In observing the history of U.S. presidents today, does degrees of separation matter like in times past? It is extremely important for leaders to develop essential leadership skills along with communication skills to be effective in the age of knowledge that we live in today; it is expected in today’s society and we should expect them to live up to this standard of excellence.

I would encourage all politicians who are running for election regardless of the position of the particular office to study both the life and times of great leaders to get a feel of the substance, style and times which strengthened the decision making capacity of great leaders both in the past and the present.

When we look at presidents such as Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, what can we learn about what separated them in leadership style, communication patterns and effectiveness? Abraham Lincoln sprung up from humble beginnings, and developed excellent oratory skills. He was also able to develop a level of emotional intelligence during his time, even though the term was not coined as such yet. Barack Obama is known to be charismatic leader with oracle skills akin to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and known to have high EQ and skills to be a consensus builder. Ronald Reagan was known as the “Great Communicator”, and certainly had the ability to connect to the American public. His background in acting probably was an asset on one of the greatest stages on the planet. Bill Clinton has been called one of the greatest one-on-one communicators on the planet, and when he speaks to a person it is said that he focuses on them like no one else in the world exist at that moment.

When we look at many of the candidates in the current presidential election, we do not see the above presidential candidates all possessed to some degree. Becoming an effective leader and communicator of noteworthy achievement requires activity

Any serious presidential candidate in this century needs not have a deficit in displaying the highest degree of skills in the areas of communication and leadership. In fact the act of running for one of the highest offices in the world should enlighten any women and man seeking such an office.

If any candidate for the U.S. Presidency seriously engages the American public and takes away much of what they learn from listening to the American public on the trail to the white house, they will invariably become a better person through understanding some of the vast points of view of the American public.

Once again, we face the painful reality that the life of yet another African American young man has been taken without a single person being held accountable. Freddie Gray and his family will not get the justice they deserve. Just as Trayvon Martin and his family received no justice and Eric Garner, Michael Brown and Jamar Clark and so many others. We can only continue to honor and seek justice for those lives lost by seeking and ensuring true reform and accountability.

CON EDISON TESTING DRONES FOR ENERGY INSPECTIONS

The company is testing the drone technology as a way to reduce the time and cost it takes to inspect the boilers, which are an integral part of the largest district steam system in the world. Con Edison provides steam – a green energy source – to more than 1,600 large customers, including the Empire State Building, Grand Central Terminal, the World Trade Center and other landmark buildings. Con Edison is testing drones to carry inspection cameras inside of the towering boilers that produce steam for some of New York City’s most iconic buildings.

“Inspecting our boilers requires workers to build up to 10-story scaffolding and go through confined-space training,” said Margarett Jolly, director of Research and Development for Con Edison. “Using innovations in technology, we can speed up the process while still upholding and perhaps improving quality and safety.” Con Edison is conducting the testing at a steam plant on the East Side of Manhattan near the East River. The boilers are 10-stories high and each produces 1.2 million pounds of steam in an hour. The steam system also produces electricity, helping to keep service reliable for 3.4 million electric customers. The drones use video, camera, and thermal technology to produce images in real time. BLACK BUSINESS IS A SMALL ENGINE THAT COULD CHANGE AMERICA

I was inspired by another fantastic businessman Mr. Percy Sutton. He stated that the reason for lack of business development was that many blacks did not grow up in a culture of business. I was inspired by Mr. Percy Sutton quote: “I believe that anything is possible if one has access to people of ability and capital.” All of his life he had been exposed to people of ability, but sometimes lacked the capital. The marriage of people of ability and capital expands life’s possibilities to create miracles.

Black Business is certainly the small engine that could change America. As I write this article, the story of John H. Johnson, Founder of Jet and Ebony Magazine served as a fantastic inspiration for writing “The Little Engine that could Change America”. In a book about the life of Mr. John H. Johnson, Succeeding Against the Odds, I learned that if you develop people self-interest they will develop your self-interest. He inspired me to a life of service to others, and I am forever grateful of his impact on my life. Mr. John H. Johnson life served as a fantastic inspiration to not only to Blacks, but to all Americans. He was a man of humble beginnings that borrowed $500.00 dollars from his mother to start a 500 Million Dollar business empire, at a time when conditions were harsh for Black Americans. Madame C. Walker gave us a glimpse in how to get started on our path to financial empowerment when she stated we often get our best start when we push ourselves, and a start is often what is needed to get us on the road to financial achievement. S. B. Fuller is another financial giant that who became a millionaire in the height of segregation. He once said that his mother told him that they lacked what they needed because his father did not have the desire for achievement.

Desire is that starting point of all achievement. Nothing from nothing leaves nothing, but with desire you already have riches within your reach if only you learn

We are one of the most educated people of the world and our earning power is greater than some countries in the world. I have made a determination to focus my life in the area helping Blacks advance in the area of Economic Empowerment. I stand on the shoulders of such fantastic business tycoons such as Mr. John H. Johnson, Reginald Lewis, Earl Graves, Robert Johnson, A. G. Gaston, Madame C. J. Walker, and S. B. Fuller, just to name a few.

His quote inspired me to go into the Haircut Barbershop Franchise by finding people of ability to work together, and combining capital. The Corporation we formed Nguzo Saba Inc. went on to open multiple Haircut Hut Barbershop Franchises for well over a decade. I am indebted to Mr. Percy Sutton for the wisdom that he imparted in one page in a book written by Mr. Robert H. Adams, 15 Years of Minority Business Development. I also give thanks to Mr. Robert H. By Phil Andrews Dr. Roscoe Brown, Jr. the famed Tuskegee pilot flew a total of 68 combat missions as a fighter squadron commander of the distinguished group known as the Tuskegee Airman in Tuskegee, Alabama. Dr. Brown was also a founding member of the 100 Black Men of New York, Inc. a civic group founded in 1963. He also served as a chapter president of 100 Black Men. I am proud to have met him on several occasions during my tenure at 100 Black Men. I too was a president of a 100 Black Men local chapter in the NewYorkTrendnyc

New York State for two terms. As the Business Editor of Star Journal News visitor’s guide, I can speak directly to the influence of men such as Dr. Roscoe Brown who turned over every stone to achieve fairness and equality in all phases of life for African Americans in Society. I was recently interviewed in Black Enterprise Magazine as a BE Modern Man and made mention of one of my mentees former Tuskegee Airman Ed Monroe whispering in my ear on many occasions and stating that “We all have a little Tuskegee in us.”

HEALTH DEPARTMENT LAUNCHES YOUTH-CENTERED ADS TO AVOID SUGARY DRINKS The New York City Health Department today announced a new youth-centered advertising campaign to get New Yorkers drinking more of the City’s high quality tap water. In the “Drink NYC Tap Water” ads, school-age children share why water is a healthy choice, and how it helps them do more of what they love, like sports, dancing and singing. They also show how combining water with their favorite fruits is fun and delicious. These new ads complement recent campaigns that highlight the health benefits of drinking water, a healthy and zero calorie choice, and warn against the overconsumption of drinks containing high amounts of sugar. Starting today, the ads will run on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, as well as on television throughout the summer. The ads can be found on the agency’s YouTube channel, NYC Health. “We’re excited to have the help of our youngest residents to encourage New Yorkers to drink more water,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett. “There’s no better way to stay hydrated and refreshed during the hot summer months than with New York City’s high-quality tap water.”

REPORT: FIRST BABY BORN WITH ZIKA-RELATED MICROCEPHALY IN NYC been preparing for this scenario for many months now, and we stand ready to help families caring for an infant with microcephaly. This case is a sad reminder that Zika can have tragic consequences for pregnant women.”

The Health Department has reported the first baby delivered with Zika-related microcephaly at a hospital in New York City. The baby and mother are currently in care and being monitored by physicians. The baby’s mother was infected while in an area with ongoing Zika transmission. The baby has been diagnosed with microcephaly – or a smaller than normal head – and other brain problems. Tests have determined that the baby is positive for Zika. The Health Department is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on this case. “Today, I am the bearer of sad news: we have confirmed New York City’s first baby born with microcephaly associated with the Zika virus,” said Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, Dr. Herminia Palacio. “The City has 6

“While not surprising, given the travel trends of our global city, this case is a strong reminder of the tragic consequences of the Zika virus. We are monitoring the baby’s health closely and connecting the family with the necessary services to take care of their child,” said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett. “I remind all pregnant women in New York City, and those trying to get pregnant, that they should delay travel to places where there is active Zika transmission. As we see today, the consequences for the child can be devastating.” The Health Department announced that physicians have requested testing for more than 2,000 pregnant women who have traveled to areas where there is active transmission of Zika. Additionally, pregnant women continue to be tested for potential sexual exposure following travelrelated Zika exposure of their

sexual partner. In the last month, the daily number of test requests has steadily increased. Last Friday alone, the City’s Zika Test Call Center received 56 test requests. Of the 2,000 pregnant women who have been tested, 41 have been confirmed to have the Zika virus as of July 15, 2016. The Health Department’s travel advisory urges pregnant women and those trying to conceive not travel to places where there is active transmission of the Zika virus. These places currently include virtually all South and Central America and the Caribbean. It is also critical to use barrier protection (male and female condoms, dental dams, etc.) when having sex with someone who traveled to an area with active transmission. If a family emergency or other important matter requires travel to a Zika-affected area, pregnant women should stay indoors during the day and use mosquito repellent. Women who may become pregnant are advised to use an effective contraceptive method to prevent an unplanned pregnancy. As part of the Mayor’s $21 million investment in preparing the city for Zika, the Health Department expanded the capacity of the Public Health Laboratory to meet the demand for Zika surveillance and testing. In March, the Department established a new dedicated call center for health care providers to process testing requests. Further, the Department distributed travel advisory posters to over a thousand healthcare providers likely to see pregnant women, including urgent care centers, community health centers and OB/GYN practices. The Department continues to work with the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology to disseminate medical guidance and answer provider questions about testing, on implementing protocols for care management of pregnant women, and collaborating with the CDC on a national registry of Zikainfected pregnant women. and the Cabo Verde experience. “For me, art is a way for me to not just tell a story, but how I feel about a story,” he says. “And art is a way to talk about stories that aren’t told.”

By Ann Brown They say music is the universal language, but art may even be more so. And one of the best communicators is Cabo Verde is Tchalé Figueira, whom I have had the pleasure to getting to know. Vivacious, talented, opinionated, outspoken, friendly, fun-loving are just a few of the adjectives to describe Tchalé–and I am sure there are more! One of the most sought-after artists in the African island nation, he also has a major international following. “I love painting. I paint every day. I can not go a day without painting. I can’t,” he admits with a hearty chuckle. Born in 1953 on the Cabo Verde island of São Vicente, when Cabo Verde was still colonized by Portugal, Tchalé left his beloved country at the age 17 so he would not have to fight in the colonial war. He wound up in the Netherlands where he worked on a boat. Not much later he traveled to Switzerland and it was in Switzerland where he discovered his love of painting, inspired by an older brother living there and who himself was a painter. In the late ‘70s Tchalé already had his first exhibition.

Now back in CV, based in both Praia (on Santiago island) and Mindelo (on the island of São Vicente), Tchalé also manages a home-based gallery called PauTcha Arts with his wife, Paulina Teixeira Figueira. PauTcha Arts not only showcases Tchale’s work but that of other African artists. Tchalé art work is in high demand, and he also has a following as a write. “If I am not painting, I am writing,” he says. “I love reading and I also love writing short stories. Like painting, I try to write everyday. For me it’s another way for me to express myself, for me to tell stories, and hopefully people will want to read these stories.”

Ponty Bistro, the restaurant known for its creative French + African cuisine, will celebrate its second anniversary in its Harlem location with a special happy hour on Thursday, August 4. Led by Senegalese-American chef Elhadji A. Cisse (Chef Cisse)—who was a 2009 finalist on the hit Food Network show “Chopped”—together with his first cousin Ali Cisse (Chef Ali), the location has become an uptown hotspot. The restaurant’s first location, opened in 2008, is a Gramercy Park favorite. In honor of the momentous occasion, the chefs are inviting food lovers for a free sangria from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on August 4. The full happy hour runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and includes free hors d’oeuvres, with other cocktails ranging from $6 to $8. Even though Tchalé is in demand, he wishes there were more of a spotlight on and support of the arts–fine arts, music, visual–by he government “Being an artist is extremely hard but we play a major role in a society. Imagine a world without the arts? There would be no world. And I feel artists should receive support and recognition for their work,” notes Tchalé. “Cabo Verde is known worldwide for its music, yet musicians are not compensated well here. And until just recently there was very little in the way of music. This to me in unacceptable. Governments should support the arts for art is the window into a society. Cape Verde has some globally recognized painters, yet they have very few galleries to showcase their work. This is a major challenge and a shame.” Still, more and more people worldwide are finding out about the artists of Cabo Verde, albeit slowly, and Tchalé is more than ready.

“My family got me out of Cabo Verde when I was young. Those times were really bad and oppressive in Cabo Verde at the time,” he recalls. “I enjoyed being overseas. Working on a boat.
