The new grant program aims to create a lasting impact through the economic empowerment of Black-owned small businesses across New England with grants of $25,000 to be awarded on a rolling basis.

Through this initiative, grant recipients will have opportunities to be featured on national co-branded platforms, as well as receiving design and marketing assistance customized to their specific needs to help their business grow and thrive.

“The pandemic has placed monumental strain on small businesses, and the past year has made clear our society’s need to work harder for equality, equity, and opportunity for all. We are proud to partner with like-minded organizations like the NAACP and the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation to help small business owners find success and achieve their dreams,” said Robert Keane, Vistaprint Founder and CEO. In November 2020, Vistaprint and the Celtics announced a multi-year partnership designed to make a lasting impact on local small businesses throughout New England. The Change Company, America’s Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), announced today its partnership with Netflix to expand Black homeownership in America.

The Netflix investment in affiliates of The Change Company is focused on bringing racial equity to home lending by financing Black homeowners, fairly and responsibly.

Empowered by its partnership with Netflix, The Change Company and its home loan subsidiary also announced the launch of its Black Homeownership Initiative to lend over $1 billion to expand Black homeownership. The Change Company will facilitate its outreach to underbanked borrowers in Black communities through its network of over 500 lenders who utilize The Change Company’s proprietary origination platform, lending products, and technology.

OF EDUCAT I ON Release s Guidance to Asse ss STUD EN T LEAR NING The U.S. Department of Education (ED) is providing guidance to states emphasizing the importance of flexibility in administering assessments this year as a result of the pandemic and supporting the use of assessment data as a source of information for parents and educators to target resources and support, rather than for accountability purposes this year.

State assessments and accountability systems play an important role in advancing educational equity, identifying student needs, and targeting the resources to address them. At the same time, some schools and districts may not be able to safely administer statewide summative assessments this spring using their standard practices, while others may wish to prioritize learning time during the scant inperson schooling time this year in many communities. The pandemic requires that states have significant flexibility in implementing this work for the 20202021 school year and ED's guidance is a practical approach that balances these two priorities.

Flexibility available to states includes:  Extending the testing window and moving assessments to the summer or fall,  Giving the assessment remotely, where feasible,  Shortening the state assessment, to make testing more feasible to implement and prioritize in-person learning time.

The Department also recognizes that individual states may need additional assessment flexibility based on the specific circumstances across or within the state. ED is prepared to work with

states to address their individual needs and conditions while ensuring the maximum available statewide data to inform the targeting of resources and support.

In addition to encouraging flexibility around assessments, ED is allowing states to request a waiver for the Every Student Succeeds Act's accountability and school identification requirements.

This flexibility will explicitly include waiving the accountability provisions relating to having a 95 percent test participation rate.

"States are working hard to respond to the unique circumstances they are facing and maintain their immediate focus on supporting students' social, emotional, and academic development," said Jessica Cardichon, Deputy Assistant Secretary of K-12, Office of Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Development. NE WS Historic Church To Appoint a BLACK JUSTICE to the All-White Chancery Court Pastor Blaine Hackett of historic St. John African Methodist Church, Inc. in Newark has joined Citizens for a Pro-Business Delaware’s (CPBD) calls to fill the vacancy of Chancery Court Chancellor Andre Bouchard with a Black justice. Pastor Hackett echoes the calls of legendary civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton in his recent letter to President Biden advocating for

increased diversity within the federal judiciary, and in Delaware.

“For too long in Delaware, and across the nation, our leadership

has not reflected the diversity of our congregations, our neighborhoods or our State,” said Pastor Blaine Hackett of St. John African Methodist Church, Inc. “The vacancy on the Chancery Court gives us yet another opportunity to advance Black leaders and support diverse, fair courts which, in turn, lead to fair rulings and fair sentencing. I stood outside the Senate building about

a year ago and urged the Governor to increase diversity on Delaware’s courts and fill Justice Montgomery-Reeves’ vacant seat with a Black justice.

Although our calls were not answered,

we are again faced with the opportunity to begin to correct the past that has disproportionately awarded white men these positions of leadership. I urge the Governor to replace Chancellor Bouchard and Justice Smalls with Black judges and move our courts in the right direction for diversity and justice.”

Pastor Hackett has joined Citizens for a Pro-Business Delaware in their

KNOW YOUR HISTORY, KNOW YOUR RISK Empowers Black Women According to Susan G. Komen®, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, the inequities laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic have long been experienced by Black women with breast cancer.

The tragic history of breast cancer for Black women is one of being underserved at almost every step in the health care system, including before they are diagnosed. These systemic issues are compounded by the lack of diversity in breast cancer research and clinical trials, leading to limited understanding of breast cancer in and the effectiveness of treatments for Black women.

“Black women face a trifecta of issues that negatively affect their breast cancer outcomes,” said Paula Schneider, Komen’s President and CEO. “They tend to be diagnosed younger, at later stages and with more aggressive and hard-to-treat subtypes of breast cancer, such as triple negative breast cancer. 1 AMINO ACIDS

These are the building blocks of protein and your hair follicles require a constant stream of amino acids for optimum hair growth.

Eight amino acids are essential for humans, as the body cannot produce them by themselves, and they have to be supplied externally.

As of 2016, the $171,000 average net worth of a typical White family was 10 times greater than the average $17,150 net worth of a typical Black family, according to the Brookings Institution. In 2018, The Washington Post reported that the number of Black decision-makers in venture capital dropped to 1 percent — representing just seven Black people at the 102 largest venture capital firms in the United States, according to an annual survey by the Information, a technews outlet. In 2019, according to the PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor, the authoritative quarterly report on venture capital activity in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, with support from Silicon Valley Bank and Carta, less than 1% of the $136.5 billion invested in approximately 11,000 USbased companies that are responsible for creating 60% of net new jobs went to Black high growth entrepreneurs.

Yet, according to a Washington Post analysis of data from the Federal Reserve 2013 Survey of Consumer Finances, 1% percent of Black Americans, approximately 440,000, have a net worth over one million dollars while 1.8%, approximately 792,000, generate over $200,000 annually in income.
