N AT ION AL NAACP D EN OUN C E S fac e b ook ov er privacy The NAACP joined the National Action Network (NAN) and the National Urban League (NUL) in calling out Facebook over ongoing concerns regarding the platforms’ repeated shortcomings in safeguarding users against unregulated influence from bad actors, both foreign and domestic.

Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), along with Rev. Al Sharpton, President and Founder of National Action Network (NAN), and Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League (NUL), jointly signed the letter and delivered it to Zuckerberg via email on Friday, October 18, 2019.

In December 2018, the NAACP led a #LogOutFacebook digital protest in response to the Tech company’s history of lack of concern for privacy, complicity in the spread of misinformation and the utilization of Facebook for propaganda promoting disingenuous portrayals of African Americans.

“The repeated offense of allowing bad actors and partisan firms to target users of colors and the most vulnerable reveal an egregious habit and dangerous characteristic of Mark Zuckerberg and his company,” said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO. “We cannot afford nor tolerate another attempt to dismantle our nation through improper political interference and manipulation.”

CALLS FOR WITHDRAWAL OF M E N A S H I N O M I N AT I O N The NAACP sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee opposing the nomination of Steven Menashi to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and calling upon the White House to withdraw the nomination. He has used the lowest common denominator of this country’s history—racism—to subvert democracy. We must continue to call out his behavior and fight back against any and all attempts to normalize racism.”

The White House must withdraw this nomination. Even in the Trump era, we must expect a threshold level of decency and fairness in our judges.”

For some, arriving to a point in life where you can openly admit that you’re in need of mental health services is notable and commendable. Recognizing that exposing some painful things in your past in an effort to heal is a first step many want to take but just aren’t comfortable in doing so. Within the African American community, one of the biggest hindrances includes opening up to a therapist that neither looks like them, nor can relate culturally. This is something Tomina Ward can attest to all too well. An accomplished Career Counselor, Ward shares that in the past she has sought the assistance of a mental health clinician, having had experiences with both a Black therapist and a white one. While they both rendered effective services, Ward noticed a stark difference in the experiences.

I want to help change the narrative. I want to give my family and others another resource to validate that they are not alone in their struggles; this is the reason for the app.”

Black Therapy Love provides a place where those seeking services can interact with therapists, counselors, and coaches opening the dialogue and bridging the gap between mental health professionals and the Black community. The app is also considered user friendly, allowing for user messaging, access to professionals’ profiles and the ability to get to know a bit more of their why.

If there is a new topic the community wants to see, it can be updated on the app for discussion,” she added.

In addition to the discussion, Black Therapy Love features a ‘Collab’ tab for artists, allowing businesses to advertise their services, films and songs.

Though it’s in its infancy stages,

the app has already gotten rave reviews through its followers on Instagram with comments like “Much needed,” and “This is an amazing idea.” Ward is excited about the app’s release and the impact it can make in the Black community and mental health world. When asked how she’s feeling about it all, Ward said “I’m nervous and excited. My purpose is helping people, and that makes me feel good.”

“When I walked in and saw she looked like me, I just felt at ease.

I was happy to see her. I was like ‘she’s gonna understand me, and I’m looking forward to her helping me’.” This sense of comfort was crucial for Ward and reassuring.

As time progressed, Ward found herself at a place in her life where she would again need the guidance of a mental health clinician, however she wasn’t too sure where to start her search.

“I Googled Black therapists, and I was having difficulty trying to find one.” Usually when she has difficulties of this nature, Ward shared that she normally turns to the trusted App Store, looking for solutions that may be resting there. “I immediately went to search for an app that would connect the Black community with Black therapists. I couldn’t find one,” she recalls. This experience motivated her to take matters into her own hands, becoming the Founder and CEO of an app that would bridge the gap between potential clients and mental health clinicians. It’s called Black Therapy Love.

“I understand the stigma in the Black community. I understand how we don’t want to share our personal business as this translates to some of why we sometimes suffer in silence.

night's #1 original series across all of broadcast and cable for African-American women and total viewers. It has averaged a 1.54 rating W25-54 and 1,655,000 total viewers. The series' W25-54 rating is up +2% over last year and it's the #6 original scripted series on ad-supported cable (W25-54).

At the outset of production DuVernay established an inclusive initiative to hire an all-female directorial team. Since its debut in September 2016, 35 women have directed episodes of "Queen Sugar," 32 of whom made their television directorial debut on the series. The inclusive hiring extends in front of and behind the camera, with a dozen female department heads from casting and

production design to post-production and music supervision.

The overwhelming response to the series was also evident each week on social media demonstrating the strong connection

viewers have to seeing multi-faceted portrayals of an African-American family on television. entrepreneur, author, and wife of NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson – is among the headliners of the prestigious roster of faith and public health leaders and activists for the 6th annual Healthy Churches 2020 National Conference Nov. 19-22 in Charlotte, The Balm In Gilead, Inc. announced.

Johnson’s presentation is entitled “Stigma! The Voice of a Child of God, Wife, Mother & Caretaker.” The Healthy Churches 2020 Conference is the only national forum of its kind to bridge faith and public health.

Planners are anticipating more than 500 attendees during the three-day capacity-building training conference in Charlotte, NC at the Sheraton Hotel.

“The addition of Ms. Cookie Johnson to our stage is a major game-changer that significantly advances the mission of Healthy Churches 2020,” said Dr. Pernessa C.
