NEWS B l a c k G e n i u s Ac a d e m y A PP D E V E l O P E D FOR T E C H U S E Tech Equity Collective (TEC) is an initiative started by Google to accelerate Black innovation in tech. TEC partners with industry partners and community organizations to develop aspiring Black technical talent by creating culturally-informed career pathway programs. Today, we’re launching Black Genius Academy (BGA), a tech career exploration app that provides resources and guidance to help people identify, enroll and succeed in technical education programs such as certificate programs and technical bootcamps. Through audio interviews with Black tech leaders, personalized career action plans and coaching support, Black Genius Academy demystifies fastgrowing career fields to help learners discover what a career in tech can look like for them. Each learner on BGA receives a personalized action plan that walks them through various steps of the career discovery process. Throughout their action plan, they will gain an understanding of three fast-growing career fields — cybersecurity, software engineering, and UX (user experience) design — by listening to audio interviews with Black tech leaders from across the industry. They’ll also receive information about the necessary steps and qualifications to enter those careers. Learners are prompted to engage with a dedicated career coach in one-on-one and group coaching sessions to help them identify career goals and make informed decisions about their future.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Vanessa Bryant announced today that they will unveil Kobe Bryant’s bronze statue at Star Plaza outside of Crypto.com Arena on Feb. 8, 2024, prior to the Lakers’ home game that evening. “As you know, Kobe played his entire 20-year NBA career as a Los Angeles Laker,” said Vanessa Bryant in a video to fans posted at 8:24 this morning. “Since arriving in this city and joining the Lakers organization, he felt at home here, playing in the City of Angels. On behalf of the Lakers, my daughters and me, I am so honored that, right in the center of Los Angeles, in front of the place known as the house that Kobe built, we are going to unveil his statue so that his legacy can be celebrated forever.” Following his retirement, Kobe Bryant participated in the initial planning of the anticipated statue to come at Star Plaza. This is the first in a series of physical tributes to honor his legacy. Bryant will be the seventh Laker to be commemorated with a statue, joining Elgin Baylor, Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Jerry West and Chick Hearn. Once an action plan is completed, Black Genius Academy will recommend technical education programs that align with the learner’s chosen career pathway and learning style preference that will help them gain the necessary skills to qualify for roles. Black Genius Academy is a free web application, and no prior experience

is required to get started. Grant opportunities are available for qualifying learners to remove financial barriers to continuing education programs. Black Genius Academy was developed in collaboration with Career Karma, a tech career development platform dedicated to helping people transition into fulfilling careers.

The conference will feature a rich

program of scholarly sessions, workshops, historical tours, a film festival, an author’s book signing series, and many other events that illuminate the importance of the current struggle of resistance. Black Resistance has taken many forms throughout history. As the late Congressman John Lewis advised, “Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.” With all of the recent political upheaval, ASALH’s annual theme for 2023, “Black Resistance” has never been more timely, nor more deserving of study. African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms, especially the racial terrorism of lynching, racial

pogroms, and police killings since our arrival upon these shores. These efforts have been to advocate for a dignified selfdetermined life in a just democratic society in the United States and beyond the United States’ political

jurisdiction. The 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s in the United States were defined by actions such as sit-ins, boycotts, walkouts, and strikes by Black people and white allies in the fight for justice against discrimination in all sectors of society from employment to education to housing. Black people have had to consistently push the United States to live up to its ideals of freedom, liberty, and justice for all. During these uncertain times in which the very nature of the ways in which Black history can be legally taught are in peril, the conference provides an opportunity to explore various aspects of Black life and history.

According to ASALH President W. Marvin Dulaney, “We are actively attacking the leadership stance of the DeSantis administration and legislative bills restricting the teaching of Black History which Dr. Carter G. Woodson gave his life’s work with the founding of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).” Programming will take place “in person” in Jacksonville as well as virtually on ASALHTV (ASALH’s YouTube channel) throughout the five days of the conference. For more than 100 years, ASALH has fought to uphold the ideals of our founder, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who worked his entire career—sacrificing so much—to make the case for the contributions of African Americans to this country. He knew and understood that African American history is American history. To that end, ASALH will sponsor a meeting at The Bethel Church in Jacksonville entitled “The Value of Black History: A Community Forum” which will feature panelists who will address the community with diverse perspectives for enlightenment, empowerment and alternative options. Remarks will be given by the President of ASALH, Dr. Marvin Dulaney, the Rev. Kim McKissick, Cliff Albright of Black Voters Matter, Sundiata Cha-Jua and many others. ASALH will also offer innovative programming on the topic of Florida itself including a panel session on Freedom Schools featuring members of ASALH Florida Branches, also known as the ASALH Florida Coalition as well as a session on “The Life of James Weldon Johnson & John Rosamond Johnson” and the History of the Black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” ASALH’s plenaries this year will also feature themes of “Black Resistance” with the National Park Service leading the conference off on Wednesday the 20th with a discussion of “The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program.” Thursday’s plenary will be an examination of how Black Resistance has manifested in schools and education, with some

of the nation’s leading historians of the Black student movement. This plenary will begin with a discussion by Darius Young, Jelani Favors, Shirletta Kinchen, Zebulon Miletsky, Stefan Bradley, and Brian Jones, and then attendees will convene in the James Weldon Johnson Park for a Banned Book “Readout” jointly sponsored by the Howard University Social Justice Consortium. Friday the 22nd offers a plenary on Florida’s own A. Phillip Randolph featuring Chair, Lionel Kimble, Omar EatonMartinez, Mark Anthony Neal, and Andre E. Johnson. Saturday the 23rd is a discussion of “Black Women Resistance” featuring presenters Ula Y. Taylor, Jasmin A Young, Blair LM Kelley, Natanya Duncan, and Robyn C. Spencer. As the largest African American learned society in America, we take special exception to the series of bills and laws passed by the state legislature in Florida such as the Stop W.O.K.E. Act, and will be offering luncheons that feature speakers who are part of the struggle for “the right to learn” including Kimberlé Crenshaw, Kaye Wise Whitehead, Yohuru Williams, Khalil Gibran Muhammad, and Hasan Kwame Jeffries. You don’t want to miss this year’s John Blassingame Luncheon on Saturday, the 23rd, which will feature Guest Speaker, Lonnie Bunch, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and James Grossman, Executive Director of the American Historical Association. Dulaney continues, “Florida is ground zero to roll back the gains of the 1960s as a model for other states to follow. Radical changes and extremism are happening more and more each day. People of African descent across the globe have been relentless in standing for liberation and against racism in the struggle for an inclusive democracy, freedom, and equity in order to not be left behind resulting from white supremacists ideology. This is a battle which all concerned persons and groups must go to the front lines to defend the value of Black History, Black Studies, and educators for generations to come in the fight for justice, equality, and equity.”

COMPASS MARKS FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF HELPING HIV PROGRAMS

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Gilead COMPASS Initiative®, a 10-year, more than $100 million commitment to addressing the HIV epidemic in the Southern United States. The COMPASS (Commitment to Partnership in Addressing HIV/ AIDS in the Southern United States) program was born after a 2017 tour throughout the U.S. South with people affected by HIV. Gilead determined from listening to and learning from local community leaders that to end the epidemic in the region, investments into combating HIVrelated stigma, improving community access to and quality of resources, and increasing local leadership and advocacy were essential. Since its origin, the Gilead COMPASS Initiative has worked closely with and provided funding to nearly 400

community-based organizations across 16 states in the U.S South that address these health inequities and other barriers to care. The program has trained more than 26,000 individuals in leadership development, and in total the program has reached more than 300,000 people through its programming and in-person events. Among the COMPASS grantees is Community Health PIER (CH PIER), which is located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, a region grappling with high HIV prevalence and stigmatization. The organization is working to confront health disparities in the local LGBTQ+ community with a holistic approach to health and wellness, peer support and resources to support healthy choices. “Whether you want to hear about heart health, living healthy with HIV or information about having a small

garden in your backyard, you can get that all here,” says Gloria Sturdevant, co-founder of CH PIER, adding that they provide a host of individualized services for people who walk through their door. CH PIER is one of five grantee organizations featured in a five-part video series focusing on COMPASS’s community partners. SALUTE TO HBCU’S Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily

Alabama leads the nation with the number of HBCUs (13), followed by North Carolina (11), then Georgia (10). HBCUs reflect the epitome of Black history, culture and pride. Directed by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz, this film will offer a tender, intimate portrait of the billionaire writer, actor, filmmaker, studio head and media mogul according to a release. “Perry is America’s consummate multi-hyphenate, but underneath this entertainment behemoth is a man working humbly to heal his childhood trauma by transforming his pain into promise,” the release continues. His inspiring story will begin streaming on Prime Video on November 17th. The connections to Perry’s roots begin with the title, which is a nod to Perry’s late mother Willie Maxine Perry. From there, the film, which serves as a “profound lesson on remembering where you came from to know where you want to go,” dives deep into

Perry Studios, as well as directing episodes of Perry’s BET shows. Ortiz has previously said that watching Perry’s work ethic in action has inspired him to work harder as well. “If he’s going to go 18-hour days, I have to go 20 hours,” he says. “It pushes you to be better than what you are because T.P. is not working for himself — he’s working for the people around him.”
