The staff of New York Trend extends condolences to the family and friends on the passing of Aretha Louise Franklin. Aretha Franklin’s magical talents brought her world wide recognition. As one of the greatest musicians and singers of all time, Ms. Franklin sang before world leaders, religious leaders and fans around the world.

Her greatest performances will remain imprinted in our memories for eternity. We have lost a national treasure.

100 Black Men of America, Inc. expresses deep condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Aretha Louise Franklin. We join the world in mourning the passing of The Queen of Soul. Her life and legacy is unmatched.

In addition to being a musical icon, Aretha Franklin's music was the arc of the Civil Rights Movement. She was a constant supporter and fundraiser for Civil Rights initiatives who continuously and effectively used her platform for the cause of equality.

"The musical genius of Aretha Louise Franklin touched all races globally and crossed decades while transcending musical genres. Her voice was an American treasure that she shared during three Presidential inaugurations," stated Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. Chairman, 100 Black Men of America. The day was filled with reflection, personal stories and above all a message to serve a higher purpose, commemorating Aretha Franklin’s legacy as an iconic symbol of black pride, and The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) extends sincerest condolences to the family of Senator John McCain.

The President is in personal legal jeopardy and only a fraction of Kavanaugh’s record has been produced. To proceed now threatens the legitimacy of the Senate’s constitutional review and the Supreme Court itself.

What we do know of Judge Kavanaugh’s civil rights record is deeply troubling. His views on voting rights, affirmative action, equal employment, fair housing, and criminal justice could shut the courthouse door on justice for a generation. Senators need to fight this nomination with everything they have.

There is simply too much at stake.”

RETIREMENT OF JUSTICE ANTHONY KENNEDY On June 27, 2018, Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court. Immediately thereafter, the NAACP joined several civil rights organizations in demanding that the vote to confirm Justice Kennedy’s successor be delayed until a new Senate is seated.

TRUMP’S NOMINATION OF BRETT KAVANAUGH: On July 9, Donald Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. The NAACP is very familiar with Brett Kavanaugh because we opposed his nomination to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals 12 years ago. His terrible record as an appellate court judge has proven us correct. He has been a consistent voice for the wealthy and powerful and has ruled against civil rights, workers’ rights, consumer rights, and women’s rights.

He wrote the opinion allowing housing discrimination to be challenged using the disparate impact method. He made a difference in criminal justice cases. He provided a critical fifth vote in cases securing equal treatment for the LGBTQ community. Without him, the courthouse door could close on justice

At the NAACP’s 109th Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas from July 12 through 18, the Supreme Court confirmation battle was front and center. President Derrick Johnson’s remarks at the opening plenary session addressed the Kavanaugh nomination. At the Federal Legislative and Public Policy Workshop, VP for Advocacy Hilary Shelton discussed strategy and tactics for defeating the Kavanaugh nomination.

He is the author of a self-published book titled, "Preaching Through Unexpected Pain." His second book, "Forward Together: A Moral Message for the Nation," was published in 2014. His third book, "The Third Reconstruction: Moral Mondays, Fusion Politics, and the Rise of a New Justice Movement," was published in 2016.

In 2017, Rev. Dr. Barber was awarded an honorary doctorate from Drew University, his alma mater, and also delivered the university's sesquicentennial address at commencement exercises. Barber was also awarded an honorary doctorate from Occidental College.

Bahamas Tourism and Aviation Hosts INVESTMENT SUMMIT “The Bahamas is a vacation paradise, that’s well known, but the message I’d like each of you to take away from my short talk this morning is that when it comes to investing, “It’s Better In The Bahamas,” The Honourable Dionisio D’Aguilar, Minister of Tourism and Aviation for The Bahamas, told attendees at a luncheon during the recent 22nd Annual International African American Hotel Ownership and Investment Summit and Trade Show.

The Minister, who was presented with an Apex award for Distinguished Service at the closing banquet of the summit, provided his remarks at the Summits Annual Scholarship Award’s luncheon, sponsored by the Marriott, at the Marriott’s Biscayne Bay Hotel, Miami, Florida. He shared that in the last 12 months, The Bahamas have engaged in an overhaul of procedures and protocols to create an environment where the ease of doing business in The Bahamas is historically at its optimum best.

BUSINE S S WALMART Supports Future Leaders With $2 Million in Funding Walmart has announced $2 million

in grants to organizations working to expand internship opportunities for diverse youth populations, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). The grants build on previous Walmart funding to the two nonprofits, bringing the company’s total investment to more than $6 million over the last several years.

The funding will help provide career pathways on Capitol Hill for students and young professionals through education and hands-on experience in the nation’s capital.

“At Walmart, our commitment to diversity and inclusion spreads beyond our stores and out into the communities where our associates and customers live,” said Julie Gehrki, vice president of programs at Walmart. “Through relationships with organizations like CHCI and CBCF that reflect the diversity of American society, we can open the door to help more young people build a career in public service and expand the pipeline of talent on Capitol Hill and beyond by providing our future leaders with the tools needed for success.”

At a time when people of color currently make up less than 20 percent of U.S. lawmakers (Pew Research Center), these grants come at a critical moment. Although diverse populations represent approximately 36 percent of the population, only 7.1 percent are

senior staffers in the Senate, according to the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

The CBCF will receive a threeyear, $1 million grant to help prepare college students and young professionals for careers in public policy and advocacy. The funding will provide exposure to the development and implementation of national policies – from Capitol Hill to federal field offices – as well as support intern housing, monthly stipends, professional development and leadership training.

A three-year, $1 million grant to the CHCI will provide Latino undergraduates with paid summer or spring Congressional internships.

Through Walmart’s support, students will gain valuable work experience, benefit from a strong leadership development curriculum, participate in a community service project and interact with professionals and industry leaders in Washington, D.C. “The CBCF is committed to increasing diversity on Capitol Hill and in the public sector by creating a new generation of informed and engaged citizens and leaders,” said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Chair, CBCF Board of Directors. “Internships are a critical component toward building a career in public policy. Tropical weather in Florida is a way of life. The Sunshine State leads the nation in landfalling hurricanes with nearly 120.

Properly preparing for hurricane season now can save you and your employees unwanted stress when a storm is imminent. The key is having a plan in place when that time comes. Here are some tips from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to help get you going as we head into the heart of storm season.

Plan ahead:

 Ensure your employees’ contact information is up to date.  Have a plan in place to communicate after the storm passes, e.g. set up a telephone number with a message featuring updates to inform employees of the status of company operations.  Establish a safe area away from exterior glass windows and doors if you plan to shelter at your business.  Identify what you need to secure your building, important equipment and who will help; outline specific tasks and conduct a training session.  Bookmark FPL.com/outage and save 1-800-4OUTAGE to your cell phone to report and check the status of your restoration.  Download FPL’s Mobile App in the App Store or Google Play, or text the word "App" to MyFPL (69375).

Generator safety:

 Read and follow all the manufacturer’s guidelines when using a generator to avoid dangerous shortcuts and ensure safe operation.  DO NOT directly connect your generator to your business’s breaker or fuse box. Power 10 | NewYorkTrendnyc
