STARTING AND GROWING A SMALL BUSINESS IN NEW YORK Ever dreamed of owning your own business? If so, you’re not alone.

You’re among more than 60% of Americans with the same aspiration.

The good news is, there are resources to support you in making that dream your reality. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate toll on Black-owned businesses, but it’s also driven many companies to launch much-needed racial equity initiatives to support long-term recovery and economic growth in historically underserved communities.

Our team at JPMorgan Chase, for example, has set aside 15,000 loans and $2 billion in capital for Black and Latino businesses that have been left behind for too long.

Small businesses have the power to boost local economies, job creation and community development. But critical to their success is equipping small business owners with the capital, knowledge and tools necessary to start and develop a company.

Jumoke (Joy) Fagbayi-Butts, based in New York, talks about her experience supporting businesses owners and offers advice, lessons learned, and more about working with Black-owned businesses.

What’s the most important thing a first-time entrepreneur should know when starting a business?

Joy Fagbayi-Butts: A foundational understanding of what you’ll need for a successful business is a good place to start. In my experience, I’ve found there are a few driving factors that can help you succeed: 1. A reliable network: Having a mentor – or access to someone who’s done this before has been valuable for many of my clients.

Whether they’re asking questions, discussing ideas, or just offering general support, there are incredible champions right here in the local community. You can supplement a local strong support network with Chase workshops, panel discussions and summits, as well as our Chase for Business mailing list and social channels where you’ll find regular updates on networking and learning opportunities that are available. The Chase for Business offerings are great for both growing your knowledge of managing a business, as well as growing your network beyond your community.

2. A relationship with your banker: Banking is about relationships, so I encourage and welcome you to stop by a Chase branch or set up a digital appointment to begin cultivating one. We’re actively asking local Black entrepreneurs about their experiences and pain points, including questions like “What are your greatest barriers to financial success?” and “How can we help you overcome them?” The more we know about where you are struggling, the more we can help you find a solution.

3. Knowledge of operational tools: From digital payment systems to automated billing, there are countless tech-based software and service offerings available to simplify many aspects of managing a business. Digital media and marketing tools have also been game-changers for many of our clients as they look to reach and engage more customers.

4. Access to funding and loans: Starting a business costs money! Initial expenses can include everything from licenses to new equipment. Luckily, there are alternatives to covering these costs entirely on your own, like loans, grants, lines of credit and other capital set aside specifically for Black entrepreneurs.

Funding is so important, to your previous point. How do most business owners go about securing capital and what options are available to Black business owners, specifically here in New York?

Joy Fagbayi-Butts: In addition to the traditional options and types of capital I mentioned before, we’ve reserved low-cost loans specifically

for Black-owned businesses. Many small business owners right here in New York are able to secure loans fairly quickly by working with the team here at Chase. When you come in, just ask us about the process for securing the funding you need and we’ll walk you through all of your options – ranging from loans to lines of credit – including your eligibility and the pros and cons of each. We strive to present you with every option – even the ones you may have not originally thought were right for you – to give you all the information you need to make the right decision for yourself and your business.

You mentioned the importance of a strong network and supportive resources. Given disparities in business ownership among Black communities, what support do you offer that’s specifically tailored to address the unique needs of this community?

Joy Fagbayi-Butts: The Advancing Black Entrepreneurs platform was built in collaboration with Black Enterprise, National Urban League and other organizations that understand firsthand the challenges Black communities have faced when starting a business. Many of my clients have said that the site’s free educational courses, on-demand resources and networking events have been extremely helpful in building the foundation they needed to successfully navigate their small business’s journey. You don’t even need to be a Chase customer to access these free resources.

You brought up the many resources available through Advancing Black Entrepreneurs. Of the educational courses, resources and networking events, what are some of your clients’ recent favorites?

Joy Fagbayi-Butts: The last few years have been difficult – especially for Black-owned business, so many have appreciated the content we’ve published on surviving the pandemic. Chase.com recently featured Shark Tank’s Daymond Johnson who discussed how Black business owners can navigate pandemic-driven problems. That webcast, along with the educational course on the same topic, offer some great advice – from the importance of bookkeeping to pivoting your business model and developing contingency plans.

NMAAHC PRESENTS ‘OUR AMERICAN STORY’

The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is proud to present the next page from Our American Story, an online series for Museum supporters. We offer these stories to honor and celebrate the African American experience, share an immensely rich history and culture, and inspire and sustain our community as we move toward the future together.

The Second Great Awakening, an early 19th-century religious revival in the United States, marked an era of transformation for America and a new path forward for Jarena Lee. Born into a free Black family in Cape May, New Jersey, in 1783, Lee navigated the intense religiosity and social reformation of her time to emerge as the nation’s first African American woman preacher and the first woman to be recognized as an evangelist in the male-dominated African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church.

Lee’s journey to Christianity began when she moved to Philadelphia as a young adult in 1807. Like many Americans of her time, Lee struggled with changing cultural beliefs on human nature, morality, and the path to salvation. In search of answers, she sought out a personal connection to the gospel and heard the teachings of Bishop Richard Allen, a renowned preacher in Philadelphia. Inspired by his powerful sermons, Lee decided to join the church and get baptized.

But Lee’s journey of faith would be difficult.

Lee struggled to find a place for herself and her passion for the gospel within the maledominated church—a battle that brought on depression and even thoughts of suicide.

She also wrestled with the inherent conflict between her spirituality and a desire for “the vanities of this life.”

Despite these challenges, Lee remained determined to go beyond the church and share her faith in Christ with the world, a conviction that she carried back to New Jersey, where she moved with her new husband, Methodist Pastor Joseph Lee, in 1811. While in New Jersey, Lee was able to

She sprang into action, picking up where he left off, and presented her own testimony. Bishop Allen was so impressed by Lee’s preaching and boldness that he publicly endorsed her. She was soon permitted to

serve in an African Methodist congregation and nurture her faith—but she still couldn’t practice what she believed was her true calling: preaching.

Seven years into her marriage, Lee became a widow. The grief that followed her husband’s death only strengthened Lee’s conviction to “preach the word of God.” She returned to Philadelphia soon after, determined to advocate for women in the ministry.

Bishop Allen, who by then had founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church, initially refused to grant Lee permission to preach because of the church’s ban on female ministers. But Lee, driven by the intensity of her faith, began delivering sermons wherever

preach, and later became the first ordained woman preacher in the AME Church.

Lee’s evangelical career spanned multiple decades and intersected with her advocacy for equal rights and powerful leadership in the abolitionist movement. Lee also was the first African American woman to publish an autobiographical memoir, The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee, a Colored Lady, Giving an Account of Her Call to Preach the Gospel, which was first released in 1836.

“For as unseemly as it may appear now-adays for a woman to preach,” Lee wrote, “it should be remembered that nothing is impossible with God. And why should it be

thought impossible . . . or improper for a woman to preach?”

The relentless persistence of Jarena Lee, who died in 1864, helped break down barriers and pave the way for African American women to enter the ministry. Her achievements were especially remarkable, given that they occurred during a time when women’s contributions were often overlooked, ignored, or forgotten.

Like so many pioneers of her time, Lee’s story is one of resiliency, optimism, and spirituality—values that are deeply rooted throughout African American history and culture. Although Jarena Lee’s history is not widely known, her legacy as the first African American woman preacher represents an important example of women defying social barriers, transcending traditional gender roles, and touching the hearts, minds, and souls of many.

Westbury Arts is celebrating Women’s History Month with an exhibition of work expressing the theme Timeless—Tiempo Eterno, exploring Issues women face in society today, in the United States and Latin American countries, and a poetry reading and workshop with artist and author Rosalba Henao. The exhibition will be up for viewing Fridays: March 11, 18 and 25 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays March 12, 19 and 26 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m.

“Timeless—Tiempo Eterno” features work by women about women. Nancy Turetsky’s “The Distance She Traveled,” a painting incorporating family photographs, tells the story of her mother’s journey from her Orthodox Jewish home at age 18 to a secular life with her husband, Turetsky’s father.

Writing about her painting “Cake,” artist Patty Eljaiek says, “The expectation of women to be subservient has not changed.

Although these ideas seem quaint in 2022, we have not really come as far as we think we have.” Rosalba Henao’s “Original Power,” depicts in Eve in paradise and the serpent giving her power. Empowering pieces by several local and visiting artists will also be showcased.

Henao, who is also a writer who migrated to the US from Colombia in 2010, will read

her poetry in English and Spanish at the opening on Friday, March 4 from 6:30 to 9 pm held at the Westbury Arts gallery. Her workshop “My body, my dress,” on March 19, combines art and conversation as the women who attend reflect on their views of body image based on their culture and the media as they paint and draw.

Henao holds a master’s degree in education for art and sociocultural animation. The women-only workshop will be bilingual, English/Spanish, and participants must be over 17 years of age. Space is limited, participants must register to attend.

On Stage At Kingsborough (OSK) brings artistically and culturally diverse, multidisciplinary performances from masters of the form to the varied communities within and surrounding Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn.

From October to May, we present world class dance, cabaret, theatre, music, and family performances in the Leon M. Goldstein Performing Arts Center, and notable jazz musicians in an intimate and elegant nightclub setting with wine, cheese, and floor-to-ceiling ocean views as part of the Jazz At The Lighthouse series in Kingsborough’s Lighthouse. Its Hot Summer Nights! free outdoor concert series at Kingsborough’s Lighthouse bandshell takes place every Saturday evening in July.
