COMMUNITY CONGRESSIONAL SWEARING IN CEREMONY HELD

Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) issued the following statement following her community swearing-in ceremony last night:

“It was an honor to be sworn-in to the 118th Congress surrounded by loved ones and this beautiful community I am blessed serve in Washington. Each member of our community has a role in not only my success, but in making this community stronger. Each day I am fueled by this community’s support and genuine care for the commongood. I am proud of our movement

and am committed to doing the good work to bring equity back to Texas’ 30th Congressional District.

I’m especially thankful for our House Democratic leadership – House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Whip Katherine Clark – who traveled to Dallas to support the good people of North Texas and to experience the beauty of this district. I remain steadfast in my dedication to ensuring the needs of this community are at the forefront of my work. This is only the beginning.”

RACIAL EQUITY APPLAUDED BY HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

Maya Wiley, President and CEO of The Leadership on Civil and Human Rights, released the following statement on President Biden’s Executive Order on Racial Equity:

“We applaud the Biden administration’s clear commitment to advancing and protecting civil and human rights for all communities. At a time when civil rights are under attack from forces that seek to turn back the clock on the important strides this country has made and many Americans fear the weakening of our democracy, every act of government to protect our civil

rights is criticaally important. We have seen critical executive orders from this administration that take seriously the idea that the federal government must play an active role in ensuring that all have access to opportunity. The order’s focus on appropriate staffing on equity issues, addressing bias in algorithms and artificial intelligence, and promoting data equity and transparency are all vital steps forward. But executive orders are only as strong as their implementation. We will continue to work on the full implementation of this and all civil rights executive orders as soon as possible.”

HUMANITIES NAACP JOINS BROOKHAVEN CHAPTER AGAINST WASTE TRANSFER STATION

NAACP Brookhaven Chapter President

Dr. Georgette Grier-Key, joined by NAACP NYS Conference President Dr. Hazel Dukes, today called on the State Legislature to reject the latest attempts by Winters Bros. and its Republican allies in Brookhaven to build the largest waste transfer station in New York State history in a potential Environmental Justice Area without seeking local zoning approval.

Republican Assemblyman Joe DeStefano and Republican Senator Dean Murray have introduced legislation (A05365 and S05215) to trample on a conservation easement in Brookhaven to make it easier for Winters Bros. to build and operate its massive and unnecessary waste transfer facility – which the company has said it intends to build without seeking local zoning approvals by securing a federal waiver of local rules.

“Republicans don’t go rogue in Brookhaven – not if they expect party support for their elections. So when Brookhaven Republicans in Albany line up to support Winters. Bros plans, we know it’s because their leader –Supervisor Ed Romaine – has given his tacit if not direct approval,” Dr. GrierKey said “This is just another attempt by Supervisor Romaine and his cronies on the Town Board trying to avoid taking any responsibility for quietly allowing Winters Bros. to build this massive facility. We killed this bill in Albany once and we will kill it again, and we will hold Supervisor Romaine to account for sending his allies in Albany to do Winters’ bidding once again.”

In the 2021 legislative session, Assemblyman DeStefano introduced similar legislation to trample on

conservation easements to support Winters Bros. plans but withdrew the legislation after pressure from the NAACP made clear the bill would never win approval in Albany.

“It’s time for Winters Bros. to stop playing games and trying to make an end run around the community to build its massive dump in a potential

(STB) because it would ship the waste off Long Island by rail. The STB has the power to waive local zoning laws if it decides a project is “rail related,” completely cutting out the Town Zoning Board. Currently the property is not zoned for a waste transfer facility.

In addition, Winters Bros. also falsely claims that Long Island faces a waste

simply worked with the Long Island Railroad and won the approvals they needed.

Second, the two new facilities when fully built will be able to handle nearly 1.3 million tons of construction and demolition waste every year – almost double the amount of similar waste now going into the landfill. The landfill will continue to take ash waste from the burning of household garbage through 2026 and neither the newly permitted facilities nor Winters Bros. is seeking to accept ash waste.

Yet Winters Bros. continues to claim its proposed facility – which would accept 6,000 tons a day from more than 350 trucks every day six days a week for a total capacity of more than 1.8 million tons a year – is needed to solve a socalled “crisis” on Long Island. In fact, Winters Bros. plans to consolidate four existing facilities it operates into the proposed facility – and bring about 1,000 tons they currently accept. That leaves 5,000 tons a day that Winters Bros. would need to accept to make its plans work.

Environmental Justice Area,” Dr. Dukes said. “The NAACP has blocked Winters Bros. in Albany and we will block them in Washington too. There is no getting around the community, and it’s time that Winters Bros. – and Supervisor Romaine and his allies – accept that reality.”

Winters Bros. has peddled a false narrative for years in a weak effort to convince stakeholders that it must seek a federal waiver of local zoning from the federal Surface Transportation Board

crisis with the closure of the Brookhaven Town landfill in late 2024 so its facility should win easy approval. The facts make clear this narrative is also completely false.

First, two new waste transfer facilities in Brentwood and Medford have been fully permitted by the state Department of Environmental Conservation – the Medford facility was approved just this month – that will export waste by rail. Neither facility needed nor sought STB approval to access the rail lines. They

“We know Winters Bros. plans to make Brookhaven the home of NYC garbage – there is nowhere else to get the trash to fill its capacity and make the project work financially,” Dr. Grier-Key said.

“That is the dirty secret they refuse to admit – but don’t deny – and it’s exactly why they want to avoid this conversation in front of the Town Zoning Board Winters Bros. needs to stop the lies and face the community if it wants to build anything here. It’s also time for Supervisor Romaine to call out Winters Bros. and stand with the community – loudly and proudly in public – and end the backroom dealing with this disingenuous company.”

CONTEMPORARY JAZZ ARTIST RELEASES ‘ AFRICA RISING ’

“AFRICA RISING” is the fifth release from noted smooth jazz sax leader ANDRE WARD on the Gallery Entertainment/ Orpheus Enterprises label. The Chicago native brings together originals and remakes, each with their own distinct flavor. From the hip-hop flavored single, “Casualty Of Love” (with vocalist K’Jon), to the upbeat, brassy remake of Stevie Wonder’s “Do I Do.” Andre covers many musical palates.

Born and raised in the Windy City, Andre cites his hometown’s longtime jazz and R&B legacy as an inspiration for his music and career. “My favorite band will always be Earth Wind & Fire, which was founded by Maurice White – who came out of Chicago with his brother, Verdine” says Ward “When they had the Phenix Horns and the departed Don Myrick on saxophone, that really motivated me to play the sax. I actually started out as a drummer then the trumpet until finally the alto sax – all thanks to an after school program that encouraged kids to learn to play musical instruments.”

Andre went on to Tennessee State University in Nashville, where he formed the quartet Act IV – which won a national contest sponsored by Budweiser to record a single “The Pulse.” From there he attended the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston – a city where he remains to this day. “My goal was to earn my degree from Berklee, then move on to NYC for gigs and session work,"

Andre explains. “However, what wound up happening is I was getting a lot of live music work, just in the Boston area alone! Plus, in 1990, fellow Berklee alum Lalah Hathaway invited me to be part of her touring band when she released her debut album on Virgin Records. This led to backing hit makers such as Will Downing, then Freddie Jackson for nine years – four of which as his touring band’s musical director.”

The time with Freddie Jackson resulted in Andre drawing attention from Hush Productions, with whom Jackson had his deal with Capitol Records Ward –“Hush started a partnership with Morgan Creek Records, where I recorded my first solo single, ‘Everything I Do (I Do For You)' – a remake of Bryan Adams’ #1 pop hit. My version was a smash on the smooth jazz charts but then Morgan Creek was shut down soon after. So for the next few years I became a music educator in the Boston public school system. Fast-forward, I was offered a deal from the Huggins brothers (Charles and Beau).”

Ward’s releases “Feelin’ You,” “Steppin’ Up” and “Crystal City” were all Top 10 Contemporary Jazz Albums with “Caution” going to #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts. “AFRICA RISING” will soon be joining the ranks. Andre pays tribute to the sound of Earth Wind & Fire with the tune “Secret Place” (with Chantel Hampton on vocals) and tips his hat to fellow Chicagoans the Emotions with his take on

their classic “Don’t Ask My Neighbors.” With the single, “Casualty Of Love” with singer/songwriter K’Jon – “We’ve been trying to work together for some time but he had commitments to fulfill for the label.

Finally, K’Jon sent over the instrumental track for ‘Casualty Of Love’ and I immediately liked it. What makes this song special is lyrically the story is about the belief of love on a positive note – which is missing in many new tunes out there now.

‘Casualty Of Love’ is about the benefits of love and how it makes life better…puts a positive spin on being a prisoner of love. Andre now has a new single from the “AFRICA RISING” release, a remake of Sade’s “Kiss of Life.” As to why taking on that 90’s classic – “Who doesn’t love Sade! Her catalog is full of wonderful gems and I wanted to give the song my own spin.”

It is Andre Ward’s hope that listeners will not only enjoy “AFRICA RISING” but will also find some hope and inspiration. “Africa is a force in the world which inspire those to have a vision and belief in positive things to come, to have hope for the future generations. Not only economically but as far as how driven folks from the motherland are in business and life,” exclaims Andre “As we as a people are still emerging from the pandemic, through my music we can look to Africa as a driving force to keep us moving forward in life.”

THE ARTS AILEY II RETURNS TO THE AILEY CITIGROUP THEATER

(Black PR Wire) NEW YORK —

Ailey II, the renowned second company to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, will return to its home, The Ailey Citigroup Theater, for a highly anticipated two-week season—the second led by Artistic Director Francesca Harper—featuring 14 exhilarating performances from March 22- April 2. The gifted ensemble of rising stars will treat audiences to two dynamic programs, Poetic Motion and Empowered, spotlighting works by Founder Alvin Ailey, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Artistic Director Robert Battle, William Forsythe, Francesca Harper, Andrea Miller, and former Ailey Company member Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish

For over four decades, Ailey II has merged the spirit and energy of the country’s best early-career dance talent with the passion and artistry of today’s most outstanding choreographers. Founded in 1974 as a bridge between The Ailey School and the professional dance world, the company embodies Alvin Ailey’s pioneering mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training, and community programs for all people.

“After a successful U.S. tour, I am thrilled for New York audiences to witness the grace, strength, and versatility of the Ailey II dancers that will bring joy to hearts and inspire,” said Artistic Director Francesca Harper “The two programs will highlight richly diverse works from treasured classics to contemporary favorites; there’s something for everyone.”

The Ailey Citigroup Theater engagement opens on Wednesday, March 22 at 7:30pm with Poetic Motion, dedicated to the heart of the creative process and the poetry that lives in the mind of an artist. The program showcases Elizabeth RoxasDobrish’s new work mediAcation, which explores relationships and the nuances of communication; new production of Alvin Ailey’s The Lark Ascending (excerpt), a lyric and romantic dance choreographed in 1972 to music by Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Romance for Violin and Orchestra; and two extended audience favorites Robert Battle’s Alleluia, a work that seamlessly

meshes the foot stomping and hand gestures of the Baptist Church with classical Baroque idioms; and William Forsythe’s Enemy in the Figure (excerpt), set to Thom Willem’s percussive and rhythmically driving electronic score, which is the source of the works choreographic invention and influenced the radical use of light and shadow in the original stage design. Poetic Motion highlights the full breadth of Ailey II’s expression that features the sensitivity of Mr. Ailey, the athleticism of Battle, the audacity of Forsythe, and the innovative mind of Roxas-Dobrish.

Empowered, a program designed to leave the audience on the edge of their seats, premieres on Thursday, March 23 at 7:30pm. From the cinematic wonderment of Andrea Miller’s Psūkhe (pronounced 'pSEEhee'), an energetic full company work featuring unexpected partnering and complex solos set to the electronic music of Nicolas Jaar; to the daring physicality of William Forsythe’s Enemy in the Figure; to the Afro-futuristic lens of Francesca Harper’s Freedom Series, the unexpected twists and turns take audiences on an evocative journey that awakens curiosity and encourages valiance.

The dancers of Ailey II come from near (Brooklyn natives Meagan King and Amar Smalls as well as Queens native Patrick Gamble) and far (Canadian company member Spencer Everett), and New Yorkers have 14 chances to see why The New York Times says, “There’s nothing like an evening spent with Ailey II.” Tickets starting at $59 are on sale now and can be purchased at www.alvinailey.org/aileyinnyc or by phone at 212-405-9082.

Ahead of the company’s engagement, all are invited to tap into their creativity during a Masterclass with Francesca Harper at Ailey Extension on Saturday, March 18 at 3pm. Throughout this contemporary ballet workshop Harper will teach dancers of all experience levels new creative tools to implement in their artistic process. Participants will learn to find pleasure in movement while refining their technique.

Let Ailey II’s performances inspire you to get moving this spring for FREE in one of Ailey Extension’s

“real classes for real people.”

Ailey’s Ticket to Dance promotion gives new and returning students a chance to trade their performance ticket for a complimentary dance or fitness class of their choice. With over 50 classes a week available in-studio and online in a wide variety of techniques such as hiphop, ballet, West African, NY Style Mambo, Pilates, and Horton—the signature technique seen in many of Alvin Ailey’s classic works—Ailey Extension makes dance accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. Ticket holders for Ailey II’s 2023 New York engagement have until July 31, 2023 to take advantage of this exclusive offer. Please visit alvinailey.org/extension to view the schedule of classes or to sign up and learn more about the program.

The upcoming New York season comes on the heels of the company’s U.S. tour and a recent welcome by Mayor Eric Adams and Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) Commissioner Laurie Cumbo to City Hall for the inauguration of an installation of 15 photographs documenting the Ailey Moves NYC! initiative. Hung in the City Hall rotunda, conference rooms, and workspaces throughout the executive side of the building, the photos depict the lively, free outdoor dance performances and classes reaching audiences in all of New York City’s five boroughs in summer 2022. The installation will remain on view for six months, marking the beginning of a broader initiative to celebrate the city’s diversity and bring artwork to city buildings across the boroughs.
