FIRING MUELLER Will Bring the FURY

Trump has promised that if North Korea were to respond to America’s sanctions with bombing and other actions of war, that the U.S will respond with “Fire and Fury.” But Pres. Trump may bare witness to a conflagration of his own making that could damn his own presidency, due to a fury from his own allies, let alone his political enemies. The press, as of late, has been speculating that Trump will fire Special Investigator Robert Mueller as Trump’s Stormy Daniels controversy creates an untenable political heat surrounding his administration, only exacerbating his problems with the Mueller investigation. Mueller, has now asked for documents from Trump regarding his business dealings abroad and other items of a personal persuasion, something Trump said would not be necessary months ago as he claimed he was not personally under investigation.

For rival Democrats, any perceived move to fire Mueller would be politically gold for the once again upstart party trying to find its message and gear up for wins this fall in the midterm congressional elections. With wins in Pennsylvania, Alabama and other red states with in the past year, Democrats are savoring this precipice that Trump is on. If Trump stays the course, then there may be information found that could damn his presidency as he bites the bullet rather than risks the backlash of firing Mueller, if he fires Mueller, then he could put himself in the worst political disposition any president has ever experience.

It could be worse than Nixon and worse than Clinton during their scandals respectively. Trump could be cannibalized.

Why? Because Democrats would find allies in the Republican party.

It is important to remember that Trump is still seen by the Republican establishment, which is most of the veterans of the party in office, as a usurper. He defeated Republican favorites and insiders/

treacherous, and insincere. His enemies, even if they have been acting as sycophants for Trump’s first year or so in office for fear of accruing vitriol form Trump’s staunch and politically active supporters, must be waiting in the wings ready to pounce. They want things to go back

He won because he became a popular sound bite, the media could not turn away and his own party seemed to both want to ride his coattails and condemn his movement as dangerous,

Known for its “powerfully engaging” (New York Arts) and “contemporary and fresh” (Theatre Is Easy) choreography, Ariel Rivka Dance (ARD) collaborates with the acclaimed Amy Marshall Dance Company and choreographer/dancer Chanel DaSilva for a season of provocative dance dedicated to empowering female expression.

An audience favorite for its accessible, graceful signature style of movement, the all-female ARD celebrates its 11th season under the helm of choreographer Ariel Grossman. Program includes two world premieres

by Grossman, one by DaSilva, and beloved repertory by both Grossman and Marshall.

ARD presents two new works: a solo work that reflects on the sacrifices one makes for passion, and She, a dance that delves into the emotional waves of motherhood. As a mother of two, Grossman shares her NewYorkTrendnyc

Nine HBCUs were awarded a total of $360,000 grants to make sustainable campus improvements across their campuses. To date, the program has awarded more than $2.1 million dollars in grants to HBCUs. The nine winning schools were selected by a combination of cumulative online voting scores and grant proposals that were submitted by the schools and judged by a panel of distinguished judges, including Howard University alumnus, and film and television star Laz Alonso, Dr. Ivory Toldson, President and CEO, QEM (Quality Education for Minorities) Network; Gregory Moore, Esq.,Commissioner, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC); Michael Tabb, Managing Partner, Red Rock Global and Melissa Brown, Senior Manager, Marketing, The Home Depot.

NE WS NYC First Lady Has Announced $9.5 million investment To Address LGBTQ YOUTH HOMELESSNESS

The ads—which are currently running on the City’s subways, buses, and digital platforms—feature 17 different young LGBTQ New Yorkers proudly expressing who they are and encouraging all LGBTQ youth to learn more about the array of City programs and supports accessible through nyc. gov/unityproject.

The administration has previously enhanced services to address LGBTQ homelessness, including opening a 24hour drop-in center in Queens specifically targeting LGBTQ youth, and the first-ever City-funded transitional independent living homes with specialized services for

transgender youth.

While New York City’s LGBTQ youth fare significantly better than their peers nationally, too many vulnerable young people lack services that meet their specific needs. Evidence demonstrates that NYC’s LGBTQ youth are far more likely than their peers to experience an array of social, physical, and mental health disparities—from dating violence to bullying to homelessness to attempted suicide.

NYC Unity Project is the City’s first coordinated, multi-agency effort to address the unique challenges and needs of LGBTQ youth. To strengthen and better coordinate services across the City and ensure no young person falls through the cracks, the NYC Unity Project works collectively across 16 city agencies to better reach LGBTQ youth where they live, where they learn, and in their communities.

“As the Trump administration continues to callously roll back our community’s hard-fought wins at the federal level, the NYC Unity Project's work has become more critical than ever,” said NYC Unity Project Director Ashe McGovern.

“Through this bold investment in cuttingedge programs to address the epidemics of LGBTQ youth homelessness, family rejection, and health inequity—we are stating unequivocally that, as a city, we are committed to advancing justice for LGBTQ communities, particularly for our most vulnerable LGBTQ young people.”

NYC Unity Project includes participation from the Administration for Children’s Services, NYC Children’s Cabinet, Commission on Gender Equity, Commission on Human Rights, Department of Education, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Department of Homeless Services, Department of Youth and Community Development, Human Resources Administration, Mayor’s Center for Faith and Community Partnerships, Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit, Mayor’s Office of Operations, Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence, New York Police Department, and NYC Health + Hospitals.

The City continues to lead the nation in protecting LGBTQ rights:  In April 2018, the de Blasio

administration announced it would become the largest city in the country to house incarcerated people according to their gender identity, and not their sex assigned at birth.  In June 2017, the de Blasio administration published New York City's first-ever LGBTQ Health Care Bill of Rights.  In June 2016, New York City became the first municipality to launch a citywide campaign specifically affirming the right of transgender individuals to use the bathroom consistent with their gender identity or expression.  In March 2016, Mayor de Blasio issued an executive order requiring City agencies to ensure that employees and members of the public are given equal access to City single-sex facilities without being required to show identification, medical documentation or any other form of proof or verification of gender.  In December 2015, the NYC Commission on Human Rights issued legal enforcement guidance defining specific gender identity protections under the City Human Rights Law, including equal bathroom access, as well as access to housing, employment, public accommodations, and other protections.

“Homelessness is a critical issue for LGBTQ youth who not only face high rates of homelessness but also see discrimination and stigma when they seek services. I applaud the city for tackling this issue in such a targeted way and look forward to working with them on these new programs,” said Congressman Jerry Nadler.

“As we work to make this city more fair for everyone, it’s clear that additional investments are needed in the health and well-being of a vulnerable, often marginalized population, our LGBTQ youth,” said Council Member Debi Rose, Chair of the Committee on Youth Services. “Today, thanks to the longstanding advocacy of First Lady Chirlane McCray and Speaker Corey Johnson, we are making a significant investment that will pay dividends by preventing homelessness and by addressing mental health issues early on. The New York African Film Festival Is Underway For 28 years, Mahen Bonetti, the founder and Executive Director of African Film Festival, Inc. (AFF), has been celebrating African cinema in New York City. The non-profit arts organization was founded in 1990 and showcases works of African filmmakers and develops ways to share the vision and culture of African film with American and international audiences.

This year the New York African Film Festival started May 16 and will run through June 10.

Born in Sierra Leone, Bonetti lives in Manhattan with her husband and their daughter. She recently told The New York Trend more about this year’s festival.

New York Trend: What are some of the highlights for this year’s festival?

Mahen Bonetti: This year’s festival celebrates a milestone for the AFF: 25 years of bringing innovative and cutting-edge cinema from Africa and its diaspora to the premier cinema houses of New York. The program will highlight the pioneers of classical African cinema in dialogue with the new generation of filmmakers—women, youth, and a crop of avant-garde and experimental artists.

It is an exciting program that reflects an amalgamation of all the major themes from our archive: modern days, ancient nights. The festival also pays homage to Nelson Mandela in this year of his centennial. The 2018 festival will also present a digital art exhibition, a panel discussion on art and activism and live performances.

New York Trend: Why do you feel the festival has had such longevity?

Mahen Bonetti: Because each generation of filmmakers on the continent and in the diaspora puts its own spin on the African story. When the festival started 25 years ago, there

was a lack of faith in the viability of African-centered cultural programming, especially on the scale of a festival. We were told no one would be interested.

But the response showed a hunger for art of the caliber and vision that we offered through the festival. The AFF is also a home for both established and new filmmakers who find a platform here that offers them opportunities to develop a sophisticated audience and exposure to cultural and academic institutions that buy their work. We are also invested in bridging the space between the audience and the artists through post-screening conversations in which the artists are front and center yet engaged with an intelligent and curious audience. It is a whole package of quality, innovation, audience development and textured contextualization of the films through programming that includes panel discussions, art exhibitions and live performances.

New York Trend: Can you explain your tagline: “More than just a festival?”

Mahen Bonetti: This has been the identity of AFF from the beginning. The organization started 28 years ago with a series of community programs and a biannual festival. Then we realized that it was important to provide a biennial context for African film and began to curate art exhibitions, master classes and panel discussions in tandem with the festival. But the organization is not limited to the film festival itself. In its present incarnation, AFF offers yearround arts and culture programming on a global scale and in collaboration with world-class institutions, from MOMA to the Guggenheim to the Brooklyn Academy of Music. We also serve as a resource for filmmakers and a range of institutions and professionals — from

the court system that may call us about translation services to doctors who are looking for information about a medical issue addressed in the films we screen.

New York Trend: Do you feel Hollywood has really embraced diversity–or is it just a phase?

Mahen Bonetti: If we put this issue in its global context, Bollywood and Nollywood, respectively have a bigger market than Hollywood. So, we are celebrating the homegrown film industries that are poised to grow even bigger. Nigeria and South Africa have created a star system and audiences in Africa go to the cinema to see local

films. To speak truth to power, the issue of Hollywood’s diversity doesn’t inform the work we do. Instead, we are focused on and responding to the future: 60% of the African population is under 40.

We are embracing the diversity in film from Africa and its diaspora. We want to extend that conversation even further.

There is so much exchange going on between the younger diaspora artists who are collaborating and producing work in music, film, and other arts. They are the bright lights on the continent, the next incarnation of modern African art. This is the future where exciting things are going to happen.
