N AT I O N A L RAND CORPORATION To Conduct Research On Bias BiasSync, a start-up SaaScompany whose mission is to create better outcomes for organizations by using science-based tools to reduce the negative impact of bias, has commissioned the RAND Corporation to conduct research on how unconscious bias impacts business and workplace environments.

BiasSync's science-based, proprietary tool launched this week to help businesses and government agencies assess and manage unconscious bias, with the purpose of creating more fair and respectful workplaces. BiasSync commissioned an independent research study from RAND, a nonprofit, nonpartisan Santa-Monica based research organization committed to the public interest. RAND conducts

research in a wide array of areas, including the role of bias in technology, research and analysis.

NEW STUDENT VOTERS Registered During Civics Week

Mayor de Blasio announced today that the City has registered 18,233 first-time student voters. The effort was part of the Administration’s youth voter registration drive during the City’s first-ever Civics Week, which took place the week of April 8th. Hundreds of high schools hosted events during Civics Week – an initiative of Mayor de Blasio’s 10-Point democracy agenda announced as part of the Mayor’s 2017 State of the City and known as DemocracyNYC. This initiative aims to increase civic engagement and strengthen democracy locally and nationally.

“With Civics Week, we’re helping schools mold the future leaders of our City and reminding students that their voices are powerful and can effectuate change,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Whether it’s hosting a town hall, participating in Participatory Budgeting or registering to vote, students have a real opportunity to strengthen our democracy. I encourage everyone to get involved.”

“Our young people are the future leaders of our City and our nation, and I’m excited that a record 18,000 students registered to vote and make their voices heard as part of our first-ever Civics Week,” said Schools Chancellor Richard A. The 18,233 newly registered student voters attend 258 New York City public schools, as well as college campuses and non-public schools. The Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit organized voter registration drives at approximately 70 schools, resulting in over 63 percent of the more than 18,000 registrations citywide.

Civics Week, which took place the week of April 8th, is part of the Department of Education’s Civics for All initiative, which teaches students about the foundations of American government and the democratic process.

During Civics Week, students at public schools had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities including youth voter registration drives, Participatory Budgeting for their schools, public speaking competitions, and town halls on issues that matter to them and their communities.

The next election in New York City will be the Primary Election on Tuesday, June 25th. The primary ballot includes races for Queens District Attorney, City Council District 45 and judicial offices throughout the city. New Yorkers who need to register to vote can do so online, by mail or in person at a New York City Board of Elections office by May 31st to be eligible to vote in the primary election. New Yorkers who are interested in registering to vote, need to update their existing registration, or want more information on the upcoming election can call 311 or visit voting.nyc.

Students at 48 high schools participated in the DOE’s first-ever Participatory Budgeting Project. A lead teacher at each of the participating schools guided the school community through the process, and students identified projects and organized votes on project proposals.

Participating schools had $2,000 to spend on chosen projects.

During Civics Week, schools also participated in SoapboxNYC, a K-12 public speaking competition that calls on students to speak out on issues that affect them and their communities.

Students participated in the City’s Civics for All poster competition and created posters that speak to important social issues. Guest speakers including New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, Deputy Mayor Phil Thompson, Assembly Member Cathy Nolan, and Council Member Mark Treyger visited a variety of schools to encourage public engagement.

To support Civics Week and participating schools, the Department of Education developed instructional guides to help schools host voter registration drives and design activities that encourage civic participation.

Civics Week is part of the Department of Education’s Civics for All initiative.

The DOE believes civic education is an essential part of every students’ core academic program. The goal of Civics for All, a new initiative announced in Spring 2018, is to provide resources, programming, and professional learning to all of our schools with models for civic education that are interactive, projectbased, and relevant to students’ lives. In addition to participatory budgeting, the initiative includes a DOE developed K-12 civics curriculum, increased opportunities for student civic engagement, a student voter registration drive, and school partnerships with community organizations.

Research has shown that paid time off helps increase productivity, strengthens families, helps prevent burnout and improves employee retention. The United States is the only industrialized nation that does not mandate any paid time off, including paid holidays. Nationally, one in four full-time, middle-income workers gets no paid time off at all.

The updated estimate of nearly 1 million New Yorkers who would benefit from paid time off incorporates additional New York City-specific data from the Community Service Society’s (CSS) 2018 Unheard Third Survey, which was not yet available when the paid personal time proposal was first announced in January. Incorporating CSS’ most recent data provides a richer and more robust estimate of the uncovered population.

At Black Colleges, Baseball Teams Are Missing Before each game, Clarence Carter III glances across the diamond as the opposing team warms up. He peeks in the dugout, scans the outfield and takes inventory around the infield during batting practice, counting how many African-Americans he can spot on the other team.

This is not an unusual drill for AfricanAmericans playing in the major leagues, where their numbers have dwindled in recent decades, or in the similarly exclusive world of youth travel baseball.

But what makes this exercise striking is that Carter, a junior infielder at Bethune-Cookman University, plays for — and often against — one of America’s historically black colleges.

“It did catch me by surprise; I’m not going to lie,” said Carter, who transferred to Bethune-Cookman from a community college in Fullerton, Calif.

“I would have thought coming to an H.B.C.U. there would be more black people, but things aren’t always what you expect.”

There is a litany of reasons African-Americans have turned away from baseball.

While baseball’s struggles to attract African-American talent and fans are well documented, the depth of the issue comes into sharper relief for teams in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, a group of historically black colleges and universities stretching from Maryland to Florida. At each of the nine MEAC colleges that compete in baseball, the baseball teams often feature more white and Latino players than AfricanAmericans.

Consider the standard-bearer for the conference, Bethune-Cookman, which has won 19 MEAC championships and plays its home games at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, the same field where Robinson first suited up for a game after signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers. At times this season, the Wildcats have not started a single

African-American player.

There is a litany of reasons AfricanAmericans have turned away from baseball, including the decimation of youth programs in areas where there historically have been large AfricanAmerican communities and the sport’s ballooning costs — both for equipment (a top-shelf aluminum bat runs about $325) and exposure (participating on travel teams can cost thousands of dollars a year).

Billy Hawkins, a University of Houston professor who has written extensively on race and college sports, said young black athletes have become less likely to gravitate toward baseball because they — and their parents — have an easier time envisioning success in football and basketball. The numbers reflect that: African-Americans comprised 7.8 percent of opening day roster spots in the majors this year, down from the peak of 18.7 percent in 1981.

“Major League Baseball hasn’t developed a cultural relevance similar to those other leagues,” Hawkins said of the N.B.A. and N.F.L. “These other leagues have prospered in attracting black players, but also having a blackness like you’d talk about in music or dress. For some reason, M.L.B. hasn’t evolved similarly.”

To stay competitive, H.B.C.U.s have had to cast a wider net. Lynn Thompson, the athletic director at Bethune-Cookman since 1990, said he saw the start of the decline of baseball growing up in Daytona Beach in the late 1960s; in neighborhoods where his friends once rode their bikes to play sandlot ball, redevelopment paved over ball fields in favor of basketball courts and parking lots.

Bethune-Cookman began recruiting out of Florida’s deep pool of Latino players early on, and Thompson said that he has given the same marching orders each time he hires a baseball coach, something he did for the sixth time last

August.

“We just happen to be historically black; we’re not exclusively black,” Thompson said. “Our job is to tell the great story of

This is a complicated stance, and it has drawn criticism. It is not unusual for H.B.C.U. football teams to recruit white kickers or punters, or to look farther afield to fill out their tennis and golf teams. But baseball can strike a different chord, particularly because of the legacy of the Negro Leagues and Robinson’s stature as a civil rights icon.

“We’ve taken some heat from some people,” Thompson said. “But look, we’re Division I, and if you’re a high school kid and you’re playing right field and batting .198 and you think just because we’re an H.B.C.U., you think you ought to be able to get a scholarship, you’re wrong.”

He continued: “When you come to bat against the University of Miami and this guy’s throwing 96 miles per hour with a slider that falls off the earth, you’ve got to be able to perform. Ain’t no excuses then.”

is 79 percent African-American, it is nevertheless a melting pot. This year, there are players who are Dominican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Colombian, Peruvian, Mexican and Jamaican; there also are white players, who make up about half the 28-player roster.

The team’s first-year coach, Jonathan Hernandez, 33, grew up in Hialeah, Fla., a heavily Cuban community near Miami, where he was a product of Major League Baseball’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities youth program. He has put together a promising recruiting class — including two African-American players — that is ranked 60th among Division I programs, according to one analysis. Bethune-Cookman is the only H.B.C.U. on that list. “I know that we’ve got to be able to give black players more opportunities,” Hernandez said. “There are definitely talented baseball players out there, and we have to find them.”

Finding them, though, is getting harder; N.C.A.A. data from 2018 showed only 4 percent of college players are African-American. And when an H.B.C.U. identifies an exceptional black prospect, it soon finds itself competing against

At Black Colleges, Baseball Teams Are Missing both elite programs with more resources and professional teams dangling signing bonuses.

Sherman Reed, in his ninth season as the coach at Coppin State, said that he commiserates with a handful of African-American college coaches, like Edwin Thompson at Eastern Kentucky and Kerrick Jackson at Southern University, about the difficulties of recruiting.

“Economics plays such a big part of this,” Reed said. “More than people want to say.”

Showcase events that gather the best talent, for example, can cost about $800 for a player to attend, and include as many as 1,000 players — but

perhaps only a dozen African-Americans, Reed said. Of those, he said, eight might have major-college tools.

“It’s a rat race to get those kids,” Reed said. “We like the kid, but Penn State is there and likes the kid, Vanderbilt is there and likes the kid. They always ask, ‘Coach, how many guys have you got drafted?’ I tell them, ‘If I get you, you’ll be the first one.’”

At the other end of the food chain, he said, are the emails and phone calls from African-American high school players who Reed believes should be aiming lower than Division I. “Instead of ignoring the kid’s video, I try to be truthful,” Reed said. “I might say, ‘There’s some tools I like, but there’s a good junior college in your area where

you can learn your trade.’”

The sweet spot for Reed works something like this: a tip from his extensive web of contacts about a player who, for whatever reason, has fallen through the cracks. Someone like Jahmon Taylor, a live-armed pitcher from Altamonte Springs, Fla., whom Rickie Weeks Sr. — the father of a former big leaguer and top overall pick out of Southern University — said was not being recruited. Or a player like Nazir McIlwain, a first baseman from Passaic, N.J., who could not afford the admission fee to a showcase that might have showed off his sweet swing to bigger programs.

Both are seniors at Coppin State now. Taylor owns the record for career strikeouts, and McIlwain set the one for hits. But they are among only six AfricanAmericans on Reed’s current roster.

Back at Bethune-Cookman, Hernandez hopes for a similar progression for Khalil Smith, a freshman outfielder from Southfield, Mich. Smith starred on an entirely African-American team in high school, and he was close to Demetrius Sims, a minor leaguer in the Miami Marlins organization who starred at Bethune-Cookman.

HE ALTH S tudents Win I NNO VAT I O N C H A L L E N G E To Serena and Venus Williams' Yetunde Price Resource Center (YPRC), in partnership with the Compton Unified School District (CUSD) and the Carrot Group, announced the winning teams in the Mission: Impact Challenge - Connected Community. In this Challenge, CUSD Middle and High School students formed teams to dream up innovative, feasible solutions using their Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) skills to identify signs of people experiencing emotional trauma and build a community to support healing. The winners of the tenweek Innovation Challenge were announced yesterday at CUSD's 3rd Annual STEAMFest at Dollarhide Community Center in Compton. A distinguished panel of five judges, comprised of experts in trauma and technology, reviewed the presentations from each of the 12 semi-final teams (six from high school and six from middle school).

Their scores, in combination with the votes from the event attendees, determined the Grand Prize winner and two Runner-Up teams at both school categories. The teams were scored based on originality of the idea; use and application of S.T.E.A.M. knowledge; feasibility; and potential impact.

"I have been so impressed with all the Compton Unified students and teachers who participated in this Challenge," commented Serena Williams. "A huge congratulations to the winning teams. The technology solutions they thought of to help people in our community are incredible. Providing resources for people suffering from trauma is an issue that I care deeply about, and I appreciate that Compton students took this Challenge so seriously."

THE SIX WINNING TEAMS AND THEIR IDEAS ARE: HIGH SCHOOL GRAND PRIZE TEAM: Dominguez High School students Andres Favela, Christopher Gilliam, Hilda Huerta, and Alex Perez developed a mobile phone application that uses A.I. to recognize someone experiencing trauma.

RUNNER-UP TEAM: Compton Early College students Ja'niya Gray and Yajaira Soto developed an implant in the arm to help prevent panic/ anxiety attacks.

Clinton Elementary School students Perla Beltran and Demetrius Ramirez developed an interactive, computerized avatar that can offer treatment options for medical trauma.

RUNNER-UP TEAM: Clinton Elementary

School students Rodolfo Camarena, Eduardo Gonzalez, Isaac Hernandez, Joshua Muniz, and Joaquin Ochoa developed a portable machine that identifies the types of trauma someone is experiencing and offers solutions.

RUNNER-UP TEAM: Clinton Elementary School students Diana Bojorquez, Ivan Moreno, Alicia Ramirez, Mario Rosas, and Joseph Saldana developed an application that connects someone experiencing physical, sexual or domestic abuse to a health professional.

"I am very proud of our Compton Scholars and staff who have taken on the Challenge. These students exemplify what Compton Unified School District endeavors to foster in every student -- scholarship and human compassion," said Dr. Darin Brawley, superintendent, CUSD. "Through the YPRC/Carrot Group's Connected Community Challenge, our students have unleashed their

inner creator and innovator to tackle a problem that is difficult for children and adults alike. The creative solutions ideated by these brilliant students are not only impressive, but they can make a tangible, positive impact on the lives of those suffering from trauma."

In the U.S. alone, 7 out of 10 people have faced some form of trauma.

Traumatic experiences such as

homelessness, gang violence, and bullying can have a lasting impact on physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Many people who suffer from trauma are unaware of its lingering effects.

The stories of impact across the students, faculty, administrators, and partners is overwhelming. A Williams Sisters Fund Project, the Yetunde Price Resource Center

(YPRC) collaborates with partner organizations to offer traumainformed programs that promote individual and community-wide healing and resiliency. The Yetunde Price Resource Center was created to honor its namesake. Yetunde was the oldest of five sisters, the youngest being Venus and Serena Williams. When Yetunde was tragically killed in an act of senseless violence, she left behind three children, siblings, parents and a community that mourned her. As a result, the Price/Williams family wanted to ensure that anyone who has been impacted by violence could access resources in order to flourish. YPRC works to ensure that individuals who have experienced direct or indirect acts of senseless violence have complete access to existing resources and that where there is a dearth in services, new programming is created. NATIONAL BLACK THEATRE Takes Over 125 th Street this June Dr. Barbara Ann Teer’s National Black Theatre (NBT) closes out its golden anniversary season with the world premiere of 125th & FREEdom, a five-hour public performance dance project by Ebony Noelle Golden this June. Written, choreographed and directed by Golden, the piece will make Harlem’s iconic 125th Street its stage as it explores the question: “If Harriet Tubman were alive today, how would she free Black people?” The event is a part of the institution’s new programmatic initiative, NBT Beyond Walls, which sees the esteemed Harlem institution presenting performances throughout the city, country and internationally.

Golden, an artist, cultural strategist and the founder of Betty’s Daughter Arts Collaborative, is the inaugural SOUL directing resident in NBT’s SOUL Series L.A.B. (Liberating Artistic Bravery), a contemporary residency program that mentors creatives using NBT pedagogy.

Composed of 16 movements and featuring a New Orleans-style brass band, the choreopoetic performance will take place at 11 sites as pop-up installations across the corridor of 125th Street from the East River to the Hudson River each Saturday in June, beginning on June 8. 125th & FREEdomsees a victorious, but battleweary tribe of nomads led by Tubman’s descendent on an epic journey to a land

of promised liberation. Fusing song and poetry with choreography based on historic and current Black social dances, the piece will be an immersive, participatory cultural experience that is equal parts ritual performance, processional and protest.

The cast includes Audrey Hailes, Courtney Cook, Azusa “SHESHE” Dance, Alec Stephens III and Jason O’Neal. Paris Weeden, Candace Haynes, Ariel Blackwood, Ava McCoy, Everton Ricketts, Zenni Reach, and Trevor Latez Hayes are also featured.

Helping Golden bring this vision to life are a talented team of creatives, including Alphonso Horne (musical composition), Izmir Ickbal (scenic design), Dominique Fawn Hill (costumes), Belynda Hardin (props), Jaimé Dzandu (associate choreographer), Nina Angela Mercer (dramaturg) and Vir-Amicus and Kirrin Tubo (production managers). Additionally, NBT has partnered with Harlem Needle Arts to have a quilt created by Ifa Felix; the piece will also feature work by visual artist Anthony J. Thomas.

“I am full of gratitude to be able to share this work in deep partnership with NBT, Harlem, and the brilliant artists who have joined the journey. I truly believe that we are walking in the legacy that Dr. Teer and so many other artists cultivated for us,” said Golden. “May we continue

The June premiere of 125th & FREEdom comes as NBT, New York City’s oldest continually run Black-owned theater, celebrates its Founders Month. Born on June 18, 1937, Dr. Barbara Ann Teer was a lion of New York City theater who founded NBT in 1968 and bought its building, which became the first revenue generating, sustainable Black arts complex in 1983.

Now helmed by Sade Lythcott, Dr. Teer’s daughter, and Artistic Director Jonathan McCrory, and in anticipation of its building’s imminent redevelopment, NBT is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a

series of productions in spaces outside of the theater, including 125th & FREEdom.

“We are excited to conclude our 50th season with the world premiere of Ebony’s ground-breaking work 125th & FREEdom. We chose to help develop this piece and position it as a punctuation to the half century of ground-breaking work NBT has done in Harlem,” said Lythcott. “The piece speaks to the spirit of the roots of NBT and uses the same devises (ritual, dance, poetry, music, socio-economic justice) my mother used in the late ’60s and ’70s to awaken the SOUL of our community. With this show NBT is recommitting to Harlem and to our communities all over the world our steadfast commitment to continue to Keep Soul Alive for the generations to come!”

M A R Y W I L S O N C o m i n g T o C a f e C a r ly l e I n J u n e Carrabba’s Italian Mary Wilson was in Las Vegas when we talked. As a former Supreme, Ms. Wilson expressed her love of being a Supreme but assured me she is enjoying her life now as a solo artist. Wilson is performing her own music, stepping out from the background into the forefront as a performer in her own right. She has also assured that artist rights are respected.

“When Rock & Roll and Rhythm & Blues were popular, artist contracts back in the 1950s were horrific. The 1960s brought Motown and contracts improved. Artists in the ’70s and ’80s got paid a little better.

Each generation things got better but still horrible. The Music Modernization Act (MMA) was legislation I was part of with other artists, who were also responsible for getting legislation passed on October 11, 2018. The Music Modernization Act assured that artists starting in 1972 who were not paid when their music appeared on radio, Internet, digital, etc., finally got paid. The generation of Gloria Lynne and Ruth Brown never did get paid so their families should look into getting their share,” remarked the activist singer.

This year also Mary Wilson is introducing her new book entitled “Supreme Glamour,” which is due to be released in the UK sometime in May and in the US in September. “'Supreme Glamour” will be my 3rd book. My First was “Dream Girls: My Life as a Supreme.” The second was entitled “Supreme State: Someday We’ll Be Together,” the third book was a combination of the first two books with updated chapters.

My new book is actually the fourth, although I say my third. “Supreme Glamour” is a coffee table book based on the gowns the Supremes wore. I also discuss the glamorous part of the Supreme’s career,” said Mary, who mentioned the Supremes purchased their own gowns. She continued: “Many of our gowns have been lost. We

moved around so stored them in various places, but somehow or another, some of the gowns went missing. Therefore, I ended up buying some of them back via Ebay. Fans have found them for me and gave them back. One woman contacted me stating she was traveling in France and saw a beautiful gown at a yard sale wherein she discovered my name on the label. I am still searching for those missing gowns. Therefore, I dispute when people say they got these gowns via a good source. Well, that source wasn’t from me or Diana Ross!”

Mary is going to be appearing at the Cafe Carlyle in NY for 2 weeks, from May 28June 8th. “People are used to me being a background singer so they do not know what I really sound like. I used to do ballads on our live shows, so I produced a Jazz American Songbook Show and recorded it in SF. I perform it and people seem to love it. It is like a dream come true performing at Cafe Carlyle where I can finally show off my talents. My dreams are coming true. Some have taken 50 years but now it is all about me as a performer. It is a whole different kind of joy for me,” remarked Wilson excitedly.

“People need to believe in themselves and stand up for things we think aren’t right.

Fame prevented me from attending college but I realize education is important. It’s sad to see that the things I learned in school are no longer taught today. Some of those courses need to be reinstated. Americans need to get behind the system of education so our children are guaranteed a future,” expressed Mary with great passion.

“At 75 years old, I am not trying to compete with the Mariah Careys or the Mary J Bliges’ who are just wonderful. But as a singer you get older and maybe I’m not at the top of the charts as when a Supreme, but I am blessed to put music out there and as long as people hear me, I am happy,” stated the former Supreme.

Mary participated on a panel at the LBJ Library Museum in Austin, TX, where the participants discussed what’s happening in music. She also attended a summit on ‘Race Relations in America.’ The LBJ Library Museum is also showcasing a Motown Exhibit that people may find worth visiting.
