THURGOOD MARSHALL FUND LAUNCHES APPLE HBCU SCHOLARS PROGRAM
The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) today launched the application process for the inaugural year of the Apple HBCU Scholars Program, the largest and most comprehensive scholarship effort in HBCU history. Thirty successful undergraduate student recipients will be awarded sizable scholarships and receive year-long mentorships by Apple employees to include a paid internship at Apple headquarters next summer. The scholarship program is open to students in their final year of study from all of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Predominately Black Institutions (PBI). “There are “scholarships” and then there are “scholarship programs,” said TMCF President & CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. “Apple has made an historic investment in a scholarship program that will transform the lives of HBCU star students by not only removing the financial barriers to college attendance, but by providing them additional non-financial program elements like Apple mentors and summer internships. These Apple HBCU Scholars will be the future tech industry leaders.” The Apple HBCU Scholars Program is the first of several programs

under the new Apple and TMCF Diversity Initiative. In March, Apple and TMCF announced a partnership to identify, develop and harness talent from the nation’s community of HBCU’s. The over $40 million multi-year commitment from Apple is the largest and most comprehensive corporate investment ever given exclusively for students and faculty of four-year HBCUs. The multi-year commitment includes funding to build a talent database, internships for high achieving students, exposure to Apple’s campus and work environment, and funding of faculty innovation grants focused on developing successful ways to accelerate
HBCU students into the tech field. Through TMCF’s entrepreneurial division, select students who have desires to build businesses using technology will have an opportunity to attend Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference and discover new pathways to successful entrepreneurship through developing new ideas and new apps.
The Scholars Program will provide students with a diverse and valuable set of learning and personal growth opportunities that include: a scholarship up to $25,000 for their senior year of studies; a summer internship at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California; participation in a year-round development program to prepare for post-graduation careers; pairing with an Apple employee mentor during students’ senior year; the opportunity to serve as Ambassadors on their HBCU campuses to build awareness for the Apple and TMCF Diversity Initiative; the opportunity to attend TMCF’s Annual Leadership Institute in Washington, DC in November 2015; and participation in the Apple HBCU Immersion experience in Cupertino, California during the spring of 2016.
“This program is about exposing gifted students from HBCU’s to a career in technology. We’re big believers that innovation will be strongest when talented people from diverse backgrounds are part of the creative process,” said Denise Young Smith, Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide
The application process is open now and will close on September 18, 2015. For more information on the Apple HBCU Scholars Program and eligibility requirements visit http://tm.cf/L1. For information on the TMCF Apple Diversity Initiative, visit tmcf.org and follow @TMCF_ HBCU on Twitter.
CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO ATTRACT BLACK FATHERS TO MILLION MAN MARCH It has been nearly 20 years since the historic Million Man March in October of 1995. Much has transpired over this time with the nation’s Black Men and Families. Recent Pew research indicates that black fathers are engaged more than any other population of fathers in the day-today activities and rearing of their children. “We have a long way to go, however we have made some significant progress in challenging and disproving the societal view of black fathers,” says Kenneth Braswell, Executive Director of Fathers Incorporated. Beginning the first week in August and up until the march, the Atlanta based not-for-profit will encourage at least 20,000 black fathers across the nation to sign “the HONORABLE man” pledge on its website (www. millionblackfathers.com) in order to represent the new 21st Century dad at the October 10th, twentieth anniversary celebration of the NewYorkTrendnyc 2
Justice or Else Million Man March in Washington, DC. “In the first couple of weeks (pre-launch) we already have signatures from fathers in 33 cities in 13 states presenting nearly 100 children. This is a clear indicator that black fathers understand both the significance and importance of having their voices represented on
the platform of this historic and memorable occasion,” says Braswell. For eleven weeks leading up the march, activities will include a comprehensive social media campaign to generate conversation around the principles of the HONORABLE man, to include “word of the week”, video of the

week and contest challenges to sign up fathers to take the pledge. The hashtag #honorableman will be used to capture the excitement created by the effort. FI is also proud to announce its National Advisory Council. These progressive thought leaders from around the country will advise and assist the development and implementation of the campaign. “The Campaign for Black Male Achievement believes that Black men are assets to their families and communities, particularly as caring, loving fathers in the lives of their children. That’s why were are thrilled to partner with Fathers Incorporated’s Honorable Man campaign to encourage 20,000 Black fathers to be engaged in the upcoming 20th anniversary of the Million Man March. We envision that this campaign will revive and encourage thousands of Black fathers to elevate their impact in the lives of their families and community,” says Shawn Dove, CEO, Campaign for Black Male Achievement. www.newyorktrendnyc.com

GUEST COMMENTARY IS THERE A GLOBAL DEMOCRATIC RECESSION? A CONTRARIAN VIEW
By Julie Fisher
When I hear generalizations about the entire planet, I sometimes think of Hamlet’s admonition to Horatio: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” That said, this particular morsel of conventional wisdom is not devoid of statistical evidence, since it is based on data about political rights and civil liberties compiled by Freedom House over nine years. Jay Ulfelder, however, uses Freedom House’s own data to argue that democracy has not been discarded. By using statistical “heat maps,” he finds that while political rights today look a lot like 2005, they remain clearly better than 1995 and nothing like the equivalent maps for the 1970s or 1980s. The number of electoral democracies actually increased in 2014 to 125, an all-time high. Although the slowdown in progress on political rights and civil liberties is worrisome, Ulfelder demonstrates that most of those declines have occurred in countries already under authoritarian rule. Support for this observation is highlighted by William Dobson in his book “The Dictator’s Learning Curve.” Dobson focuses on how authoritarians such as Hugo Chavez in Venezuela learned from their mistakes. Twenty years ago most dictators didn’t even know what NGOs were, and now they are often targets of repression. Dobson also, however, writes about exceptionally
well organized international organizations that support democracy such as the Albert Einstein Institution and Otpor, founded by a group of Serbians who helped overthrow Slobodan Milosovic.
The number of electoral democracies actually increased in 2014 to 125, an all-time high. My own work, “Importing Democracy,” (http://www. importingdemocracy.org) is based on the assumption that the growth of civil society in general, and democratization NGOs in particular, is having a slow, but steady impact on democratization, in spite of governmental repression. The leaders of these organizations “import” democratic ideas

from other countries, such as participatory municipal budgeting from Brazil, and from the past through their reading of Enlightenment thinkers. They also recover local democratic traditions. For example, democratization NGOs in Tajikistan work with local community organizations called Majlis and encourage them to include women. Although “Importing Democracy” focuses on South Africa, Tajikistan and Argentina, democratization NGOs are an ignored global trend, surviving, if not always flourishing in many other countries. A major challenge is whether such organizations can build ties with pro-democracy street protests. The statistics tell two different, if not opposite, stories about the present. The future may depend on what happens to civil society organizations in general
and democratization NGOs in particular. It seems likely that they will continue to flourish in flawed democracies such as South Africa and Argentina, since democratization gives people hope for the future, despite poverty, inequality and corruption. Continued repression in authoritarian countries, however, will require innovative international thinking, based on what creative democrats are already doing in their own countries. Julie Fisher, author of “Importing Democracy: The Role of NGOs in South Africa, Tajikistan & Argentina” (www. importingdemocracy.org), is passionate about democracy, linked as it is to improved economic performance, increased equality, political stability, good governance and the avoidance of war. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC.

REMEMBERING CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER AMELIA BOYNTON ROBINSON
The NAACP family is saddened at the passing of civil rights activist and freedom fighter Amelia Boynton Robinson at the age of 104. Ms. Boynton Robinson, often referred to as the matriarch of the voting rights movement, was the first female Democratic candidate from Alabama to run for a seat in Congress. One of the organizers of the 1965 Montgomery to Selma march, she was attacked by state troopers while crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. Fifty years after “Bloody Sunday,” Ms. Boynton Robinson was pushed in a wheelchair across that same bridge and held the hand of President Barack Obama as she attended a commemoration ceremony earlier this year.
as she was beaten on a bridge on a sabbath called Bloody Sunday. Through both bloodied sacrifice and bold leadership, Ms. Boynton helped pass national legislation that prohibited voter discrimination for 50 years. As I march, I dedicate my miles to Ms. Boynton and honor her legacy by remaining steadfast in our commitment to ensure that our fundamental right to vote is returned to its former strength, and that everyone has the ability to participate in our democracy.” “Amelia Boynton was a woman of faith who dedicated her life to empowering people, and her work for civil rights came after decades spent fighting for women’s suffrage,” said Roslyn M. Brock, chairman of the NAACP. “Her strength and perseverance were an inspiration that brought the civil rights movement to Selma. Ms. Boynton believed that everyone had the responsibility to oppose injustice and conquer prejudice. Her presence will be missed but her legacy of courage and unifying people for the greater good remains an example for us all.”
“Less than a month ago, I stood on the steps of Amelia Boynton’s former home in Selma as we launched our 860 mile America’s Journey for Justice,” said Cornell William Brooks, President and CEO of the NAACP. “Ms. Boynton had the courage of conviction to stand and stare into the ugly face of hateful violence and yet see a better and beautiful America--even NewYorkTrendnyc 10

Created by hit-maker Dan Schneider (iCarly, Victorious, Henry Danger), the new series centers on middle-school students Babe (Cree Cicchino), a girl who dreams big, and Kenzie (Madisyn Shipman), a kid who can code. Together they create the biggest mobile game of the year named Sky Whale and team up with rap superstar Double G (‘90s icon Kel Mitchell), his son Triple G (Benjamin “Lil P-Nut” Flores Jr.) and schoolmate Hudson (Thomas Kuc) to launch their own gaming empire. Tying the show to today’s kids’ love of gaming and apps, the games created by Babe and Kenzie in the series will be made available to kids to play on Nick. com and through the Nick app. The first game to be released will be Sky Whale, featured in the premiere episode, which will be available for free in September in the Apple, Google and Amazon app stores.
