Keechant Sewell has made history as the first African American woman to be sworn in as NYPD’s police commissioner. This is also the first time a woman of any nationality has ever led the nation’s largest police department in its 176-year history. “I’m truly honored to be the 45th New York City Police Commissioner,” Keechant, who is 49-years old, took to Twitter after the oath-taking ceremony. “This oath reflects my deep commitment to our great city – and the individuals who are ranked as New York’s Finest. I’m privileged to be here and ready to work!” Keechant, who is a Queens native, served in the Nassau County Police Department for nearly 25 years where she played key roles in narcotics, major cases, and hostage negotiation. She was promoted as the chief of detectives in September

Now, she inherits the police department which has been struggling with the increase of gun and violent crime for years while also dealing with the influx of new infections with the omicron variant of the coronavirus. Moreover, Keechant is set to oversee New York City’s 35,000 police officers, significantly larger than her previous role of overseeing a staff of approximately 350. She also promised to further diversify the force.

police captain, had promised to appoint a female police commissioner during his campaign. She is only the third Black person to lead the NYPD after Benjamin Ward and Lee Brown, who served in the 1980s and the 1990s.

“I bring a different perspective, committed to making sure the department looks like the city it serves and making the decision, just as Mayor-elect Adams did, to elevate women and people of color to leadership positions,” she said when her appointment was announced, according to the Associated Press.

EX-DETROIT MAYOR OPENS NEW BUSINESS VENTURE Kwame Kilpatrick, the former Detroit mayor who was convicted and sentenced to years in prison for federal corruption, has started a new business. Despite having been released from prison, Kilpatrick reportedly still owes the city of Detroit and the IRS more than $4.7 million. Kilpatrick says his new venture is called Movemental Ministries, and will include Saturday services, Bible studies, and workshops. “It’s a virtual ministry, so we’ll be everywhere,” Kilpatrick said about his recent venture, which started from prison when he got an idea from a book he was reading at that time, according to Deadline Detroit. Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28

years in prison after being convicted of 24 federal felony counts. He only served over 7 years of his sentence because then-President Donald Trump granted his early release from prison. With his rough past, Kilpatrick said he hopes he could use it to reach more people to spread his message. “The craziest thing is that’s exactly what Movemental is about,” Kilpatrick told Fox2 Detroit. “That is my heartbeat. Be authentic. I’ve been what you’ve been through, I’ve smoked before, I drank, we know some of the issues I’ve had in the public press, but I don’t do any of that now and it’s not because I got perfect. It’s because I’m at truth.”

80 percent of violence occurs, even as the Public Safety Units continue their lifesaving work. In doing this, we will avoid mistakes of the past. These officers will be identifiable as NYPD, they will have body cameras, and they will have enhanced training and oversight. We will also expand the partnership between the NYPD and New York State Police. We are already working with Governor Hochul’s Public Safety team on reducing gun violence, sharing critical law enforcement data, and supporting the Interstate Gun Tracing Consortium.

There are no gun manufacturers in New York City. Yet, even as the NYPD removed over 6,000 guns from our streets last year, we know that new guns are arriving by car, by bus and by train every day. The NYPD will work with state law enforcement to implement spot checks at entry points like Port Authority and other bus and train stations. We will also move forward on using the latest in technology to identify problems, follow up on leads, and collect evidence. From facial recognition technology to new tools that can spot those carrying weapons, we will use every available method to keep our people safe.

We will also expand the Gun Violence Suppression Division. This highly specialized unit within the Detectives Bureau is tasked with seizing illegal guns and building cases against gun sellers and weapons traffickers. And we will continue the Gun Violence Strategic Partnership, a daily meeting that brings together local, state, and federal leaders to share intelligence and information on specific cases. And finally, my administration will increase coordination and information-sharing with the ATF, FBI, and all our federal partners.

Gun violence is not only a law enforcement issue. It is a social issue, a community issue, and we will be taking a citywide approach to meeting this challenge. New Yorkers have heard me say many times that any effective plan to reduce gun violence must include intervention AND prevention. We must take actions to immediately stop the violence, and we must make long-term investments to keep it from returning. We must address the root causes of these challenges and help our young people on a better path long before they pick up a gun.

Dare to engage this important message—an in-depth perspective on the intervening fight to preserve the freedom, truth, and justice of American democracy. It speaks clearly to crucial issues and consequences when errant and oppressive political practices collide with theology. Even though more than a year has passed since the insurrection of January 6, 2021, there is yet little doubt that the political oppression of anti-democracy forces in the nation have not abated but have intensified. The spirit and strategies of Trumpism proponents continue to permeate the society, threatening our democratic governing values, traditions, and institutions. Ex-President Trump and his advocates of Trumpism told the “Big Lie” of a “rigged” election, incited the insurrection, and continue to foment the current crisis in American democracy. Adherents to Trumpism show an insatiable greed for political power and collectively evince implicit biases for white racial supremacy. They refuse to renounce the failed attempt to subvert the government. As political oppressors they further incriminate themselves by speaking against and refusing to fully cooperate with the January 6 Commission that is investigating the insurrection attack on the nation’s Capitol. Trumpism loyalists openly challenge the authority and hearings of this U.S. Select Committee, downplaying the arrest and prosecution of hundreds of the insurrectionists. Further, they do so despite the Commission’s early findings that have uncovered sufficient evidence to file the more serious charge of “seditious conspiracy” against eleven insurrectionists for their mobaction against the nation’s government. Fear grips elected officials within this sociopolitical stream—fears of threats and reprisals from Trump and his Trumpism enforcers. Their fears have debilitated these politicians from telling the truth and acting civilly as responsible citizens and honorable elected representatives. These defiant oppressors persistently spread the “Big Lie” and other falsehoods, despite the serious repercussions

of a disinformation campaign whose effects are eroding the nation’s civil, political, multiracial, and multicultural integrity; their unrighteous practices are degenerating the moral ethos of the nation. Trumpism supporters have given a slap in the face to American citizens by stringently opposing and blocking voting rights—the pillar of democracy. Their partisan schemes to sabotage or subvert fair democratic processes—by electing state and local officials who can overturn voting results in targeted areas—is unsettling, and sickening. Obviously, Trumpism adherents

manifest themselves as defiant perpetrators of oppression. Politically and socially destabilizing effects of Trumpism raise crucial and disturbing questions: At what cost will Trumpism’s defiant oppressors continue to stoke political chaos, and violence? How close is the United States on the verge of experiencing civil disintegration and the implosion of American democracy? What dire consequences must the nation confront to preserve its freedom from the extreme ideology of Trumpism anti-democracy? What kind of mindset makes Trumpism operatives foolishly believe they can personally escape paying the mounting charges for their political malfeasance? How is it possible for

them to avoid reaping the painful cost of their destructive behaviors when the time to settle eventually comes due? Rev. Dr. McCray writes with the courage of the “Watchman” who answers the people’s perturbing question “What of the night?” (cf. Isaiah 21:11). He spiritually wrestles with the looming consequences of the nation’s pressing political crisis and offers a telling theological perspective on the oppressive political stratagem of anti-democracy. Photographer, visual artist, veteran, community advocate, and father of three—those are just a few words that describe Miami-born Roscoé B. Thické III. Starting Feb. 10 through May 15, audiences will have the opportunity to view his impressive work at Oolite Arts where Thické will debut his first solo exhibition, ORDER MY STEPS: There are no answers here, move on. Curated by Rosie Gordon-Wallace, the exhibition highlights a narrative rich body of work, centered around the Pork ‘n’ Beans Projects in Liberty City. Thické’s ongoing body of work, titled “1402 Pork N Bean Blue at The Intersection of Two Deaths” chronicles the lifespan of the housing project where he grew up and that of his late grandmother. The images explore place as a way to remember and honor the life and legacy of both. For Thické, photography begins with investigation. He says “The narratives are built out of asking questions and trying to capture the preciousness of memory, because we know nothing is permanent. This show features several bodies of work that all were created with the intent of honoring and remembering. For me, having grown up in this place with these people, I knew I had to memorialize what was beginning to disappear right in

TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldier's and Sailors' Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County's Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser's rights with respect to the lien(s) the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The rate of interest and penalty which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid.
