Empire State Development (ESD) and the Long Island STEM Hub announced the launch of a new video series and curriculum for children in grades K-12 titled “Full STEM Ahead Long Island,” which will highlight science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers available on Long Island. The series is intended to encourage students to start thinking about a future in STEM — furthering Governor Cuomo’s efforts to build Long Island’s innovation corridor and strengthen workforce development across the state.

“On Long Island and across the Empire State, our innovation economy is surging, and we want to ensure New Yorkers are prepared to thrive in the jobs of today — and tomorrow,” Empire State Development Acting Commissioner and President & CEO-designate Eric Gertler said. “Workforce development is critical to economic development, and we are proud of this partnership, which has brought together government, private industry, non-profits and educators to provide opportunities for students to learn about STEM careers.”

Founded in 2011, the Long Island STEM Hub is a volunteer consortium of industry, academic and not-for-profit professionals from across Long Island working to advance science, technology, engineering and math education in the region. Promoting STEM programs in grades K-12 is critical to ensuring students on Long Island have the key skills that will drive the 21st century tech economy, strengthen existing business on Long Island and draw more companies to the region.

The new video campaign and matching curriculum launched today — “Full STEM Ahead Long Island” — includes 10 videos,

which will be released in the coming months. The series will highlight growth industries on Long Island, including healthcare and bioengineering, and will encourage students, teachers, and parents to discuss the skills and talents needed to pursue STEM careers. The first video, “Crushin’ it with Composites,” focuses on manufacturing and has already been nominated for a New York Emmy Award. The “Full STEM Ahead Long Island” project was supported by a $320,000 grant from Empire State Development, awarded through the Long

Since 2011, New York State has invested over $250 million in supporting Long Island’s innovation corridor, including advancing projects including Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Center for Therapeutics Research, an electron microscope building at Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Stony Brook University’s Institute for Discovery and Innovation in Medicine & Engineering, among many others. Just last month, the U.S. Department of Energy announced that a one-of-a-kind electron-ion collider will be built on Long Island, thanks to strategic state investments — including $165 million to support the collider project.

GRANT TO ADELPHI BRE AST CANCER AWARDED Members of the Junior Coalition of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer (MWCABC) presented a grant of $10,000 to the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The grant will support free educational forums which focus on medical, legal, pyscho-social and wellness topics and are facilitated by experts in various fields of practice.

Receiving the check is Reyna Machado, the executive director of the Adelphi program. Says Ms. Machado: “The Junior Coalition’s funding helps our efforts to educate women and their families about breast cancer. This March, we are hosting a forum on Sleep Disturbances Related

to Breast Cancer and in April we will be hosting a forum on Planning for the Future: Advance Directives and Finances.

It was wonderful to meet 9th graders who are taking leadership roles and fundraising for their community. We are very grateful for their continued support.”

The Junior Coalition of MWCABC was formed in 2003 as a charitable organization for Manhasset teenagers to provide education and awareness about breast cancer at a teenage appropriate level without fear, to generate compassion and understanding for those afflicted with the disease and the family and friends affected by it, and to join together to raise funds for breast cancer research and

patient support programs.

Fundraising activities include dances, planting flowers for outreach recipients, baking and delivering holiday cookies to survivors and assisting at MWCABC’s 5K Family walk/run. There are 250 Junior Coalition members ranging from 9th to 12th grade.

The Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, provides information and emotional support to people coping with breast cancer through their statewide hotline (800-877-8077), community outreach and education programs.

Oprah Winfrey Network's popular drama "If Loving You Is Wrong" will premiere its fifth and final season on Tuesday, March 10 at 10:00 p.m.

Color is all around us, woven so tightly into our lives that we rarely stop to question what it is and how it works.

Where do the colors in diamonds and rainbows come from? How have some animals benefited by evolving to stand out, while others survive by blending in? Why do some colors make us happy while others make us, well, blue? How did pink come to be associated with femininity in Western culture after centuries of being considered suitable for all? The Nature of Color, a new exhibition opening at the American Museum of Natural History this spring, reveals how color carries information in nature—where organisms use it to find food, warn off predators, and conceal or reveal themselves—and across cultures, where different colors can signal a wide range of meanings, from good luck to power to a sense of urgency.

This fun, family-friendly exhibition features models, cultural objects, media, and interactive exhibits that will invite visitors to play and experiment while exploring the science of color, how it makes us feel, how it is perceived across cultures, the history of color production, and how plants and animals use color to help them survive and

reproduce. Visitors will explore the physics of color in an immersive colorchanging room and a light lab with hands-on activities to discover that white light is actually a mixture of colors; play a game show interactive—on kiosks or from their mobile devices—that examines how colors affect emotions, alertness, perception of time, appetite, and much more; and “paint” without the mess in a floor-to-ceiling color play interactive just by moving their hands.

Visitors also will come face to face with three live species that rely on their unique coloration for survival: the leaf-tailed gecko, which evolved to blend in with dried leaves and tree bark; the golden poison frog, among the most colorful creatures on Earth, whose skin contains a deadly poison traditionally used in hunting darts; and iridescent blue beetles. A section on making color will explore the rich history of blue pigments in particular, with objects from the Museum’s anthropological collection and an interactive that will demonstrate the process of dying indigo fabric, which was used to create the dark blue hues of Japanese artwork, African textiles, and the first blue jeans.

AMATEUR NIGHT at the Apollo, sponsored by Coca-Cola, returns on February 19th at 7:30 p.m. marking the 86th year of the signature program, and will introduce the new “Set It Off Man” Greginald Spencer. This season, contestants will compete for the chance to win this year’s Amateur Night champion title.

Apollo Theater’s signature original, large-scale talent competition and one of the longest-running continuous events in New York City is hosted by comedian Capone and features staples like C.P. Lacey in the role of the “Executioner” (in charge of ushering off “booed” contestants), Greginald Spencer the new “Set It Off Man,” and the Apollo’s Amateur Night house band led by music director, Michael Mitchell.

Amateur Night at the Apollo is produced by Marion J. Caffey along with coordinator Kathy Jordan Sharpton.

As part of the exhibition, the Museum will feature an installation of portraits by Brazilian photographer Angélica Dass.

Her work showcases the diversity of human skin tones, challenging socially constructed racial categories and celebrating the beauty and diversity of humans from around the world.

The Nature of Color is curated by Rob DeSalle, a curator in the Museum’s Division of Invertebrate Zoology whose recent exhibitions include Our Senses: An Immersive Experience, and Brain: The Inside Story.

The Nature of Color will open to the public on Monday, March 9, 2020.

Museum Members will be able to preview the exhibition starting on Friday, March 6, through Sunday, March 8.

Each year HFAS showcases a great line up of talented artists both locally and abroad and this year will be no different.
