The Valuing Black Lives Summit is part of a multi-faceted set of strategies devised by CHN, which has been working since 2006 to build a global grassroots movement for emotional emancipation—to help Black people overcome, heal from, and overturn the lies of White superiority and Black inferiority. In 2011, CHN forged a collaboration with ABPsi to develop self-help support groups called Emotional Emancipation (EE) Circles, and together, CHN and ABPsi have trained over 250 local EE Circle leaders and planted seeds for EE Circle groups in 15 cities in the United States (including Ferguson, New York City, Baltimore, and New Orleans), as well as in the United Kingdom, Ghana, and Cuba.

FAMILY OF DECEASED ATTORNEY TAKE NEXT STEP TOWARDS JUSTICE have launched a new website, www.justice4abe.com, and issued a public appeal for help in solving the case.

The family of a young black attorney who was found dead by the roadside in Redding, Connecticut, is continuing its quest for justice. Relatives of Gugsa Abraham “Abe” Dabela, a Redding resident who died last year under suspicious circumstances,

Dabela died after his car rolled over onto its roof after 1 a.m. on April 5, 2014. He was found shot across the back of the head, just minutes after he was, from reports, cheerfully mingling with friends and passing out business cards for his new law practice.

Replete with documentation, the website details just a few of the reasons the family is challenging the Redding Police Department’s investigation and the Office of the Medical Examiner finding of suicide in October of 2014. Among the questions addressed on the website are: • Why did the Redding Police Department issue a press release within hours of Abe’s death classifying the gunshot as “self-inflicted”?

• Why wasn’t the death scene investigated by either the Major Crime Squad or an investigator from the Office of the Medical Examiner upon discovery of a gunshot victim?

• Why were Abe’s hands not tested for gunshot residue by the Medical Examiner despite the Redding Police Department’s reports stating that this test was requested on multiple occasions prior to the autopsy?

• Why did the Redding Police Department not conduct indepth interviews with potential witnesses or others who might have relevant information?

• Is there physical evidence inconsistent with a suicide finding?

The family has been steadfast in its pursuit of answers about Dabela’s death, working in conjunction with the authorities and also hiring its

WHO WAS GUGSA ABRAHAM “ABE” DABELA?

Gugsa Abraham “Abe” Dabela was a gregarious, outspoken private attorney in Redding, Connecticut.

Abe attended the University of Maryland at College Park on a full academic scholarship and graduated with a B.A. in neurobiology and physiology in 2001. He then graduated from Drexel University in Philadelphia in 2006 with a master’s in public health and in 2011 from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City with a law degree. He was admitted to the bar in CT in 2012. At the time of his death, he had passed the New York bar exam, and was preparing applications for admission to the Maryland and District of Columbia bars.

Known for his outgoing, friendly disposition and quick wit, Abe was born and raised in the D.C. suburbs, the middle child amidst four sisters. He was part of a closeknit family that consisted of his father, a practicing physician, and his mother, a homemaker. Prior to Abe’s death, all five children were physicians or lawyers.

He was a second amendment advocate who owned two firearms.

He also would provide pro bono legal advice to others on gun permitting and open carrying.

girlfriend and acquaintances in Redding, Abe had notably begun regularly carrying his gun on his person the last two months of his life. At this time, it is still not clear the reason for his increased vigilance about his safety.

One of Abe’s greatest loves was motorcycle riding, which attracted him to Redding. He spent a lot of his free time on long rides, enjoying the beautiful scenery and fresh air. He had the stated goal of visiting each State of the country on his motorcycle, and had collected images of his motorcycle at the entry point of various states on his Facebook page.

On the drive home from the latter, less than a mile from his home, the Redding Police have reported that he had a car accident, turning his SUV on its roof. At this time, it appears that Abe swerved suddenly as he was approaching a bend in the road but it remains unknown what caused Abe to make that sudden movement. Abe was unharmed in the rollover car accident and scene evidence suggests he was maneuvering his body to crawl out of the vehicle when, at some point after the accident, Abe was shot.

Abe was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:11 a.m. on April 5, 2014 of a gunshot wound to the back, right side of his head.

Whether Abe’s death was the result of a suicide or homicide remains disputed more than a year later.

Where is Redding, CT, and what kind of town is it?

Redding is a well-to-do town in Fairfield County, the southernmost county in Connecticut and among the most affluent counties in the United States in terms of personal income. IN MEMORIAM CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST HERO, JULIAN BOND TO BE BURIED AT SEA The family of Julian Bond has released a statement informing the public that the late civil rights activist and former NAACP chairman who died on Saturday, August 15th, will be buried at sea.

“We are honoring his wishes that his body be cremated and his ashes be committed to the Gulf of Mexico,” the family said in a statement Tuesday. “This will be a private, family only service. The final request will be carried out at sea on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time.”

The statement went on to express that the family understands that many

GUEST COMMENTARY ISLAND CULTURE IMPACTS THE WORLD POSITIVELY, BUT CHALLENGES MUST BE CONFRONTED

Many people can’t help but view the islands of the Caribbean, the Pacific and elsewhere as exotic destinations that afford momentary escape from the sometimes dreariness of day-today living.

He says that while the UN aims for a worldwide impact, the success of those goals may be even more critical to island nations.

But the island culture that gave the world a laid-back lifestyle and Bob Marley’s music isn’t always the utopia those travel-agent brochures and websites might lead you to believe.

“I understand why tropical islands are sometimes considered paradise,” says Carlisle Richardson, a United Nations economic-affairs officer and author of the book “Island Journeys: The Impact of the Island Way of Life at Home and Abroad” (www. islandjourneysbook.com).

“As a native islander, I feel and believe in this sentiment myself. But I also know that island living presents challenges that are much more complex than lying in the sand or enjoying a cool island breeze.”

Richardson, who grew up on St. Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean, is eager to see what the impact on islands might be in September when the United Nations is expected to adopt its post-2015 development agenda and sustainable development goals. Such issues as ending poverty and hunger; fostering sustainable economic growth; and combatting

• Economic realities. Because island economies are small and open, they are heavily affected by any fizzle in the international economy.

“Unfortunately, when economists speak globally, they don’t take into account the small populations of islands and the fact that a ‘minor glitch’ in world economic growth can be an economic calamity for 100,000 people or fewer living on an island,” Richardson says. “Competition between global powers over terms of trade is a catastrophe for island communities.”

• Climate change. Islands are surrounded by water, which puts them at the front lines of climate change. Islanders don’t have the luxury of viewing climate change as some philosophical debate, Richardson says. “We experience the rising sea level up close and personal, and when a disaster strikes, it strikes us very hard,” he says.

“Where once we were content, we suddenly feel the limits of our surroundings and we want more than what we have,” Richardson says. “It is at this point that the two extremes kick in. There are those who want to preserve the island existence and fear any disturbances that may upset the balance, and others who feel the walls closing in when the outside world seems so much more attractive than their island world.”

“I would never suggest that islands are more important than anywhere else or anything else,” Richardson says. “I understand that larger areas with bigger populations may generate more interest simply because of their size.”

• Loss of culture and heritage.

Islanders love to experience other cultures and to compare them to their own, Richardson says. They also want their culture and way of life to be appreciated. But with both those feelings comes a bit of wariness, he says. “We islanders are, sometimes, suspicious of outsiders out of fear of losing our lands, our culture or ourselves,” Richardson says. “We have, after all, experienced such losses time and time again.”

Richardson’s travels have taught him that islanders share commonalities.

“Yes, we have challenges, but we persevere,” he says. “We are resilient, because this is our home and we want nothing but the best for it.”

Author Carlisle Richardson grew up on the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean. He earned degrees in Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United Kingdom and worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of St. Kitts and Nevis.

He was assigned to the Permanent Mission of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations in 2001. In 2011, Carlisle joined the United Nations and worked in the Division for Sustainable Development, where he was a key figure in the work on small island developing states issues. He continues his mission today as an economic affairs officer for the United Nations in New York, where he considers himself a temporary resident and lives with his wife and daughter.

PROFILES HOLLIS, NY NATIVE KEEPING MIDDLE EAST SEAS FREE

“I love going to new places, learning about different cultures and trying different foods,” said Richards.

A 2000 Springfield Gardens High School graduate and Hollis, New York native is helping the U. S. Navy keep sea lanes safe and open in the Middle East, serving on the mine countermeasures ship USS Dextrous (MCM-13).

Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Richards is a Navy quartermaster and lives and works at a Navy base in Manama, Bahrain, where USS Dextrous is based. Bahrain is a small island country situated near the western shores of the Arabian Gulf.

A Navy quartermaster is responsible to keep the ship safe by navigation and letting the skipper know about any hazards to navigation.

“Being underway, waking up and getting the fresh ocean air and seeing beautiful sunrises and sunsets is one of the best things about being in the Navy,” said Richards.

“I like watching my shipmates doing their jobs whether it mine-sweeping, mine hunting or engineering evolutions,” said Richards.

The Dextrous is 224 feet long, 39 feet wide and displaces 1,312 tons of water. It is powered by four diesel engines and can reach speeds of more than 16 mph.

With approximately eight officers and 76 enlisted comprising the ship’s company, jobs are highly varied which keeps the ship mission ready — this includes everything from washing dishes and preparing meals to handling weaponry and maintaining the propulsion system.

As a member of the crew, Richards and other Dextrous Sailors know they are part of a forward-deployed naval forces team that is heavily relied upon to help protect and defend America on the world’s oceans.

The world is increasingly complex and crewmembers aboard the Dextrous, as well as the other forward-deployed naval vessels in Bahrain, assist with assuring international sea lines between the Middle East and Europe remain open and help protect against possible maritime threats.

As a Sailor with numerous responsibilities, deployed halfway around the world away from friends and family back home, Richards said he is learning about himself as a leader, Sailor and a person.

“I’ve learned responsibility, how to adapt to different situations and how to be a leader,” said Richards.

The Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF) announced today the upcoming launch of the second annual ‘Dine Out for Heroes,’ a dining event experience benefitting BWF. Following the success of last year’s one-day-only event, ‘Dine Out For Heroes’ will extend to five days for the worthy cause, running Monday, Nov. 9 through Friday, Nov. 13, across New York City. 10 TIPS FOR GETTING PREGNANT

For many women, getting pregnant can be a frustrating and anxiety-filled experience.

That’s just how I felt, which is why I wrote “The Impatient Woman’s Guide to Getting Pregnant” offering tips for TTC women to feel more in control of their fertility. Try the following 10 tips: 1. O bviously, it’s time to throw away your once beloved birth control! A good rule of thumb is to get off of the pill three months before trying to conceive if you have been on it for less than a year, and six months prior if you have been on it for over a year.

2. M ake friends with your ovulation cycle. Between a third and two-thirds of women under age 35 who are aware of their fertile time are able to conceive in their first month of trying.

5. Adjust your diet for optimal fertility. Incorporate fertilityboosting foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, soy foods, and olive oil. Avoid trans-fats and partially hydrogenated oil, found in frosting and some baked goods. These are so bad that the FDA just outlawed them! Food companies have 3 years to comply, so for now you have to police it yourself.

6. Many studies show that taking prenatal vitamins, such as folate and vitamin B6 increases your chances of getting pregnant quickly.

Omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil) have been linked to better embryos in IVF and smarter babies overall. There is also strong evidence that prenatal vitamins lower the chance of birth defects, so begin taking them immediately. 3. Find your fertile time by using a fertility monitor, ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), charting, or (my personal favorite) all three.

Sometimes this can be trickier than it sounds – for example, traditional “line” OPKs can be difficult to interpret. Consider a digital test with a clear “yes” or “no” like the First Response Digital Ovulation Test. Then you’ll know exactly when to get busy.

7. Contrary to popular belief, having sex every day doesn’t lower sperm count, So feel free to have as much sex as you please, and enjoy it.

9. S oak up the sun! Sunlight causes your skin to generate Vitamin D, which has been linked to fertility. Sit outside for 15-30 minutes without sunscreen a few times a week in the afternoon. This will also help you sleep.

10. W hen you think you may be pregnant — the earlier you know, the better.

ATTAINING FULFILLMENT IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION

• Charity: High-powered, highstatus attorneys are not as happy as public service attorneys, whose work include law reform organizations and legal services, as well as in government agencies at all levels. That includes educational and public international organizations, charities, private public interest law firms and private law firms performing pro bono work.

Money and status – these are the achievements for which lawyers are popularly known to aspire. Indeed, many do aspire and achieve those things, but they’re not guaranteed happiness; far from it, according to new research that includes data from 6,200 lawyers.

The research shows that lawyers who are paid the least – those working in public-service jobs – enjoy the highest levels of health and well-being. Meanwhile, partner-track jobs and high income have no correlation to happiness.

“Throughout the history of literature, we’ve been given many examples illustrating the folly of blind ambition,” says Arlene Krieger, a paralegal and literary humorist who authored the novels, “Privileged Attorneys: Las Vegas Style,” and “Freedom Twice Lost,” (www.arlenesbooks.com).

HOW TO MAKE MONEY WORK IN A MARRIAGE

Children, sex, in-laws, work stress – how couples handle these issues says plenty about a marriage and, often, a divorce. Not surprising to many, however, the No. 1 predictor of divorce is money, according to a study from Kansas State University.

More specifically, researchers say that arguing about money, especially early in a relationship, is the best predictor of divorce – despite a couple’s economic bracket.

“As with sex, for example, arguments about money are probably connected to deeper, underlying issues, such as trust, self-esteem, identity, etc.,” says Dr. Anne Brennan Malec, a clinical psychologist and marriage and family therapist with a background in accounting and business.

“Like most other areas of conflict, frequent communication and formulating a plan for how to address the financial situation allows many, if not most, issues to be adequately and respectfully resolved.”

• Avoid financial infidelity.

Every couple has to determine how their joint and individual expenses will be shared. Account for the necessities, from rent or mortgage to groceries and more. Account for all of your typical expenses, which may include date night and individual interests or hobbies. Respect individual interests – whether or not they are reasonable expenses, understand that they are important to your partner and may help the relationship. If one shops too much or spends too much on cars, find a way to

compromise. Having an agreedupon monthly budget helps minimize financial tension, and to spend more requires a good explanation.

• Be open to money issues beyond the marriage. Most adults have some degree of debt because of a college loan, child support, a medical history or a host of other reasons. Ideally, you will have discussed and come to terms with a spouse’s debt before marriage. Also, consider the potential upsides to having a prenuptial agreement, especially when one or both of you come to the marriage with significant assets or debts, or when children are involved.

• Have annual discussions about a spouse’s stay-at-home status.

There are many good reasons for a mother or a father to stay home and raise children, but you should revisit this decision once a year to determine if it still works for the family. The spouse who chooses to stay at home should make him or herself fully aware of the potential risk of doing so.
