SENATOR KAMALA HARRIS CHALLENGES

GRADUATES TO FORGE A WAY FORWARD

United States Senator Kamala Harris delivered the commencement address Saturday morning at Howard University, urging students to go to the front lines to fight for the nation’s deepest values of justice and equality. “History has proven that each generation of Howard graduates will forge the way forward for our country and our world, and now graduates it is your turn,” Harris said.

“You are graduating in a very different time than you arrived a few short years ago.”

The Howard University alumna applauded the members of the class of 2017 for their social activism as college students, including their contribution to the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and participation in the roiling protests of social injustice throughout the country. “You students have joined the fight for justice — you protested,” Harris said. “From the streets of Ferguson to the halls of the United States Congress, you have lived the words of James Baldwin, ‘There is never a time in the future in which we will work out our salvation. The challenge is in the moment, the time is always now.’”

Harris is both the first African-American and first woman to serve as Attorney General for the state of California.

She is the second African-American woman in history to be elected to the United States Senate. The University has marked the 150th anniversary of its founding throughout the academic year. Howard University President Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick has said the establishment of the University constituted one of the most noteworthy

accomplishments in the history of American colleges and universities.

“It is evident that the success of Howard University is the result of a labor of love and a deeply-rooted desire to pursue a very radical idea, ‘education for all,” Dr. Frederick said at the ceremony. “As we grapple with the uncertainties of this nation, Howard University will fervently provide solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.”

Howard University conferred 2,173 degrees, including 318 master’s degrees, and 105 Ph.Ds. More than 375 students received professional degrees in law, medicine, pharmacy and dentistry. Howard University has the only dental and pharmacy colleges in the District of Columbia. The 2017 graduates represented 47 states and 39 countries; 157 graduates were from the District of Columbia.

This year’s commencement celebration featured an all-women list of honorary degree recipients. Anna Pauline “Pauli” Murray was posthumously recognized with an honorary Doctor of Laws.

Murray, a 1944 Howard University School of Law graduate, was a quiet force behind some of the most iconic civil rights and social justice events of the 20th century. She was one of the founding members of the National Organization for Women. Murray was also the first African-American woman ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1977.

Maureen Bunyan received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Bunyan is an award-winning journalist and news anchor who is a founder and board member of the International Women’s Media Foundation, and a

founder of the National Association of Black Journalists. In her remarks, Bunion said opportunities for Blacks in the mainstream media were born out of the urban rebellions of the 1960s. She urged students to hold the media accountable and to promote the interests of African Americans, immigrants, and other marginalized people.

Howard University also celebrated one of its own renowned scholars. Dr. Eleanor W. Traylor received an honorary Doctor of Letters. Dr. Traylor is a Howard University graduate professor of English and an acclaimed scholar and critic in African-American literature and criticism.

Dr. Traylor said Howard inspired her vocational commitment “to prepare the next generation for its work – seriously, relentlessly, and even ruthlessly.” She said the institution had “mapped a way out of no way on the road to excellence” in its 150-year history. “The real beauty of this day is equaled only to that day when the idea of our University was born.”

Students pursue studies in more than 120 areas leading to undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. NSA and HOMELAND SECURITY Designate FAMU National Center of Academic Excellence The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security have designated Florida A&M University (FAMU) as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education through 2022. The designation was awarded in March after the University met rigorous requirements and successfully demonstrated its ability to serve the country’s need to defend cyberspace by preparing a skilled workforce via its academic offerings.

“Your ability to meet the increasing demands of the program criteria will

serve the nation well in contributing to the protection of the National Information Infrastructure,” wrote Karen Leuschner, the national CAE program manager at NSA, in a letter acknowledging the University’s capacity to address the critical shortage of professionals with cyberdefense and other industry-related skills.

According to Leuschner, FAMU will receive its designation certificate in June at the National Cyber Security Summit in Huntsville, Alabama and joins a list of designees such as Purdue University,

Johns Hopkins University, Princeton University and Dartmouth College.

“The designation places FAMU in the company of leading universities and attests to the foundation we have built to deliver quality cybersecurity education and experiences to students within our program and across the University,” said project lead Deidre W. Evans, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, a component of the FAMU College of Science and Technology.

Evans underscored the unique role HBCUs like FAMU can play in defending America’s most vital national assets.

“The challenges and opportunities to defend the personal, governmental, military and informational infrastructure are undeniable,” Evans said. “The realization that cyberdefense is a human or social issue elevated the need to understand it not only from a technical perspective but also from the viewpoint of diverse human attitudes and behaviors. HBCUs like FAMU are in a position to offer unique perspectives to threats and viable solutions for

cybersecurity in many domains.”

Looking to expand upon ongoing efforts, Interim Provost Wright recently announced that the College of Science and Technology is exploring the development of academic programs in cyber security. “We are proud of the work of our faculty, staff, and students, which has led to the University being named a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education.

This designation will continue to position the University as a national leader in cybersecurity,” said Wright. “We hope to build on this momentum and provide even more training and experiential learning opportunities for our students.”

In addition to its National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education designation, FAMU is also home to a Center for Cyber Security, Center for International Law and Justice, and Center for Global Security and International Affairs. FAMU is also a founding member of the Florida IT Career Alliance, which was established to help recruit, retain and employ Florida’s next generation technology workforce.

For the past 36 years, the Harlem Business Alliance (HBA) has honored black brilliance with their annual awards gala. This annual must attend celebration is the pinnacle fundraising event for the nonprofit. This year’s theme, ‘Black Women Did That’ shone the spotlight on excellence – honoring nine outstanding women, a first for the organization, which traditionally honors both women and men.

Saluting the magic, brains, grace and determination of black women, the organization will acknowledge them in the following categories: business, communications, government, community service and newly added science technology engineering, art and math (STEAM).

The Harlem Business Alliance has pledged its service as an advocate for the preservation and retention of Harlem’s business community for over 36 years. Programs include, but are not limited to: Harlem’s first co-working space; first adult stem program; 10,000 entrepreneurs served through programs and services; 2,000 entrepreneurs received one-on-one counseling and over 1,200 workshops. With HBA’s guidance, their clients’ small businesses bloomed from concept to tangible product, street vendor to store owner and food enthusiast to food artisan.

Disrupt Harlem Code Squad was launched in Fall 2015, the first hyper focused program to connect young adults with entrepreneurship options via technology. Lastly, the HBA acknowledges when you educate a woman, you educate a generation; this inspired the groundbreaking Lillian Project, a tailored entrepreneur incubator for native born African American women.

Remembering History During

NATIONAL MINORITY HEALTH MONTH

by Sarah Rheinhardt worked to establish a dozen free community health clinics nationwide and a free breakfast program that grew to serve 20,000 children in 19 cities around the country.

In April of 1915, Booker T. Washington proposed “National Negro Health Week,” recognizing that “without health and long life, all else fails.” His idea gradually evolved into observing the month of April as National Minority Health Month to raise awareness and eventually help eliminate the health disparities facing racial and ethnic minorities.

National Minority Health Month offers a platform to call attention to the deep injustices experienced by people of color and an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of black public health champions who have worked to protect and advance the health of marginalized communities.

If we trace history, it’s clear that the medical profession didn’t think the Hippocratic Oath Primum non nocere, or “first, do no harm,” applied to citizens of color. The glaring truth is that science does not operate in isolation from systems of deeply rooted racism and oppression that plague scientific, political, and cultural institutions in the United States—particularly when it comes to health. Such systems have been used to justify unfathomably cruel and inhumane medical experimentation performed on enslaved black people, which were only replaced in the Jim Crow era by pervasive medical mistreatment that resulted in untold fatalities. Racist medical practices were tolerated, if not explicitly condoned, by professional organizations such as the American Medical Association through the late 1960s. The government-funded Tuskegee Syphilis Study, which

effectively denied syphilis treatment to nearly 400 black men over the course of 40 years, ended in 1972, but a formal apology was not issued for this deliberate violation of human rights until 1997. And still, in doctors’ offices and hospital rooms across the United States today, race remains a significant predictor of the quality of healthcare a person will receive.

But perhaps just as troubling as the underpinnings of racism in science and medicine is the relative obscurity of racism in the historical narratives propagated by dominant white culture. That modern medicine was built on the backs of marginalized populations is well understood and indeed has been lived by many, but it is far from being accepted as universal truth. Meanwhile, the contributions of black scientists, doctors, and health advocates have routinely been eclipsed by those of their white colleagues or are absent entirely from historical records.

These advocates range from highprofile figures like Dr. Regina Benjamin, the 18th U.S. Surgeon General who shifted the national focus on health from a treatmentbased to a prevention-based perspective, to grassroots activists like Detroit’s Malik Yakini, who in 2006 founded the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network to ensure that Detroit communities could exercise sovereignty and self-determination in producing and consuming affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food.

They include Byllye Avery, who in 1974 established the Gainesville

Women’s Health Center to expand critical access to abortions and other health care services to black women, and Dr. Camara Jones, former president of the American Public Health Association, who skillfully brought the impact of racism on health and well-being to the forefront of the public health agenda. It is imperative that we not only highlight the health disparities experienced by communities of color that have resulted from interlocking structures of oppression, but also recognize the leaders who have stood on the frontlines demanding change. This must not happen only during National Minority Health Month, but continuously.

The work of these leaders both underscores a powerful legacy of social and political advocacy among marginalized communities and serves as a powerful reminder of how far America has to go.

The Religion Communicators Council announced 26 Wilbur Award winners March 7. The awards honor excellence by individuals in secular media—print and online journalism, book publishing, broadcasting, and motion pictures— in communicating religious issues, values and themes during 2016.

BOOM SHOCK FITNESS Gets Brides Fit For Wedding Day Every year in the United States, more than 2 million couples get married, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. For some, it’s a special rite of passage and a chance to improve certain areas in life, including one’s health.

That was the case for Cordnesha Mosby. For her, signing up for a customized Boom Shock Fitness workout plan was a chance to embark on a long-term commitment to wellness – beyond her special day. Founded in 2010 by Stephanie Jones, a certified personal trainer and group fitness coach, Boom Shock specializes in empowering women to meet their fitness or wellness goals.

“I told Stephanie that although I have a wedding coming up, I did not want a quick fix. I didn’t have a magic number that I wanted to [achieve],” says Mosby, whose nuptials are scheduled in September. “What I did tell her was

that I wanted to have a trainer to help me jumpstart my journey in becoming a healthier me.”

Brides with limited time, but ready to achieve results, can get a customized Boom Shock workout routine and food plan that helps them meet wellness or dress-size goals. Stephanie, who roller skates for fun, seeks to empower her clients, who are often well equipped for the challenge but need guidance. “I don’t allow my clients to use me as a crutch. You going to Red Lobster, you don’t have to call me. You already know what NOT to eat,” says the University Maryland graduate and certified massage therapist. “It’s about growth within yourself, learning your body and what works for you.”

Stephanie also assists women struggling with high blood pressure, diabetes, bad knees or back pain.

These are women determined to defy a doctor’s odds against their

ability to be healthy. “I also target that person who does not know what the heck to do,” says the 38-year-old, full-time entrepreneur, “too much going on, no balance; don’t know what to eat; and don’t know what to do to work out. I get excited when my clients come to me like this, and then notice improvement. ” When asked how she came up with the name Boom Shock Fitness for her company, Stephanie laughs and shares, “I went through a phase where whenever I got excited, I would say, ‘boomshockalocka!’ I did this for about a year.” She adds, “Then, I was having lunch with one of my girlfriends and said, ‘boomshockalocka!” She said, “That’s it!” Stephanie says her initial reaction was – no. However, eventually she landed on Boom Shock Fitness.

FITNESS and NUTRITION EDUCATION Conference Held As part of the yearlong 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Jessie Trice Community Health Center (JTCHC) will host a Fitness and Nutrition Education Conference.

BLACK INDIES FILM SERIES Set for June 2 - 4 in NY

The film industry is a strategic industry all over the world. Films convey strong messages at many different levels as explained by August Wilson’s statement “all art is political.” Therefore, the film industry is very much under control of some sort of official system of classification and code. The notion of mainstream films is very much rooted in that notion of what is good “for everybody,” official and generally supported by a specific value system. There was a time in the US film industry when a white woman and a black man were not supposed to kiss on screen, a documentary could not be about a non-white protagonist, and a documentary featuring re-enactments was deemed unfaithful to the genre.

The diversity of norms and regulations that make a film a mainstream product are many in the world. When it comes to making films that address issues related to religion, sexual orientation, controversial political views and more, independent filmmakers face many obstacles. Independent filmmakers do not always seek financial rewards for their work, It’s not always about the money. Often time, independent filmmakers’ primary goal is to convey messages and impact change.

The films in the ADIFF’s series “Black Indies” are independent films due to the simple fact that they did not enjoy the support of the official structures in place to support filmmakers. Technological advances have contributed to the development of a rich production of independent films with different levels of expertise.

The “Black Indies” series is a modest attempt to showcase independent black films from different countries and angles that, despite being quite interesting, enjoyed a limited commercial career due to a system that is still determined by the structures in place.

The series features films like Almodou by Amadou Thior from Senegal, about an abusive Imam; New York’s Dirty Laundry by Patrice Johnson that depicts the drama of the immigrant after the September 11 events; Spirits of Rebellion by Zeinabu Irene Davis about the work of a group of filmmakers of color decided to change the narrative of the representation of people of color in films; Desirée by Felix De Rooy based on a true story on how religious belief can drive a person crazy, and other films that go against

many of the taboos and limitations found in specific societies.

So these are the filmmakers who see films as art, not as a commodity.

Therefore, the notion of commercial is not at the center of their work.

These auteurs have enriched cinema in many ways even though some of those auteurs have been/are neglected.

“BAG LADY” to Launch National Tour To kick off the national tour of the multi-award winning, one-woman play Tammi Mac’s “Bag Lady”, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) will sponsor the sold-out Los Angeles kick-OFF at the Los Angeles Southwest College. The play will be performed at the Little Theatre on campus. “Bag Lady” is a personal journey of local KJLH radio personality Tammi Mac, who wrote a one-woman play about her life and has performed the play over the past 3 years, to sold-out audiences, in Los Angeles. The play has won numerous NAACP Image Awards and is a ninetime winner at LAWEBFEST, the influential web series festival.

“Bag Lady” deals with multiple issues including childhood sexual abuse, substance abuse, intimate partner violence and black male/ female relationships. At the conclusion of the play, there is an open dialogue between health professional experts, Tammi Mac and a woman living with HIV/AIDS. This dialogue focuses on healing and redemption and encouraging women who have experienced negative life experiences to go on with their lives.

This weekend’s performances are the official launch of the AHF-sponsored national tour of the play, with dates to open in Cleveland, OH on Friday, May 19th; the historic Karamu House Theatre in Houston, TX in September; and a culminating performance in

Atlanta, GA during a national public health conference on the impact of various sexual health issues on women of color.

10th Annual HAITIAN AMERICAN MONUMENT FESTIVAL On Columbus Day weekend, October 6 through 8, 2017, the Haitian American Historical Society will be hosting the 10th Annual Haitian American Monument Festival to commemorate the Siege of Savannah. Sean “Diddy” Combs and Naomi Campbell brought his new documentary from Live Nation Productions, Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A Bad Boy Story, to London for a special screening at the Curzon in Mayfair.

HIP HOP PIONEERS ACQUIRE USE OF TRADEMARK FOR THE MOVEMENT Activist/author and former politician Hon. Ronald “Bee-Stinger” Savage and hip hop pioneer David Parker, aka Chief Rocker Busy Bee, have acquired the trademark for the Hip Hop Movement. With the acquisition of the trademark, the two pioneers in the field of hip hop music industry plan to create and organize events and projects under the name of the Hip Hop Movement which will seek to involve millennial and like-minded individuals who wish to have a productive and positive voice in the areas of politics and entertainment.

“The Hip Hop Movement is a term that has been used throughout the past several decades but it has never been used in an official capacity.

Through our efforts, the term and its language will have new meaning,” states Parker, known in hip hop history as the first solo MC to rap on a mic. Parker, under the moniker Busy

Bee, went on to have a successful career in such films as Wild Style and Paid In Full, among other projects.

His partner Ronald Savage has a unique hip hop pedigree dating back to 1979 when he began his career carrying Bronx, NY DJ Jazzy Jay’s crates of records. He later worked records for the label Strong City and served as a creative force behind the duo Snap!. Known to the industry as Bee-Stinger, Savage recalls being inspired by Public Enemy’s fierce mantra, “Fight The Power,” which sparked his interest in activism and leadership. “I decided to look at my life and I said, ‘I want to fight for my community’ and at the time I felt that hip hop had changed into a movement. I sat down and carved the term Six Elements of the Hip Hop Movement.

“The Official Six Elements Of The Hip Hop Movement are as follows:

Consciousness Awareness, Civil Rights Awareness, Activism Awareness, Justice, Political Awareness and Community Awareness. This is how and what made me get into politics and in 2008, I was elected to the NY State Democratic Committee.

This experience fueled my interest in moving forward with a movement. I felt the need to make hip hop more than just hip hop, it’s cool to know hip hop but at the same time you have to know government to fight the power.”

In early 2017 Parker and Savage joined forces, deciding to put a more positive spin on hip hop by connecting R&B, the Civil Rights Movement, and hip hop culture into one brand: The Hip Hop Movement.

Ironically, Savage, a former member of the Zulu Nation, the first family of hip hop, has accused its former founder, Afrika Bambaataa, as his abuser.
