Michigan Senate Republicans introduced legislation that would drastically impact voting rights for all Michiganders. The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan (ACLU) opposes the bills in this package that include voter suppression tactics designed to make it harder to vote by absentee ballot and in-person on Election Day. These bills attack the guarantees that Michiganders overwhelmingly approved in 2018, when 80 of 83 counties passed a constitutional amendment that modernized our election system making it one of the most accessible in the nation. The ACLU will work with lawmakers on the policies to advance our constitutionally protected voting rights and improve the efficiency and integrity of our elections.

The historic record-breaking votes

cast in the 2020 Election shows that Michigan’s election system is working and is secure.

Today’s proposed legislation includes bills that will undermine this progress by:  adding a photo ID requirement for submitting an absentee ballot application;  enforcing strict photo ID to vote, and removing the right for eligible Michigan voters to sign an affidavit confirming their identity at the polls; and,  prohibiting pre-paid postage on absentee ballot envelopes for voters to submit their completed absentee ballot.

Rana Elmir, acting executive director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, has this reaction:

“For democracy to work for all of us, it must include us all. Throughout our history, we have fought to ensure that every eligible voter can cast their ballot and have it counted. But a handful of elected officials in Michigan and across multiple states want to take us backwards, ultimately making it harder for people to vote by creating

barriers to the ballot box, especially for the elderly, Black voters and other voters of color, and rural voters.

The 2020 Election was safe and secure and enabled historic voter turnout. We call on legislators to work with voters to continue to improve access to the ballot so that we can ensure our democracy continues to thrive.”

NYS & CORNELL UNIV CREATE TRAINING PROGRAM fOR CITIZEN HEALTH LEADERSHIP Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced the launch of a free, online Citizen Public Health Training Course for New Yorkers to learn about preparedness for and prevention of public health emergencies from top public health experts. This innovative course, delivered by the New York State Department of Health in partnership with Cornell University and supported by the State University of New York, will prepare and equip New Yorkers to become NYS Citizen Public Health Leaders and build an informed network of community health leaders across the state. Participants will learn about COVID-19, public health emergency preparedness and response, and other public health issues, while gaining insight into information and resources that will benefit their communities.

More information on the Citizen Public Health Training Program, including how to register to become a NYS Citizen Public Health Leader is available.

"When our state was ambushed

by COVID-19, New Yorkers rose to the occasion, supported each other and worked together to stop the spread," Governor Cuomo said. "Following the facts and the science has played a critical role in keeping the infection and hospitalization rates down across the state. Moving forward, it is critical that we are equipped with the tools and knowledge we need to protect ourselves, our families and our communities not just against COVID, but also against other public health emergencies that may arise in the future. The innovative Citizen Public Health Training Program will empower New Yorkers to become Public Health Leaders in the fight to defeat COVID once and for all and help us build a more resilient New York for the future."

This training, developed by Cornell University's Master of Public Health Program and delivered through eCornell, is a four-part online

training program to equip New Yorkers with expertise and tools to help build and support community-led initiatives surrounding prevention, detection and response in the event of public health emergencies. Upon completion of the training, participants will be designated a "NYS Citizen Public Health Leader" and will be informed about how they can volunteer in support of their local public health operations especially during emergencies - as well as how to find, use and share verified information about public health matters from reliable sources.

This program was first announced as part of the Governor's 2021 State of the State proposal. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, New Yorkers were asked to do their part to fight a virus

in ways they had never done before.

Everyone was given a crash course in virology, learning to properly wash their hands, sanitize their homes and businesses, and safely care for their family and neighbors. Thousands of New Yorkers signed up and were trained to be contract tracers, helping to track and mitigate the spread of the virus. When other states needed help, these New Yorkers heeded the call and brought their new public health skills to the rest of the country. This new training will help New Yorkers gain the tools to protect themselves, their families and others against future health emergencies.

Governor Cuomo said.

NE WS Historic Church To Appoint a BLACK JUSTICE to the All-White Chancery Court Pastor Blaine Hackett of historic St. John African Methodist Church, Inc. in Newark has joined Citizens for a Pro-Business Delaware’s (CPBD) calls to fill the vacancy of Chancery Court Chancellor Andre Bouchard with a Black justice. Pastor Hackett echoes the calls of legendary civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton in his recent letter to President Biden advocating for

increased diversity within the federal judiciary, and in Delaware.

“For too long in Delaware, and across the nation, our leadership

has not reflected the diversity of our congregations, our neighborhoods or our State,” said Pastor Blaine Hackett of St. John African Methodist Church, Inc. “The vacancy on the Chancery Court gives us yet another opportunity to advance Black leaders and support diverse, fair courts which, in turn, lead to fair rulings and fair sentencing. I stood outside the Senate building about

a year ago and urged the Governor to increase diversity on Delaware’s courts and fill Justice Montgomery-Reeves’ vacant seat with a Black justice.

Although our calls were not answered,

we are again faced with the opportunity to begin to correct the past that has disproportionately awarded white men these positions of leadership. I urge the Governor to replace Chancellor Bouchard and Justice Smalls with Black judges and move our courts in the right direction for diversity and justice.”

Pastor Hackett has joined Citizens for a Pro-Business Delaware in their

$250,000 awareness campaign for diverse appointments in leadership and on courts. The group has purchased print, radio and digital advertising space to spread awareness of the vacancies

and urge Governor Carney to take the opportunity to achieve his own stated goal of advancing diversity in leadership roles in Delaware. Since launching the campaign, CPBD has engage more than 350 Delaware residents to send emails to Governor Carney urging him to appoint a Black justice to replace Bouchard.

“We have only just begun our outreach to Delaware residents and we already have more than 350 emails into the Governor asking him to appoint a Black justice to the Chancery Court, which in times of turmoil is tasked with representing the best interest of people across the nation from many different backgrounds,” said Chris Coffey, Campaign Manager for Citizens for a Pro-Business Delaware. “How can Delaware courts represent those they are meant to serve when they are overwhelmingly comprised of wealthy, white men? The opportunity for Governor Carney to increase diversity on the courts is here again, and the time for change was decades ago.”

The tragic history of breast cancer for Black women is one of being underserved at almost every step in the health care system, including before they are diagnosed. These systemic issues are compounded by the lack of diversity in breast cancer research and clinical trials, leading to limited understanding of breast cancer in and the effectiveness of treatments for Black women.

“Black women face a trifecta of issues that negatively affect their breast cancer outcomes,” said Paula Schneider, Komen’s President and CEO. “They tend to be diagnosed younger, at later stages and with more aggressive and hard-to-treat subtypes of breast cancer, such as triple negative breast cancer.
