‘Black Agenda Cincinnati’ Calls Out CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

The Black Agenda Cincinnati (BAC) has publicly denounced the city’s flagship media outlet, the Cincinnati Enquirer for its negative and bias news coverage of the black community. BAC is a group of individuals and organizations working to improve the lives of Black Cincinnatians.

Under the leadership of Dwight Tillery, former Cincinnati Mayor and president of BAC and the Center for Closing the Health Gap, publicly states its disappointment and demands to ensure that future reporting of articles are balanced and fair with malicious intent.

“This paper has destroyed the reputation of people and their organizations with the utmost dishonesty and a racial venom that will continue to go unchecked unless our community stands up

and demands change,” said Tillery.

After numerous meetings with Cincinnati’s editorial board, the group has stated that there has been no improvement in reporting.

BAC is asking that the editor, Michael Kilian resign immediately.

“This ongoing institutional racism and biased reporting from our city’s flagship media outlet must stop,” said Bishop Bobby Hilton, pastor of Cincinnati’s World of Deliverance Ministries and one of the country’s leading civil rights advocates. “Story after story, year after year, the Enquirer promotes racial division, vilifies our black leaders and misrepresents our collective story. It’s wrong, and the time has come for us to speak up once again and demand change.”

LaToya Cantrell is the mayorelect of New Orleans, LA. On September 18, 2017, Cantrell was elected the first female mayor in the city's 300 year history. Claiming 60 percent of the vote, she is also the first outsider elected to the office since 1961.

Prior to being elected mayor, Cantrell served as president of the Broadmoor Improvement Association, where she led efforts that expedited the neighborhood's recovery after

Hurricane Katrina. The group developed a blueprint for the neighborhood and secured $5 million in pledges from the Clinton Global Initiative.

GOV. CUOMO UNVEILS PROPOSAL TO ELIMINATE TIP CREDIT IN NYS

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has unveiled the fifth proposal of the 2018 State of the State: direct the Commissioner of Labor to schedule public hearings to examine industries and evaluate the possibility of ending minimum wage tip credits in New York State. In certain workplaces, such as car washes and restaurants, where wages and tips are both generally low, workers' income can rely entirely upon tips. These tips, meant as a reward for good service, instead serve as a critical wage subsidy that brings workers' wages just up to the legally mandated minimum wage. The Governor made the announcement on the CATS Roundtable with John Catsimatidis.

"At the end of day, this is a question of basic fairness. In New York, we believe in a fair day's pay for a fair day's work and that all workers deserve to be treated with dignity and respect," Governor Cuomo said.

"There should be no exception to that fairness and decency. I have directed the Department of Labor to ensure that no workers are more susceptible to exploitation because they rely on tips to survive. I look forward to reviewing the findings of these hearings."

More than 70 percent of all tipped workers in New York are women.

Further, studies have shown that African-American workers are often tipped less than their white counterparts. Tipped workers often report not being willing to come forward because they are reliant on their employers for shift scheduling, with certain shifts generally tipping more than others.

In addition, tipping practices have been linked to higher rates of sexual harassment. Workers in states that require the full minimum wage be paid to tipped employees experience half the rate of sexual harassment compared to workers in states that pay lower wages to tipped employees, according to a 2014 study by the Restaurant Opportunities Center.

The study's chief recommendation was to eliminate the sub-minimum wage for tipped workers to reduce the pressures that increase sexual harassment to create a safer and more equitable workplace.

The New York State Department of Labor will hold public hearings to solicit input from workers, businesses and others. Those who wish to testify will be able to pre-register on the Department's website. The Department will issue a notice identifying the specific times and locations for the hearings.

Since the tip credit system was allowed under the miscellaneous industries wage order, the consolidation had the unintended consequence of establishing a tip credit in various industries where the tip credit had previously been prohibited.

In practice, many employers find it difficult to keep track of employee tips properly, especially in industries where tips are not a steady and reliable source of income that can be depended upon by workers to meet their living expenses, and where daily and weekly fluctuations make it difficult for workers to know whether they are being underpaid.

Complicated tip credit record-keeping can make it difficult for employers to know whether they are meeting their obligations, and can be a vehicle for wage theft when employers fail to pay workers properly.

In 2008, the Department of Labor found that nearly eight out of every 10 car washes in New York City and one out of two across the state violate minimum wage and overtime laws, with some paying just $3 an hour. Investigators visited 84 car washes throughout the state and uncovered $6.5 million in underpayments to 1,380 workers.

Since Governor Cuomo took office, the state has recovered and returned more than $170 million to workers, the highest total in the nation.

ENTER TAINMENT ‘AFROPoP’ CELEBRATEs

Actor Nicholas L. Ashe, star of the acclaimed television show Queen Sugar (OWN), will host the 10th season of the ground-breaking public television series _AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange.

AfroPoP X_ brings to U.S. audiences a collection of documentary films focusing on issues including the arts, immigration, heritage, social justice and more—all examined through the lens of the African Diaspora. The series premieres on WORLD Channel at 8 p.m. ET (10 p.m. PT) on Monday, January 15—Martin Luther King Jr. Day. New episodes will air weekly through February 12. The show is produced by Black Public Media (formerly known as National Black Programming Consortium). Copresented by distributor American Public Television (APT), AfroPoP will be released by APT to public television stations across the U.S. in February 2018.

Best known to television fans for his role as Micah on Queen Sugar, the award-winning series from Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay, Ashe has been acting since his stage debut at 10 as the young Simba in the national tour of The Lion King.

He has also garnered film and television roles including 2016’s Custody with Viola Davis and Are We There Yet?

“As we celebrate 10 years of AfroPoP, Season 10’s films remind us not enough has changed for people of African descent globally.

Immigration is still a challenge, inequitable treatment of women of color is still an issue, and inequitable distribution of resources is just as pervasive--even when the need is great and resources are available,” said BPM Director of Programs and Acquisitions and AfroPoP Executive Producer Kay Shaw.

“BPM is committed to continuing to bring to the American public these stories and others that celebrate the art, culture and creativity people of African descent for another 10 years.”

In 2007, with a plethora of films about the Black experience in need of distribution, BPM decided to create a series to show the full breadth of Black life. AfroPoP premiered on public television in 2008 with celebrity host Idris Elba and remains the nation’s only public television documentary series on contemporary life, art and culture across the African Diaspora. It has since aired 47 feature documentaries and several

nonfiction and fiction shorts, providing a platform for filmmakers of color to tell their diverse stories.

Anika Noni Rose, Wyatt Cenac, Gabourey Sidibe, Anthony Mackie, Yaya DaCosta, Jussie Smollett and Nikki Beharie, along with Ashe, have each served as AfroPoP hosts.

This season of the nation’s only public television documentary series on contemporary life, art and culture across the African Diaspora includes: Black Panther Woman, Rachel Perkins’ moving documentary on Marlene Cummins, a member of the Australian Black Panther Party and her personal story of activism, art and addiction, including her coming forward with her own #MeToo moment from the movement (January 15); a shorts program consisting of Marco Williams’ Lonnie Holley: The Truth of the Dirt, Michael Fequiere’s Kojo and Jessica Beshir’s He Who Dances on Wood (January 22); Between 2 Shores, Mariette Monpierre’s gripping documentary about two Dominican women fighting to bring their children with them to their new lives in Guadeloupe, highlights a struggle faced by many immigrants today: family reunification (January 29); Ten Days in Africa, Regi Allen’s humorous and insightful look at his trip to West Africa to explore the differences and similarities between Africans and African-Americans, a special encore broadcast from the first year of AfroPoP (February 5); and Fatal Assistance, awardwinning filmmaker Raoul Peck’s scathing indictment of global aid policies that failed Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake’s aftermath. Peck was a recent Oscar nominee for I Am Not Your Negro, which was funded in part by BPM.

Earlier he played Viola Davis’s son in the courtroom drama Custody, which premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.

Ashe made his acting debut at age 10 in the role of Young Simba in the national tour of The Lion King.

Onstage, he is perhaps best known for his Lincoln Center debut opposite Marin Ireland in Abe Koogler’s world-premiere production of Kill Floor, receiving glowing reviews from the New York Times for his pivotal role. Ashe also played the role of Junior in Manhattan Theatre Club’s critically acclaimed production of Choir Boy (directed by Trip Cullman), reprising the role at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta and the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.

Ashe is also a talented vocalist, pianist and composer. Under the tutelage of renowned playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, he has developed original stories and music of his own. In 2015, he created a scholarship for young artists in his hometown of Freeport, Long Island.

Ashe collaborated with Cierra Glaude on a short film titled Last Looks, which had its world premiere at the 2017 Urbanworld Film Festival.

ANNUAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR Planned

The City of Miami Gardens encourages academic excellence from all of its students – hoping that they will broaden their scope for occupations (beginning at the elementary level) in the world of science and engineering. To assist with successfully implementing this process, the City of Miami Gardens will host its Annual Science and Engineering Fair for students with an interest in science. The event, the brain trust of Councilman David Williams Jr., Seat 5, has become one of the beacon projects in the community. The event itself is set for Monday, December 11, 2017 with the Science and Engineering Fair Competition, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Florida International University Biscayne Bay Campus, located in the Wolfe University Center Ballrooms, 3000 NE 151st Street in North Miami, Florida. The Fair concludes on Tuesday, December 12, 2017, with the Science Fair Awards Presentation Ceremony to be held from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Students from 22 schools throughout Miami Gardens are preparing now for their winning projects. Participants from the innovative Beginnings in Science (iBiS) Programs include: Golden Glades Elementary School, Crestview Elementary School, Scott Lake Elementary School, Rainbow Park Elementary School, Parkview Elementary School, Carol City Elementary School, Hibiscus Elementary School, Barbara Hawkins Elementary School, and Carol City High School. Over 100 students from these schools are expected to participate for cash prizes ranging from $25 – $750 for the most unique project. Judges from various fields will critique student projects and the top five students will be recognized with cash

prizes.
