Auxiliary Deputy Inspector Celebrates Decades of Service and 88th Birthday The 113th Precinct serves the southeastern area of Jamaica, Queens, along with St. Albans, Hollis, Springfield Gardens, South Ozone Park, South Jamaica, Addisleigh Park, and Locust Manor. Assisting the police officer’s at the 113th Precinct is a diligent, dedicated, committed and community minded force of men and women known as the auxiliary police. According to the NYPD website, ‘The NYPD's auxiliary police program is the largest auxiliary police program in the United States, with thousands volunteer officers contributing more than one million hours of public service each year. Auxiliary officers are trained to observe and report conditions requiring the services of the regular police. Whenever possible, they assist in non-enforcement and nonhazardous duties. They are civic-minded men and women who volunteer to assist their local police precincts, housing police service areas, and transit districts by serving as the "eyes and ears" of the neighborhood through foot, vehicle, and bicycle patrols.’ At the 113th Precinct, the Auxilary Police Officers serve under the leadership of Auxilary Deputy Inspector, Robert L. Taylor, Sr. Deputy inspector Taylor has served at the 113th precinct since 1989. He started his duties as an auxiliary patrolman and rose steadily up the ranks. D.I. Taylor and his officers are under the supervision of Coordinator Police Officer

John Marcantonio who D.I. Taylor describes as a ‘great supporter and supervisor.’ Deputy Inspector Taylor has been a mentor of aspiring police officers as well as fostered a sense of duty and commitment amongst his officers. D.I. Taylor is a well-regarded and respected member of the force. This September, Deputy Inspector Taylor reached a milestone celebrating his 88th birthday and continues to serve in his role without a retirement date in site. Asked why he still remains committed to the auxiliary police, Deputy Inspector Taylor responded, “I feel a commitment to serve my community and my officers. We are a family.” Some of the duties of the auxiliary police officers include, patrolling housing developments, residential, and commercial areas, subway entrances and stations. In addition they maintain order at parades, festivals, street fairs, and other special events, patrol houses of worship,assist in crime prevention activities, perform traffic control at motor vehicle accidents and fire scenes and perform various other non-enforcement duties.

Training is also a requirement. As part of the auxiliary police training course, candidates are trained in self-defense tactics, CPR and first aid, patrol techniques, the New York State Penal Law, and much more. A written and physical exam is given at the end of training.

Majority of Drivers Admit to TEXTING While DRIVING DriversEd.com—the leading online

An inaugural initiative, the report examines drivers’ behind-thewheel behaviors, habits and decisions— providing insight into how Americans, while driving, engage in a number of activities, from texting to drinking to YouTube to Snapchat to marijuana and more.

Residents have reported receiving calls and text messages from a 607 area code offering to register the person to vote and requesting personal information over the phone. Voter registration is not conducted over the phone in New York and those contacted should not engage in phone calls or text messages offering these services. It is especially important not to provide personal information over the phone when you are solicited in this manner. "Elections are the foundation of our democracy, and scams like this not only compromise their security, but threaten the integrity of our elections altogether," Governor Cuomo said. "I urge New Yorkers to remain vigilant and to report suspicious election activity immediately so action may be taken to hold those involved accountable."

So as a therapist, I am asked this question by every new client, “When will I be better?” It’s a common question because we don’t want to feel pain, neither do we want to suffer or experience the torment of heartbreak. And for most of our physical pain, there is a medicinal remedy that helps the pain ease, lessen, or completely go away. If we have a headache, we can take Advil or Tylenol, for an upset stomach, Pepto Bismol, for a runny nose and cold symptoms and a cough Robitussin usually does the trick. If our symptoms lead to a diagnosis of anxiety, depression or other forms of mental distress, we can be treated with a medication. But, what is the treatment for a broken heart, betrayal by a lover, the pain of a breakup or worse the sudden and unexpected death of your spouse? I have thought long and hard on this topic because others around me will not let me stop thinking about it. It’s their questions, responses and criticisms that are expressed to me if I happen to look sad, feeling melancholy or if I cry. Some of the most popular remarks have included, “Are you still crying over that?” the “that” being the death of my husband of thirty years. “When are you going to get over it?” The “it” is referring to the betrayal by my husband. “How long has ‘this’ been?” The “this” being the situation I am in due to the circumstances surrounding my husband’s death.

Do you really want to know the responses I suppress in my subconscious to these cold-hearted, rude, intrusive, insensitive and sometimes condescending comments? My subconscious mind which would have me say, “Mind your f business,” “None of your business,” and “Why you all in my business?” This is why I hold my tongue during these encounters. Instead, I will conjure up some polite way to say, “Stay out my business,” like “I agree I should be over it,” or “I am working on it,” and the big bullshit response, “I know you are saying this to me out of love.” Still, I wonder why are those around me affected by my thoughts, behavior, and expressions of mourning, grief, anger, confusion, and despair at times over losing my spouse? Clinicians explain that they are experiencing vicarious trauma. Vicarious trauma is the stress that results from learning about another’s traumatic experience and helping or wanting to help another person who has been directly affected by such tragedy. This type of trauma shows itself with the same general range of symptoms as those who have been personally victimized by the event. So, if I accept the tenets of this theory, it would force me to re-evaluate my responses to the probing questions by others about my mental status. But I am not going to do that. E VENT S “Harry Potter: A History of Magic” O p en s Harry Potter: A History of Magic, the British Library’s most successful exhibition, opens at the NewYork Historical Society on Friday, October 5. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the U.S. publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the New York exhibition explores the traditions of folklore and magic at the heart of the Harry Potter stories and showcases a new selection of objects that are on view to the public for the very first time. Harry Potter: A History of Magic features centuries-old treasures, including rare books, manuscripts, and magical objects from the collections of the British Library, the New-York Historical Society, and other museums, as well as original material from publisher Scholastic and J.K. Rowling’s own archives. The exhibition is accompanied by a special audio tour featuring the voice of actress Natalie Dormer—available to ticketholders as a free Audible download—providing in-depth content on the objects on view. New-York Historical will present a wide variety of exhibition-related events for grown-up Harry Potter fans throughout the run of the exhibition, including trivia nights, art workshops, creative writing classes, social meet-ups, open mics, book clubs, and engaging courses that explore the Hogwarts curriculum. Programs include an onstage conversation with illustrators Mary GrandPré and Brian Selznick, and a special evening with actor Jim Dale, known for his narration of all seven Harry Potter U.S. audiobooks. Family activities feature History of Magic family days with handson activities and crafts, a Harry Potter family book club, historical Hallowe’en celebration, and trivia for families. John James Audubon’s watercolor of Snowy Owls, a 1693 publication defending the Salem witch trials, a study of the Woolworth Building—the landmark New York location featured in the film Fantastic Beasts—and other artifacts from New-York Historical’s collection round out the original offerings. Harry Potter: A History of Magic is organized around the subjects studied at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, including:  Potions and Alchemy, showcasing a bezoar stone that reputedly provided a powerful antidote to poison, the tombstone of Nicolas Flamel— the medieval Parisian rumored to be an alchemist who inspired a character in Rowling’s Harry Potter

passenger rights company, today revealed the results of a survey showing that more than 87 percent of U.S. travelers do not file claims following an issue with lost, damaged or delayed luggage at the airport. Under the Montreal Convention and U.S. national law, passengers may be entitled to claim between $1,525 and $3,500 in compensation from the airline at fault. One of the most comprehensive pieces of research on air passenger rights, AirHelp surveyed more than 2,000 people across the United States to understand how travelers are exercising their rights when travel plans go awry. AirHelp’s survey results show that the three main reasons passengers did not file a claim for compensation due to luggage issues included: they did not think they would be entitled to compensation (41%), they were not aware of their rights (31%), and they did not know how to file a claim (29%). These results prove that the implementation of the Montreal Convention and U.S. national law is not widespread enough, and travelers are leaving money owed in the hands of the airlines. “Airlines must do better to educate

air travelers on their rights. We found that 87 percent of U.S. travelers have not filed a claim, although they were entitled to compensation following issues with their luggage. Many U.S. travelers are unaware of their rights under the Montreal Convention, which was ratified by more than 120 countries. It protects passengers when their luggage is delayed, damaged or lost while in the care of the airlines,” comments Henrik Zillmer, CEO of AirHelp. “Our survey shows that travelers have a lot to learn when it comes to their rights, and that airlines and policymakers have much work to do, in order to better serve travelers. I created AirHelp more than five years ago to educate and support passengers, and we continue to work hard to help travelers get the compensation that is rightfully theirs.”

Luggage Claims

to successfully get the compensation that they are entitled to, a passenger must file a claim before leaving the airport. Travelers should fill out a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) claim for misplaced luggage, including the case number of their bags. The more detailed the claim, the better off that passenger will be, including an itemized list of the contents of their luggage, including the value of each item. If you have valuable luggage that is

worth more than 1,131 SDR (Special Drawing Rights), which is equivalent to approximately $1,580, you should notify the airline before checking your luggage. In these cases, you may be able to get higher compensation if your luggage is lost, but these terms vary based on the airline you are flying. Travelers carrying valuable luggage should check the policies of each airline, as well as the travel insurance policies for U.S. insurance companies to make sure they are prepared.

Whether a traveler is flying within the U.S. or to one of the other 120 countries that ratified the Montreal Convention, if that person experiences luggage issues while traveling, they may be entitled to compensation. Under air passenger rights laws, including U.S. national law and the Montreal Convention, the maximum compensation from an airline for checked luggage that is either lost or damaged is $1,525 – $3,500. donating $1 million to help improve mental health services in Chicago. The Chicago native announced the news during his second annual summit for his nonprofit SocialWorks on Thursday, which he streamed live via Twitter. To start, six different mental wellness providers will receive $100,000 grants in Cook County, Illinois. Chance called the new initiative My State of Mind, which will serve as a mental health resource for Chicagoans. Indeed, mental illness has been effectively criminalized in Illinois. Currently, the largest mental health hospital in Illinois is not even a hospital — it’s Cook County Jail.

It’s My Grieving…Don’t Tell Me When To Stop! (cont'd from p. 4) being nosy and don’t care to realize or accept the fact that there is a grieving process. And going through this process, which has no expiration date, is the medication. I believe they also watch us who grieve and they are forced to face the devastatingly scary question of “Could this be me someday?” Unfortunately, the answer to that question is ‘Yes.’ One day you will walk in my shoes. We are all mortal creatures with an end date and each one of us will lose several loved ones and friends in their lifetime. How you handle your grief might be very different from how I have handled the mine. From my experience, I can confirm that grieving is a roller coaster ride and there are stages of grief. First, the shock of what you cannot fully comprehend invades your brain. It’s as if you are watching yourself in a movie in very slow motion. Even the voices of sorrow and expressions of regret, are unintelligible. The words sound garbled like unintelligible sounds. I can recall this stage clearly. It hit me minutes

after I was informed that my husband’s heart was “flat,” and “we are calling the morgue.”

And with that declaration, I scream and cry into the pillow because my denial has come to an abrupt end.

There is the stage of denial. You are telling yourself that this did not happen. It was all a bad dream. I am going to sleep and when I wake up, life will be upright again. But you are awakened by the sun in your face and look over to see the bed is empty. Next, someone walks into your bedroom with bloodshot eyes from crying and asks, “Are you ok?” I recall responding, “Why would I not be ok?” And then there was that look of fear on the face of your child that says they are in pain, scared and has been crying, but now they look scared for you — their mom. In a hesitant voice, your child reminds you of what yesterday brought. “Ma, don’t you remember?” “Remember what? I ask.” “Mom, you’re scaring me.” Again, I asked why? And in a loud shriek, my child calls out for help.

The denial stage can last longer or shorter in time. For me, I was not allowed the luxury to linger in that period.

An adult family member runs in and hears from my child that she is scared, something is wrong with me. “Mom doesn’t remember Dad died yesterday.”

Then there is the stage that I call “devastating grief mixed with numbness.” I felt like I was just going through the motions or like I was being led and pushed as if I was blind and had a guide dog leading me through the world. For me this stage lasted the longest. Every day I awoke I felt as if I was in a hole and climbing was my daily job. But the climbing never got me out of the hole. This stage took me through a whirlwind of emotions that vacillated between depression and despair and hope and hopelessness. So how did I get to a stage where I can function and sometimes not feel numb… through the grieving process is still ongoing?

In experiencing the stages, I don’t remember pulling myself out of each one. It is very weird, at least for me, that one day I woke up and I started feeling better. I can equate it to how a toddler learns to walk. No one teaches a baby to walk, one day they are crawling everywhere. Then one day they stand, but plop back down on their butt, numerous times. Each time they stand they feel more sure of themselves. And then the day comes when that baby stands and takes one step all alone. That was me. I crawled, then I pulled myself up, holding onto something or someone and then the day came where I could walk without help. But I do still hurt and have serious regrets that sometimes present as resentment. I have unanswered questions of “Why me?” I don’t understand the master plan. I talk to God on the daily, on the hour, on the minute, some days every second. I am looking for that answer to the question, ‘When will my grieving end?” For now, that is a question that does not have an answer.
