MEMBER OF LITTLE ROCK NINE CHOSEN AS COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Dr. Terrence Roberts, civil rights pioneer and member of the Little Rock Nine, will be the keynote speaker for the Fall 2017 graduating class of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). The free, public event will be held Friday, December 15 at 10:00 a.m. in the Kenneth L. Johnson, Sr. HPER complex.

Dr. Roberts was one of the Little Rock Nine, a group of AfricanAmerican students who, in 1957, were the first black students ever to attend classes at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.

In 1999, he and the other members of the Little Rock Nine were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President Bill Clinton.

On September 4, 1957, Roberts and eight other African American students (known as the Little Rock Nine) made an unsuccessful attempt to enter Little Rock Central

High School. Despite the presence of the National Guard, an angry mob of about 400 surrounded the school.

The National Guard was removed with the protection of the students left to the local police. On September 23, 1957, a mob of about 1000 people surrounded the school as the students attempted to enter.

The following day, President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent U.S. Army troops to accompany the students to school for protection. The troops were stationed at the school for the entirety of the school year, although they were unable to prevent incidents of violence inside.

As a result of the subsequent closing of Little Rock’s high schools during the 1958-1959 school year, Roberts completed his senior year in Los Angeles, California. Roberts continued his education at California State University, Los Angeles and

graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology in 1967. He received his Master’s degree in social welfare from the UCLA School of Social Welfare in 1970, and his Ph.D. in psychology from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, in 1976. From 1975 to 1977 he was a member of the faculty at Pacific Union College, a private liberal arts college in Napa Valley, California.

From 1977 to 1985 Roberts was Director of Mental Health at St. Helena Hospital and Health Center. From 1985 to 1993 he was assistant dean in the UCLA School of Social Welfare. Roberts joined the Antioch University Los Angeles in 1993 and served as core faculty and co-chair of the Master of Arts in Psychology program until 2008. He is currently principal of the management-consulting firm, Terrence Roberts Consulting.

Prior to being elected mayor, Cantrell served as president of the Broadmoor Improvement Association, where she led efforts that expedited the neighborhood's recovery after

NE WS NAOMI CAMPBELL, MARC JACOBS & UNAIDS Collaborate For World AIDS Day

The celebrated fashion designer Marc Jacobs has designed a limited edition T-shirt to raise funds for UNAIDS’ activities in support of people around the world living with or affected by HIV. The T-shirt will retail for US$ 55 and is on sale at marcjacobs.com.

The T-shirt chimes with the theme of this World AIDS Day campaign, #myrighttohealth. Everyone, regardless of who they are or where they live, has a right to health.

Actress, model and activist Naomi Campbell came up with the initial idea for the collaboration.

“It felt only right to collaborate with

Marc Jacobs,” said Ms Campbell.

“Given his understanding of the global HIV epidemic and the many friends we have lost to the disease, there’s no one I’d rather work with to continue bringing awareness to UNAIDS.”

UNAIDS is excited to work with Ms. Campbell and Mr. Jacobs, who are both long-standing advocates for an AIDS response that leaves no one behind. The collaboration has been coordinated by the CAA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which represents Ms Campbell.

“Naomi Campbell’s long history of

commitment to humanitarianism is both remarkably commendable and genuine,” said Mr. Jacobs. “I was honoured to be asked by her to collaborate on this T-shirt in support of UNAIDS as a continued effort to raise awareness for this globally important cause.”

Ms. Campbell and Mr. Jacobs particularly want to raise awareness about the vulnerability of young people to HIV. There were an estimated 610,000 new HIV infections among young people aged 15 to 24 years in 2016, with young women accounting for 59% of new infections among that age group. In eastern and southern Africa, young women aged 15 to 24 years make up two thirds of new HIV infections among that age group. “Young women face many challenges as they transition into adulthood and the rules are often stacked against them,” said UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé. “This special T-shirt will help UNAIDS continue our work to level the playing field and advance young women to make independent and life-changing decisions and assert their right to health.”

Gender inequalities, including gender-based violence, exacerbate the vulnerability of women and

girls to HIV and block their access to HIV services. Young people are often denied the information and freedom they need to make free and informed decisions about their sexual health, with most lacking the knowledge required to protect themselves from HIV. Research also shows the importance of keeping girls in school for as long as possible, since young women who have no formal education are twice as likely to become infected with HIV as young women who have had some schooling.

HIV STILL VITAL ISSUE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE OF COLOR The U.S. Epidemic



More than three and a half decades have passed since the first case was diagnosed of what is now known as AIDS. An estimated 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV, more than at any time in the history of the epidemic. Due to a combination of social inequities, and where the disease took hold, a disproportionate share of those affected are Black and Latino and/or gay men. In 2015, Black Americans accounted for almost half (45%) of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S., while comprising just 12 percent of the

population. Latinos are also heavily affected, accounting for 24 percent persons newly diagnosed with HIV in 2015 and representing 17 percent of the population.

The survey was designed and analyzed by researchers at the Kaiser Family Foundation. It was conducted between January 25 -February 16, 2017 among a nationally-representative sample of 1,794 people ages 18-30 years of age. Interviews were administered online and by telephone in English using an instrument developed by staff at the Kaiser Family

Foundation. NORC at the University of Chicago conducted sampling, interviewing, and tabulation for the survey using the GenForward panel, a representative panel of adults ages 18-30 living in the United States. Panel members who do not have internet access complete surveys via telephone, and internet users complete surveys via the web (for the current survey, 1,647 participated via the web and 147 via telephone). The margin of sampling error including the design effect for the full sample is plus or minus 3 percentage points; for Black and Latino young adults it is

ANNUAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR Planned

The City of Miami Gardens encourages academic excellence from all of its students – hoping that they will broaden their scope for occupations (beginning at the elementary level) in the world of science and engineering. To assist with successfully implementing this process, the City of Miami Gardens will host its Annual Science and Engineering Fair for students with an interest in science. The event, the brain trust of Councilman David Williams Jr., Seat 5, has become one of the beacon projects in the community. Sponsorship opportunities are currently available for those interested in supporting the initiative.

The event itself is set for Monday, December 11, 2017 with the Science and Engineering Fair Competition, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Florida International University Biscayne Bay Campus, located in the Wolfe University Center Ballrooms, 3000 NE 151st Street in North Miami, Florida. The Fair concludes on Tuesday, December 12, 2017, with the Science Fair Awards Presentation Ceremony to be held from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

FORMER NFL PLAYER Helps Young Athletes

“We must have good relationships on and off the field!”- Those words of wisdom were shared by former NFL player DaJuan Morgan, to the students of Hialeah Senior High School during the most recent Student ACES (Academic Community Education) leadership training in Miami-Dade County.

Morgan, a South Florida native and former professional football player with the Kansas City Chiefs, spoke to members of the school’s football program, as part of the Student ACES program. In this recent session, dozens of young student-athletes on the Thoroughbreds football team participated in one-on-one conversations with a former pro.

The Student ACES program is sponsored by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), and focuses on training junior- and senior-year high school students from public and private educational institutions the values and principles of leadership, such as honor, humility and integrity, through interaction with important sport figures, entrepreneurs and community leaders.

In this session, held in the school’s sports complex, Morgan talked to the student-athletes about his life, his early childhood after his father passed away and how he has had to overcome obstacles in his professional career.

The students also had the opportunity to carry out several fun team exercises after their conversation with Morgan, where they engaged in leadership development skills and self-confidence activities − tools they can apply in their academic life, with their families and in the community.

“As a former college athlete, I have experienced and witnessed tremendous leadership challenges. In addition, with over 30 years of professional work experience, my commitment is to bring leadership principles to these students, to provide basic building blocks to help them succeed and optimize their leadership potential,” said Buck Martinez, founder of Student ACES. The participants also received the book Building Blocks of Leadership for Young Adults, written by Buck Martinez, as a resource to help them

better grasp and apply valuable lessons that will serve as a foundation for the rest of their lives.

Student ACES is a 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to providing leadership programs, mentoring, scholarships and internship opportunities for high school students. Its focus is to inspire, train and mentor a community of Student ACES who exemplify leadership traits

in athletics, community service and education. Its mission is to develop tomorrow’s leaders by providing best-inclass leadership curriculum, mentoring and projects that make a difference in their communities. Student ACES is headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Schools participating in the Student ACES program include those from Palm Beach, Broward and MiamiDade counties.
