EXCLUSIVE EV ENT SP O TL IGHTS C O M M U N I T Y S U C C E S S STORIES & THE EC O N O MIC IMPA C T O F T H E B LA C K RESTAURANT ACCELER ATO R PRO G R A M BALTIMORE (Sept. 12, 2023) -- The PepsiCo Foundation, National Urban League, and Greater Baltimore Urban League's first Culinary Tasting Event showcased and highlighted the success stories emerging from their impactful partnership, the Black Restaurant Accelerator Program.

The Black Restaurant Accelerator Program (BRAP), a joint initiative between PepsiCo Foundation, the National Urban League, and Greater Baltimore Urban League (GBUL), aims to provide support and resources to Black-owned restaurants across the country. Recognizing these businesses' critical role in their communities, the GBUL BRAP program empowers entrepreneurs and builds a stronger future for Black-owned restaurants.

The accelerated program runs for 8-10 weeks of intense and informative information to educate, enhance, and

sustain Black-owned restaurants in Maryland. The cohort consists of a series of workshops in addition to oneto-one personal coaching guidance from our expert consultants to support the growth and scaling of their businesses.

The event was held on September 12th at 6 pm, at the Baltimore World Trade Center. A city rich in culture and history, Baltimore serves as the perfect backdrop to celebrate the resilience and achievements of Black-owned restaurants as the city is home to many successful grantee stories.

The success of this nationwide partnership can be seen in the numbers since the inception of the program in 2021:  More than 1,000 business owners across the country have been served by the Black Restaurant Accelerator Program

"We are inspired by the impact we are making through our collaboration with the National Urban League to address a fundamental gap and create opportunities for Black business owners to build generational wealth and continue to strengthen their communities," C.D. Glin, President of PepsiCo Foundation, said. "By providing Black-owned restaurants with capital, technical assistance, and access to resources, we believe we can make a measurable impact on their trajectory not just today but for generations to come."

Program grantees shared their inspiring growth, innovation, and community impact stories.

"As a first-generation black woman and entrepreneur, there are many things we are not taught or have access to when building our businesses.

The Black Restaurant Accelerator program opened doors that previously seemed impenetrable. The support and feedback from the business coaches have refocused me on the upward trajectory of French Toast Connection.

Launching Saturday, Oct. 7, and running through Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, the exhibit will feature expansive exhibits exploring hip-hop music, dance, graffiti, fashion, business, activism, and history as well as artifacts from hip-hop pioneers like Tupac Shakur, the Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J, and many more.

Additionally, the exhibit features a oneof-a-kind Sonic Playground, featuring five interactive stations that invite visitors of all ages to partake in DJing, rapping and sampling, all essential elements comprising hip-hop culture. Additional virtual and in-person education and community engagement programs will be announced at a later date.

Mo’Nique shared her concern about the alleged lack of compensation for their work on ‘The Parkers,’ a show that has been on the air for 24 years. She and Vaughn starred in the sitcom from 1999 to 2004 which ran for five seasons with over 110 episodes.

The idea for HBCU Legacy Fashion originated in 2019 as a fashionable clothing line for kids – and after Fultz misplaced the licensing application for the business.

“I went looking for the application and could not find it,” Fultz said. “At the time I had a 3-year-old and a 1-and-ahalf-year-old and they had been playing in my office. When I ran into my office all my papers were on the floor, but on top of the stack they made was the licensing application I needed for this business.”

Fast forward to today, and Fultz has created a brand where she can stylishly bring awareness to HBCUs and help fund the education of future HBCU graduates.

“One thing we really want to stand for is being able to connect the youth to their parents’ HBCU,” Fultz said. “We held our first virtual vending for (A&T’s) homecoming in 2021 and in 2022 we held one in person. This year, we plan to do the same and expand out to a few other homecomings like Howard and Spell-House (Spelman-Morehouse).”

The brand’s apparel includes jackets, crop top hoodies, sweatshirts, t-shirts and other unique items for adults and children.

“I wanted to bring something fresh to this market,” Fultz said. “Usually you see heat-press t-shirts and stuff that’s going to fade. I wanted classic clothing that was going to last for a while.”

Fultz received her B.S. in journalism and mass communication from A&T. She credits the confidence instilled in her as a student for her success. Former journalism and mass communications professor Gail Wiggins consistently told her to be proud of her name and to never let anyone shorten or mispronounce it.

“That’s one that N.C. A&T will instill into you is confidence in your culture, your name, your background, and where

you’re from,” said Fultz. “That’s one of the biggest things that you do have to have as a business owner. You’re going to have to be confident when you walk into a room with people who may have been doing this longer than you have or if you have to pitch your business or if you’re trying to get funding for your business. A&T definitely gave me the confidence that I needed.”

HBCU Legacy Fashion has grown since its creation in May 2020, with brand apparel available for purchase in 36 Belk stores across the United States and online through Amazon Prime.

HBCU Legacy Fashion clothing is designed with longevity in mind so that each piece can become an heirloom for future generations to honor their family’s HBCU legacy.

“You can even keep it in your family and pass it down, like with our denim jacket,” said Fultz. “A denim jacket is always a classic.”

Fultz travels to grade schools and career fairs to promote her brand and educate children about HBCUs. She continues this work through the HBCU Legacy Fashion newsletter, which is designed to help parents educate their children on what a HBCU is.

“Everyone on our mailing list gets fun facts to chat with their kids about,” she said. “So, we’re not just selling in our newsletter, we’re also providing valuable information. We also have downloadable word search puzzles with different HBCUs on them so that kids can complete them.”
