COMMENTARY

COOLER HEADS MUST PREVAIL

 By Kevan M. Abrahams Nassau County Legislature, Minority Leader

There is no disputing that the COVID-19 pandemic has been emotionally exhausting. I empathize with the frustration that so many are experiencing. However, as we approach what I pray is the end of the Omicron surge, it is not the time to hastily abandon masks or any other proven tool for preventing the spread of this virus.

Already, this chaos has resulted in troubling impacts on the well-being of our children. As a parent whose children are currently navigating education in the era of COVID-19, I have been horrified by reports from schools across Nassau County in which mask-wearing has become a flashpoint for confrontations, bullying and classroom disruptions. For months, we have all watched as school board meetings have become targets of violence and

IN

caustic rhetoric.

M A S K D E B AT E

It didn’t have to be that way. Unfortunately, far too many political figures in Nassau County and across our nation have put their own futures ahead of working in the interest of the common good of the communities we are so blessed to serve. Someday soon, the mandates will completely end. When that day

comes, I urge those who opposed mask mandates to remember the mantra of “personal choice” they preach and respect the personal choice of those who continue to wear masks. Kevan M. Abrahams, of Freeport, represents the First Legislative District in the Nassau County Legislature and serves as the Leader of the Minority Caucus.

Throughout the pandemic, I have been a strong supporter of the efficacy of mask-wearing in public settings as one leg of a multipronged approach for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Based on current trends, I am optimistic that conditions will continue to improve so that universal masking in schools can end after winter break and that no further public health directives will be necessary. It has always been my firm belief that public health policies must never be political - especially when it impacts the health and safety of our children. However, in recent weeks especially, it has been truly disheartening to witness the efforts by some to deliberately inject chaos into our society for the purposes of generating anger and confusion that they hope to selfishly exploit in the not-toodistant future. The Alliance for Coney Island is once-again holding an open call inviting local and regional artists to submit proposals to paint large-scale murals for the “The Coney Island for Everyone Mural Project.” This fourth round of beautification for the historic community continues our plans to add vibrancy to the neighborhood. This phase of the project, which is funded by a grant received from the New York City Department of Small Business Services through the Neighborhood 360 Program, will include gates on five businesses throughout the Coney Island Amusement District and Mermaid Avenue. The objective of the mural project is to liven up the urban landscape of the community with art that commemorates the unique history and culture of this iconic location that is visited by over 7 million people annually and home to 50,000 residents. Artists are encouraged to use historic imagery

Is it Alzheimer’s? Or just signs of aging? Get screened and find out.

If you have trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating or making decisions that affect everyday life, the sooner you can find out what’s going on, the better.

Early screening of what’s known as your cognitive health, allows for earlier detection and diagnosis of potential Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Early diagnosis means more time to plan for the future, express your preferences for care, adapt your home environment and seek support. Early diagnosis also provides opportunities to try new treatments that may help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms. We offer people who are experiencing possible early cognitive decline, the opportunity to participate in ongoing research studies/clinical trials that are focused on the early stage of this disease. Our Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease is one of 10 centers in New York State, funded in part by a grant from the New York State Department of Health.

To learn about available Alzheimer’s resources, research studies and clinical trials, or to participate in a free cognitive screening, call (631) 954-2323 or visit ceadlongisland.org.

HEALTHY BENEFITS OF LEMON WATER

Do you keep lemons handy and in supply at home? They provide several benefits and can be used in several ways, including combined with water. There are at least 10 benefits of lemon water to consider for implementing in your routine.

Is lemon water good for you?

Because lemons are nutritious with vitamin C and antioxidants, using lemons in water helps your body in many ways. Examples of these benefits of using lemon water include improving your digestive system, boosting your immune system, and fighting infections.

What does lemon water do to your body?

With the minerals that are in lemons, consuming a cup of lemon water can provide several effects on your body, targeting several issues that you might need lemon water to assist you in improving.

Ten (10) benefits of drinking lemon water

 Lemon water detox – Lemon water alone does not make a good detox but adding fiber to your lemon water can help serve as a detox that helps boost your energy, exercise performance, and mental health.  Lemon water for weight loss – The taste can encourage people to drink more – over plain water – due to the citrus and tart flavor; consuming it curbs the appetite and helps with binging on

sweets.  Lemon water for skin – Can hydrate, nourish, and revitalize the skin due to the nutrients and vitamin C in lemons. These improvements, along with flushing toxins, can reduce wrinkles and keep the skin healthy and supple.  Lemon water for blood pressure – Can regulate and lower blood pressure and maintain heart health due to the potassium in lemons.  Lemon water for bloating – Can stimulate healthy bowel function by reducing bloating and stimulating bowel movements.  Lemon water for kidneys – The citric acid in lemons can help break down calcium crystals that can build up into a small, hard mass that must be removed from the body, also known as kidney stones.  Lemon water for the liver – Can serve as a liver detox because lemons assist with removing toxins, which can cause many health issues over time if they accumulate in the blood. Too many toxins can contribute to aches, diarrhea, indigestion, nausea, and memory loss.  Lemon water for digestion – Can promote healthy digestion and ease constipation and gas if you drink a cup of it on an empty stomach.  Lemon water for the immune system – Can boost your immune function and electrolytes because of the vitamin C in lemons. You can add lemon juice, ginger root, and honey to a hot cup of water for an enhanced immune drink.

 Lemon water for fresh breath – Can alleviate bad breath caused by bacteria and lingering food particles in the mouth. The lemon water also stimulates the production of saliva to help flush the mouth and keep the mouth hydrated.

Disadvantages of drinking lemon water daily

Keep in mind that lemons contain acid, so excessive intake of lemon juice may cause tooth decay or enamel erosion. Other disadvantages include heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and other gastroesophageal reflux symptoms. It is important to consume lemon water in moderation, so sticking to a rule of ½ a lemon per cup is advised (experts say that the juice of two lemons per day, maximum, is healthy).

How to make lemon water

To start consuming lemon water regularly, use fresh lemons and start by combining ½ a lemon into ½ a cup of cold water and ½ cup of hot water. Squeeze the lemon juice from the lemon into the water and stir.

Lime water versus lemon water

If you want to switch it up on occasion, lime water is just as tasty as lemon water. Lemon water may be considered more beneficial since lemons have slightly more health benefits, but both are packed with antioxidants and minerals. So, drink up!

NUTRITIONAL ADVICE TO AVOID GLAUCOMA Eat right to protect your sight. That’s the advice of the Glaucoma Research Foundation, which offers its recipe for healthier eyes. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause progressive vision loss through damage to the optic nerve. It is the second-leading cause of blindness. It occurs five times more often in Blacks and about 10 years earlier in Blacks than other ethnic groups, according to the foundation. As with other health issues, good nutrition can make a difference for your eyes, the foundation notes.  FRUITS AND VEGGIES Fruits and veggies are good sources of vitamins A and C, as well as the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. These can protect against oxidative stress associated with damage to the optic nerve and other tissues of the eye in glaucoma. A study that included 584 Black women found that those who consumed three or more fruit or juice servings daily were 79% less likely to have glaucoma than those who had less than one  LEAFY GREENS Leafy greens are one of those veggies to focus on. Research has found a link between kale and spinach consumption and a reduced risk of glaucoma,

according to the foundation. Eating leafy greens is also linked to lower rates of inflammation, cancer, heart disease and even the eye disorder macular degeneration.

 TEA And have a cuppa while you’re at it. A study in the British Journal of Ophthalmology found that people who drank at least one cup of hot tea daily

 NUTS AND SEEDS Nuts and seeds are good sources of vitamin E, which is important for keeping cells healthy and protecting them from the free radical damage that can break down protective retinal tissues, the foundation notes.  FISH The foundation also suggests fish, particularly salmon, tuna, sardines and halibut have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to lower glaucoma-related eye pressure.

lowered their glaucoma risk by 74% compared to those who did not. The foundation also suggests adding chocolate, bananas, avocados, pumpkin seeds and black beans to your diet for their health benefits.  WHICH FOODS SHOULD YOU AVOID? People who are already living with glaucoma should avoid foods that contribute to metabolic syndrome, obesity, blood pressure problems, and diabetes. A diet that helps maintain normal blood pressure and blood sugar helps reduce glaucoma risk, the

foundation says. Eating a healthy number of calories, and limiting carbohydrates may also have benefits for the eyes.  HOW TO PROTECT YOUR EYES According to the CDC, you can take the following steps to help protect your eyes and lower your risk of vision loss from glaucoma:  If you are in a high-risk group, get a comprehensive dilated eye exam to catch glaucoma early and start treatment. Prescription eye drops can stop glaucoma from progressing. Your eye care specialist will recommend how often to return for follow-up exams. Medicare covers a glaucoma test once a year for people in high-risk groups.  Even if you are not in a high-risk group, getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam by the age of 40 can help catch glaucoma and other eye diseases early.  Open-angle glaucoma does not have symptoms and is hereditary, so talk to your family members about their vision health to help protect your eyes—and theirs.  Maintaining a healthy weight, controlling your blood pressure, being physically active, and avoiding smoking will help you avoid vision loss. These healthy behaviors will also help prevent type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions.

HE ALTH BENEFITS (BlackPRWire) If you are not familiar with probiotics, then you might want to keep reading…probiotics offer plenty of health benefits. Upon discovering that they are bacteria, you might think that probiotics sound bad instead of good, but do not fret. Probiotics are not harmful to the body as you might believe. They are actually quite beneficial for women and our health. What are probiotics? Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts – also known as microorganisms – often called “good” bacteria. Yes, they are good bacteria that help us in managing our health if consumed. When consumed regularly, probiotics are especially good for your digestive system and keeping your gut healthy. The probiotics help send food through your gut when affecting nerves that control gut movement. The many types of bacteria are classified as probiotics, and they provide various benefits. They are present in fermented foods and supplements. What do probiotics do for women? Probiotics should become a regular part of your diet, especially if you’re a woman. An area that is specific to women, fertility, can benefit greatly from probiotics. For women, having a good ratio of certain strains can improve the odds of conceiving. Of course, discuss with your OBGYN for suggestions on what probiotics are best. Fertility is not the only area of focus for

women that draws us to probiotics, but overall vaginal health is improved with implementing probiotics into our routines. Best probiotics for vaginal health: Another area that is specific to women is vaginal health and the treatment of vaginal infections. Probiotics can balance out the vaginal microbiome, which wards off bacterial vaginosis, urogenital infections,

are probiotics that help balance out the pH level of the vagina. Our bodies are made to naturally maintain a balance of acidity and alkalinity, so pH balance is important for how our bodies function. The probiotics help improve certain effects if our pH balance is off, such as reducing vaginal odor and itching as a result of restoring the vagina’s pH to its normal balance.

and vaginal yeast infections. According to studies, lactobacillus rhamnosus and lactobacillus fermentum are probiotics that can improve vaginal flora – the bacteria living inside the vagina – if taken daily. Best probiotics for women’s pH balance: When looking further at vaginal health, there

Again, strains of lactobacillus are shown to improve your pH balance, as well as Bifidobacterium. Best probiotics for women’s weight loss: Lactobacillus and bifidobacterium strains are also good for reducing belly fat and weight loss. Probiotics affect appetite and energy

usage. In fighting obesity, studies show that probiotics may assist in the release of appetite-regulating hormones and increasing levels of fat-regulating proteins. Best probiotics for women’s overall health: We’ve gone over the women-specific health areas and how important probiotics are in maintaining health in those areas, but they are beneficial for the overall health of everyone. There are probiotics that help with maintaining overall health, including the health of your organs, immune system, and your skin. Saccharomyces boulardii, a yeast found in probiotics, for instance, helps fight digestion and diarrhea. Lactobacillus, the most common probiotic, is known to help with digestion, including helping those who may have difficulty digesting lactose – the sugar in milk. It can also help with diarrhea. Lactobacillus can be found in yogurt and other fermented foods, such as kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut. Bifidobacterium, found in some dairy products, can ease various conditions, including symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Besides fermented foods, probiotic supplements are an option, but there are so many strains that offer various benefits. If you are interested in probiotic supplements, visit your doctor to get suggestions on the best strains to meet your needs.

START YOUR NEW YEAR WEIGHT LOSS PLAN What most personal trainers will say is the key to working out is to start. You’ve got to begin to be great. But many of us don’t want to start exercising (or stop) because we don’t know what really works or how to begin in the first place. Beginning an exercise program can be very overwhelming– even painful if you aren’t careful. So we’ve created a few key areas (and even a sample workout) that will help ANYONE get a good workout in and lose your first 20 pounds.  WA RM -UP Warming your body up prior to exercise is very important for your health (and safety) and will also help you enjoy your workouts more. Warming up for 5-10 minutes will raise your body temperature and prepare your cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous systems for the demands of exercise by slowly increasing the blood circulation to and from your heart and muscles. Warming up helps your connective tissues better handle the stress of exercise, decreasing your chance of injury. Connective tissue is similar to hard plastic; if you don’t warm-up plastic it won’t be flexible, and is much more likely to “break.” Proper warm-ups (and cool downs) also help reduce the severity of soreness in the next day or two following your workout. The increased blood flow helps deliver more oxygen to the muscles and gets rid of the waste products that contribute to soreness. Increased blood flow also helps bring more fuel to your body, resulting in better performance. Warm-up with a low-impact exercise at a slower, more comfortable pace than your actual workout. Warm-up exercises like biking, an elliptical machine, walking, or rowing allow your body to warm up with

10 | NewYorkTrendnyc

limited stress to your joints.  PAC E YOU R SEL F Another reason for soreness is trying to do too much too soon. Don’t try to make up for lost time. Start out with a few exercises and slowly progress. Your body will gradually adapt to the increased stress. If you are starting resistance training for the first time, try picking 1-2 exercises for each area of the body – the upper body, lower body, and core. Also, take into consideration the anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts of the body. For example, if you pick two core exercises, you might try bicycle crunch for the abdominals (front of the body) and lumbar extension for the lower back (posterior part of the body).  C H O O S I N G T H E R I GH T W EI GH T L OSS E X E RC I S E P ROGR AM If your form breaks down before the last 1020% of your repetitions then you are using too much weight and you still need to be fighting to keep that form solid for those last few movements as well. Here’s a SAMPLE WEIGHT LOSE EXERCISE PROGRAM (Alternate workouts each week, 3 times a week):

3 sets of 8-10 reps. 2 minutes rest between sets.

If you are a beginner to aerobic training, start out with something like walking that raises your heart rate a little bit, nothing that will get you too out of breath. Try doing this for 10 minutes the first few times you exercise, slowly progressing the duration of the workout. If you’ve increased the time to a point where you can handle 30 minutes at that pace, start building a little more intensity. For example, you could attempt 2 or 3 days of 30 minutes each at your initial pace, followed by a 10-minute day at an increased intensity.  MON I T OR YOU R EN ERGY L EVEL Another area of frustration for the beginner is energy level. Most people expect to exercise the first few weeks and experience a shot of energy. In actuality, the opposite often occurs. Your body isn’t used to the added stress, which causes you to feel fatigued and even drained, especially if you overdo it. Don’t get discouraged; it’s

natural to feel this way until your body adapts. As your body acclimates itself, your cardiovascular system will become more conditioned, causing you to have more energy and focus throughout the day. Your efforts will pay off.

 UNDERS TAND HOW T O DEAL WITH SORENESS

Overexertion will trigger stiffness and soreness, causing many people to give up on exercise completely. If you do overdo it, there are a few things you can do to feel better. Exercise actually breaks your muscles down – sleep, nutrition, and hydration play a vital role in their recovery. Proper rest, refueling your body with healthy food, and drinking plenty of water will help you recover much more quickly. In the days that follow, doing a low impact exercise at a low to moderate intensity and stretching will deliver more oxygen and blood to help clean out the waste and bring more nutrients to your muscles.

Harlem Fashion Week is honored to pay homage to his legacy with the presentation of the Andre Leon Talley “Kaftan Couture” Exhibition.
