The bus is loud — in color and sound. That’s the way NBA star Stephen Curry and his entrepreneur wife, Ayesha Curry, prefer it.

They want the kids to see it coming.

Yet, it would be difficult to miss what the Currys call the Eat. Learn. Play. Bus, a hot pink, pale blue and yellowish gold mobile unit that rolls out for the first time Wednesday blaring music at an elementary school in Oakland, California.

This multifaceted converted school bus is designed to do much more than the ice cream truck from a bygone era: feed, teach, energize and engage Black children and other youths of color in Oakland’s stressed communities. In Alameda County, nearly 42 percent of children are eligible for free or reduced price lunch, according to one report.

Also, according to aCoach.org, Black children in Oakland are four times more likely to be reading multiple years below their grade level than white students.

“This idea came basically from me wanting to find a way to eradicate food deserts within the Oakland area,” Ayesha Curry said. “At first, the idea was around, ‘How can we find locations where people can come and pick up fresh produce and other things for their families?’ Logistically, especially with Covid, that idea started to seem far-fetched.”

But Eat. Learn. Play Foundation President and CEO Chris Helfrich tossed out the thought of a bus, and the Currys and their team ran with the notion as if pursuing a

loose ball. One idea spurred another, and before long the concept was solidified: a bus that would fulfill the foundation’s three pillars of healthy eating, fun learning and active playing. Cruising Kitchens, a custom food truck builder, was solicited to

convert the bus, and Oakland mural artists Illuminaries created the visuals on the bus that include Ayesha Curry cooking, Stephen Curry shooting a basketball, local landmarks like the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and more.

It is quite a vehicle, and not just because of its look. One side functions as a food truck or mobile pantry to provide complimentary hot food and fresh produce to children and families. The other side is a library, the couple’s attempt to address Oakland’s troubling literacy rate.

“And I know a guy who plays basketball,” Ayesha Curry quipped, “so we added a basketball hoop for the play pillar.” “It turned into this bigger-than-life idea,” she added.

There are also three flat-screen televisions, a booming sound system and a bus rooftop area that can accommodate up to 35 children. Stephen Curry said it will travel sometimes randomly to schools, community centers and churches. “We want mystique about it,” he said. “So it may show up anywhere, take on a life of its own and has the capabilities to host an event anywhere.”

Ayesha Curry, who has written two bestselling books and owns a store and café in Oakland, among other enterprises, said the idea for a mobile library came as she and her husband taught one of their children to read. When she learned of discouraging reading levels among Black and Latino students in the Oakland Unified School District, “that was it,” she said “That, to me, is unacceptable,” she continued. “It’s not the teacher’s fault. It’s not the parents’ fault. It’s a community issue. Let’s get together, give this model a try and see if we can create -- cont'd on Page 3

NAACP AND LANCÔME ANNOUNCE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

On International Literacy Day, NAACP is proud to announce its partnership with Lancôme to provide a scholarship fund and mentoring programs for young women on their collegiate educational journey to foster self-confidence, empowerment, and opportunities for learning and career development in the United States. The Write Her Future Scholarship Fund builds on the brand's global commitment to empower women by giving them access to literacy, mentoring, and entrepreneurship courses.

Starting September 2021, NAACP ACTSO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) will partner with Lancôme on a scholarship program that will result in 30 Regional Grants at $10,000 each for students entering college in the 2022 academic year. ACT-SO is a year-long achievement program that reaches over 10,000 college-bound students to provide a forum for young women to excel in business, STEM and writing among the array of programs offered.

"We are thrilled to partner with Lancôme on the Write Her Future Scholarship Fund," said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. "As an organization dedicated to doing the work in our communities ourselves, we greatly appreciate Lancôme for consistently using their platform to enable change and influence. BIPOC is an acronym for Black, Indigenous, People of Color. LatinX is an umbrella term for people of Latin American origin or descent. In the United States, BIPOC and LatinX entrepreneurs struggle to fund their businesses. These racial minority groups find applying for business loans discouraging and are less likely to submit loan applications. Lack of funding impacts their ability to remain in business.

Using the bus as the draw, the foundation plans to have screenings, clinics and other health-related activities. While the couple has business partners, the Currys financed the bulk of the multimillion-dollar venture.

The bus, in a way, is the physical symbol of the Currys’ commitment to doing good for others. Since the three-point marksman was drafted out of Davidson College by the Golden State Warriors in 2009, he has been involved in charities and myriad causes in Oakland and beyond, including donating $1 million to the Warriors Community Foundation, which provided funds for arena employees who lost work during the pandemic, and traveling to Tanzania to deliver bed nets to residents to prevent malaria. Two years after becoming a pro, he married Ayesha Curry, who had taken up various charities and philanthropic interests of her own.

The couple collaborating to create the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, however, has been “special,” Stephen Curry said. “It’s kind of surreal,” he said. “We have been a part of a lot of organizations and charities and initiatives from the time we got out here that have done some amazing work. I was working with projects on ending malaria and supporting military families. She was doing things toward ending hunger and working with other amazing organizations.

“We got to the point: ‘How can we align all the stars and bring the entire focus and team together to do something that will sustain the test of time and not be about us, but be through us?’”

So they partnered and built a team of leaders with “like-minded hearts and a

mission to impact the community,” he said.

When the Golden State Warriors moved in 2019 from Oakland, a city made up of nearly 24 percent Black residents, to San Francisco, which is about 5 percent Black people, “it was bittersweet,” Stephen Curry said. “Oakland has been our adopted home,” he said. “There’s so much talent and promise in Oakland, but not as much opportunity. And that’s something that we have to strive to address, with this bus as just the latest rendition of doing that.”

The Currys’ commitment has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Cathy Adams, the President and CEO of the Oakland African American Chamber of Commerce, for one, was thrilled but not surprised to learn of the Currys’ Eat. Learn. Play. Bus. “They are rooted in Oakland, even though the team has moved,” Adams said. “And it’s heartening to see an NBA star and his successful wife in her own right use their platform for good. Over the years they have shown a commitment to Oakland in general, but especially to neighborhoods where kids need to be impacted more, neighborhoods that have been compromised by systemic racism.”

NATIONAL SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) is proud to join federal and non-federal partners in raising awareness about this debilitating disease affecting approximately 100,000 people in the U.S.

ALL BLACK ORCHESTRA

The Gateways Music Festival Orchestra is making history as the first all-Black classical symphony orchestra to do a feature performance at Carnegie Hall. It is the first time ever in the prestigious venue’s 130-year history!

The concert at Carnegie Hall will be held on April 24, 2022, which will serve as the conclusion of the 6-day festival in different venues in Rochester and New York City.

Throughout the orchestra, the musicians will perform in a full orchestral concert and participate in several chamber recitals, open rehearsals, professional development activities, lectures, panel discussions, and film screenings.

In 1993, Gateways Music Orchestra was founded by concert pianist and educator Armenta Adams (Hummings) Dumisani to bring together Black professional classical musicians.

It also became a safe haven away from the discrimination many have experienced from their jobs.

Since then, it has expanded to an orchestra with around 125 musicians and instrumentalists who were also from several larger orchestras such as the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the National, Boston, Houston, Phoenix, and Detroit Symphonies.

Their performance at the Carnegie Hall is a historic moment because even though the venue hosted several allBlack ensembles over the years, this is going to be the first feature performance of an all-Black classical symphony orchestra ever. Lee Koonce, who took over as Gateways’ President and Artistic Director after Dumisani’s retirement in 2009, expressed his excitement over the historic debut. “Gateways Music Festival’s journey to Carnegie Hall has been 28 years in the

making. To be the first all-Black classical symphony orchestra to headline a performance there is momentous, especially at this time of racial reckoning in our country’s history. EDUCAT ION HOWARD UNIVERSITY RENAMES ARTS COLLEGE IN CHADWICK BOSEMAN’S NAME

It's official. Howard University has renamed its College of Fine Arts after late actor Chadwick Boseman, who died last year at age 43 following a four-year battle with colon cancer.

The historically Black university shared a time-lapse video showing the installation of the new letters on the school’s building, which is now the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts.

"Yesterday, the letters were installed over the now official Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts," the school said in a tweet Friday. "An icon in his own right who has left an immeasurable legacy for the next generation. Thank you Mr. Boseman."

Howard University first announced in May that it would rename its performing and visual arts school after the 'Black Panther' star who also happens to be an alumnus of the school. Boseman graduated from Howard in 2000 with a bachelor of arts degree in directing.

During his time at the school, Boseman led a student protest against the absorption of the College of Fine Arts into the larger College of Arts & Sciences, according to the university.

In 2018, the year Boseman rocketed to international fame as King T'Challa in the Marvel cinematic universe, the university announced that its performing and visual arts school would return to its independent status.

"Chad fought to preserve the College of Fine Arts during his matriculation at Howard and remained dedicated to the fight throughout his career, and he would be overjoyed by this development," Boseman's family previously said in a statement. "His time at Howard University helped shape both the man and the artist that he became, committed to truth, integrity,

and a determination to transform the world through the power of storytelling."

In addition to the renaming, the university announced efforts from Walt Disney Company's Executive Chairman Bob Iger to establish an endowment named after Boseman and raise money to build a new arts facility on the campus. The "Black Panther" film

was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.

"Through his tremendous example he inspired millions to overcome adversity, dream big and reach beyond the status quo," Iger said in a statement back in May, "and this college named in his honor ... will provide opportunities for future generations of artists to follow in his footsteps and pursue their dreams."

Lomax, President and CEO, UNCF said in a release. “There is a wealth of unseen imagery within the archives of HBCUs that have rarely been seen, and these grants from Getty Images will be an essential part of the ongoing documentation and preservation of Black history.”

All revenue from the HBCU photos will be distributed to HBCU schools to continue impacting the grants program. Fifty percent of the funds will go to grant recipients, and 20% will be reinvested to fund the Getty Images Photo Archive Grants. The remaining 30% will be distributed to the UNCF-Getty Images Scholarship to support the educational future of HBCU students. The scholarships will be available for students in the 2022 academic year. Getty Images CoFounder and Chairman Mark Getty is excited about the HBCU partnership.
