer afford to live there. Emad and Rana eagerly move in, creating a pragmatic realism for the first 45 minutes of the film that provides a perfect foundation for the near-surrealism of the second half.

One day, Emad remains at the theater while Rana returns home. A man breaks in and assaults her, mistaking her for the sex worker that used to live there. The directing in this moment is spare and unrelenting. Hosseini and Alidoosti wear their corporeal grief on their faces like a weight, more affecting than any scene of violence could possibly be.

The ensuing events center on the suffocating strain that trauma can cause in a relationship. The assailant leaves a few of his belongings behind, leaving Emad desperate to do anything he can to track the attacker down. When he is unable to, Rana asks him to stop looking and instead to help her recover from her trauma. He responds with frustration and anger.

Emad, subconsciously co-opting his wife’s trauma as his own, is painfully human. He believes he is looking for justice for Rana, but finding the identity of the attacker can really only satisfy him.

The film ends in a nauseatingly uncomfortable fashion — a near hour-long exchange that, if revealed here in more detail, would be greatly cheapened. What can be said is that what Farhadi does with the moment would usually be dismissed as impossible: he makes each party’s actions taken and words absolutely vital to the scene. Not only that, he vitalizes those things that remain unsaid. The expression and the repression are equal, essentially leaving the viewer at a moral and ethical crossroads.

“The Salesman” is nominated for Best Foreign Language film at the Oscars this year. Unfortunately, due to the noxious geopolitical climate ushered in by Donald Trump’s rise to the U.S. presidency, Farhadi himself — an Iranian citizen — will be missing from the awards show.

Originally, he would not have been allowed to attend under Trump’s executive order banning U.S. entry for nationals from seven different Middle Eastern countries. Now that the ban has been

The Salesman opened in New York on Friday, Jan. 27. blocked (at least temporarily), Farhadi himself has announced that he has canceled his plans to attend the ceremony, in condemnation of the executive order and the unjust, prejudicial environment it has created.

Since the film is a strong contender to win its category, Farhadi’s absence will be glaring. But it won’t just be obvious from an administrative standpoint; it is symbolically significant as well. Farhadi’s protest represents the stark, unforgiving worldview and vision that Trump has for the United States. Trump envisions a country where people like Farhadi have no place and are categorically excluded due to their ethnicity, religious denomination or skin color.

Trump has villainized an entire group of people in reaction to the threat of terrorism abroad — a threat that the vast majority of Muslims and refugees from impoverished, war-torn countries don’t pose to the United States. These people, who Trump seeks to alienate and antagonize, seek refuge from the turbulent circumstances surrounding their own countries. For example, many Syrian citizens cannot justify remaining under the

autocratic, brutally violent governance of Bashar al-Assad.

And yet Donald Trump does not care about the trials and tribulations of these people. This is because these struggles, portrayed by visionary artists like Farhadi with “The Salesman,” do not exist within Trump’s vision for the United States. Through the ostensibly dire circumstances surrounding the ascendance of Trump, Farhadi’s mission to elucidate a new cultural connection is even nobler than it would have been before.

Now more than ever, international storytelling must be at the forefront of popular culture. Bowing to threats of silence by a fledgling autocratic ruler would insult the painstaking work of individuals like Farhadi — individuals who risk being accused of insurrection within their own countries and now also in the United States. Farhadi will be absent from the Academy Awards this year. The American movie-going public should be conscious of his absence and its symbolism in a broader context.

NYU Alumni Mock Entertainment Industry in “555”

By NATALIE WHALEN Entertainment Editor The chemistry between Tisch alumni John Early and Kate Berlant is unmistakable. The pair are frequent collaborators, and their newest project, the Vimeo Original series “555,” pushes the

boundaries of absurdist humor showcasing Early and Berlant’s talents both as individual performers and a comedy duo.

Watch out for these talents in the coming months, as they are definitely forces to be reckoned with.

past couple years, the actors have slowly established themselves within the entertainment industry. Early, who earned his undergraduate degree at NYU’s Atlantic Acting Studio, had a starring role in TBS’ “Search Party,” a secondary role in Netflix’s series “The Characters” and was featured in the 2016 Sundance Festival favorite “Other People.” Berlant completed her MFA on women in comedy and has appeared in Comedy Central’s “The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail” as well as in “The Characters.”

“555” does not beat around the bush.

From its first episode, the series establishes Early and Berlant as comedians who are unafraid to show what they think is funny — and this fearlessness works. Each of the five episodes, all approximately 12 minutes long, feature the actors in various situations and relationships with another. In the first episode, Early is a star on the rise who has stolen paraplegic Berlant’s failed pop song. In another episode, Berlant is the over-the-top mother to the illiterate child actor Early.

All of the episodes seem to poke fun at the entertainment industry — or those

desperately trying to make it. Given Early and Berlant’s recent success, but not yet superstardom, it makes sense that the two would make this series at this time.

They’re past the early period of desperation for exposure, but are not too far removed from the world of talented (or not-as-talented) individuals just trying to make it.

At the same time, the series seems like the type of show that might catch the eye of a producer at SNL, signaling that Early and Berlant may not be so far removed from the hustle. But it is this self-reflective and layered humor that makes the show so great, and it is clear that both John and Kate are aware that they are, more than anything, making fun of themselves.

In conjunction with the series’ premiere, Early and Berlant will perform a stand-up tour, along with a mini-residency at Joe’s Pub in New York City, where they will also screen episodes of the show.

Bright Lights and High Notes at NYU

Amid classes, internships and extracurriculars, there is not always time for students to appreciate the vast amount of talent on NYU’s campus. It is only on rare occasions that musical theater enthusiasts from every class and program are able to unite for the sheer enjoyment of performance. Broadway Night at Kimmel, an NYU Spring Welcome Week event held on Thursday, was one of those events.

Broadway Night was an evening of impromptu cabaret performances featuring renditions of everyone’s favorite showtunes. The event followed the usual open mic structure, with the bravest performers signing up early and fellow risk-takers finding their courage as the evening went on. The show opener was Tisch sophomore Sarah Musicant, who performed the heartfelt Disney ballad “A Change in Me” from “Beauty and the Beast.” Then came the classic “Waitress” piece “When He Sees Me,” emphatically performed by Tisch freshman Tiana Jung. Other spotlight moments from the evening included Tisch sophomore Brian Densey’s renditions of “Run Away With Me” from the lovable Kerrigan and Lowdermilk musical “The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown” and “Made of Stone” from “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

Tisch students didn’t steal the entire show, however — CAS sophomore Morghan Brown’s powerhouse performances of “I’m Here” from “The Color Purple” and “A Summer in Ohio” from the Jason Robert Brown musical “The Last Five Years” brought fervent ap-

plause. Other surprises from the evening included Stern freshman Aida Franco’s soulful renditions of “Gimme Gimme” from “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and the classic “On My Own” from “Les Miserables.”

Stern senior Shawn Thibault inspired the audience with his version of “Wavin’ Through A Window” from the musical “Dear Evan Hansen.” The night also featured duets of the “Little Shop of Horrors” hit “Skid Row” and “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin.” There was even a spot-on lip sync interpretation of the “Hamilton” power track “Satisfied.”

Many of the attendees, such as CAS junior Maddie Kestenbaum — who was also the night’s emcee — were impressed with the performances.

“I think it was really amazing,” said CAS junior Maddie Kestenbaum. “With the people who signed up to perform early on and then people just volunteering to go, it ended up being really fun.”

Like any musical theater gathering, the event concluded with mass sing-alongs of essential hits “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from the musical “Hairspray” and “We’re All in This Together” from “High School Musical.” The evening’s biggest flaw was easily the lack of songs from the score of Johnathan Larson’s “Rent.” It was a night of shared interest in great music, theater cliches and all that jazz. Broadway Night gave NYU students a much needed opportunity to experience and appreciate all the talent NYU has to offer. Hopefully, those in attendance left with newfound love for NYU’s performers and productions.

Migos, a rap trio from Atlanta, taught NYU students a class about their rise in fame and pop culture.

Migos Teaches What Culture Means

This Saturday, Atlanta rap trio Migos — consisting of members Quavo, Takeoff and Offset — did NYU students the honor of teaching a Culture Class. They are ffresh off of the hyper-successful release of their sophomore album “Culture,” and their single “Bad and Boujee” has been topping Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop and Hot 100 charts for weeks. Migos are three of the hottest rappers in the game right now. They visited NYU to talk about how they gained their popularity, their future plans and how they define culture in 2017.

What Migos dubbed the “Migos flow” has become dominant in pop culture. Between the popularization of dabbing, Donald Glover giving them a shout-out at the Golden Globes and the appearance of “Bad and Boujee” lyrics in popular memes, Migos’ swelling status in pop culture continues to grow. The trio is undeniably cool, and in person they do not disappoint. At one point, both Quavo and Takeoff — Offset was not present — pulled huge wads of cash out of their pockets. They even made matching wire-framed glasses look impossibly suave.

The rappers are confident without being annoying and funny without being juvenile. The class was more like a four-part interview broken into sections about fashion, pop culture, music and a Q&A session. While it may not have been very informational, the class was extremely entertaining and provided an intimate look into the creative processes of these artists who are becoming incredibly famous.

The program’s fashion section was headed by VFILES founder

Julie Ann Quay. As Quay asked questions about Migos’ style inspirations, it became immediately apparent that they are their own source of inspiration.

Migos’ members dress the way they want to, and the rest of the world follows suit. Quay mentioned how during the VFILES runway show, they refused to wear the outfits that had been selected for them and ended up going down the runway in whatever they wanted. This independence is what makes Migos so popular — they unabashedly do their own thing.

Comedian and graphic artist Zack Fox led the section on pop culture, which turned into more of a joking conversation between the two rappers and Fox. They talked about “Mortal Kombat,” “BET Uncut,” which movie they would bring if they were stranded on an island and how they would like to meet Former President Barack Obama and “break some rules with him.”

Fox asked the rappers whether they could make a song out of anything. The pair immediately responded yes and used the example of a Febreze bottle Fox gave them to actually freestyle a couple of lines. Even though Migos has a massive influence on pop culture, the way its members speak about themselves demonstrates that their fame influences them just as much as it does their fans. They are making their image genuine rather than intentionally influential; they are both icons and followers.

The music portion of the class, led by Naomi Zeichner, the editor-in-chief of Fader Magazine, revealed the trio’s deep roots and dedication to making original music. Offset, Quavo and Takeoff grew up together, and they are as close as family.

This sentimentality came across

clearly when Quavo and Takeoff laughed about the subpar quality of Quavo’s first mixtape and the days when they taught themselves how to record. Although they now have a team, they still actively participate in the recording process. “Nobody is going to care about your stuff the way you do,” said Quavo, who also takes part in directing all of Migos’ music videos.

They discussed their creative process, which doesn’t include songwriting. Instead, they individually record a verse and then build off of each other to create a cohesive sound. Their close involvement in the creative process comes across in the joyful nature of their music. They have fun creating their songs and want their fans to have fun listening to them. “We love the appreciation,” said Quavo. “It makes me feel good when everyone else is feeling good.”

Clive Davis junior Michelle Kim led the student Q&A portion. Many of the questions pertained to the politics of being Migos, and their opinions on representing black culture and having that culture appropriated. Takeoff expressed frustration with people who don’t take rappers seriously or respect their artistry.

Most notably, one student asked what Migos plans to do to in the next four years to combat racial tensions. They first said that they wanted to make sure thier platform was strong enough before confronting this issue. However, the student pushed them on the question, and Quavo conceded that with the platform they had, it was time to do something. “We are the future,” he said.

Start Where It Counts Although it would be nice to start the semester with a perfectly organized closet, beginning your spring cleaning with your school stuff will have the greatest impact on your life. Set yourself up for academic success by copying important dates from your new syllabi into a planner or your phone’s calendar. Better yet, create a spreadsheet of your assignments for the semester to ensure that you don’t forget any. After you’ve pored through your syllabi, find a binder to keep track of them, as well as any other important documents for your classes. These steps will not only keep your space clutter free, but will liven up your decor. If you take the time upfront to organize the objects that

normally clutter your space, it will make cleaning up much easier down the road. Go big or go home, right?

Don’t Give Up When homework starts to pile up, resist the temptation to also allow junk to pile up in the corner. A messy space will only add to your clutter. Before you get too busy, set aside a time every week to complete household chores such as tidying up the living room, doing laundry and changing your sheets.

Soon, these tasks will become a habit. By exam season, you’ll be glad of your tidy room and a mindless activity to keep your mind off the papers you need to write.

There’s something magical about walking into Pasta Wiz. The walls are full of medieval-looking artifacts, old books, mysterious bottles and even an actual broomstick straight from Harry Potter.

The decor comes from coowner Alex Dimitrov, who adores the wizarding aesthetic.

The restaurant chose to run with a wizarding theme – even its name has the word “Wiz” in it. On the menu, you can order various “potions” or drinks with

names such as “The Dark Lord.”

Earlier this month, Gothamist writer Nell Casey visited the restaurant and wrote an article describing the restaurant as Harry Potter-themed, but co-owner Mike Awad strongly disagrees. Pasta Wiz’s intention is to serve pasta Chipotle-style — fast and personal — and to offer customers a friendly and comfortable environment.

While the establishment has elements that make it seem like a building from Harry Potter, the wizarding theme is merely a display of one of the owner’s passions.

According to Awad, the Harry Potter description has actually caused a lot of problems for the restaurant. After it was published, customers focused more on the theme rather than the food. Given the amount of effort and care that goes into the food at Pasta Wiz, Awad’s frustration at the food being overshadowed by the theme is understandable. However, he shouldn’t worry, because the pasta is utterly phenomenal.

Customers have the option of creating their own pasta dish or

ordering from one of the restaurant’s menu options. Stern sophomore Tara Sorman ordered the Neptune Mix, which is radiatore pasta in spicy arrabiata with salmon and shrimp.

“The food was flavorful and well-cooked, and it was great to have it cooked right in front of you” said Sorman.

The wizarding-themed items on the menu, such as the “Immunity Potion,” an orange, lemon, grapefruit and ginger juice, and “Liquid Gold,” a mango and banana smoothie, were fresh and delicious.

Another draw for Pasta Wiz is its comfortable atmosphere. All the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and they have different seating options to match any taste. It’s a very open and relaxed establishment, but the people there clearly care about what they serve. Pasta Wiz is located on 60 N. First St. in Brooklyn, and is open from 11 a.m to 10 p.m every day. Extra long sleeves have emerged on the runways of recent fashion shows. Designers like Simone Rocha, Pucci, Vetements and even Louis Vuitton’s latest menswear line have presented models dressed in flowy sleeves that flutter beyond the fingertips. Here are some tips that could extend the look beyond the runway and into your daily fashion.

Drawing the Focus The sleeves are the statement. When wearing an extra long sleeved blouse or sweater, you can draw attention to the trendy top’s design by wearing leggings or other tight fitting or close cropped pants. The eye will be drawn to the sleeves’ unique length.

Let it Go Go for the artsy explorer look by allowing a blouse’s long sleeves to peek out beneath the sleeves of a trench coat. Pair it with high waisted pants to complete the look.

The same trick works with a cable-knit sweater, too.

The sweater doesn’t need to be tucked in; just let it hang loose.

Wear It With A Skirt Sleeves aren’t the only things that can flutter. By pairing a blouse with a skirt, you can achieve an effortless but elegant look. A short, fit-

Dress and Boots Instead of heels or ballet flats, pair an extra long sleeved, ankle length dress with boots. A once elegant dress can become an expression of both sophistication and care-free originality.

The Cookie Dough Shop on LaGuardia; It’s DOlicious

We all remember snacking on cookie dough as a kid, sneaking licks off baking spoons despite warnings of salmonella, because, let’s face it: cookie dough is always best before it enters the oven. Luckily, a new dessert shop opened this week that satisfies that craving without the danger. Just a two-minute walk from Washington Square Park, DO Cookie Dough Confections sells cookie dough that is completely risk-free, replacing typically unhealthy ingredients with completely safe alternatives.

While DO’s Greenwich Village location just opened this past Wednesday, many NYU students such as CAS freshman Izzy Vidal. were already familiar with the brand via social media.

“I’ve been following DO on In-

stagram for a while now,” VIdal said. “And when I heard that they were opening a store right by campus I had to give it a try.”

But would the coveted confection live up to the hype? The atmosphere of the shop is clean and colorful, although the limited space proved to be a slight issue when having to squeeze past other customers to get in line.

A highlight of the store’s layout was that customers could watch the bakers preparing the cookie dough through a large window peeking into the kitchen.

The extensive selection of flavors is sure to make you excited; you name it, DO’s got it. At only $4 for a generous scoop it was worth the money to get four flavors: signature chocolate chip, gimme s’more, vegan chocolate chip and cake batter, a seasonal flavor. How to Start the Semester Right

Beginning the semester with tasks like buying school supplies, finalizing your class schedule or searching for textbooks that don’t cost as much as a Hamilton ticket can be both mentally and emotionally taxing. After NYU’s long winter break, diving back into a full class load can seem daunting. However, a simple shift in perspective can help start the semester off with new energy and some excitement, and can ultimately help you do better in your classes.

Starting your semester off on the right could make or break your success. By starting positively, you can set the vibe for the entire semester. One strategy is to focus on organization — this means creating work and school schedules, cleaning up your desk space and maintaining a study schedule. By scheduling out your day, you can have a general outline of what you want to get done and an estimate of how long it will take you to do it.

Within this schedule, make sure to set time aside for studying and plan out when you are going to study each subject. According to French professor Melanie Hackney, regular study time is crucial to making the most of your education.

“Make learning the course material the primary objective,” Hackney said. “This may sound like obvious advice, but I see far too many students who get caught up in

These are definitely must-try flavors.

The other two flavors, however, did not quite deliver. The gimme s’mores flavor was scarcely mastered in pseudo-s’mores baking renditions. Although the dough

was tasty, the flavor was virtually non-existent. Similarly, the vegan chocolate chip flavor was dry and crumbly, which made it difficult to scoop out and did not mimic the consistency of conventional cookie dough – although vegan cookie dough’s consistency is always crumbly due to the absence of eggs in the recipe. In addition, the dough had a strange aftertaste that the classic flavors did not. Although it is not a bad vegan dessert, there are better options for vegans to satisfy their sweet tooth.

Although some flavors miss the mark, as a whole the shop succeeds in creating safe-to-eat cookie dough that tastes as delicious as it sounds. While sticking to the simple flavors and spooning right out of the container is the way to go for cookie dough purists, adventurous eaters can consume their flavor of choice

on top of ice cream, in milkshakes and more. All in all, dessert lovers and nostalgic foodies alike are likely to make DO their new obsession.

Planned Parenthood’s apparel gets straight to the point with T-shirts bearing “I Stand With Planned Parenthood”. All proceeds go back to Planned Parenthood, which needs monetary support after Trump’s executive order to defund it.

What started as a women’s club has turned into a movement for the Wing, which brags of members such Elaine Welteroth, editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue. Along with their groundbreaking modern women’s club near Gramercy Park, the Wing runs an online store that sells everything a modern feminist could want. They’ve got stationery, pins, keychains and apparel. Their “Girls Doing Whatever the Fuck They Want in 2017” key chain is a fan favorite.

For many professors, a good attitude is just as valuable in a student as natural talent. Rafael Chduran, Latin American Politics teaching assistant and politics Ph.D. student, admires admires a student’s strong work ethic the most.

“Perseverance is more important than intelligence,” Chduran said. “If you persevere since the start of the semester, and distribute responsibilities evenly throughout, you will not only be less anxious, but more free. And that freedom will allow you to be far more creative and enjoy the career you pick.”

Chduran and Hackney aren’t alone in emphasizing that academic achievement isn’t everything. Writing the Essay professor Taylor Black believes students shouldn’t be afraid to recognize that they may have too much on their plates. Writing The Essay is considered one of the toughest classes a student takes their freshman year, making it easy to become discouraged.

“Know your limits,” Black said. “Search for the edges of your personality, talent and style, and then confine yourself to this enclosed space. With limitation comes endless possibility”.

On January 21, millions of Americans across the country donned their feminist apparel and marched in protest of newly inaugurated President Donald Trump’s rhetoric and actions.

These national marches, known as “Sister Marches”, were inspired by the Women’s March on Washington. With nearly five million participants, these protests were the biggest to date in the United States and the resistance doesn’t stop there. Many feminists — women, men, people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community and others — banded together to express their opposition to all that the Trump administration represents, and wore clothing that advocates women’s rights while doing so.

Before you find yourself completely buried in assignments from your new classes, set aside some time in the next two weeks to ring in the Year of the Rooster.

Attend the Big Parade To experience the best that the Lunar New Year celebration offers, check out the Annual Lunar New Year Parade and Festival in Chinatown on Feb. 5. Starting at the intersection of Canal St. and Mott St., the celebration parades south with traditional dragon dances, elaborate floats and vendors selling a wide array of Chinese dishes. The festival officially begins at noon, but get there early to secure a good spot for the 1 p.m. parade kick off.

Get a Crash Course in Chinese Culture at the Met The Metropolitan Museum’s Lunar New Year Festival is the perfect event for students who want to spend the holiday learning more about Chinese culture. Beginning at 11 a.m. and running until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, the festival features a Chinese opera performance, a hand-pulled noodle demonstration, paper folding and drawing stations, a tea gathering and numerous art galleries. Best of all, the festivities are free with a donation for admission to the museum.

Enjoy Music and Dance at Brookfield Place If the performing arts are more your style, don’t miss the Lunar New Year performance at Brookfield Place on Feb. 6. Hosted in conjunction with the New York Chinese Cultural Center, the performance will start with a lion parade at 1:30 p.m. and end with theatrical plays, a martial arts demonstration and music performances.

New Year, New Traditions

By KAITLYN WANG Co-Managing Editor It’s not Chinese New Year without dumplings and family, but for students who live far from home, the latter is not always possible. But that doesn’t stop students from seeking out traditional dishes — like porridge, mustard greens and citrus fruits — and even non-traditional dishes to celebrate the holiday.

For those lucky enough to visit home for this holiday, such as CAS freshman Lindsay Ngo, traditions were abound over the dinner table. Ngo is from New Jersey and spent the family meal with her grandmother in Flushing on Friday.

“We had dumplings, steamed fish, rice, soup and noodles,” said Ngo of her traditional meal. “The whole fish is supposed to signify a surplus, especially of wealth. Dumplings represent wealth as well, and noodles are supposed to mean longevity.”

CAS freshman Lucy Yu, who is from Long Island, also went home for the New Year celebrations.

“We make dumplings on Chinese New Year’s Eve every year,” Yu said.

“Tomorrow on New Year’s Day, we’re having hot pot. According to my parents, they always ate these foods when they were celebrating in China, so we’re doing it here too.”

CAS sophomore Shirley Yang also has dumplings every year because of their symbolism.

“I usually eat dumplings, because they represent the gold nugget shaped currency from the olden times,” Yang said.

Dumplings at the table mean that wealth will come in the upcoming year, and many families regard food symbolism as an integral part of Chinese New Year celebrations.

This high regard for symbolism culminates in dinner spreads filled with food like whole duck for fertility, spring rolls for wealth and cabbage for posterity. CAS freshman Connie Hu explained that when she was at home, there were specific foods she ate every year with her family.

“My mom usually cooks most of the food for Chinese New Year, including changshou mian (noodles) for longevity, bao zi fan (claypot rice), tofu, niangao (rice cake) for success [throughout] the year and dumplings for good fortune,” Hu said. “I didn’t eat all of that this year, but I still had New Year’s dinner with friends.”

Hu was one of many students who couldn’t make it home for Chinese New Year. Instead, she went to Flushing, Queens to have dinner with her friends and ordered food she might have found at home to celebrate: cold sesame noodles and pork dumplings.

But other students, like Yang, didn’t seek out traditional comfort for the holiday.

“I went out with my suitemates for dim sum today to celebrate,” Yang said. “I also eat rice cakes to represent the saying ‘nian nian gao sheng’ (rising higher every year) as well as turnip cake, tangyuan (rice ball soup), spring

rolls and a whole roasted chicken.”

Dim sum isn’t Chinese New Year tradition, but in New York City’s strong Chinese communities- in places like Lower Manhattan, Flushing and Brooklyn’s Sunset Park – dim sum restaurants aren’t hard to find.

Restaurants that serve the traditional fare usually enjoyed at home are easy to find as well.

Ngo visited the Chinatown in Manhattan on Saturday with friends to enjoy a bowl of noodles, but afterwards, she – like Yang – tried something new.

“We got Chinese New Year themed egg waffle sundaes from New Territories,” Ngo said.

While traditional foods remind many students of home, New York City’s many contemporary restaurants allow them to expand their palettes outside of customary symbolism while still enjoying the holiday. With the Chinese population increasing in the city, the bounds of tradition and cele-

bration are constantly expanding; it’s no wonder that students can find multiple ways to celebrate.

But even as food customs shift with students leaving home, there is one thing that is irreplaceable: family.

Yang – who’s from San Francisco – said that she was upset she kept missing Chinese New Year celebrations by one week.

“I’m so used to having big raucous family feasts and making food all day, playing with my baby nephews and knitting with both my grandmas,” Yang said. “It’s a lot lonelier on the family side of the celebrations.”

Freedom Of The Press Still Matters

By THOMAS PRICE Opinion Editor During President Donald Trump’s inauguration, six journalists were arrested and charged with felony rioting while covering the protests of the president.

While the arrests themselves are concerning based on the fact that the journalists were not an active part of the protests, but the precedent this sets is far more worrying. This is not okay or normal, and arresting journalists who are simply doing their jobs

is an unacceptable act that must be addressed.

While Trump’s relationship with the media has not been amicable, to charge journalists with a felony for reporting the news directly violates the First Amendment. It weakens the freedom of the press and expands upon the power of the government and politicians. The media represents the power to shine a light on the actions of those in charge.

And while there are some obvious flaws in popular media, it is an outlet for the truth at a time

when such an effort feels noble instead of simply logical. If those who hold power and authority over others cannot be held accountable for their actions, their supremacy increases. This suggests that the constitutional

rights that those who came before us fought and died for have lost their value. The protest the journalists were covering was news, and their efforts to break that news and cover it to the best of their ability was severely restricted — they were punished for doing their jobs. When the voices of those who represent the media are censored, we are taking a step in the wrong direction.

This article reaches a much smaller audience than The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal, but it represents the free-

dom that our country still holds dear. My voice, unrestricted, a product of the work by so many people before us. It is an example of a valuable liberty people enjoy on a daily basis. I have the rare privilege of being able to speak my mind and speak out against the powers that be if I see fit.

With that privilege also comes the responsibility to continue to honor those who need to exercise that right, now more than ever.

NYU’s (Non)Sanctuary Campus Status

By STUDENTS FOR NYU SANCTUARY CAMPUS Dear Editor, NYU President Andrew Hamilton’s November 2016 letter does not declare NYU a sanctuary campus. While his statements support DACA and our undocumented students, he leans on language from existing policies and the notion that New York City is already a sanctuary city.

Unfortunately, Hamilton’s letter, as it stands, is strategically tricky in a way that allows him to appease students while also appeasing other NYU stakeholders, like the Board of Trustees (some of whom, like John Paulson, have ties to Trump).

His vague wording has led to confusion regarding NYU’s status as a sanctuary campus, and media outlets such as Gothamist, Politico and Washington Square News have all published false information about President Hamilton declaring NYU

as a sanctuary campus. This information should be rectified.

In addition, Hamilton continues to use obfuscating language such as NYU having “diverse” stakeholders and that our university is “global” and “large”– that we are “practically committed” to sanctuary, but we are not. He has also mentioned that we have students and staff who support Trump and thus need to make sure we’re open to multiple stakeholders.

His letter creates a false sense of security, as members of the NYU community are made to believe we have sanctuary – we do not. The particular silence and omission of his letter in specifically declaring NYU a sanctuary campus has tremendous implications in our ability to protect, defend and fight for our communities.

Hamilton has currently made no commitment to deeming NYU a sanctuary campus. Without the explicit declaration of sanctuary, the university doesn’t have to be

Letter to the Editor accountable to any commitments or protections.

Designating NYU a “sanctuary campus” has both symbolic and legal significance, particularly in bolstering NYU’s policies in protecting our community and also playing a larger leadership role in opposing national immigration policies that deport and detain members of our community.

Explicit support and resources from administration are essential because of the networks and power the administration has access to. The livelihoods of our undocumented, Muslim and immigrant peers are being threatened everyday by the new presidential

administration. It’s now time for NYU to protect its people.

With the executive orders on immigration, the need for NYU to declare a sanctuary campus status is more critical than ever. NYU is home to undocumented students, migrant workers, international students, Muslim students and their families, whose lives are thrust into precarity on the heels of this decision and the threat of fulfillment of other promises Trump and his camp have made regarding deportation, detainment and the curtailing of immigrant rights.

Thus far, over 60 universities have declared sanctuary status, including Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers and CUNY. A formal declaration from NYU will have a substantive impact – it will help deter federal or other action that may heighten the vulnerability of those communities, while also helping to reassure prospective student, staff and faculty recruits that NYU is an

institution that protects its vulnerable members and has an institutional commitment to advance values of diversity and free speech against threats.

This is a moment when those institutions of higher learning that speak out for sanctuary will be distinguished from those who did not. Institutions that undertake this proactive step (and those that do not) will have a historic significance.

Members from 29 departments, organizations, and offices at NYU have signed a letter to President Hamilton asking once again that he explicitly declare NYU a sanctuary campus as a way to affirm commitment to protecting students, staff, workers and faculty.

If President Hamilton decides against declaring NYU a sanctuary campus, our community immediately becomes vulnerable.

What I Noticed About Not Being Noticed

The start of a new semester is hectic and exciting. It evokes memories of semesters past, and for freshmen, memories of Welcome Week-induced nerves have probably resurfaced. Most students’ first week in New York City is strange and overwhelming. In retrospect, many students may remember that week as being afflicted by one specific feeling: anonymity. This anonymity can be a daunting feature of an undergraduate career at NYU, but it has its silver lining.

To have visited New York City is not to have lived in it. Before leaving home, exclamations of “Wow,

that’s a big city!” could be easily countered with “I know, Nana.” We didn’t know, though, and it was impossible to truly comprehend this city’s size until that first week of school. Many students often feel overwhelmed not only by NYU’s more than 25,000 undergraduate students vying for the same recognition but also by the 8 million people sharing their city. These staggering figures create an illusion of anonymity, and lead to the realization that with so many people around, no one would really notice if you never left your dorm room again. We pass hundreds of strangers on the sidewalk each day, and it’s easy to think that not one of them cares where you’re going or who you are. Job

and internship interviews reinforce this with relentless efficiency. Even within NYU, students often feel that there will always be someone more qualified to steal the spot they’re competing for.

After a short time though, we learn that this feeling is not productive. We should be trying our hardest to transform that Welcome Week-induced, anxious energy into

power and motivation. NYU can certainly motivate us. With more than 300 clubs and organizations, there is truly a place here for everyone. NYU subdivides its substantial student body by creating opportunities that shrink this city into something manageable.

Outside our community, the city rages on, and the people we pass on the sidewalk each day still never notice us. But with this anonymity can come a certain drive, one specific to New York City alone. NYU students strive to be noticed in a city full of eight million people. We long to be heard among thousands of others trying to say the same thing. Students at this university possess an aston-

ishing ambition, which pushes us past the more qualified, more impressive candidates for positions and recognition.

This ambition inarguably leads to many failures, but our acceptance of failure makes us tougher than other college students and more prepared for adulthood.

The anonymity that once enveloped us can translate into a fierce independence. It creates an unstoppable urge to find your place in this school and city and to be recognized for who you are, what you know and all that you can accomplish.

History is Repeating Itself

Donald Trump is not Adolf Hitler.

He is not calling for the executions of Jews, queer people and other minorities. To compare President Trump to someone who committed such atrocities not only further polarizes the country, but also does a disservice to all of the victims of the Holocaust.

However, in signing the executive order banning refugees from all countries and immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries, President Trump is responding to the humanitarian refugee crisis in the same way the United States responded to the Holocaust.

In 1939, the American Institute of Public Opinion ran a poll regarding refugee children — many of whom were Jews — fleeing Germany. At the time, 61 percent of Americans voted to block these children from entering the United States, in fear that they were German spies. This poll became a reality when 937 Jewish refugees aboard the S.S. St. Louis were not allowed into the United States. 254 of those refugees ended up dying in

Nazi death camps. Now, it is 2017, and America is once again falling short of its promise to be a land where anyone can make it.

Refugees fleeing to this country are not coming here to be violent. In fact, they are coming here to flee violence.

Studies have repeatedly shown that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the United State; people just choose to focus more on crimes committed by immigrants. When someone who claims to follow Islam commits an act of terror, people immediately condemn the entire religion. However, when a white man who claims to follow Christianity attacked a Planned Parenthood clinic in defense of Christianity’s stance on abortion, the same people who condemned Islam were silent. Even Vice President Mike Pence pointed out the

anti-American nature of a Muslim ban in a 2015 tweet.

Furthermore, this ban will only fuel the anger of radical terrorists. ISIS has already said this Muslim ban will be used as propaganda to expand its terrorist group. This ban — which is in direct violation of the First Amendment’s commitment to religious freedom and the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act — will do nothing, except hurt victims of violence and terror.

On Jan. 27, Pence addressed the March for Life, an annual protest in Washington against abortion. In his speech, Pence said, “Life is winning again in America.” While his consistent commitment to this issue is admirable, what about the lives of refugees? The women and children fleeing Syria have heartbeats too — just like the unborn babies Pence claims to care deeply about. If Pence is truly “pro-life” then he will stand up against Trump, and we can go back to progressing as a nation and as a human race.

Steinhardt Makes Progress, Still Has Work

A year and a half ago, we wrote an op-ed in this space arguing that Steinhardt’s poor treatment of students and hidden fees needed to end. Today,we’re proud to write that the Steinhardt School has announced a significant step toward taking scholarship in education, culture and human development just as seriously as scholarship in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Steinhardt School has been, since its founding, home to the academic study of professions historically dominated by women — education, physical and occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, food studies, culture studies and others. Just as these professions have long been paid less than professions dominated by men, and just as women in general have been paid much less than men for equal work, Steinhardt has had fewer resources to support its academic work than other parts of the university.

In a December memo to graduate students, Ted Magder, Steinhardt Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, announced that all “fully-funded” Ph.D. students in the Steinhardt School will receive

four full years of funding including new minimum stipends, health insurance and tuition waivers starting in fall 2017. He also announced unspecified improvements in aid to support doctoral dissertation completion, travel and research. This change is enormous. Starting in fall 2017, the most poorly funded among us will receive more than a 200 percent increase in their total compensation. For some students, this could well be the difference between leaving NYC and staying, or completing their degrees on time versus not all.

On the whole, however, Steinhardt doctoral students will have minimum funding packages equal to about 80 percent of the typical packages for our peers in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. That brings the gap between Steinhardt and CASinto line with the current estimate of the

gender pay gap in the United States— women make about 80 cents on the dollar compared to men.

Should we be proud that in doctoral funding our university now equals the unequal pay of women across professions in the United States? We think yes – kind of. This is a significant step towards what Magder called “equity issues in doctoral funding packages” in his memo. But we don’t think the work is done. In the op-ed we wrote a year and a half ago, we quoted Steinhardt Gale and Ira Drukier Dean Dominic Brewer when he named the founding goal of the Steinhardt School as to raise the “art of teaching to the same dignified plane as the professions of law and medicine.” 80 percent is not yet that “dignified plane.”

And so, we salute the administration of our Steinhardt School and NYU for setting the bar of equity and achieving a dignified plane for our fields of study, and we salute the school and university for taking this significant step toward that goal. But we also call on you to continue to build from this progress until that goal is achieved.

Good Samaritan Policy Isn’t Very Good

Drugs and alcohol will always be present on college campuses, regardless of rules. Universities often struggle to find the line between actively suppressing illegal substances and ensuring students get the help they need if they endanger themselves. NYU practices what is called the “Good Samaritan Policy.” This policy claims that students will not be disciplined if they ask for help when someone is suffering from alcohol poisoning or an overdose. However, the policy’s exact wording leaves room for a variety of interpretations.

While it can be reassuring that the university’s top priority is the health and safety of its students, its policy is unclear. The reality is that this measure actually serves to exonerate the university from whatever negative outcomes result from its current stance. In deliberately vague language, NYU’s policy states that “The University reserves the right to address any associated acts that compromise the well-being of the community and its members” and that it will handle these events, “on a case-by-case basis” leaving students guessing as to what possible actions may be taken against them.

In comparison, Columbia University’s policy explicitly states its intention of protecting the student in need of medical attention, the student responsible for reporting the incidence and all other parties involved.

Since NYU and Columbia students cope with the same city environment, it would be reasonable to expect similar guidelines for dealing with life threatening situations. It is unacceptable to create an environment in which there is an active deterrent to saving the life of a peer. Studies have shown that most people who witness an overdose do not call for help, because they fear legal consequences. These statistics suggest a high probability of lethal scenarios that only seem more likely to happen in a city such as ours.

While the university is certainly within its rights to investigate and discipline alcohol and drug related offenses, the policy’s ambiguous wording does not help students or the administration. A more explicit approach, modeled after the policies put out by Columbia and Cornell University, would create an environment that both protects the well being of students and clearly defines the authority of university staff.

It is apparent in the policy statement that Student Affairs’ intentions are in the right place — they still stress that student well being will remain a top priority — but they have left a gray area that might deter students from saving the lives of their peers.

Hockey Strong at Home

The NYU Hockey Team defended its home ground with a strong 12-2 victory over the weekend.

By RACHEL RUECKER Senior Editor While the NHL’s elite headed down to Los Angeles for the All-Star festivities, NYU’s hockey contingent demonstrated some all-star power of their own this weekend.

The Violets began the first of five consecutive home games Friday night with a 12-2 shellacking of Central Connecticut State University, a game in which NYU took full advantage of its power play opportunities and managed to stay out the penalty box — more than usual, at least.

With a raucous home crowd cheering them on, freshman forward Brandon Ritchey opened the scoring 2:41 into the game. Junior defenseman Charles Arsenescu doubled the Violet lead just over a minute later.

The Violets out-hustled the CCSU Blue Devils, leading to the third goal of the night from junior forward Michael Conslato, the team leader in goals, later on in the frame.

The Blue Devils cross-checked against the Violets, earning them a man-advantage. CCSU managed to stave off the Violets, but later, on a 5-on-3, sophomore forward John Kowalewski put the Violets up by four before the first period’s end.

It didn’t take long for the Violets to get back into a scoring rhythm after the intermission, with freshman forward Scott Mulligan netting one 2:03 in. The Violets didn’t get their first penalty until 7:07 in the second when senior defenseman Evan Ripley headed to the box for elbowing.

The Violets got the kill. Mulligan bookended the penalty perfectly, getting the 6-0 goal at 11:37.

The shutout bid ended when freshman goalie Adam Salisbury was beaten by the Blue Devils at 14:18. Sweet redemption came moments later when sophomore forward Jack Orne got the seventh goal on a power play. Before the end of the frame — in which the Violets outshot the Blue Devils 19-4 — Ripley got an eighth goal for NYU, ‘cause why not? Through two periods, the Violets had a devastating 37-7

lead in shots on goal.

CCSU switched goalies for the third and final frame, managing to draw first blood in the third when they scored their second goal at 3:15. But that’s where their scoring stopped, while NYU had four more goals to score before the final buzzer sounded. Goals came from sophomore forward Keaton Baum and freshman defenseman Giancarlo Pochintesta, while sophomore forward Mason Gallegos earned the last two.

By the end NYU marked their 18th win of the season with a 10-point margin.

Head Coach Chris Cosentino was excited by the big win but stayed humble, knowing that this was merely the beginning.

“The key for our team is to make sure we are ready to play our best hockey every night,” Cosentino said. “Regardless of who the opponent is, we need to focus on getting better as a hockey team. Prior to last night we have only scored 12 goals in our last four games combined. Although we are winning games, we need to start scoring more goals and [Sunday] afternoon against Keene is going to be another

great test for us.”

Goalscorer Pochintesta commented that the team has found its groove and everyone knows their place within the team.

“We’ve been playing well together as five-man units, and everybody is buying into the system and playing their role,” Pochintesta said. “Nobody is trying to do too much; as long as we keep playing our game and trusting the process, we know what we’re capable of.”

Sunday saw the Violets facing off against Keene State College. NYU refamiliarized itself with the penalty box and was handed a 4-on-4 and a holding penalty right after. KSC earned a power play goal on their man advantage to get ahead by one. Mulligan got thrown into the box soon after, but this time around it worked in the Violets’ favor as Baum eked out a shorthanded goal.

After the first, the Violets were up by one.

In the second, Arsenescu added in NYU’s third at 4:25. Things got messy later on in the period when a pair of Violets were tossed into the box. The Violets killed the first penalty, but Keene State managed to use the second to get within one.

The second continued with a series of 4-on-4 and 4-on-3 action, but nothing came of it and the frame ended with NYU still at a 3-2 advantage.

The action of the third didn’t materialize until its dying moments, when Keene State tied the game at three with just over a minute remaining. Then, in a mad dash, NYU answered with its fourth from Conslato at 19:29.

Time ran out before Keene State could try any funny business, increasing NYU’s record in 2017 to a perfect 4-0.

“We are going to continue taking everything one day at a time, and be prepared to be the best team we can be,” Cosentino said.

The team will be back at Chelsea Piers next weekend as they continue their fivegame homestand.

NYU Reacts: Super Bowl LI

The NFL and its players have been a source of heated debate over the past year. Through the league’s lack of effort to prevent and inform about the dangers of brain injury experienced by players, its inability to properly condemn and punish cases of domestic violence and quell the outrage over Colin Kaepernick’s political protest, the NFL has constantly been in the news cycle lately.

The integrity of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots created another spectacle. In 2016, both faced punishments after altering footballs to give themselves advantages. Tom Brady also publicly supported Donald Trump in this past election. With the past year in mind, NYU students approach next weekend’s Super Bowl Sunday and this year’s Patriots versus Falcons matchup with mixed feelings, ranging from the couldn’t-care-less to the skeptic to the passionate fan. Here are some of their thoughts.

NYU’s Weekly Sports Update

As spring semester falls into a rhythm, NYU athletics are trying to find theirs too. During the first week back, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams dropped two games, men’s volleyball split games on home court and wrestling lost their dual match.

Basketball After both the men’s and women’s teams lost to the University of Chicago on Sunday, Jan. 22, the Violets were looking to improve their records at the University of Rochester on Friday, Jan. 27 and Emory University on Sunday, Jan. 29. But both teams dropped two games in a row, with the women losing 68-49 to Rochester and 78-75 to Emory, and the men 96-71 to Rochester and 84-75 to Emory.

Freshman Shaye McGoey opened the women’s scoring against Rochester with a free throw and continued to lead the Violets in scoring, netting 13 points by the end of the game. Although NYU drew first blood, Rochester stayed on top, leading 15-7 after the first quarter and 39-21 at halftime.

The close game against Emory had NYU leading for most of it, until Emory managed to take a 76-75 lead with less than a minute to go in the final quarter.

Senior Amy Harioka tried to tie the game with a three-pointer, but unfortunately the Violets fell by three to the Eagles.

The men’s team didn’t fare too much better. In Rochester, the Yellowjackets scored the first eight, and the Violets couldn’t recover from the rough start as Rochester continued to lead through the rest of the game. Freshman Jack Heller led NYU’s scoring with 17 points — a career-high — and freshman Joshua Bunch also achieved a career-high with 11 points.

At Emory, the Violets were down three after the first half, but ultimately lost by nine. Junior Ross Udine led NYU with 23 points.

Both the men’s and women’s teams play home games against the University of Rochester on Friday.

Men’s Volleyball Men’s volleyball won one and lost one at home on Saturday, Jan. 28. The first game was a 3-1 loss to Springfield College, with NYU losing the first two sets 2516 and 25-11, and winning the third set 26-24. In the fourth and final set, however, the Violets lost 25-22.

The 3-0 win against the College of Mount St. Vincent showed that the Violets could rebound even after a rough game against Springfield. NYU won all three sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-22) after breaking two 9-9 ties in the first two sets.

The Violets play again in the Morgan Classic, hosted by Springfield College, on Feb. 3-4.

They first face off against Vassar College on Friday.

Wrestling The wrestling team, ranked 14th, lost the Jan. 27 dual match to Stevens Institute of Technology, making their season record 12-4. Stevens Tech won the first six bouts, and NYU rallied to win three of the next four, but it wasn’t enough to take the W. Freshman Blaise Benderoth, senior John Messinger and sophomore Santino Pelusi won their bouts for NYU. The Violets traveled to Providence, RI Sunday for Johnson & Wales University’s USC Wildcat Open, where a number of the men had strong individual performances.

The grapplers will travel to Bridgewater, MA next Saturday for a trio of matches.
