Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms launched two initiatives per her Administrative Orders related to the Mayor’s Use of Force Advisory Council recommendations: a public use of force dashboard and a video evidence submittal portal.

The creation of the Use of Force Dashboard was a collaborative effort between the Mayor’s Office, Atlanta Police Department (APD), the Atlanta Citizen Review Board (ACRB) and Atlanta Information Management (AIM). The purpose of the Use of Force Dashboard is to improve transparency, increase trust between the public and APD and facilitate fact-based discussions around police performance in the city of Atlanta. This dashboard will be updated quarterly, with the next update expected in October 2021.

Harlem’s Calabar Gallery presents “Bl ack Artists In Their Own Realm: Ideas, Materials ad Technique s” until Sept. 5. The exhibition was curated by Nigerian-born, American and British educated designer turned curator Atim Annette Oton, co-owner of Calabar Imports, an African fashion clothing, jewelry, home furnishings and gift store.

The exhibition, which opened July 29 at the Calabar Gallery, explores what ways Black Artists globally are working ideas from concept to processing, using materials and techniques to evolve artwork. It showcases a group of African, Caribbean, and African-American Artists whose work dig deep into ideas, materials and technique innovatively and philosophically.

The Calabar Gallery showcases contemporary African Artists and African Diaspora artists globally. Based in Harlem, work featured is inspire and influenced by Black African culture globally with a focus on dynamic ideas about art and society.

The 5th Annual Black Owned Wine & Spirits Festival will take place in Washington, DC on Saturday, September 25h – 26th 2021 from 2pm to 8pm at Dock 5, Union Market. The festival was founded by Chanel Turner, the first African American woman to be a sole proprietor in the US Spirits Industry. In 2009, Turner launched FOUDRÉ Vodka into the heavily monopolized US Spirits industry. FOU-DRÉ (a play on the French word for lighting) has since expanded into Global Alliance Distribution, a distribution enterprise which provides distribution to minorityowned craft brands seeking placement in the Washington Metropolitan area market. This year’s BOWSFest will feature the re-integrated BOWSFest App allowing attendees to earn points which convert to BOWSFest dollars for the purchase of food and goods, ultimately encouraging the use of social engagement and collective economics.

NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM Celebrates 30-YEAR MILESTONE Thirty years ago, the National Civil Rights Museum became the first museum of its kind to chronicle the American civil rights history in America when it opened to the public July 4, 1991.

The museum will celebrate the landmark year with a special Freedom Award event, a community celebration and an exhibition in which the public can participate. The 30th anniversary occasion continues the tradition of telling the story of everyday people who helped to make this nation great and highlights those whose stories are intertwined with the museum’s existence.

This year marks the 30th celebration of the Freedom Award, a ceremony that honors individuals who have made significant contributions to civil and human rights in America and abroad.

The Freedom Award is on October 14 and will feature a hybrid format with the live show and audience on site and virtual attendees engaging globally.

Since 1991 the museum has honored 96 individuals or organizations. Due to the pandemic, last year’s virtual Freedom Award was the first time the museum did not present honorees. This year’s honorees will be announced in the coming weeks.

On September 25, the museum will host its 30th Anniversary Community

Celebration as way to recommit and again thank the community. In the 1980s, it was a community of people that birthed the idea of a museum through a fundraising campaign launched by the Lorraine Civil Rights Foundation (formerly the Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation).

The museum would not exist without the support of Memphians who fought to save the Lorraine Motel and turned the sacred place into a world renown museum. To make this celebration even more special, admission is free on September 25, thanks to FedEx. The museum has seen tremendous growth since 1991 with key milestones in its institutional history. In 2002 it acquired the infamous boarding house to expand its exhibitions including the state’s prosecutorial evidence against James Earl Ray who was convicted as King’s assassin. The National Civil Rights Museum completed a $28 million renovation of its Lorraine exhibits in 2014 with interactives and enhancements that create a more powerful, transformative experience to immerse its visitors. In 2008 and 2018, the museum hosted thousands of visitors for the 40th and 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination during which it was the epicenter for the global commemoration. Through its programs and events, it continues

to position King’s perpetual question, “Where do we go from here?”

Today, the museum’s exhibitions include stories of not only famous civil rights heroes, but it also highlights the everyday men, women and children who made the Movement possible.

The museum invites the public to share their stories connected to the museum’s transformation from a site of tragedy to one of triumph, through all its growth periods as a site of conscience and a safe space for difficult dialogue.

Blacks in Cybersecurity known as “BIC” seeks to ignite a cultural change in the Black community through their Cybersecurity education and career pipeline initiatives. BIC seeks to educate and operate in a way to expose Cybersecurity as a hobby and outlet that can be experienced in any walk of life, in a casual and no-pressure environment. In re-imagining the traditional way in which knowledge is shared and presented, and adopting a philosophy that encourages lifelong learning, skill building and “tinkering” with concepts to gain hands-on understanding, BIC seeks to change the face of what a stereotypical Cybersecurity professional or hobbyist may look like.

The program will accept applications three times in 2021 and will offer grants for arts and cultural experiences that use technology to connect audiences beyond the physical boundaries of space. The move to online-only platforms breaks down accessibility barriers, increases interest among audiences, and invites experimentation on a large scale. Most importantly, this move facilitates the re-imagination of these important cultural contributions beyond traditional structures.

History by having the honor and privilege of being the first black owned and operated competition to be present and to present a Black Badge to the winners of their competition. The DEF CON Black Badge is a “powerful talisman," awarded to those who have emerged unbeaten from the crucible of an elite DEF CON competition. The competition that receives this badge varies from year to year and seeks to highlight the very best in competitors. Those who receive the badge enter DEF CON free of charge for the duration of their natural life. In participating in this honored pastime of the Hacker community, BIC seek s to continue its work in creating space for and uplifting the Black community in Cybersecurity.
