LOAN DEBT, CYBERSECURITY, AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM AS TOP 2020 VOTING ISSUES Healthcare, immigration, and the state of the economy dominate mainstream conversations on top voter issues in 2020, but new survey data suggests a majority of black millennial voters will choose candidates based on their student loan debt, criminal justice reform, and cybersecurity policy ideas.

The survey, completed by Beyond Ideas Group, an integrated public affairs company founded by a former Obama White House and Treasury appointee, received over 400 responses. 94 percent of respondents indicated plans to vote in 2020. When asked about their most critical voting issues in 2020, 57 percent listed student loan debt as the most important economic issue, 36 percent noted criminal justice reform was the most urgent domestic issue, and 59 percent indicated cybersecurity was the most significant international issue.

“The data from this survey shows that much of the mainstream commentary around the economy or other policy issues hide the everyday realities and perspectives of many black millennials,” said Antonio White, founder and

principal at Beyond Ideas Group. “It’s hard for many black millennials to prioritize fear of a possible recession when crippling student loan debt or family financial obligations loom above their heads. Every day might feel like a recession.”

to just 16 percent for white families.

White expressed policy hopes for this survey, stating “with the threat of another recession, our goal is that this survey will prompt deeper conversation, more robust data, and, most importantly, policy change that protects our citizens and preserves the American Dream for all.”

Youth Essay & Art Contest.” Participation in the contest reached a 9-year high with essay and art submissions from thirty states and the District of Columbia. Each of the ten (10) youth contestants were awarded a $1,000 savings account for a winning essay or piece of art on financial literacy.

The “I Got Bank!” youth essay & art contest is part of a larger OneUnited Bank initiative to educate youth and adults about smart money management. I Got Bank! was offered at no cost to libraries and middle schools across the U.S. and to date, more than 3,000 copies have been donated in 37 states. In 2018 and 2019, OneUnited Bank held a 3-city book give away, where Ms. Williams provided free autographed books to over 800 families.

actress and motivational speaker. A native of San Francisco, California, Brooks is multi-talented and is also a classically trained dancer. She studied and taught ballet, jazz, and modern dance. The consummate professional, Brooks studied literature and sociology and is a graduate of UC Berkeley where she majored in Media Representation of Minorities with a minor in Theater.

She also earned a Master’s degree from Sarah Lawrence College.

In her early career, Brooks was active in the Rodney Theater Company.

She has many television credits and has appeared on The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Promised Land, and The Jamie Foxx Show. Brooks also appeared in a number of films, like Hell’s Kitchen, Timecode, and Impostor. From 1998 to 2000, she starred alongside Pam Grier in the Showtime comedy series, Linc’s.

Brooks is best known for her portrayal of the character Maya Wilkes on the CW sitcom Girlfriends, in which she starred alongside

Tracee Ellis Ross, Persia White and Jill Marie Jones from 2000 to 2008.

In 2001, she appeared in an episode of Moesha, portraying Maya Wilkes.

For her performance in Girlfriends, Brooks received the BET Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2004, and well as two nominations for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series in 2003 and 2008.

Brooks also won the Black Reel Awards for the 2004 film Motives, co-starring with Vivica A. Fox and Shemar Moore. She has starred in Beauty Shop (2005) and Something New (2006). In 2008, Brooks was cast as Kim Kaswell in the Lifetime comedydrama pilot Drop Dead Diva, but later was replaced by Kate Levering. In 2011, she starred in the independent film The Inheritance.

In 2012, Brooks joined the cast of Hart of Dixie in season 2 playing Ruby Jeffries, Mayor Lavon Hayes’ ex-girlfriend from high school, who runs against him for mayor.

In 2014, Brooks starred as one

of five leads on the TV One reality series, Hollywood Divas.

In 2015, Brooks was cast in a recurring role of Patrick Stewart’s lead character’s ex-wife in the Starz comedy series, Blunt Talk. In 2017, she was cast as the lead character’s mother in The Darkest Minds, a young adult dystopian thriller directed

Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us” Earns Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us” earned four wins from the African American Film Critics Association, has announced the winners of its upcoming AAFCA TV Honors. The highly popular Netflix limited series about the infamous Central Park rape case that resulted in the arrest and false imprisonment of five black youths, received the group’s Best Limited Series, Best Ensemble, Best Writing and Breakout Performance for Jharrel Jerome who plays Korey Wise in the series.

VACCINES Are Safe , Effective & Keep Our Kids Healthy

As parents and children prepare to go back to school, the Health Department is reminding New Yorkers about the importance of vaccines with a new ad campaign. The campaign “Don’t Hesitate.

Vaccinate!” reminds parents and guardians to get their children vaccinated on time. The campaign will run online, in bus shelters, subways, and in local newspapers in English, Spanish, Yiddish, and Traditional and Simplified Chinese. A video version of the campaign featuring Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot will run online in English and Spanish.

“Vaccines are one of the best tools we have to prevent and reduce infectious diseases that cause sickness, hospitalization, and even death,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot. “Unfortunately, misinformation about the safety and efficacy of vaccines has caused some to delay or refuse vaccination. It’s crucial that all New Yorkers protect themselves and their loved ones against these preventable diseases by getting vaccinated.”

Vaccination not only protects the person receiving the vaccine, it also helps prevent the spread of disease and protects those most vulnerable to serious complications, including infants and young children, the elderly, pregnant persons and those with chronic conditions and weakened immune systems who may not be able to get vaccinated. With school approaching, the Health Department also reminds parents that vaccines are required for children to attend child care and schools. Beginning this school year, all children attending school or child care in New York City must receive all scheduled vaccines unless they have a valid medical exemption. Under a new state law, religious exemptions will no longer be accepted in place of vaccination.

Vaccination Recommendations   Everyone 6 months of age and older, should receive an annual flu vaccine.  Pregnant persons should get the flu and Tdap vaccines to protect themselves and their newborns from influenza and other infections.  Children are recommended to receive vaccines protecting them against harmful diseases such as measles, mumps, chicken pox (varicella), invasive pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenzae disease and whooping cough by 18 months. Starting at age 4 children entering kindergarten need two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps

and rubella) and chickenpox vaccines, and a DTaP and polio booster.  Adolescents also need the HPV vaccine to protect against HPV-related cancers, the meningitis vaccine to protect against bacteria and viruses that cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and the Tdap vaccine to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.  Adults need a Tdap vaccine to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis if they did not get one as a child. All adults need a tetanus booster shot every 10 years.  Adults at high risk for acquiring hepatitis A virus (HAV) need hepatitis A vaccine. Those at high risk include: travelers to countries where HAV is common, men who have sex with other men (MSM), people who use recreational drugs, those with unstable housing or who experience homelessness and people with chronic or long-term liver disease such as hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection.  Adults at high risk for acquiring hepatitis B virus (HBV) need hepatitis B vaccine. Risk factors for acquiring HBV include: those whose sex partners have hepatitis B, MSM, those who inject drugs, travelers to countries where HBV is common, people with hepatitis C virus infection, those with chronic liver disease, individuals with HIV and people who are in jail or prison.  Adults 50 years and older need the shingles (herpes zoster) vaccine.  Adults with certain medical conditions and those who are 65 years and older need to be vaccinated against pneumococcal disease.

Within the last 10 years, communities throughout New York City have experienced outbreaks of meningococcal disease, pertussis (whooping cough),mumps, measles and hepatitis A. Every year, more New Yorkers die from influenza and pneumonia than from any other infection.

Despite the effectiveness and importance of vaccines, only about three-quarters of young children ages 19 months to 3 years have received all recommended vaccines.

Low vaccine coverage is associated with an increased risk of transmission of vaccinepreventable diseases and outbreaks.

Adolescents should receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to protect against six HPV-related cancers, tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough vaccine (Tdap) and meningococcal (MenACWY) vaccine, at the same visit and on

time at 11 years of age. Adults should speak to their doctors about the vaccines they need based on their age and risk factors and about keeping their vaccine records upto-date by using the Citywide Immunization Registry. “As parents our first priority should be to keep our children healthy and one of the most crucial ways to do that is to vaccinate against infectious diseases.

Vaccinating your school age children keeps them safe and contributes to overall public safety. Thank you to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for your outreach efforts on this important issue,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “I commend the efforts of the New York City Department of Health for reminding

In the U.S, roughly 6 out of every 1,000 babies die before their first birthday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Detroit, that number has been closer to 14 in recent years. Similarly, black breastfeeding rates lag national averages, with only 30% of black infants in Michigan being exclusively breastfed through three months, compared to 47% nationally.

The FIT’s are comprised of local community members affiliated with organizations such as Brilliant Detroit and Focus: HOPE, and are bringing problems to be “hacked” and creative solutions to further develop at the event.

STUDENT ACES NONPROFIT Hosts Workshop

Just in time for school to start, about 55 coaches at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami did some learning of their own with the help of the Student ACES (athletics, community, education) nonprofit.

Founded in 2013 by Buck Martinez and his daughter, Krissy Webb, the nonprofit works to inspire and develop high school student athletes to become young men and women of character, honor and integrity. The nonprofit hosts workshops at high schools across South Florida, with the support of Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), and has already mentored about 4,700 students since January.

“FPL supports organizations that break down barriers to opportunities for students; after all, these young men and women are the state’s future leaders and it’s critical they have the tools to thrive,” said Pam Rauch, FPL’s vice president of external affairs and economic development.

In the past two years alone, with the support of FPL, Student ACES has mentored roughly 4,000 students in Miami-Dade County.

But the Columbus workshop, held Aug. 8, was different.

This time, the school principal, David Pugh, asked Martinez to host a workshop for the coaches. “It was an awesome experience for the coaches to interact and work through some of the tough issues they wrestle with in the classroom and the athletic fields,” said Pugh. “I brought Charles because I wanted to have the coaches hear from a player. I wanted him to talk about little league, high school, college and the professional level and the values a coach should be teaching,” Martinez said. “The coaches loved him.”

he looks forward to mentoring even more students this year. As part of a sponsorship agreement with FPL, Martinez plans to train 37,600 high school student athletes by the end of 2023, many of whom will be in MiamiDade County.

The nonprofit conducts workshops at high schools across South Florida, with the support of Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), and has already mentored about 4,700 students since January.

Journeys, the retail leader in teen apparel and footwear, in partnership with adidas Originals, has announced "Destination: Atlanta," a free, one-day celebration of music, culture, and the city of Atlanta taking place Saturday, September 28 at the Georgia Freight Depot in downtown Atlanta.
