Bahamas Tourism and Aviation Hosts INVESTMENT SUMMIT

The Minister, who was presented with an Apex award for Distinguished Service at the closing banquet of the summit, provided his remarks at the Summits Annual Scholarship Award’s luncheon, sponsored by the Marriott, at the Marriott’s Biscayne Bay Hotel, Miami, Florida. He shared that in the last 12 months, The Bahamas have engaged in an overhaul of procedures and protocols to create an environment

where the ease of doing business in The Bahamas is historically at its optimum best.

The National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators and Developers (NABHOOD), hosts the Summit annually with the Black Meetings and Tourism Magazine and Horizons International Group. This year’s theme is “New Opportunities with Great Partners.”

Now in its 22nd year, the annual summit is designed to educate attendees on becoming a hotel owner or investor, share minority investment trends, explore supplier opportunities, learn how to market to minorities and discuss diversity issues affecting the industry. The summit features a number of executive level professionals from the world’s leading hotel brands who share a wealth of information needed to succeed in the industry.

CRIME VICTIM ASSISTANCE PROGRAM E x pa n s i o n A n n o u n c e d

First Lady Chirlane McCray and New York Police Department announced that the police department will provide more crime victims with the support and resources needed to recover from the trauma of experiencing a crime.

The NYPD is expanding the Crime Victims Assistance Program (CVAP) to all of the city’s 77 precincts and nine Police Service Areas (PSA), making it the first police department in the country to make such a service available to crime victims citywide.

CVAP is a free and confidential program that pairs crime victims with trained advocates who help mitigate post-event trauma by discussing their safety concerns, legal rights, and ways to navigate the criminal justice system in a meaningful way. NYPD coordinates with Safe Horizon, the largest non-profit services agency in the United States, to provide crime victims with a number of resources, including crisis intervention, access to counseling and support groups, emergency housing or relocation assistance, and information on other local services that can help them with crime-related needs.

“The pain and emotional vulnerability of being a victim of crime can linger long after the violence or violation has happened.

“This trailblazing program is the product of seamless collaboration with our partners at Safe Horizon, and New Yorkers’ willingness and ability to share responsibility for public safety,” said NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill. “It is an invaluable resource for every New York City neighborhood as police officers and victim advocates work together to keep residents safe, and ensure that they feel safe, too.”

“CVAP allows us as a city to reach people in great need at a very vulnerable time—immediately following a crime,” said Deputy Commissioner for Collaborative Policing Susan Herman. “We are so pleased that victim advocates are now in every precinct and PSA in the city, making it more convenient than ever before to help victims of

crime rebuild their lives.”

Ensuring CVAP is available citywide supports a central goal of ThriveNYC, the roadmap championed by First Lady of New York City Chirlane McCray that aims to help New Yorkers better navigate the city’s mental health services. A major public awareness campaign will roll out this fall to ensure the public is familiar with the services CVAP provides.

“In New York City no crime victim has to rebuild their life or navigate the system alone,” said ThriveNYC Executive Director Alexis Confer. “I applaud First Lady McCray for her leadership in bringing this program to all precincts and PSA’s. I also want to thank the crime victim’s advocates for the important work they do every day to support survivors of crime in our city.”

Since its launch in 2016, CVAP has helped thousands of New Yorkers feel safe and assisted in the aftermath of a crime. The program’s positive impact is clear: from the start of the program in July 2016 through July 31, 2018, CVAP advocates across the city have reviewed more than 500,000 police reports to help proactively identify victims who may be in need of their services. During that same time period, CVAP has interacted with approximately 70,000 individuals to make sure they are aware of

their rights and options after being victimized by a crime, advocating for nearly 11,000 New Yorkers to help them navigate various services such as housing, mental health, public benefits, and the criminal justice system.

“The Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) makes key connections between victims and critical supports,” said Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence Cecile Noel. “For victims of intimate partner violence in particular, these supports are vital to addressing safety concerns, navigating the criminal justice process, and connecting to other support services and resources.

We applaud this important and successful partnership between law enforcement and social services.”

CVAP is part of the Department’s broader commitment to drive down crime and strengthen ties to local communities through innovative neighborhood policing. That same commitment made July 2018 the safest on record in New York City and places the department on track to finish 2018 under a total of 100,000 index crimes, which would be only the second time the NYPD has reached this milestone in the CompStat-era.

The legislation seeks to improve the understanding of health care system utilization patterns of people with sickle cell disease (SCD) and establish cost-effective practices to improve and extend the lives of these patients.

On July 25, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee unanimously approved S. 2465, the Sickle Cell Disease Research, Surveillance, Prevention and Treatment Act of 2018. Next, it will be reviewed by the full Senate.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder characterized by the production of an altered form of hemoglobin which polymerizes and becomes fibrous, causing red blood cells to become rigid and change form so they appear sickle shaped instead of soft and rounded. Patients with sickle cell disease suffer from debilitating episodes of sickle cell crises, which occur when the rigid, adhesive and inflexible red blood cells occlude blood vessels. Sickle cell crises cause excruciating pain as a result of insufficient oxygen being delivered to tissue, referred to as tissue ischemia, and inflammation.

These events may lead to a variety of other adverse outcomes such as acute chest syndrome that requires hospitalization. Sickle cell disease is an orphan disease, affecting approximately 100,000 patients in the U.S. and millions worldwide, with significant unmet medical needs.

“As a physician who has treated SCD patients for more than twenty years, I know first-hand the impact of this disease,” said Yutaka Niihara, MD, MPH, CEO and founder of Emmaus Life Sciences. “This condition exacts a terrible toll on patients, their families and the community in terms of pain, missing school or work and hospitalizations. We are pleased to see this legislation and look forward to it being passed.”

for Working Moms On BACK-TO-SCHOOL HUSTLE

- By Holly Caplan From the moment my daughter got out of school in May to the end of July, was a complete blur. It was a blur of summer camp, work, travel, deadlines, proposals and pool parties. The fact that she was going back to school in three weeks had not occurred to me. When it did, I panicked. Where did the time go? I frantically realized I had no idea what day school started and had to ask another mom. I got a brisk answer of “August 20th,” which I like to call the “working mom fail” response. The guilt of not knowing when my child starts 2nd grade and feeling completely overwhelmed set in. Where do I begin? I’ve got to sign her up for fall activities, get a new backpack, lunchbox, some new clothes and also manage my job, meetings, travel and various work expectations. As working moms I think we feel there is no easy way to do all of this and keep a clear head and stay on task, but I have found five great tips for surviving back to school as a working mom:

1 Order Online:

them do the grocery shopping for you. Do it a day or two before school starts. The kids can make their requests so they get to put some creativity into their lunchbox choices. Other positives are that it isn’t expensive to shop online and it saves money because you avoid over-buying in a store.

2 Let the Laundry Lie:

Where does your laundry lie? Mine sits on a bed in the guest room.

Clean, yet unfolded. But clean. The point here is, let your laundry lie. It is okay to let some things slip during back -to -school time. You will have so much on your plate as it is, don’t let the mundane domestic stuff get to you. Not having every thing completed or accomplished around the house is okay. You will not get a ticket or a fine for letting some things in the household fall behind. Give yourself permission to know that it is okay if you don’t get everything done. It is completely normal, and you will eventually catch up.

3 Get Your Routine Back:

In the summer our routines are typically off. As I mentioned, it can feel like a complete blur when so much is going on.

Activities, camp and work will run you, instead of you running them. No shock there. Bringing structure and school back into your life can be a struggle, but welcome it because it brings the return of normalcy. Give yourself a cushion returning to the routine by practicing earlier bedtimes and waking times week before school starts. This will get us parents and kids back on schedule. Also, create a family calendar with upcoming school activities and your work schedule to make sure that all planets are aligned,

Spare yourself the hustle of shopping.

No need to throw everyone in the car in 100-degree heat to head to your favorite retail super store, fend off the kiddos requests for toys and candy while backto-school shopping. It is not worth it.

Modern technology allows us the ability to order online for backpacks, clothing and supplies. Think of the time and energy you will save by sitting on your couch and checking some boxes and swiping “check out”. This also applies to grocery shopping too, which is becoming more and more common. 4 Be Guilt Free:

I think the hardest thing about being a working mom during back-to-school is missing school events. The hallmarks of the beginning of the school year like Fall Festival or Meet the Teacher are big events for the kids. Missing them can make you feel disconnected from their little lives and the guilt can take over.

This is also difficult because you miss the chance to meet other parents and classmates at these events. You start to feel like a constant outsider because you are the mom who isn’t around enough.

Don’t beat yourself up or hold yourself to an impossible standard. Know that you are doing everything that you can to accommodate both school and work and that you are still present in your kids lives, even when you can’t physically be with them.

5 Connect with other working moms: I have a lot of wonderful friends who are stay-at-home moms. They tend to keep me grounded and I rely on them a lot for my sanity. Working mom friends

can be super supportive too because they are most likely experiencing the same emotions and situations. For overall complaining, coping and time management ideas your working mom friends will happily listen and help you.

In addition, their schedules will most likely parallel yours, so for all of those 2:30 play dates you have missed, you can now do play dates on schedules that accommodate the work day. The silver lining here is that you get to solidify strong relationships with other women who will stand by you when you need support.

Managing back-to-school time will never be perfect or fool proof, but working outside of the home can bring on some added stress. It is balancing act that can cause disruption as you get adjusted to the new school year and schedules.

Know that you are not alone, and we are all muddling through it together.

BUSINE S S WALMART Supports Future Leaders With $2 Million in Funding Walmart has announced $2 million

in grants to organizations working to expand internship opportunities for diverse youth populations, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). The grants build on previous Walmart funding to the two nonprofits, bringing the company’s total investment to more than $6 million over the last several years.

The funding will help provide career pathways on Capitol Hill for students and young professionals through education and hands-on experience in the nation’s capital.

“At Walmart, our commitment to diversity and inclusion spreads beyond our stores and out into the communities where our associates and customers live,” said Julie Gehrki, vice president of programs at Walmart. “Through relationships with organizations like CHCI and CBCF that reflect the diversity of American society, we can open the door to help more young people build a career in public service and expand the pipeline of talent on Capitol Hill and beyond by providing our future leaders with the tools needed for success.”

At a time when people of color currently make up less than 20 percent of U.S. lawmakers (Pew Research Center), these grants come at a critical moment. Although diverse populations represent approximately 36 percent of the population, only 7.1 percent are

senior staffers in the Senate, according to the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

The CBCF will receive a threeyear, $1 million grant to help prepare college students and young professionals for careers in public policy and advocacy. The funding will provide exposure to the development and implementation of national policies – from Capitol Hill to federal field offices – as well as support intern housing, monthly stipends, professional development and leadership training.

A three-year, $1 million grant to the CHCI will provide Latino undergraduates with paid summer or spring Congressional internships.

Properly preparing for hurricane season now can save you and your employees unwanted stress when a storm is imminent. The key is having a plan in place when that time comes. Here are some tips from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to help get you going as we head into the heart of storm season.

Plan ahead:

The evening features Grammy Award winner Arturo O'Farrill, recognized as one of the greatest names in Latin jazz today and founder of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, as guest host.

A hundred years ago, the Brooklyn Music School had outgrown its location on Grand Avenue at the converted "Tub of Blood Saloon," which had been home to a notorious New York gang in the 19th century before becoming a community music school in 1909. The school's founders had the vision to move into a new location on St. Felix Street, next to the Brooklyn Academy of Music Opera House in the heart of Ft. Greene.

Over the following century, the school has grown from serving 250 students to 8,000 students at our historic home on St. Felix and across New York City.

The Brooklyn Music School plans to increase accessibility to outstanding music and performing arts education and create a safe and welcoming environment for students, including:  Urgent structural repairs and improvements to our historical brownstone facility at 126 St.

Key Programs of Brooklyn Music School  BMS Outreach brings music and performing arts to public schools and senior centers across NYC. BMS Music Mentors offers full scholarships for dedicated students from lower income families, with a 100% college matriculation rate for participants since inception. BMS provides financial aid to nearly 40% of our private lesson students.

BMS "Arts Reaching Youth" After-School provides affordable music and arts programming to Brooklyn families.

BMS Vocal Arts provides preprofessional opera training to emerging artists and staging fully produced operas, musicals and cabaret performances.
