DEADLINE LOOMS FOR REPORT ON RACIAL DISCRIMINATION The NAACP has submitted a petition, “An Appeal to the World” edited by W.E.B. Du Bois to the United Nations to address the denial of human rights to African Americans in the United States.

Our organizations commemorate the 70th anniversary of this historic document and affirm our commitment to the goals of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) and the significance of the upcoming U.N. review of United States’ record on ending racism and racial discrimination in the United States.

The ICERD is the principal human rights treaty designed to protect individuals and groups from discrimination based on race, color, descent, or national or ethnic origin, whether the discrimination is intentional or the result of seemingly neutral policies. After the last U.N. review in 2014, the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination which monitors compliance with ICERD, issued Concluding Observations expressing concerns over prevalent racial discrimination in the United States that Du Bois first voiced in 1947.

Among other observations, the Committee expressed concern over, but not limited to: 1) the practice of racial profiling of and police violence against racial and ethnic minorities, 2) lack of equal access to quality education and the ongoing segregation in schools, 3) the unfairly and disproportionately use of discipline in schools based on race, including more frequent referral to the criminal justice system of racial and ethnic minorities , and 4) the ongoing weakening of the Voting Rights Act and the obstacles to the vote such as restrictive voter ID laws, gerrymandering and felony disfranchisement laws.

We request that the American government pay heed to the racial injustices that Du Bois and his NAACP colleagues exposed seventy years ago.

Civil and human rights groups in the United States urge the Trump administration to submit a comprehensive report, which thoroughly reviews both U.S. progress and setbacks in implementing the ICERD and 2014 Concluding Observations on the federal, state and local levels. The CERD periodic review process is the world’s answer to W.E.B. DuBois’ Appeal and the U.S. still has a long way to go to address structural discrimination and the inequities DuBois detailed in his historic appeal.

The NAACP Georgia State Conference recently claimed a victory for voters in the State of Georgia. In the case GA NAACP, et al v. State of Georgia and Brian Kemp, the Court entered a Consent Order on Tuesday, October 17th, 2017, that the State will no longer be able to cut off voter registration beyond 30 days of any federal elections, including in federal

runoff elections. Also, the State must use a shorter registration deadline if a shorter deadline is provided under state law.

In April, the Georgia State Conference originally sued to correct a State Law that required persons to register three months prior to a federal runoff election in order to vote– in violation of the National Voter Registration

Act (NVRA).

“This Consent Order is the latest in a string of victories the NAACP has achieved in securing the rights of voters,” said NAACP interim President and CEO, Derrick Johnson. “We have succeeded in reversing what was obviously a blatant attempt to curb thousands of votes by disregarding national law.”

Georgia has a population that is roughly 30 percent African American, and with the recent Consent Order, the NAACP has ensured that black voters in Georgia are now afforded the rights guaranteed by the NVRA. “The NAACP is ecstatic over the court order granting full relief in the Voter registration runoff case,” said Phyllis Blake, the NAACP’s Georgia State Conference President. “We will continue to remind citizens of their rights to register and vote in runoff Elections. Kudos to the Lawyers Committee, our partner for their successful litigation.”

The Consent Order continues a winning streak for the NAACP in its fight for voting rights during the Trump administration. Since summer, the NAACP has filed similar lawsuits in Indiana, Texas, and Louisiana.

MEDIA COMPANY Raises $150 MILLION to Finance Film and TV Projects MACRO, the multi-platform media company founded in 2015 by former William Morris Endeavor (WME) partner Charles D. King, recently announced that it has raised an additional $150 million in equity and debt financing to produce and finance four to six film and television projects annually.

The equity includes financing from Emerson Collective, Ford Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and The Libra Foundation. MACRO’s existing investors, in addition to Emerson Collective, include Shanghai/ Hong Kong-based MNM Creative, MediaLink, Raymond J. McGuire of Citigroup, Anre D. Williams of American Express and other strategic investors from Wall Street, Silicon Valley and the corporate world. Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem, and Raymond J. McGuire, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, recently announced that the historic ground-breaking for the Museum’s new building, designed by Adjaye Associates in collaboration with Cooper Robertson, will take lace during the 50th anniversary year of 2018. The completion of design development and the success of the quiet phase of the fundraising effort now make it possible to envision a late fall 2018 start for construction of this new home for the Studio Museum, the premier center for contemporary artists of African descent, the principal visual art institution in Harlem, and a magnet for visitors from around the world.

With plans for the building having received a warm welcome from the community and enthusiasm and support from New York City officials, the Studio Museum today unveiled the design and made public a capital campaign led by the Board of Trustees, with a goal of $175 million to meet hard and soft construction costs, provide an operating and capital reserve, and build endowment. A range of education and community programs inaugurated as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary will ensure that the Studio Museum remains a vital presence in Harlem and throughout the art world during the construction period.

“BET HER FIGHTS: BREAST CANCER” marks the first signature event for BET’s

sister network, BET HER, which launched on September 28, 2017. BET HER is a multi-platform lifestyle brand designed to boldly celebrate the diverse and beautiful world of Black women. A 24-hour music and entertainment channel, BET HER has its finger on the pulse of an ever-changing beat and delivers compelling content that reflects, inspires and addresses the unique perspectives of Black women.

Formerly known as Centric, BET Her was rebranded to more closely align with BET’s flagship brand and connect with the

channel’s mission.

The taping in Atlanta was preceded by a health awareness fair for the show audience featuring representatives from local organizations including: I Will Survive Inc., Susan G. Komen of Greater Atlanta, The Center for Black Women’s Wellness, Dr. Speed’s Global Breast Health & Wellness Center and Planned

Parenthood - Cobb Center.

“BET HER FIGHTS: BREAST CANCER” show highlights include: KEYSHIA COLE honors breast cancer survivors and champions with three powerful performances, including a showstopping dance breakdown during the performance of her hit single “Incapable.” Fans will also be treated to Cole’s chart-topping songs “Heaven Sent” and “Love”. Actors RICHARD ROUNDTREE and VANESSA BELL CALLOWAY, both breast cancer

survivors, have a frank conversation about recognizing the signs of breast cancer and coping with its effects – highlighting the fact that breast cancer touches both women and men. SEVYN STREETER celebrates the occasion with her song “Before I Do,” and ALICE SMITH performs a haunting rendition of “Spell on You.” LA LA ANTHONY and BERSHAN SHAW share stories about how breast cancer has touched their lives. Legendary girl group XSCAPE closes out the show with a moving performance of their hit song, “Who Can I Run To,” with host Naturi Naughton joining at the end - drawing on her own girl group roots in 3LW!
