MATCH DAY : Adtalem Medical Schools Driving Diversity As the United States faces a shortage of an estimated 120,000 physicians by 2030, tens of thousands of medical students across the nation and abroad last week learned where and how they’ll be helping to address the problem. Match Day, as it’s known, now carries increased significance as medical school students match with residencies and fellowships in the US. And, with nearly 25% of all US doctors graduating from international medical schools (IMGs), those institutions are driving positive change in the US healthcare system.

Adtalem Global Education’s medical schools, American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) and Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM), had 946 students match.

At AUC, located in Sint Maarten, 338 students matched, with representation in hospitals across the US, but it’s what they do after they match that’s most significant. Sixty percent of AUC graduates choose to practice as primary care physicians, a rate nearly 25 percent greater than graduates of mainland US medical schools, and in the area of the greatest expected doctor shortage (35,000 by 2025).

AUC also recently announced the September 2019 launch of a new UK-based medical education program to help bring more doctors into global healthcare systems “When they match, AUC students bring their global healthcare experience and viewpoint with them as they make a difference in rural, low-income and shortage regions in the US – addressing workforce needs in critical areas across the country,” said AUC Executive Dean, Heidi Chumley, M.D. “Having a truly global outlook and perspective is increasingly important in our nation’s diverse healthcare community, it’s something that informs our students and drives them to pursue those opportunities to serve their communities.”

The school announced 82 black/AfricanAmerican students and 61 Hispanic students matched, with the total RUSM match numbers reaching 608. “RUSM students who matched aren’t just helping to fill the nation’s doctor shortage, they’re helping to drive a necessary shift in physician diversity,” said RUSM Dean and Chancellor, William F. Owen, Jr., M.D., FACP. “Our nation’s medical schools have an obligation to nurture diversity, it is crucial to the wellbeing of underserved and underrepresented populations. The low representation of black/African-American and Hispanic doctors contributes to adverse and unequal health outcomes across America, and RUSM is committed to making an impactful change in this important area.”

Diversity among medical students and physicians is another health care system shortfall. Last year, the graduating classes of each US medical school had, on average, just eight black/African-American students and even fewer Hispanics and Latinos. In spite of these groups accounting for more than 31 percent of the US population, they make up less than 11 percent of US medical school graduates. RUSM, located in Barbados, is bucking the trend, graduating 83 black/African-American students and 51 Hispanic students last year alone. The medical school has made increasing physician diversity a top priority, focusing on

Richmond (D-LA-02), released the following statement in response to the news that the Trump administration is rescinding guidance meant to promote racial diversity in higher education that was originally issued by the Obama administration.

“Yet again Donald Trump is showing his insecurity by targeting benign actions taken by the Obama administration to help bring modest positive changes to this country. If Barack Obama said the sky was blue, this current President would find a way to proclaim that it was in fact green.

"This shameful rescission of nonbinding guidelines issued by the previous administration’s Justice and Education Departments is a shot across the bow. It is aimed at

institutions and people in this country that want to see a more perfect and inclusive union. There is a compelling interest in having post-secondary institutions consider race when making admissions decisions. This has been affirmed and re-affirmed in court battles over the years. This administration is actively working to undo this well settled legal principle.

"The timing of this decision is no mistake as the administration prepares to announce a nominee to fill the upcoming vacancy on the Supreme Court. OPIOID LAWSUIT SEEKS COMPENSATION FROM DRUG MANUFACTURERS The Beasley Allen Firm and The CK Hoffler Firm filed a lawsuit against opioid manufacturers and distributors on behalf of the City of Flint, Michigan, alleging the marketing of these drugs in Flint contributed to the creation of the opioid epidemic, a public health and safety crisis in the City. Responding to the opioid crisis has required the City to sustain economic damages and to continue to bear a significant financial burden.

The City is represented by Tricia (CK) Hoffler, along with the Beasley Allen lawyers Rhon E. Jones, Navan Ward, Ryan Kral, Jeff Price and Will Sutton.

“We filed this lawsuit because, like other communities across the country, the opioid epidemic has left a terrible mark on the City of Flint,” said Flint Mayor Dr. Karen W. In 2016, Genesee County, where the City of Flint is located, had an opioid prescribing rate of 119.7 for every 100 people, according to data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The City of Flint is among the 10 Michigan cities with the highest number of drug-related overdose deaths between 2013 and 2015.

Nationally, opioids are responsible for killing more than 183,000 people since 1999, according to the CDC. In 2016 alone, 42,000 people in the U.S. died from opioid overdoses.

(Black PR Wire) - Washington, DC -- In cities like Washington, D.C., the arrival of self-driving vehicles has the potential to profoundly change how we get around. But whether those changes are for the better or the worse depends on the choices we make today, before these vehicles become widely available.

At the Union of Concerned Scientists, I’ve been studying the possibilities and the risks of autonomous vehicles. Our new study, “Where Are Self-Driving Cars Taking Us? Pivotal Choices That Will Shape DC’s Transportation Future,” analyzes how automated vehicles may impact congestion, public transit and job access in the region by 2040, focusing on what these impacts will mean for low-income communities and communities of color. One way or another, this technology is coming.

These cars are already being tested in many cities such as Phoenix and in the near future, Washington, DC. If we do not plan and set out thoughtful policies, driverless cars could exacerbate the challenges we see in transportation today—especially for black communities. Like any other technology, what results from these vehicles will largely depend on the rules we make for using them.

Without smart policies, autonomous vehicles could just mean more cars on the road, with the upside of greater access undermined by much greater congestion and exposure to unhealthy pollution, which disproportionately affects black

communities. We could also see the gaps in access to jobs between wealthy communities and low-income communities get even larger.

So how do we make sure these new technologies work for everyone, and don’t exacerbate problems we already face?

First, automated vehicles need to work in tandem with an expanded mass transportation system, not compete with it. Mass transit is more efficient and less costly than private vehicles and must play a central role in transportation in the decades to come. According to the Pew Research Center, black communities are three times more likely to use public transit than white communities. Automated vehicles will need to complement, not replace, public transit systems.

We need to ensure that driverless cars are not used by single individuals, but instead shared by two or more passengers. Local governments could help ensure this by expanding high-occupancy vehicle lanes, charging a fee to vehicles that only have one passenger, and adapting street design to emphasize passenger pick-up and drop-off instead of parking.​ Automated vehicles must be electric.

Otherwise, black communities could be hit with large increases in air pollution, not to mention the increase these vehicles will cause in global warming emissions.

We need to think carefully about how we will integrate automated

vehicles into our daily lives. We need to prioritize people, not vehicles, and craft strong policies to incentivize drivers and ride-sharing companies to use these vehicles in a way that reduces congestion, cuts emissions

and promotes equitable access.

There’s a new future of transportation around the corner—the only question is whether we’ll work today to make sure it’s a good one.

Importance of FAMILY CAREGIVERS in PATIENT OUTCOMES

Primary care providers agree, almost unanimously, that family caregivers play a vital role in patient care and in better patient outcomes, according to a new survey by AARP Research. However, providers say that time constraints and not knowing who or if there is a family caregiver prevent them from working with family caregivers for more of their patients.

“Today, forty million Americans are caring for aging parents, spouses and other loved ones, and close to half of them are responsible for medical tasks like injections and wound care,” said AARP Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer Nancy LeaMond. “Delivering more treatment on an outpatient basis means that family caregivers are critical members of patient care teams.

The entire health care system – from providers to hospitals to insurers – must recognize family caregivers’ critical role and understand that teaming up with them can improve health outcomes and quality of life for both patients and family caregivers.”

AARP Research conducted a survey of 400 primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants to understand their perceptions and interactions with family caregivers, their knowledge of available caregiver resources and potential barriers to

working with them.

Nearly all primary care providers (97 percent) said that family caregivers play an important part in patient care.

They reported that sharing patient information with caregivers leads to better patient outcomes, higher patient and caregiver satisfaction and lower hospital readmission rates.

The survey found that most providerfamily caregiver discussions involve instructions on managing medications, performing medical and nursing tasks, and arranging transportation, meals and other services.

NYC Launches CHILD BLOOD LEAD TESTING

The NYC Health Department has launched a public awareness campaign to encourage parents to get their children’s blood tested for lead. When exposed to lead, children can develop learning and behavior problems. While 80 percent of NYC children are tested at least once before their third birthday, only 50 percent of children are tested at both ages 1 and 2, as required by law.

In addition, the campaign encourages parents to report peeling paint to their landlord or call 311. Peeling lead paint is the primary source of exposure to lead for children in New York City.

The $1.5 million campaign will run through April and features citywide subway, radio and digital ads in English, Spanish, Russian, Yiddish, and Chinese languages. The ads will also be placed in bus shelters, salons and convenience stores in neighborhoods with lower blood lead testing rates and higher rates of elevated blood lead levels in young children. The campaign is part of LeadFreeNYC, the City’s roadmap to eliminating childhood lead exposure.

“Children under 3 are at greatest risk for lead exposure, because they explore the world by putting things in their mouths and their bodies are still growing,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot. “Most children exposed to lead do not look or feel sick. The only way to know for sure if they are exposed is by getting a blood lead test. We encourage all parents and guardians to get their children tested.”

Also in 2018, the Department began issuing quarterly lead surveillance reports which show a variety of indicators, including data on elevated blood lead levels in children who are in private versus public housing. The Department continues to collaborate with Medicaid managed care plans to improve testing compliance and provides annual testing guidance to health care providers.

The Health Department, through its Healthy Homes and Environmental Health Assessment and Communication Programs, has developed a comprehensive approach to address elevated blood lead levels in children and adults and to reduce lead hazards in homes and communities.

New York State law requires all children to be tested for lead at ages 1 and 2 by their health care provider. Providers must also assess children for exposure to lead until age 6 and test them if a risk of exposure is found.

The lead testing awareness campaign complements recent efforts by the City to reduce childhood lead exposure. Last July, the City announced a change in its lead-related inspection protocols, becoming one of the first jurisdictions in the country to conduct environmental investigations for all children under 18 years old with a blood lead level of 5 micrograms per deciliter or higher. Last year’s summit brought together Black women across ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age, political affiliation, socio- economic status, and gender experience. This year’s summit comes on the heels of a historic and transformative election in which Black women led the effort to elect the most diverse and female Congress in our nation’s history with more than 20 black women serving in Congress for the first time ever. The summit is excited to announce two inspiring speakers this year, women who have been leading efforts to improve the lives of Black women and all women in this country, Senator Kamala Harris (D- CA) and Former Georgia Minority Leader and Founder and Chair of Fair Fight Action Stacey Abrams.

The 2019 Power Rising Summit will also feature speakers across various industries including author, educator, and commentator, Melissa HarrisPerry, Congresswoman Karen Bass, Beverly E. Despite being enrolled in college at a higher rate than any other group, Black women are still paid 61 cents for every dollar paid to white men. The 2019 Power Rising Summit will celebrate the gains Black women have made from politics to the C- Suite, while also strategizing on how to leverage this power to create equity that recognizes the unique challenges facing Black women.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, food artist Nancy Baker, who has been featured on Food Network, will re-create a scene from a famous photo of the moon landing using a delicious combination of chocolates, cookies and colored sugars.

More than 25 authentically-costumed Star Wars characters from the 501st Empire City Garrison will descend on The Chocolate Expo and be available for selfies and other picture-taking opportunities from approximately 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Free face painting and balloon twisting activities for children will take place in the Museum’s Junior Jet Club.

Admission to all air & space exhibits is included with admission to The Chocolate Expo. Additionally, free admission to shows in the JetBlue Airways Planetarium (regularly $9/adult and $8/child) will be included, as well.

“Space Junk” will be shown at 12 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

March  Etta Gray Memorial Scholarship (Upstate South Carolina) The scholarship is open to Upstate South Carolina residents who are attending one of the qualifying technical or community colleges in the area.

The program will award up to $5,000.

Scholars Program The program identifies and provides scholarship and academic support for a total of 500 talented African American high school students who aspire to earn STEM degrees and to pursue careers in STEM fields. Closes March 12.  Oracle Corporate Scholars Program The program includes scholarship support for African American college sophomores or juniors who are pursuing a major in computer science or engineering, business, mathematics, marketing, or human resources and related majors. Successful candidates also will be offered internships at Oracle headquarters during the summer of 2019. Closes March 15.  The Shirley Levitin Scholarship (Franklin County, Ohio) The program is for 2018 graduates from Franklin County, Ohio, who participated in sanctioned athletics and maintained academic excellence, and awards up to $2,475. Closes March 17.  Ray Charles Endowed Scholarship

Juniors attending a UNCF-member institution are eligible for one of five need-based scholarships of up to $4,500. Closes March 18.  The Jay Charles Levine Scholarship (Michigan) The program offers up to $3000 to Michigan residents who are freshmen attending a UNCF-member institution. Closes March 19.  BNSF Railway Foundation Scholarship (Tarrant County, Texas) The program is open to Tarrant County residents who are majoring in business or finance at a UNCF-member institution, or any other fully accredited US located college or university. Closes March 22.  The Boulé Foundation Scholarship These $4,000 merit-based scholarships will be awarded to entering college freshmen students (fall 2019) of African American descent attending four-year, accredited, non-profit degree granting colleges and universities of their choice.
