PROTECT YOUR MONEY AND YOUR INFORMATION The pandemic has accelerated identity theft – and the impact on regular people is significant. In fact, Americans have lost more than $382 million to scams related to stimulus checks and unemployment benefits. Even worse, Black and Latino consumers are more likely to be victims of fraud than their white counterparts. That’s why it’s crucial to recognize activity designed to steal your hard-earned money.

We sat down with Wayne Davis, community manager from the Mt. Vernon Chase branch on 22 W 1st Street, to discuss tips and best practices for securing a better financial future.

New York Trend: What should consumers be looking for when it comes to scammers?

Wayne Davis: Phishing is the fancy name for emails pretending to be from reputable companies – including banks. They’re really from criminals who are trying to get your personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers. So, be very careful about clicking on a link in an email; instead go directly to the company’s website. And don’t click on attachments unless you’re sure it’s from someone you know and trust.

New York Trend: Are there specific signs to look for?

Wayne Davis: Scammers will often tell you there is a problem or a prize. They might say you are in trouble with the government, you owe money or someone in your family has an emergency. After setting up the problem or prize, scammers will pressure you to act immediately. No legitimate business or government agency will pressure you in this way or ask for your personal information over the phone or email.

New York Trend: How can consumers protect their money and their information?

Wayne Davis: Here are few best practices: • Create a separate password for each financial institution. This provides an additional level of protection in case there is an issue at one institution.

• Monitor your accounts. Log into your accounts frequently – even daily – through online banking or on your mobile banking app to monitor transactions and your account balance. Look for transactions you don’t recognize and check your monthly statements. If there’s an issue, contact your bank right away.

• Check your credit report. At least once a year, read through your credit reports carefully. You can request a free annual credit report from each of the three national credit reporting agencies, even if you don’t suspect any unauthorized activity on your account. Visit www.annualcreditreport.com.

NEWS NEW PLAN TO ADDRESS HEALTH INEQUALITIES IN MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITIES BodiMetrics has announced several new initiatives that address health inequality in the wearable medical technology industry and increase multicultural communities’ awareness of the implicit racial bias in commercial pulse oximeters. SUMMER FINANCIAL LITERACY CAMP OFFERED ONLINE Junior Wallstreeters, Inc. a non-profit, is excited to provide an online youth summer camp. The camp is great for preventing learning loss and offers a fun environment for students to learn financial and investing concepts.

The camps will teach students lifelong financial education skills and discipline through 10 lessons with an emphasis on African American history and culture. In the season premiere, a woman fears losing her foot after walking on a broken tibia for 10 years, golf ball-sized bunions may prevent another woman from ever running again, and a man is dealing with intense foot pain after his big toe was transplanted to his hand.

Other cases featured during the season will include a woman whose feet have grown horns, three sisters who are all suffering from various foot fungi, a man whose foot looks like a hobbit foot, growing to twice its size due to a case of gout, and a woman with a severe case of webbed feet where only a unique treatment using fish scales in conjunction with surgery can help.

Through it all, the three doctors graciously handle each patient in hopes of giving them pain-free lives.

Pam Oliver, the nation’s highestprofile African American female sports broadcaster, is the voice actor of a historic documentary about Black athletes, coaches and sports auxiliary members who competed during the Jim Crow segregated years in Georgia. The documentary, As If We Were Ghosts, airs June 13th and Juneteenth 2022, on Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB), the third-largest PBS station in the U.S. Veteran FOX Sports Analyst Oliver provides narration and select reenactments for the film, As If We Were Ghosts. The epic documentary is produced by Georgia-based Ours Studios LLC, which commissioned renowned independent filmmaker, Monty Ross, to become the senior producer. Airing on all GPB stations in Georgia, the documentary will reach approximately 3.4 million households.

“They didn’t do anything wrong. Yet, they were ignored and invisible by society’s accepted standards. Yet, they accomplished their strongest, swiftest, and highest athletic goals,” said the award-winning sports journalist.

BLACK ARCHIVES WELCOMES NEW LEAD ARCHIVIST The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc., a photographic and manuscript archival research repository in a community setting dedicated to documenting the history of Black Miami from 1896 to the present, welcomes Elaysha Bazil as the lead archivist. Bazil was previously employed with Broward County Public Schools and comes to the Black Archives with experience in archives, museums, and education from Bethune-Cookman University.

While studying in Bethune-Cookman University, Bazil worked as an intern in the Archival Center at the Mary McLeod Bethune Home, as well as a Museum Docent. As an educator, Bazil served as the Peer Learning Community Captain for the 6th grade social studies curriculum for Millennium Collegiate Academy located in Tamarac, FL. Ms. Bazil will be leading the organization’s archival department, with her main duties including processing collections, managing archival donations and research requests, and overseeing IMLS grant activities. “I am overjoyed to be working at the Black Archives, and I am eager to utilize and build upon my current skillset while working in this capacity,” said Bazil. “The best is yet to come, and this is only the beginning.”

In 2021, the Black Archives was awarded a $250,000 Museum Grant for African American History & Culture by the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) to build capacity and

conduct a major digitization project of its periodicals collections, and to expand public access to its collections by migrating to a new web-based collections management software.

“We are happy to welcome Ms. Bazil to the Black Archives as lead archivist,” said Timothy A. Barber, Black Archives Executive Director. “As an HBCU graduate with archival and museum experience, she brings with her a level of authenticity and understanding that is essential to the execution of our mission. Her energy and background will only further strengthen our team.”
