The New York LGBT Network, organizers of Long Island Pride, announced today that Pride will go on and be bigger than ever. Adhering to meeting the requirements to not gather in large crowds, this year’s Pride celebration will feature “Virtual NY Pride” on Sunday, June 14th, the day commemorating the 30th Anniversary of Long Island Pride which was scheduled to take place at Jones Beach.

“We are now adjusting to living in the new normal and we have to remember that Pride is not only an event, but a state of being,” said David Kilmnick, President/CEO of the New York LGBT Network. “It is not an option to cancel Pride. We are creating many ways for everyone to be OUT, while we are in,” said Kilmnick.

POLITICAL COMMENTARY: White Privilege…Something We All Can’t Feel

I was on Youtube watching my normal assortment of Ancient History based channels which usually cover the strategies and failures of past generals and kings and all of a sudden I saw a video on white privilege come up on my feed. I thought to myself that I should watch this video, not just because I have an interest in warfare and the battle lines that are drawn during it, but because I had such a firm opinion on what white privilege sounds like to me. The video consisted of conservative comedian Adam Carrola and conservative icon Dennis Prager discussing how white privilege did not exist, in front of an audience that was hidden from view by the camera angle. I spent about fifteen minutes listening to Caraolla’s tale of how he struggled as a white man in California and Pragers interjections of how foolish anyone would be to think that Carolla enjoyed any benefits from his skin color alone.

But as long as most Hollywood roles go to whites, most political representatives are white, most bankers giving loans are white, most people who can afford a graduate education are white and so forth, it should be obvious that although we all do suffer life, few of us suffer “white.”

No one says that white people don’t suffer. White people are human and to be human is to toil: they bleed when struck, they lose loved ones, they have their prayers go unanswered and they die just like the rest of us. But between womb and tomb, they do not suffer the feeling author James Baldwin described in his book, "The Fire Next Time," which is the feeling that your color is a heavy mask you are wearing that cannot be moved but is always felt and always uncomfortable to wear. To be able to be free enough that you can sit with another white person and debate a phenomena that affects a race you are not a part of and leave that “debate”

As I turned off the video, I regarded two things: that we all have our own echo chambers and that no matter what they said I felt unsettled by the points they were making. In terms of echo chambers, when you discuss the privilege your skin color does or does not afford you it would be fair to have a differing opinion. Only because that’s how you have an actual debate. But these two adult, successful white men only increased each other’s belief in their own consenting logic processes and made no mention of any of the

satisfied and comforted means that you are experiencing the very white privilege you, Dennis Prager and Adam Carolla, purport does not exist. After all, their only evidence to the contrary was anecdotes from the lives of two individuals, themselves, not data on the rate of acceptance of historically oppressed minorities into schools, or professions, or the continuance of police malfeasance and brutality or the very fact that “whiteness” was a term they adopted for themselves and “blackness” which is aligned with thoughts of darkness and “other” was placed upon black people. I am no bleeding heart Utopian, worshipping leftist who believes there will be a day without inequality, rather I am a moderate minded consciousness critique who values and extols the value of self awareness, the ability to realize what variables influence your life and how you are a variable yourself. These two men lack that level of self awareness or they don’t and in the most vile fashion are only pretending to endear themselves to a certain audience.

IN D EP E N D E N T A UTO P SY FIN DS GE ORGE FLOYD DIED FROM "A S P H Y X I ATI ON F RO M S U S TA I NED PRESSURE" Protests and demonstrations were held across the country as thousands of people reacted to the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police on May 25.

After an official autopsy from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner suggested that Floyd’s death was the result of being restrained in combination with underlying health issues, his family’s attorney has released the results of a private autopsy, according to USA Today.

Benjamin Crump, the family’s attorney, announced that the independent autopsy “determined that asphyxiation from sustained pressure was the cause” of Floyd’s death after Derek Chauvin, a since-fired Minneapolis police officer, applied pressure to Floyd’s neck as he laid on the ground for more than eight minutes. Floyd was unconscious for nearly three of those minutes.

“For George Floyd, the ambulance was his hearse,” Crump said. “Beyond

question, he would be alive today if not for the pressure applied to his neck by fired officer Derek Chauvin and the strain on his body from two additional officers kneeling on him.

Mr. Floyd’s death was a homicide by officers who taunted him while holding him down for more than eight minutes. And the officer who stood by doing nothing was a physical blue shield – a living symbol of the code of silence.”

Dr. Michael Baden and Dr. Allecia Wilson performed the autopsy and they determined there was “neck and back compression that led to a lack of blood flow to the brain,” according to Crump’s statement. They went on to say that “weight on the back, handcuffs and positioning were contributory factors because they impaired the ability of Mr. Floyd’s diaphragm to function.”

To further contradict claims made in the initial autopsy, Baden stated that

Floyd likely died at the scene of his arrest. “What we found is consistent with what people saw,” Baden said. “There is no other health issue that could cause or contribute to the death. Police have this false impression that if you can talk, you can breathe. That’s not true.”

The incident was captured on video by passersby who witnessed four Minneapolis police officers arrest and restrain Floyd. He was taken into custody under suspicion of using a fake $20 bill.

As of this writing, Derek Chauvin is the only of the four officers who were on the scene to have been arrested, though they were all fired the following day.

Protests and riots have since been started throughout major cities across the U.S. for days in connection to Floyd’s death as citizens express their frustrations.

(Black PR Wire) Instagram was flooded with posts of black squares on Tuesday as social media users around the world participated in the so-called Blackout Tuesday protest.

The idea of this protest, which was thought up by workers in the music industry, is to pause business for the day to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement after the death of George Floyd.

"It is a day to take a beat for an honest, reflective and productive conversation about what actions we need to collectively take to support the Black community," music executives Jamila Thomas and Brianna Agyemang, who are spearheading the initiative, wrote online.

Beginning early Tuesday, brands and retailers from around the world –

including fast-fashion giant Boohoo and Rihanna's Savage x Fenty – jumped in on the Blackout Tuesday protest, sharing the black square on their Instagram feeds with the hashtag Blackout Tuesday. At the time of writing, there were nearly seven million posts listed under this hashtag on the platform.

LA-based denim brand Lucky Brand took it a step further and issued a statement on Monday confirming that it would be closing its website, offices, and stores on Tuesday too. The brand has about 250 stores in North America.

"Employees will be given paid time off to reflect on the recent events in Minneapolis

and demonstrations throughout our nation. This day away from work is an intentional cease of commerce and typical business operations, both as a statement of unity and empathy for the Black community's ongoing plight," it said.

Lucky Brand said it is encouraging its workers to use the day to demonstrate peacefully, work with their local community, or volunteer with local organizations "to help with the clean-up of destruction caused by looting in Los Angeles neighborhoods."

There has been some backlash online around the Blackout Tuesday protests, however, as critics say that some of these posts are also tagged with the Black Lives Matter hashtags and are therefore clogging up this feed on Instagram and obscuring important posts about protests.

The list highlights some of the people and organizations who have gone against the grain and worked to ensure that the history, struggles, pain and joy of Black people across the Diaspora — Black lives in all of their complexity and diversity — have been documented and shared with audiences across mediums.

BPM’s commemoration of its 40th year will culminate June 23 through 25 with its second National Black Media Story Summit, a virtual convening of creatives, distributors, thought leaders and funders addressing ways to distribute Black stories as the nation confronts the history of oppression in America and Black creatives respond with even greater dedication to telling the unapologetic truth.

Founded in 1979 as the National Black Programming Consortium and later rebranded to its current name in 2018, BPM was formed from a collective of Black producers at public television stations joining forces to bring their locally produced Black television content to national audiences and greater diversity to public television. Recognizing the importance of channeling resources to Black storytellers to allow them to present diverse Black stories, the organization soon expanded its mission to include financing films.

From funding important works such as Julie Dash’s landmark film Daughters of the Dust and Raoul Peck’s acclaimed I Am Not Your Negro; to serving as one of the supporting organizations in the creation of ITVS (the Independent Television Service) which was established by an act of Congress; to presenting its own signature documentary series AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange and hit web series like Black Folk Don’t; to establishing the Black Media Story Summit in 2018, a

convening of talent and thought leaders on getting Black content funneled into the pipeline; to developing and training Black producers in new and emerging media by way of its 360+ Incubator Fund; BPM has remained central to and steadfast in its mission to amplify the work of creatives of color and help grow equity and representation within the industry.

The institution remains the nation’s only nonprofit media arts organization dedicated solely to creating media content about the global Black experience.

“As we reflect on 40 years as an organization at such an explosive moment in America, it has never been more vital that we as a community remain at the helm of creating and telling our stories,” said BPM Executive Director Leslie FieldsCruz. “One of the reasons BPM has been able to remain at the forefront is due to the strong community of creatives and partnerships we amassed, so it was only fitting that we recognize some of those who helped us along the way to shift the paradigm. It takes the collective to make change happen.”

Witnessing the murder of yet another unarmed Black man — Minneapolis security guard George Floyd — at the hands of White police officers has shaken me to my core.

Another senseless death, in the midst of a global pandemic that is taking so many lives.

Four years ago, I visited St. Paul, Minnesota, to see the make-shift memorial to Philando Castile, erected days after his shooting death during a traffic stop in July 2016. I remember thinking then that maybe America witnessing a Black man being killed live on social media, in front of his girlfriend and her child, would be enough to ignite change.

I serve as president and CEO of March of Dimes, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to fighting for the health of moms and babies. My team and I work hard to improve health outcomes for women before and during pregnancy, and for new moms and their newborns.

We focus on reducing maternal mortality and morbidity, as well as premature birth and infant mortality.

The urgency of this work is

White babies to die before their first birthdays.

It will not be possible for us to change these outcomes — and save thousands of lives — unless and until we address the inequities that exist in communities of color.

CONFRONTING HARD TRUTHS ____________________ The first step is to boldly address systemic and structural racism in healthcare. That means going beyond saying it exists. We have to confront the hard truths

have not been accepted in this country regarding access to healthcare since the first Africans arrived on these shores. Never in the history of this country has there been adequate healthcare extended to persons of color — certainly not to slaves nor any of their descendants. We are the only industrialized country that systemically excludes people from access to affordable healthcare.

Nearly every day, I hear the cries of so many moms and babies

Sadly, it did not. Since then, many more Black men and women have died due to police violence. This includes, within months of each other, the senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor in her Louisville, Kentucky, apartment, and more.

George Floyd’s exasperated last words, calling out for his deceased mom, were especially agonizing to hear. For me, hearing these words in the final moments of his life was one of the most painful aspects of his death.

I have two teenage daughters.

Being a mom has granted me unspeakable joy. But I also carry the daily burden of worry for my children’s safety and well-being.

So, hearing a man’s plea for his Momma in his last moments created a pain in me like none other. I imagined if he had been my own child, how it would have affected me to hear his cry for help while dying at the hands of police officers sworn to serve and protect.

And just as racism underpins police brutality, disproportionately impacting Black and Brown communities, it also lies at the root of our maternal and infant health disparities.

On the behalf of Black Veterans, the Coalition issued a petition on MoveOn.Org calling for public support in seeking the Congressional Black Caucus to request a Hearing before the World Court on Human Rights violations against the United States of America.

Cities across the nation are in turmoil with protesters in the streets, structures burning and looting. Let us not get this twisted or let others do so, this is not the doings of the majority our youth and many others supporters. Some parties with less than honorable intent is using the occasion to cause mayhem and destruction. Sure, we can call for members of the public to stop the protest, but then “what?” What is the game plan? Or, do we expect them to stop and wait for the Government who has shown it is blind and tone deaf to the injustices to do “What?” America’s leadership has no credability speaking of equal justice. The nation has maintained a duel system of justice from its inception.

I have mentioned on past occasion that we believe America is in a mental state of turmoil. White America has been dismissive of the suffering and double standards subjected on Black/Brown and other Minority citizens. As an example of its insensitivity, recently White men armed with rifles marched on State Capitals. The demand was for State Governments to order Black and Brown people in the labor market back to work.

The demand was not because the environment was now safe to return. Instead, it was because they are tired of the inconvenience of services.

“Black Lives Matter.” The recent murders of Gregory Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery has caused many young people to join in the street protest. They are protesting for good cause, however putting their lives at farther risk to make the point. In addition, they like many other Black Americans live in a state of Post-Traumatic Stress because of the double standards of justice we have been subjected. Regardless, there is a need for dialogue between the Government and the Black population of this nation.

We cannot continue to function under the doctrine of business as usual.

Our goal is to collect signatures between now and Veterans Day, November 11, 2020. The petition will be present to the Congressional Black Caucus to demonstrate public support for the issue of Human Rights in America to be elevated to the World Court for Hearings.

The request would demonstrate our leader’s determination to address the issue while sparing greater risk of exposure to the virus to those protesting in the streets. We understand the lack of trust and faith in the system. Hopefully, knowing the Congressional Black Caucus is being asked to pursue justice through the World body will help stem the violence while meaningful redress is sought.

We believe the Hearings would resonate around the world. The United States is not alone in the practice of racism. The Hearings may give other countries the impetus to improve their Human Rights standings. It would give America the opportunity to explain or not, its position in

maintaining or changing its duel system of justice. The Hearings would be up-lifting to the Black

Citizens of this Nation and an education on Black American History to the rest of the world.
