The staff of New York Trend extends condolences to the family and friends on the passing of Aretha Louise Franklin. Aretha Franklin’s magical talents brought her world wide recognition. As one of the greatest musicians and singers of all time, Ms. Franklin sang before world leaders, religious leaders and fans around the world. Her greatest performances will remain imprinted in our memories for eternity. We have lost a national treasure. May she rest in peace.

100 Black Men of America, Inc. expresses deep condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Aretha Louise Franklin. We join the world in mourning the passing of The Queen of Soul. Her life and legacy is unmatched. In addition to being a musical icon, Aretha Franklin's music was the arc of the Civil Rights Movement. She was a constant supporter and fundraiser for Civil Rights initiatives who continuously and effectively used her platform for the cause of equality. "The musical genius of Aretha Louise Franklin touched all races globally and crossed decades while transcending musical genres. Her voice was an American treasure that she shared during three Presidential inaugurations," stated Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. Chairman, 100 Black Men of America. "Ms. Franklin's life and music empowered women, gave youth an example of overcoming hardships, energized a movement, and has resonated with people of many ages." The day was filled with reflection, personal stories and above all a message to serve a higher purpose, commemorating Aretha Franklin’s legacy as an iconic symbol of black pride, and The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) extends sincerest condolences to the family of Senator John McCain. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr, President and CEO of the NNPA emphasized, “John McCain’s integrity and courage were his greatest virtues. Their sacrifice demands the fullest reverence on this day and every day. Aretha Franklin’s voice and talent sung a narrative which encouraged and promoted all to stand up and take action. Her legacy commands the NAACP to continue the work she started and supported. as a national statesman who grew and evolved particularly in his later years as an elected official who transcended partisan politics and who eventually did what he thought was the right thing to do rather than to be confined to political party loyalty. The President is in personal legal jeopardy and only a fraction of Kavanaugh’s record has been produced. What we do know of Judge Kavanaugh’s civil rights record is deeply troubling. His views on voting rights, affirmative action, equal employment, fair housing, and criminal justice could shut the courthouse door on justice for a generation. RETIREMENT OF JUSTICE ANTHONY KENNEDY On June 27, 2018, Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court. The NAACP issued a statement: “Justice Kennedy played a pivotal role on the Supreme Court for thirty years. He was the deciding vote in many close cases involving civil rights and civil liberties. The NAACP and its members are committed to protecting the gains won through the sacrifices of our ancestors and to protecting civil rights for generations to come.” Immediately thereafter, the NAACP joined several civil rights organizations in demanding that the vote to confirm Justice Kennedy’s successor be delayed until a new Senate is seated. “This is an extraordinary time in American history, which calls for extraordinary measures. The Senate is divided by a single vote. The need for a strong system of checks and balances has seldom been greater.

President Derrick Johnson’s remarks at the opening plenary session addressed the Kavanaugh nomination. At the Federal Legislative and Public Policy Workshop, VP for Advocacy Hilary Shelton discussed strategy and tactics for defeating the Kavanaugh nomination. President Derrick Johnson addressed the Kavanaugh confirmation fight during keynote remarks he delivered at the Southern Fair Courts convening in North Carolina on July 24. in grants to organizations working to expand internship opportunities for diverse youth populations, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). The grants build on previous Walmart funding to the two nonprofits, bringing the company’s total investment to more than $6 million over the last several years. The funding will help provide career pathways on Capitol Hill for students and young professionals through education and hands-on experience in the nation’s capital. “At Walmart, our commitment to diversity and inclusion spreads beyond our stores and out into the communities where our associates and customers live,” said Julie Gehrki, vice president of programs at Walmart. “Through relationships with organizations like CHCI and CBCF that reflect the diversity of American society, we can open the door to help more young people build a career in public service and expand the pipeline of talent on Capitol Hill and beyond by providing our future leaders with the tools needed for success.” At a time when people of color currently make up less than 20 percent of U.S. lawmakers (Pew Research Center), these grants come at a critical moment. Although diverse populations represent approximately 36 percent of the population, only 7.1 percent are

senior staffers in the Senate, according to the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. The CBCF will receive a threeyear, $1 million grant to help prepare college students and young professionals for careers in public policy and advocacy. The funding will provide exposure to the development and implementation of national policies – from Capitol Hill to federal field offices – as well as support intern housing, monthly stipends, professional development and leadership training. A three-year, $1 million grant to the CHCI will provide Latino undergraduates with paid summer or spring Congressional internships. Tropical weather in Florida is a way of life. The Sunshine State leads the nation in landfalling hurricanes with nearly 120. Properly preparing for hurricane season now can save you and your employees unwanted stress when a storm is imminent. The key is having a plan in place when that time comes. Here are some tips from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to help get you going as we head into the heart of storm season.

Plan ahead:

 Ensure your employees’ contact information is up to date.  Have a plan in place to communicate after the storm passes, e.g. set up a telephone number with a message featuring updates to inform employees of the status of company operations.  Establish a safe area away from exterior glass windows and doors if you plan to shelter at your business.  Identify what you need to secure your building, important equipment and who will help; outline specific tasks and conduct a training session.  Bookmark FPL.com/outage and save 1-800-4OUTAGE to your cell phone to report and check the status of your restoration.  Download FPL’s Mobile App in the App Store or Google Play, or text the word "App" to MyFPL (69375).

Generator safety:

 Read and follow all the manufacturer’s guidelines when using a generator to avoid dangerous shortcuts and ensure safe operation.  DO NOT directly connect your generator to your business’s breaker or fuse box. Power 10 | NewYorkTrendnyc

Have plenty of gas safely stored in gas containers to operate your generator.
